Увлажнение — это базовая составляющая ухода за кожей любого типа и возраста. Для себя я уже давно определила, что именно увлажняющие средства должны быть основой ухода за кожей лица и тела, а вот специфические проблемы должны решаться узконаправленными продуктами (сюда идёт уход анти-эйдж, анти-акне, против пигментации и т.д). И если активные уходовые продукты зачастую стоят немало, то хорошее увлажнение можно найти и в бюджетном сегменте рынка. Сегодня хочу рассказать как раз о таком случае — увлажняющей линейке Hydro Boost американского бренда Neutrogena, из которой я попробовала сыворотку, кремы для лица и кожи вокруг глаз, а также крем для рук.

Первым я приобрела крем для рук, ибо с приходом осени кожа на кистях стала сохнуть так сильно, что в некоторых местах даже появились микротрещины. Вспомнив о том, как несколько лет назад крем именно этой марки помог моему брату с аналогичной проблемой (тогда у него руки аж до кровавых ран потрескались, а насыщенный густой крем снял всё буквально за неделю), я и отправилась в магазин. Аккурат тогда у нас активно промотировали новую серию Hydro Boost, в которой и был крем для рук.

Neutrogena — Hydro Boost Quenching Hand Gel Cream

Как понятно из названия, это гель-крем, который освежает и увлажняет кожу рук длительное время. Он обладает приятным свеже-сладковатым ароматом, а также лёгкой, но в то же время обволакивающей текстурой.

Крем действительно смягчает и увлажняет кожу рук. Я обычно наношу его на руки перед сном, а утром получаю мягкую, гладкую и совершенно не сухую кожу. За несколько использований прошли трещины и шелушения, которые меня изначально беспокоили.

Когда было холодно и кожа сохла нещадно, я использовала крем каждый день, потом перешла на режим 1-3 раза в неделю в зависимости от состояния кожи. Таким образом одной упаковки мне хватило на 4 месяца.

Увлажняющая сыворотка — один из моих любимейших видов уходовой косметики, потому я совершенно не сомневалась, что и эту стоит попробовать. Производитель обещает нам «супер-заряженный бустер» с гиалуроновой кислотой и витамином Е.

Продукт представляет собой прозрачную гелевую основу, в которой содержатся белые перламутровые капсулы (по принципу метеоритной базы Guerlain).

Смотреть на эту красоту можно вечно, по крайней мере, я залипаю над этими шариками каждый раз, когда беру флакон в руки.

При выдавливании шарики лопаются и перламутровые вкрапления хорошо видны в сыворотке.

Но после распределения на коже не остаётся никаких заметных блёсток, при этом появляется здоровое чуть влажное свечение. К счастью, эффект у сыворотки не только визуальный. Она сама по себе отлично увлажняет кожу, хорошо распределяется, быстро впитывается, является хорошой основой под макияж или последующий уход. Не конфликтует ни с одним средством используемым до или после неё. Обладает схожим ароматом с кремом: ощутимым, но не раздражающим.

Я с большим удовольствием пользовалась этим продуктом, нанося как минимум каждое утро, а иногда и вечером, если чувствовала, что кожа нуждается в дополнительном увлажнении. Крайне важным для меня моментом является ещё и то, что серум не забивает поры и не провоцирует высыпания, по крайней мере, у меня.

Средством осталась довольна, со временем наверняка повторю.

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel

На этот крем я сама вряд ли обратила бы внимание, но один популярный ютьюб блогер так его хвалил, называя полным аналогом увлажняющего геля Glamglow, что я сдалась. Честно говоря, посмотрев на состав, я не ждала совершенно ничего хорошего. Мне казалось, что это будет очередной замес воды с силиконом, делающий кожу гладкой на ощупь, но покрытой искусственной плёнкой, под которой моя кожа буквально задыхается.

Тем удивительнее было обнаружить в банке легчайший гель, который при контакте с кожей превращается практически в воду, увлажняя и разглаживая её. Силиконы здесь в очень умеренном количестве, тактильно практически не ощущаются. По моим субъективным впечатлениям, гель действительно увлажняет кожу, а не только делает видимость.

Использую его на ночь в те дни, когда не использую активный уход. Если бы в составе был спф, то можно было и днём, но увы. Потому утром у меня сыворотка + защита от солнца, а вечером (через день) — увлажняющий гель-крем. Опять же, приятный аромат, некомедогенность и умеренная цена делают его прекрасным средством для базового ухода, который можно повторять бесконечно.

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Eye Awakening Gel-Cream

Гель-крем для области вокруг глаз заказала исключительно за компанию. Честно говоря, мне чисто внешне не нравится упаковка, выглядит очень дешёво и примитивно, а я люблю, когда внешний вид косметики радует глаз. Тем не менее, сам крем мне понравился.

Опять же, состав доверия не внушал, ибо снова силиконы, да вода с глицерином. А по факту это приятнейший лёгкий увлажняющий гель-крем, который разглаживает «морщинки от сухости», не вызывает отёков и припухлостей, если использовать на ночь, а ещё на него здорово ложится любой консилер, даже довольно плотный и сухой.

Ну чем не здорово? Я вообще люблю, когда уход делает то, что обещает. Мне не нужен крем, который обещает гору всего, а даёт только лёгкое чувство увлажнённости. Гораздо больше удовлетворения приносят вот такие простые продукты, которые имеют одну задачу, но действительно с ней справляются. Видимо именно поэтому мне так понравились все средства из серии. Да, они просты, но они работают! И я вижу, что моей коже достаточно увлажнения и ухода, нету никакого чувства сухости или стянутости, нет негативных реакций в виде высыпаний или забитых пор, да и пользоваться этими продуктами просто приятно (не считая упаковки крема для глаз, которая мне чисто субъективно не нравится, но это уже мои заморочки). Крем для рук уже закончился, остатками сыворотки поделилась с подругой (к слову, ей тоже очень понравилась), а кремами продолжу пользоваться, пока не закончатся, а потом, скорее всего, повторю снова.

Для меня эта серия неожиданно стала заменой любимой линейке Yves Rocher Hydra Vegetal, которой я была верна годами. А вы пробовали что-то? У вас есть в продаже оффлайн? Знаю, что ещё для тела у них много всего из этой же серии, но у меня в запаснике и так много всего, потому не покупала, хотя руки чесались.

The unique gel-cream formula absorbs quickly, like a gel, but has the long-lasting, intense hydrating power of a cream, even for dry skin. Naturally found in the skin, hydrating hyaluronic acid acts as a sponge for dry skin cells, hydrating with up to 1,000 times its weight in water, resulting in more supple and smooth skin. Moisture locking Beeswax strengthens the skin barrier by forming a moisture locking protective shield.

HOW TO USE

For best results, apply to your face and leave on for 20-30 minutes after cleansing and before applying your serum to give your skin an extra boost of hydration.

1. Cleanse your face.

2. Peel the white backing film from the top mask sheet and place this side of the hydrogel mask onto face. Discard the white backing sheet. Repeat with the bottom mask sheet.

3. For an intense treatment, leave on for 20-30 minutes.

4. Remove the mask and massage remaining product into face and neck.

Finding a moisturizer for any skin type can be an uphill battle. While heavier creams can really lock in that much-needed hydration, many people want a moisturizer that will leave their skin soft and supple without feeling like a greasy mess.

Enter the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel. This popular moistruzier manages to have two highly coveted qualities in one—it’s both lightweight and hydrating. Like gels, its claims, the formula absorbs quickly. But thanks to ingredients like hyaluronic acid, it moisturizes like a cream. For those who are looking for something, they can apply before heading out for the day or wear comfortably under makeup, a formula that absorbs quickly like this one is a must.

In the morning I prefer something lighter though, which is where it was perfect to try out Neutrogena Hydro Boost. I used it every morning after a quick cleanse, and after applying Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 and vitamin C (and before sunscreen, on days I needed it).

Because I’m prone to breakouts, I kept a close eye on my skin to make sure nothing in the moisturizer would spur any irritation or spots.

The Feel: Super light—like literal water gel

Water gel is an apt description. Hydro Boost is nearly weightless in the hand and sinks into the skin quickly, although if I use too much I can feel it on my skin after it dries. Mostly though, the formula feels super light and the addition of dimethicones in the ingredients makes skin feel smooth.

I don’t normally mind a scent in my skincare products, but in this case, it was too overwhelming. Rather than a natural, botanical smell from the ingredients, the added fragrance was strong and smelled like perfume. Even after applying, the scent lingered. Their Hydro Boost Gel-Cream for extra dry skin, however, is fragrance-free.

Ingredients: Hydrates with hyaluronic acid

The star ingredient in Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel is hyaluronic acid (HA). HA works by attracting moisture—up to 1,000 times its weight in water—which not only plumps skin but hydrates it. In this case, it’s in the form of sodium hyaluronate, a derivative of HA, which can penetrate even deeper than pure HA.

Despite its lightness, it seems to soak into skin and hydrate it from the inside out.

Sodium hyaluronate can be used in concentrations of up to 2%, however, Neutrogena does not share the concentration of it in this particular product.

The Results: Lightweight hydration

Thanks to ingredients like dimethicone and HA my skin feels soft after using, but it doesn’t necessarily feel super hydrated like it can after I use heavier moisturizers (my current go-to is First Aid Beauty’s Ultra Repair Cream). But with that said, despite colder weather and declining humidity, Hydro Boost has kept my skin from becoming too dry, and I think that’s part of the magic of the formula—despite its lightness, it seems to soak into the skin and hydrate it from the inside out.

I wouldn’t recommend this moisturizer for those with severely dry skin or anyone looking for major hydration in colder or drier climates. But for summer weather or oily skin, I think this moisturizer is a solid choice to hydrate without being heavy. And, as in my case, it works well for those with normal skin looking for a morning hydrator that wears well under makeup.

I’m always wary that new products will break me out—especially with a fragrance as strong as this one—but even after a week of use, I didn’t have any new out of the ordinary acne. One reason for this might be how light the formula is. It’s oil-free and non-comedogenic, so it shouldn’t cause breakouts for most people.

The Value: Slightly overpriced

Similar Products: More affordable and powerful

Tatcha The Water Cream Travel Size ($20): For less than Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost—and the same amount of product—you can try out The Water Cream from Tatcha. It too has sodium hyaluronate, along with other extracts that boost skin circulation, balance skin, and improves the look of pores.

Honest Beauty Hydrogel Cream ($20): Again, for a more affordable alternative, Honest Beauty’s Hydrogel Cream gives you hydration with two types of hyaluronic acid. It also uses squalene (a moisturizer) and sodium PCA (another hydrator) to boost the skin’s hydration levels.

The Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel certainly isn’t a bad product, in fact, it does a good job of keeping skin hydrated with a lightweight formula. But when there are products with better ingredients—and better prices—it’s hard for me to all-out recommend this one. If it works for you, that’s great, but if it doesn’t, check out some of the recommended similar products.

Neutrogena hydro boost water gel

Good old water, aka H2O. The most common skincare ingredient of all. You can usually find it right in the very first spot of the ingredient list, meaning it’s the biggest thing out of all the stuff that makes up the product.

It’s mainly a solvent for ingredients that do not like to dissolve in oils but rather in water.

One more thing: the water used in cosmetics is purified and deionized (it means that almost all of the mineral ions inside it is removed). Like this, the products can stay more stable over time.

Probably the most common silicone of all. It is a polymer (created from repeating subunits) molecule and has different molecular weight and thus different viscosity versions from water-light to thick liquid.

As for skincare, it makes the skin silky smooth, creates a subtle gloss and forms a protective barrier (aka occlusive). Also, works well to fill in fine lines and wrinkles and give skin a plump look (of course that is only temporary, but still, it’s nice). There are also scar treatment gels out there using dimethicone as their base ingredient. It helps to soften scars and increase their elasticity.

As for hair care, it is a non-volatile silicone meaning that it stays on the hair rather than evaporates from it and smoothes the hair like no other thing. Depending on your hair type, it can be a bit difficult to wash out and might cause some build-up (btw, this is not true to all silicones, only the non-volatile types).

A white, elastomeric silicone powder that gives a nice silky and powdery feel to the products. It also has some oil and sebum absorption capabilities.

It’s pretty much the current IT-preservative. It’s safe and gentle, but even more importantly, it’s not a feared-by-everyone-mostly-without-scientific-reason paraben.

Other than having a good safety profile and being quite gentle to the skin it has some other advantages too. It can be used in many types of formulations as it has great thermal stability (can be heated up to 85°C) and works on a wide range of pH levels (ph 3-10).

It’s often used together with ethylhexylglycerin as it nicely improves the preservative activity of phenoxyethanol.

It’s a film-forming and thickening polymer (a large molecule composed of many repeated subunits) that comes to the formula usually as part of an emulsifier, thickener trio (with C13-14 Isoparaffin and Laureth-7, trade named Sepigel 305). This trio is an easy-to-use liquid that helps to create nice, non-tacky gel formulas.

An ester that comes from Cetearyl alcohol and the fatty acids of olive oil. It often comes to the formula coupled with Sorbitan Olivate as the two together form the well-known, natural emulsifier trade named Olivem 1000.

Other than helping oil and water to blend, the main thing of Olivem 1000 is generating liquid crystal structures that are similar to the lipid structures of the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the skin). Thanks to this, Olivem 1000 doubles as an active ingredient with significant moisturizing, barrier-repairing and soothing properties.

It also helps to deliver water-soluble actives such as caffeine more effectively, and can even boost SPF in sunscreen formulas. Its typical use level is 1-5% and has wide compatibility with other actives and oils.

Overall, a real multi-tasker with nice sensorial properties. No wonder it is so popular.

An ester coming from sorbitol and the fatty acids of olive oil. It is part of the popular emulsifier trade named Olivem 1000 that is well-known for generating biomimetic liquid crystal structures. We have more info on Olivem 1000 at Cetearyl Olivate >>

A thick, high molecular weight silicone that is usually diluted in another, lighter silicone fluid (like dimethicone or cyclopentasiloxane). The dimethiconol containing silicone blends leave a silky smooth, non-greasy film on the skin.

It’s a petroleum derived emollient and thickener. It often comes to the formula as part of an emulsifier, thickener trio (with Polyacrylamide and Laureth-7). This trio is an easy-to-use liquid that helps to create nice, non-tacky gel formulas.

A high-molecular-weight silicone elastomer (rubber-like elastic material) that is usually blended with a base silicone fluid (such as dimethicone or cyclopentasiloxane) to give the formula a silky smooth feel and to act as a thickening agent.

A little helper ingredient that works as a preservative. It works against bacteria and some species of fungi and yeast. It’s often combined with IT-preservative, phenoxyethanol.

A big molecule created from repeated subunits (a polymer of acrylic acid) that magically converts a liquid into a nice gel formula. It usually has to be neutralized with a base (such as sodium hydroxide) for the thickening to occur and it creates viscous, clear gels that also feel nice and non-tacky on the skin. No wonder, it is a very popular and common ingredient. Typically used at 1% or less in most formulations.

A not-very-interesting helper ingredient that is used as an emulsifier and/or surfactant. Comes from a coconut oil derived fatty alcohol, lauryl alcohol.

As far as skincare goes, sodium hyaluronate and hyaluronic acid are pretty much the same and the two names are used interchangeably. As cosmetic chemist kindofstephen writes on reddit «sodium hyaluronate disassociates into hyaluronic acid molecule and a sodium atom in solution».

In spite of this, if you search for «hyaluronic acid vs sodium hyaluronate» you will find on multiple places that sodium hyaluronate is smaller and can penetrate the skin better. Chemically, this is definitely not true, as the two forms are almost the same, both are polymers and the subunits can be repeated in both forms as much as you like. (We also checked Prospector for sodium hyaluronate versions actually used in cosmetic products and found that the most common molecular weight was 1.5-1.8 million Da that absolutely counts as high molecular weight).

What seems to be a true difference, though, is that the salt form is more stable, easier to formulate and cheaper so it pops up more often on the ingredient lists.

If you wanna become a real HA-and-the-skin expert you can read way more about the topic at hyaluronic acid (including penetration-questions, differences between high and low molecular weight versions and a bunch of references to scientific literature).

If you have spotted ethylhexylglycerin on the ingredient list, most probably you will see there also the current IT-preservative, phenoxyethanol. They are good friends because ethylhexylglycerin can boost the effectiveness of phenoxyethanol (and other preservatives) and as an added bonus it feels nice on the skin too.

Also, it’s an effective deodorant and a medium spreading emollient.

Exactly what it sounds: nice smelling stuff put into cosmetic products so that the end product also smells nice. Fragrance in the US and parfum in the EU is a generic term on the ingredient list that is made up of 30 to 50 chemicals on average (but it can have as much as 200 components!).

An emulsifier (helps oily and watery things to mix) that usually comes to the formula as the buddy of the oil-dispersible silicone powder Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer. The two together create a pre-emulsified, water-loving version of the elastomeric silicone powder which gives products a nice silky feel and has sebum absorption capabilities.

The unfancy name for it is lye. It’s a solid white stuff that’s very alkaline and used in small amounts to adjust the pH of the product and make it just right.

For example, in case of AHA or BHA exfoliants, the right pH is super-duper important, and pH adjusters like sodium hydroxide are needed.

BTW, lye is not something new. It was already used by ancient Egyptians to help oil and fat magically turn into something else. Can you guess what? Yes, it’s soap. It still often shows up in the ingredient list of soaps and other cleansers.

Sodium hydroxide in itself is a potent skin irritant, but once it’s reacted (as it is usually in skin care products, like exfoliants) it is totally harmless.

CI 42090 or Blue 1 is a super common synthetic colorant in beauty & food. Used alone, it adds a brilliant smurf-like blue color, combined with Tartrazine, it gives the fifty shades of green.
