Notes:
This lesson builds up to the song «Old MacDonald» and uses the farm animals and their sounds as the basis of the lesson.
Lesson Procedure:
Warm Up and Maintenance:
New Learning and Practice:
1. Use farm animal plastic toys for «play time»
If you have a small class, start off sitting together playing with the farm animals and any other farm toys to go with them (buildings and barns, tractors, pens, other animals, etc.). For larger classes, if you have enough sets you can put the class into groups with the animal toys to play with. At this stage, you don’t need to do any direct teaching – just play with the animals and have fun together!

As you are playing, start saying the animal vocab and animal sounds. E.g. «This is a pig –oink, oink!». As you and your students play with the animals tell them the animal names and sounds in English.
3. Teach & practice the vocab
After playing for a while collect all of the toys and put them away, keeping the cow, dog, sheep, duck and pig out. You’ll also need the same farm animal flashcards. Put the flashcards on the floor. Hold up one of the plastic animals and chorus the vocab, as follows:

Students: «cow, cow, cow»
Teacher: «And a cow says Moo. Moo, moo, moo”
Students: «Moo, moo, moo»
Then ask which flashcard (on the floor) is the cow. Encourage your students to point or touch the correct flashcard. Then place the animal on its corresponding flashcard. Do for all of the animals.
4. Play «Put the animal on the flashcard»
Now you have 5 animals toys sitting on their flashcards. Pick up each animal toy and throw it somewhere in the classroom. Call out different students to pick up an animal and place it back on the correct flashcard..

Put the animal toys away. Keep the flashcards on the floor. Tell your students to sit around the flashcards on the floor (or on a table) and to put their hands up in the air. Say a flashcard (e.g. «pig») and students have to quickly touch the correct card. Play a few rounds. After that, tell your students to close and to cover their eyes. Turn over one of the cards. Say “Open your eyes”. The students have to shout out the missing card.
6. Sing «Old MacDonald»
Either stick the flashcards in the order of the song on the board or use the Old MacDonald song poster. First, practice the gestures (below) for the farmer and the animals. Then play the song and encourage your students to sing along with you as they do the actions.

Verse 1:
Old MacDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O!
And on that farm he had a cow, E-I-E-I-O!

Learning about farm animals
This post may contain affiliate ads at no cost to you. See my disclosures for more information.
Farm animals are a great topic of study for preschoolers. I recently completed a Life on the Farm unit with my two kids, 4-year-old QBoy and 3-year-old XGirl.
When I start a new unit with the kids, I usually plan out a few learning objectives to keep me on track with our activities. For our farm unit, here are just a few of the objectives I hoped to achieve while learning about farm animals:
Toward that end, we did several activities to help us achieve these objectives for our learning about farm animals.
Note: For more kid-friendly farm activities and printables, see my Life on the Farm Unit Study page.
Farm animal memory game
I printed some farm animal memory cards from my > Farm Printable Pack” href=”https://www.giftofcuriosity.com/printables/download-farm-printable-pack/” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>Farm Printable Pack so we could play memory. My kids love this game, and doing it with farm animals was a great way to reinforce the names of the animals.
Farm animal families
We learned the names for the father, mother, and baby animals in each animal family. (I’ve created a Farm Animal Families printable you can grab in my shop.)
First we matched the picture-with-label cards to the picture-only cards. We also matched animals from our Safari Ltd Down on the Farm Toob, Safari Ltd Farm Animals Toob
, and Safari Ltd Farm Babies Toob
to the pictures.
How to milk a cow
We didn’t have the opportunity to milk an actual cow, but we did something almost as good – we made our own cow udder from a rubber glove! I poked small holes in the finger tips with a pin, filled it with water, and then let the kids “milk” it.
They laughed so hard when the water squirt me!
What products come from animals
I found a great printable focused on farm animals and their by-products at Joyfully Weary. We used it to learn about the various food and non-food products that come from chickens, cows, sheep, ducks, and pigs.
Farm animal coverings
I planned a sticky wall activity to get the kids thinking about the fact that different farm animals have different types of coverings, such as hair, wool, and feathers.
To prepare, I used to painter’s tape to hang black line pictures of a horse, sheep, and chicken on our wall. I then placed clear contact paper
over the printables, with the sticky side facing out. (The printables are from Happy and Blessed Home, but I’m not sure if they are available anymore since I received them by subscribing to the email list.)
I then laid out a tray with feathers, cotton balls (wool), and yarn (hair).
The kids added the appropriate covering to each animal by sticking it to the clear contact paper.
And this was the end result! XGirl, whose work is on the right, thought it was particularly funny that she completely covered her sheep so even its face was not showing. 🙂
Visit a goat farm
Finally, our family also took a trip to visit Harley Farms in Pescadero, CA, which specializes in goat cheeses. We got to meet some of the 200 or so goats at the farm. In this picture the kids are in the barn checking out the goat food.
We also got a tour of the goat milking machinery. We learned that it would take 10 minutes to milk one goat by hand, but with these pumps they can milk 14 goats in 4 minutes.

I love the activity with the feather, cottonballs and yarn. Very clever! I’m doing preschool at home with my four year, and it’s really helpful to see how you plan out a unit.
Katie
Hi Colleen – I hope it’s clear that we didn’t do the activities in the same order I post them. I group the activities for the posts because I think it makes the most sense for the reader or for someone searching for a particular type of farm-related activity.
Stephanie @ From the Burbs to the Boonies
I really like how you have objectives for each unit, thanks for sharing those, I need to make objectives and goals for the things we work on at home from school. I also love how you have them put appropriate fur on and matching using the 3 dimensional animals and also the word. And pretending to milk a cow, how cool!
Missy

This is a great way to also bring awareness in children about how to treat animals kindly! Kindness comes so naturally to them anyway.

Farm Animal Preschool Activities and Printables
Farm animals activities, crafts, games, and printables for preschool and kindergarten. Celebrate the new life of spring with this theme on baby animals born on the farm. Children engage in a series of activities, games, songs, and rhymes centered on baby animal vocabulary: chick, duckling, lamb, bunny, puppy, kitten, foal, calf, piglet, and kid. The felt story «Are You My Mom?» is a great way to introduce children to these terms. This theme is a natural tie-in to our At the Farm activities. Farm Animals Activities For Preschoolers
This kids farmyard printable pack is aimed at preschool and kindergarten age children, three through eight. It includes a variety of math and literacy activities all with a fun farm and farm animal theme. You can find all of preschool learning activities here.
Materials Required:
Please note that affiliate links are used in this post.
Here are some items that pair well with these activities. You will use each of these items over and over during all my printable preschool activity packs.
This Farm theme preschool pack contains over 100 pages and includes many activities.
In this printable pack, children enjoy learning about the animals on the farm as well as some of the buildings and equipment you will find there.
There are pages for children to research some of the farm animals, including pigs and goats, and take notes of what they find. There is also a printable book where children can read about different animals on the farm. After reading the sentence and writing the name of the animal, they can decorate the picture however they want, with coloring pencils, markers or crayons.
There are also some Color by number / letter / shape pages that would make great posters after they are completed! Children and teachers will love that some of the farm animal activities for preschoolers can be turned into posters!
One of the most fun activities has to be the ‘Finish the Farm Animals.’ This is a great art project where children will learn to draw the other half of the face of a farm animal. We’ve included such animals as dogs, donkey, bunny and more. There are two different versions, one simple one and one a little more complex. After they complete their drawings, they can color them in as well. There is also a place to trace the animal name.
Some extra farm activities that are not found in our normal printable activity packs is this finish the farm animals faces. The one with the tracing lines can be used with younger children. The one without tracing lines are more for older children (pre k, kindergarten or elementary school age) to work on some visual processing. It is very challenging and I urge you, as an adult to try it as well. You could also do these cool barnyard activities. Encourage your children to talk about the farm animal sounds. What sound does the dog make? What about the cat?
Toddlers absolutely love that!
Preschoolers love singing so sing some farm songs! Old MacDonald had a farm is a good one.

Today we have a guest. This is a mouse. Let’s say hello to the mouse. –HELLO – I wonder what her name is. Let’s ask her. What’s your name? My name is Adele (другим голосом). Oh, hello, Adele.
What’s your name?
How old are you?
Oh, hello, Oleg. My name is Adele. Let’s be friends (пожимает руку).
You are 3?! You are a big boy/girl! I am 2. I am a little mouse.
— Adele, what do you have?
— What’s there in the bag?
— There are animals in the bag.
— Let’s see. What is this?
— What color is the dog?
— Yes, it is. This is a brown dog.
You have many animals, Adele! Children, let’s count the animals. 1,2,3,4….
Adele:
What is this, Adele?
Cookie: Hmmm…. Dog (говорит неправильно)?
Adele, this is not dog. This is a cat!
I like / I don’t like и соответственно вопрос “What do you like?”, который согласно нашей теме можно задать иначе:
“What animals do you like?”
“What animal do you like more?”
“What animals don’t you like?”
“Do you like the horse or the pig?”
During the day, animals like to play and dance. But night came and animals went to sleep. (накрываем платком) And you go to sleep. Close your eyes.
“Oh, wake up! It is morning! The sun is in the sky! Oh, look at the animals! Somebody is missing. Who is missing? The dog is here. The horse is here. The mouse is here. But who is missing?”
Dog, jump!
Cow, sit downon the floor!
