How much further till I walk to the moon?
How many cold nights do I need to spend?
How many times do I need to say goodbye?
My eyes will be completely dried up
It will continue even after a thousand years
That’s how I thought
But it completely filled this void
What is this feeling?
It’s simple
A «Good morning» everyday
See the blue ocean like a movie in the summer
Learning where you are from
We layers the moments, like a film
We reshoot over and over
Rather than fading or adding colors, the scenery where you are is more vibrant
It’s ok if it was an instinct or sudden
I just thought like that, without any hesitations
I was asked if I can be trusted
That’s a simple question
I’ve been thinking about it, whenever
That voice follows me around
And pushing me forward
I see, this feeling is love
I hope the two fingers we reached over a fire of a thousand years ago
Are still shining after a thousand years later over there
«I don’t mind believing», I think I heard that
I looked up at the round moon
It was always shining down the world
I see, this feeling is love
How much further till I walk to the moon?
How many cold nights do I need to spend?
How many times do I need to say goodbye?
My eyes will be completely dried up
It will continue even after a thousand years
That’s how I thought
But it completely filled this void
What is this feeling?
A new wind will bring Spring
Ah, where the wind blows is where I should return to
It won’t change
How hot the summer is, or gold fish
When the fireworks disappear, let’s count the stars all night
Trees fading their colors, fingers that are ice cold, fires of the days we spent together
So that they won’t disappear in the piling snow, let’s leave some marks behind
A piece of paper
I reached for the door
Only one «yes», or a tiny rock
Something small like that can change your world
It’s simple
A «Good morning» everyday
See the blue ocean like a movie in the summer
Learning where you are from
We layers the moments, like a film
We reshoot over and over
Rather than fading or adding colors, the scenery where you are is more vibrant

How much further till I walk to the moon?
How many cold nights do I need to spend?
How many times do I need to say goodbye?
My eyes will be completely dried up
It will continue even after a thousand years
That’s how I thought
But it completely filled this void
What is this feeling?
It’s simple
A «Good morning» everyday
See the blue ocean like a movie in the summer
Learning where you are from
We layers the moments, like a film
We reshoot over and over
Rather than fading or adding colors, the scenery where you are is more vibrant
It’s ok if it was an instinct or sudden
I just thought like that, without any hesitations
I was asked if I can be trusted
That’s a simple question
I’ve been thinking about it, whenever
That voice follows me around
And pushing me forward
I see, this feeling is love
I hope the two fingers we reached over a fire of a thousand years ago
Are still shining after a thousand years later over there
«I don’t mind believing», I think I heard that
I looked up at the round moon
It was always shining down the world
I see, this feeling is love
How much further till I walk to the moon?
How many cold nights do I need to spend?
How many times do I need to say goodbye?
My eyes will be completely dried up
It will continue even after a thousand years
That’s how I thought
But it completely filled this void
What is this feeling?
A new wind will bring Spring
Ah, where the wind blows is where I should return to
It won’t change
How hot the summer is, or gold fish
When the fireworks disappear, let’s count the stars all night
Trees fading their colors, fingers that are ice cold, fires of the days we spent together
So that they won’t disappear in the piling snow, let’s leave some marks behind
A piece of paper
I reached for the door
Only one «yes», or a tiny rock
Something small like that can change your world
It’s simple
A «Good morning» everyday
See the blue ocean like a movie in the summer
Learning where you are from
We layers the moments, like a film
We reshoot over and over
Rather than fading or adding colors, the scenery where you are is more vibrant
It’s ok if it was an instinct or sudden
I just thought like that, without any hesitations
I was asked if I can be trusted

I’ve been thinking about it, whenever
That voice follows me around
And pushing me forward
I see, this feeling is love
It’s simple
A «Good morning» everyday
See the blue ocean like a movie in the summer
Learning where you are far
We layers the moments, like a film
We reshoot over and over
Rather than fading or adding colors, the scenery where you are is more vibrant
I hope the two fingers we reached over a fire of a thousand years ago
Are still shining after a thousand years later over there

TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You

Tonikawa: Over the Moon for You

Reviews
Please go through the full review for a better understanding! Might include some light spoilers, so I’ll give a spoiler warning!
Note: I know I am giving almost all a 10/10 but it’s for a reason!
And also please remember that this is my opinion and I respect others’ opinions as well.
Genre of Tonikaku Kawaii- Romantic Comedy, Science Fiction
2. Art- 10/10
The art.. what can I even say! It is such a cute, romance anime and of course has an amazing art style! A 10/10 from me. duh!
3. Sound- 9/10
Really loved the opening to this anime! I’m waiting for future episodes and I have read the manga so I’m really excited!
4. Character- 10/10
The characters are so well written! It’s not like (A light spoiler ahead!) Tsukasa is better than Nasa or Nasa is better than Tsukasa! They both balance each other perfectly and so. The Ultimate Ship! For the other characters, they are also amazing! Just watch the episodes will you?? :
tl;dr: A very poorly executed generic romantic «comedy» with a unique twist that doesn’t deliver and makes itself indistinguishable from others like it.
Good question Chitose, can we talk about it?
But first, can people stop praising this anime for being a romantic masterpiece? Because it’s really not.
Let’s start with the more unimportant stuff.
Art: (4/10) This is definitely an art style I haven’t seen before in anime, most likely because it’s supposed to directly reflect the mangaka’s art style, but «unique» doesn’t mean «good.» There is nothing really special about the art minus the art style. The character designs are bland, nothing stylistically appealing at all, just your typical romance SoL anime movements with some awkward movements and reaction faces.
Sound: (5/10) The Opening Sequence is pretty cool, suchasthebeatdroppingfasterthanGodofHighSchool’sMALScore, but besides that, the sound design is nothing extraordinary you’ve seen in romance anime. Sparkle sounds during cute moments, wacky noises when something «funny» happens, you know, your typical SoL sound stuff with nothing notable to mention.
Now to the important stuff.
Story: (2/10) To start off, this anime REALLY doesn’t care about the stuff about how they got together. We get our main protagonist Yuzaki Nasa, who’s an ambitious and somewhat pretentious thirteen-year-old student who suddenly gets truck-kuned into another universe, but instead of being isekaied to another universe, we get isekaied into our cute romance story when the main girl, Tsukuyomi Tsukasa (and soon Yuzaki Tsukasa) «magically» falls in love with the main protagonist and with him. This storyline is followed by its most iconic moment «I’ll only date you if you marry me!»
And this is where the story starts not making sense. When Nasa gets admitted to the hospital, he misses his high school entrance exams, studies for the next term, all for him just to drop out of school entirely and starts work as a minimum-wage worker «in hopes of finding Tsukasa.» Why the sudden personality change? Did he lose it when he got hit by the truck? Maybe you can find an excuse like «he didn’t want to work hard anymore» or «got tired by trying too hard», but that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the plot holes.
And the story conveniences only start there.
The next thing is about how they immediately get together after two years of being apart.
How did Tsukasa find Nasa? Not even Nasa knows that one! But let’s ignore that so we could get into our lovey dovey romance. But wait! Tsukasa managed to get her marriage papers because she wanted to get married with Nasa, where were Nasa’s papers? How did Tsukasa even GET those papers when it was clear that she ran away from home, shown in later episodes? HOW DID NASA GET HIS PAPERS? Wait, isn’t the legal age of getting married eighteen for males and sixteen for females in Japan? HOW WAS THIS MARRIAGE EVEN LEGAL?!
You get what I mean by plot conveniences? The author clearly just wanted to start the lovey dovey romance immediately that they just brush away the «irrelevant part» of their backstory of how they got together. People might not care, but this kind of thing really takes the reader out of the story and makes the romance between Tsukasa and Nasa comically unbelievable.
But maybe the romantic chemistry and storyline
As I said before, the only difference of this anime from other romance shows is that the main couple is married, that’s literally it. They go through awkward blushing lewd hand-holding hurdles, seeing each other naked for the first time, meeting their parents for the first time, you know, the typical stuff you see in any romance anime? There’s even a plot point where two girls blush over Nasa and end up kind of sad when they realize he’s married
The anime even ends with your generic cultural festival with their «sparkle sparkle moe moe kyun» yukatas but instead of a confession ruined by fireworks-kun, they kiss because they’re married, which I guess subverts your generic romance trope, but again, these two characters are married! Please act like you’re married instead of first-time dating high schoolers!
Characters: (2/10) Where do I even start with the characters? I already had my say on Tsukasa and Nasa, who are very well in the terms of a generic main girl and harem protagonist, respectively. Tsukasa is a little bit mysterious in the beginning when she abruptly enters Nasa’s life by saving it and ends up being a beat-red tsundere girl that gets flustered whenever Nasa does anything remotely cute. Nasa is also your typical harem nice-guy protagonist because he somehow gets all the girls because he’s… nice. Wow, haven’t seen THAT one before.
And besides the main two leads, the side characters are also laughably bad. One girl, who isn’t as remotely bad as the others Kaginoji’s, purpose is to try to break them up because she realized that this marriage isn’t even practical in the first place. Was she fourth-walling this entire time and calling out how stupid their relationship is? Two of Nasa’s childhood (girl) friends’ purposes was to be shocked that Nasa is married to a really cute girl, mope a little because they remotely like Nasa, then accept it and then move on without any repercussions or even help the two stop being embarrassed around each other.
Now thinking about it, is Nasa meant to be a self-insert male character where he gets a really cute girl to be his wife but also having a harem filled with other cute girls of a loli and an ara-ara one-chan? If so, then that makes a lot of sense. Gotta keep the Japanese birth rates high somehow, right?
Enjoyment: (4/10) I first got into this anime because people keep saying that this anime is «great» and a «refreshing» take on romance but in the end it’s your typical blushing embarrassed romantic couple riddled with your dense nice-guy protagonist with harem bait and moe girls. While the cute moments were indeed cute, the many, MANY flaws to the backstory in addition to the generic romantic nature made this anime a very bad watch. If you don’t really care about how two people end up together and just want a «cute couple does cute things» anime, then sure, go give it a watch.
Tonikaku Kawaii is an unusual and refreshing take on the rom-com genre, featuring a married couple. It changed things around by having the main characters get together from the very first episode, what is the end goal for the majority of rom-com anime was actually the starting point here.
Assuming you’ve read the synopsis, here’s the first thing that will put off a portion of the viewers, the premise is unrealistic and quite silly, we have a boy who fell in love with a girl that he doesn’t know anything about, and the girl in question wants to marry him for some reason. I’m stating the obvious here, but if a total stranger asks you to marry her in real life then she probably has bad intentions and you should get away from her ASAP. There is also one other thing that will test your suspension of disbelief, but I won’t say more about that.
If you are the type of viewer who cares a lot about realism and believability in fiction, then this show might not be for you. However, realism isn’t always necessary in fiction and I can overlook an unrealistic premise when the rest of the series has plenty of good to offer.
Now here’s the second thing that will make this anime unappealing to some people, the lack of a real plot and the lack of drama or conflict. There are hints of a plot and potential drama sprinkled into it, but Tonikaku Kawaii is a SoL rom-com for the most part, showing the daily lives of a married couple and the fun and cute moments they share with each other, so you watch it mostly for the characters and the character interactions.
Speaking of which, this anime doesn’t have a large cast of characters, we have our main ones, Nasa and Tsukasa, as well as several supporting characters that contribute to the show in a more comedic manner. Nasa is a refreshing character when compared to many male MCs in romance anime; he’s confident, honest, and straightforward with his feelings towards his wife. He does in the first episode what the majority of male protagonists cannot do for the entire duration of their anime, confessing to the girl he likes. He’s also smart when it comes to science and studies, but sometimes dumb when it comes to other things, which is used mostly for comedy. He’s not dense most of the time but there are a few moments where he acts that way, and some people may find the way he reacts to Tsukasa to be irritating in the early episodes.
Tsukasa is Nasa’s wife and she can be quite a mysterious character. She seems more like a standard kuudere at first, acting «cool» and showing little emotion, but she gets more expressive and interesting as time goes on. The character interactions between her and Nasa are an absolute joy to watch and are where most of my enjoyment for this show comes from; it’s fun seeing the otherwise calm Tsukasa getting embarrassed or blushing madly because of Nasa’s honesty and directness, they’re a couple that gets along very well and they play off of each other’s personalities; their interactions are cute, wholesome, and heartwarming, and they’re more expressive about their love than any anime couple I’ve ever seen.
However, if you don’t like these two characters or enjoy their interactions, then that’s going to be a deal-breaker for this series; some people want characters that display emotional tension, flaws and insecurities, but like I’ve said before, this anime is devoid of drama.
Now I’ll cover the most notable of the supporting characters: Kaname and Aya are Nasa’s friends and their personalities often lead to comedic scenes and character interactions, some of which you may find funny, others less so. Kaname is a dirty-minded girl and is the source of much teasing and embarrassment for Nasa, while Aya has an exaggerated «airhead» personality and is less interesting in my opinion. Chitose is another character and she sticks true to her archetype; some may dislike or consider her to be an unnecessary addition, I admit I don’t like her that much myself, but I think her character does contribute to the anime.
The comedy can be hit or miss, but it’s certainly much better than the average anime comedy imo. I personally found some of the jokes to be hilarious and they caught me by surprise, while some were alright and others not so much. There are moments when the characters will shout or react in an exaggerated fashion, and I find those scenes and the comedy in them to be working better in the manga simply because I don’t have to hear the shouting. The author likes making use of meta-jokes, and there’s a fair amount of references to well-known anime, movies, and other media in this show, which is something that isn’t seen that often in anime.
The art style is quite simple but fits the cute and light-hearted nature of the show, and the character designs are distinct from each other and fit their personalities. The anime mostly does a good job at replicating the manga’s artwork but is sometimes a step-down, unfortunately.
I felt that the voice actors did a great job in bringing out the personalities and emotions of the characters, particularly for Tsukasa, Nasa, and Kaname. The change of tone between the cool Tsukasa and the more emotional, happy, or embarrassed Tsukasa is seamless. As a manga reader, Nasa’s voice wasn’t initially what I had in mind but I got used to it; it fits his confident, good-natured, but sometimes silly personality, and when Kaname drops another dirty remark, you can feel the sarcastic and amused tone in her voice.
Overall, Tonikaku Kawaii was a very fun watch; it accomplishes what it sets out to do but won’t be up to everyone’s liking as a result. Among all the romance anime with ridiculous melodrama, love triangles, harem elements, spineless male MCs and violent female MCs, it was great just watching a likeable couple who love and respect each other instead.
tl;dr: It’s an unusual take on the rom-com genre, expect an unrealistic premise, enjoyable and wholesome interactions between the MCs, references, hit or miss comedy, and the lack of plot and drama.
* SPOILERS IN SPECIFIC PARAS *
After the shitty rom-com anime that came out in Summer this year, I am glad to find some good quality wholesome stuff. It’s been a really long time since something this fun came out and I am all for it.
ART AND ANIMATION-8
The art style is nice and fits in well with the way the story is shaped to be very cutesy, So, obviously there is not much sexualization of characters and nothing else being noteworthy in the animation.
Holy flippin moly, this show has one really good OST. Even if you don’t watch the anime I highly recommend you to watch the OST ( It’s not a slow love song, but a rap). The voice acting has been done well to fit the role of the characters.
To cleanse your mind of the scum of society and the world which is Kazuya, this season we have been blessed with this great MC who is smart, understanding and doesn’t have his mind in the fricking gutter and doesn’t fap all day. He is so chad that he asks the girl he asks a girl out while he is bleeding a fountain from his head and is running on 100% adrenaline and the girl even accepts(somewhat). This guy doesn’t have any weird thoughts and is over the moon when he holds hands. So, yeah if you are still recovering from Kanojo Okarishimasu, this is the show for you.
I am really enjoying this anime and for the 23 mins that I watch it I have a smile on my face, no complaints here.
You should definitely give this anime a try with an open mind and not be too constricted by common understanding and beliefs. This is anime, where we have fun with unimaginable circumstances and fun moments.
So. Tonikaku Kawaii. This is a series for which I have diligently followed the manga since about 4 months after its initial release. It’s now been over 2 years, and my interest hasn’t waned in the slightest. However, this review will only be a review of the anime and not the manga. It should hold up until the anime is over, so I probably won’t need to edit this. I’ve included a tl;dr at the end, along with a ‘should I watch it’ segment, so those who are on the fence, just go read that. That said, here’s a review of Tonikaku Kawaii.
Art : 8.5/10. The artwork in Tonikaku Kawaii (also I refuse to call it Tonikawa) is pretty good. It’s got really nice character designs, although since they are inherited from the manga I’m not sure if that counts as praise for the anime or not. I will say that the slight edits to character models that they made are pretty good, such as making Nasa’s head bigger and making Tsukasa’s face a bit rounder. That may just be the difference in aspect ratio from manga to TV, so don’t quote me on that. The environments aren’t stunning but they’re pleasant to look at, and all characters move with a smooth and crisp animation style that is a blessing on my eyes after so many weeks of only seeing older anime. As for CGI, I didn’t see any if there was any, and that means that the effects artists have done their jobs perfectly.
Sound: 10/10. Now this is something. I rarely give 10/10 in sound because, as a musician, I’m a lot more accustomed to judging songs and voices. That being said, WOW. This actually blew me away. Koi no Uta by Tsukasa Tsukuyomi and Yunomi was something I had no idea I needed. It’s very rare for me to feel anything when watching an OP, except maybe hype, because that’s what they’re designed to generate. I often have songs that I love listening to even purely as songs, without the visuals. That includes genuine classics like Again and A Cruel Angel’s Thesis, masterful musical compositions in their own right, to mindless ear fodder like the Black Bullet OP, which I like simply because it sounds good. That said, let’s get back to this Koi no Uta. Right off the bat we’re greeted with a melancholic traditional Japanese string instrument playing a simple four-note melody. The chords are pretty firmly in the minor and flat, with one of them in major. This establishes a pretty sad tone for the rest of the song. This is reinforced by the opening lines, both in terms of vocal performance and lyrical meaning. Then as the second verse opens and the voice transitions into major but the same melody remains, it gives the feeling of change without sacrificing that air of melancholy. The next four lines have a decidedly more upbeat tone, but still reserved, signifying Tsukasa’s sudden surprise and hesitant joy that she’s found someone she loves. So far so good, right. That’s what I thought when I first heard this OP. I thought that it’d be a perfectly good sadness to happiness song. Then came the electronic. And suddenly all my expectations were flipped. Suddenly the voice launches into an extremely fast and flat speak-singing delivery that on its own sounds extremely dull, with minimal pitch shifts and non-existent rhythmic variance, but against the backdrop of the rising electronic beats, it sounds extremely tense and exciting. The visuals back this up as well, with the rapidly alternating half-screen panels that alone are really simple, but with the fast-paced music and words, seems to rush by. The tension is ramped even higher by the first chorus, in which hearing the electronic melody, and while its the exact same notes as the initial melody, they’ve been adjusted slightly by the mixer and end up sounding happier as a result. And as the visuals go faster and faster, and the words come even faster, I actually began to feel adrenaline rushing through my blood. I was watching intently, hyper-focused on the incredible payoff I was sure was coming. And then the beat dropped. And while I would love to tell you that this was the highlight, the moment when all my tension turned into catharsis (yes, I feel cathartic by listening to music, fight me) the beat drop was incredible. But the title card is so laughably stupid that I almost feel like it’s a parody of something. Then comes the end which is pretty good, but now that my tension has dissipated due to that idiotic title screen, I only found it pretty good. That being said, I have to give this OP props for originality. High electronic music is really rare in anime. So, Yunomi, you who had the brilliant idea to fuse future bass, dubstep and traditional music together, just, mad respect. Now that I’ve written my essay on the opening let’s get to rest of the sound. The voice actors are good. Nasa’s voice actor took some time to get used to because I always imagined him having a higher-pitched voice, but I got over it pretty soon. The ED is unmemorable. I’m sure it’s good, it’s just not good enough for me to remember it. Now, back to the OP. My thoughts on this OP are mixed, and I can’t help mentally comparing it to another opening that I love to death ‘A Cruel Angel’s Thesis’. And while many would consider these to be completely different (and they are), one mustn’t forget that before Eva, this sort of opening was unheard of, much like Koi no Uta. So it is my hope that this will go on to define the meta for anime openings in the new decade. Do I think it will reach the same heights as thesis? Hell, no. So much of thesis’s success was predicated on the show it was attached to being a classic, and while I love the anime, it isn’t a classic like Eva, that’s for sure. Now back to actual anime, I promise.
Character: 10/10. Another 10! Although this one is more debatable as I’m not sure how much of my opinion is pulled from knowledge I have of these characters from the manga. One thing is for sure: Tsukasa is best girl of 2020, and I refuse to accept any disagreement on that. Nasa is pretty good too, he’s a hard worker, is pretty diligent and book smart but a bit airheaded. He’s kind and thoughtful, but extremely naïve, making him an endlessly entertaining character. Tsukasa is, well, you just have to watch the show. I guarantee that you will be in love with her by episode 3. I have watched hundreds on romance shows, ranging from your name to gamers! And never once have I felt jealous of the main character. Until now. I actually burn with jealousy when I think of this couple and find myself wishing that I had someone that amazing and special in my life.
Enjoyment: 10/10. Enjoyment is highly subjective. I love absurdist comedies and I love comedic romances, I love cute as hell waifus and I love genuine passion in a project. And that brings to a little tidbit of knowledge that makes me enjoy the show a little bit more. This entire manga was written just so that the mangaka could brag about his super-cute wife. And that just makes me feel so happy and warm inside. I don’t think one could actually have a bad time watching this show. They might not enjoy it, but I can’t see anyone hating the show.
Should I Watch It: if you’re into comedies and light-hearted shows that don’t take themselves too seriously, go give this a try. If you’re a fan of romance, go give this a try. If you’re in the mood for edginess, ecchi, plot and/or themes, go watch something else.
Overall : 9.5/10. I love it. I don’t particularly care if you do or not.
Simply, the best rom-com that i could watch in the last year. It´s feel really fresh and it’s really easily to enjoy!
A romance in its purest and most beautiful state, with some mystery and its questions and of course, funny moments that can make you laugh repeatedly.
The way that develop the main couple is really original and cute, and would make you, and definitely will make you want to watch more.
This Show is the best Romance I’ve ever seen, let me tell you why.
This show has two lovable main characters, the straight-forward and smart(but dense) Nasa Yuzaki who just has a wholesome love for Tsukasa, his wife.
Tsukasa Yuzaki is a cool, level-headed and cute girl who is married to Nasa but loses her composure with Nasa’s direct, and cute declarations of love that are so wholesome it will make your heart melt.
This is the best romance anime of 2020 imo.
«It is a small step for man, a big leap for humanity». Neil Armstrong spoke these beautiful words in 1969, when he crewed his first trip to the moon. 51 years later, an anime for the first time the astronomical victory of mankind to create one of the coolest anime of 2020. And guess what? The small step is a wedding and the big leap is for a recent, sudden, but sincere and quite comical love.
Tsukasa, on the other hand, is a very mysterious girl. She is reserved about her past and we don’t even know her relatives, except for her sister. In fact, Tsukasa’s sister is an important character in the couple’s relationship (although she can be irritating in most cases). The show was able to use the sense of protection of one sister with the other, to give us a moral lesson on the reasons for getting married. «Marriage is not done with love already proven, but to prove love». These words were said by Nasa, as that Tsukasa’s sister begins to ease her fears about her sister’s feelings and comes to believe that all this madness can work.
Since the beginning of their union, we have seen a positive evolution of the couple, where their love was characterized in detail. Seeing the episodes when Tsukasa moved during the night, in addition to Nasa’s reactions, were cute to see. And behold, the groom has his first night when he slept badly. But it does not matter. For him, since he is next to the one she loves, he sacrifices himself to make her happy. Even though his house was on fire, he faces each event with optimism and obtains to unite the couple’s relationship even more.
And the anime brings even more fun things, mainly Kaname and Aya, two absolutely lovely characters, especially Kaname, who always finds his Senpai in an unusual situation, whether in a morning bath or in more intimate moments, such as small house that she offered the couple for as long as they need to move. The comedy genre makes us even forget about the show’s romance proposal, which guided the story for most of its time. In addition, we had a fervent battle between all the girls, in a video game competition, where Aya stands out a lot. The episodes of Nasa’s parents also contributed so that we could get to know our protagonist better! Who knew a boy would get married so soon. Not even his own family expected it. I imagine such a concern about leaving your beloved son in the care of a girl who barely knows her right.
But the most interesting thing that I managed to get out of the anime was the theories about the bride Tsukasa. Her speeches from time to time have produced multiple interpretations as to her own origin. As much as we saw a cute and caring girl with her husband, she has an apparently well-experienced culture and worldview, as if she were older. Events like the couple’s tour of Nara, her cooking methods, the accident of the first episode and her age are still a legal mystery to be seen. In addition, the author uses a reference to Kaguya-hime, a culturally famous story in Japan that can project a future in relation to the Moon, for example. It is no coincidence that we have the protagonist named after the American space station and «Over the Moon for You» as a continuation of the anime title. The show has already given us clues as to what is to come and I am really looking forward to a continuation. Anime is competent in what it does and it seems that it knew how to make good use of the national culture that the manga has, in the most tangible way possible. I hope that one day we find out who Tsukasa really is.
Overall, Tonikaku Kawaii was one of the most respectable animes of 2020 and I hope he will always be remembered for reminding us that there are still shows that combine elements like comedy and romance so well. I admit that I was concerned to see a low number of characters for the central story, but what was delivered exceeded all expectations. The show was able to enter the anime platform and this is a good start for a well-known and famous manga franchise. The way of building the anime can be a bit annoying, with separate episodes in the middle of the couple’s most remarkable moments. It probably made me give it a not so high grade. But, what matters is that the show went a small step towards becoming something big in the vast world of anime.
In all the 15 years I’ve been watching anime, I don’t think I’ve seen an anime quite like this one. As of right now, I feel that it would take a lot for them to ruin what they’ve started here. Just from 6 episodes I can tell that this anime, with a direction that revolves around the relationship between a couple, is one of a kind.
What this anime has accomplished is extraordinary. It finds a way to express romance without overbearing itself, and finds the right spots to place the comedy to keep the story entertaining. That in its own is an amazing accomplishment.
While Tonikaku Kawaii may have its fair share of cliches, it also seems to be aware of itself and tends to break these cliches in a manner that I haven’t seen in rom-com anime for a long time. For all these reasons, let me express to you that this anime is definitely not a typical or generic rom-com.
For the music, Yunomi has done a superb job in creating an exciting and memorable opening theme. It’s an opening theme I feel a lot of people won’t skip, especially if they’re fans of Yunomi.
While Tonikaku Kawaii is, in its own, a marvelous breath of fresh air to the genre, I also believe that their approach was ambitious and may not necessarily appeal to all types of viewers. But if you enjoy heartwarming, romantic anime that you can relax and enjoy yourself to, this anime is for you. This anime is, to put in one word is: «Comfortable.» A simply comfortable story to relax and settle down to.
While Tonikaku Kawaii has an enormous amount of potential, there are still the negatives about the show, which I’ll be discussing next.
The story of Tonikaku Kawaii is very simple, and almost non-existent at times. It seems to hope that its ability to show the lives and development of the characters will be enough to grasp the viewers and keep them wanting more. I believe they’ve achieved this. I feel that the story can go in any direction and is at this point, relatively unpredictable. However, this simplicity can be a double edged sword and may not appeal to those who prefers anime with a solid storyline.
Another downside to Tonikaku Kawaii is that it probably won’t benefit from more than 12 episodes. So I won’t be expecting any major installations or sequels to the anime in the future. I believe this anime will probably be 12 episodes, and that will be the end. The bright side to this is that it seems this anime is rewatchable to a relatively good degree, that could give way for some OVA or special content afterwards should the anime get popular enough. While I do state this, I do feel that if there were a sequel I would definitely keep watching regardless.
Sadly, this anime may stay as a niche favorite. It may not get a whole lot of publicity and may very well not be spoken about due to its appearance of being a simple rom-com duplicate, and its unique and different direction. Regardless, I do urge you to give it a shot, it definitely captured me a lot more than I was expecting.
Story: 7
Art: 8
Sound: 10
Character: 10
Enjoyment: 10
Overall: 10
The enjoyment I’ve received from this anime has, I believe, outweighed its lack of story and by its own is an accomplishment to the rom-com genre, in my opinion. One thing I’ve always found frustrating was the lack of back-bone many protagonists of rom-coms and other romance anime seem to have, this anime removes that frustration and slaps it right across the face. It obliterates that irritating feeling when something ridiculous happens to stop the development of the characters, and just lets it happen. Tonikaku Kawaii has delivered a huge blow to the face of every rom-com out there and is a story that is made *for* the viewers of the rom-com genre, a fantasy we all wanted to see happen for once, and one that I will remember.
How would you describe a HAPPY marriage in three words?
— LOVE, HONESTY, PERSEVERANCE
— RESPECT, PATIENCE, UNDERSTANDING
Instead of the usual things, these three words can be used to describe Tonikaku Kawaii:
— HAND HOLDING BUFFET
— TSUKASA DELAYS F……
— MOON GETS MARRIED
.
Have your insulin syringe ready and follow the life of our happy and wholesome couple:
JUST TOO CUTE.
STORY:
Have you ever dreamed of how nice it would be to be isekai’d by truck-kun and wake up in a world that is much better than your current one? Sure, this is a dream of all of us.
That happened ALMOST to our main protagonist, Nasa, when he saw a cute girl on the other side of the street and therefore wanted to cross it. But instead of losing his life in this world, the sweet girl saved his life. Before he was finally brought to the hospital by the same girl and woke up there, he managed to ask her if she would like to date him. After a moments silence, she turns around and tells him that if he marries her she’ll go out with him.
Nasa has done everything possible to be able to see the love of his life again. Instead of going to high school, he decides to solely focus on jobs that involve delivery and serving customers in the hopes of meeting that girl once again. As in a dream, one day his Kaguya-Hime Tsukasa appears in front of his apartment and the paper they hand in at the registry office was the happiest document of Nasa’s life.
From now on the daily life of our newly married couple began. We experience their stories, their first night together, their first and second honeymoon. Basically, every wholesome moment. There doesn’t have to be a deep story behind it, but watching all the wonderful moments are already magical enough for us.
CHRACTERS:
«No matter what fate comes at me with, I should be able to do something about it.» – Nasa Yuzaki.
We can all learn something from his attitude. Nasa who would become “a man who’s as vast as space. «, that’s the reason his father gave him this name. He is very clever and proud of himself, our main protagonist is also one of the most reliable people. However, what identifies him above all other things is the love he feels for his wife Tsukasa. He fell in love with her at first sight and he always think how cute she if, every day, every moment. Where do you experience that in a marriage nowadays?
«I would never marry someone I didn’t fall in love with.» – Tsuakasa Yuzaki (Tsukuyomi before marriage).
She really loves Nasa, no doubt about this. Tsukasa has a mysterious background story, but not much is known about it so far. At first, Tsukasa appears to act very cool, calm and level-headed. But over time she shows a lot more emotions than just being calm. She gets embarrassed very easily whenever Nasa proclaims his love for her and how cute she is. Her hobbies are the same as us: Anime, games, movies, TV etc, at least one little thing in common. Besides that, she has a lot knowledge about the Japanese history. Even she knows deep down in her heart that Nasa could never love another person, she becomes jealous when Nasa talks to other girls. Having the Kanji “月“ in her name we can assume that there is certainly a connection to Kaguya-Hime. Standing in the full moon makes her even more beautiful.
It is really fate that they found each other. The perfect couple.
In addition to our main characters, we also have some excellent support characters. Let’s start with our Tsundere blonde cute girl Chitose. Tsukasa saved her from falling off a cliff when they were children. Since that moment, Chitose decided to use her own life for the sake of Tsukasa to pay her back. At the beginning she was completely against the marriage of them but seeing how happy her “Onee-sama” with Nasa-kun is, she is also very happy about it, although she does not let it be expressed.
Without the whole Arisugawa family, our married couple would be in deep trouble after their apartment burned down. Kaname, the younger sister, has a very outgoing personality. Despite her young age, she is very mature and always gives good suggestions to Nasa-kun to help him out with his couple life. She couldn’t believe it when one day Nasa-kun suddenly came as a married man. But she wishes the couple all the best. Her older sister Aya is a bit slow when it comes to understanding some important things. As a result, she did not initially get the point that Nasa-kun had married already. She had a crush on him since she was 10. But she never had the courage to confess her feelings to Nasa. However, she decides to not sulk over this situation to not make her first love meaningless. And with courage and pride she congrats with them for their marriage.
The character development of everyone can be clearly felt, not only Tsukasa and Nasa have changed through the marriage, but their environment is also affected by it.
ART:
The art style also only has two words: cute and wholesome. Although it is not particularly eye-catching, you can feel the warmth this anime exudes. You just feel great watching this anime.
SOUND:
The OP «Koi no Uta» was sung by Tsukasa aka Akari Kitou. Her name is known for me since she voiced also my «Sleepy Goddess» Kanata Konoe from Love Live! Nijigasaki. In general, she has a role in many CGDCT series, such as Adachi to Shimamura, Hitoribocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu or Re: Stage! Dream Days ♪. I also like all of these series extremely. We don’t hear an idol OP or anything like that here, instead the music starts a bit more traditional and slower. But in the second part the music and the lyrics get much faster, you can tell that there is more movement here.
The ED «Tsuki to Hoshizora“ on the other hand is performed by KanoeRana. She is quite new in this scene but her song is amazing. You can really hear the happiness and love from the music.
ENJOYMENT:
I enjoyed every episode, everything was just too wholesome. It’s a very cute slice of life anime. This is a marriage that everyone loves to see and we can only wish them all the best! May they live happily together till the end!
Please give us a second season of this wholesome- and cuteness!
nice and easy to watch wholesome rom-com that makes me roll into a fluff ball out of sheer cuteness and sweetness of the character.
I’m always a sucker for romance which ended in marriage. But marriage from the start? Y E S, absolutely.
The story is a 5/10 though but since I don’t usually give rom-com with no drama tag more than a 6. This is quite high.
Other criterias are hovering at either 8/9/10.
Overall, it’s a 10. The show is full of wholesome love.
If you like a light watch, go give this show a try.
This is just another run-of-the-mill rom-com hidden under a premise of marriage.
Characters: 4
Nasa is a young man who, apparently, never touched a girl, never saw a girl, never breathed the same air of a girl and was never in the same room as a girl. Both characters so far have quite little personality. Nasa is a pervert yet smart (at least) guy with 0 common sense that frequently has questions like «What if I hold her like a pillow when we sleep» or «How can I sneak out and see my wife naked?»
The fact that Nasa is a guy without common sense, in other animes could turn out to be funny, the problem is that that in this show he manages to make use of all the romantic comedy tropes and not do anything interesting with the characters. The series overlooked an obvious development between these two characters, for example; a first kiss, a proposal, a wedding, etc. I feel that it tries so hard to convice me that they are the perfect couple and were united by fate. There seems to be very little heart or thought put into this central aspect of the show, but I suppose it’s what one should expect from a superficial relationship fantasy.
Tsukasa, his wife is kinda decent because she is cute and not kinky stuff or ecchi. She is capable enough to be cute when a scene calls for it, but most of the time she is shy and submissive for Mr. Simp. The girl doesn’t have much personality and was only made to be the perfect couple and fulfill the expectations and fantasies of every man. The fourth chapter tried to develop Tsukasa but it was too vague to consider it as development. Although Tukasa is quite mature for her age, Nasa is someone embarrassing who behaves like a total pervert. And for the people that defends him saying he is not a pervert, please open your eyes. For example, in the 6th episode they made a thousand jokes about Nasa being hot with what his wife was doing in his dreams. Later, when he thinks about moving to a bigger place, his first thought was a mental image of Tsukasa coming out of the bathroom with only a tower wrapped aroung her, to tell him to take a bath with her. And every «pervert act» its justified by him saying: «I mean, I can, because. she is my wife.» I’m not saying if this is natural or not, im just saying he is a pervert and behaves as one, and all his bullshit about not understanding ANYTHING about how girls think only makes it worse; for him, even taking pictures of her is enough to make him scream, blush, and act like a drooling dog, and even the things she recognizes as romantic, he automatically sees it as an opportunity to touch her. Is that all this young man thinks? The worst part is that Nasa is not a teen, he is an adult, and behaving like this isn’t identificable. If thats «normal» or «healthy» for you, I’m worried about how you think. And no, a person cannot justify this by saying «He is in love» because, if so, that love has no basis, they have practically just met. And besides, okay, the virgin boy fell in love in two seconds, thats alright but, when did she fell in love with him? In the second episode, she already blushes for every stupid thing he says and every kinky reacion he has. Like I said, I don’t hold this at all.
Love is not simple and never so rushed.
Art & Sound: 4
In the audiovisual section, the sound is not bad, although there are some that seem to have come from «FreeAudioLibrary.com», the OST is nothing memorable though. Visually, the opening is very nice (reminds me to the chuunibyou one) and the song is good and catchy.
The animation is nothing remarkable or memorable, I would say is below average. I don’t end up liking the pastel color palette, it has some effects like the house shaking that are awful to watch. The character designs are vague and not very original, here I can say its just my taste, but at least for me, I don’ t like them.
Enjoyment: 5
While watching the series, I read a lot of comments saying the series was very funny. I really don’t understand if it’s because people identify with Nasa of irs just their humor that makes them laugh. I’m not judging, just trying to understand. There were other people saying Nasa was a TOTAL GENIOUS and that he is much smarter and bolder than other mc’s. No, he is not. He is desperate and the anime tries to convince you the other way around, trying to develop a love story that has NO sustentance in a really short time. I mean, what kind of sustentance can this story have other than a superficial attraction and a guy who couldn’y live very well for years because he couldn’t foget a girl he saw once?
The show has things I find funny like the references, but them dialogue is generic, which I think its fine. The problem is that when it is not generic, it is incredibly stupid. Although they are not too many, except for Nasa and every time he opens his mouth, there are some cute moments well done. The problem is that 2 seconds later you will get a silly joke or pointless actiion.
If you’ve just started watching anime or rom-coms, you might find this funny. I think, after all this is a shonen comedy. However, in case you are not new or have already seen a lot of naime of this genre, you might not find this funny due to all the most common cheap jokes that are usually used in rom-com’s. Everyone has different opinions and I respect that. If you like this kind of things then go watch it.
If you wanted a romance story with interesting characters who together will explore themes of a mature relationship and married life, forget about Tonikawa. Aside from the holes in the plot and excessive comforts to it, I consider this to be a below average show.
«Wait, you’re telling me we get to see them get married?» We’ve seen the same love story play out countless times before. Boy meets girl, they fall in love, they struggle to confess, and the show ends right as the relationship finally gets off the ground. It’s tried, it’s tested, it’s tropey as all hell. Aside from the «Will They, Won’t They» conundrum, shows typically avoid romantic conflict like the plague. For whatever reason, audiences are sadly subjected to this constant retreading of material.
Tonikaku’s solution to all this seemed like a breath of fresh air: Put a ring on it! The series forgoes platonic courtship in favor of finally giving audiences a lighthearted take on married life. Our newly-wedded husband is Nasa Yuzaki, who at 16 almost had his life end abruptly in a disastrous accident. Miraculously he survives, thanks to the intervention of his future wife Tsukasa. On that fateful night, the infatuated Nasa asks Tsukasa out. Two years later, they get hitched, and this all happens in the span of the first episode. Sounds wholesome and sweet… cute even. But in spite of its promising premise, one can tell right away that Tonikaku has little interest in doing what we’ve already seen before.
The building blocks are there to support Tonikaku’s exploration of what being a married couple entails. Several segments of the show are fun mini infomercials, dedicated to going over the spending habits and practices of middle-class residents in Japan. The Yuzakis face practical problems on a daily basis, and learn what it’s like to share a living space with someone from the opposite gender. The young couple also spend time dealing with the consequences of suddenly getting married, and Tonikaku does an impressive job with making their matrimony make sense in a lifelike setting. Topics include purchasing marriage rings, property guarantor laws, and dreaded visits to the In-Laws. These tidbits may be enough to placate audiences looking to get invested in some semblance of realism. While I did find those parts of the show inoffensive, any goodwill I may have had gets thrown out the window once the show settles into its repetitive groove.
For most, Tonikaku’s central conceit is the show’s greatest strength; for others, its biggest weakness. On one hand, you have a show poised to deliver its spin on relationships not often popularized in anime. On the other, you have a show that intends to explore marriage only in name; even though Nasa and Tsukasa are a registered couple, they AREN’T married. They may go through daily-life struggles and share moments similar to those between married couples, but fail to put on a convincing relationship. Watching Tonikaku was watching two innocent children, whose pairing makes no sense outside of its shotgun-marriage premise, declaring sweet nothings and grandiose monologues about romance. The show trivialises and simplifies life-long intimacy to the point where the Yuzakis are barely indistinguishable from your stock «puppy-love» couples. That’s not a bad thing on its own; not every romance SOL is required to provide some insightful truth on the subject. However, it’s worth stressing that what the show is attempting is woefully at odds with what is advertised. Tonikaku is fully content with leaving its ambition at the altar, in favor of playing on familiar ground and formulaic jokes. The former greatly diminished my excitement for the story. As for the latter… well, let’s get into it.
The series suffers from its poor use of characters. By far the biggest offender is Nasa, who is kind, ever-prepared and intelligent… except when he’s not. Tonikaku constantly destroys this positive image by instead handing us a daft teenager, who simped so hard it accidentally scored him a wife, almost at the cost of his life. Unless the plot demands him to be the purest snowflake alive, Nasa is possessive and downright horny. He finds strange obsessions within the most unassuming of situations; ranging from following his wife to the lingerie section, to awkwardly cuddling his wife as she sleeps, to undressing his wife in his mind as she changes in the other room (this occurs multiple times, mind you.) Not all these instances are bad, such as the scene in Episode 2 where the newly-wed couple share their first night together. It’s at least a scenario unique to the show, and in small doses I’d find these scenarios to be mildly amusing… cute even. But then the joke just keeps going. and going… and going, ad nauseam. This Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Horny Hyde dichotomy does the character no favors. I’m constantly told he’s this unselfish and thoughtful individual, but I’m witnessing a child given the means to act out his flights of pubescent fantasy onto a fellow virgin. Speaking of Tsukasa, her utilization in the show is equally irresponsible. While her charming character is inoffensive, what sucks is that she’s constantly objectified by her Hubby Dearest. These disturbing interactions make up a huge chunk of Tonikaku, leaving me unimpressed and unconvinced whenever the show indulges in preaching how kind and compatible and lovey-dovey our power couple are. It’s kind of appalling how immature these characters are at times, and how they get away with their creepy implications and one-dimensional characterization just because «they’re married.»
If the main ‘ship is insufferable, the secondary cast is largely unremarkable. Kaname’s sketches are the saving grace of the series and always put a smile on my face. Most of her gags are low-brow comedy, but they’re enjoyable in a way that Nasa’s simping is not. The key difference is that Kaname’s jokes are very clearly meant to be provocative, while Nasa’s testosterone-driven desires are framed as «wholesome.» Aya’s cluelessness is also pretty entertaining, with some of the series’ funniest bits under her belt. Nasa’s parents received quite a lot of build-up but fell disappointingly short of expectations. Lastly, Chitose and her maids are pretty awful, with Chitose in particular playing an uninspired tsun. She somehow makes Nasa look less dumb when she’s on-screen, so that’s quite the impressive feat.
The show is disappointing to look at. Some shows’ «chibi» slapstick asides look more detailed than the entirety of the series. Sure, it keeps in-line with the mangaka’s drawing style, but the simplicity of the presentation makes me wonder if the studio picked up this adaptation knowing they could get away with a cheap cash-grab. The monetary cost-cutting devolved to unintentionally silly levels, when about 1-2 minutes of «Street Fighter V» screen-capture footage was spliced in throughout Ep 11. Tonikaku’s OP could have nearly been the best of 2020, if the budget had not run out as the title card dropped. Nothing stood out to me in the score, and the VA performances are nothing special. Konomi Kohara (Chika Fujiwara, Yuuko Yoshida) sounds like she’s phoning in her performance as Chitose, and doesn’t sound like she’s having nearly as much fun as she did in Machikado Mazoku.
Tonikaku is no love story, it’s wish fulfilment. There is no honest attempt at exploring married life, outside your every I-Love-Yous and embarrassed kisses. What we have instead are immature characters involved in a series of formulaic sketches that are either unfunny or disturbingly horny. I’d like to think that Truck-kun really was waiting in the wings to transport Nasa’s soul into another world. A world only slightly different from our own, where the perfect girl falls into your reincarnated lap and is wholly submissive to your every request. And judging from the love Tonikaku is getting, there may well be an audience for this proposed isekai. Unfortunately, I’m just not a huge fan.
In forgoing the confession phase, Tonikaku attempts to mislead you into thinking it sets itself apart from a typical romance story. Unfortunately, it’s hard to see much merit with this decision when the characters are written with the same, if not greater, lack of maturity that plagues its contemporaries. Missed opportunities with exploring married life leaves a sour taste in my mouth. There are some moments that make for laid-back viewing, but Tonikaku’s warped perception of love ensures that such opportunities are the exception and not the norm. Tonikaku comes across as a cheaply-produced «flavor of the month» SOL, that I wouldn’t get nearly so riled up about if it wasn’t so widely hailed as the Romance of the season. 4/10
OK, that’s it from me. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’d like to write about an actual good romance story… more on that soon enough. Thanks for making it this far in my rant, I apologize if I failed to communicate my critique effectively here. If you happen to like my verbose rants (they’re a lot more civil I swear,) feel free to check out my other reviews for seasons past and present, peace

Tonikawa: Over The Moon For You season 2 confirmed
Fans will get the chance to fall in love all over again, with season 2 of the hit anime series ‘Tonikawa: Over The Moon For You’ being confirmed!
2020 was pretty rough on everyone but thankfully, the anime industry was there to provide some much-needed entertainment during lockdown.
This was especially the case for the romantic comedy series ‘Tonikawa: Over The Moon For You’ – also known as Fly Me to the Moon.
Countless fans around the world fell in love with the anime and its characters, which was arguably one of the ‘cutest’ series of the year.
The first season concluded in late-December, but new information on Tonikawa: Over The Moon For You’s return with season 2 has now been shared online!

Tonikawa season 2 finally confirmed
It’s fantastic news for fans of Tonikawa: Over The Moon For You, the anime has been officially renewed for season 2!
The announcement was made in the latest edition of the Weekly Shonen Jump Magazine – see below for the image.
However, not many fans would have been too surprised by the news as anime renewals are usually dependent on two factors; popularity and source material.
Tonikawa: Over The Moon For You became a fan-favourite series as soon as it debuted in early-October 2020 and was arguably one of the better Crunchyroll originals of the entire year.
One year after the first broadcast concluded, the anime is scoring a 4/5 on Anime Planet, 7.8/10 on IMDB, 7.92/10 on My Anime List and 4.9/5 on Crunchyroll – easily popular enough to warrant a second season.
@Crunchyroll @WatchVRV PLEASEEEEEEEEEE tell me we getting a Tonikawa Season 2
Then we have the source material, which in this case comes from the original manga series by Kenjiro Hata. At the time of writing, 17 volumes of the manga series have been published (with eight of those also being published in English).
According to Monsters & Critics, season 1 jumped around the original story points but concluded by wrapping up the fourth volume of the manga. This means there is plenty of source material left to adapt into at least two if not three or four more seasons of anime!
Some fans may also not be aware that a special OVA episode titled ‘SNS’ released on August 18th, 2021 – the episode is available on Crunchyroll.
Tonikawa season 2 release date…
Unfortunately, the announcement confirming Tonikawa season 2 made no mention of a potential release date. However, we can make some predictions based on the production schedule from season 1.
The series was announced in early March 2020 and debuted in early October; a roughly seven months release cycle.
Assuming that season 2 would experience a similar production schedule, fans could be able to tune into the premiere in July 2022 on the Summer slate.

Reviews
If you have extreme opinions about Tonikawa: Over the Moon For You, I suggest you do not read this review; it may make you angry.
I will fully admit I am not the target audience of this anime. Even though it made me want to die, I finished it so you don’t have to.
For the next two years, he obsesses over Tsukasa. He desperately tries to track down the one girl who gave him a breadcrumb of affection. It’s immediately clear Nasa has never touched a woman who isn’t his mom. He literally dropped out of high school to search for her. It wasn’t until he turned 18 that she showed up at his door ready to get married, and they lived happily ever after. except not quite. To say they rushed into things would be stating the obvious, but that’s the appeal. It’s not your average rom-com because they’re married! Except, it is.
It takes more than awkward encounters between two love-struck kids to make a funny romantic comedy. Real jokes and clever visual gags would help. And a story would help. Throughout the show, the newlyweds go on dates and do mundane activities. They passionately love each other at first sight, so their relationship doesn’t progress aside from escalating physical contact. If you think that description was unbelievably tedious and lacking in anything remotely resembling originality, imagine sitting there and watching it all play out throughout its seemingly endless 12 episodes. Even if the visuals weren’t subpar and amateur, the tedious writing would still weigh it down. This show is not cute, it’s not wholesome, it’s not funny, and it is rather dull. It is a halfhearted, undercooked anime production, and to no one’s surprise, Crunchyroll funded it.
Tsukasa is what would happen if Reddit engineered the perfect anime wife. She’s like Nasa’s maid… with benefits. She cooks, cleans, compliments him, and does whatever he wants with no complaints. She is incapable of making decisions in her relationship with Nasa. Which I’m sure is a turn on for a lot of people. In the first episode, Nasa holds Tsukasa’s hand a little too tight and says a lot of creepy shit. She gets uncomfortable and speaks up. Nasa calls her an «All-I-can-grab» and says, «Marriage is awesome.» Tsukasa is concerned, then she tacitly accepts his advances to appease him. Throughout the show, Nasa makes a majority of the choices, even if it makes her uncomfortable—such as constantly taking pictures when she asks him not to.
In traditional relationships, men wear the pants. Their opinions on everything relating to the home and marriage are decisive. That’s why there’s no conflict in their relationship. The few times Tsukasa voices her own opinion is for Nasa’s sake, such as saving him money. When Nasa proposes moving to a bigger apartment, Tsukasa disagrees because she wants to be close to him. Her decision isn’t for her sake, it is to show how much she loves him. Tsukasa never stands up to Nasa, despite showing that she disagrees with him. I wouldn’t be surprised if she were secretly an alien planning to eat his pea-sized brain.
Their relationship has more in common with a child playing with a doll rather than an actual marriage. Nasa does everything you shouldn’t do in a relationship, just short of jumping Tsukasa. Oh wait, he does that too. His way of showing affection seems only to entail creeping on his wife. When she leaves her dirty laundry out in the open, he sniffs it like a pervert. When she feels uncomfortable and asks him not to look at her, he takes a photo. While she is asleep, he ponders whether to grope or kiss her. Multiple times. This isn’t wholesome. When they go clothes shopping, she picks out a Summer outfit, and Nasa says, «I think it might be a little revealing. The idea of another guy seeing so much of you is kinda…» Implying that he can’t let any man look at her sexually because she is HIS wife. Like a form of property. Would you want to be in a relationship with someone this creepy and controlling?
In most prefectures in Japan, it is illegal for a person under 20 to get married without a parent’s (or witness’s) approval. Tsukasa is a 16-year-old girl who gets married to Nasa, who is 18. Although it is bizarre that they would get married without even knowing each other, it is more concerning that Tsukasa’s parents never approve of their marriage. In her own words, «If push comes to shove, you get a random passerby to vouch for you.» And that’s what she does, by getting her grandmother to sign it off-screen. Tsukasa’s illogical decision, and Nasa’s ambivalence to it, should strike any fully functioning person as bizarre. Everyone seems to have ignored that the show began with a massive plot contrivance. Their marriage is technically illegal. It would get annulled if they were exposed. Ther questionable marriage is never addressed by anyone, except for Tsukasa’s lunatic sister. Her sister is an annoying, raving lunatic. She stalks Tsukasa and shouts all the time. Whenever she was onscreen I immediately wanted to turn off the show. Still, she’s a frightening character because she is the only one to reject their questionable marriage, yet her concerns are not supposed to be taken seriously. She is only in the show to deflect potential criticism and provide comic relief by hysterically screaming. Hilarious.
On the plus side, Nasa and Tsukasa have no reason to argue because they both, or more accurately, Tsukasa, knows her place. He loves her because she does whatever he wants. She takes care of him like a mother. If you mistake her for a robot, I wouldn’t blame you. After all, that’s why Nasa loves her so much. He practically says so himself, «If you asked me what I love about you, Tsukasa, I’d have any number of answers. There’s the real way you pay attention to me. Which makes me happier than I can describe when you compliment me.» He’s the kind of guy who doesn’t want a mutual relationship; he needs a mother to baby him. I understand why you’d love someone because they love you; that’s how families work. But he is hilariously unaware of the fact that their relationship is one-sided. I swear sometimes watching them interact is like entering a portal to Feudist Japan. The saddest part is, I can’t even hate Tsukasa. I feel bad for her. She must be dead inside because anyone with half a brain would know this guy’s a creep.
Nasa is your typical Nice Guy archetype. Although calling him a guy would be overly generous. He is a child, both physically and mentally, and he just so happens to be married. Whenever he interacts with his wife, he blushes and stumbles over his words like a cringey middle schooler in love for the first time. Sometimes it’s nostalgic. Most of us had an awkward first love, but this guy is 18 and married, yet he has the maturity of a 12-year-old. Some people will find this cute; looking at the rating, I would say too many. This show appeals to people because it’s «wholesomeness,» but it’s like 4chan’s idea of wholesomeness. Maybe you’ll see value in this show that I didn’t, but if you noticed any of the flaws I mentioned, don’t watch it because it’ll make you cringe so hard you’ll want to die. Well folks, it has been a rough one. I dare say you’ve earned a song.
To the tune of Neil Young’s — «A Man Needs a Maid»
♫♫♫ Nasa’s life is changing in so many ways
He moved out of his home, and he doesn’t have a mom anymore
All he’s got is his loneliness these days
He’s looked for the perfect girl knocking on every door
He’s been thinking that all he needs is a maid
All he needs is a nice woman who’ll stay
Just someone to keep his house clean
Fix his meals and go away.
A maid
All Nasa needs is a maid ♫♫♫
Kenjirou Hata isn’t known for being a masterpiece storywriter. Most of his works often deal with romantic comedy elements and among them is Hayate the Combat Butler. Watching Tonikaku Kawaii gave me a similar impression at first when we meet Nasa Yuzaki, the main protagonist who gets involved in an accident. Is it fate when at that moment that he encounters his future wife, Tsukasa Tsukyomi? And that’s the funny idea about fate. When we talk about fate, it seems characters are destined to meet and one of the recurring tropes from the author’s previous work. Nasa and Tsukasa develop a relationship quickly as they get married in the very first episode. If you don’t believe me, just watch their union and signed registration. When you have two main protagonists get married from the very first episode, there’s bound to be endless questions popping into your head.
One of the first questions may be why these two would get married in the first place? Doesn’t marriage take time and commitment? They barely know each other but now are a married couple, a type of relationship that may last until death do them apart. From the very first few episodes, we can deduct that both main characters does have attraction towards each other. Nasa sees Tsukasa as a girl that you can only dream of even dating, let alone marrying. On the other hand, Tsukasa sees Nasa as a gentle soul with a selfless nature that truly values her well-being. However, the two are lack experience when it comes to actual romance. For instance, it took a lot of convincing for Tsukasa to tell Nasa to talk to her without being so formal. Tsukasa herself has trouble expressing her feelings and this usually translates into dozens of awkward moments between the duo. You could easily say that each episode is a test for the two lovebirds. Although over time, Nasa and Tsukasa learns a lot about each other and what it means to love.
As mentioned before, marriage is a commitment and a lifelong vow. To comprehend this idea, Tsukasa and Nasa had to arrange their life into a state where they can live comfortably. This includes securing a stable job, buying the right furniture, and making time to be with each other. It sounds a lot harder than it looks but realistically, almost any normal couple would have to go through this process. For Tsukasa and Nasa, some unfortunate circumstances drops them into a temporary home in later episodes. It’s one of those old sayings where when life knocks you down, you have to get back up. From a storytelling perspective, the duo faces the hardship of life and reality. The main storytelling theme focuses on their way of life and how they live each day to be what they committed to.
Despite some of the serious wordings of the plot elements, Tonikaku Kawaii is a fairly lighthearted show with tons of comedy and entertainment. You have to remember that the author wants us to experience a light rom-com, without too many tearjerking moments or despair. Indeed, this anime adaptation remains lighthearted that focuses on entertaining rather than a complex storytelling. With 12 episodes, the anime sets the bar for being what a rom-com should be although I emphasize that the ongoing manga is fairly long. In other words, this 1-cour adaptation serves more as a tool for viewers to get into the surface of the franchise. There’s a whole lot more down the rabbit hole. Otherwise, fans should be familiar with the overall tone of the comedy such as the character name gags (namely Nasa), misunderstandings, and other mischiefs.
With its small yet colorful cast of characters, the author also borrows similar character concepts from his previous work such as maids. Characters such as Kaname, Aurora, Charlotte are decorated with maid characteristics while Kaginoji Chitose serves the role of a jealous girl who gets the wrong impression about Nasa. No doubt, Chitose causes some unsettling drama between the couple and some episodes shows that she can be an annoying brat to deal with. Luckily, this is where we see Nasa at how he tackles the problem in his honest and sincere way. In many ways, Nasa is the ‘nice guy’ in their relationship but only that he doesn’t finish last. He’s first to be married to such a perfect housewife.
Studio Sevens Arcs may not be a powerhouse studio when it comes to animation but one thing is for certain, they managed to connect the dots in the right places for this adaptation. Tonikaku Kawaii’s visual style has a light touch with its character designs. It has a vibrant colorful art that retains the style of the manga look. Tsukasa in particular stands out as the poster girl and while other female characters are made with delicacy. Nasa himself also has a girly look despite being a male. This may or may not rub people’s impressions in the wrong way but for a rom-com, it suits them right. Plus, who can forget all those cartoony expressions.
It’s almost like a dream fantasy for Nasa, being able to find such a perfect girl like Tsukasa. Fate tied the knots together for these two characters and by no doubt, they retain a faithful relationship. Everyday is a challenge and every episode follows their steps of this married couple. If only the real world is perfect with all that buffet handholding.
Tonikaku Kawaii is a masterpiece, and for a romance fan I believe it hits all the right buttons.
The problem that usual romance anime have is that they usually focus on the «chase» part, and the whole hook is «Will they won’t they [get together]». As a result, we get a 1 cour anime with an ending that hopefully has them holding hands, and usually they’re not even getting together. («Go read the manga» ending)
There isn’t much of a story per se, but the anime focuses on the development of the relationship of our two main characters, with some comedy and minimal drama. It’s small dose of wholesomeness and happiness every week.
We’re mostly hoping to see more cute moments between them, and seeing how they slowly but surely get to know each other better.
I think that in the sound department they’ve also done pretty nicely. I love Akari Kito’s voice (voicing Tsukasa), and the OST in general, as well as the OP and the ED are quite nice.
If you’re also a fan of «meta» memes and references for Japan’s pop culture or for other anime, you’ll definitely see it here.
Overall, if you’re a romance fan and/or looking for some wholesome romcom, ToniKawa is definitely for you.
First, one thing I want to make clear is that if you don’t like simple romance with no drama, then you need to stay away from Tonikawa, because it’s definitely not for you. Anime like OreGairu will suit you better.
Another reason why I think it’s great, is because of how it keeps some question unanswered. And frankly, I don’t mind it, it’s only been season 1 and they have been successful to pique my interest in the story that if a season 2 ever drops, I’d gladly watch it, not just because of it’s wholesome romance aspect, but also because to find out where the plot is heading, because there’s clearly a plot and it’s definitely heading somewhere, as hinted by the mystery surrounding Tsukasa. The mystery keeps the overarching plot alive.
The plot is very simple, Nasa Yuzaki, our MC, falls in love at first sight with Tsukasa, our FMC. As Nasa tries to approach her, he gets hit by truck, only to be saved by Tsukasa’s swift movements. Nasa doesn’t miss the opportunity and forces himself to confess and ask her out. However, Tsukasa has one condition, they can only be together if he marries her! It may sound unrealistic, but nobody said it has to be realistic to enjoy the anime. The entire story is just Nasa and Tsukasa’s compilation of learning how to be a married couple.
Though, it might sound boring at first, it is far from it. This is where the wholesome part shines the most. Going to bedding shopping together, Nasa trying his best to make small living space comfortable for his new bride, Tsukasa showing Nasa how to make a proper meal, Nasa introducing Tsukasa to his parents, all of these small things are a big part of this show, and most possibly the best part. This is where the true beauty of the anime lies, simply having fun in your daily life, that’s what this anime is about, for most of it’s part. While some questions have been left as a mystery, such as Tsukasa’s past, all of it just compliments the plot while keeping the viewer’s attracted.
Now onto the characters, one of the best aspect of this anime! While Nasa might seem like a very childish MC, I mean who throws away their life for a girl they barely know about? But it’s no doubt how his love for Tsukasa is real. Though it may seem he loves Tsukasa just because she’s cute (As per the title of the anime, Tonikaku Kawaii) he actually does love everything about her, not just that she’s cute. During his speech with Chitose, he said the destiny is real and how he talked about his love to Tsukasa was just too heartwarming. Riemann Zeta Function is the very last thing I would expect to appear in an anime, using math to prove your love is also something I never expected from this anime. This just goes to say how he loves Tsukasa, a girl who he just met more than a person that you love and knew from a long time.
As much as Nasa loves Tsukasa, Tsukasa also loves everything about Nasa. When she was asked about what he likes about Nasa and how she blushes a little while saying that she like everything about him, it’s just really heartwarming. Tsukasa notices the littlest detail about Nasa and compliments him on it, and Nasa also loves when she compliments him, what can be more cute than this?
Other than Nasa and Tsukasa, all other characters are absolutely adorable! Kaname, Aya, Nasa’s parents, all these side characters, I just can’t get enough of these adorable set of casts! The character who was a teensy bit annoying was Chitose, she reminded me of those generic Tsundere characters, other than that I don’t hate her much. Also the voicing of each and every character is so amazing! I adore all the Seiyuus (Voice actors) working behind this anime.
About the artstyle, it’s adorable! I don’t know how anyone could not like it. The artstyle just compliments the setting and couldn’t be any better. The blush lines are kinda ridiculous, but I’d be lying to myself if I said that I didn’t find that cute.
The opening is just amazing, at first, I kind of didn’t like the idea of EDM in an anime opening, because most of the time it sounds generic, but Yunomi changed my mind. I’ve listened to Yunomi before this, and I was very surprised that this opening was from Yunomi. And I was even more surprised when I found out that it was Tsukasa’s Seiyuu who was singing the opening. Starting with a beautiful instrumental, when the EDM part started, it took me by surprise. Not only the opening, but the ending is beautiful beyond explanation. I have already listened to it an unhealthy amount of times, the piano’s involvement in the ending is really great. I’m listening to it as I’m writing this review! It’s really helpful and I’d suggest you listen to it while reading this as well, kinda gives a good feeling.
And now onto the most important part, enjoyment. If you read this review completely then you know that I’ve enjoyed this a lot. There aren’t many heartwarming anime like this, which is why this is so special to me. I remember making a thread months ago, asking for a romance anime with simple story, «I just want a romance anime where the boy and girl are simply in love with each other, and do relationship stuff together without any drama.» were my exact words, after I saw this anime, it felt like it was just made for me. I couldn’t be more happier, I enjoyed every second of this anime.
I see a lot of negative comments about this anime, most of them complain about the same thing, about how everything is too simple, how much of a fool can you be? With a little bit of research, anyone could’ve found out that it’s those simple SoL type of anime, if it wasn’t your thing then why watch it? Many people try to bring real life logic into it, like how it shouldn’t be possible for them to marry each other, blah blah blah. Oh please, this fiction, nowhere did it say that it’s based on real life laws. I also don’t get why people say that nothing happens in this anime, please don’t be ignorant.
All criticisms on this anime look very shallow, it’s what happens when you try too hard to find something bad about an anime. Although I don’t blame those people, even if I tried then I couldn’t truly find something about this anime that was absolutely terrible.
Fridays have been sweeter with this anime around. This anime impacted me in a way that Fridays will be a little empty without this, this is a huge success, and for that alone, this anime is more than deserving of a solid 9.
Rather than going through the usual points (as my reviews tend to be), I’d like you to conduct this very simple checklist:
— Wholesome, cutesy, adorable Rom-Com SoL happiness? Vanilla check.
— Romance right at the START instead of the END? Story plot check.
— Male MC not a clueless, spineless moron that thinks with his brain? Absolute check.
— Male MC is a man of Kazuma-level culture and boldness? DOUBLE check.
— Female MC not a violent tsundere bitch? Absolute check.
— Female MC smug face? DOUBLE check.
— Supporting cast isn’t annoying AF? Hilarious, yet serious check.
— Even the most annoying character (the blonde loli) is reasonably non-intrusive? Idealistic check.
— No filler characters: Everyone seems real instead of feeling like they are being put there just for the sake of the MCs alone? Realistic check.
— Great OST? Musically check.
— «Meta» memes and references of Japan’s pop culture and others? Extra check, if you’re eagle-eyed, that’s a plus. Good one on you.
— (Most importantly) Truck-kun unable to Isekai MC? TRIPLE Check.
If any of the points you see here checks out, then I’m sorry to say that this show is not for you.
And yes, to add the salt and rub some more wounds, Japan’s legal age for young marriages are truly a gleam of wonder, with males at 18 and females at 16 (and yeap, both Nasa and Tsukasa are legal of age!). Talk about moving past ALL the BS drama, troupes and cliches (NTR included) and dense «high school» relationships we’ve seen time and time again that gets old so quickly. What you see here, is what you get: a pure wholesome vanilla romance of a young boy and young girl, their marriage as fresh as their friendship-cum-relationship towards one another, exploring each other’s quirks and identifying what is good and bad while holding no grudges, and more importantly, going through the rite of passage together as one of (if not) the best husbando and waifu couple pairings of recent times.
Dr. Seuss even puts it best with this romantic quote: “You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep, because reality is finally better than your dreams.” BUT, with a cinch of comedy, as Mae West puts it: “Marriage is like trading in the adoration of many for the sarcasm of one.” WHEW, talk about idealistic (but realistic) gut-punching.
In a nutshell:
This is the marriage life of the Yuzakis’: Nasa and Tsukasa, who only coincidentally met each other on a winter’s night road, and within the span of the night, a marriage proposal is formed. and after 3 years of disappearance, the wishful thinking has come full circle. Day and night, this lovely and beautiful couple learns to understand each other’s likes and dislikes for character development, all while committing «lewd» acts time and time again to amaze-balls of «will they get on it, or not?» (even right in Nasa’s original home, such kind parents). Some backstories here and there that’ll question you about Tsukasa’s «immortality», but it’s just a small set-up for both the anime and the manga (for now).
Even with the supporting cast of the Arisugawa family of jokers: Kaname is a down-to-earth, but extremely fun and comical (best supporting) LIT younger sister; Aya being the complete airhead (of over 9000) of an older sister that has held her crush for the husbando (for far too long) and reverting into YouTubing after the damage is done; and not to mention, their loving-cum-merciless mother who always gives the cold, hard truths to the older sister with no remorse. Like mother, like (older) daughter.
Also, the questions about the frustrations of blonde-haired Chitose and her able maids Aurora and Charlotte: Chitose seems like the typical «annoying AF» character that is the only opposing factor to the Yuzakis’ marriage, but it sure takes a lot of convincing to get the mistress’s mind straight and recognize that regardless of her actions, there’s no stopping them both from divorce, and at the very least, she acknowledges that the marriage is here to stay. Both maid servants Charlotte and Aurora however, really punch in the «butt of the joke» towards the condescending naivete of the mistress, even Tsukasa (because she’s THAT easy to be fooled). Carry the humour back and forth, because it’s as hilarious as heck.
The only thing that worried me about this adaptation is the «Crunchyroll Originals» tagline, because shows under the series get a VERY BAD rap for subpar production quality (remember Gibiate from Summer 2020 and EX-ARM for Winter 2021?). Well, colour me surprised, because this is one of the better low-budget productions (besides Onyx Equinox) that was produced decently. The production team over at Seven Arcs did a fine job at adapting Hata Kenjirou’s work, and even in an interview where the creator himself said that «this work is left to good hands» under director Hiroshi Ikehara (mainly directing kids’ shows) and his team, I was SO relieved, and watching this for 3 months, it held on its own pretty nicely. A pretty good job, if I were to say so.
And the music, OOH. If that «historical-gone-total rap» feeling of an opening of Yunomi X Akari Kitou isn’t a banger, then I don’t know what is. While the ED is plentiful fine-ish, it does not get more important than getting the right VAs for both Nasa and Tsukasa. I know many have been asking for the old VAs of both main leads Hayate and Nagi (Ryouko Shiraishi and Rie Kugimiya) to reprise their roles, but what we got of the modern-day big favourites of both Junya Enoki (who’s also Jujutsu Kaisen’s main lead Yuuji) and Akari Kitou (who’s also Adachi to Shimamura’s main lead Adachi) are really good. Not quite the same nostalgia for die-hard Hayate fans, but definitely a worthy refresh for the times of now.
If you haven’t got the gist of what I’ve said so far, please go back to that checklist, because Tonikaku Kawaii is truly a masterpiece work of Hata Kenjirou’s calibre as a veteran mangaka that knows what he’s doing, and really moving hearts a plentiful with overflowing fluffiness. Fans of the Rom-Com genre should absolutely not swipe left against this show, because it is pure diabetes to your heart.
«Girls are this soft?! Human hands are this warm. and feel this good? This is marriage?! It’s fantastic!»
-Nasa Yuzaki
Ladies and gentlemen, the year is 2020, and ‘pandering to incels’ is still a viable business strategy. I’m not gonna make any friends for this one but. Tonikawa is real bad.
I do think Tonikawa is very self-aware of what it’s doing, but that’s not really a good thing when ‘what it’s doing’ is just reinforcing a bunch of uncomfortable and arguably harmful tropes that already plague the anime and manga industry. I still wouldn’t mind this so much if the show didn’t brutally reinforce the whole ‘perv and his paper doll’ thing every chance it gets, but 4 episodes in and there’s few signs of that stopping. There’s just. next to no other substance here, and any vaguely cute moments get completely overshadowed by the show bashing my brain in that Nasa wants some anime titty.
I will at least grant the production quality’s fine (if mostly unremarkable), and the opening is fairly catchy, so at least there’s that? Beyond that, the cheap comedy omnipresent is nothing remarkable, but can still get the occasional laugh. I also still want to feel something towards the romance, but Tonikawa can’t even create a deep conversation towards it so far.
Maybe it’ll catch me off guard and develop some maturity or depth later in the season, but as is I’m not really looking forward to the rest of this anime.
I don’t understand the praise for this.
Tonikaku tries to be different and yet it falls short. Actually, scratch that. It falls FAR from being any different from any rom-com that I’ve seen. It attempted to mix up the order of a cliche and yet it still is the cliche. The show doesn’t know what it wants to be itself and there is near to nothing redeemable about the show. I have plenty of reasons why, as well. Let’s dive in, shall we?
TL;DR at the bottom
On top of all of this, the show clearly wants to be different. The director was like, “You know what? Let’s just skip to the end and get them married”. This is an example of them wanting to drift away from a cliche. They switch up the beginning and the end in an attempt to “stand out”, because who cares about developing relationships when you can just conclude it in the first episode, right? But guess what? It still doesn’t stand out! Because everything sandwiched in the middle is just generic Slice-of-Life without a point except for introducing side characters or showing off their failed attempts to make it “cute”.
This Slice-of-Life is pretty mediocre, to say the least. It relies on “cute” faces and textbook awkward situations to tick off time, and the jokes they make aren’t that funny. Caught sniffing someone else’s clothes? Freaking out about a girl sleeping next to you? Really? I mean, I guess if you like small penis jokes and guys freaking out about a girl sleeping next to him, then this may be a bit enjoyable. And how many times does a show have to reference internet culture? It seriously got annoying after the second episode and afterward I wondered if I should drop this show or not. A girl saying to another girl that their skin is “like an iPhone X?”? And who else loves “game-streaming Youtubers?” I swear this script was made by someone who comes home after work from the studio for dinner and has to listen to his 11-year-old son blab on about internet things. Except this time, he is taking extremely loose notes. It’s mostly hit-or-miss humor except with the accuracy of a stormtrooper. They also leave many things open-ended, to the point where you can’t tell if they are serious or it was just a joke, and it was infuriating to watch and wait until they explain it again. Along with all of this, there is a random “mystery” element to it, as there is no explanation or clear backstory with Tsukasa. With that, they don’t give any further explanation why she is around and brushes off that element like it doesn’t exist. The main reason people seem to enjoy this show is because it is cute. However, I fail to find what is so cute about the same repeated jokes, Nasa acting like an awkward loser most of the time, and the side characters being absolute airheads. This is easily a 1.
Music is decent. The OP music is fairly interesting, as it has the vibe of Youtuber’s opening from 5 years ago, not that it’s a good or bad thing. There are also some notable VAs in this anime, like Akari Kitou, Konomi Kohara, and Sumire Uesaka. Each one of them has had their own big roles and their talent made this show a bit more tolerable. The music and sounds throughout the show, however, is a problem. It uses the wrong sounds at the wrong time. It fails to find the right emotion for the scene multiple times. This wrong use of sounds is recurring and can be unsettling. The soundtracks are catchy, so I’ll give this a 3.
The art in the background gives a tranquil feeling. Definitely one of the better things in the series. However, there are some backgrounds and color combos that look like they were made in Microsoft 3d builder. The character designs are also one of the worst things I’ve seen. I’m not sure how people believe that these designs are cute and all. It’s expected during the hard times currently, but I’ve seen hentais with better character design than this crap. Its oversaturated colors and creepy looking eyes with their simplistic face structure make it hard to look at the half-decent scenery that was before my eyes. I also hate the blushes on this anime. Everytime someone blushes in this anime, it is represented by a bunch of red lines lazily stroked across the face. This is neither aesthetic nor appealing, and it looks disgusting. 2.
Characters are another black spot in the series. We have Nasa, and he acts like a clueless 11 year old around Tsukasa, the girl he fawns over. He’s absolutely hopeless in his love life and it is cringeworthy to watch the moves he makes on Tsukasa. And his personality? A textbook hopeless loner nerd, except without the harem, but still perverted. This is somehow meant to be “relatable” to the audience. What else? Oh, he’s smart? And guess why? He’s named Nasa! He felt obliged to become smart because his name was Nasa, which happened to be the name of the American Space Agency. I’ve heard many stupid explanations from anime, but this takes the cake. So let’s say he actually gets his goal, studies hard, and becomes a billionaire. If I were to see a billionaire with a scientific discovery, I’d still be reminded if they have some weird name. Like Stephen Hawking, despite him making so many discoveries, in the end he’s known for being disabled. Another weird thing about this show is that even though they bother to add a smart personality, it is almost never projected throughout the show. I actually forgot about his “smart” personality 7 episodes in until I decided to look back at the first episode, which shows how subtle and unnecessary this trait was.
Now let’s look at Tsukasa, the most lazily written character. Her personality is quite questionable. She decides to save Nasa, a random guy at the moment, from getting hit by a truck and just survives. They don’t bother explaining why this happens until the very end. And like any other logical character, decides to marry this random person he saved 2 years later, because who cares about developing relationships when they can just skip to the end? There’s no effort put into developing her, either, as she still has no foreseeable characteristics or backstory. Oh yeah, let’s make her underage, too. She’s 16 while Nasa’s 18, and they’re getting married… Cute, right? I get that Japan has a low age of consent, but that itself is messed up on its own. The intention for her existence is to give the perfect girl that the audience can suck-up to. Nasa and Tsukasa’s relationship goes nowhere as well, as after they get married in the first episode. The episodes after consist of either introducing side characters, Nasa fantasizing things to do with Tsukasa and failing, or doing “fiance” things like picking out a wedding ring, introducing each other’s families, and kissing.
The side characters are unappealing as well, just whiny and annoying characters that provide random moments of fanservice. Let’s look into each of these side characters. First, we have Kaname. Kaname is Nasa’s friend and doesn’t make fun of his name. Awww, wholesome. Her entire existence, however, is to provide more fanservice to the audience, as she cleans Nasa’s bath while he’s still in the bath and makes fun of his penis. Her presence is an inconvenience and makes the show more uncomfortable. There’s her big sister, Aya, too. The reason for her existence is to have a random onee-chan feeling to the show. Now we have a textbook pervert and a textbook onee-chan. Really. The parents are pretty boring as well in their little appearance. If anything, they are a nuisance to the screen as they are constantly loud and worrying and I just can’t stand them.
Now we can look at Tsukasa’s side of characters. There’s Chitose, the generic imouto/tsundere. She is the wannabe conflict in an episode, but after that, she’s just a whiny grudge that I despise every time she appears on the screen. And of course, they had to inject more generic themes, with her wanting to marry Tsukasa as well, adding an unnecessary yuri relationship that doesn’t even go anywhere. Another piece to glue into this mess. The maids in this show are really just there to be clueless and don’t have any meaning to them. All in all the side characters are a mess and uninteresting and exist only for the point of making the audience uncomfortable.
Overall the characters are either annoying and have no sense to them or they exist for giving unnecessary fanservice. 1.
I wasn’t able to find enjoyment in this show. As stated before, it relies on awkward situations and fanservice to keep the audience engaged. The show doesn’t even know itself what it wants to be, as it switches between random moments of fanservice and wholesome moments. It’s hard to tell if they wanted Tonikaku to be cute or uncomfortable to watch. It made me uncomfortable how they run time off of the clock making sexual jokes or giving compilations of Nasa failing to develop the little relationship that he has. It relies on the exploitation of an otaku’s fantasy of a girl just coming up to their door and wanting to marry him, and him not being able to do anything with the relationship to entertain the audience. This is yet another 1.
Tonikaku tried hard to be different, but it couldn’t. It had no potential to be something and yet it tried to be something else. I suffered through Tonikaku. It’s a bad show that relied on random “cute” moments and unfunny situations in order to keep the audience engaged. Tonikaku truly wanted to be something, but in the end, it was a cliche mess. A cliche mess with uncomfortable characters, unbearable sounds, and eye-killing artstyle, and I’m glad it’s over.
:: This review is based on the first 4 episodes and has no major spoilers ::
Imagine you have your shit together in life, nothing can stop you. You have worked hard ever since you were a kid to make sure you’re successful. Until one day while walking back to your home, you see this beautiful girl, who just takes your breath away. You want to talk to her but get in an accident before you could. Thinking it is your last moments, you confess to her and she agrees to go out with you on one condition. You have to marry her.
7 out of 10 ::
The story is nothing special, but it doesn’t have to be. You will just fall in love with the pure innocence and wholesomeness this show provides. But, if it is an immaculate story building experience you crave, Tonikaku is not the anime for you.
8 out of 10 ::
Neither the art nor sound here are something to write home about. But it is not bad at all. All in all, it is more than a decent package.
8 out of 10 ::
The characters are just adorable. Especially Tsukasa. I did not anticipate how much of an impression she would leave on me as she did. Nasa is also quite funny. No complains on this regard.
9 out of 10 ::
This show was the shocker of the season for me. I had little hopes getting into it, but left with so much more. The journey till now has been divine. And I am looking forward to what’s in store for the future.
8 out of 10 ::
If slice of life is your cup of tea and you were doubtful whether you should give this show a shot or not? You should definitely go for it! It is not the best slice of life anime or anything, but it is still a barrel of laughs and wholesomeness.
This show is a generic Rom Com. so what?
With what seems to be a great anime adaptation, we can expect great things from this anime moving forward just like a Truck-Kun. With an all-you-can-eat lovefest, I have already fallen in love with an MC that understands that scams don’t matter if there is a cute girl involved. Our two happily married lovestruck protagonists are very different than your usual nice guy accidentally tripping face-first into a lewd position with tsundere girlfriend.
Characters
While we have a somewhat generic character lineup, doesn’t mean that my ability to love them will wither away. Since they haven’t made such a change and diversity to the characters it’s easier to relate to, simply because I’m so used to a generic ideology.
Our protagonist Nasa isn’t much different than your usual rom-com protagonist, he simply embodies us, the medium of people who watch others romance prosper through anime. Though this time, he is the lucky victim who us, the viewer, despises. Why do you ask? Simple. He has the love we will never have. Nasa, besides my every fiber of being hating this lucky kid, is a fun character that is not good enough for his wife.
On the other hand, Tsukasa, our beloved wife, helps us realize that the best girl doesn’t have to be obnoxious tsundere. No, it can be Tsukasa the all caring wife, true to her feelings, won’t hit you for a stupid reason and wears an apron(if you know what I mean). Tsukasa has a somewhat mysterious background that is being revealed slowly. This is great, it differentiates from the usual childhood friend ideology. Honestly, I love her, she brings a breath of fresh air and we must all inhale and exhale very. very. very slowly, for we might never see another gem like this for a while.
Though this anime has somewhat of a generic character lineup besides Tsukasa, it doesn’t affect the overall laughs and moments you will experience with this anime.
Animation and Art
I’m not going to lie, I perceive this animation and art average at best. With no differentiation to your typical rom-com, animation and art let me down. At humorous points of this anime, we would automatically without question switch over to chibi characters, and a production cost of animation and art would pummel. Specifically speaking, the art has no entertainment or visual value, it brings nothing new to the table and at times would seem that the only effort put into this would be at heartwarming scenes or scenes where they had to put in some effort. The animation was subpar; nothing terrible occurred in this department but the overall enjoyment through animation. The animation wasn’t fluid and had not given me the breath of fresh air I had longed for, especially when taking a new approach to this genre of anime.
Sound
The sound is great, especially the OP. The OP brings a new sound to the average and boring sound that we see now. Other than that, the sounds that bring our couple to life are smooth and natural. There are many great moments when the soundtrack shined, allowing me to appreciate this anime more than I originally had.
Enjoyment
This couple had countlessly kept me, without a doubt, smiling throughout each episode. With heartfelt and stupid humorous moments our two happily married couple outshines through all of the muddy and usual generic tropes of a rom-com. I love romcoms, I do, it always reminds me time and time again that I will never reach a tier of greatness this protagonist of this caliber attains. While this anime is essentially a generic rom-com, you will have fun that is not provided in a normal and used plotline of other romcoms.
Overall
This anime is a great watch, with a new take on this genre, it outshines many of the usual romance animes we have seen in a while. Give this anime a watch; it portrays a new view of romance that everyone should see. Give this anime a try, why do you ask yet again? This anime will make you question, where is my wife?

Alright, let us all hope and pray this anime turns out to be amazing, so we all can enjoy the love and joy we will never have!
This is the ultimate wish-fulfillment fantasy garbage. I can’t believe so many people have bought into this trash. This has got to be the cringiest most overrated series I’ve seen in a while.
I dont know, when you got two eccentric main characters getting together in the first episode, and little to no drama, it should make for a good slice-of-life romcom, right? Well.
Most people complain about wish-fulfillment fantasies, but this show is literally based on that whole idea. This show was made to be the ultimate wish-fulfillment with the «perfect wife» whose only pupose is to serve the main male character.
Characters: This is where the show sucks. Nasa is made to be this complete genius with zero common sense. I can see it being funny in another anime, but the problem is this show manages to make use of every romcom trope and do nothing interesting with the characters.
We got the loli childhood friend, the not-loli childhood friend, the lesbian tsundere vying for her step-sister’s affection, a trap maid who literally feels like he was added to the scenes as an afterthought, and that cheerful maid. And this is only episode 4. Jesus Christ.
The dialogue in this show is the absolute worst. When it’s generic, I guess it’s fine. But when it isn’t being generic, it’s being incredibly stupid and creepy. Who talks like that? Honestly.
Animation: It’s cheap and it looks bad. Washed out colors. This looks like it came out in 2011.
Overall: If you’re new to anime, this show is fine for you. It’s a shonen comedy, so if you’re a newcomer you might like it.
HOWEVER if you’re not new, this show is seriously unfunny. It goes for all the cheap jokes most common in a shonen romcom. This is how most romcoms are when they are shonen. Literally every joke has zero creativity or thought put into it. It’s generic as any other cheap anime.
Don’t watch this show.
I was going to review Rose of Versailles, but I decided to binge this somewhat polarizing series on a whim. Most of the reviews I’ve read are either super positive and in the 8-10 range or super negative in the 2-3 range. I personally came down somewhere in the middle. I don’t think this show is good by any means, but I also don’t think it’s offensively bad. It’s just frustrating because it had so much untapped potential.
What if there was a relatable anime about a young married couple and how they have to face the everyday problems of married life? There are many real life couples in their late 20s and early 30s who grew up with anime and who would really enjoy a show like that! Since there isn’t a single anime that’s like that, it would be a wide open market! That’s an amazing idea! How could they possibly screw this up?!
They screw it up directly out of the starting gate. The premise is actually one of the dumbest I’ve ever come across in anime. I’ve been watching anime since 1998, so I’ve seen some DUMB anime in my time. I do not make this statement lightly. Our hero is named NASA after the space institute because his parents are quirky and weird. He was so embarrassed by his name that he vowed to study until he became a genius and was the greatest student in Japan. Then nobody could make fun of him. That is one dumb motivation! One day, he’s walking to school and sees a cute girl. He decides to rush across the street like a moron and get plowed by Truck-kun. Fortunately, this doesn’t become an isekai. Instead, his life is saved by the cute girl. She starts to walk away, but he chases after her on 2 broken legs and with severe blood loss and head trauma to ask her on a date. She says she’s not interested in dating and will only be with him if he agrees to marry her then and there. He agrees, but she disappears.
Nasa then does what anyone would do. He drops out of high school and wastes his natural genius by becoming a delivery boy. This is all in the hopes of somehow finding that girl he met one time when he was badly injured and suffering brain trauma. She shows up 2 years later out of the blue with a marriage certificate and they get married at midnight. Their marriage is illegal under Japanese law since he’s 18 and she’s only 16, but the series never actually brings this up! It would technically be legal in some provinces with parental consent, but they pay some random homeless person to be their witness and the parents never consent!
So the premise is stupid. So what? It’s the execution that matters. Surely these 2 have great chemistry and are an adorable couple right? Nope! Almost every scene of them together was awkward and cringe inducing rather than warm and wholesome. Firstly, they have very little chemistry together and don’t play off each other at all. Nasa is an awkward, geeky virgin whose only real trait is that he’s a genius when the show remembers that he is. However, Nasa still has FAR more of a personality and character than Tsukasa. She’s meant to be a blushing, Yamato nadeshiko but the show takes that to an extreme. She loves to cook, clean, compliment her husbando, and rarely ever speaks accept when spoken to. This makes her extremely boring. With a good anime couple, the guy will say something, then the girl has a witty retort, then the guy responds back in a playful way, and it’s like a ping pong ball being lobbed back and forth. In Over the Moon, Nasa will engage in a long inner monologue about how cute his wife is and how maybe someday they might actually hold hands. Then he awkwardly asks to hold her hand. She then blushes and lets him do it. They never go back and forth exchanging more than 4 sentences! To the show’s credit there is one scene where it reveals she loves trashy movies and forces Nasa to buy her a TV so she can watch Sharknado! Sadly, that’s probably the best character development she gets in the entire show!
I’ve read some bad fanfiction. I’ve attempted to write mushy, romantic fanfiction. The dialogue in Over the Moon is BAD even by fanfic standards. Half of Nasa’s dialogue is just «I can’t believe girls are soft! I can’t believe her hand is warm! I can’t believe girls breathe when they sleep! I can’t believe her hair smells nice!» In episode 2 he asks if he can touch her body and she replies, «From now on, my body is an all you can grab buffet!». That’s Sci-fi original movie level dialogue. That’s reaching Tommy Wiseau levels of stilted and unnatural.
I know they can’t show too much because she’s 16 for some reason, but I would expect an anime about a young married couple to deal with physical intimacy. Instead, they act like 2 middle school kids going on their first date. I know I’m not the first review to say that, but it’s so true! After 3 months, she’s sleeping on the floor because both of them are too afraid of sleeping in the same bed! After 2 months of being married, they act like holding hands is some SUPER kinky, forbidden shit. I told my girlfriend this show was written by an Amish otaku whose entire knowledge of relationships is based off a single volume of Love Hina that he secretly bought at Walmart. At one point, Nasa comes home from work and catches her changing skirts in the bathroom. She still has her panties on, but they both freak out. She then apologizes for changing clothes in her own house because she should have known he would be coming home around that time. Also she was in the bathroom, not changing right behind the front door or anything! Trad Waifu’s puritan power is hitting levels that shouldn’t even be possible! When I was in college, I had a project partner from Saudi Arabia who lived with his wife from a traditional, arranged marriage. I could never imagine her apologizing for changing clothes in her own bathroom. No human being would ever do that!

TONIKAWA Anime
TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You

Date aired: 2020-10-03 to 2020-12-19
Nasa Yuzaki is determined to leave his name in the history books. Ranking first in the national mock exam and aiming for a distinguished high school, he is certain that he has his whole life mapped out. However, fate is a fickle mistress. On his way home one snowy evening, Nasa’s eyes fall upon a peerless beauty across the street. Bewitched, Nasa tries to approach her—only to get blindsided by an oncoming truck. Thankfully, his life is spared due to the girl’s swift action. Bleeding by the side of an ambulance, he watches as the girl walks away under the moonlight—reminiscent of Princess Kaguya leaving for the moon. Refusing to let this chance meeting end, he forces his crippled body to chase after her and asks her out. Surprised by his foolhardiness and pure resolve, the girl accepts his confession under a single condition: they can only be together if he marries her!

Reviews
This OVA is branded as Episode 13, so you know immediately that it still retains the charm of the main series.
All that you’ve expected of the TV anime is brought back here with the OVA: the same charm and allureness of Nasa and Tsukasa’s sweet, sweet relationship, donned with the blushes, kisses, and the others’ interference that doesn’t detract from the fun.
A nice OVA to have, and for any hardcore fan of Tonikaku Kawaii, this OVA will reignite your love for the main series. Now go read the finished manga!
V4Watcher here to bring you the review, as precise and concise as possible. This review will talk about the whole series, including the last episode, which was an extremely fulfilling conclusion to an anime with a very unique concept.
One fine day, my friend was like ‘Bruh, there’s this anime where they instantly agree to get married. You gotta watch it.’ I was a bit hesitant to watch it at first, but after reading the summary, I was like ‘Yes. I NEED to watch this.’
There are many hints that Tsukasa is not actually human, which was a fun thing to search for while watching the anime. She sustained injuries from Truck kun but was able to walk freely, and one time she even said something anong the lines «You humans get diseases easily.’ (The episode where Nasa had a cold I think? Don’t remember too well.)
The OP and ED is catchy, and when I heard it during this OVA, it brought back fond memories of me watching the series.
Now that we’ve been reminded of the main story, let’s get back to the concluding episode. One thing I loved is that they made this episode comedic and not just filled with parting and saddness. Usually animes fill the last episodes with saddness and farewells, but this was different. It showed the start of a new life for Nasa and Tsukasa.
For half the episode, we looked at lonely Tsukasa, and for the other half a very embarassed Nasa and Tsukasa. The fact that they could make something like this actually hilarious and engaging to watch is really something.
Overall, this final episode had good pacing, a small though solid plot, and humour showing it’s face in all the right places. While it may not be the best anime you would’ve ever seen and blow your brains out, it is a short and engaging journey of a person coming to terms with married life, unfurled to us with humorous events and consistent pacing, along with a tinge of mystery surrounding it. Extremely wholesome. All in all, if I had to describe this anime in a few words. I would say it’s
