Spider-Man: Battle for New York lets you play as either Spider-Man or Green Goblin, and features ability and power upgrade options as you play.

Spider-Man: Battle for New York is a Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS game loosely based within the Ultimate Spider-Man universe. The cutscenes in this game are drawn by Marvel Comics artist Ron Lim.

Plot summary

After finding out Spider-Man’s true identity and how he gained his super powers, Norman Osborn tries to recreate the process on himself, thinking that his superior knowledge and access to his ‘Oz Formula’ would get a better result. He then turns himself into the Green Goblin (with a few side effects). Thinking his experiment to be a success, he then starts to use his formula on other people, creating a goblin army. It is now up to Spider-Man to figure out what’s going on and put a stop to the Goblin’s plans before he can take over New York.

Gameplay

The player will also have to keep an eye out for the Threat Assessment Meter (or TAM for short), when it appears, it will point towards where Spider-Man & Green Goblin have to go next and also tells you how much time left they have to solve the problem. If they fail to sort out the problem when the TAM meter runs out, it’ll be game over.

Spider-Man: Battle for New York Review

Variety and slick presentation go a long way toward making you forget about the lack of originality and the quest’s brief length.

Spider-Man: Battle for New York is a beat-’em-up where you control Spider-Man for roughly half of the game’s approximately 20 levels and control his nemesis, the Green Goblin, for the other half. Generally speaking, you’ll go through a level as the Goblin, which typically involves trashing some area of the city; then, for the next level, you’ll go through the same area as Spidey and have to fix whatever calamities the green monster caused, rescuing any civilians in distress. Along the way, you’ll also have to deliver beatdowns to the various gang members and S.H.I.E.L.D. agents that get in your way, as well as a number of powerful villains taken from Marvel’s The Ultimates universe. The actual nuts and bolts of gameplay are mostly typical for the brawler genre. But there’s just enough variety here, combined with the slick 3D graphics and comic panel cutaways, to suggest that most Spidey fans will come away satisfied after having devoted an afternoon or evening to playing through the game.

You play half the game as Spidey and the other half as Green Goblin.

A good portion of each level involves the usual beat-’em-up flavor. Spider-Man and Green Goblin can jump and climb over hazards, punch and kick the enemies they encounter, and use their powers to shoot webbing or fireballs at any enemies that are especially tough. Each character also has four different super attacks that can be unleashed to take out one or more enemies in a single blow. Boss fights that occur at the end of each level provide a change of pace from beating up weak enemies, particularly when Spidey and Goblin cross paths. Nevertheless, despite the fact that it’s sweet to be able to control Spider-Man and Green Goblin, beating up on cookie-cutter enemies becomes boring pretty much within the first five minutes. They all have the same limited attack patterns, which means you’ll resort to taking them out the same way every time.

Thankfully, most levels are designed so that you’ll have to put the two characters’ unique abilities to use doing something other than bashing armed thugs. As Spider-Man, you can webswing, scale buildings, and use your webbing to repair objects in the environment. Thus, you’ll frequently find yourself swinging over hazards, lifting cars off of people, and carrying people to safety. As the Green Goblin, you have super strength, can conjure fireballs, and can also climb buildings. His levels typically involve smashing and setting fire to key areas in the environment, as well as climbing out of maximum-security prisons. Also, while you’re going about your business as Spidey or Goblin, a brief minigame will occasionally appear on the touch screen. They’re just simple tasks that require you to use the stylus or your finger to lift up cars, draw giant webs, or disarm certain enemies. The nice thing about these minigames is that they add more variety to the game without distracting you too much from the normal button-based controls.

It also helps that the presentation is slick and serves up numerous «whoa» moments. The levels are side-scrolling, but instead of being rendered as 2D sprites and backdrops, all of the characters and environments are rendered in 3D. Spider-Man, Goblin, and the other characters have a healthy repertoire of moves and are gracefully animated, and thanks to a modest implementation of cel-shading, they look like they were ripped right out of an Ultimates comic book. Meanwhile, the environments are full of depth and show that the DS can produce 3D graphics that aren’t rough and jagged. Everything here is crisp and full of detail. The gameworld also absolutely jumps out of the screen, thanks to liberal use of rotation and scaling effects. Audio consists of the usual sort of mood music and superhero sound effects, but there’s also a good smattering of voice comments and environmental atmosphere. The quality of these digitized samples is superb. For example, a fire sounds like a raging inferno coming out of the system’s speakers. Comic fans are also likely to be impressed by the cutaways that appear between levels. These scenes are put together with hand-drawn comic book panels that feature nicely animated details and slick transitions between the two screens. These also include line after line of recorded dialogue that was read by people who were clearly making an effort to turn in believable, natural performances. It’s as if the pages of an Ultimate Spider-Man comic book have come to life on the Nintendo DS.

Among the various boss encounters, Spider-Man and Green Goblin face off on occasion.

The game’s biggest shortcoming is that the end comes too soon. You’ll probably need to make two or three attempts to complete some levels, but even with that extra effort taken into account, most people will finish the game in about four hours. There aren’t any substantial bonuses to speak of in the game. There also isn’t any sort of multiplayer or co-op mode, which is a shame when you consider that beat-’em-ups are much more fun to replay when a friend is able to join you.

Chances are that if you even remotely like the Spider-Man character, you’ll find a great deal to smile about during the brief span that it takes to finish the game. While Spider-Man: Battle for New York for the Nintendo DS isn’t particularly original or lengthy, it does deliver enough variety and panache to make the experience worthwhile.

Содержание

Сама по себе игра представляет линейное прохождение из пункта A в пункт B. Игра за Человека-паука практически полностью идентична Ultimate Spider-Man. Игроку предстоит спасать случайных прохожих, ловить мелких преступников, а также участвовать в нескольких мини-играх. В роли Зелёного гоблина игроку предстоит уничтожать простых полицейских и агентов Щ.И.Т.а. В игре за Гоблина мини-игры отсутствуют.

Узнав тайну личности Человека-паука и то как он получил свои супер-способности, Норман Озборн решает поставить эксперимент на человеке: он вводит сыворотку ОЗ самому себе. В результате он получает сверхчеловеческие полномочия, однако, вместе с тем, превращается в монстра Зелёного гоблина. Убеждённый в успехе своего эксперимента, Озборн используют свою формулу на других людях, создавая армию гоблинов. Человек-паук должен выяснить, что происходит и положить конец планам Зелёного гоблина.

Spider-Man: Battle for New York Review

Cruddy hit detection and poor hazard placement ruin this otherwise decent action romp.

It’s amazing how one or two problems can totally ruin an otherwise decent game. The Game Boy Advance version of Spider-Man: Battle for New York wouldn’t have won any praise for originality or for its audiovisual presentation, but it would have been a solid action romp, if only the hit detection weren’t so broken and enemies weren’t placed in surprise spots that make cheap damage the norm. For every moment you’ll spend punching thugs and swinging through the air, you’ll spend equal time being knocked back by hazards that aren’t even close, being attacked by enemies you can’t even see, and watching your attacks whiff.

You can play through some levels as Spider-Man and others as Green Goblin.

The overall design is solid, if unoriginal. You’ll spend roughly half of the game’s approximately 30 side-scrolling levels controlling Spider-Man and the other half controlling his nemesis, the Green Goblin. Goblin’s levels focus on trashing the environment and beating up on S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, while Spidey’s levels are more oriented around putting out fires and rescuing people. The two characters are also vastly different in what they’re able to do. Spidey doesn’t dole out a ton of damage or have much health, but he can use his webbing to trap enemies and swing through the air. Goblin, meanwhile, isn’t very quick or agile, but he’s built like a tank, his attacks are strong, and he can hurl explosive fireballs. Each level generally does a good job of balancing fisticuffs and exploration. While there’s a fair amount of beating on cookie-cutter enemies, there’s also a good amount of exploration, usually in the form of swinging between buildings, climbing up walls, and smashing through steel doors.

Unfortunately, no matter how much skill you develop, getting through the levels is nearly impossible. First off, the hit detection is unreliable, and the hit zones for some hazards are too big. Punches and fireballs frequently pass through enemies, and when you try to jump over a bullet or swing over the top of a flaming pile of rubble, you’ll take damage even if the hazard didn’t come close to touching your character. To make matters worse, enemies and turrets are frequently positioned in spots whre you can’t see them until you’re right on top of them. Sometimes, a ball of energy will come flying toward you and warn you that there’s an enemy lurking nearby. Many times, though, you’ll end up face-to-face with something dangerous and have only a split second to react. As it is, the levels are loaded with hazards, and the game is set up such that you have to restart a level from the beginning when you run out of health. That’s enough challenge to acclimate to without the broken hit detection and cruel hazard placement ratcheting up the frustration tenfold.

Attacks often pass through enemies, and you’ll frequently take damage from hazards that aren’t actually touching your character.

Adding a little insult to injury, the graphics and audio don’t live up to the standards that were set by previous Spidey games on the GBA. A limited range of colors were used to paint the backgrounds and characters, probably to emulate the look of a comic book, but the result is that everything appears washed out and devoid of detail. Spider-Man and Green Goblin have a healthy variety of moves and animate fluidly, but enemies mainly just walk around and raise their weapons in robotic fashion. There’s also not much happening in the background, apart from the occasional mound of fire or dangling electrical wire. The accompanying audio is similarly bland. Music and sound effects fit the action, but the music loops constantly, and the same few generic sound effects are heard over and over again. In some previous Spider-Man games, Spidey would yell out «yeah,» or civilians would voice a brief thank-you when he rescued them. Those recorded speech comments helped inject some life into the goings-on. In this game, there’s not a peep to be heard from Spider-Man or the citizens of New York.

When people shell out money for a Spider-Man game, they expect to bring home something that pleases the senses and can be played without incurring too much frustration. The GBA may not be a powerhouse with regard to hardware horsepower, but that doesn’t fully explain why Spider-Man: Battle for New York looks and sounds as apathetic as it does. Worst of all, though, the crummy hit detection and poor placement of hazards transform what would otherwise be a straightforward action romp into minute after minute of cheap hits and unfair deaths.

Gameplay

Spider-Man: Spidey’s game play is almost identical to what it was in Ultimate Spider-Man, whereby he has to go around and save any civilians that are in trouble, beating up the bad guys and (in the Nintendo DS version) taking part within 3 touch screen mini-games: The stroke game, the web draw and the arm/disarm games.

The Goblin: The Green Goblins game play is slightly different. Unlike Venom who could be controlled via the touch screen, the Goblin is controlled with the d-pad and face buttons only. His game play involves destroying objects and beating up security guards & S.H.I.E.L.D agents. The Goblin does not take part in any touch screen mini-games.

Both characters: Exclusive to the DS version, both Spider-Man & Goblin have access to 4 special moves which appear on the bottom screen, landing hits on opponents increases a special meter that, once full, will allow you to use one of the 4 moves available.

The player will also have to keep an eye out for the Threat Assessment Meter (or TAM for short), when it appears, it will point towards where Spidey & Goblin have to go next and also tells you how much time left they have to solve the problem. If they fail to sort out the problem when the TAM meter runs out, it’ll be game over.

Upgrades & Unlockables

On completion of certain levels, Spider-Man and Green Goblin will be able to upgrade their stats, which include: More health, stronger attacks, increased ammo (Web fluid & fireballs) and increased web tie duration/fireball damage. You will also be able to unlock more special moves on the touch screen (DS version). While only one move is available at first, you can unlock the other three as you progress through the game.

Spider-Man’s special moves:
Web Whip – Mid range attack (Available at start)
Mega Thump – Clear out attack
Rolling Thunder – Tumbling attack
Adrenaline Rush – Super speed attack

The Goblin’s special moves:
Fiery Uppercut – Mid range attack (Available at start)
Ground Pound – Clear out attack
Inferno – Clear out attack
Fiery Aura – Goblin is shielded in fire and does damage to anything he touches.

Spider-Man: Battle for New York Review

Your friendly neighborhood mediocre licensed action game.

Based on characters and plot elements from the Ultimate Spider-Man universe, the game pits Spider-Man against a Hulk-like version of Norman Osborne (aka the Green Goblin). The two rampage the town looking for one another, swapping the player’s control between both characters in a less-successful recreation of what was done with Venom in last year’s Ultimate Spider-Man games. Design-wise, this game is similar to previous installments, with Spider-Man pounding punk after punk in buildings, alleyways and half-constructed high-rises.

Combat is pretty weak in this game, though. Although both Spider-Man and Goblin have a decent number of moves, their attacks don’t connect well and result in plenty of cheap shots from the enemies. Both playable characters inch forward as they attack, which causes the player to eventually overlap the enemy and stop actually hitting them. Enemies seem to have no problem connecting punches during these moments, though. The game also allows enemies to aim in multiple directions and attack from offscreen, making level progression more about luck than skill. Enemies can be killed by environmental hazards like fire and electricity, which is fun to watch but it makes collecting the powerups they drop a real pain.
Spider-Man can punch, kick, web-sling and wall-crawl just as expected. A few times I noticed a delay between landing and being able to throw a punch, which let enemies get in a few more cheap shots. Goblin’s melee attacks are a joke. His basic punch doesn’t extend nearly as far as enemy punches do. It’s unbalanced, unfair and forces the player to rely almost entirely on his fireball projectile attack to make it through each level.

Between levels, the player is given points to upgrade their character’s stats. This increases health, attack damage, web strength and so on, although the difference between a standard and leveled-up attack is barely noticeable.

In between beatings, the player needs to find and take out triggers in order to shut down electric barriers and move on. This draws attention away from the flawed combat, but hitting switches is so one-note that by the third level all fun has been drained from the exercise. Whether it’s a security camera, a generator or a switch, locating an object and punching it gets boring fast. The developers added a small arrow icon to indicate where the next target is, which is the only reason I was able to make it through this maze-like game without tearing my hair out.

What really sucks is just how rarely Spider-Man’s web abilities are required. Giant fans in ventilation shafts that have to be webbed to pass are cool, and there’s a decent amount of wall-crawling but beyond that there’s not much here that’s Spider-Man specific.

There’s zero enemy variation in this game, just a whole lot of generic punks and some occasional odd ghost creatures. Boss battles are pretty awful and not remotely creative. Most bosses can either be rushed (Goblin) or exploited (Silver Sable, who can be cornered on the ceiling and beaten until her health is nearly gone). Judging from the gameplay, I don’t understand why Generic Punk #12 isn’t leading The Kingpin, since the punk at least knows how to get a few cheap shots in on Spider-Man.

In regard to graphics, the sprites seem to be pre-rendered off cell-shaded 3D characters and actually look pretty fantastic. Animation, especially in the heroes is super-smooth and lacks that stiff, robotic movement usually associated with pre-rendered sprites. Enemies and minor characters are less memorable, and some enemies just make no sense (like the floating ghosts that weep loudly when beaten). As unmemorable as these characters are though, Spider-Man himself has never looked or animated better.

Unfortunately, sprites are the only in-game art with any polish. Backgrounds are bland and look incredibly fake. Most of the background art (especially distant buildings) is flat and boring. The level designers did an awful job throughout the game; buildings are constructed so randomly that no gamer could believe they actually function. Floors don’t line up, platforms are oddly placed and ventilation shafts run all over the place.

But the greatest sin in this game was in grounding Spider-Man. The webslinger has to constantly refill an annoying web meter in order to shoot webs at badguys and wrap them up for a beatdown. In an idiotic decision, Spider-Man’s web-swinging is also tied to this meter. This means that the player can swing about five times before the meter is completely drained and they fall from the sky. The player then has to wait or look for web meter powerups before taking off again. Lame! The developers took the one really fun Spider-Man gameplay mechanic and practically removed it from this game. And since most levels are indoors and cramped, even when the web meter is maxed out there isn’t much opportunity for swinging around.

Menus are pretty plain, but they get the job done. The player can revisit any cutscene or level from the menu later to replay it. What goes above and beyond standard GBA fare are the cut scenes. Illustrated by comics artist Ron Lim, the cinemas are filled with quality, full-color art that’s honestly more enjoyable than the game itself. The story may be a little confusing to Spider-Man fans unfamiliar with the Ultimate line of comics, but each scene is still a visual treat. Sound is pretty bland throughout and the same couple of songs play over and over. The cutscenes are completely silent for some reason.

Spider-Man: Battle for New York is a Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS game loosely based within the Ultimate Spider-Man universe. It features Spider-Man and the Green Goblin as the main characters. The Green Goblin is a playable character, like Venom is in another Spider-Man game, Ultimate Spider-Man. The cutscenes in this game are drawn by Marvel Comics artist Ron Lim.

After finding out Spider-Man’s true identity and how he gained his super powers, Norman Osborn tries to recreate the process on himself, thinking that his superior knowledge and access to his ‘Oz Formula’ would get a better result. He then turns himself into the Green Goblin (with a few side effects). Thinking his experiment to be a success, he then starts to use his formula on other people, creating a goblin army. It’s now up to Spider-Man to figure out what’s going on and put a stop to the Goblin’s plans before he can take over New York.

Gameplay

Spider-Man: Spidey’s game play is almost identical to what it was in Ultimate Spider-Man, whereby he has to go around and save any civilians that are in trouble, beating up the bad guys and (in the Nintendo DS version) taking part within 3 touch screen mini-games: The stroke game, the web draw and the arm/disarm games.

The Goblin: The Green Goblins game play is slightly different. Unlike Venom who could be controlled via the touch screen, the Goblin is controlled with the d-pad and face buttons only. His game play involves destroying objects and beating up security guards & S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. The Goblin does not take part in any touch screen mini-games.

Both characters: Exclusive to the DS version, both Spider-Man & Goblin have access to 4 special moves which appear on the bottom screen, landing hits on opponents increases a special meter that, once full, will allow you to use one of the 4 moves available.

The player will also have to keep an eye out for the Threat Assessment Meter (or TAM for short), when it appears, it will point towards where Spidey & Goblin have to go next and also tells you how much time left they have to solve the problem. If they fail to sort out the problem when the TAM meter runs out, it’ll be game over.

Upgrades & Unlockables

On completion of certain levels, Spider-Man and Green Goblin will be able to upgrade their stats, which include: More health, stronger attacks, increased ammo (Web fluid & fireballs) and increased web tie duration/fireball damage. You will also be able to unlock more special moves on the touch screen (DS version). While only one move is available at first, you can unlock the other three as you progress through the game.

Spider-Man’s special moves:
Web Whip – Mid range attack (Available at start)
Mega Thump – Clear out attack
Rolling Thunder – Tumbling attack
Adrenaline Rush – Super speed attack

The Goblin’s special moves:
Fiery Uppercut – Mid range attack (Available at start)
Ground Pound – Clear out attack
Inferno – Clear out attack
Fiery Aura – Goblin is shielded in fire and does damage to anything he touches.

Долгожданный Человек-паук от Insomniac Games уже на подходе, и, вероятнее всего, он будет удивительным. Про Человека-паука было довольно много игр в формате 2D. Некоторые из них очень хороши, как, например, аркада Spider-Man: The Video Game, но данная игра таковой точно не была. Это, конечно, не самая ужасная игра в этом списке, но она очень скучна.

Как бы то не казалось, The Amazing Spider-Man – это больше головоломка, нежели « beat-em-up». Главной проблемой игры было то, что она медленная. Точнее, очень медленная. With the Spider-Man 3 trailer causing the masses to count the days until the movie’s May 2007 release, Activision is offering up a little something to tide fans over in the form of a new DS title starring everyone’s favorite web-head. Spider-Man: Battle for New York is an original title from Torus Games that lets you play as Spidey or his archnemesis the Green Goblin. Your battleground is—surprise!—the city of New York. We had the chance to check out a work-in-progress version of the game, which is set to debut at Comic-Con this week, to just how that’s going to work out.

The Green Goblin’s back to terrorizing the Big Apple, and only ol’ Spidey can stop him.

The game’s story, which plays out via narrated stills that cycle on both the DS’s screens, finds the Goblin escaping from S.H.I.E.L.D. custody. Obviously hurting some for finances, he hooks up with the Kingpin, who’s awash in cash, resources, and clearly better lawyers. The evil duo hatches a plan to turn the city’s gang members into superhuman, Oz-enhanced soldiers. Your mission as Spidey is to stop them, while your goal as the Goblin is to create chaos and mayhem and take out Spider-Man. It’s all very «yin-yang,» and it’s a prime setup for a game.

The demo of the game featured a single-player level featuring Spidey. Your goal is to infiltrate a warehouse. Your task is complicated by the high volume of thugs making the rounds, as well as by security cameras. Thankfully, Spidey’s natural strength, enhanced reflexes, and wallcrawling abilities, combined with his webshooters, come in very handy. You’re able to maintain a low profile by staying out of sight and using your webs to get above the mounted cameras so you can destroy them. If you’re spotted by the cameras, thugs will be dispatched to take you out. However, when discovered, you’ll have a good array of combat moves to deal with your foes. Your webbing will also come in handy, as you can use it to get in close to lay down some smack, which is especially useful when dealing with gun-toting thugs.

Control was good and tight and offered a solid array of options. You move with the D pad, punch with A, kick with Y, jump with B, dodge with the L button, and shoot your webs with R. In addition, you’ll have a number of enhanced webslinging abilities that will let you make like a spider. A webzip will let you zip to a set location quickly. A webswing is your standard web-powered locomotion. Capture webbing lets you fire web balls that temporarily immobilize your foes by encasing them in a cocoon. Finally, web yank lets you pull in foes or objects to you very quickly. One element of the game that wasn’t fully implemented yet was Spidey’s supermoves, which you’ll access via the DS touch screen in battle.

Battle for New York’s visuals pick up where Ultimate Spider-Man on the DS left off and mix 3D visuals with a 2D perspective and gameplay. Spidey is looking good thanks to smooth animation and a modest amount of detail. The thugs we came across in the level were your garden-variety thugs that are a bit repetitive but move well. The warehouse environment was heavy on the large boxes and containers and offered ample opportunities for wallcrawling, webslinging, and butt-kicking.

The audio wasn’t fully implemented but covered all the important bases for a demo. There was already a fair amount of sound effects for all the key actions and events. The big thing about the sound in the game is the copious amount of spoken audio. Spidey and company are a talkative bunch, and sound quite good.

Based on what we saw of the demo level, we’re anxious to see more of Spider-Man: Battle for New York. The game looks promising and has a good feel already. The chance to wreak some havoc as the Green Goblin is something we’re especially hankering to try. Spidey fans—and anyone looking for a good action game for the DS—will want to keep track of how Spider-Man: Battle for New York progresses, as there’s a lot of potential to be realized here. Spider-Man: Battle for New York is currently slated to ship this fall for the Nintendo DS. Look for more on the game in the coming months.

Furia del Duende (1 y 2)

Tras el accidente que le proporcionó a Peter Parker los poderes arácnidos, Norman Osbron trata de recrear el experimento pero a rasgos mayores. Inyectándose la droga «OZ», Osborn se transformó en el Duende Verde. Tras unas visiones donde unos fantasmas comparándolo con Parker, el Duende escapa dirigiéndose al Instituto Midtown (donde estudia Peter). Tras incendiar varios mecheros y romper algunos pilares se provoca un incendio.

El chico nuevo de la clase (1 y 2)

Traa una rápida evacuación (aunque algunas personas quedaron atrapadas), Peter se aleja de la multitud para vestirse como Spider-Man y salvar a los atrapados.

Batalla en el puente

Al encontrarse cara a cara con el Duende Verde, Spider-Man es atacado por este. Para evitar dañar a las personas, Spidey lleva la pelea al Puente Brooklyn. Tras un duro enfrentamiento (en el cual interviene el NYPD), Osborn cae a las aguas. Luego de retirarse de la escena la Policía y Spider-Man, agentes de S.H.I.E.L.D. sacan al Duende del río y lo llevan a los cuarteles generales en Triskelion.

Malvado fugitivo verde (1 y 2)

En medio de un interrogatorio a Osborn por parte de Nick Fury, el primero escapa de la prisión.

Rescate en Chinatown

Un misterioso disturbio en Chinatown hace que Spider-Man se driga ahí. Tras vencer algunos matones y rescatar algunos ciudadanos, Spidey va al centro del problema: un simio mutante verde.

Un mono en Chinatown

Tras derrotar al Simio, Spidey se da cuenta que era una parsona que mutaba a esa forma, pero no puede averiguar más ya que SHEILD llega a la escena.

Torres Fisk (1 y 2)

Tras pedirles unos consejos a Ben Urich (un reportero del Daily Bugle), Spider-Man se dirige a las Torres Fisk para averiguar si la banda de matones tenía alguna relación con Wilson Fisk (alias: Kingpin, el rey del crimen). Tras desactivar las cámaras, Spider-Man llega a la oficina de Kingpin, pero se encuentra con alguien totalmente diferente.

Un montón de arañas

Sable Plateado se enfrenta a Spidey, junto con sus minas-arañas, unos robots arácnidos que explotan al tocarlos. Pero una chica con un traje plateado y un montón de araañas no logran vencer a Spider-Man.

Edificio C, Calle 30 Oeste (1 y 2)

Tras vencer a Sable Plateado, Kingpin se presenta en su oficina y atrapa a Spider-Man desprevenido. Spidey logra escapar y consigo se lleva unos papeles que le indican que puede seguir un rastro de los hombres-super-desarrollados de Kingpin ahí. Spider-Man se dirige a la Calle 30 del Oeste y entra en el Edificio C. Luego de acabar a todos los matones, Spider-Man ve que una misteriosa silueta huye por una puerta. Spidey estaba por averiguar quién era cuando llega Nick Fury junto a S.H.I.E.L.D. Nick le cuenta que esa misteriosa silueta era Osborn y que había escapado de Triskelion. También le informa de que Osborn está tras él. Por si Osborn trata de atraparlo, Fury le da un rastreador.

Armas biológicas en Brooklyn

Spider-Man vuelve a visitar a Ben Urich y este le da una información sobre unas armas biológicas que se encuentran el Brooklyn. Tras colocar unas cámaras para tener pruebas contra Osborn, Spidey se dirige a un cuarto muy extraño

Secretos Siniestros

Spidey se encuentra con un montón de matones transformados en ese cuarto y se enfrenta con ellos. Luego de vencerlos, Spider-Man revisa en una computadora y se da cuenta que esos matones son de Kingpin. El arácnido entra a la oficina de Kingpin, pero Fisk prefiere encargarse de Spidey por el mismo.

Entrevista con Kingpin

Kigpin hace frenta a Spider-Man con todos sus matones, pero Spidey lo logra vencer. Tras dejar a Fisk tras una telaraña, Spidey le cuenta que Osborn está haciendo experimentos con su gente.

Daño colateral

Tras llegar a su edificio en Brooklyn y ver que Spider-Man ha reducido a sus matones, el Duende Verde coloca bombas para no dejar ninguna prueba de sus experimentos.

Paseo por Manhattan (1 y 2)

Tras percatarse que la fórmula OZ le está quitando el jucio, Osborn se dirige a sus laboratorios en Manhattan para poder neutralizar los efectos de la fórmula OZ. Al llegar a la oficina del edificio se encuentra con Sable Plateado.

Negocios

Luego de un duro enfrentamiento, Osborn le da una paliza a Sable.

El Ejército de los Monstruos

Spider-Man llega al lugar donde Sable se enfrentó a Osborn, pero solo encuentra a unos matones para su bienvenida. Tras derrotarlos se encuentra con el Duende Verde

Batalla campal

Tras encontrarse con Parker en donde se enfrentó con Sable, el Duende se ve cara a cara con Kingpin.

Huida nocturna

El Duende estaba a punto de tirar a Fisk por el borde del edificio cuando llega S.H.I.E.L.D. y empieza a perseguirlo.

Buscar al Duende

Tras consultar con Ben Urich, Spidey ve si puede seguir la pista de Osborn en un distito de almacenes que figuraban bajo un nombre falso. Tras noquear algunos matones, Spider-Man se encuentra con Osborn en uno de los laboratorios.

Baterías no incluidas

Osborn estaba preparando un nuevo monstruo con poderes eléctricos y antes de soltarlo para que peleara con Spider-Man, Osbron le avisó al arácnido que iría a enfrentarse con Fury. Luego de noquear al matón-eléctrico, Spider-Man se dirigie a avisarle a Fury de los planes del Duende.

Asalto a S.H.I.E.L.D. (1 y 2)

Al llegar al Helicarrier de S.H.I.E.L.D., Osborn coloca bombas, también acaba con varios agentes para poder llegar al nivel superior, a un paso de Fury.

Las armas de Fury

Al penetrar el niver superior, Nick decide hacerse cargo de Osborn personalmente, usando sus torrentes de plasma teledirigidos. Tal armamento no bastó por lo que el Duende logró derribar el Helicarrier.

Cazar al Duende

Spider-Man llega a las ruinas del Helicarrier, donde Nick Fury le dice que el Duende sigue adentro y que lo busque. Pero el camina hasta el Duende se le hace difícil con la intromisión de varios matones.

El útimo capítulo

Spider-Man se enfrenta al Duende en una batalla mortal, pero para peor, Osborn se ha fortalecido. Tras una dura lucha, el Duende cae y se da cuenta que se está desmutando, su fórmula ha fallado. Luego de que Norman fuera sacado de la escena por agentes de S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury felicita a Spider-Man por su labor. Para sorpresa, los Ultimates han arribado a ayudar. El Capitán América le ordena a Peter que descanse y, una orden es una orden.

Marvel’s Spider-Man на ПК. Что скрывали от нас сони-бои?

Наконец, я, как и многие пользователи ПК, ознакомился с лучшим, как считают многие, интерактивным воплощением Человека-Паука. Заслуживает ли игра всех этих регалий, или это просто незаслуженно обласканный фанатами бывший эксклюзив? Для себя я уже сделал выводы и готов поделиться ими с вами!

Начинаем с козырей

Для начала разберёмся с основными активностями. Когда перед игроком предстает дивный открытый мир, раскачиваясь на паутине и маневрируя между зданиями, игрок стремиться выполнить своё первое задание. И, пожалуй, эти самые полёты на паутине, являются лучшим аспектом игры. Интуитивно понятное и простое управление паутинным полётом, беготня по стенам, пикирование, раскачка и отталкивание от зданий, способно заставить залипнуть тебя в игре на лишние несколько часов.

Marvel’s Сюжет

А это означает, что приписка «Marvel’s» в заголовке игры отрабатывает на все 100%. Для кого-то это хорошо, для тех, кто старше 15-ти уже не очень. Лично я, ближе к концу, старался поскорее пропустить каждую кат-сцену, которая старается заставить игроков сопереживать главным героям. Литр масла в огонь подливает и отечественный дубляж, который будто вырезан из мультсериала о паучке 1994-го года.

Когда шедевр разваливается

Вспоминая более негативные вещи, на ум сразу же приходят стелс миссии, играть в которых нам предстоит за друзей паука. Эти «миссии» мало того, что не дают игрокам почти нечего в сюжетном плане, так и невероятно затормаживают темп повествования. Если вдруг я устану от бесконечных боёв, я найду чем себя занять, поверьте. Как минимум, полечу фоткать здание парламента. Кстати, и за паучка, стелс фрагментов хватает, назову это «боевой стелс». Ненапряжный и не тормозящий игрока процесс, который заставит игрока любоваться каждым очередным бандитом, приклеенным к фонарному столбу. Как минимум, это гораздо интереснее, чем смотреть на то, как Мэри Джейн нарезает круги вокруг очередной кучи коробок.

Рядом со стелсом, на скамейке позора расположились мини-игры. Которые также глубоко внедрены в множество сюжетных миссий. Представьте, что минуту назад вы сражались с десятками ожесточённых врагов, а уже сейчас вы пытаетесь подставить палочку в нужную ячейку, или вовсе сыграть в «водопроводчика», стараясь направить электрический ток из одного угла в другой. Такая деятельность не только ставит под сомнение гений Питера Паркера, а ещё и в очередной раз просаживает динамику.

Может быть, в комментариях мне кто-нибудь объяснит, зачем так тупо растягивать игровой процесс? Если бы полное прохождение заняло на 5 часов меньше, и было бы лишено такого бестолкового стелса и перегонки напряжения, стала бы игра хуже?

2006 was one of the strange years when Activision took a year off from making a Spider-Man console game, more than likely due to the fact that it had both Spider-Man 3, which debuted on over a half a dozen different platforms, and Spider-Man: Friend or Foe each set to be released in 2007. Just because a new Spider-Man game wasn’t released on consoles didn’t mean the character got to take it easy though, as another handheld title set in the Ultimate Marvel Universe, Spider-Man: Battle for New York, arrived in 2006. Since the release of the GBA all handheld Spider-Man games were handled by Vicarious Visions but for this outing, development duty fell on Torus Games, makers of my favourite Iron Man game, The Invincible Iron Man, for the GBA. Though the studio did show promise with the Marvel license in their Iron Man game, Torus Games’ Battle for New York is of the most forgettable Spider-Man games to date, even with the help of the technology that made Ultimate Spider-Man.

Battle for New York looks nearly identical to Ultimate Spider-Man, but looks they say, can be very deceiving.

While it came out after Ultimate Spider-Man and is set in the same universe, Spider-Man: Battle for New York is not a sequel to that game. Its story initially starts out with a loose retelling of the Ultimate Green Goblin origin from the first six-issues of Ultimate Spider-Man before it moves into a plot about Norman Osborn teaming up with the Kingpin to create a goblin army to overtake New York. Whereas the game that came before it felt like a true product of the Ultimate universe with its plot written by Brian Micheal Bendis and its art direction inspired by Mark Bagley, the only way you would know that Battle for New York is set in the same universe is because of the use of Ultimate Green Goblin, an African-American Nick Fury and a very brief cameo by the Ultimates. Similar to Ultimate Spider-Man it uses still images as cut-scenes to tell its story between levels, but the art is overly generic, lacking any real polish or detail and Spider-Man looks far too big and adult like at a time when he’s supposed to be a teenager. A plus is that the game does include voice acting from some pretty exceptional talent over those images including James Arnold Taylor, who voiced Harry Osborn on The Spectacular Spider-Man, as Spider-Man and Dave Fennoy, who you might remember as Lee from Telltale’s The Walking Dead, as Nick Fury, the only linking connection between this and Ultimate Spider-Man as he also voiced Nick Fury in that game.

Battle for New York’s story doesn’t set it up as a sequel to Ultimate Spider-Man, but in playing the game it feels like a poor expansion to 2005’s DS game. The graphics look identical and the game plays exactly the same with the same level objectives: fight some bad guys and save some citizens. Torus tried to make their mark on the formula by throwing in a lot more DS specific features other than swiping the touch screen to lift a pillar or car off of a trapped pedestrian but they’re very poorly implemented into the game and overdone. One is not too bad and just has you tapping on dots as they change colour to deactivate a machine, but another is absolutely pointless and frustrating. Enemies will continue to spawn through doors until you web them up and how you do this is connecting dots on a web on the bottom screen, however you’re expected to do this while enemies are attacking you and the game often doesn’t track easily you connecting a line from one point to another. You do have the ability to snare enemies in your web, but they break out before you can finish the mini-game. Luckily for a lot of these you can just ignore them as they are never required to be closed to complete a level and it makes you wonder why they were bothered to put in the game in the first place.

The first boss, also known as the point you realize the boss fights are incredibly broken.

Ultimate Spider-Man had its fair share of bosses but the bunch assembled here are pitiful. You have the Green Goblin and the Kingpin who are formidable foes and well-known members of Spider-Man’s rogues gallery, but outside of those two you only have Silver Sable who you fought in Ultimate Spider-Man, and..the…Simian? The boss fights are not only few in number, but they’re also made frustrating by terrible collision detection. When fighting normal stage enemies Battle for New York feels just as good as Ultimate Spider-Man, but when going up against the game’s bosses it feels like you throw too many punches and kicks before one connects. I died too many times at the first fight and eventually had to restart the game and allocate all of my experience points from beating the level before hand into my attack power to stand a chance, and this was only the first boss!

Venom shared the spotlight with Spider-Man in the previous game and Battle of New York has its own version of the heavy character in Green Goblin. Other than being much bigger and bulkier than the main playable character, the Goblin has the ability to throw fireballs in three different varieties which can be alternated: a small fireball, a three-directional attack and a larger, deadlier projectile. Using Goblin’s pyrokinesis depletes an ammunition bar with the attacks consuming more of your meter at higher levels so it’s normally best to stick with your lower level first fireball. Should you run out of power to use your projectile you can replenish it with power-ups obtained by beating enemies and you’ll want to manage this meter as best as you can as Green Goblin’s melee attack feels weak and unsatisfying. Compared to Venom who had puzzles and situations that used the character like using his tentacles to flip distant switches or picking up enemies with his appendages, Green Goblin feels like a wasted opportunity as they never use his powers for anything clever. The only puzzles you’ll encounter, if you can even call them that, involve you lighting beakers from a distance with your fireballs.

Spider-Man: Battle for New York uses the same technology that made Ultimate Spider-Man but just because it has the guts of that game doesn’t mean it has that games heart. Other than a few misplaced touch screen gimmicks this game is a poor rehash of a game released a mere year before it with worse collision detection and a lack of interesting bosses. The focus of the story on Green Goblin and even including him as a secondary playable character is a nice addition, but the game doesn’t really do anything interesting with the character other than the brief rehash of what people already experienced in the pages of the Ultimate Spider-Man comic books. Those looking for a worthy follow-up to Ultimate Spider-Man on the DS will find themselves quite disappointed with Battle for New York.

Gameplay

Peter Parker/Spider-Man is the eponymous protagonist. Spidey’s game play is almost identical to that of its predecessor, whereby he has to go around and save any civilians that are in trouble, engage in combat with thugs and (in the Nintendo DS version) take part in 3 touch screen mini-games: The stroke game, the web draw and the arm/disarm games.

Noman Osborn/Green Goblin is the main antagonist and a playable character. Green Goblin’s game play is slightly different. Unlike Venom who could be controlled via the touch screen, the Goblin is controlled with the d-pad and face buttons only. His game play involves destroying objects and fighting security guards & S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. The Goblin does not take part in any touch screen mini-games.

Exclusive to the DS version, both Spider-Man & Goblin have access to 4 special moves which appear on the bottom screen, landing hits on opponents increases a special meter that, once full, will allow them to use one of the 4 moves available.

The player will also have to keep an eye out for the Threat Assessment Meter (or TAM for short); when it appears, it will point towards where Spidey & Goblin have to go next and also tell the player how much time left they have to solve the problem. If they fail to sort out the problem when the TAM meter runs out, it’ll be game over.
