Monsters are one of the top antagonists of Sweet Home. They are humans, infected by Zero, who have given into their desires and have had their soul take over their body.
Contents
Overview [ ]
They are prone to violence, have super strength and agility as well as unique, deadly abilities, are able to regenerate quickly and are hard to destroy. and generally seek to kill humans, with some exceptions.
Each monster has a unique set of traits and abilities related to the desires of the human it was made from. For example, the Slime Monster was based off a young child’s desire to not be seen. Most monsters repeatedly utter phrases related to their desires, but they can respond to things around them, such as Steroid Monster remembering Hyun’s weapon. Nearly all monsters are driven by cannibalistic tendencies and very sensitive to sound. They will attack any non-infected human on sight. They usually do not attack other monsters except for specific circumstances (Steroid attacking Blind because Blind hurt Steroid). Monsters will also stop eating humans if they see any visible signs of infection. However, they will continue to attack if the infected human is known to be hostile to monsters. Monsters also do not die as easily as humans do. They can recover from most injuries and organ damage from the neck down. While the skull can be fractured, if any part of it is destroyed completely, it will not regenerate. It is possible to kill a monster through severly mutilating and destroying its body, but a monsters’ innate durability and regenerative qualities make this very difficult to do. The easiest way to completely kill a monster is through incineration; however, some monsters are smart enough and have enough pain tolerance to find a way to put out the fire before it is fatal.
The monsters exert a signal-jamming presence. This makes wireless internet and telephones unusable. However, if someone has wired internet, they are still fine. While cell phones cannot be used for normal functions, they will start beeping as a monster gets close. The closer/greater the number of nearby monsters, the more frequent the beeps. This will enable humans to hide and avoid monsters. Sleeping monsters, however, do not get detected. In other words, a visible monster without any phone beeping can be, assuming the phone has power and could have beeped, cautiously and safely avoided or killed without a fight so long as the human does not make a sound. The monsters also appear to have a very acidic, corrosive spit they can launch as a projectile. It can easily burn flesh. While only few monsters have been observed using it, it can be assumed that all monsters have this property as different types of monsters have used it, regardless of its desire.
Most monsters are horrific in appearance; many monsters are clearly humanoid, but others take on shapes that belie their origins. Monsters often have bulging black eyes with distressed red scleras, skin that ranges from grays to reds to near-purples, no hair, and do not wear clothing, though there are exceptions. Very few humans are able to become half-monsters for any period of time.
Transformation [ ]
Early symptoms of monsterification include a sudden bloody nose accompanied by a fainting spell and auditory hallucinations. The hallucination is actually the entity responsible for turning people into monsters by manipulating them to reveal and give in to their greatest desire. The entity is very persistent and will try any means to get the human to give in. The time it takes for one to turn into a monster varies depending on the person’s Soul and their will to resist it. Some humans end up turning in the course of one day or even one night. Humans with a strong will and the self-awareness to know what the entity is trying to do are able to delay complete monsterfication for weeks. People with split personalities are supposedly able to control the monster since it can only control one personality at a time. As the human nears complete monsterfication, they will occasionally lose control of themselves to their monster side, but they can revert back. Occasionally, extreme emotional shock or very close friend may let the human re-take control. A human with a strong will to resist monsterfication may temporarily retain their consciousness while the rest of their body mutates, though they too will lose control of their physical selves humans will mutate grotesquely.
Humans who have turned into monsters are not completely gone. Their psyches are locked away in a dream world, away from conscious control of their bodies. The dream world is designed to cater to every desire the human has. The human stays there until all their desires are satisfied and they realize there is nothing left for them. According to Hyun’s Inner Monster, this sense of futility is what triggers the monster to cocoonify and the human to «evolve.» After a period of time, the cocoon hatches. From the cocoon, the human will emerge; however, the human will not be wearing any clothes and its eyes appear dull and lifeless. These «evolved» beings claim to not feel any emotion or have any desire. They will not react to any sort of stimuli. These claims, however, are possibly false, as an evolved Hyun showed signs of sadness upon listening to a song. Monsters are equally as protective of the evolved humans as they are of the cocoons. The evolved human is also able to forcibly induce monsterfication to people who aren’t showing signs of monsterfication, but it appears it only happens if the target is willing to accept becoming a monster.
Evolution [ ]
At some point, the trapped human conscious will satisfy all their desires and will no longer derive any pleasure from them, nor can they come up with new ones. This causes the start of the «evolution.» The monster will turn into a cocoon. At this point, the evolving monster is at its most vulnerable to destruction. Monsters have an instinct to protect the cocoons. As Ihyun Jo discovered, monsters will not harm the cocoon in anyway, even if a half-monster attempts to force the monsterfied self to do so. Monsters are able to sense the destruction of a cocoon from a fairly wide radius, and any monster who senses its destruction will rush to the location to eliminate any threat.
After an unknown period, the cocoon will hatch, revealing a human-like figure. This «evolved» human presumably takes on their appearance pre-monsterfication, albeit entirely naked. Monsters are able to sense they are an evolved human and will not attack them, and will instead be enraged if they are killed. Monsters will also protect them. These evolved humans are completely devoid of emotion. While they cannot feel anger or fear, they also cannot feel positive emotions such as happiness. They are not hostile to «unevolved» humans. Instead, they will try to encourage them to turn into a monster and become an evolved human as part of the «Revolution.» The «evolved» human also has the ability to forcibly turn a willing individual into a monster even if the human is not «chosen» to join the revolution. Unlike monsters, the «evolved» human does not have any regenerative ability to speak of and they can be killed through typical human-killing means. These Evolved Humans are not entirely infallible. An evovled Hyun started showing signs of emotion after listening to the song «Sweet Home.» This could indicate that if a human has a strong emotional connection with something before turning, being exposed to it again may cause them to regain their humanity.
Variants [ ]
They are a rare species appearing in Shotgun Boy. In contrast of the known monster’s in Sweet Home, they have a higher IQ, they can remember the data of their victims, their voices aren’t broken, and there are other characteristics that contrast them from the Sweet Home monsters.
Netflix adaption [ ]
Similar to the manwha (Korean comic), the monsterfication will have the same nosebleeds, fainting spells and hallucinations. They will have red scleras. grey or red skin, but no bulging eyes. Instead they will have black eyes and they will attack humans.

Setting
Sweet Home takes place at an apartment complex called Green Home. Green Home is located in an unspecified city in South Korea.
Synopsis
Characters
Humans
Hyun Cha
The main character of the story. He is an isolated, lonely teenager who is forced to move when his family dies in a traffic accident. He is eighteen years old and stopped going to high school due excessive bullying and threats made against his family by a well connected student in his school. He spends his time trolling and tricking on the internet, as well as playing various RPGs. He sold his old house and moved into Green Home apartments (room 1410) because the money left by his deceased family was insufficient for him to survive as an isolated person. He then proceeds to choose October 25 th as the to date to commit suicide after watching the last episode of his favorite series Maria From the Sky! After the apocalypse breaks out, he shows early symptoms of monsterization such as nosebleed and fainting. He is left in a coma for days, only to discover the current situation of the world. Throughout the story, he seems to have a hidden obsession with being the hero that involves his past, desire used by his inner monster as a temptation. However, he managed to avoid turning into a monster by discovering its deception. Despite this, the monster continues to try and turn him, and there are several times where he comes close to turning. Despite being anti-social, Hyun is often reluctant to incinerate monsters as he does not want to kill its former human self.Hyun loves jisu mostly because she looks like a character from a tv show he watches.
Jisu Yoon
Jayhun
A Korean teacher who is also a devout Christian. He lives in room 1506 and is referred by Jisu as gentle and good looking. After the apocalypse, he goes out to help people with his sword. It is later revealed that he cut «Half-cut head»‘s head. In episode 63, after trying to save Eun Lee from the monsterized Mr. Kim, he’s knocked to the ground without anything to defend himself. With his shield destroyed and sword out of reach, he was killed by Mr. Kim.
Wook Pyeon
He is referred to as «Mr. Mobster» by almost everyone in the building. He is fierce-looking and he appears to have a gangster manner. However, he calls himself a «good fella». When the apocalypse broke out, he encountered Hyun who was scared of some noises and he threatened Hyun. He then checks what caused the sounds only to find a confused Jisu. He commands Jisu to watch Hyun while he goes to see what happened. He is part of the Helping Squad. It is later revealed that he was a detective, but was fired for using excessive force on a drug dealer.
Eun Lee
A young girl, who is Hyuk’s little sister. She is quite childlike and a liar. She is part of the Helping Squad. She secretly smokes daily. She has a crush on Hyun. She seems to have a nice friendship with Wook and was the one who told Hyun about Hyuk’s reasons and origins for what he does. She does seem to show fear, as she feared both Tongue and Mr. Kim on those occasions. She is often embarrassed by Hyuk’s geeky and coldhearted tendencies, but still is concerned for him as his sister.
Hyuk Lee
A young boy, who is Eun’s big brother. He is carefree but rather smart. He maintained a chat with Hyun through the internet with the nickname of «crewcrew». He is often very callous and blunt when talking to others, which many find irritating. He is shown to be the Leader of the Helping Squad and tells the others what too do, although not everyone agrees with him. He was a bit careless at first with the monsters but after Mr. Glasses’ death, he seemed to be more strategic and planning. Wook confirmed that Hyuk is still scared of the monstrous events going on and Eun said he wasn’t very good or social in school despite being smart.
Dusik Hahn
An intimidating man who looks to be in his 30s or 40s. He is slightly overweight but still muscular, and sits in a wheelchair due to his missing left leg, which he lost saving a little girl. During Hyun’s encounter with «Eyeball», he lent a helping hand by shooting its neck off, saving Hyun. He was also responsible for one of Half-Head’s ears being blown off which saved Sook and Yeong’s lives as he would’ve heard them shiver. He seemed to have really cared for Myeong-Ja Lim after some interactions and cried when she became a monster. Now he seems to have more hope. He sacrifices himself as monsters overrun the basement as he starts turning into a monster himself.
A 9-year-old little girl living with her father and little brother. She was visiting her father at the time of the apocalypse. She seems to be protective for her brother in handling situations like monsters. She seems to be a good listener as she remembers Hyun telling her and Yeong about Half-Head’s lack of sight and best to remain quiet. But she also knows that she can die anytime soon as she tells her brother to close her eyes twice when Muscles tried to grab them.
Sook and Yeong’s father
Sook’s father was a former military figure, who used to smoke a lot. He was trying to get down to get some more food before being warned by Hyun about Eyes sneaking on him. He freaked out and ended up breaking the rope he was attached to and fell to his death. Surprisingly, no monster took his corpse yet.
Yeong
A 6-year-old little boy, and Sook’s younger brother. They resided in 1210, then in Dusik’s apartment at 1408. Soon they moved to the 1st floor. Before the apocalypse, he seemed to be cheeky and playful, currently, he’s scared of the chaos going on.
Sangsu
Sangsu is a large bald man who usually takes on the some form of guard duty, whether it be of infected humans, or hostages held by the criminals. He is able to see that Byeong-Il was acting rather irrationally out of paranoia, though he was unable to convince her otherwise. He is, however, rather cowardly, and when Mr. Kim monsterfied and attacked the other survivors, he ran into a storage room and barricaded it despite Hyun and Jisu wanting to go and help fight. It eventually took the threat of physical violence to get him to agree. Despite switching allegiances from that of the Helping Hands team to that of the criminals, Sangsu mainly wants to help out and make a difference. He is eventually killed by Joon, who wants to use his corpse as monster food.
Mushroom-Hair Guy
Mushroom-Hair Guy, who has no official name, was a part of the Helping Squad and followed Hyuk and the others around. He had a mushroom haircut. He mostly just spoke one-liners and appeared for crowd appearance. He was killed by Mr. Kim by being sliced by his weed-wacker.
Mr. Glasses
Mr. Glasses is a friend of Hyuk Lee who helped check out the first floor. He was then shown that he was killed by Tentacles attempting to save Hyun. His death made Hyuk be more considerate of others’ lives.
Seok Kim
Seok Kim was the abusive husband of Seon Ahn. He was shown to be rude and bossy towards everyone else, and was a hypocrite. He is shown in flashbacks as a heavy and abusive drunk who hurts his wife to cope with his problems. He is antagonistic toward the other infected humans until becoming infected himself. As is condition progresses, he becomes increasingly hostile toward the other members of the Helping Squad. He eventually succumbs to his inner monster, although just before his last traces of humanity are gone, Seon bludgeons him to death.
Jay Ryu
Jay Ryu is a man who was a survivor of the monster apocalypse and apart of the Helping Squad. At first, he didn’t seem to do much, but then when Mr. Kim began killing the Helping Squad, he and Hyein Son got into an argument on who should fight Mr. Kim, and it resulted with Hyein smashing his head in with a dumbbell. Later, when Hyein tried to kill Seon Ahn, he began to nosebleed and monsterized, ranting about how his dream is ruined. He seemed to be unaware of the fact that he’s a monsterwhen Seon called him that so he checked the mirror. Seeing that he’s a monster, he began to freak out and was whacked by Seon with a wooden plank. Later he and Seon were sent to a room on the first floor (the same one Hyun and Seok were) and discussed what happens when you fully monsterized.
He eventually succumbs to his desire for attention, to be a star, and for people to otherwise see him in the spotlight, turning into a monster with long, gangling limbs and a giant face for a torso. As a monster, he breaks through the ceiling of the room he and Seon are in, and emerges on the third floor, where he confronts Hyun. Hyun, initially resists attacking him, thinking his needs for constant reassurance are relatively harmless. However, when Hyun refuses to persistently acknowledge him, Jay afflicts Hyun with a crushing headache, forcing Hyun to retaliate in self defense.
Seon Ahn
Seon Ahn is the abused wife of Seok Kim. She was seen as the first survivors of the Monster Apocalypse. She was shown to be abused being yelled out and insulted. It’s soon revealed that her desire is to kill Seok, but she refuses to let the monster take over for her. She began discussing with Hyein about being monsterized, showing Hyein that she became a monster now. She soon encountered Seok in his monster form, getting him to snap out of his senses to the true Seok Kim. After he apologized, Seon smashed his head in multiple times with a wooden plank and began feeling traumatized of what’s she’s done. Later, Hyein attempts to burn her alive with a flaming bottle but Jay Ryu stopped her. Seon then tried to stop Jay before she realized he was a monster and began freaking out, resulting in her knocking him out. Hyein then kicked Seon down and threw the bottle but she caught it. They got into an argument on who’s right, with Seon calling Hyein out on her cowardice. Soon they were caught by the others with Hyein telling them that Seon is a monster. This led to her and Jay being put in quarantine She began talking to Jay about being monsterized and how you can be with your desire if you do. She was executed by Joon Shin through a bullet in the skull.
Hyein Son
Hyein Son is a girl with glasses who seems to be somewhat bossy and cowardly. She has a bossy demeanor like Seok Kim but yet she also seems to a coward when it comes to certain things like killing someone. She was the one who convinced Seon Ahn to try to kill Seok. When that failed, they had a talk about it, with Hyein calling her a coward. However, that changed when Seon revealed to her that she was a monster. And with the promise of killing her, Hyein attempted to burn Seon alive before being interrupted by Jay Ryu. After Seon knocked out Jay, Hyein kicked her back and tried to kill her and Jay with the flamed bottle but Seon grabbed it. They got into an argument before Wook, Hyun and a few others entered in with Hyein confessing that Seon has become a monster.Later, as monsters overran the ground floor, she and Yuri attempted to escape. Yuri wanted to go to the original rendezvous point on the second floor, but Hyein insisted on climbing up higher, leading the two to split up. She later encounters Gapsu, who was maimed, but not killed by a monster as he was turning into one himself. Gapsu attempts to rape Hyein, but Yuri catches up and knocks Gapsu away. They are approached by a mysterious woman who Gapsu insists is a monster, leading Hyein to shoot the woman in the head with a crossbow, and later incinerating Gapsu’s corpse. The stress causes Hyein to lose her sanity and attempt to murder Yuri, but Yuri brings Hyein back to her senses. She regrets what she was about to do, but attempts to justify killing the woman by claiming she was a monster. Later, when she tried to escape by ziplining with the others, she was stabbed by the bat monster, losing her grip and plummeting over 30 stories to her death.
Myeong-Ja Lim
A lady who lost her baby in an accident a year prior to the apocalypse. She is in denial about the loss of her child. Protects Sook and Yeong from ‘Muscles’ in episode 27, and demonstrates a degree of control over her monsterization, similar to Hyun. She initially starts succumbing to her monsterization when fighting off the Muscle, but is able to return to normal upon learning the children are safe. However, she ultimately succumbs to the infection but managed to beat the monster in its own game by desiring to be her own baby. Later on, her monster form is revealed to have taken the shape of a cocoon or egg. Hyun, Jisu, and Ihyun attempt to destroy it, but Ihyun is unable to destroy it and even attacked himself. Eventually, Ihyun is able to overcome its defenses, and sets it on fire. However, the egg’s destruction attracted a very large amount of monsters, causing much of the apartment building to get overrun.
Seop Ahn
Seop Ahn is a old man who survived through weapons such as a crossbow and flamed bottles. He claims to be not scared of death, but he isn’t suicidal like Hyun was. He is shown to be a bit of a grump and a joker when he first met Hyun and Wook, pretending to be upset that Hyun was a monster. He’s shown to care for Yuri wanting to attack Mr. 705 when he grabbed her neck. It’s soon shown that his claim about not being scared of death might be false as he shook in fear as Mr. Kim walked towards him with his bloody weed-wacker. Seop tried to distract Mr. Kim with a cross bolt to the shoulder as Hyun charged at him with Tongue’s tongue. He seems to dislike people passing away before him and seems a bit annoyed with Hyuk’s treatment of the bodies. He helped get the bottles ready for flames and is one of the members to attack the 3 monsters down in the parking lot. He was smashed by the Muscles’ fist after saving Hyun from its charge. His death traumatized Hyun, who remains haunted by his inability to save Seop.
Yuri Park
Yuri Park is a young female who appeared to have survived by using actual weapons to fight the monsters. She apparently has studied medicine and is able to treat wounds. However, this also means she is unable to kill normal humans, no matter how dangerous, as she has sworn to save lives rather than take them. She, along with Seop Ahn, survived through taking dead corpses’ weapons and items. She appears to have asthma with barely any air in her inhaler left. She somehow survived an attack from Mr. 705 and helped Wook’s injuries. She stayed behind to take care of Sook and Yeong while Hyun and the others get the elevator working. She headed down after they got rid of Mr. Kim and was assigned as one of the members to attack the 3 monsters in the parking lot. She had to be saved as she merely attacked a decoy. Later, as monsters overran the apartment, she ran to the second floor, but eventually ran up to where Hywein was, arriving in time to save her from Gapsu. She later got into an argument with a delirious Hywein, having to force the latter to come to her senses.
Ji-Eun
Ji-Eun is a member of the Helping Squad. She seems to be developing a rapport with Byeong-Il, and is otherwise known amongst the other characters for her good looks. During the evacuation of the first floor after the monsters breach Green Home, she is killed off screen by a monster.
Byeong-Il
A member of the Helping Squad, she first becomes notable for fearing that leaders of their group may be isolating the less involved members, and not sharing resources such as food and water with them fairly. She becomes concerned that she and the others will be relegated to an after thought under Hyuk and Wook’s leadership. After failing to convince the others of this, she confronts Wook, and pulls a knife on him. They argue, and she becomes convinced that she should take on a more active role in the groups activities. She later goes out as part of the operation to retrieve more supplies, and flees when their car is struck by Muscles. She returns with the bus load of criminals, not realizing whom she has brought back with her. While she feels guilty about it, she doesn’t like being called out for it. Up until monsters started overrunning the building, she helped Dasik with the preparations on escaping green hill apartments.
Rotten Fish Lady
A minor, unnamed character albeit a member of the Helping Squad, she is first notably seen in a flashback giving Mr. Kim a gift, claiming it was sent to her by a relative, and there was too much for her, so she wanted him to have the extras. Heading back to his office, Mr. Kim opens the package, to reveal a box of rotten fish.
Later on, after having completed the monsterization process, and accidentally allowed onto the first floor during the elevator fiasco, Mr. Kim targets and kills her first, all while raging about rotten fish.
Joon Shin
Joon Shin is the leader of the criminals. He was put in jail by Detective Wook and took charge of the Green Residence as his base currently. He is physically imposing and authoritarian. He is willing to use whoever and whatever means to maintain control. He lied about the food supplies he brought to gain control of the apartment building. He attempted to get Hyun to join him, seeing Hyun’s limited control over monstrification to be useful. Furthermore, he is completely amoral, having dismembered many innocent people to leave as bait while he escapes, and he is willing to abandon his underlings if his life depended on it. He eventually gets deceived by Wook in a fight, who pretended to lose to steal the bus key.
Ihyun Jo
Ihyun is the kindest of the criminals, giving inhalers to Yuri, and trying to explain his own wrongdoings. He is the only other known Half monster/ Half Human besides Hyun. He is stronger than Hyun and can control his monsterization at will, having thick, extendable, whiplike projections shoot from his arms, and can also form a sickle with it. This is due to his split personalities, as only one likeness can be consumed by the monster at a time. One personality is polite and soft-spoken, while the other revels in being the supposed «dark hero.» He and Hyun were sent on a mission to head up to the upper apartment floors to eliminate more monsters by Joon. He was then dominated by Hyun after a short brawl due to different beliefs. Ihyun then turned back into his kind personality, but not long before after they accidentally burned a monster egg and they are ambushed by two monsters, with Ihyun pursuing one of them to the roof. He then sees a naked woman on the edge of the top of the roof. The female then disappears after Ihyun gets attacked by another monster behind his back but he fights it off with his monsterized arm and strength, and is shocked and confused when he realizes that the female was not there and thinking he was just hallucinating. He goes with Hyun and runs away when his other personality kicked in. When he sees his boss for the final time, he gets shocked at how strong his monster form became while losing an arm, eventually being crushed by his boss.
Hoyeon Baek
Hoyeon is apart of the escaped criminals, known as Joon’s «Right-hand man» He wields a gun and has a fiery temper. While imprisoned, Wook recalls that Hoyeon was a skilled fighter, with a lot of potential before Joon «got to him». Hoyeon apparently cannot resist a challenge, a fact Wook used to his advantage to get free. Hoyeon is later killed when monsters breach the first floor of Green Home.
Hyunshik Lim
Hyunshik is one of the escaped criminals. He was originally imprisoned for being a con-artist. He claims to be a former psychologist, and has a way with words. Initially, he tells stories of dubious origin in order to sow discontent amongst the Helping Squad. Later on he is seen as being the criminal member most frequently tasked with dousing monsters in gasoline. He goes with the rest of the survivors to the rooftop in order to escape but fails to use the rope as he was afraid of heights. He then sees his boss’ monsterized form and gets knocked over the roof, plummeting to his death head first.
Gapsu Seo
The fifth members of the escaped criminals. Amongst them, he is known as a man who «does whatever he wants». It is revealed he has a thing for pornographic mags and when he saw the mysterious woman without any clothes, the flying monster attacks, and maims him; however, upon detecting the infection, does not continue to maim him. His monsterized form desires women.
He attempts to rape Hyein, but Yuri saves her. He is killed when Hyein slashes his throat.
Monsters
«Wendigo»/ Hungry
