Alan Wilder on the recording of «One Caress»:
«That was meant to be just a B-side, but it turned out so well we thought we’d put it on the album.»
Martin Gore told Swedish magazine «POP» in 1993 (translated from Swedish):
«The best thing about it was that it was so spontaneous. [The string quartet] came in and played and I sang with them live. We recorded the song in three hours, usually every song takes about a month. I don’t share the belief that synthesizers and samplers aren’t real instruments, but there’s something special with musicians, real string players. They’ve studied many years to play their instruments. I felt within me that my music was suddenly taken more seriously. I know I shouldn’t feel that way. But however stupid it might sound, suddenly hearing ”real” musicians who have studied music for years performing your song makes it, in a way, come off as more serious. It’s just a feeling, and a false one. But it’s there.»

Definitely one of the most under appreciated songs of Depeche Mode’s entire career. In my opinion this song is the crown jewell of dark ballads.
My husband and I both love Depeche Mode. While his favorite singer is Dave, mine is Martin. And though we can argue about it endlessly, we both agree that their voices work so well together. This is my favorite DM song because it is set against the haunting strings and it showcases Martins voice so perfectly.
My favourite song is Never let me down again when Martin and Dave are singing together at the end.

Arguably the band’s most overtly Gothic moment, the «One Caress» music video is an evocative work of art. It’s dark visual style matches the suspenseful tone of the towering string composition.
The lyrics are among the most provocative Martin L Gore has ever written! Dropping ambigious hints at themes such as addiction & suicide, «One Caress» to me is a song which seems to be about death (via suicide) as a means to redeem a guilty soul. That the narrator (Gore) believes «sin can make a better man» speaks volumes as he is open to an offer of «eternal darkness». «One Caress» is driven by haunting strings which increase in both tempo & intensity as the song progresses. Martin L Gore sings wonderfully on what is my personal favourite Martin L Gore led song of Depeche Mode’s career.
The music video for «One Caress» features a distinctly autumnal atmosphere as it depicts, what is clearly to me, the tale of a ghost attending his own funeral before departing to «the other side» via a boat. There is so much religious symbolism in this particular video & all of which fit perfectly within the context of the «Songs Of Faith & Devotion» album.

As an artist myself I can say that while my own work carries with my personal intentions I do love hearing the interpretations of others regardless. I agree with you. Is a beautyful song about someone that wants to die. And the video lift up more the song. The Woods crowded with insects, is a clear reference of death, and Caronte’s boat, they even paid to abord it. This is art
