Rather than looking at the different archetypes, I’ll be providing a breakdown of skills and their combinations.

My tier list for skills

God-tier: Firearms, medicine.

Good: Science, psychology, melee*, survival*

Mediocre: Stealth, occult, investigation, athletics.

Trash: Subterfuge*, speechcraft
*Skills are worth having a value point in, in the case of subterfuge maybe 1-2 points.

Melee is probably the easiest and most convenient skill for combat in my opinion, although firearms and occult magic have an argument. My reasoning is that guns require somewhat scarce ammo and have less synergy than melee attackers surrounding an enemy and hacking it to death. As enemies charge the nearest party member and cover/terrain isn’t much of a factor, you need characters that are able to take damage and handle enemies in their face. Gun builds don’t help with that. That said, I had a change of heart once I witnessed how broken a gunslinger build is. I soloed the Devourer King with snapshots because a bug resulted in both of my companions going insane. So melee has been demoted to merely good and firearms is now god tier.

Flanked enemies get defence penalties though, which pushes things back in melee’s favour. And the increase in defence and damage resistance from the core melee stats makes the game pretty trivial.

Occultism is the worst combat choice and with the removal of spell enhancements it is a pretty mediocre choice now. Spells cost sanity, their effects are often quite specific, and the damage/effects don’t necessarily justify the cost. You will want Outsider medic or a medicine main to help keep a magic user’s sanity high. However, the quest solutions occultism provides can make it an «I win» button, making it the most non-combat oriented option, especially combined with Stealth.

Medicine is a great skill: it has applications in dialogue, it increases healing on rest, and you can craft drugs! The arguable best non-combat skill in the game.

Science is cool for crafting and provides lots of interesting dialogue options/interactions, psychology is great as well for dialogue. Psychology lets you heal sanity damage during rest but this is less necessary than healing health damage most of the time. A high-level psychologist is virtually impervious to mental effects. Survival is really good for traversing the world map and preventing ambushes during rest, as well as getting a lot of unique crafting recipes.

Stealth is a trap option, you will be forced to fight in some occasions so avoiding it the whole game is a bad idea, but is ok combined with occultism. Athletics is a circumstantial pick (mainly for companions like the butler and the dog) but limited in usefulness.

Subterfuge and speechcraft have limited applications, usually only helping to save or gain a few cigs here or there or doing things that more generalised skills offer. Avoid investing lots of skill points into those, maybe stick to 1-2 points. A presence/charismatic character is better off being a generalist and a subterfuge character should probably respec into guns and investigation.

Some suggestions for character archetypes:

A young soldier with 9 physique/8 agility/rest into will, presence dump stat. I don’t recommend dumping mind or sense below 4. Max out melee, add points to survival and psychology to round out your resistance to physical and mental damage. My reasoning for survival over athletics is that survival increases your damage resistance, which should be sky high from all the physique anyway. You can select dodger in the perk tree to increase your physical defense (increased by athletics). Survival also has the benefit of recipes and keeping watch while resting/smoother travel on the world map, so I believe it is a strictly better choice. Equip a 4 ap weapon with high damage, like the indian’s machete or Colonel Grant’s saber, and you can do insane damage with a rear crit strike.

Adult non-combat scientist:

All stats 4 except 8 mind 6 sense 6 agility. You can dump presence if you want and free up a point. This choice is viable in combat as long as you stick to pistols with reasonably good handling and let your companions/henchman tank. Pick between medicine, science, psychology. Medicine was amongst the best choices until Outsider could craft. A value point in medicine is good, but otherwise get science and psychology.

Swap mind for will, 4 sense, 6 agility, 6 mind. You can buff up your firearm skill to have a more reliable source of damage. Upgraded, the Spit and Pazuzu spell are quite good in combat. Upgraded, the spell that lets you talk to the dead can be a win button against enemies vulnerable to sanity damage. I would recommend pairing Occult with Stealth because a lot of its applications allow you to skip combat, and Stealth allows you to skip even more.

In my experience, building your character as follows should give you an optimal run through the game. Credit to kiril-budisow for pointing out the gist of this build.

Young Investigator, Humanist worldview, Ex-Cop. This is an all-in firearm build so the background is an obvious one, youth for more stats, humanism seems to get the most opportunities to gain back sanity and compassionate dialogue choices with your companions help keep them on side.

Stats: 4/10/9/4/4/3
Skills: pump firearms, value points as described below.

This build gives you 10 AP, and with your sky-high reaction, you will be getting 2 AP reaction bonuses often, for a staggering 12 AP. If you get the mania condition, this goes up to 13. Paranoia is not bad either for even higher reaction. You can max out at a base 12 AP and 14 ap on proc with the agility artifact. Then up to 14/16 AP with the use of drugs. You can dig out the sleeper in one turn, or snapshot 5 times in a round!

Level 1: 3 points in firearms, 1 in subterfuge. With your high agility, you should be able to open most containers, at least in the early game. Buy a couple of lockpicks from the junkseller for the bank. Pick open the truck at the start for a nice 4-6 damage pistol.
Level 2: 4 points in firearms, 1 in investigation, Alertness perk. You get this level up just in time to open the safe completing the bank quest. You can also later inspect the wax guy in the pawn shop to get a free pistol, although it’s not as good as the Depez. In terms of perks, the more reaction the better, why not?
Level 3: 5 points in firearms, take a value point in melee, snapshot perk! The melee skill will allow you to open the crates in the warehouse once you have a crowbar. Snapshot is part of what makes this build so insane. You can shoot 4 times a round with a reaction proc. Disgusting.
Level 4: 6 points in firearms, start pumping psychology. Gunslinger perk is the obvious choice, improving attack and damage with pistols.
Level 5: 7 points in firearms, 2 in psychology. I got the sniper perk. I haven’t really crunched the numbers but crits are good so I rolled with it. You could increase Alertness if you want to go all-in on bonus AP.
Level 6: 8 points in firearms, 3 in psychology, Controlled mind perk. Even more reaction and less chance of critical failure. Psychology also helps mitigate the main weakness of this build, sanity damage.
Level 7: 9 points in firearms, 4 in psychology, Sniper II or Alertness II.

Build this guy for melee! He becomes a top tier damage dealer by the end of the game.
Recommended skills: Melee, medicine
Recommended perks: Wrath of isolation, hollowing strikes (or whatever it’s called).
Recommended artifacts: claw of pazuzu, the mark that gives +2 agility, +1 melee artifact

Think of the Outsider as a rogue. He does a lot of damage, but he is relatively frail, more of a glass cannon. Keep him on the outside of combat until he can backstab. The damage output gets insane, especially if you drug him up.

Once the patch goes in and NPCs can craft, this guy will be a monster, a zombie Breaking Bad supplying the whole team with drugs.

My favourite character in the game, this companion is both a good tank and a useful damage dealer.
Skills: melee, survival
Perks: Affix the bayonets, U N D Y I N G physiology, the one that increases his chance of going berserk.
Artifacts: you can give him the +1 melee artifact, Mwengi’s heart that increases constitution, whatever else you like

With the nameless soldier, treat him like a skirmisher. Send him alone against the enemy. He has the tankiness to survive and his damage output, especially when he goes berserk, gets insanely high. Just keep enemies between you and the rest of your team. Also, while he might fire a shot at one of your guys at the start of the round, his firearms skill is low so hopefully not a big deal.

Don’t leave home without a lantern, kerosene, a shovel, rope/grappling hook, or a crowbar. These are all useful items in the game and should be kept in your inventory.

Rations, laudunum shots, and camping supplies are all cheap and widely available. Don’t be afraid to stock up on these. Keep your sanity high. Once it starts to fall below half, smoke up/drink up.

To use spells and items in battle, right click on the character. Spells have to be added to quickslots in the grimoire and items to quickslots in inventory.

Keep Eduardo hired, he is well worth the money and a very reliable tank/okay damage dealer. If his health is low you don’t have to care, just dismiss him and rehire him at full HP.

When you come across the victim of the Arkham stabber, be sure to speak to the person standing next to the corpse and the 2 mafia guys that appear. In the hotel be sure to complete the dialogue with the weird old man when he appears. This will help you not sequence-break a key quest.

Turn vsync off and gfx settings on low/medium. I got far fewer crashes this way.

Действие игры разворачивается в вымышленном городе Аркхем, который после Чёрного дня оказался зажат между разными измерениями. Всё очень плохо — близится неизбежный конец света. Люди влачат жалкое существование, поэтому настроение у всех, мягко говоря, не очень.

В городе всем заправляют гангстеры и культисты, которые с одинаковой жестокостью могут убивать людей у всех на глазах прямо на улице — или в воспитательных целях выставить на всеобщее обозрение обезглавленный труп с поучительной табличкой. В некогда фешенебельном отеле все пьют и развратничают, в бывшем банке обитают психи, на складе — здоровенные гули. Также на улицах орудует Аркхемский потрошитель, жестоко изрубающий людей на куски.

Всё это сопровождается болезненно-жёлтой картинкой и тревожными звуками, шорохами и криками. И в то же время здесь часто играет джаз, люди преимущественно говорят на отличном литературном языке, в магазинах продаются книги Ницше и Шопенгауэра. А описание любой активной точки выглядят примерно так: «Стоявшее в разгромленном фойе в качестве скромного декоративного элемента интерьера, это сгнившее комнатное растение удачно подчёркивало окружающий его хаос».

То есть едва ли не главное, что удалось авторам Stygian, — это очень точно передать беспросветную и в то же время интеллектуальную атмосферу произведений Лавкрафта. Который, кстати, и сам иногда является нам во снах — пусть и под другим именем.

Чёрный человек

Атмосфера эта, впрочем, соткана не только из безумия, декаданса и депрессии, но также из надежды, пусть и совсем слабенькой. Именно она заставляет главного героя (или героиню) пуститься по следу загадочного Чёрного Гостя, который являлся накануне катастрофы и вроде бы что-то знал о грядущем. Кто он, что он, знает ли какие-то ответы, — долгое время мы находимся в неведении, отыскивая лишь странные стихи и статуэтки, а также встречая людей, утверждающих, что они тоже видели Чёрного Гостя.

Некоторые из тех, кто даёт такую надежду, оказываются лишь оболочкой из мёртвой плоти, под которой скрывается инопланетное чудище, жаждущее заполучить наши мозги (буквально, в баночке) и отправиться с ними к звёздам, в бесконечность чёрного космоса.

Также в процессе прохождения сюжета мы можем встретить полицейского, жаждущего отомстить за убитую прямо на улице лошадь (явная отсылка к Ницше); пообщаться с безутешной вдовой алкоголика, которая хочет уничтожить подконтрольную гангстерам винокурню; попытаться помочь фокуснику, чью ассистентку прямо на сцене зарезали бандиты; ответить на приглашение импозантного дворецкого и перенестись в Страну снов, чтобы попытаться пробудить его госпожу, Спящую Баронессу. В общем, работа явно не для посетителей курсов «Как выйти из депрессии»…

Безумие отчаяния

Негативное воздействие навыков отчаяния в основном сводится к тому, что персонаж быстрее теряет очки рассудка. А они в Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones очень важны — местами даже важнее очков здоровья. Потому что если сражений можно и нужно избегать (хотя есть и те, которых не миновать), то терять рассудок в игре по Лавкрафту, где ваш собеседник внезапно сбрасывает кожу и оказывается инопланетным монстром, вы будете постоянно. Увидели что-то ужасное, пережили страшный сон, попали в слишком тёмное помещение, стали свидетелем того, как в бою тяжело ранили или убили компаньона (а они тут все смертны) — и рассудок падает. А когда опустится до нуля, ваш персонаж окончательно окунётся в туман безумия, и игра закончится.

В любом случае психических проблем в Stygian не избежать. И все они дают разные эффекты — как положительные, так и отрицательные. Например, психопатия увеличивает шанс критического урона, но с каждым убийством в таком состоянии мы ещё больше теряем рассудок. То есть механика безумия прямо вплетена в геймплей, и иногда действительно сумасшедшим играть даже проще.

Восемь классов

И на варианты при решении квестов, и на запасы рассудка, и в целом на отыгрыш влияют класс персонажа, его возраст и мировоззрение. Понятно, что любой может кинуться в драку или попытаться, например, дать взятку. Но вот если вы захотите проскочить мимо в режиме скрытности, переубедить собеседника или, например, использовать своё искусство выживания, чтобы перепить несговорчивого оппонента, то тут уже в дело вступают классовые черты.

У каждого из восьми классов — а это артист, аристократ, гангстер, солдат, профессор, следователь, путешественник и оккультист — есть три ключевых навыка, которые лучше всего и прокачивать. В диалогах и разных квестовых ситуациях будут проводиться проверки на уровень того или иного умения и открываться соответствующие реплики и возможности. Так, у моего артиста основными были красноречие, скрытность и ловкость — их я и прокачивал в основном. Но в то же время встречались ситуации, где требовались развитые навыки дедукции, психологии, плутовства (для вскрытия замков, например), выживания, оккультизма, науки или медицины. И в целом никто не запрещает вкладываться и в них — классовых ограничений нет.

Молодой гуманист или старый нигилист?

На характеристики и умения класса также влияет прошлое героя. Артист мог быть киноактёром, жонглёром или бродячим актёром. И, конечно, именно первый больше всего нравится женщинам, но при этом он любит наркотики и быстрее привыкает к ним. А детектив из секретного отдела получит бонус к оккультизму, но и его отчаяние уже на старте вырастет аж на 50 очков. Впрочем, у каждого класса есть базовое прошлое, которое выбрано по умолчанию и не даёт никаких штрафов и бонусов.

Возраст персонажа определяет, насколько сильным и опытным он будет. Молодые получают плюсы к силе, ловкости или вниманию, но им выдаётся на два очка навыков меньше. У старых всё наоборот. И лишь те, кто находится в кризисе среднего возраста, начинают это болезненное приключение с базовыми показателями черт и навыков.

Наконец, про мировоззрение. Каждый персонаж может быть нигилистом, материалистом, гуманистом, эзотериком, рационалистом или верующим. И если вы выбираете в диалогах реплики, соответствующие именно этому мировоззрению, то это и очки опыта дополнительные даёт, и на рассудок положительно влияет. Никто, конечно, ничего опять же не запрещает, но если вы выбрали богобоязненного верующего, а потом начали рассуждать как махровый нигилист или материалист, то это негативно скажется на психике. То есть всё делается для того, чтобы вы выбрали определённую роль и отыгрывали именно её.

Драться надо, так не дерись!

Да и в сражении необязательно всех убивать, увеличивая своё отчаяние. Через какое-то время за спинами врагов появятся синие клетки, и если добраться до них, то мы совершим тактическое бегство, которое даёт те же трофеи и очки опыта и позволяет пройти дальше. Поэтому в некоторой мере у физически слабых персонажей в Reign of the Old Ones даже больше шансов выжить и не сойти с ума, чем у прирождённых солдат.

Если вы решили заночевать не в гостинице, а в чистом поле или на улице, то для костра нужно использовать припасы, которые также имеют свойство заканчиваться. Как и во многих играх на выживание, нужно распределить, кто и чем будет заниматься во время ночлега — охраной лагеря, физическими упражнениями (даёт соответствующие бонусы), изучением артефактов, чтением или болтовнёй с напарниками, что, как и чтение, благостно влияет на рассудок.

Хотя среди компаньонов у нас, мягко говоря, странные товарищи — оживший труп солдата Первой мировой или, к примеру, полубезумный бомж-оккультист, пытающийся снять родовое проклятие. В любой другой игре общение с ними скорее ещё больше затуманило бы рассудок, но в Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones, естественно, всё иначе. Более того, мы можем участвовать в решении их личных проблем и узнавать что-то об их прошлом, так или иначе влияя на уровень взаимной симпатии.

Симулятор выживания неврастеника

Возвращаясь к механикам выживания, нужно сказать, что нам также приходится постоянно закупаться алкоголем, который часто восстанавливает рассудок, и медпрепаратами, и даже наркотиками, дающими временные бонусы. А потом мы сталкиваемся с тем, что персонаж приобретает зависимость от всего этого. Также надо покупать керосин для фонаря, чтобы наш герой не пугался и не терял рассудок в темноте. Впрочем, расходники можно изготавливать и самому — если развиты навыки медицины, науки или оккультизма, под которые выделены свои ветки крафта, рецепты, формулы и чертежи.

Так вот, все эти механики выживания и микроменеджмент ресурсов в какой-то момент начали меня утомлять. Хочется сюжета, квестов, отыгрыша, а мы постоянно вынуждены мотаться по магазинам за припасами, консервами и пойлом, копить сигареты и постоянно рыться в мусоре в поиске чего-нибудь ценного. Учитывая, что персонажи движутся не очень быстро, и загрузки идут при каждом чихе, и технические ошибки случались (правда, я играл в пресс-версию, а в финальной обещали всё исправить), это, конечно, несколько раздражало.

С другой стороны, тут дело вкуса. Сам survival-геймплей работает и не сломан. А в случае с менеджментом очков рассудка это вообще классика всех «настолок» по Лавкрафту. Так что выживание логично вплетено в игровой процесс, тут вопросов нет. Просто мне кажется, что можно было бы в этом аспекте снизить градус хардкора, — считайте это моим старческим брюзжанием.

Ещё до релиза к Stygian было приковано повышенное внимание — слишком уж много вкусных вещей обещали авторы. Но при этом были и опасения — для независимой и никому не известной турецкой студии Cultic это дебютный проект. А в итоге мы получили игру, которая более всего — и даже больше, чем Torment: Tides of Numenera, — может считаться наследницей традиций Planescape: Torment. Во всяком случае, в том, что касается атмосферы упадка, литературности диалогов и квестов, необходимости избегать большинства сражений и богатства вариантов отыгрыша роли. Если в The Outer Worlds с этим будет хуже, то именно Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones лично для меня станет RPG года.

Плюсы: увлекательная, полная тайн и колоритных персонажей история; множество возможностей для нелинейного решения квестов и отыгрыша роли; лавкрафтовская атмосфера безумия и упадка; богатая ролевая система; интересные механики отчаяния и безумия, логично вплетённые в геймплей; шикарный джаз и в целом великолепная работа со звуком; отлично нарисованная картинка.

Минусы: местами кажется, что микроменеджмент ресурсов для выживания навязчив; бои идут очень медленно; не всё идеально с технической реализацией.

Archetype selection screen

This is your character’s profession and overall theme. The Archetype determines the set of skills at which your character will excel at during the game, as well as some of your role-playing options.

Distribute the available number of points to character’s Attributes and Skills.

The player can now modify their starting attributes and skills. Normally, players will have seven or nine attribute points and (depending on age) three, five, or seven skill points.

You can examine and finalize your character in this stage. Click Confirm to start the game or return to a previous step by clicking the arrow.

Character Summary screen

The final screen allows the player to review their choices before confirming them and starting the game.
