Идиома «to sing for one’s supper» (платить за то, что получаешь; зарабатывать себе на еду) произошла от идиомы-пословицы «no song, no supper» (прибл.: кто не работает, тот не ест; хочешь есть калачи, не лежи на печи). Т.е. буквально «to sing for one’s supper» – оплачивать свой ужин пением песни.
