Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge is the second studio album released by American alternative rock band My Chemical Romance. The album was released on June 8, 2004 and was the band’s first album released with Reprise Records. Many would also argue it was the band’s first major album, as Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge was higher quality and gave them a larger fan base than I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, their first album.

Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge features some of My Chemical Romance’s most famous and iconic songs of all time, such as «I’m Not Okay (I Promise),» «Thank You For The Venom,» and «Helena.»

The album art was designed by lead singer Gerard Way and is entitled Demolition Lovers II.

Хочется заметить, что я не являюсь любителем эмо, поэтому некоторая предвзятость в моем обзоре будет присутствовать..

Что же касается музыки, то она, как ни странно, не грузит, а наполняет особой энергией — не мажорной энергией поп панка, а злой, мрачной энергией, которая, тем не менее, придает не меньше сил, чем самая драйвовая песня Allister.

Чем больше я слушал пластинку, тем тверже утверждался в мнении, что все-таки панка (настоящего зубодробящего, злого панка) тут гораздо больше чем эмо. Квинтету удалось очень качественно совместить в альбоме панковский драйв и эмоциональность эмо.
О каждой песни в отдельности говорить не хочется: они все довольно похожи и в то же время в каждой есть что-то свое особенное, такое, что в целом делает альбом по особому гармоничным и целостным.

К концу прослушивания сабжа от моего предвзятого отношения к этой группе не осталось и следа. Могу смело сказать, что My Chemical Romance покорила меня.

Вот ща заглянул в тему и понял, что в стилях я тут полную херню написал.

Что-то у нас обсуждение любой пластинки почему-то переходит в обливание грязью друг друга, высказыванию каких-то тупых дивизов и пр. Мы ж, вроде бы, музыку обсуждаем, а не друг друга!
По поводу MHR могу сказать следующее: группа классная, и альбом-то классный.

Лучший их альбомчик. Лично для меня мега хит I’m not Ok.

Surprisingly, MCR not only picks out the catchiest singles, but also veritably the best songs on the album to release. There is of course I�m Not Okay (I Promise), an entirely too annoying trip through unrequited love. Like much of the album here, no member is truly unique; the riffs are bland, the lead guitar lines are uninspired, the bass is essentially useless, and the drums just kind of keep time. However, Gerard does have a unique voice, and in conjunction with a group effort, keep the song slightly fresh. Helena opens up the album, and with good reason, as it is easily the best song on the C.D. Unlike much of the album, it�s fast paced and actually feels edgy, with Ray Toro�s backing wails giving the song a sense of actual anguish missing from the rest of the album. The final single of any real note is The Ghost of You, which is probably the best song after Helena. Ditching the pop-core roots, they opt to go for an epic feel, and its in fact ruined only by the fact Way is far too whiney to pull it off. It builds to be the best song on the album, but when your lead singer wails �At the top of my lungs/in my arms she dies� and sounds like he�s talking about his Echidna, there�s going to be a shortage of awe-inspiration.

What brings the rest of the album down is the general monotony the band gives off. The riffs are generally uninspired, and either sound like something Three Days Grace would be using for their next minor hit or a cutting room floor Thursday castaway. When they attempt to do anything particularly intelligent or interesting, its dampened by the fact they seem to want to keep the album safe, and tone down any solo�s or impressive chord progressions the guitarists attempt to develop. It�s not they don�t have talent, as they do show they�re fairly skilled, they just don�t seem to want to play, and when they do let loose, it�s often them trying to craft something that�s just beyond their reach.

However much the guitarists may be mediocre, the rhythm section is in general even poorer. As a general rule, the bass on this album is either inaudible or follows the guitars note for note, never trying to establish its own identity, or even make itself known. It�s an unfortunate occurrence, as the drummer actually shows plenty of skill during the course of the album. A definite highlight is the closer, I Never Told You What I Do For A Living, where he is the only thing keeping the rather disjointed track together. While he is rarely given any chance to really show off, Bryer does have the potential to at least be a solid drummer, and while he may not be the most talented member of the group, he at least knows his limits.

The key to MCR�s success is and always will be Gerard Way. Joining in on the risings ranks of high pitched singers to be making their way these days, he combines the impossibly high tone of Claudio Sanchez with the whiney nature of Adam Lazzara, and is something of a darker Patrick Stump. While his voice live may be a different story, he sounds extremely strong on the album, and is in fact the shining point, despite many detractors who point to the complete opposite. Instead of trying to be the focus of the song, he instead tries to build upon whatever sound they�re trying to create. For example, on the rather echo-y This Jetset Life Is Gonna Kill You, he applies the same effect on his voice, and melds into the song. The melding creates a rather unique touch, and if MCR were to pull it off so well on a consistent basis, this would be quite the band indeed.

The thing is, you have to take the album for what it is. It�s slightly dark, slightly violent, slightly weird pop punk, that tries to be unique, but is generic all the same. It�s incredibly repetitive despite the variety, incredibly boring despite the eclectic ness, and altogether an album that almost could have been a triumph. It�s strange to look at this compared to their previous effort; in keeping with the language I�m using, it�s at once far superior, yet less fulfilling than I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought My Your Love. When My Chemical Romance shows promise, it�s a rather entertaining and grand experience, but when they devolve into clich�s of the genre and even of themselves, you can�t help but get that taste out.

Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge (в переводе с англ. — «Троекратное ура сладкой мести», обычно название альбома сокращают на «Revenge» или «Three Cheers») — второй студийный альбом американской рок-группы из Нью-Джерси My Chemical Romance, выпущенный 8 июня 2004 года на лейбле Reprise Records. Альбом стал успешным для группы и для лейбла. Журнал Metal Hammer включил Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge в 20 лучших рок-альбомов 2004 года. Журнал Rolling Stone включил альбом в список «40 величайших эмо-альбомов всех времён» (позиция № 10). Пластинка получила платину в нескольких странах, а вышедшие синглы часто попадали в чарты и получали различные награды.

CRITIC REVIEWS

The beauty in Three Cheers lies in that mutability: It took the quotidian drama of suburban kids and blew it up into a life-or-death soap opera. Instead of digging its heels further into the pressures of adolescence, the album attempted to transcend them; in a world of Judy Blumes, it read like Stephen King.

There’s no question of Reprise’s high hopes for My Chemical Romance and Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge. But its accessibility pays tribute to anger and bullet holes in black leather.

Though TCFSR doesn’t quite set MCR apart from today’s screamo crop (it sits rather comfortably between releases from AFI and Avenged Sevenfold), it’s nevertheless a fine, thrilling mix of sounds and ideas from a band with the potential to go deep and far.

Sweet Revenge has the same shout-along choruses, speedy drums and horror themes that fueled Glenn Danzig’s old outfit, but it also adds cool metal licks and a sneaky sense of humor.

This thing is 15 years old and I must give it a hug for getting me into hard rock. It’s still one of my, if not my favorite in that genre.

Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge is such a heavy, emotional rush that’s super addicting. Every track is a banger, with the closing track resonating especially well.

The story of Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge: the album that changed My Chemical Romance’s lives and the face of modern music forever…

No-one saw it coming. Not even in their wildest dreams could My Chemical Romance themselves have imagined just how much they were about to change the world. But change the world they would, and it all started in the summer of 2004, thanks to the catalyst spark set off by their second album and major label debut, Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge.

Rewind just a few months, to March 13 and the band’s first in-depth profile piece in Kerrang! issue 996. Welcoming us into the Way family home in their native New Jersey, the My Chemical Romance we encountered then weren’t anything like the swaggering emo scene behemoths they would swiftly become across the next 12 months. Cutting a far more gawky collective figure, they were accompanied by endearing photos of frontman Gerard and his bass-playing brother Mikey, posing with their mum Donna Lee Way as she sat at the family’s heirloom piano wearing the band’s latest merch. Anyone seriously backing this gaggle of provincial goth kooks as the next big thing would have surely been considered certifiable.

And yet, deep in the heart of Sopranos-country, where guitarist Ray Toro claimed to have witnessed people overdosing on the streets on a regular basis, something very special indeed was stirring. They took us on a tour of their old haunts, including The Loop Bar in Passaic Park, where Gerard used to get wasted most nights. That is, once he’d emerged from endless hours spent in the cocoon of his mum’s basement, drawing the Dada-ist comic series The Breakfast Monkey – something he’d hoped to franchise to the Cartoon Network as a means of maybe one day escaping the crushing grimness of the neighbourhood’s live-for-the-weekend mentality. All five members – completed by guitarist Frank Iero and then-drummer Matt ‘Otter’ Pelissier – were until recently still living at home with parents. Little did they know then that what they were sitting on was a set of songs that would soon make them superstars, and an album that would eventually sell in excess of three million copies across the globe.

It was supposed to go another way entirely. Billed as a semi-conceptual sequel to the tale of the Demolition Lovers, first introduced on the band’s 2002 debut full-length I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge set out on a mission to tell “the story of a man. A woman. And the corpses of a thousand evil men…”, as detailed in the album’s liner notes. But throughout the course of its creative journey, a much more personal exorcism would occur, making for a record hewn from the darkest corners of grief, pain and self-flagellation – a collection of songs ‘made from the sharpest things’ (Give ’Em Hell Kid). Fresh after celebrating their recent signing to Reprise Records, following the modest ripple of success caused by their debut, in November 2003 Gerard and Mikey’s maternal grandmother Elena Lee Rush died. Engulfed in a cloud of mourning for the passing of a lady who not only taught him how to sing and paint as a child but also bought the band their first touring van, Gerard poured his emotions into the lyrics he was writing, particularly on the album’s opening track, Helena, named in her honour.

“It’s a really angry open letter to myself,” he explained of its sentiment, as part of the band’s first appearance on the cover of Kerrang! a few months later. ”It’s about why I wasn’t around for this woman who was so special to me, why I wasn’t there for the last year of her life. Self-hate is always a big part of the lyrics. I don’t know why, but I’ve always hated myself. Hopefully that self-hate is growing into something else now; hopefully it’s grown into caring about myself and wanting to stay alive.”

Until then, death had circled around the band as a kind of caricatured plot device; as something that suited their image as sullen sorts drawn to the mystique of the darker edges of human experience, rather than something tangible. In lighter exchanges with Kerrang! pre-dating Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge’s release, the frontman goofily talked about playing with ouija boards, and about his misspent youth getting drunk in cemeteries. Suddenly, however, death was all too real. It was then he decided to get sober – a period he describes as one of the most difficult of his life. But something inside was telling him this was the band’s shot at the big time – that there may not be another. “When I quit drinking I could see myself clearly, and I wasn’t sure how much I liked it,” he reflected. It wasn’t just Gerard who could sense something extraordinary was afoot, either. Producer Howard Benson had an inkling that this was a band unlike many others – particularly when it came to the presence, talent and charisma of their creative fulcrum. “I always look for a star in a band,” he told Kerrang!, “and Gerard was certainly that.”

“We all felt like outcasts,” Gerard explained of the thematic spine bonding the record’s ideas. “That’s what brought us together. We thrive on conflict, opposition… everything. I’ve always felt like that. At first it was us versus New York City. Then it felt like the band vs. America. Now it’s us vs. the world.

“This record is revenge for us,” he added, “on all the people that said we would never succeed. We thought we could get even for all the shit that’s happened to us in our lives. Revenge that could mean we could break out. Most of all, revenge on all the people who never believed in us. It led to this extreme confidence, where I felt like nothing could touch us. Nothing anyone said could hurt me when I was in this band.”

That sense of vengeance and violence is felt no more sharply than on the band’s trailblazing lead single, I’m Not Okay (I Promise). It was the last song penned for Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge, finding Gerard writing about his high school experiences for the first time. “I just wanted somebody to love me [back then],” he confessed, self-deprecatingly. Thanks to the now-iconic Marc Webb-directed music video (actually the second one made, following a more standard, live footage montage version for its initial release) the song, and by extension the band, became an outlet for a generation of music fans who could relate to its simple sentiments of defiance and emotional honesty.

At the start of 2005, My Chemical Romance were the main support act when fellow emo torchbearers Taking Back Sunday played Brixton Academy in London. By the end of that year, they would sell out two nights as headliners themselves, following a summer in which Gerard Way needed a personal bodyguard to protect him throughout a legendary trek around the U.S. on Warped Tour. As the momentum of the album’s subsequent singles Thank You For The Venom, Helena and The Ghost Of You catapulted them on to magazine covers and ubiquitous radio and music television airtime, My Chemical Romance became a bona fide phenomenon. Their shows were marked by a fervour seen maybe once in a generation, with fans copying the dark make-up, striped attire and straightened locks of their idols onstage. They were nominated in four separate categories at the 2005 Kerrang! Awards, scooping the big prize for Best Album – defeating the might of Green Day’s American Idiot, no less. This was a cultural awakening on an unprecedented scale, and it was fuelled by the fans.

Yet even in the midst of that success, the task ahead still felt gargantuan.

“We could sell a million records and still feel like the underdogs,” the singer asserted.

2006’s follow-up album, The Black Parade, would of course make Three Cheers… look almost small fry by comparison. Arenas would be filled. Festivals would be headlined. Tabloids would go to war on the band. And the world would feel a damn sight emptier in their absence, following the eventual 2013 decision to call time on things.

None of that would have been possible, however, but for the spirit, style, and self-belief of the band’s era-defining second album. That feels like something worth cheering about.
