Вторая перемена, на которую сложно не обратить внимание, это совершенно неизвестные люди, взятые на студийную работу (по крайней мере, неизвестные мне). Нет больше гениального Флуда, сводившего полсотни великолепных альбомов самых прославленных групп последних 35 лет, и помогавший Depeche Mode с Violator, SoFaD и Delta Machine. Нет Эмили Лазарь, потрясающе качественно выполнившей мастеринг Playing the Angel, нет Тони Хоффера, вытянувшего достаточно сложное сведение Sounds of the Universe. Теперь группа работает с ничем себя незарекомендовавшими людьми, вращающимися вокруг студийной работы.

3. «The Worst Crime«. Если честно, при первом прослушивании, я на этой песне решила, что альбом полностью удался. Это нереально крутая песня. Я даже остановилась на ней, и раз 5 подряд переслушала. Просто изумительно, приятно напоминает Roads группы Portishead, в припевах конец такта подчеркивается чеканящими рэйками. И текст великолепный, по крайней мере мне он очень близок, живя в современной инкарнации поздней римской империи, понимая что её судьба во всех красках детально повторится в ближайшее время, видя гигантское количество совершенных ошибок, ни от одной из которых мне никого не удалось уберечь и предостеречь, я тоже чувствую некоторую ответственность перед этим маховиком истории, поэтому текст The Worst Crime мне очень импонирует и невероятно близок. 4. «Scum«. Не знаю, со скольки раз я всё таки расслушала эту песню. Где-то на 4-5 прослушивании. Кстати, эта песня была на презентации, где полгода назад представили 3 отрывка. Хоть поначалу я и сопротивлялась, но сейчас признаю что это всё-таки хороший трек, строчка «pull the trigger» делает всю песню.

5. «You Move«. Вроде как надо порадоваться, что Мартин и Дейв впервые в истории группы что-то записали вместе, но это такая ерунда, что даже сбитый размер не спасает. Да и ничто не способно спасти песню, если за ней не стоит никакая оригинальная идея.

6. «Cover Me«. Итак, мы добрались до песен Дэйва Гаана. Их, как всегда, три штуки. Cover Me хоть звучит странновато, не очень уж в стиле Depeche Mode, но песня мягкая, лиричная и приятная, да и к середине разбавляется синтезаторами, приближаясь к классическому звучанию Depeche Mode.

9. «So Much Love«. Больше всего не люблю такие песни у Depeche Mode, банальная долбёжка шестнадцатыми, почти на каждом позднем альбоме у них есть такое нечто.

10. «Poorman«. Ниже среднего, если бы не яркая гитара, наигрывающая простенький рисунок, то и сказать бы было совсем нечего об этой песне. Хотя, так и так, едва ли вы заметите эту песню, даже на 3-5 прослушивании. Пролетает мимо ушей, как будто её и нет.

11. «No More (This Is The Last Time)«. Третий трек Гаана, и самый рядовой из всех его композиций на альбоме Spirit. Песня неплохая, обычный средний наполнитель, если бы речь была, скажем, об альбоме Delta Machine. Но на Spirit вторая половина испытывает явную нехватку хорошего материала, поэтому 11-ый номер воспринимается приятно.

Надо сказать что за прошедшие 12 лет у меня сильно изменилось отношение в Гаану. Когда я в 2005-ом году узнала что теперь он тоже композитор, я подумала «нахрен он тут нужен, Гор и сам отлично справляется!«, в 2009-ом «ну ладно, на кое-что он все таки годится«, в 2013-ом «а Дэйв всё-таки молодец, целый хит Should Be Higher на себе вытянул«, в 2017-ом я уже понимаю что если бы не песни Гаана, то альбом однозначно можно было бы внести в список самых провальных записей года. О, нет, не записывайте меня в отряд ворчунов, ноющих что после SoFaD Depeche Mode сдулись. И в секту считающих последним хорошим альбомом Ultra тоже не стоит меня вносить. Мне нравятся поздние DM, и даже после Spirit я не считаю группу сдувшейся. Просто Spirit это самый неудачный альбом в дискографии коллектива. Ничего страшного, со всеми бывает, думаю, что если с группой будет всё в порядке, они смогут реабилитироваться в 2021-ом году.

New Studio Album Spirit Available Globally on March 17th on Columbia Records

“Where’s The Revolution” is the first new music from the band in four years and the first offering from their upcoming album, Spirit. Available now for preorder, Spirit will be released digitally and physically worldwide as a standard 12 track album on March 17th on Columbia Records. The band will also release a 2-CD Deluxe version of the album featuring a special 28-page booklet of exclusive artwork and photos, along with 5 remixes created by Depeche Mode, Matrixxman and Kurt Uenala, collectively entitled the ‘Jungle Spirit Mixes’. The vinyl version of Spirit will be released on two 180 gram LPs, featuring the standard album and a special SPIRIT etching on the 4th side. All artwork and photographs accompanying the album are by Depeche Mode’s longtime creative collaborator and renowned filmmaker Anton Corbijn.

Spirit marks the band’s first collaboration with producer James Ford of Simian Mobile Disco (Foals, Florence & The Machine, Arctic Monkeys) and serves as the follow up to the band’s blockbuster 2013 album Delta Machine which debuted at #1 in 12 countries. Says Gahan of the release, “We are exceptionally proud of Spirit, and we look forward to sharing it with everyone. With James Ford and the rest of the production team, we’ve made an album that I believe is truly powerful, both in its sound and its message.”

If you haven’t noticed, this is two albums. One which is depressing, political and preachy written by Gore, the other is brilliant, If you haven’t noticed, this is two albums. Something about this album just felt disjointed on first listen. It all became clear when I looked up who the songs were written by. I liked every song written by Gahan and none written by depressing Gore.

Cheat sheet: Cover Me, Poison Heart and No More are all excellent songs and all happen to be written by Dave Gahan. Gore’s self righteous songs Poor Man, Fail, Scum, The Worst Crime and Going Backwards leaves me feeling lousey and hopeless. Not something I want to listen to 50 times. I get it Marty, you are watching the news way, way, way too much.

Diehard DM fans will defend this album «just because» and liberal critics will praise the album for the lyrics alone. What’s funny is I don’t necessarily disagree with what he writes, I just don’t want to hear it when I am listening to the music I love. I think it’s time for Dave to go solo again. Besides «Kingdom» and «Love Will Leave You (Cap10 Kirk Remix) are way up there with any of the DM greats. Hear me Dave? … Expand

17-го марта вышел альбом “Spirit” знаменитых британских электро-рокеров, к которому так не хочется, но придется приписать «очередной». Разбираемся, почему в этот раз революции не получилось.

К новому творению Depeche Mode мир за окном подошел в плачевном состоянии. Мы с вами живем в эпоху дряхлых, бесконечно возвращающихся будулаев, сиквелов и триквелов. Враги мирятся, конкуренты объединяются, нарушаются все возможные зароки «никогда больше не исполнять этот хит». Все те, кто не умер в 27, по-прежнему с нами, играют шоу до последнего шага, вдоха, сердцебиения. Отчасти об этом, например, новый фильм Дэнни Бойла «T2»: куда ни беги, хоть в Амстердам, хоть лучший мир по беговой дорожке, – все равно прибегаешь в собственную юность, где тебя ждут изъеденные временем друзья и старые кайфы.

В полной мере все это применимо к Мартину Гору, Дэйву Гаану и Энди Флетчеру, которые вот уже лет 15 как пытаются закрасить седину, откинуть в дальний угол костыли и из перьев и палок воспроизвести героиновый шик “Songs of Faith and Devotion”. Собственно, об этом они и поют в первой же песне альбома по названием «Дух»: «Вооружившись новыми технологиями, мы идем назад, не чувствуя ничего внутри». В устах любой другой группы такого рода откровения могли бы основательно шокировать и разочаровать поклонников. Однако основной автор Depeche Mode Гор уже не раз заставлял Гаана петь провокационные вещи: его устами он признавался в грехах в диапазоне от алкоголизма до педофилии, неизменно сжимая в кармане артистическую фигу. Поэтому уж кому-кому, а «депешам» давно уже можно абсолютно все. Но давайте по порядку.

В XXI веке крейсерская скорость титанического круизного лайнера под названием Depeche Mode – альбом раз в четыре года. Через раз поп-альбомы чередуются со скрежетом зубовным: “Exciter” и “Sounds of the Universe” напополам состояли из стадионных гимнов и гулких электронных госпелов; на “Playing the Angel” 2005-го года и последнем на данный момент “Delta Machine” слабеющий с годами вокал Гаана с трудом пробивался сквозь лязг цепей и грязные гитары.

На “Delta Machine” пожалуй, стоит остановиться отдельно. Одним только названием (DM!) дав понять, что альбом должен показать все ягоды, оставшиеся в ягодицах, группа тогда выкрутила все ручки вправо и жахнула самый антихитовый и злобный материал в своей истории. К некоторым песням будто бы приложил руку Трент Резнор, так недружелюбно они звучали, иные копировали главные кунштюки прошлых релизов, вроде мощных блюзовых риффов и оглушительных распевок. “Delta Machine” не дотягивал до уровня “Ultra” по качеству материала, но плавящиеся колонки и кислотные лупы давали надежду – ведь многие группы, десятилетиями собираясь с мыслями, выдавали-таки на излете свои лучшие работы. Во всяком случае, для фанатов он точно стал подтверждением: холодные, громкие, свои. Живые.

В противовес громогласному предшественнику “Spirit” создан в большей степени по вышеупомянутому «канону». Под некрасивой обложкой (конечно, авторства того же Корбайна) скрывается короткий, по правилам увертюры более тихий и танцевальный (примерно как дискотека в соседней квартире) альбом. Начало «Духа» довольно оптимистично: шестиминутная “Going Backwards”, которой наверняка будут открывать и концерты, способна раскачать стадионы. Первый сингл “Where’s the Revolution” тоже поддаст жару на живых выступлениях, хотя его и придется вытягивать за счет мощного видео-ряда с красными флагами – впрочем, с этим проблем у DM никогда не было. Пропускаем откровенно нудный вальсок “The Worst Crime”, и перед нами умеренно неожиданная и умеренно злобная кричалка “Scum”, что-то вроде “Wrong 2.0”. А вот дальше начинается, говоря словами классика, «отрыв от народа и падение».

Первая (!) за всю историю группы песня, совместно написанная Гором и Гааном “You Move” оборачивается до обидного вторичным мутант-диско в стиле «старые дядьки играют в злых и развратных гангстеров». “Eternal” (как и “Fail”) – обязательные патетичные камлания Гора, которые, кажется, даже поклонники скорее терпят, нежели наслаждаются. Роль «движушного боевика с гитаркой» выполняет “So Much Love”, впрочем, и она настолько вторична, что даже отчаянно ретроградные альбомы Гора последних лет “MG” и “Ssss” (выпущенный совместно с беглецом Винсом Кларком) звучат более дерзко и свежо.

По традиции, неизменно соблюдаемой уже 12 лет, три песни отданы на сочинительский откуп Гаану. Как и на прошлых альбомах, эта рента, ставшая единственной гарантией того, что Дэйв не покинет коллектив, оборачивается жиденькой по звуку и букве DM-lite философией. Интересно, что на “Spirit” Гаан подмял под себя уже треть реального звучания альбома – скоро не нужны будут уже никакие Soulsavers. Впрочем, в золотой хитовый «бэст», который группа неизменно возит с собой в бесконечные туры, его песни не войдут никогда.

М ы еще не готовы. Мы не доросли». Так начинается четырнадцатый альбом гигантов синтетического рока, самый актуальный и сострадательный в их активе. Это лишь первое из множества предупреждений на пластинке под названием «Spirit». Поверх торжественных аккордов и электронного грува «Going Backwards» Дэйв Гаан сетует, что «мы перестали чувствовать», насмотревшись на «смерти в прямом эфире». А уже следующая дорожка «Where’s the Revolution» призывает к яростному восстанию с упреками в адрес простых людей.

Своим многоценным баритоном Гаан утверждает, что мы были «пьяны слишком долго», поэтому наши права оказались в руках «манипулирующего правительства». Теперь очевидно, что главный лирик и автор песен Мартин Гор больше не может опираться на духовные искания, определявшие музыку DM десятилетиями.

Искусно изображая внутренний диалог между искуплением и потворством, с прорывной пластинкой «Violator» Гор фактически изобрел новый синтаксис и уподобил человеческое бытие чистилищу, в котором ведется борьба между греховными удовольствиями и стремлением к более высоким материям.

Его напарник, способный сочетать неизбежность, духовность и беспутную скуку в садомазохистском и любовном контексте, с особым рвением передавал эти мысли широкой аудитории. Дэйв Гаан делал отчаяние сексуально привлекательным на протяжении тридцати с лишним лет, но на это раз у него другая задача: фронтмен призван отвести внимание от атласных простыней и убедить нас, что стареющие легенды рока действительно заботятся о гражданских свободах.

Все три первых песни посвящены современному миру, однако позже группа возвращается к своим привычным идеям. Примечателен, однако, «Poorman», где группа застенчиво ссылается на спартанские мелодии «Violator» (если конкретно – на номер «Policy of Truth») и полностью отказывается от иронии, критикуя корпорации за «большие возможности» и тотальный контроль. Но DEPECHE MODE доставляют гимны с таким мастерством, что искренность почти не имеет значения.

И даже несмотря на то, что эти социально значимые «агитки» позволяют с песней на устах встречать сегодняшние заголовки, дуэт все еще пишет универсальную музыку стадионных масштабов, достаточно гибкую для того, чтобы вписаться в интерьер вашей спальни и резонировать с вашей собственной жизнью.

Временами эта последовательность работает против них. Шестой альбом с момента ухода мультиинструменталиста и аранжировщика Алана Уайлдера находит DEPECHE MODE за перетасовкой самых существенных компонентов своего звука. Резкие гитары на «Cover Me» позволяют закрыть глаза и найти себя прямо под северным сиянием, о котором поет Дэйв Гаан, но если не брать во внимание этот номер, «Spirit» лишается атмосферы других материалов команды. Если бы продюсер Джеймс Форд (FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE, KLAXONS, ARCTIC MONKEYS) сделал звуки слегка понеряшливей, альбом мог бы занять более выгодные позиции в общем каталоге DEPECHE MODE.

Вместо этого Форд, который также является половиной электронного дуэта SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO, имитирует образцовые работы еще одного продюсера Марка «Флада» Эллиса. Но даже он не подражал себе, когда смешивал последний альбом DM, гораздо более творчески решительный «Delta Machine» (2013). Тем не менее, эту напускную легкость нельзя приравнять к халатности. Группа на самом деле старается.

В бридже «Where’s the Revolution» Гаан раз за разом повторяет строчку «поезд идет, он приближается… займите места». И вы можете черпать вдохновение из этой лирики независимо от того, пойдете ли вы на улицу с актуальными лозунгами или останетесь дома, подпишите очередную петицию или нет. Директива Мартина Гора в меньшей степени касается активизма – это скорее призыв к тому, чтобы открыть свое сердце и начать руководствоваться своей совестью. Для него термин «Spirit» лишь недавно начал включать политику, но этот «дух» питается тем же эросом, что и остальная музыка DM. Группа Depeche Mode выпустила 17 марта 2017 года свой 14-й студийный альбом «Spirit». Коллектив впервые поработал над звуком с продюсером Джеймсом Фордом из Simian Mobile Disco (Foals, Florence & The Machine, Arctic Monkeys).

Тейлор Свифт анонсировала выход своего нового альбома «Midnights». Это произошло во время вручения ей награды за лучший клип года на церемонии MTV VMA 28 августа 2022 года, а подробности певица озвучила позднее в соцсетях. Церемония вручения MTV Video Music Awards (MTV VMA) состоялась 28 августа 2022 года в Prudential Center в Ньюарке, штат Нью-Джерси. В роли ведущих выступили рэперы Джек Харлоу, Ники Минаж и LL Cool J.

Триумфаторами вечера стали Харлоу (на фото), Lil Nas X, Тейлор Свифт и Гарри Стайлз. Джек получил четыре награды, в том числе три – за коллаборацию с Lil Nas X «Industry Baby». По три приза унесли также Гарри Стайлз (в том числе за альбом года «Harry’s House») и Тейлор Свифт, которая была удостоена главной награды – «видео года» за клип «All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version)». В концертной части церемонии выступили также Эминем со Снуп Доггом, Panic! At The Disco, Lizzo, Blackpink и Maneskin, чей номер в прямой трансляции подвергся цензуре из-за слишком откровенного наряда солиста Дамиано Давида. Как обратили внимание зрители, большую часть их выступления камера показывала крупные планы зала, а не сцену.

Неожиданным стало появление на церемонии Джонни Деппа в роли эмблемы MTV – Лунного человека. Правда, внутри костюма был друго человек, но на него проецировалось лицо Деппа и звучал его голос. Актер впервые принял участие (пусть виртуальное) в публичном мероприятии со времени его суда с Эмбер Херд. Он выступил еще несколько раз за вечер.

Spirit

Spirit is the fourteenth studio album by English electronic music band Depeche Mode. It was released on 17 March 2017 by Columbia Records and Mute Records. The album was recorded with new producer James Ford, and was preceded by the single «Where’s the Revolution«. It was the final Depeche Mode studio album to feature co-founder and keyboardist Andy Fletcher before his death on 26 May 2022.

Background and composition

Much of the inspiration behind Spirit arose from their distaste of the political climate in both the United States and the United Kingdom. In an interview with Vevo, Dave Gahan stated, «We’re really kind of upset about what’s going on in the world.» In the same interview, after hearing about being praised by alt-right activist Richard Spencer, Gahan called him out and did not want to be associated with him or the alt-right. Depeche Mode would embrace their political message heavily in the music video for «Where’s the Revolution«, which represents the band in a very Marxist style. One of the themes that appears is climate change as Martin confirmed «‘The Worst Crime‘ is about destroying the environment. We are not just destroying it for those of us who live in the present. We are condemning the planet and the next generations, our children and our grandchildren.» Gore confirmed that the opening track «Going Backwards» is about the regression of society as well as technology’s role in the regression, but Gore also believed «that new technologies would bring the world together – the world would be united by them. We were all enthusiastic about the Arab Spring, when people started organizing themselves with social media and fought for their freedom. But then everything went wrong: the Middle East seems to be falling apart». One of the major differences about the delivery on Spirit compared to past albums is how direct and straightforward some of the lyrics are. Gahan told Billboard «There are songs that are quite literal on the album. ‘Scum‘ for instance, it was a lot of fun recording that song and singing it. Great lyric». Perhaps the closing track «Fail» is one of the band’s most direct and angry songs as it is the first time they used profanity in their music. When asked about why «Fail» was chosen to be the closing track Gore explained that it «sums up the album in a way. The good thing about it is the lyrics might be depressing but the music is so pretty». When the band was deciding on the tracklist, Gahan wanted to end the album on a happy note with «So Much Love» but was ultimately outvoted by the other members.

Depeche Mode doesn’t only tackle political subject matter on Spirit. The track «Poison Heart» is written like a breakup song, but Gahan explained that it isn’t a breakup song and is about the inability to relate to other people. Gore wrote the track «Eternal» for his younger daughter and, despite its dark tone and dramatic composition, Gore believes that «it’s my way of romance. I think that when you put a child into this era, you have to take the worst into account«.

Gahan revealed that Gore had many instrumentals left over from his solo album MG released in 2015. One of those instrumentals was later developed into the track «You Move«. «You Move» was also the first time Gore and Gahan wrote a song together. Some of the tracks ended up with a very cinematic composition such as «Cover Me«. According to an interview with keyboard programmer Matrixxman, working on «Cover Me» was initially difficult but Gahan inspired everyone to get very creative on that track. In the same interview, Matrixxman confirmed that there were several tracks that didn’t make it onto the album but they never made it past the demo stage. It was also his first time working with modular synthesizers. Compared to 2013’s Delta Machine, Spirit is in many a ways more electronic-oriented compared to the blues-inspired sound on the previous album, but the track «Poorman» still sees the band explore their blues influences.

About why the album is titled Spirit, Dave Gahan revealed in an interview with Rolling Stone:

We called the album Spirit, because it’s like, ‘Where’s the spirit gone?’ or ‘Where’s the spirit in humanity?’ We considered calling it Maelstrom – that was a bit too heavy metal.

In the same interview, Gahan talked about the theme of the album:

I wouldn’t call this a political album, because I don’t listen to music in a political way. But it’s definitely about humanity, and our place in that.

Spirit relates to so much that is going on in the world. Although a lot of the songs were written before Brexit or Trump taking power, there was already a feeling that the world was in a mess. I couldn’t write an album without addressing that. It felt wrong to turn my back on it and write about other things.

On 11 October 2016, the band announced that they would embark on the Global Spirit Tour to support the album. The tour kicked off in Stockholm Solna, Sweden, on 5 May 2017 and ended on 25 July 2018 in Berlin, Germany. The Global Spirit Tour would go on to become the band’s largest tour and would see the band play to more than 3 million fans around the world. The final two shows of the Global Spirit Tour were recorded for their concert film and documentary Spirits in the Forest, released in theaters in November 2019. The full concert film later received a home release on 26 June 2020.

In addition to the obligatory CD version, the album was also released as a deluxe edition with two CDs (standard & Jungle Spirit Mixes), as well as a vinyl edition.

Reception

Spirit received generally positive reviews from critics upon release. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalised rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the album received an average score of 74, based on 24 reviews. Neil Z. Yeung of AllMusic stated, «Robust and fearless, Spirit may end up being one of the earliest and best salvos of its political era. Despite dour lyrics to the contrary, Depeche Mode haven’t given up on humanity». Saby Reyes-Kulkarni of Pitchfork wrote that «Spirit is so convincing in spite of its radical shift in tenor. For both the band and audience, that shift couldn’t have come at a better time». Kitty Empire of The Guardian stated that «By the time cosseted arena bands reach their 37th year, their need to engage with the real world is moot, but here’s Martin Gore – DepMo’s chief songwriter – lambasting greedy corporations». Various critics have cited the album’s conscious lyrics and bleak instrumentals as a positive aspect.

In contrast to the generally positive reviews, Andy Gill of The Independent criticized the album, stating that «Depeche Mode get serious and political, which doesn’t really suit them.» While many critics praised the band’s ability to tackle political and social commentary, a decent amount were left unsatisfied. Despite mixed reception from some critics, Spirit still appeared on many EOY 2017 lists such as lists from Q Magazine and AllMusic.

On many review aggregate sites, Spirit received mixed to positive ratings from site users. On Sputnikmusic, the user rating average is 3.2/10. Over on RateYourMusic, the user rating is sitting at 2.83/5. Also, on Albumoftheyear, the user score is at 65/100/. It is notable that the average user score’s are slightly lower than the critic score though still mixed to positive.

Commercial performance

Spirit debuted at number five on the UK Albums Chart with 23,658 units sold in its first week, becoming the band’s 17th top-10 album in the United Kingdom. The following week, it dropped out of the top 10 to number 17 with sales of 5,658 copies. The album debuted at number five on the US Billboard 200, selling 64,000 album-equivalent units (62,000 in pure album sales). Even though Spirit’s first week of sales wasn’t as successful as Delta Machine’s in the United Kingdom, Spirit’s first week out performed Delta Machine’s first week of sales in the United States by 12,000 album-equivalent units.

The album was supported by the Global Spirit Tour. The tour started on 05 May 2017 and it ended on 25 July 2018. The band played 40 songs, on a total of 130 shows.

A misguided endorsement from one of America’s most hated figures only serves to make the fury here sound even more righteous

F rom New Labour and Britpop to Donald Trump and Neil Young’s Rockin’ in the Free World, politicians’ attempts to co-opt pop music seldom end well. But spare a thought for poor old Depeche Mode, recipients of perhaps the least welcome political endorsement since Margaret Thatcher killed the burgeoning career of 80s hopefuls Thrashing Doves stone dead by saying she liked their video on Saturday Superstore. Last month, American neo-Nazi Richard Spencer – best known as That Guy Who Got Punched on Live Television – described them as “the official band of the alt-right”. A “lifelong fan” of Depeche Mode, he went on to suggest that “ambiguity” in their music implied they had “a fascist element”.

On the one hand, well, he would say that, wouldn’t he? A cursory glance at a photo of Spencer might instill music fans of a certain vintage with a curious sense of deja vu: with his black clothes, Hitlerjungend coiffure, penchant for being photographed looking moody in the snow and obsession with unpicking lyrical “ambiguities”, Spencer resembles exactly a particular breed of desperate knobshiner who lurked round the indie and goth scenes in the 80s, convinced that everyone from New Order to Nitzer Ebb – and indeed Depeche Mode – was sending out coded messages celebrating the imminent arrival of a Fourth Reich.

But even leaving aside the band issuing what you might tactfully call a firm rebuttal (“he’s a cunt,” suggested frontman Dave Gahan, adding: “I saw the video of him getting punched. He deserved it”), there is the fact that Spencer’s remarks arrived just as Depeche Mode released an album that gives every impression of being an hour-long howl of outrage and horror at a world in which people such as Richard Spencer appear to be in the ascendant.

In fairness, Spirit’s lyrics deal in the same broad brushstrokes as People Are People or Get the Balance Right – “the world we live in and life in general” as the lyrics of Somebody put it, rather than specifics – but it doesn’t take a genius to work out what’s fuelling the album’s tenor. It opens with Going Backwards, a kind of bleaker, internet mob-inspired take on Devo’s theory of de-evolution (“We’re going backwards, armed with new technology, we’re going backwards to a caveman mentality”) and ends with Fail, on which Martin Gore’s bell-like tenor offers the unpromising conclusion: “Our consciences are bankrupt – we’re fucked.” In between, a mood noticeably similar to the inconsolable gloom that shrouded 1987’s Black Celebration is spiked with bursts of fizzing anger.

The latter isn’t an emotion Depeche Mode are particularly known for – angst yes; fury no – but it proves to have a particularly potent effect. If they’ve never quite matched the music they made between the mid-80s and mid-90s, all of Depeche Mode’s recent albums have had their moments, but not moments like Where’s the Revolution or Scum. The former attempts to turn their ability to rouse stadiums with sleazily paced anthemics into a galvanising force: “Come on people, you’re letting me down,” complains the chorus, while elsewhere the lyrics borrow from the Impressions’ People Get Ready. The latter, meanwhile, proceeds at mid-tempo, but is drenched in distortion, and as a result, sounds as if it’s shaking with barely contained rage.

It’s not the only time the impact of the album is sharpened by its sound. Produced by James Ford – presumably hired more on the basis of his role as half of the electronic duo Simian Mobile Disco than for his fame as the Arctic Monkeys’ preferred producer – it simultaneously strips things back and amps them up, as evidenced by the relentless, Suicide-like pounding of So Much Love and the fantastic Cover Me, the latter a lone crack of light amid the otherwise consuming darkness: it slowly builds up to a finale that takes up half the song, is entirely instrumental and based around a simple analogue synth arpeggio. Poison Heart, meanwhile, offers a distinctly Depeche Modeish twist on retro soul: the rhythm pared back to a metronomic boom-crash, the choppy, staccato guitar electronically warped until it feels like a punch to the guts, the background occasionally erupting into the kind of industrial clanking that decorated 1983’s Construction Time Again.

There is an argument often posited about artists in Depeche Mode’s position, which suggests their new albums exist mostly as an excuse to announce tours, on which they fill the world’s arenas on the basis of music they made 25 or 30 years ago rather than out of any real desire on the part of the public to hear what they’ve been up to lately. You can see where it comes from, but Spirit suggests it’s not so straightforward. It has flaws: You Move isn’t the most robust addition to the canon of Depeche Mode tracks that Smash Hits would once have dubbed “pervalicious”; the lyrics of Poorman edge uncomfortably close to the deadly handiwork of Noel Gallagher. (The titular poor man is apparently both “on the road / pushing along his heavy load / heading for no fixed abode”, and “on the street / lying in the snow and sleet / begging for something to eat”.)

Then again, the odd burst of lyrical clumsiness has always been part of Depeche Mode’s makeup – this is, after all, the band that once inquired if people are people, “why should it be you and I get along so awfully”. Furthermore, on Spirit, the moments where inspiration dips are few, far between and swamped by those where Depeche Mode sound raw and alive and rigidly opposed to merely going through the motions.

В слегка сумбурном черно-белом видео за авторством Антона Корбайна Дэйв Гэхан, Мартин Гор и Энди Флетчер щеголяют с карл-марксовскими бородами, а сюжет выстроен вокруг эмоционального выступления вокалиста на дощатой трибуне.

Усмотреть в таком образном ряде симпатии к национализму можно было лишь в шутку (Спенсер и сам, кажется, говорил не вполне всерьез), но ясно одно: едва ли не впервые в своей карьере Depeche Mode подготовили блок очевидно политизированных песен.

Причины такого поворота от мечтательного настроения предыдущих альбомов «Sounds of Universe» и «Delta Machine» продиктованы происхождением Гора и Гэхана — британцев, уже много лет проживающих в Калифорнии. По словам вокалиста, президентская кампания Дональда Трампа и ее результат произвели сокрушительное воздействие на него самого и его близких, включая Гора.

Итогом стали диктующие настроение всей пластинки «Going Backwards» (про возвращение в каменный век), «Where’s The Revolution», злобная «Scum» и электроблюзовая «Poorman».

В соответствии с тревожным состоянием музыкантов изменился и звук. После трилогии альбомов («Playing the Angel», «Sounds of Universe» и «Delta Machine»), записанных с продюсером Беном Хиллером, Depeche Mode обратились за помощью к Джеймсу Форду, специализирующемся на работе с молодыми рокерами типа Arctic Monkeys.

Прежде всего, это тягучая «The Worst Crime» — написанная Гэханом песня, в которой аккомпанементом для его голоса стала почти одинокая гитара; готовый саундтрек к новой серии «бондианы» и идеальный номер для того, чтобы трибуны на концертах озарялись тысячами огней мобильников.

Певец вообще с каждым годом набирает сонграйтерского таланта, и если так пойдет дальше, то он сможет легко подвинуть Гора на троне основного песенника Depeche Mode. Что же касается удач Мартина Гора, то помимо уже перечисленных «Going Backwards» и гимна революции к ним безусловно можно отнести краут-рокерский проигрыш в финале «Cover Me» с гипнотическим ритмом и фирменными клавишными пассажами.

Если подвести итог, то «Spirit» — это самый увлекательный альбом Depeche Mode со времен «Playing the Angel».

Гэхан окончательно отказался от возвышенной тоски 80-х и с каждой следующей пластинкой поет все более напористо и ядовито. В музыкальном смысле группа тоже с достоинством вышла из кризиса, воспользовавшись проверенным топливом в виде социальной злости. Конечно, в исполнении давно разменявших шестой десяток миллионеров призывы к революции звучат довольно забавно, зато они точно найдут отклик в сердцах российских фанатов, перед которыми артисты предстанут 15 июля на стадионе «Открытие Арена».

Никогда еще песни Depeche Mode так точно не рифмовались с классическими хитами русского рока, в которых авторы тоже пели про движение вспять, необходимость перемен и предчувствие гражданской войны.

Собственно, что желать от пусть великой группы, но созданной 37 (!) лет назад, и выпускающей уже 14-й студийный альбом? Только подтверждений того, что они живы телом и душой. Подтверждение прибыло. Spirit записали точно люди с фантазией, не списавшиеся и не спившиеся. Это очень мощный альбом для группы с такой богатой историей.

Эти 12 песен можно использовать как угодно. Есть 12 песен для блистательного концертного исполнения (со всеми этими надписями на пол-стадиона и летающими космическими пиратами). Есть 1 радиохит Where’s the Revolution. Есть несколько блюзов (выделяется The Worst Crime, конечно). Есть и проходные песни. Вполне себе баланс, если ты делаешь 14-й альбом и до этого были гениальные (называть не буду, каждый для себя такие точно назовет).

Но есть еще третье измерение. Буквально каждый трек альбома можно себе представить на стадионе как концертный номер экстра-класса. Не песню, а именно номер. С «мы всё просрали» текстом на всю ширь стадиона — знаете, это весьма впечатлит миллионы многих. Заставит-таки задуматься. Разве это не миссия искусства, по гамбургскому-то? «Депеша» не мелочатся по поводу избрания Трампа или миллионов мигрантов — они говорят по-крупному выпукло. И это может сработать.

Так что отдыхайте на тему хитов или антикварных семплов, ребята. Depeche Mode выпустил просто альбом. Не больше, но и не меньше.

Выходит новый альбом Depeche Mode «Spirit»

Пару недель назад музыкантам группы Depeche Mode пришлось обозначить свою политическую позицию — не самый очевидный поступок для ветеранов «новой романтики», уже ставших классиками поп-музыки.

Причиной для публичного заявления стала реплика лидера американских ультраправых Ричарда Спенсера, который в ходе рассуждений о тоталитарном имидже группы назвал ее «официальной группой ультраправых».

В свою очередь, поводом для выступления Спенсера стал клип на пилотный сингл с нового альбома «Spirit» под названием «Where’s The Revolution». В слегка сумбурном черно-белом видео за авторством Антона Корбайна Дэйв Гэхан, Мартин Гор и Энди Флетчер щеголяют с карл-марксовскими бородами, а сюжет выстроен вокруг эмоционального выступления вокалиста на дощатой трибуне.

Усмотреть в таком образном ряде симпатии к национализму можно было лишь в шутку (Спенсер и сам, кажется, говорил не вполне всерьез), но ясно одно: едва ли не впервые в своей карьере Depeche Mode подготовили блок очевидно политизированных песен.

Причины такого поворота от мечтательного настроения предыдущих альбомов «Sounds of Universe» и «Delta Machine» продиктованы происхождением Гора и Гэхана — британцев, уже много лет проживающих в Калифорнии. По словам вокалиста, президентская кампания Дональда Трампа и ее результат произвели сокрушительное воздействие на него самого и его близких, включая Гора.

Итогом стали диктующие настроение всей пластинки «Going Backwards» (про возвращение в каменный век), «Where’s The Revolution», злобная «Scum» и электроблюзовая «Poorman».

В соответствии с тревожным состоянием музыкантов изменился и звук. После трилогии альбомов («Playing the Angel», «Sounds of Universe» и «Delta Machine»), записанных с продюсером Беном Хиллером, Depeche Mode обратились за помощью к Джеймсу Форду, специализирующемся на работе с молодыми рокерами типа Arctic Monkeys.

Естественным образом «Spirit» зазвучал более сыро и по-рокерски — музыканты говорят, что для них эта пластинка ближе к классическим дискам «Violator» и «Ultra», на которых началось основополагающее для поздних Depeche Mode увлечение блюзом и соулом.

Надо сказать, что также этот стилистический сдвиг усугубили сольные работы Гэхана в компании дуэта Soulsavers, на которых он окончательно освоился в роли блюзового крунера.

Вообще, музыкальные перемены тут гораздо интереснее идеологических: именно они принесли самые яркие плоды.

Прежде всего, это тягучая «The Worst Crime» — написанная Гэханом песня, в которой аккомпанементом для его голоса стала почти одинокая гитара; готовый саундтрек к новой серии «бондианы» и идеальный номер для того, чтобы трибуны на концертах озарялись тысячами огней мобильников.

Певец вообще с каждым годом набирает сонграйтерского таланта, и если так пойдет дальше, то он сможет легко подвинуть Гора на троне основного песенника Depeche Mode. Что же касается удач Мартина Гора, то помимо уже перечисленных «Going Backwards» и гимна революции к ним безусловно можно отнести краут-рокерский проигрыш в финале «Cover Me» с гипнотическим ритмом и фирменными клавишными пассажами.

Если подвести итог, то «Spirit» — это самый увлекательный альбом Depeche Mode со времен «Playing the Angel».

Гэхан окончательно отказался от возвышенной тоски 80-х и с каждой следующей пластинкой поет все более напористо и ядовито. В музыкальном смысле группа тоже с достоинством вышла из кризиса, воспользовавшись проверенным топливом в виде социальной злости. Конечно, в исполнении давно разменявших шестой десяток миллионеров призывы к революции звучат довольно забавно, зато они точно найдут отклик в сердцах российских фанатов, перед которыми артисты предстанут 15 июля на стадионе «Открытие Арена».

Никогда еще песни Depeche Mode так точно не рифмовались с классическими хитами русского рока, в которых авторы тоже пели про движение вспять, необходимость перемен и предчувствие гражданской войны.

Package includes never-before-seen full-length concert audio & video from final Berlin shows, directed by Anton Corbijn

This special four-disc (two video discs plus two audio discs) configuration presents the definitive Depeche Mode: SPiRiTS in the Forest experience at its most immersive, and will be available in bothDVD or Blu-Ray formats. The package’s two video discs contain the SPiRiTS in the Forest documentary, alongside LiVE SPiRiTS, a full-length Depeche Mode concert performance filmed at the final two shows of the Global Spirit Tour at the Waldbühne in Berlin. This footage has never been previously released or broadcast in its entirety. In addition to the two video discs, the package includes two CDs containing the LiVE SPiRiTS soundtrack, the live audio recording from the performance. The package promises to be essential for collectors, longtime fans, and newcomers alike.

Depeche Mode are dropping info nuggets, audio and whatever else on us this early morning. In addition to full audio for “Where’s The Revolution” (and WOW!), iTunes has the details for the album up.

Spirit will be released digitally and physically worldwide as a standard 12 track album on March 17th on Columbia Records. The band will also release a 2-CD Deluxe version of the album featuring a special 28-page booklet of exclusive artwork and photos, along with 5 remixes created by Depeche Mode, Matrixxman and Kurt Uenala, collectively entitled the ‘Jungle Spirit Mixes’. The vinyl version of Spirit will be released on two 180 gram LPs, featuring the standard album and a special SPIRIT etching on the 4th side. All artwork and photographs accompanying the album are by Depeche Mode’s longtime creative collaborator and renowned filmmaker Anton Corbijn.

Британская группа Depeche Mode объявила о том, что весной 2017 года выпустит новый альбом под названием Spirit и отправится в мировое турне. Пресс-конференция коллектива прошла во вторник, 11 октября, в Милане. Она транслировалась на странице группы в Facebook.

Spirit — четырнадцатая студийная работа в дискографии Depeche Mode. Продюсером альбома стал участник электронного дуэта Simian Mobile Disco Джеймс Форд, ранее работавший с Arctic Monkeys и Florence + The Machine.

Предыдущий диск, Delta Machine, вышел в 2013 году.

Depeche Mode have tentatively scheduled their 14th studio album, titled Spirit, for a spring 2017 release.

The band made the announcement at a heavily promoted press conference from Milan, broadcasting the news — as well as a few snippets of new music — live via their social media feeds. Tracked in Santa Barbara and New York with producer James Ford, the new LP reportedly features additional synth programming from techno star Matrixxman.

In addition to releasing Spirit, the veteran trio plan to hit the road for what they’re calling the Global Spirit Tour. The band revealed they’re beginning in Europe, with 32 shows in 21 countries from May through July. North and South American dates will be announced at a later date. A portion of the tour proceeds is being set aside to benefit the charity: water organization. For complete information, visit Depeche Mode’s website.

Depeche Mode’s Spirit announcement arrives several weeks after they shared the news of the impending arrival of Video Singles Collection, a triple-disc collection offering a career-spanning visual overview of their singles discography. That set, which offers 55 videos in all, is due Nov. 11.

News of a new Depeche Mode LP, while certainly exciting for fans, is not entirely unexpected. In January, band member Martin L. Gore predicted they’d return to the studio in April — and his comments came several months after singer Dave Gahan mused, «If we were to work in the same pattern that we have over the last, God knows how many years, I suppose our plan would be to go into the studio sometime next year and release an album some point in 2017. … I think we have more in us.»

Depeche Mode have extended their tour in support of last year’s Spirit into 2018. Specifically, they’ve added nine more arena shows in select North American cities due to «overwhelming fan demand.»

They’ll begin on May 22 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, and conclude at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto on June 11. In between they’ll hit Sacramento, San Antonio, Tulsa, Chicago, Philadelphia, Brooklyn and Boston. Check below for the dates and venues.

Tickets are going on sale to the general public on Feb. 16 at Live Nation and their apps. Times vary based on the location, so check Live Nation for full details. Fans can register for a pre-sale that begins Feb. 12 at 10AM local time though Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan program at their website, and Citi cardholders have access to another pre-sale that takes place at Citi PrivatePass, also beginning on Feb. 12 at 10 AM local time.

In an interview with Vevo, Dave Gahan stated, «We’re really kind of upset about what’s going on in the world.» [1] In the same interview, when hearing of being praised by alt-right activist Richard Spencer, Gahan rejected the praise and did not want to be associated with him or the alt-right. Depeche Mode would embrace their political message heavily in the music video for «Where’s the Revolution», which represents the band in a very Marxist style. [2] One of the themes that appears is climate change as Martin confirmed: «‘The Worst Crime’ is about destroying the environment. We are not just destroying it for those of us who live in the present. We are condemning the planet and the next generations, our children and our grandchildren.» [3] Gore confirmed that the opening track «Going Backwards» is about the regression of society as well as technology’s role in the regression, but Gore also believed «that new technologies would bring the world together – the world would be united by them. We were all enthusiastic about the Arab Spring, when people started organizing themselves with social media and fought for their freedom. But then everything went wrong: the Middle East seems to be falling apart». [4] One of the major differences about the delivery on Spirit compared to past albums is how direct and straightforward some of the lyrics are. Gahan told Billboard, «There are songs that are quite literal on the album. ‘Scum’ for instance, it was a lot of fun recording that song and singing it.» [5] Perhaps the closing track «Fail» is one of the band’s most direct and angry songs as it is the first time they used profanity in their music. When asked about why «Fail» was chosen to be the closing track, Gore explained that it «sums up the album in a way. The good thing about it is the lyrics might be depressing but the music is so pretty». [6] When the band was deciding on the tracklist, Gahan wanted to end the album on a happy note with «So Much Love», but was ultimately outvoted by the other members. [7] Depeche Mode does not only tackle political subject matter on Spirit. The track «Poison Heart» is written like a breakup song, but Gahan explained that it is not a breakup song and is about the inability to relate to other people. [8] Gore wrote the track «Eternal» for his younger daughter and, despite its dark tone and dramatic composition, Gore believes that «it’s my way of romance. I think that when you put a child into this era, you have to take the worst into account». [9] Gahan revealed that Gore had many instrumentals left over from his solo album MG (2015). One of those instrumentals was later developed into the track «You Move». [10] «You Move» was also the first time Gore and Gahan wrote a song together. Some of the tracks ended up with a very cinematic composition such as «Cover Me». According to an interview with keyboard programmer Matrixxman, working on «Cover Me» was initially difficult, but Gahan inspired everyone to get very creative on that track. [11] In the same interview, Matrixxman confirmed that there were several tracks that didn’t make it onto the album but they never made it past the demo stage. It was also his first time working with modular synthesizers. Compared to 2013’s Delta Machine, Spirit is in many a ways more electronic-oriented compared to the blues-inspired sound on the previous album, but the track «Poorman» still sees the band explore their blues influences. Promotion On 11 October 2016, the band announced that they would embark on the Global Spirit Tour to support the album. The tour began in Stockholm, Sweden, on 5 May 2017 and ended on 25 July 2018 in Berlin, Germany. [12] The Global Spirit Tour went on to become the band’s largest tour, and saw the band play to more than 3 million fans around the world. The final two shows of the Global Spirit Tour were recorded for their concert film and documentary Spirits in the Forest, released in theaters in November 2019. The album is called “Spirit” that will be backed up with the “Global Spirit Tour” that kicks off in Stockholm on May 5th! The forthcoming album comes out in the Spring of 2017 and we’re hoping to get details on a lead off single soon. The band look great and Dave Gahan got things going by announcing the album and tour, how proud they are of the record, working with producer James Ford, and a quick video of some new songs which was really exciting. Depeche Mode Announce Global Spirit Tour Tour to kick off May 5, 2017 in Stockholm, Sweden Depeche Mode’s new studio album Spirit to be released in early 2017 MILAN, ITALY (October 11, 2016) – Depeche Mode, one of modern music’s most influential artists, announced today at a special event in Milan that they will be embarking on a world tour in May 2017 to support their new studio album, Spirit, due to be released in early 2017. Following the release of the album, the Global Spirit Tour will provide lifelong fans and new fans alike with an opportunity to see the band’s ground-breaking and intensely emotive shows. Track-By-Track: Depeche Mode – Spirit Depeche Mode – Spirit Dave Gahan, Martin Gore and Andy Fletcher return this spring with Depeche Mode‘s 14th album and second for Columbia, Spirit. Four years on from the chart-topping success of Delta Machine, the new work sprawls across 12 tracks that were produced by James Ford, aka half of Simian Mobile Disco, whose previous production credits include albums by Arctic Monkeys and Florence And The Machine. At the album’s London playback on bespoke speakers at new Kings Cross bar Spiritland, Ford was on hand for introductions. He describes the “bleak, dystopian demos” presented to him, and points out that he’d never made albums with people who’d made more albums than he has. He hopes the finished work is a “bold, powerful, direct” album. It’s certainly a politically engaged one, with serious attempts to tackle in broad brush strokes the politics of the age, even as every day they get stranger, but there’s space for relationship break-ups and even a lullaby of sorts too. Going Backwards “We have opinions, we have not evolved, we have no respect, we have lost control, we’re going backwards,” mulls Gahan, quite the preacher of doom on an opener which sets the scene for a more than usually political record from the Basildon trio, and one which does not mince words. Over a backgrounding piano he asks, “Are you counting the casualties?” It’s a direct response to a news cycle that has rarely seemed wilder in these post-Brexit referendum, post-Trump election days. Where’s The Revolution The first track from the new album to break cover, Where’s The Revolution continues the political theme. “You’ve been kept down, pushed round, lied to, fed truths. Who’s making your decisions, you or your religion, your government, your country, you patriotic junkies. Where’s the revolution”. Spiky guitar and distorted backing vocals round out the insistent sound. The Worst Crime By now it’s clear that Ford’s production sheen doesn’t detract from the Mode’s sound, though Gahan is installed well within, rather than on top of, the mix for the most part. It’s also clear that politics remains to the fore on what’s transpiring to be their most political album yet. This slower piece mentions “misguided leaders” and “uneducated readers”. “For whatever reason we now find ourselves in this, we are all tried for treason… how could we commit the worst crime,” sings Gahan, quite the portent of doom. It’s not a track that immediately grabs, but its sincerity is not in doubt. Scum Gahan’s vocals (or is it Gore?) are distorted heavily here, making the lyrics difficult to hear, and while the tempo is hardly frenetic this does tilt towards the sort of dance music Ford mentioned. A lyrics sheet would be handy here. You Move Another inauspicious start that goes for mysterious but sounds like it’s not sure what it’s about. “We don’t have that life no more,” sings Gahan, articulating words that suggest the first of several tracks which sound as though they’re about a break-up. Cover Me One of the album’s better tracks, it recalls the slide guitars and atmospherics of Pink Floyd’s Breathe before giving way to a second half that’s much more intriguing, featuring synthy arpeggiations. The lack of vocals thereon marks this one out as space for a costume change in a live set, but the music holds its own. Eternal This one sounds like Gore singing a lullaby to a child. It’s very short, but no less sweet. “Oh little one I will protect you,” he promises, “surround you with my love as well as any man can, as well as any man could.” Poison Heart Break-up is back on the agenda here, and so is a beat, albeit a mid-tempo one. It has a sense of the unfinished about it, with a bluesy guitar-led feel that aims a few tequilas on from Personal Jesus. “You have poison in your heart, you know we have to break up,” Gahan says. So Much Love This one’s a proper banger, with correspondingly proper synthy beaty urgency about it. “There is so much love in me,” implores Gahan, sounding like he’s singing an obvious single and crying out for attention on more than one level. It sports a classic singalong chorus, a classic song structure and lovely, lovely synths – and even a mic drop conclusion. Undoubtedly one of the album’s two best tracks. Poorman Following the full throttle of the track before, this one eases back a little, and back to politics, with a plinky plonky piano opening underpinning gospel vocal harmonies, the sum augmented by stabby synths. “There’s no news, Still got the blues… Corporations get the breaks, keeping almost everything they make. Tell us how long it’s going to take, when will it trickle down.” It’s a curious theme to be warming to when you’re signed to a major label division of one of the planet’s largest entertainment companies, but there they stand. Is it directed at Sony, or at corporations more generally? No More (This is the Last Time) “Repeat the process, repeat the line, you go your way, I’ll go mine.” Here lies another entry in the break-up canon. “Reach the top, slowly fade away… Last time I say goodbye… You don’t mean a thing to me no more.” Harsh, but is it about more than the disintegration of a relationship between two people? Is this a parting of ways on a larger scale? Fail Gore takes lead vocals again, and his voice sounds here more baroque than ever, with an increasing distance between his output and that of Gahan. That a song called Fail ends the album scarcely leaves a sign pointing to positivity. Instead it underlines a sense of foreboding that runs right through this most serious of Depeche Mode albums.
