Maid of Honor Duties: The Ultimate Checklist
Send this to your MOH, stat!
PHOTO BY LOGAN COLE / Design by Julie Bang
The responsibilities assigned to the maid of honor aren’t quite what they used to be. In case you hadn’t noticed, weddings are a lot different than they were when our mothers were young. Go back much further and bridesmaids served as decoys for the bride in case of an attempted kidnapping! Since most bridesmaids now are more girl squad than ransom bait, serving as the bride’s No. 1 means you’ll be on your toes in a very different way.
Who Is the Maid of Honor?
The maid of honor is in charge of the bachelorette party and bridal shower as well as leading the rest of the bridesmaids throughout the planning process and on the day of the wedding. A bride will typically appoint a sister, female relative, or best friend as the maid of honor.
We’ve tapped wedding planners Betsy Krug and Lindsey Nickel to share their advice for making the most out of your maid of honor experience.
Meet the Expert
• Betsy Krug is the co-owner and event director at Rebecca Rose Events, a destination wedding planning, floral design, and event production firm in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
• Lindsey Nickel is the owner and founder of Lovely Day Events, a boutique wedding planning company in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
Ahead, you’ll find a list of all the maid of honor responsibilities a bride may expect of you before the wedding and during it. Take a peek below, and get ready for the experience of a lifetime.
Before the Wedding
Maid of honor is a big job, and it starts long before the wedding day—pretty much the minute you’re asked. Here’s what you need to do in the months leading up to the main event.
Be There for the Bride
«The maid of honor should walk a fine line of being supportive, not overwhelming,» says Krug. «As the maid of honor, you know your friend, the bride, better than anyone else. After being asked, the maid of honor should initiate a conversation with the bride to discuss how best she can support her during the wedding-planning process. Be open about personalities and decide if the bride will delegate and ask for help or if the maid of honor should periodically check in and offer support without being prompted. Discuss the level of involvement and support upfront and be mindful of relationships the bride may need to navigate with family,» Krug says.
Don’t Forget to Have Fun
While your primary responsibility to the bride is to lend an extra set of hands, don’t forget to pencil in some fun, too. From an afternoon spent getting mani-pedis to a full-blown girls’ night out, the bride is first and foremost your best friend, and that’s the role you should take most seriously during the planning process. «The most important thing to remember is, as the maid of honor, you are tasked with supporting and loving your friend unconditionally,» Krug says.
Review the Budget
Before kicking off any planning for the bachelorette party or bridal shower, have a chat with the other bridesmaids to see how much they can afford to spend on these events. Don’t assume they’ll be able to cover the costs after you already have a girls’ getaway to Cancun scheduled in the books.
Go Wedding Dress Shopping
Ah, wedding dress shopping, perhaps the most anticipated event aside from the ceremony itself. Help the bride say «yes» to the dress by accompanying her to dress fittings and providing her with your honest opinion. As she travels from fitting room to fitting room, offer to help zip her up and hang dresses back on their hangers.
Order Your Dress on Time
The last thing you want is to find out your dress won’t arrive by the wedding day. Be sure to order it as soon as you can so that it arrives early for alterations and quality time in your closet.
Serve as the Point of Contact
Absorb as much wedding information as you can, and let the other bridesmaids, the bride’s family members, and even guests turn to you with any questions they may have. This will save the bride a lot of time and the stress of responding to text messages and emails about where and when events are taking place.
Before deciding when and where the bridal shower and bachelorette party will be, ask the bride for a list of dates she’s available. Then send out an online survey to the bridal party, so you can gauge when the most people will be available to attend.
Send an Intro Email to the Bridesmaids
Connect all the other bridesmaids with an email icebreaker that introduces each of you and includes everyone’s contact information. That way, everyone can get a taste of who’s who before the bachelorette party comes around.
Mediate Conflict Among the Bridal Party
As the maid of honor, you’ll be in charge of maintaining peace among the bridal party. On top of that, you’ll be assigning tasks concerning any pre-wedding events and answering any questions the bridesmaids may have regarding the wedding-day itinerary. Let the bridesmaids know they can come to you directly with any questions, comments, or concerns, and then you can jot them down, filter the ones you can answer out, and bring the rest to the bride when she has less on her plate.
Lend a Hand With DIY Projects
Does the bride need help addressing wedding invitations or DIY-ing her centerpieces or favors? Volunteer to help by planning a wedding DIY craft night, complete with her favorite bubbly.
Plan the Bachelorette Party
Get ready to lead the charge when it comes to planning the bridal shower and bachelorette party. From reaching out to family members and bridesmaids to helping with the nitty-gritty of planning and keeping everyone’s budgets in mind, you’ll quickly become the bonafide expert party planner during the wedding process. «Plan a bachelorette party that you know the bride will love and enjoy. Don’t feel pressure to create an event just to be social media worthy,» Krug says.
Prepare a Wedding Survival Kit
For every wedding event you attend, bring along a pack of bridesmaid essentials like Advil, Band-Aids, hair ties, safety pins, and other last-minute mini-emergency items that are frequently needed.
Keep Track of Gifts Received
If the bride decides to open gifts at her bridal shower, you’ll want to be sure to keep track of who gave her what. «One often overlooked responsibility, that the bride will really appreciate, is keeping a list of who gave what at the bridal shower, so that the bride can easily write thank-you notes,» says Nickel.
Prepare a Speech for the Reception
Some brides opt to have only family members give speeches at their receptions. Others forgo speeches entirely. As the maid of honor, you should always be game to deliver a speech—and not embarrass her during it. Start jotting down ideas months before the wedding and then spend a few weeks before the big day finessing it and putting everything together.
Choose the Tunes
One of the final things the bride will have on her to-do list is coming up with a reception playlist. Make a fun girls’ night out of the task, where you blast some tunes, drink some wine, and de-stress.
Offer to Pack for the Honeymoon
If the bride is overwhelmed the week before her wedding, offer to help her out with any last-minute items on her to-do list, such as packing her honeymoon suitcase or running to the store for an extra bikini or bottle of sunscreen.
Keep Everything Moving
While there’s a planner or coordinator to take the helm when it comes to the wedding day timeline—including all the events leading up to the wedding—you should still make an effort to pencil everything in. «However the maid of honor organizes her personal life, she should integrate reminders for her maid of honor duties. For example, if you use a Google calendar, add check-in dates for bachelorette planning, checking in with the bride, and sending reminders to the bridal party,» Krug says.
Day of the Wedding
This is the big day, and the maid of honor’s role is an all-day job. Here’s what to do the day-of.
Drop Off Any Reception Items
If things like toasting flutes, the couple’s registry book, candle lighting, seating cards, or wedding favors have not already been dropped off at the ceremony and/or reception venues, you should add this to your list of things to do on the morning of the wedding.
Keep the Bridal Suite Spick and Span
Once all the bridesmaids are done getting ready, it’s your job to make sure they clear their belongings out of the bridal suite, so that the newlyweds don’t return to a messy room at the end of the night.
Savor Every Moment
First and foremost, your role should be to keep the bride as calm as possible by providing emotional support. «Weddings are an emotional time. A bride designates her maid or matron of honor as her most cherished confidant to share in all the emotions of planning and celebrating a wedding,» Krug says. Alternatively, you’ll also want to help the bride relish in all the excitement. Keep the energy up by popping a bottle of Champagne while getting ready and having a toast with the entire bride squad before the ceremony.
Make Sure the Bride Remembers to Eat
Throughout the day–and certainly, before she leaves the bridal suite—you should check in periodically to see if the bride needs something to nibble on. While she may be too excited to think about food, a protein-rich snack will help fend off hunger pains.
The bride might not have a proper meal until the reception later, so a little a.m. sustenance will go a long way on this marathon day. Ask her to share some of her go-to snacks (be it croissants, potato chips, or granola bars) so that you can have the bridal suite fully stocked.
Be on Drink Patrol
If the bridesmaids plan on sipping some bubbly with the bride while they get glam, it’s the maid of honor’s duty to make sure everyone enjoys the moment but doesn’t overindulge. Make sure there’s water and snacks readily available, too.
Assist the Mother of the Bride
Don’t forget about the mother of the bride. From lending a hand with her hair and makeup to shuttling her water, snacks, and sips of Champagne, the mom of the bride has needs, too. If you or the bride suspect that she may, err, get in the way of things, be sure to have a list of backup plans to keep her busy. Activities may include greeting arriving guests, relaxing with her friends for a pre-ceremony cocktail, or doing a final walk-through to ensure all the décor is set.
Pitch in With Social Media
The bride will likely want the morning of her wedding to be as relaxed and unplugged as possible. Check with her first, of course, but this may be a good opportunity to snap behind-the-scenes shots of the Champagne toasts, happy tears, and even the moment she slips on her dress. «The maid of honor can help keep the celebration going by posting and tagging on social media. The bride usually isn’t able to snap photos on the wedding day,» Nickel says.
Don’t Let the Bride and Her Partner Cross Paths
Help the bride out by keeping an eye out for her partner if they’re following the tradition of not seeing each other before the ceremony. Touch base with the wedding planner or coordinator to make sure the two don’t cross paths before the dedicated moment. If the bride and her spouse opt to exchange gifts ahead of the wedding, do them a favor by making the exchange swift and smooth.
Help the Bride Get Dressed
It’s no small task to assist the bride as she gets into possibly the most expensive and elaborate gown she’ll ever wear in her life. You’ll want to be certain everything is laid out in advance, from undergarments to shoes to jewelry, so there’s no last-minute scrambling to find those heirloom earrings or an extra pair of hose.
Provide Assistance in the Ladies Room
This isn’t the most glamorous task, but the bride will appreciate it. She’ll likely need a little help getting her dress, heels, and hair into the ladies room for a final go before the ceremony begins. It’ll be a moment full of laughter and surely some tricky maneuvers, but it sure gives new meaning to BFF.
Serve as the Bride’s Personal Stylist
Don’t hesitate to jump right in and lend a hand during the getting-ready process, especially if the bride doesn’t have a planner or stylist to assist. From steaming last-minute wrinkles to making sure the veil is perfectly placed, there’s no shortage of details to keep an eye out for.
Have Your Hair and Makeup Plan Ready
Arrive on the wedding day with your beauty look already approved by the bride and have example photos for the stylists. That way, you can guide other members of the bridal party on how they should look to help move the whole process along.
Keep Her Partner’s Ring Safe
During the ceremony, typically it’s one of the best man’s duties to hold onto the wedding bands until it comes time for vows to be exchanged. But there’s a good chance you’ll be in charge of safekeeping one of those precious rings at some point on the big day. Be sure to guard that thing with your life.
Take Care of the Bouquet
Once the bride walks down the aisle, help her out by volunteering to hold her bundle of blooms. After she says «I do,» you can give the bouquet back for her to hold as she walks up the aisle.
Keep the Bride Hydrated
As the maid of honor, you’ll want to keep the bride hydrated from morning until the last dance. Be sure to check with the bride for her preference—sparkling or still—and remind her to take a few sips of H2O throughout the day. Doing so will keep her energy up and ward off any hangovers that could interfere with the morning-after brunch.
Round Up Friends and Family for the Wedding Photos
Trying to gather family members to take posed shots before or after the ceremony can get hectic. Offer to be an extra hand in moving the process along.
Keep Tabs on the Wedding Gifts
Help the bride out by ensuring all her wedding gifts, checks, and cards end up in her car or hotel room at the end of the night.
Dance With the Bride
You’ve made it to the reception when hopefully all the planning stress has melted away. Now it’s time to celebrate on the ballroom floor—grab the bride, your OG dance partner, for plenty of boogying to your favorite jams. Selfies welcome.

It’s hard to keep calm when your best friend is getting married! This is her day when you can tell just how happy you are that she found her one and only! Don’t be afraid to get a little emotional. Celebrate your feelings by adding some inspiring wedding wishes into your maid of honor speech for a best friend and don’t forget to drink in your good friend’s honor!
If you haven’t had the chance to meet me yet, my name is X. (Bride) and I have been best friends for about 10 years. We met in high school gym class, and we couldn’t stand each other at first. As you can see, things eventually changed for the better.
When (Bride) first asked me to be her Maid of Honor I felt flattered. But as the big day approached, she also told me to give a speech and a toast. I’m kind of the shy type and tried my best to get out of it. But, as (Groom) can tell you, it’s almost impossible to tell (Bride) No and get away with it.
I wanted to tell you both how absolutely spectacular you look today. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a better-looking couple (except for maybe my boyfriend and I).
And I hope you’re all having a lovely evening and I’d like to I wish you two all the love and happiness in the world. How blessed you are to celebrate your love on this beautiful day. I know there are many happy years ahead for you. Let’s all raise our glasses to the bride and groom, and wish them a lifetime of love and happiness!
I never had a sister, but (Bride) has been like a sister to me for all these years. We have similar tastes, we like similar clothes… I knew (Bride) had found the one when (Groom) walked into her life. Well, I’m fine with that – she saw him first!
Actually, you could see that it was love at first, second, and third sight. He is her Prince Charming and it seems to me he gives her all she needs – a strong arm, a sympathetic ear, and his credit card.
I met (Bride) 6 years ago, as we tried to survive in the concrete jungle of NY. To thrive there, your tribe is essential. We are quite protective of each other, so I was a bit skeptical of (Groom) when he first came into the picture. But as time goes by, I can’t imagine anyone else but him to be her one and only. They say that anyone can be passionate, but it takes a real pair of lovers to be silly. Well, together, (Bride) and (Groom) are two of the goofiest people I know.
Hello everyone, my name is X, and by my dress, you can tell that I am the Maid of Honor today. For many years, we have been through thick and thin, and we have shared many memories. Today is another great day to add to our collection of sweet memories, so I’m really looking forward to the cake!
I know you will have challenges as all relationships do. But you know what’s great about love and relationships and marriages? it is learning to grow together. Caring and sharing, and lots of tenderness. And maybe a bit of patience, or maybe even a lot. So let’s raise our glasses to the power of love, that makes all these wonderful things happen!
Today you start a completely new chapter of your lives. What can I say? Never forget the two most important replies: ‘you’re right, dear’ and ‘okay, buy it’. Love and cherish each other! These two are a rare find in today’s world. Here’s to the groom who has a bride so fair, and here’s to the bride with a groom who is so rare.

Writing a maid of honor speech is hard enough, but if you also happen to be the bride’s sister the pressure is huge! You grew up together and have shared so much it’s nearly impossible to decide what to include and what is too personal and should be left out.
Figuring out how to write a maid of honor speech for your sister can be truly confusing. To help put things into perspective, take a look at this great list of maid of honor speech for sister ideas to get your creative juices flowing.
As you may know, I am the bride’s younger sister. As we were growing up, I always wanted to be like her. Do the things she did, have the things she had – I was probably a bit annoying, I always wanted to tag along. She taught me how to care, how to share, and how to try to reach for the stars. And as I grew up I wanted to be just as beautiful, caring, smart, and successful as her.
(Bride) has always set an example for me to follow. Over the years she has shown me how to love and care. Today she shows me how to find a best friend, a partner, and a true lover, all in one person. I hope that I am just as lucky someday.
It’s a great happiness to find someone who loves you as much as (Groom) loves my sister. Today, I want to thank both of you for being a part of my life, and to celebrate the love you both share.
Like many sisters, we weren’t always best friends. I remember fights, screaming, and door-slamming, but I couldn’t have picked a better sister and a friend. Now that we are older, I can finally admit how happy I am to have grown up with such a great sister.
Having a sister is one of the greatest things in life. Having a little sister is even better because I liked to be bossy. (Bride) always wanted to be a bit more like me… But actually, there is so much that I admire about her! I have watched her grow into the gorgeous woman that she is. It is a great honor for me to be her big sister!
First of all, I want to thank you all for being here with us today. As most of you know I am (Bride’s) sister. As we grew, we were as close as can be. We were always in trouble and I remember wondering if there will be a guy brave enough for someone as wild as my sister is. Well, here he is!
My sis has just tied the knot. And I do believe that (Groom) is her perfect match. And today I realize that all she needs is a guy who will love her just the way she is, with all her craziness. Their commitment to each other inspires all of us because that’s what we call true love. So let’s raise our glasses to this amazing couple!
I want you to know that it took me 3 weeks to write this speech over and over again. And I couldn’t think of anything perfect enough to describe just how much I love you. I couldn’t find words to define the kind of sister you are to me. This is your big day and there is so much I want to say…
I Googled a lot of maid of honor speech examples. The one piece of advice I kept finding over and over again was to start off with a quote. I did some research and I think their love is best described by Dr. Seuss:
“You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep because the reality is finally better than your dreams.”
Love, be true to her; Life, be dear to her;
Health, stay close to her; Joy, draw near to her;
Fortune, find what you can do for her,
Search your treasure house through and through for her,
Follow her footsteps the wide world over –
And keep her husband always her lover.

Well, for those of you who I haven’t had the chance to meet yet, my name is [NAME]. [BRIDE] and I have been best friends for around the last 10 years. We first met at work one day, when she stole my carrot cake out of the fridge in the lunchroom and I threw away her pineapple yogurt cartons in revenge.
I never had a sister, but [BRIDE] has been my stand-in sister for all these years. You could say we are even closer than sisters. We don’t fight like sisters, but we do wear each other’s clothes. Somehow she can still fit into my clothes but I can’t fit into hers anymore. I’m sure that is just because her dryer must be shrinking them.
I knew [BRIDE] had found the one when [GROOM] walked into her life. Sure, she dated a few guys…after I was done torturing them.
But [GROOM] was different. Unlike those jerks, he was kind and thoughtful. And he had a job.
You could see that it was love at first, second, and third sight. Clearly [GROOM] is charming and it seems to me he offers her what she needs – a strong arm, a kind ear, and an American Express Black Card.
I trust [BRIDE] and [GROOM] completely. I remember the time I asked them to watch my dog Benji when I went skiing in Europe. They were so nice to help out. I got back and Benji was so happy to see me. He was 40 pounds lighter and now he sees a therapist twice a week.
Of course, we are having fun today. The test of this relationship will be over the long term. Will she still love [GROOM] when he leaves his underwear on the floor and cuts his toenails at the dinner table?
The answer is no. God, please, disgusting.
No, seriously, I know they will have challenges as all relationships do. And [GROOM] will learn what all men learn eventually. Keep your wife happy! Happy wife, happy life.
No, really, what’s great about love and relationships and marriage is learning to grow together. The communication it takes to keep a marriage going is massive. But half the fun is working things out, talking, communicating, and launching kitchen appliances at each other – real love.
Today has been a great day. Family and friends are here, the sun is shining and the champagne is flowing. And we’ll need it to get through this chicken dinner.
How to Write a Maid of Honor Speech
Tips for knocking your maid of honor speech out of the park.

You’ve been asked to play a huge role in your best friend’s wedding—maid of honor! But the job comes with a slew of important tasks, including giving the maid of honor speech. While this is a moment to celebrate your friendship, the idea of getting up in front of a crowd can be nerve-wracking if you’re not used to giving speeches.
As staunch advocates of BFF love, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to create a go-to guide for penning the perfect speech to see your bestie off on their new life with their partner. With a few tips and tricks along with plenty of practice, your maid of honor speech will go off without a hitch.
With expert insight from professional speechwriter Katelyn Peterson—founder of vow- and toast-writing company Wedding Words—and examples of real-life speeches, we have all the details you need. Read on for helpful tips and guidelines to deliver an absolutely unforgettable maid of honor speech.
Maid of Honor Speech Template
While every maid of honor speech will be different, we’ve put together an outline to get you started on yours.
Start with the bride; end with the couple. Of everyone at the wedding, you have the best insight into how much your bestie’s partner has changed them for the better. Your speech needs to be about the friend you knew long before meeting their soulmate and then pivot to what role they have played in their life. Maybe your friend is even funnier now, or maybe you’ve simply never seen your BFF so happy. This is also a great way to incorporate their new spouse into the speech if you don’t really know them that well; speak to the way that they complement each other or how your BFF’s new spouse has made them a better person.
Pepper in anecdotes. Stories do a better job of getting your point across than blanket statements do. «Each anecdote you share should have an underlying theme that ties all the short stories together,» says Peterson. «Reveal that theme near the end of your speech, and you’ll achieve a strong emotional impact.»
End with a positive outlook. The nature of this speech is not so much about your relationship with your friend, but the bond the couple shares. Make sure all of the separate components of your toast draw a positive conclusion, ending in how happy the couple is together and your best wishes for their marriage.
Maid of Honor Speech Tips
Keep in mind these helpful tips from professional speechwriter Katelyn Peterson to ensure you nail your maid of honor toast.
Brainstorm. Kick-start the creative process by writing down any memories, emotions, or ideas that make you think of your BFF. «I recommend free-writing for 20 minutes,» says Peterson. «When you’re done with this exercise, you should have some quality material that you can weave into the form of a speech.» This allows you to create a blueprint of all the major points you want to make—more or less creating a roadmap for your ideas—and then fill it in with supporting information.
Ditch generic praise. «Use entertaining and engaging stories to show the bride’s personality,» advises Peterson. There’s a big difference between simply saying, «She is such a great friend!» versus telling a story that illustrates just that.
Half the guests may not know your BFF all that well, so use this moment to paint a picture of how amazing they are. Bring their character to life with details only you could know.
Remember it isn’t about you. While a lot of the anecdotes should be about your time with your friend, you should not be the focal point. After you briefly introduce yourself (remember: most of the people probably won’t know who you are or your relation to the couple), you shouldn’t be making any additional references to yourself. You’re simply the vehicle to explain why the newlyweds are so fantastic.
Do not mention exes. No one wants to be reminded of past relationships, particularly in front of their family, friends, and new life partner. Keep the tone of your speech positive, and it will reflect positively on you also. You don’t want to come across as though you’re trying to roast your friend.
Keep it short. The longer your speech, the more opportunities you’ll have for people to start losing attention. «Keep your speech under five minutes,» suggests Peterson. «Anywhere between two to five minutes is great.»
Pause. Be sure to pause for a few seconds after each joke to let the audience laugh. When you immediately start speaking right afterward, you won’t give people a chance to laugh or even understand the next line. Keep in mind that starting the speech on a funny note can help you capture the attention of the audience for a minute or two, but it’s the meaningful content that will keep them enthralled until the end. «Your goal should be to have guests laughing and wiping tears away by balancing humor with sincerity,» says Peterson.
If you experience public-speaking jitters, try looking just above everyone’s head. This can minimize your anxiety while allowing guests to think you’re looking right at them.
Don’t use inside jokes. If the joke or situation is something other wedding guests would have to be there to understand, avoid using it. If people don’t understand the context behind it, it will probably go over their heads. It’s okay to poke a little bit of fun at your friend, but keep it light. Don’t say anything that would be embarrassing or make them feel uncomfortable.
Practice. «The more you recite your speech out loud, the more comfortable you’ll become,» notes Peterson. Practice your speech twice a day, starting at least a week beforehand, and record yourself a couple of times so you can hear your pacing and tone. Rehearse the speech in front of friends, too, in order to see if your jokes get a laugh, and try practicing in a mirror to nail your physical presence.

Maid of Honor Speech Examples to Make Your Own
«Good evening, everyone. I’m Cami, the maid of honor and the bride’s best friend. Over the past 15 years, I’ve witnessed Madison prioritize everyone else’s happiness, but today, we get to honor hers. With Madison being my most fun-loving friend, I knew she’d be down to join me on a two-week adventure traveling throughout Europe. We lived together, but nothing cements a friendship quite like sharing a full-size bed in dingy hostels from the Netherlands to Spain. Madison’s luggage kept breaking, and she went through four suitcases in 14 days! There we were, strolling down a busy street in Madrid and Madison’s clothes were falling out of her over-packed suitcase, painting the path behind us with her sundresses and socks. But she never let her rundown luggage ruin the trip. She just kept rolling with it. Literally. I can always depend on Madison to roll with any situation, to show up for the people that she loves, and to have a good time.
She has this belief that the more she can give you, embrace you, and love you—the better off she is.
But the truth is everyone in this room is better for knowing you, Madison. You love so deeply, selflessly, and unconditionally. And I know that Pete is the best partner for Madison because I’ve seen him mirror these traits for her. No matter what may come your way, your combined patience, resilience, and love will make you an unstoppable team. And most importantly, I know you two will continue to keep rolling with it. Cheers!» —Cami
«I’m Ashley and welcome! I was introduced to Sarah through a mutual friend to evaluate if she would be a fit as my future roommate. I showed up to that first dinner wearing a casual sundress and flats. Meanwhile, Sarah walked in with voluminous curls, smoky eyes, red lipstick, and a smile that showed me she deserved that Miss Florida title in ’04. I just thought, ‘Who is this girl?’ Over the next two hours, I learned that this girl was the coolest, funniest person and that I had to live with her. We moved in and it was truly an immediate fit from watching the same shows to downing bottles of the same wine. Despite our homebody nature, we did enjoy our Saturday nights running around the city. One night after several margaritas, Sarah and I found ourselves locked out of our house. So we came up with the best plan we could imagine: Let’s cannonball into our pool. There we were: Two tequila-loving girls cannonballing to see who could create the biggest splash. From that night on, whenever we went out, we’d ask ourselves one key question: ‘Is it going to be a cannonball in the pool kind of night?’
Inspiring joyful moments is what Sarah does for everyone else in her life, and it makes me happy to know that her new husband will do exactly that for her.
And just like she’s always filled the gap in our friend group—we know that John has entered her life to level her out in the best of ways, too. Let’s raise a glass to Sarah and John! May your life together be full of cannonball-in-the-pool kind of nights.» —Ashley
«Hi, my name is Makena and I’m the bride’s younger sister and maid of honor. As I look at Winnie and Miles today, I see two people in the most loving, trustworthy, and nurturing relationship I’ve ever witnessed. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to me that even on her wedding day, Winnie is teaching me about life and love. Because the truth is Winnie has been my lifelong teacher. She’s the one who taught me how to read and how to ride a bike, but my most memorable teaching moment was when I was 11 years old. We had this mutual understanding—or so I thought—that we would not read each other’s journals. But I, of course, read hers and naively assumed she did not read mine. I learned the truth when I opened my journal one day to see an entire page filled with Winnie’s handwriting. There in the middle of my journal was a critique from my sister detailing out how I could improve my writing.
That’s one of the things I love and admire about Winnie: She inspires the people around her to be the best versions of themselves.
I know that if it weren’t for my sister, I would not be the person I am today. I’m inspired daily by the woman she is. Her confidence is unshakable, her excitability is contagious, and her determination is awe-inspiring. Winnie will finally get to experience what I’ve felt like my entire life with her. She’ll be cared for, unconditionally loved, and will learn every day with Miles as her lifelong teacher through love. Please raise a glass to Winnie and Miles! May you two never stop learning from each other as you continue to love each other.» —Makena
First things first, don’t over complicate it! Stay authentic to yourself and keep it simple by telling a story, sharing why you love the bride, and toasting to the newlyweds.
Keep it short and sweet! Having a two to five minute speech that is both sentimental and humorous is the best way to honor the couple in a way that is engaging and memorable.
Close out your speech with a simple, light-hearted joke and a toast to the newlyweds. This will create the perfect opportunity for a combined cheer and chuckle from the crowd.
The Maid of Honor Duties Checklist You Need to Bookmark ASAP
The list of maid honor duties and responsibilities is QUITE extensive—here’s legit everything you need to know as a (first-time or veteran) maid of honor.
If you’ve been asked to be a maid of honor (or matron of honor), first of all, congrats! This is a big honor, and can be fun and exciting. Just in case you aren’t clear on the definition, the maid of honor is defined as the bride’s right hand woman throughout her engagement and wedding day, leading the rest of the bridesmaids in their own duties. The bride will typically tap her BFF, sibling or other close friend to serve in this important role, because of the wide range of hats a maid of honor will have to wear: confidant, assistant, voice of reason, shoulder to cry on, if needed, as well as bridesmaid leader (and sometimes wrangler). As such, there are a slew of maid of honor duties and responsibilities that fall under the MOH’s purview.
So what does a maid of honor do, exactly? Maid of honor duties include planning the bachelorette party, making sure the bridesmaids dresses are ordered in a timely fashion, serving as the point person on the wedding day, giving a speech at the reception, being a model wedding guest (RSVP-ing on time, reserving travel and hotel with the room block early) and so, so much more. If you’ve never served as maid of honor before (or even if you have), and aren’t sure of the exact maid of honor duties associated with the job, pre-wedding and during the big event, don’t worry — we’ve got you covered.
During the coronavirus pandemic in particular, maid of honor duties may become even more essential—helping your bestie during what’s no doubt a stressful time, especially if she’s had to postpone or make changes to her event. You may be asked to help reach out to guests to communicate a postponement or other updates, or simply support your friend as she figures out the best plan of action.
Check out our ultimate list of maid of honor duties and responsibilities to help you get started.
Maid of Honor Duties Before the Wedding Day
1. Lend a helping hand (and ear) to the bride
Some brides will ask a lot of their maids of honor during the wedding planning process, from helping them put together their invitations to choosing cake flavors to talking through potential color schemes (psst, here are the trendy wedding colors and palettes you need to know). Other brides may want to handle the bulk of pre-wedding responsibilities themselves—or hire a wedding planner who will take care of most of it for them. Whatever the case, the main maid of honor responsibility is to be there to assist the bride with any tasks she needs help with — or simply be there to listen to ideas, and provide suggestions and advice.
2. Attend wedding dress shopping and fittings
The bride may or may not ask the maid of honor to accompany her wedding dress shopping and to her dress fittings, but many brides do like to have the maid of honor present for this outing.
3. Lead the bridal party
There’s a lot that goes into being a bridesmaid, too. The maid of honor serves as the point person for any bridesmaid-related questions or concerns—usually starting and leading the email thread on which the bridal party discusses all of the wedding-related details.
4. Be the bridesmaid dress and style guru
The maid of honor not only assists the bride with choosing the bridesmaid dresses, but also should make sure that all of the ‘maids order their dresses and accessories in a timely fashion. Other tasks related to leading the bridal party may include confirming hair and makeup appointments, helping to coordinate travel and accommodations for the crew, and more.
5. Be a point person for guests
Wedding guests tend to have lots of questions. Where’s the couple registered? What’s the address of the venue? Is there a post-wedding brunch? Most of this information should be listed on the couple’s wedding website, but there are some guests who aren’t computer-savvy and may need some additional assistance. As the maid of honor, you can answer guests’ questions and provide essential information as needed.
6. Host or co-host the bridal shower
One of the most important maid of honor duties is hosting the bridal shower with help from the bridesmaids. From picking a venue to choosing décor, sending invitations to ordering food, planning a bridal shower can be a big job, so don’t be afraid to delegate some of the responsibility to the rest of the bridal party. At the actual bridal party, the maid of honor writes down all of the gifts received so that the bride can easily write thank-you notes.
7. Plan the bachelorette party
The maid of honor should work with the rest of the bridesmaids to put together a bachelorette party that the bride will never forget. Whether you’re planning a destination bachelorette party or something closer to home, keep the bride’s personality in mind to create a memorable event.
8. Attend pre-wedding events
While the maid of honor doesn’t usually plan the engagement party, rehearsal, and rehearsal dinner, she is usually in attendance at these events.
Maid of Honor Duties on the Wedding Day: Pre-Ceremony
1. Get dressed with the bridal party and bride
Time to get ready! The maid of honor usually gets ready with the bride and the rest of the bridal party in the bridal suite, and can play a big role in helping the bride get dressed and making sure everyone looks picture-perfect on the big day.
2. Serve as messenger between the couple
If the almost-married couple is exchanging love notes or gifts the morning of the wedding, a maid of honor responsibility could be to serve as the go-between, along with the best man. The maid of honor visits the bride’s future spouse, and hands over the note and/or gift—and of course, reports back on the reaction!
3. Prepare and bring an emergency kit for the bride
There are lots of mini-emergencies that can occur before the wedding, and it’s important to be prepared! The maid of honor should create a wedding-day emergency kit filled with items that may come in handy—from safety pins to fashion tape, bandaids to pain relievers.
4. Have all vendors’ contact information nearby
The bride’s goal should be to relax and enjoy the morning of her wedding—not stress over last-minute details! The maid of honor can help communicate with wedding vendors if need be, though wedding planner or venue coordinator is usually on top of wedding-related issues as well.
5. Keep the bride calm
If bride starts to seem a bit stressed, it’s one of the maid of honor duties to keep the mood light. Play music, tell a funny story, watch silly cat videos, whatever it takes to keep the crew happy and laughing!
6. Help keep things on schedule
The maid of honor should make sure the bride or wedding planner provides you with a full wedding timeline and keep your eye on the clock! If the bridesmaids are focusing more on chatting than getting ready (especially if they’ve had some champagne or other drinks throughout the day!), gently remind them that the limo will be leaving for the ceremony in ten minutes. Try to make sure that everyone is where they need to be on time.
Maid of Honor Duties on the Wedding Day: Ceremony
1. Walk down the aisle
It’s time for the maid of honor’s big moment in the spotlight! You’ll likely walk down the aisle after all of the bridesmaids, and before the flower girl and ring bearer, and bride.
2. Arrange the bride’s train and veil upon her arrival to the altar
Once the bride arrives to the altar, make sure that her dress and veil look great and make any needed adjustments before the ceremony begins.
3. Hold the bride’s bouquet
The maid of honor should be responsible for holding both her own and the bride’s bouquets during the ceremony—particularly during the exchange of the rings. The bridal bouquet can be pretty heavy, so enlist a fellow bridesmaid if you need to take a break from holding the bouquet during the ceremony.
4. Hold the groom’s ring
In an opposite-sex wedding, if there is no ring bearer, the best man will hold the bride’s wedding band, and the maid of honor holds the groom’s band until the rings are exchanged.
5. Sign the marriage license as witness
Right after the ceremony, the officiant and the newlyweds will sign the marriage license. Two witnesses are also required, and usually the maid of honor and best man take on the role of witness as well.
Maid of Honor Duties on the Wedding Day: Reception
1. Stand next to the groom in the receiving line (optional)
Many couples choose not to have receiving lines these days, but if there is one, the maid of honor stands next to the groom and greets guests as they enter the reception.
2. Enter the reception with the best man
If the emcee is introducing the wedding party members as they enter the reception, the maid of honor usually enters with the best man. Whether or not you choose to do a silly dance as you enter is your call!
3. Help bustle the bride’s train—and use the restroom!
Before the wedding, it’s a good idea to learn how to bustle the bride’s gown—her bridal salon or seamstress can give a quick tutorial if you’re able to attend a dress fitting. Bustling the bride’s gown will help keep her dress’ train clean and make her dress more comfortable to dance in.
If the bride’s gown is particularly cumbersome, you might be enlisted to help the bride use the restroom. That’s what friends (and maids of honor) are for, right?
4. Play host
As before the wedding, guests will likely have questions during the event. Where’s the guest book? When’s the cake cutting? Where do I sit? Where can I put my gift? Part of the maid of honor’s role is to help answer questions and direct guests. And while guests are supposed to give their gifts directly to the newlyweds or place them on the gift table, you may be entrusted with a gift or two. Make sure any gifts are properly placed in a safe location.
5. Dance with the best man
One of the most important maid of honor duties is to have a great time and spend a lot of time on the dance floor. To help kick things off, the maid of honor traditionally dances with the best man for the song immediately following the first dance. If this seems a bit too formal or isn’t your style, no worries! Just be sure to be one of the first people on the dance floor, and encourage others to dance too!
6. Make sure the bride stays stress-free
If any mini-crises occur during the reception, don’t let on to the bride and groom. They should focus on enjoying the reception, not that the bride’s cousin got sick in the bathroom or the cake almost toppled over.
7. Give a toast after the best man
The maid of honor usually gives a speech after the best man. The maid of honor speech is usually relatively short, relaying about the bride, and her love and respect for the couple. As long as the speech comes from the heart, it’s sure to be a hit.
8. Make sure the bride eats and drinks
The last thing anyone wants to encounter is a hangry bride. Make sure that the bride eats and be sure to refresh her water glass throughout the night to keep her hydrated.
9. Collect wedding gifts if necessary
Before the wedding, find out where the couple would like their gifts to be transported after the reception. Ensure that the couple’s gifts end up in the right hands and in the correct location when the reception is over.
10. Tie up any other loose ends
From making sure the bride’s wedding gown is properly stored to ensuring that the top tier of the wedding cake ends up in a freezer, talk to the couple about any end-of-the-night duties they’d like the maid of honor to help complete.
11. Help the couple during and post-honeymoon
As the couple heads off on their honeymoon, see if there are any ways you can assist them—particularly if you live nearby. Perhaps you can check in on their house once in a while, dog sit, or bring over groceries before they head home. By helping the newlyweds out after the wedding, you’re showing that you’ll be there for them for life.

What is a maid of honor speech? Why is it so scary?
It is a practice at the wedding reception when the bride-appointed maid of honor formally addresses the couple in front of wedding guests. It is a major part of the maid of honor duties for the wedding day. She expresses her congratulations and appreciation during her speech. It ends with some sort of declaration and a drink is taken (maid of honor toast).
It could be a little nerve-wracking because of the whole public speaking thing, but with the right tools and preparation, you could get over this factor when making your maid of honor speech. Out of all of the maid of honor responsibilities, the speech is the most important.
Let’s break down the maid of honor speech into several factors, the types of speeches, the timing of the speech, and things to cover in the speech.
Types of maid of honor speeches
There are many unique styles for a MOH speech. There, are funny ones, emotional ones, unique ones, and even short maid of honor speeches you could go for.
The type of maid of honor speech is determined by the speaker. If the maid of honor is the bride’s sister, best friend, a close relative (like a cousin). It all depends on your relationship with the bride and your personality.
For example, If you are an extrovert, and have known the bride since childhood, you may be more comfortable speaking a little longer because you are familiar with the bride’s family and friends.
Or if you are a more introverted maid of honor, who is the bride’s close friend from college, you may want to take a different approach to your speech.
Timing of maid of honor speech
Wedding speeches always begin after the meal of the reception. It’s typically the maid of honor’s turn to say her speech after the father of the bride or the best man.
How long should your maid of honor speech be? Your speech should be about 3-7 minutes long. That is enough time to give enough insight, but not too long where guests may get distracted or have side conversations.
What to cover in your speech?
Talk about the bride first. Congratulate her and offer her your sincerest well wishes for a happy union. You should tell a personal story about the bride. Give characteristics of the bride that tell why she is so amazing. Share a brief history of the happy couple. And end with more well wishes by giving a toast.
During your talk, be sure to include jokes, and tell fun facts about the bride or the couple. Interact with guests by pausing. This gives time to respond or react you parts of your speech.
Last minute add in to your speech:
Although prepping your speech should happen pre-wedding, you may want to talk about how amazing it was to see the bride walk down the aisle and get married. This part will not be in the initial speech you’ve prepared, but it adds a nice touch of originality. Don’t feel limited to only your written speech.
How to write a maid of honor speech for the best wedding toast
Now we will take a closer look at what to cover in your maid of honor speech. Let’s go through each point and elaborate more on how you could use them.
7 Steps For the Perfect MOH Speech
WHAT NOT TO DO!
Please know that there is nothing set in stone. If you want a short and sweet maid of honor speech, just subtract some of the sentences or paragraphs from each section.
For example, you could shorten number 3 significantly by reducing the number of paragraphs you write in your speech. Lastly, be sure to recite your speech in front of a small crowd like the bridal party or a relative.
Be sure to practice your speech way ahead of time so that you are prepared.

Maid of honor speech for best friend
“Hi, I’m Shante, I am Ariana’s maid of honor. I’ve known Ariana since college and since then, my life has changed for the better she is really one of my favorite people and one of the best humans on this planet.
When you ask me to be your maid of honor I was overjoyed. The first thing I thought about was the bachelorette party! I cannot put into words how much you mean to me. You know that I’m so happy for you and_____. And I will be rooting for your relationship for the rest of my life.
When I met you I was going through such a difficult time you’ve taught me to be strong and always strive to be my best self. There were times when I would almost lose it, then a phone call from you would make things so much better.
One of my favorite memories was when we went to the B2K concert and got backstage pass security. And we got to meet Omarion. We didn’t sneak in nor did we pay for passes. We got in all because you weren’t scared to just walkthrough. I followed you in, and because of your bravery, audacity, and fearlessness, I got to have one of the best nights of my life.
Groom, this is what you’re dealing with here! She’s a woman who was bold, fearless, and a badass!
My wish if I get to have one is for everyone to have an Ariana in their life. She is the most loving and caring person that I’ve ever met. Her heart is a reflection of what she does. And all she wants to do is take care of everyone around her. At the end of the day, she just wants everyone to love one another.
When you got engaged, I knew that this would be the best decision you’ve ever made. The smile you both put on each other’s faces are fascinating and I pray that you both remain happy forever.
Thank you so much for letting me be a part of this and I want to wish you all the love and happiness int.
Now let’s toast to the bride and the groom!“
Maid of honor speech for sister
“Hello, my name is LeCole, Tasha’s little sister. Tash, You have been my backbone. The foundation for our family. I do not know where I would be without you.
I am so happy for you and Kwame and want to tell you both congratulations on your union. I know you guys will have so many wonderful moments together in your marriage.
Tash, when mom died you really showed me, our brother, and your son that nothing would ever break our bond. As long as we have each other, everything will be okay. Going through such a traumatic thing like that should have made us all statistics. But because of you taking care of us, we are now successful people. You’ve made us examples of what good could come from a bad situation.
Now that we are adults all we want is for you to be happy and loved. And we know you’ve got that with Kwame. And Kwame, get used to sister tattoos, sister bracelets, and hair emergencies. Welcome to the family!
Now that you’re officially a part of our cult, cheers to you both!“
Funny maid of honor speech
“Hello my name is Tammy and Carla is my best friend And we’ve known each other since elementary school. She’s my best friend, confidant, and sometimes therapist. I am so happy that you picked me to be by your side on this marvelous journey. You are an amazing friend and there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you…. Even this sappy maid of honor speech (LOL).
I will try not to cry because I’m a very ugly crier and I don’t wanna ruin any photos (LOL). I want to wish you and Tony many many years of happiness. You deserve the best that life has to offer in love and marriage.
If you ask Carla about some of our adventures she’s probably a little hesitant (LOL). There are countless times that she is saving me from making a bad decision. For the times she’s made me laugh uncontrollably on what I thought was a bad day.
Carla, it’s clear that everyone’s life is just better with you in it. Watching you go after your career and climb the corporate ladder and do wedding planning all in the same year has inspired me to be better and reach for the stars in life. because of you, I did manage to wear a real pair of pants this week, so there’s my progress in life’s achievements (LOL).
But in all seriousness, you have such a beautiful soul. She is someone I look up to because she is a positive influence in my life.
You know you’re a good person when someone’s pet prefers you over their owner. My dog absolutely loves Carla and would leave with her every time if she could. I mean seriously she would leave me for Carla any day LOL.
I know you will make a great wife and you two make a wonderful couple.
Umm…I think this is the part where I give relationship advice but I am 28 and single so I’m no help in that department (LOL).
I want to end this by doing an activity with the couple. Carla put your hand on the table. Tony put your hand over Carla’s………
……..Take a good look Tony, and savor this moment. Because this will be the last time that you will EVER have the upper hand (LOL).
God Bless you both! Raise your glasses for Mr. and Mrs. Davis!“

HOW TO WRITE A MAID OF HONOR SPEECH
Introduce yourself – now, most of them know you, but not all. Always start by introducing yourself. Tell them about you and give them a little insight of your whereabouts. Sure, you are the maid of honor, they want to know about you.
Start with the bride – the main section starts now. Tell them things about the bride. Now these should be some things that sound wonderful and cute about her. Do not spill out anything that will make her or anyone feel awkward.
Tell them the love story – since you are the BFF, you know what the bride thought when she met her soul mate. This is between you both. Its time you let them know too. Include things that are cute and normal. BFFs talk all kind of stuffs with each other. Make sure you don’t tell anything that you are not supposed to tell.
A humor here and there but not forced – your speech should be a heart touching one. You must always get in some humor in it. However, if you purposely try to be humorous for then it will show. Moreover, it becomes awkward for all.
Share some words of advice – being a bestie means you will always have to keep the guy on his toes to keep your bestie happy. Tell him some of her habits that might turn out to be annoying for him if he doesn’t know.

How Long A Maid Of Honor Speech Should Be?
Neither you want to make people yawn in boredom with an hours-long speech nor do you want to blabber away and finish it as soon as you started. So how long should you keep your speech is the question. Methinks, 2 to 3 minutes only and at the most 5 minutes. It seems like a very short time but believe me, when you start writing your speech for this much period of time, only two to three lines wouldn’t suffice. So no girl, don’t breathe a sigh of relief yet. Because you need to be the best storyteller for these 2-3 minutes that you will be standing there.
The Do’s And Don’ts Of Maid Of Honor Speech
You have been given a chance to speak your heart out but hey, there are some things that you should not blurt out, especially if you have had some extra glasses of champagne that you shouldn’t have had! Imagine the horror! So let’s not let it come to that and concentrate on what are the do’s and don’ts of maid of honor speech.
Do Introduce Yourself
This is something trivial but many times we forget to introduce ourselves before giving a speech, especially out of nervousness. And yes, you are the maid of honor but how would the guests know if you are the bride’s sister or her best friend or maybe a cousin. So make sure you do not forget to introduce yourself in the beginning.
Don’t Include Inside Jokes
Yes, a couple of inside jokes are fine where you can share some secret smiles with the bride but you don’t want to overdo it. You will be giving a speech to a room full of people, so don’t make them feel confused over what you are saying. Or else you will lose their attention.
Do Make It Personal and Lighthearted
You are the maid of honor, which means that you share a special bond with the bride. She must know you inside out and you, her. You both might have had some funny and memorable incidents which you always reminisce of. Include those crazy stories but not the too crazy ones. You don’t really want to tell the guests what you did one night when you both got too drunk… Wink!
Don’t Be Cynical
Regardless of your notions regarding love and marriage, don’t let the anti-marriage thoughts flow into your speech. Even if you are trying to explain how the love between the bride and groom reinstated your faith in love, don’t go there. People might not like a speech where anything goes against the notion of happily ever after. And don’t even dare to use the word ‘Divorce’ or may God save you from the wrath!
Do Carry Notecards
Whether you can’t remember because of nervousness or you simply don’t have a sharp memory to remember a 3-5 minutes long speech, don’t let such a small thing come in between your perfect maid of honor speech. Make note cards with bullet points and carry them with you. You can either keep them on the table in front of you, hidden from everyone’s eyes or simply hold them in your hands.
Don’t Mention Dreaded Ex!
You don’t want to make people awkward or the bride and groom uncomfortable by speaking about the ex-boyfriend(s) of the bride. She might just dump you and you could end up being the ‘ex’! So make sure you don’t talk about the past relationships of the bride.
Do Praise The Groom
The wedding day is also important for the groom. So though you are to talk more about the bride, include the groom in your speech as well. Share a few words of appreciation for him. Even if you don’t know the groom too well, make sure you take help from the bride to talk about him or just keep it simple and tell him how lucky he is to have your best friend and wish him good luck.
Don’t Drink Champagne Like Water
All the secrets that you have buried inside might come tumbling out or you might just blabber non-sense if you don’t get a control over how much you drink on the wedding day. So don’t get drunk, not at least before your speech even if you are too much nervous that you feel like drinking gallons of alcohol.
Do Cheat A Little
It is completely all right to steal some content from wherever you can to make the best MOH speech. Nobody expects you to be a writer and sometimes even they can’t get it right. Trust me! So grab a good quote from here, some good lines from there and start making a speech. As long as you give it your personal touch, tweak it a little and make it a little funny, it would be perfect.

Difference between a bridesmaid and the maid of honour
Choosing your bridal party can be equal parts fun and stressful. You want to be surrounded by your best gals, but there’s lots of other things that come into play – from existing expectations among friends and family, to the strength of different relationships. Here’s the difference between bridesmaids and your maid of honour.

So who – and how – do you choose to fill these VIP spots? Is it the longtime friend from school, or the one you see every day? Someone for whom you were a bridesmaid or a favourite cousin who lives in the next town. Do you have 10 bridesmaids or just go for three?
As you can see, there’s a lot to consider. And that’s before you get around to assigning the most important role of them all – that of the Maid of Honour. To help you understand the difference, and pick the right person for each role, we’ve compiled this handy guide, but remember, the first person to come to mind for each role may not be the best person to carry out each role, so choose carefully!
What does a bridesmaid do?
Numbers wise there’s no minimum or maximum limit imposed, although couples often choose to have an equal number of attendants. Where you have only one bridesmaid, they will serve as the Maid of Honour.
In the lead-up to the wedding, some of the tasks brides traditionally seek help with include addressing and stuffing envelopes, going dress shopping, or getting involved in DIY projects, whether it’s creating personalised ceremony programs or making decor elements for the reception. Bridesmaids can also help out with tasks such as recording details of gift givers during events such as the engagement party.
On the actual day, they will support the Maid of Honour in looking after the bride, can help look after junior attendants, will circulate at the wedding to ensure guests feel included, dance with their opposing groomsman, and also answer guest queries.
This article looks closely at the role of a bridesmaid.
What does a Maid of Honour do?
The Maid of Honour (or Man of Honour, where applicable) serves as the chief bridesmaid. She acts as the bride’s key personal attendant both during the engagement and on the big day, with an aim to reduce stress wherever possible and lend a hand or opinion whenever needed.
In the lead-up to the wedding, the MOH will traditionally host events such as the bridal shower or kitchen tea and also plan the hen’s night. She can also help corral, and delegate to, bridesmaids wherever a hands-on effort is needed, for example if the favours are being home made.
On the wedding day itself, her duties range from helping the bride get dressed, making sure she eats something and holding her bouquet during the ceremony through to signing the marriage certificate and helping the bride to go to the toilet if her dress is too ornate to wrangle alone. She also dances with the best man during the newlyweds’ first dance, takes charge in any moments that need a soothing hand and may also make a speech or a toast.
Usually she is dressed the same as the bridesmaids, although some brides will reflect her status with a different colour, piece of jewellery or slightly different dress design. Note that if she is married, the correct term is matron of honour.
Here is a more detailed look at a Maid of Honour’s duties.
How to choose your bridesmaids
There are many factors that go into choosing bridesmaids. There’s friendship, family ties, sentimentality, returning the favour or even doing the right thing. And they’re all important to consider, in varying degrees.
But the big question you want to ask in making final selections is this: “Do I want these people to be the ones standing with me at the altar as I get married? And am I confident they will support me along the way.” If the answer is yes, you’re on a winner.
How to choose your Maid of Honour
When it comes to choosing a Maid of Honour, sisters and best friends are the obvious candidates. After all, you need somebody who knows you intimately, who you trust and who can also bring you back down to earth on the odd occasion you need it. Plus, they’re going to be a patient right-hand gal when wedding responsibilities add up or you get overwhelmed and need tissues, or even a hug.
As well as love and trust, time availability is an important factor to consider. When the groom isn’t free – or even when he is – you’re going to want the MOH to join you for activities such as cake tasting or venue hunting, on top of usual responsibilities ranging from dress shopping to planning celebrations such as the hen’s night. So if one of your besties works incredibly long hours that limit her time off, she may be better as a bridesmaid.
Something else you’ll want her input on is deciding themes, colour schemes, reception decorations and more. For this reason, someone who has an eye for style and shares your taste is also a perfect choice.
Finally, if your potential MOH has an existing relationship with the other bridesmaids, that’s wonderful too, because then she can easily direct them as needed to key dates and responsibilities such as hair and make-up trials and jewellery shopping. She’ll also ensure they’re in their best form on the big day to help make it a magical celebration which, after all, is why you have attendants in the first place.

Help with Wedding Planning

It goes without saying that brides have all kinds of personalities and management styles. Some relish the help and support of friends and family, while others are more inclined to plan their wedding solo.
As the Maid of Honor, you’re the one who knows your friendship dynamic best. Does the bride need a little nudging and motivation? Do you need to back off a little and let them do their thing? Do you both work best with calendars and brainstorm sessions, or does the planning happen organically as you spend regular time together?
If the plan of approach is unclear, don’t be afraid to reach out and set a date to talk shop. Whatever their personality or expectations, the bride will be relieved to know you want to plan, coordinate, and respond to their needs as best you can.
Other responsibilities in helping your BFF out:
Help coordinate or purchase bridesmaids’ dresses and accessories

As the Maid of Honor typically takes charge of bridesmaid duties, it’s your responsibility to coordinate their gown, accessory, and styling purchases. The bride may ask for your help choosing gorgeous bridesmaid dresses, which gives you a perfect chance to advise on budget, silhouette, and palette options! Once the bride has browsed options and made their selection, it’s your job to ensure each member of the bridal party knows where, when, and how to get their gowns in hand.
If bridesmaid gowns are being ordered through your bridal boutique, the bride will most likely be able to forward you the information given by their stylist. This may include an online link for each maid to choose their size and place an order or a way for the bridesmaid to pick up from a batch order in-store. Remind the bridal party of any alteration costs– many boutiques and specialty bridal shops also offer these services for bridesmaids’ gowns and groomsmen suits!
Whether the bride is shopping in-store or online, paying for gowns themself or allotting to bridesmaids, purchasing in one delivery package, or delegating to individuals—perhaps the most important coordination effort you can help with is to sync up purchase and delivery in a short and manageable time frame. The last thing the bride needs is a procrastinating bridesmaid or returns mishap the month before the wedding!

Keep the bridesmaids on schedule

One of the best ways you can help the bride on their wedding day is to take charge of the bridal party’s schedule! Like your getting-ready agenda above, this responsibility includes:
And of course, the pre-wedding timeline is just as important as the actual wedding-day agenda. Part of your Maid of Honor duties during the engagement window is to check in regularly with bridesmaids about their gowns, travel schedules, gift and/or registry questions, planning responsibilities, and budgeting.
Handle the bride’s bouquet, ring, and marriage license
This might seem like common knowledge, but it’s also a Maid of Honor’s job to carry the bouquet and ring during the ceremony! During the ceremony while the vows are being exchanged, the Maid of Honor is responsible for holding the bride’s bouquet and groom’s ring until it’s time to exchange them.
Pro tip: to make sure you don’t drop the ring, hold it on your thumb during the ceremony!
Lastly, the Maid of Honor and Best Man should also be witness to the signing of the marriage license!
Give a speech/toast at the reception

This may be an exciting or dread-inducing part of your Maid of Honor duties checklist: making a unique, meaningful, and effective toast at the wedding reception! Whether you’re a seasoned public speaker or reserved introvert, here are a few time-honored things to include, as well as a few things to avoid:
Wedding toasts often go one of two ways: they either become a meaningful and affirmative part of the ceremony, or they descend into an awkward free-for-all featuring a dicey microphone and drunk wedding party. As the Maid of Honor, it’s one of your responsibilities to manage this high-stakes portion of the evening—set your own fun, fabulous, and thoughtful praise to the newlyweds as a precedent!
Remember, you’ve got this. At the end of the day, the most important part of being chosen as the Maid of Honor is to be the best support to the bride you can be. You’ve already built a beautiful trust and friendship. Now, use that to help plan an unforgettable occasion for one of your favorite people!

Part I
Diana and Bruce share a moment.
Princess Diana attends an evening party in Paris. Besieged by curious onlookers, she is rescued by Bruce Wayne, who asks for a dance. Diana thanks Bruce for the rescue and as they dance, they get to know each other. When Bruce admits that he is surprised to see a woman like her at a party, she explains that she’s decided she needs to get out more and try to have some fun. She returns the question, and he says he never misses a good party, but there is also «some business» in Paris he may have to attend to. They are obviously enjoying each other’s company and continue to flirt, when terrorists drop in through the ceiling and seize the young Princess Audrey, heir to the throne of Kaznia. Bruce is about to slip away and assume his secret identity, but finds it unnecessary when Diana rescues Audrey single-handed and takes down the terrorists.
Audrey thanks Diana enthusiastically, and invites her to spend the evening with her club-hopping. Audrey explains she’s getting married soon and wants to enjoy her last night as a free woman.
Batman interrogates a burglar.
Later that night, a trio of burglars break into S.T.A.R. Labs’s Paris facility to steal a microchip, but Batman appears. He captures one, while the others escape. Batman starts to interrogate the burglar, who sneers in his native language (Kaznian) that Batman can’t understand a word he’s saying, and he won’t tell him anything anyway. Menacingly, Batman closes in, replying in fluent Kaznian that «I can, and you will. «
At her engagement party, Audrey introduces Diana to her fiancé – Vandal Savage. Diana recalls Savage’s involvement in World War II, [1] but he claims to be Vandal Savage III – the grandson of the Nazi-era Savage. He is now administering Kaznia’s substantial contribution to an International Space Station.
In space, a team of Kaznian operatives boards the space station and takes the crew hostage. In Kaznia, a maidservant poisons the King on Savage’s orders, giving the appearance of a paralytic stroke. Hearing the news, Audrey flies home immediately. When Diana hears the news, she flies to intercept their plane and warn Audrey, but is knocked out by a sonic blast from Savage’s henchman, Colonel Vox.
In Kaznia, Audrey decides that she needs to assume the throne for the good of her country, and as a sign of the Royal Family’s stability, announces that her wedding to Savage will take place immediately.
Part II
Audrey becomes Queen, making Savage de facto ruler of Kaznia. On her wedding night, Audrey wakes to find Savage missing and goes around the castle in search of him. When she finds him, he immediately announces his plan via worldwide broadcast: an orbital rail gun has been mounted on the space station, capable of firing asteroids at Earth with pinpoint accuracy – to demonstrate, he fires one at the ocean, creating a tidal wave that sinks a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier group. Savage claims dominion over all the nations of the world.
Savage proclaims himself the new world leader.
Seeing the broadcast, a Justice League team – The Flash, J’onn J’onzz, and John Stewart head for the space station in the Javelin, but are shot down by the station’s defenses.
Audrey confronts her husband, calling him a lunatic like his grandfather: Savage chuckles and admits that he’s the original Vandal Savage. Audrey says that is impossible, he’d have to be over a century old. Savage smiles and confides that, in fact, he is over 25,000 years old, and has not aged a day since a meteor fell to earth, bathing him (the only one of his prehistoric tribe brave enough to approach it) in a strange radiation that rendered him immortal, and helped him to understand his «destiny»: to become the ruler of the world. Audrey, trying hard to maintain her aristocratic poise, reminds him that she is the heir to the Kaznian throne, and Savage rejoins that he has taken advantage of that fact by marrying her, and by poisoning the king. In a rage, Audrey rakes her fingernails across his face, but is stunned to see the scratches healing almost instantaneously, confirming his tale. Savage orders her own guards to drag her away and lock her in her room.
In space, Green Lantern’s ring has kept J’onn, Flash, and himself safe from the explosion. They board the station and fight to re-take it. On Earth, Batman frees Wonder Woman, and with Audrey’s help, they fight their way into the control center, knocking out Savage and his henchman. Vox tries to incapacitate Diana again, but she resists long enough to knock him out, by using Audrey’s diamond earrings as impromptu earplugs. Batman knocks Savage out, but not before Savage initiates a meteor strike on America.
Neither he nor the team in space are able to prevent the rail gun from firing, but Batman is able to change the target to the palace. He hits a fire alarm and uses the palace address system to order an evacuation in Kaznian. While the conscious guards and servants flee, he and Diana evacuate Audrey, the unconscious guards, and the paralyzed King. The asteroid hits, with Savage still inside. In space, the rest of the League evacuates the space station, which then self-destructs.
Savage rises from the rubble.
As Diana and Audrey inspect the ruins of the palace, Savage emerges from underneath the rubble, disheveled but completely unharmed, his broken bones snapping back into place. Audrey’s guards seize him and drag him away, with Audrey promising that he will pay for his crimes. Vandal taunts her to do her worst, claiming that he can’t be killed. She smiles coldly, promising to test his claim to the fullest.
Diana teases Batman, saying they never finished their dance. Batman says he doesn’t know what she’s talking about. She smiles, «If you say so. » but insists that they still go dancing together.

Here’s How to Make the Maid of Honor’s Dress Stand Out
While your partner is the one you’ve chosen to spend the rest of your life with, your ride-or-die bestie probably played a key role in getting you to where you are today. From late-night phone calls when you first started dating to scheming with your partner about how to surprise you for a proposal, chances are you tapped a loved one you couldn’t live without to be the maid of honor at your wedding. And while you know how much they mean to you, some wedding guests in attendance might not know that, or even know who you’ve chosen for the coveted role. That’s why it’s a great idea to find out how to make your maid of honor stand out. To help you do just that, we tapped wedding expert Nayri Kalayjian of Los Angeles-based Lovella Bridal and fashion stylist Gabrielle Hurwitz to offer expert advice on everything you need to know to dress your maid of honor with distinguished style.
In this story:
Maid of Honor Attire FAQs
If you’re wondering what you can and can’t do when it comes to styling a MOH wedding outfit, keep these frequently asked questions about maid of honor attire in mind. Consider the questions and answers below your ultimate guide to acing your maid of honor’s wedding-day fashion.
How can you differentiate the maid of honor’s look?
«If you’re looking to have your MOH stand out in your wedding party, one of my favorite and most popular ways is through their attire,» says Hurwitz. «That could look like putting your MOH in a color or a print, or even a silhouette (like a jumpsuit, tuxedo, or matching set) different from the rest of the wedding party. Not only will this help them stand out, but it will also add visual interest to the overall look.» Kalayjian adds that her, «favorite ways to make a MOH stand out is a different style of dress or color of attire from the bridesmaids or both. The MOH can have a different style and color to completely make her stand out from the bridesmaids as well.»
Hurwitz goes on to encourage to-be-weds to not «be afraid to look outside the traditional ‘wedding’ brands for your MOH’s look, especially if you want them in a different outfit. Ready-to-wear fashion brands and websites can be a treasure trove for special pieces that will make your MOH stand out.»
Does the maid of honor wear a different dress?
«If you’re not interested in having your MOH stand out through their outfit, consider other options that are a little more subtle, such as jewelry and accessories,» says Hurwitz. In addition to jewelry, Kalayjian adds that another alternative is for the MOH to have «a larger bouquet from the bridesmaids—this is a lovely touch. They could also have different hair styling from the bridesmaids.»
Can you use accessories to differentiate the MOH?
Absolutely! For more subtle differentiation, consider having your MOH wear a dress that matches the other bridesmaids and use jewelry, or even a special hairstyle, to set them apart.
«I’ve had a MOH wear the same dress as the rest of the bridesmaids and we’ve added a beaded belt to the dress or beaded straps to make her stand out (or even add a slit to her dress) to give her a little extra pop of style,» says Kalayjian. «The sky is the limit—have fun with styling your bridal party and I suggest asking them what makes them feel beautiful so you can incorporate pieces of their own personality into their looks so they feel their best, confident and beautiful for your special day!»
How should the attendant of honor dress if they aren’t a woman?
In the same way that you deserve to feel comfortable in your wedding dress, ultimately, your maid of honor, and all your wedding attendants, should wear attire they feel comfortable in. Whether you have a maid of honor or a man of honor, or simply a person you consider your «primary» wedding attendant, connect with them about what they’d feel best wearing. While the day is about you, they deserve to have a say in what they’ll wear for the occasion.

Maid of Honor Duties and Responsibilities
You’ve been chosen to be the maid of honor. Congrats! Many brides ask you to be their maid of honor for a reason – either because you are their closest friend, the most organized of your friend group, or the most supportive person to help her the reach the end of the aisle. They trust you, so expect to be there for anything and everything the bride may need. There are various maid of honor duties you will have to fulfill to help the bride plan her wedding.
This is a super special time for you and the bride to bond and for you to act as the right-hand woman for everything the bride may need. Although the sheer amount of tasks you have to do may seem daunting, take a deep breath! The bride is going to have a much less stressful wedding experience with the help of her beloved maid of honor.
What is a Maid of Honor?
For those without much wedding experience, the maid of honor is essentially the bride’s number one bridesmaid. The maid of honor is the bride’s equivalent of the groom’s best man. You may see or hear many refer to the maid of honor as the “MOH” for short.
More than the other bridesmaids, the maid of honor is responsible for helping the bride make it to the big day. We’ll break down all of the maid of honor duties you should expect if you are chosen for this role below!
Maid of Honor vs. Matron of Honor
You may have heard the less common term “matron of honor” before as well. The matron of honor is the same as the maid of honor – it’s just a different name for the role. Typically, the difference between maid vs. matron comes down to marital status. If the MOH is married, she is considered a matron of honor. If she isn’t married, she is called the maid of honor.
What Does the Maid of Honor Do?
Pre-Wedding Maid of Honor Duties
Before the wedding day, there’s plenty of planning to do! Prepare for these pre-wedding maid of honor duties.
Support the Bride
First and foremost, the maid of honor is responsible for supporting the bride. Whether this means running errands, helping her decide on vendors, or just lending a shoulder to cry on and an ear to listen when the bride is stressed.
Some brides may ask a lot out of the maid of honor. This could include attending cake and menu tastings (yum), helping to make invitations, making homemade decor or wedding favors, or helping choose the color scheme. In other cases, the bride may hire a wedding planner, which would take a lot off your plate. No matter the case, be sure to help out with anything the bride may need. It’s a commitment for sure, but your help will not go unappreciated.
If you’re not sure how much help your bride will need, ask early! Make sure she knows that you want to help as much as possible, and that you are ready to make room in your schedule for whatever she needs.
If you’re worried about the time commitment required, express this to your bride early on. Being the maid of honor is a lot of work, but it’s also rewarding and a great way to give back to your friend. Try to make it work if you’ve been chosen – create shared calendars or spreadsheets to stay on track so that you can support your friend.
Attend Fittings and Shopping Trips
This may be a fun and exciting part of the job (but don’t think of this as a job). Typically, the bride wants you to accompany her for wedding dress shopping trips and also may need your opinion on bridesmaid dresses.
Make sure your schedule is open for shopping trips and dress fittings. Your bride may also want your help with non-fashion related shopping trips, like checking out venues, vendors, or buying supplies for DIY decorations.
Lead the Bridal Party
As the maid of honor, you may also be considered the leader of the bridesmaids. Prepare to answer many questions and concerns from other bridesmaids and make sure everyone is on the same page with details like planning the bachelorette party and buying/altering dresses.
If you don’t know all of the bridesmaids well, try to send out an introduction email or text early on to get all of their contact information and to get the ball rolling. You may even consider getting the group together before the nitty gritty planning begins so that you can get comfortable spending time together. If you have the time and the inclination, schedule a girls night out (or in) to get to know one another.
Leading the bridal party also means keeping the peace. Ideally, everyone will get along splendidly, but this isn’t always the case. If the bride’s high school friends are clashing with her BFF from college, try to mediate and shut down any drama before it reaches the bride. The bridesmaids should be helping the bride feel less stressed, not adding to her plate by fighting amongst one another. As maid of honor, try to shield the bride from any issues within her bridal party and encourage the girls to get along for their friend’s sake!
Plan the Bridal Shower
This is one of the most important roles of being a maid of honor. Planning the bridal shower may take a lot of your time, too, depending on if you need to choose a venue, order food, make decorations, or send out invitations. You may also need to come up with bridal shower games if you are in charge of planning.
The bride’s mother may also help plan the bridal shower – be sure to consult her, as she may want to be included in the decisions. The other bridesmaids should also assist you, but remember that you are running point. Working as a team is fine, but its’ the maid of honor’s responsibility to take the lead and make sure everything runs smoothly.
The bride herself may also want a say in her bridal shower. Ask the bride early on whether she wants to be involved with planning her bridal shower, or if she wants it to be a total surprise. This is also a good time to get her availability for other events so that you know her schedule for planning any surprises.
Plan the Bachelorette Party
The bachelorette party is also very important, and this falls on the maid of honor to plan. There will be more or less planning to do for a bachelorette party, depending on if you’re traveling far for a bachelorette weekend, or keeping it local and low-key.
Ask the bride what she wants in a bachelorette party – there are plenty of fun bachelorette party ideas to choose from, but some brides are more particular than others. Make sure that you plan a bachelorette party that appeals to the bride, not the bridesmaids. It’s her party, so you should choose activities that would be fun for her primarily.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help from other bridesmaids, because you most likely have a lot of other stuff on your shoulders. Bridesmaids are not just a part of the bridal party to look pretty, they can offer you a ton of help if needed. This is also a time for you to enjoy yourself and have fun! After all, you’re planning a party. Don’t forget to come up with a fun bachelorette hashtag for the weekend as well!
Answer Guests’ Questions
Wedding guests usually come with a ton of questions. To avoid overwhelming the bride, this may also be your job. Make sure you know all the wedding details like the back of your hand. It’s important that all guests know of all the wedding details.
Offer to act as the point-of-contact for the bride. She has enough to worry about without having to respond to texts, calls, and emails from family members and other guests.
Prepare a Toast
During the reception, you and the best man will be expected to make a wedding toast to the newlyweds. These toasts are usually filled with heartfelt memories, funny stories, and maybe some embarrassing moments you both have shared. You can also incorporate heartfelt quotes into your speech!
It’s best that you don’t prepare the toast the night before; you’ll probably be too busy anyway.
Begin planning your toast early on so that you feel prepared and confident on the big day! With extra time, you can practice giving the speech, or workshop it in front of your fellow bridesmaids to get their feedback.
Help with Wedding Planning
Finally, help the bride with any aspect of wedding planning that she may need. Planning a wedding takes a lot of work, and it’s your job as MOH to be there for her. Ask what help she needs early on in the planning process, but continue to check in to see what more you can do. She may not think she needs help at first, so be sure to keep checking in so that she doesn’t get overwhelmed.
Wedding Day Maid of Honor Duties
The big day has arrived! Show up early and ready to go so that you can keep things running and help the bride on her wedding day.
Help the Bride Get Ready
One the big day, the bridesmaids and the bride all get ready together. As the maid of honor, try to be ready extra early so that you can help the bride and the other bridesmaids get ready as well. This might include pouring champagne, running to meet vendors when the bride is indisposed, or simply kicking back with the bride for some fun before she walks down the aisle.
Make sure the bridal suite has everything you’ll need: champagne and snacks, bobby pins and makeup brushes, and anything else that comes up. Keep music playing so that everyone can have fun while they get ready, and make sure everyone is hydrating! While champagne is a fun pre-wedding tradition, you don’t want any bridesmaids stumbling down the aisle.
When the time comes for the bride to put on her beautiful wedding dress, you’ll be there to assist with zippers, dress adjustments, veils, shoes, jewelry, or anything else the bride needs assistance with.
As maid of honor, it’s important to make sure everything goes according to plan. It’s the bride’s big day; she’s probably nervous, and you don’t want anything else to stress her out. It’s your duty to make sure things go smoothly and on time. Offer to fill in wherever needed while she gets ready.
Assist the Mother of the Bride
It’s an emotional day for the mother of the bride as well. She will likely be in the bridal suite helping her daughter get ready, getting ready herself, and helping with other planning aspects. Offer your help to her however possible – whether it’s zipping up her dress, finding the in-laws, or listening while she talks about her little girl growing up.
Some brides may need a bit of space from their mother on the big day. While the mother of the bride surely means well, she may be hovering a bit, asking the bride too many questions, or stressing her out otherwise. Run interference if needed to give the bride some space without hurting her mom’s feelings. If needed, give the mother of the bride some tasks to keep her busy so that the bride can get ready stress-free.
Act as Messenger for the Bride and Groom
It’s the big day and it’s going to be hectic. If the couple sticks to the traditional rules of not seeing each other before they say their I do’s, you should help them stay separated. They planned the wedding together, however, so they may need to relay some information to one another.
Offer to play messenger of them so that they can wait to see one another but still stay in contact. Pack comfortable shoes for before the wedding, as you may find yourself running back and forth between the bridal suite and the groom’s chambers!
Keep the Bride Calm
The day of the wedding, prepare for the worst. The bride could be a nervous wreck, stressed, or even get cold feet. It’s your job as the trusted maid of honor to calm her down, assure her everything is going to be ok, and be a shoulder to lean on. Come prepared with her favorite snacks, a playlist of her favorite songs, and anything else you may need to calm her nerves.
Make Sure the Bride Eats
Both the bride and groom will be so busy getting married, they’ll forget to eat. Especially if drinks are flowing, sit the bride down with a plate of food and make sure she gets some of the expensive food she paid for. While she may not want to eat much before the ceremony, she should definitely eat at the reception to keep her energy up. Run interference with chatty wedding guests so that she can enjoy a few minutes to eat.
Sign the Marriage Certificate as a Witness
As the maid of honor, you’ll be required to be a witness for the bride and grooms wedding marriage license. That means being physically present for the signing to legally sign the marriage certificate. Don’t forget this minor, but extremely important, responsibility!
Assist with Bathroom Trips
It’s not the most glamorous job, but someone has to do it. It’s not easy to use the bathroom in a wedding gown, so the bride may need some help holding her dress off the floor and readjusting everything once she’s finished. Make yourself available for bathroom trips, and use this private time to ask if there’s anything else she needs help with at the reception!
Collect Gifts
If this is a big wedding, chances are, the newlyweds are getting a ton of cards and wedding gifts. Another job of yours is to make sure they are safe and sound. Whether that be routinely checking on them to make sure no one is stealing anything, or storing the gifts in a separate room once everyone has given their gift. You can also help load all the gifts into the appropriate car after the wedding so that nothing is left behind.
Have Fun!
Finally, don’t forget to have fun! Being the maid of honor can be a lot of work, but it’s also extremely fun to be a wedding VIP. Have fun throughout the whole process, and especially on the big day. Enjoy the food that you helped the bride pick out, tear up the dance floor with your friends and fellow bridesmaids, and enjoy mingling with other guests.
Final Thoughts
If this list has you rethinking the whole maid of honor thing, don’t’ sweat it. Your amount of work may vary depending on what the bride actually needs from you. Your responsibilities will become second nature. Thanks to you, the bride will have the wedding of her dreams!

#1 The One For When The Newlyweds Haven’t Been Dating For So Long
Many of you already know me, but for those who don’t: I’m the best friend of the bride and one of the bridesmaids.
Actually, the two of us haven’t known each other for so long, but we clicked right away from the start.
Nevertheless, sometimes I feel like I’ve known her since forever. You see, she is like that: when she walks into your life, she leaves an unerasable mark there.
The trick is that she lightens your darkness and chases all of your sadness away.
That is exactly why the groom is the happiest man alive. Many of you know that the two of them hadn’t been dating very long when he popped the question.
But hey, who could blame him? No man in his right mind could afford to lose a woman like this.
And you know what they say in When Harry Met Sally: “When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with someone, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
Well, I want you two *locks eyes with the newlyweds* to spend the rest of your lives as happy as you are today. Thank you for bringing back my faith in love.
And for the rest of you guys: thank you so much for coming. I really do hope that we all end up meeting our soulmates, as well.
#2 The One For When You’re Not The Best Speaker In The World
Even though I’m widely known as a good speaker, I have to admit that it took me two weeks to write this speech.
You see, the bride is one of the most important people in my life, so I had to make sure I would deliver it in the best way possible.
Of course, it has nothing to do with the fact that she would probably kill me if I didn’t take this maid of honor duty seriously. *laughs*
On a more serious note, William Lyon Phelps once said, “The highest happiness on Earth is the happiness of marriage.”
So, *looks at the happy couple* now that you two have achieved it, I’m here to tell the groom just one thing: keep making the bride happy.
You know what they say, “if you have a happy wife, you’ll have a happy life.” Of course, it has nothing to do with the fact that she’ll probably kill you if you don’t do it right. *laughs*
I can guarantee you one thing: this girl over here will definitely give you all the happiness in the world. Everyone who knows her is also familiar with her ability to be the silver lining to every cloud.
Well, I wish you a life filled with loads of silver linings and no clouds at all and a life with loads of laughter and no tears at all.
I wish you a lifetime of love–I think that will be enough.
And for the rest of you guys *looks at the guests*, I wish you loads of fun tonight. Enjoy the champagne!
#3 The One For When The Bride Is Like Your Sister
The bride and I are not blood-related. But you know that famous quote that says, “family is not always blood.
It’s the people in your life who want you in theirs. The ones who accept you for who you are. The ones who would do anything to see you smile and who love you, no matter what.”
Well, this quote sums up our relationship perfectly. To be honest, I’m not sure who said these wise words, but I couldn’t agree more.
Not that anyone here cares, but I am an only child. So, I spent most of my years in loneliness. That is until she came along.
Yes, that’s right *talking to the groom*. You’re not the only one around here whose life she’s changed forever.
I don’t mean to flatter the bride, but when she walked into my life, it was like I met my guardian angel. Just like that, she made everything right.
I remember that one time when I was at my lowest. Well, if it hadn’t been for her, I would have probably stayed at the bottom forever.
She is the one who picked me up and glued my pieces back together, and that is something I can never forget.
She is just like that–she fixes people. Not that the groom needed any fixing *laughs*.
No, really, this guy was perfect from the very start. In fact, I thought he was too good to be true. So, I warned the bride about him–because I simply couldn’t believe that a man like him could be real.
If it were up to me, we would have never gathered here today. Luckily, the bride’s instincts are way better than mine, so she didn’t listen to me, the same way she never listens to anyone *laughs*.
I guess she knew it right from the start. The groom was the one. And she wasn’t wrong, was she?
Let’s all give a round of applause to these two exceptional people. You are both truly wonderful. You deserve this happiness.
#4 The One For When The Bride Is Your Childhood Friend
For those who haven’t had the chance to meet me, I’ve been the best friend of the bride since childhood. It means that I’ve been there forever.
So naturally, I’m here today to tell you something more about this wonderful lady sitting over there.
Steve Marboli once said, “She lives her life like a flame; a dance of purposeful chaos… Her enchanting light can guide you and quell your fears…She’s hot; warming those who respect her and burning those who don’t… She is a flame with an unforgettable glow…A weak man will try to dim her luminance… but her soul mate will take pleasure in fanning the blaze.”
Well, honey, *locks eyes with the bride*, I couldn’t be happier today. You haven’t just found a perfect groom; you found a strong man who can follow your pace. And we all know how difficult that is. *laughs*
To the groom, thank you for never dimming the bride’s light.
Thank you for showing her that she doesn’t have to go through life alone, and thank you for being there for her, even when she doesn’t directly ask you to.
Dear guests, thank you for making this day even more remarkable. Thank you for creating memories with our lovely couple.
Let’s have some fun!
#5 The One For When You’ve Known The Bride Forever
Good evening, everyone. First of all, thank you all for coming and for making this day even more special and spectacular. My name is X, and I’m the bride’s maid or matron of honor.
But not to be modest, I’m much more than just that. I’m also her BFF and someone who knows literally everything about her.
So, I’m going to tell you a little secret. The groom is the kind of man she’s always dreamt of meeting.
Ever since she was a little girl, she dreamt about Prince Charming galloping into her life on his white horse.
And guess what? He looked exactly like the groom. I guess soulmates really do exist because I don’t have a logical explanation for it.
You don’t have to believe me, but this woman spent her whole life picturing the exact man she ended up with.
I guess their souls recognized each other when they finally met. Since I’m not such a great speaker, I’ve found a perfect quote describing their love story.
Lang Lev said the following: “When two souls fall in love, there is nothing else but the yearning to be close to the other. The presence that is felt through a handheld, a voice heard, or a smile seen.
Souls do not have calendars or clocks, nor do they understand the notion of time or distance. They only know it feels right to be with one another.
This is the reason why you miss someone so much when they are not there—even if they are only in the very next room. Your soul only feels their absence—it doesn’t realize the separation is temporary.”
Well, I wish you two just one thing: never to feel each other’s absence. I wish for you two never to miss one another and for your souls to remain connected forever. Cheers to our Prince and Princess!”
3 Funny Maid of Honor Speech Examples
Here are some of the funniest maid of honor speech ideas you’ll find. These maid of honor speech examples will make all the guests laugh, and you’ll be the star of the evening, next to the newlyweds.
Trust me. Nobody will remember the best man speech jokes after you’re done with your performance!
#1 The One For When You’re One Of The Bridesmaids
When I first found out that the bride and groom were getting married and that I was one of the bridesmaids, I didn’t think about their big day.
Instead, I began sweating about this exact moment since I knew what would be the hardest part for me.
It wasn’t throwing the bridal party or going through the wedding planning–it was writing the best MOH speech.
All of you who know me also know that I’m a terrible public speaker. My voice is shaking right now (something I’m sure you’ve noticed), and I want to puke (something you won’t see, I hope).
The truth is that I’ve tried saying “no” to this speech. Don’t get me wrong: I was more than happy when she asked me to be her maid of honor.
I was ready to fulfill all of my maid of honor duties except this one. But, has anyone ever succeeded in denying this girl over here something? *looks at the crowd* Yeah, I thought so.
Enough about me, let’s talk about our newlyweds. Should we talk about how in love they are? Or is that obvious?
I won’t be long: I’ll just wish you all the best in your new life. Some might say that this is a cliche, but it really is the truth.
I wish you the best of luck, the best love, and the best marriage ever because you two are the best. Keep on loving each other and rock married life together! *looks at the guests*
Thank you for coming, this wedding party wouldn’t be the same without each one of you. Let’s raise our glasses to the happy couple!
#2 The One For When You’ve Known The Bride Forever
Hi, everyone. I’m the bride’s best friend and one of the bridesmaids. We go back a long way, so it would be impossible to describe our friendship in just a few minutes.
However, I will tell you that the bride is so special to me because she helped me grow into the person I am today. And I hope and I did the same for her.
You see, she’s taught me a lot. For example, if it weren’t for her, I would have never known that there is a difference between the colors periwinkle and lavender or that there is a rose called Mr. Lincoln.
Well, the bridal shower and the wedding planning we went through taught me all of that.
Nevertheless, it was worth it, wasn’t it? In case some of you don’t know, those wedding napkins are not lavender–they’re periwinkle.
On a more serious note, the most important thing this girl gave me back was my faith in love. You see, I’m quite a skeptic, so I never really believed in soulmates or happily ever afters.
That is until I saw these two together. Just like that, they assured me that true love does exist, and it’s not just a Hollywood fabrication.
If you look at them closely, you’ll see exactly what I saw. And the world will start to make sense again.
Well, enough with the cheesy lines. Let’s get to that dinner and the booze. That’s all folks, enjoy the rest of the night!
#3 The One For When You Were “Commanded” Into Your Role
Truth to be told, at first, I wasn’t exactly asked into this role–I was commanded in it.
But since I’m here, let me tell you a few stories before we all get wasted, and before you all forget that I was ever standing here.
Jokes aside, I’m honored to be here tonight. It means that the bride sees me as I see her and that she loves me as much as I love her.
And you all know what a privilege it is to be loved by such a wonderful woman. So, to the groom, consider yourself the luckiest man on the planet.
But you’re not so bad either. *laughs* So I think you both won at life when you met each other. However, I’m the most fortunate because I have you two in my life.
Please, cherish each other not because you’re married now but because I don’t want to be put in the position where I have to choose sides. *laughs*
Don’t aspire for perfection and instead, be perfectly imperfect together.
What else can I wish for you two than to remain just the way you are? It would be enough to keep on loving each other the way you do today and to continue making one another happy the way you do today.
Thank you for giving me this role, and thank you all for coming.
Maid Of Honor Speech Examples For The Sister Of The Bride
If your sister is getting married, but you have no idea how to write a killer maid of honor speech, we’ve got your back.
Here are the best maid of honor speech templates and maid of honor speech examples for the sister of the bride.
#1 The One For When The Bride Is Your Younger Sister
The bride is my younger sister–I bet most of you know that. That means that she spent most of our childhood annoying me, and that practice will, I hope, finally end with this day.
But that also means that I’m super-protective about her and that I wouldn’t let anyone break her heart. So, it’s natural that I was suspicious of this young man over here.
Luckily, he cleared all of my doubts away the first time he came over to meet the family. When I saw that he didn’t run for his life after meeting all of us, I knew that he really loves my sister.
And I’ve known that until this day. You see *talks to the guests*, these two people share that once-in-a-lifetime kind of love. You know, the one you only see in movies.
This wasn’t just love at first sight–it’s love at every sight. I guarantee you that this kind of love will never stop.
So, let’s drink to that. To their eternity together!
#2 The One For When The Bride Is Your Big Sister
Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. This is the bride’s little sister talking, can I have your attention, please? For those of you who never met me in person, I’m the one she probably never stops complaining about.
Well, big sis, I want all of these people to know that you’ve always been my role model. You’re the woman I want to become when I grow up. You’re the most perfect human being I’ve ever met.
As happy as I am for you today, I must admit I’m also a bit sad. To the groom, I kind of feel like you’re stealing my big sister away from me so please, take good care of her.
Actually, take good care of each other. I once read a quote by Lao Tzu saying that being deeply loved by someone gives you strength while loving someone deeply gives you courage.
So, I wish both of you boundless courage and strength. Have an amazing life, and please, don’t lose that sparkle in your eyes.
For the rest of us, the only way we can get the same sparkle is with the help of this bubbling champagne right there. Let’s raise our glasses and drink to the happy couple.
8 Do’s and Don’ts Of A Killer Maid Of Honor Speech
Now that you’ve seen all of these amazing maid of honor speech examples, you’re ready to take one of them and modify it the way it suits you.
Or maybe you want to write your own perfect maid of honor speech?
Don’t worry, because we’ve got you covered either way. Just follow these do’s and don’ts of writing your MOH speech, and before you know it, you’ll know how to write a killer maid of honor speech.
Take this seriously
I know that you’ve spent months of your life as the bride’s physical, emotional, and maybe even financial support.
During the entire wedding planning process, you were there, and you helped her through every detail of the big day.
Most importantly: you were there during all of her nervous breakdowns.
You were not just her best friend but also her sister, assistant, shoulder to cry on, delivery girl, driver, counselor, and everything she needed.
So, it’s perfectly normal for you to be tired, as much as you love this girl.
You’re looking forward to the big day, but you can’t wait to be done with it, as well. After all, you’re also just a human being who needs some rest.
I’m trying to say that this maid of honor speech is probably the last thing on your mind. You might even fall into the trap of not taking it as seriously as you should.
Well, that’s your first mistake. Trust me–this speech is something the bride will remember forever. In fact, if you do it properly, most of the guests will keep it in their memory as well.
So, I’m begging you to put effort, time, and dedication into this speech. Please, give your best. See it as significant as it really is, and don’t take this responsibility for granted.
Come prepared
Improvising when the big moment comes is also a big no-no. You probably feel like you have it all figured out in your head and that your speech will flow naturally once you start talking.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a professional TV host or an actress who’s used to public speaking–this scenario is unlikely to occur.
It’s more likely that you’ll panic and end up making a fool out of yourself. And we don’t want that to happen, do we?
That’s why one of the most important maid of honor speech tips is to come fully prepared. Go through the maid of honor speech examples before the rehearsal dinner and choose the best one for you.
Of course, if you feel that you can add something interesting to the speech of your choice, feel free to do it.
Write down some key points and plan the basic structure of your speech. Preparing bullet points has proven to be more efficient than writing the entire speech down, word for word.
You don’t have to learn all the lines by heart but don’t read it entirely either.
Trust me: it doesn’t matter if you recite the entire speech or if you read it from a piece of paper word by word. In both cases, it won’t have a natural flow.
You’ll be concentrating too hard on remembering the exact order of sentences, or your nose will be in the piece of paper instead of making eye contact with the guests.
The best possible option is option number three: write down bullet points and rehearse the speech as many times as possible. For starters, do it in front of the mirror.
Don’t only pay attention to the words you’re saying. Remember to focus on your intonation, diction, and posture as well.
When you’re ready, ask your friends or family members to serve as an imaginary audience. Perform the speech in front of them and follow their reactions.
Be relaxed
Public speaking is a skill that can be taught. However, if you’re not so good at it, delivering speeches can be a real nightmare, especially in this setting.
Don’t worry. Every single maid of honor has been through the same things you’re going through right now.
Writing a wedding speech is not easy, so it’s perfectly reasonable for you to be nervous. The mere thought of standing in front of a crowd on the most important day in your best friend’s life can be frightening.
However, if you focus on your fears and anxieties, you’ll just make things worse. You’ll end up tongue-tied, and you won’t be able to pronounce a single word of your speech.
That is why you have to do everything in your power to stay as relaxed as possible. Do whatever calms you down, and don’t forget to breathe.
Breathing in and out for a couple of minutes before delivering an important speech has proven to be a great strategy for many professionals.
While you practice, do your best to omit the filler sounds and words, such as “uh,” “basically,” “you know,” “I mean,” and so on.
Also, pay attention to your posture. Naturally, you’ll be delivering the speech while standing up, so you’ll probably get the urge to hunch over or to take an overly firm stance.
Instead, try standing as natural as possible. Imagine that you’re not delivering a speech–you’re just talking to a bunch of friends at a casual gathering.
Don’t drink too much
When you’re advised to relax and calm your nerves, the first thing you probably think of is alcohol. After all, you’re at the wedding, and what can be better for chasing your stress away and calming your nerves?
I won’t argue with you against that–a little bit of alcohol can help you out. But the focus here is on the amount.
Trust me. The worst thing you can do is get roasted at your best friend’s wedding–especially because you’re the maid of honor. She is the central figure, but whether you like it or not, all eyes are on you also.
Not only will you embarrass yourself, but you’ll also ruin the entire wedding reception. The bride will forever hold a grudge against you if you make a fool out of yourself on her big day.
It doesn’t matter how anxious you might get–a nervous maid of honor always beats a drunk one. Besides, you need a clear mind for this big moment.
Just imagine yourself too drunk to stand on your feet, let alone to deliver a speech.
Imagine yourself smashed to the point where you start talking about the bride’s ex or mention some of her embarrassing moments she wants to forget about.
Well, that is what will happen if you exaggerate with the booze.
If you know that you’re not a savvy drinker, maybe it would be better to ditch the alcohol altogether (except the maid of honor toast, of course).
Don’t make it too long
Is there a rule on how long your speech should last? Well, nobody will measure the time you talk for, but it’s always better to keep it as short as possible.
Of course, you’re not good to go after congratulating the newlyweds and introducing yourself because this is still a SPEECH, which means that it should consist of more sentences.
However, short and sweet is the way to go.
Don’t write a lengthy introduction and cut to the chase as soon as possible. You don’t want to bore the guests, so don’t go on about things that nobody is interested in.
It would be best to time yourself while performing the speech. The ideal time is three to four minutes–anything above that would be excessive, and anything less is not acceptable either.
If your speech is longer, try shortening it without missing any key points. Just find another way to tell your main story, whittle down the introduction, cut down the conclusion, or skip the quote you’ve got prepared.
As important as it is to you, remember that your speech is just one of the main events at this wedding.
Leave time for other parts of the ceremony (the wedding vows, the best man speech, the mother of the bride speech, the groom speech, or the father of the bride speech), and most importantly, leave enough time for guests to have some fun).
Show emotions
Feelings are welcome in every maid of honor speech example, so don’t repress your emotions. This is not a business meeting, so you don’t have to have a cold face to be taken seriously.
After all, your bestie, who you love so much, is starting a new stage of her life, so it’s perfectly normal for you to get all sobby. Besides, this is not the time to hide how much this girl means to you.
But don’t cry your heart out either. Otherwise, you won’t be able to end your speech the right way.
It would be best if positive emotions could prevail. Don’t focus on sadness–focus on happiness.
Don’t talk about how your friend is leaving you and that you don’t know how you’ll go on without her being always present in your life.
Concentrate on how much you love her and how happy you are that she found the man of her dreams.
Be careful with the jokes
On the other hand, the perfect maid of honor speech is never only emotional. It should always have a bit of humor.
So, how much humor is enough? What lines shouldn’t you cross?
The maid of honor is usually the bride’s bestie, so, naturally, you two have some inside jokes. Well, forget about those.
Some “you had to be there” moments are hilarious only for the two of you–nobody else will get them, nor will the rest of the guests find them amusing.
Also, don’t dare embarrass the bride in any way. Remembering some cringe-worthy events might be cute for you, but trust me–the last thing she wants is to blush in front of her guests.
Avoid inappropriate jokes that suggest that the bride tricked the groom into marrying her or that this is her final chance to walk down the aisle. As funny as this might sound to you, it makes her look pathetic.
Most importantly, leave out any vulgar or offensive jokes. You’re not at a bachelorette party–this is the wedding day, and everyone is listening to what you’ve got to say.
Remember that the bride and the groom’s family are present, as well as little kids.
Don’t make this about you
Finally, your role is significant, but please, bear in mind that you’re not the center of attention. Don’t make the entire wedding toast about yourself.
Instead, talk about the bride, the groom, and their love story as much as you can.
How To Structure The Most Brilliant Bride Speech Ever
A great maid of honor speech has its structure. It means that you won’t say whatever comes to your mind without any order.
Instead, a perfect maid of honor speech should have an introduction, the central part, and finally, a wedding toast. All of these parts complement each other and flow naturally.
Here is an ultimate guide to writing the best maid of honor speech ever.
Introduce yourself
Guess what? No matter how close the maid of honor is with the bride, many people who attend the wedding have no clue about who she is. Well, you’re no exception.
Therefore, before you start, introduce yourself. And no, don’t list your entire resume.
It’s enough to greet the guests, tell them your name, and introduce yourself as the matron of honor.
Talk about your relationship with the bride
The next step in your perfect maid of honor speech is to mention your relationship with the bride. This is also where you’ll “declare your love” for her.
First of all, start by telling the guests something more precise about your relationship. Are you her sister? Are you two work friends? Have you been friends since childhood? How come you’re her bridesmaid?
If you want, you can tell a short story about how you two met. However, only do it if it’s an interesting anecdote–nobody wants to hear the dull, everyday tale of a mutual friend introducing you to one another.
This is the part where you should talk about the bride’s significance in your life. What makes her so special? Why is she the best friend you spent forever searching for?
I bet you consider yourself lucky for having such an amazing person in your life. Why is that so? Remember something that makes this woman so worthy.
If you plan on including a funny story regarding your friendship–now is the moment to do it. Just make sure to follow the rules regarding humor in your speech.
Include both the bride and groom in your speech
You’re the bride’s matron of honor. However, this is not just her wedding reception, and it should also be about the groom. That’s exactly why you have to include him in your speech as well.
You can share an anecdote about how the two met or tell a funny story about their relationship. Once again, omit anything that might embarrass them.
A good idea is to admit that you didn’t like the groom when you first met him. Don’t list his flaws–you can just joke about how you were jealous and afraid that he’d take your BFF away from you.
But now, you love him and consider him one of your best friends as well. You think that the bride couldn’t have made a better choice than marrying him.
Remember that mentioning the bride’s exes and comparing them to the groom won’t be comfortable to hear.
It doesn’t matter if you’re using that comparison to glorify the husband-to-be; it’s tacky and completely unnecessary.
Talk about the newlywed’s future
Enough with the past; it’s time to start looking ahead. This is the part of your speech where you’ll talk about the couple’s new life.
You can start with your vision of their future. You should be the one who knows the bride the best, so I’m sure you’re familiar with their plans and ambitions.
Be concrete. Do you see them with a bunch of kids in a white picket-fenced house in the suburbs? Or can you picture them as chief executives of a big company they started together? In fact, why not both?
The next step is talking about your wishes for the new husband and wife. What values do you want them to keep forever?
What is your advice for the new couple? Don’t worry–you don’t have to be married or even in a relationship to give them some tips.
What you should wish for them is to live happily ever after. You want them to remain in love until the end of time, overcome every obstacle on their way, and spend the rest of their lives next to each other.
Include a love quote
If you don’t know what to say, but it’s clear that your great maid of honor speech is too short, include a love quote. Don’t randomly choose any quote. Instead, find something that describes their love the best.
It can be a line from the book you know the bride and the groom like or a quote from their favorite movie.
Nevertheless, it doesn’t have to be symbolic–the only important thing here is for that line to have a deeper meaning.
Please, don’t try presenting yourself as the author of whatever sentence you choose.
At least one person at the wedding ceremony will recognize the quote, and you’ll look like a fool. That’s why you must name the author after finishing the quote.
Besides, what’s wrong with using the lines from famous people who managed to put your feelings into words?
Here are some great quotes you can use in your speech:
“The real act of marriage takes place in the heart, not in the ballroom or church or synagogue. It’s a choice you make not just on your wedding day, but over and over again, and that choice is reflected in the way you treat your husband or wife.” —Barbara De Angelis.
“A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person.” – Mignon McLaughlin.
“The secret to a happy marriage is if you can be at peace with someone within four walls, if you are content because the one you love is near to you, either upstairs or downstairs, or in the same room, and you feel that warmth that you don’t find very often, then that is what love is all about.” – Bruce Forsyth.
Thank the wedding guests for coming
Even though you’re technically not the host of this event, you’re there to represent the bride in numerous parts of the wedding ceremony.
Therefore, it’s your job to thank the wedding guests for coming and turning this special day into a beautiful experience.
Don’t make it too long. Just say something like, “Thank you for coming” or “I hope you’ll have a great time.”
End the speech with a great maid of honor toast
Your closing sentence is something that will stick in the guests’ minds. It can be a quote or a joke about the rest of the evening.
Whatever you do, don’t end your speech abruptly. Instead, try to make the ending as natural as possible.
You can use some of the usual sample toasts, such as “Here, here,” “Cheers,” or “Let’s drink to that” after raising your glass.
To Wrap Up:
These maid of honor speech examples can serve you as inspiration.
Whatever sample maid of honor speech idea you take, it’s crucial to add a personal touch to your performance. Just follow our speech tips, and you’re good to go.

Maid of Honor vs. Matron of Honor: What’s the Difference?
Ready to pick your wedding party? It’s important to know the difference between a maid of honor and a matron of honor and how you can incorporate these roles into your crew.
Before you can even start choosing your wedding party members, you’ll need to know what all the different roles mean. And one of most confusing questions is the difference between a maid of honor vs. a matron of honor. If you have lots of close friends and family members, you may want to consider incorporating both of these roles in your wedding party. But is that actually appropriate, etiquette-wise?
Here’s everything you need to know about the maid of honor vs. matron of honor roles so you can actually select your wedding party!
What’s the difference between a maid of honor vs. a matron of honor?
It’s really easy—a matron of honor is a head bridesmaid who happens to be married, while a maid of honor is unmarried. In both cases, these roles are considered leaders of the bridesmaids, meaning it’s an extra-special honor often bestowed upon the bride’s sister, other close relative, or best friend. And remember, a maid or matron of honor doesn’t have to be a woman—we’ve seen plenty of weddings with men of honor, too!
Can I have both a maid of honor and a matron of honor?
Yes, you totally can! Though it works particularly well if you’re having a larger wedding party, you can certainly have both a maid of honor and a matron of honor in your crew. In fact, if you want to have more than one maid of honor and/or matron of honor, that’s fine, too. Your wedding party should reflect your relationships with your loved ones—don’t be afraid to break with tradition and do what makes you happy!
What are their responsibilities?
A maid of honor and matron of honor have a lot of duties to handle—and there’s no difference between the jobs of a maid of honor and those of a matron of honor. Not only do they serve as leader of the bridesmaids, they also have to plan and host the bachelorette party and shower, help the bride with pre-wedding projects and tasks, give a speech during the reception, and much more!
If you have two (or more!) “head bridesmaids” you’ll need to divvy up these jobs. It all depends on the strengths and availability of your maid of honor and matron of honor. Maybe your maid of honor can plan the bachelorette party, while your matron of honor plans the shower. Or perhaps your matron of honor handles the party planning while your maid of honor can be present for dress shopping or other wedding-related projects. Talk to your maid of honor and matron of honor to determine the tasks that each feels more comfortable tackling. Your head bridesmaids will likely be thrilled that they can divide up the responsibilities—less pressure for everyone!
Do my maid of honor and matron of honor wear the same thing?
They definitely can, but some couples prefer to have their maid of honor and/or matron of honor stand out from the rest of the bridesmaids. Your maid of honor and matron of honor can wear different dresses (or dresses in different colors or patterns) than the rest of the crew, carry different bouquets, or even wear a unique accessory, like a headband or sash.
When do my maid of honor and matron of honor walk down the aisle?
Traditionally, the maid of honor or matron of honor is the last person to walk down the aisle before the bride. Sometimes she walks in a pair with the best man, or sometimes by herself. If you’re having both a maid of honor and a matron of honor, you can have them walk down the aisle together, in a trio with the best man, or separately. You’ll also need to decide who stands closest to the bride at the altar—there’s no rules about this, so base your decision on your relationships with your maid and matron of honor.

When it comes to giving a Maid of Honor speech, there are a few things that you will want to keep in mind. Even if you are using a speech example below, you will want to make sure that you add personal details. In this article, we have listed numerous Maid of Honor speech examples to help you with the writing process.
How To Write a Maid of Honor Speech
When you start your speech, make it a point to let the crowd know who you are and what your relationship to the bride is. How do you know her? Where did you meet? You can just mention these facts briefly before you begin to delve into your speech.
Another thing that you can do in your speech is tell a story about a bride. You can even tell a story about the first time that you met the groom. Most of the best Maid of Honor speeches start with the bride and end with the couple.
Some details worth including are what the bride was like before she met the groom, and what she is like now that the groom is in her life. From seeing her laugh a lot more to noticing how much more she smiles now, these are details that the guests will love to hear.
While it might be common sense for some, you will want to make sure that you know what not to say in a wedding speech. Avoid talking about ex boyfriends or embarrassing stories where the bride got too drunk.
As for preparing for the actual event, make sure that you rehearse the speech. Practice it in front of at least one person. Rehearsing a speech in a room alone is just not the same.
It is even better to practice the speech in front of one of the bridesmaids. Keep practicing the speech. You do not need to memorize the speech, but the words in it should feel like second nature.
If you are worried about your nerves during the actual wedding speech, you can try to focus your eyes on the bride. Seeing a familiar face as you speak can help to ease your nerves.
Make sure that it is clear when the speech is over. Some phrases that will indicate this include, “let us toast to the bride and groom, “congratulations to the happy couple, and so on.
These are just some tips when it comes to preparing a great speech. Read the sample speeches below for more inspiration.

Congratulations to you both and to the beautiful future that lays ahead of you.

3. When I first met [bride’s name], we were both just young girls. Even then, I knew that she was someone special. She is one of the kindest, most generous people that I know.

4. As some of you know, I am fiercely protective of [bride’s name.] I would do anything for her and she is one of the most important people in my life. Over the years, we have laughed together, cried together, and had so many amazing memories. I am truly blessed to have someone like her in my life.
Since I am so protective of her, you can imagine how skeptical of [groom’s name] I was when he first came into the picture. I wondered what his intentions were. Was he good enough for such a unique and special person?
I soon learned that [groom] is just as amazing as [bride.] He worships her and would do anything to see her smile. They complement each other in the most perfect way. They are two twin souls that were destined to find each other. And I could not be happier for the two of them.
5. Before I begin my speech, I would just like to say that [bride’s name,] you look absolutely beautiful tonight and [groom,] you don’t look so bad yourself. It has been quite a day. An unforgettable, whirlwind of a day that celebrates the fact that two people fell in love.

7. They say that a successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person. Many of us have been lucky to fall in love before. But real love is when you are able to fall in love with that same person over and over again.
8. You are able to surprise each other in ways that are always new. And it is not always just good times that make you fall in love. You can fall in love during the hard times as well, when you have to lean on each other and cry on each other’s shoulders.
9. With bride and groom, I see this kind of love. For all the time that they have spent getting to know each other, they still continue to fall in love as if they are still in the honeymoon stages. To never get tired of one’s smile, the little gestures of thoughtfulness that they show that they still care, even after all this time. That is real love.
10. I know I am not alone when I say that it is a joy to see bride and groom fall in love with each other, day after day. The beauty of such a love is something that words cannot fully describe.
So I end my speech by raising my glass to the bride and groom. Let us continue to witness and celebrate the remarkable love that this remarkable, beautiful couple shares.
11. Thank you all for coming here. Some of you have traveled far and wide to be here today. Some of you drove and some of you even flew to all be in the same room today, all so we could celebrate the love of these two people who are beautiful both inside and out.
It is amazing to see all the people who love bride and groom in the same room as they embark on this new adventure together.
12. When I first met [bride], I knew that there was something special about her. We were drawn to each other as friends and my life truly would not be the same without her. Over the years, we have shared some really great memories.
But little did I know that something in her life was still missing. I realized that when she met [groom’s name.]
After she met [groom], it was as if something clicked. We didn’t know it just then, but something was planted that would continue to flourish and grow.
Ever since these two met, something has changed. [Bride] is not exactly the same person she was before. She was strong before, but she is even stronger now. And while she was happy then, she is even happier with [groom] by her side.
With [groom], [bride] is the best version of herself. And I think [groom] is much better with [bride] in his life as well. Here’s a toast to the two of you.
13. These two newlyweds are a rare find in today’s world. Between the two of them, this couple has beauty, brains, and two hearts of gold. Here’s to the groom who has a bride so fair, and here’s to the bride with a groom who is so rare.
14. There can be so much sadness and loss in the world, but we also know that there is good in this world as well. With all of the things that happen that make us feel caught up in a storm, some of us are lucky enough to have something or someone to hold on to.
The best thing to hold onto in life is each other. When you have something to hold on to, then you have hope for the day and for many days to come
When I look at the bride and groom, I know that what they have will stand the test of time. Their love was made to weather the toughest of storms and their trials and tribulations will only further prove their love and devotion to one another. May the love that you have for each other continue to grow each and every year.
15. Growing up, [bride] was a little cynical. She did not really believe in true love or fairy-tale endings. I, on the other hand, was the more romantic one. I would tell her, much to her annoyance, that she only felt that way because she had not met the right one yet. And guess what? I was right.
When [bride] met [groom,] it was as if the universe had shifted. All the birds were singing and it was as if the sun had never shined brighter. That is how the world was through [bride’s] eyes when she finally fell in love with [groom.] As a romantic person, I have been lucky enough to watch this love story unfold.

17. Whether you are a firm believer of destiny or think that happy things can just happen by accident and mere chance, there is no denying that these two amazing people are perfect for each other. Either way, these two have happened each other. It is a once in a lifetime love, and we are all so lucky to be able to be along for the ride.
18. Hello, everyone. Thank you all for coming together to celebrate the love that [bride and groom] share. Many of you know that I am [bride’s] older sister. As most older sisters are, I have always been overprotective of her, even before she was born. When she was born, she was my baby sister.
I was determined to look after her, take care of her, and protect her, though I did push her around a little bit. But if someone else messed with her, then they had to answer to me.
As we grew older, the need to protect her didn’t go away. I wanted to always have her back at school and throughout her relationships and friendships with people. I always wanted her to know that I’d be there for her, especially when things got tough.
And then one day, [bride] met [groom.] I came to realize that this person really, truly cared her. Not only did her care about her, he loved her. From the way he looks at her to the way he always tries to make sure that she is okay, there is no mistaking his love.
And I will admit, it was hard to let go of my sister a little. We have always been inseparable. But I am so happy that she found someone who cares about her so much. I know that [groom] will keep her happy. And she will keep him happy as well.
19. Helping to plan the wedding has been an absolute whirlwind full of emotions both good and stressful. Planning a wedding takes lots of work and lots of people made this beautiful day happen. [Bride] and [groom,] thank you for taking me on this journey with you. It has been a beautiful day and we all still have plenty of dancing and celebrating to do.
Maid Of Honor Speeches For Sister
20. Hi everyone, I am [bride’s] sister. As many you all know, the two of us come from a big, happy, wacky family. Through all of the years together, my many siblings and I have loved each other with everything that we had, but we would also often fight each other with all of our strength, especially when it came to sharing, taking turns, and agreeing on who got to be in charge.
Throughout the years there have been a lot of laughs and a few fights, but my brothers, sisters, and I have always maintained our shared belief that a family is life’s greatest blessing of them all.
When [bride] finally introduced all of us to [groom], I was a little worried for him. Maybe we would be too big of a family or we would scare him away. But he was brave and he ended up fitting right in, and now I can proudly say that he is one of us. He belongs to our clan now and I certainly hope he feels that way.
Welcome to the family, [groom.] To [bride] and [groom,] may they keep our family growing one day.
21. Hello, everyone. I am [bride’s] older sister. When our parents first let me know that I was going to have a little sister, I was so excited. The day that she was born, I couldn’t believe how beautiful my baby sister was.
Growing up, she was always my playmate and best friend and I made sure that she was my sidekick. Over the years, [bride] and I had many adventures together.
Of course as we grew older, we grew apart at times and began to forge our own paths. But we always found our way back to each other. I admit that when we became older, there were times that I really missed her and how we used to be.
But seeing who [bride] has become and what she has accomplished has made me feel in awe of her. I knew that whoever could win her heart would have to be someone special. And [groom] is certainly just as special as [bride.] Together they make a formidable pair.
Congratulations to my sister and to my new brother-in-law.
22. As [bride’s] older sister, I have always felt responsible for her. I wanted to protect her from everything and growing up, I always tried to keep her safe by my side. For a while she was so much small than me, after all. But then she grew, and grew, and next thing I knew it, we weren’t little girls anymore. Sometimes I can’t believe how much she has grown, how old we’re both getting.
And when I met [groom,] I was a little skeptical. I still felt like the overprotective big sister, and sometimes I still do, but I quickly learned that [groom] was the real deal. But I am glad that she found such a wonderful person to spend the rest of her life with.
I know that these two newlyweds will be happy together. And [groom,] you take good care of my baby sister.
23. Hi, everyone. Thank you all so much for being here today. Most of you know that I am [bride’s] sister. For those of you who don’t know the pair of us too well, we were peas in a pod, two wild kids always looking for trouble.
We were always running to fast, knocking things over, and laughing a little too loud. But boy were we always happy. My sister is a free spirit with a knack for adventure and as we got older I remember thinking, “good luck to the guy that’s able to tame her.”
Well, as you know, she just tied the knot with [groom.] And I realized that she never needed anyone to tame her at all. She needed someone to love her for who she is. [Groom] is just as crazy as [bride] in the best way possible. They encourage each other to be fearless and they are always strong for each other. That is true love.
Let us all raise a glass to this beautiful cowgirl and her handsome cowboy.
24. Hello everyone, I am [bride’s] sister. I don’t think I surprise anyone when I say that I love my sister. She is worthy of all the love in the world and I am beyond thrilled that she has found that in [groom.] They are so like each other and so perfectly matched. I know that [groom] will take care of her and that [bride] will take care of him.
25. I am [bride’s] sister and maid of honor. Through the years, we have been through ups and downs. No matter where life took us, love was always there through the best and worst of times.
When one of us was crying, our love for each other comforted us and when we were celebrating, our love helped us to share that happiness with one another. In that way, love is food for the soul.
It is said that where there is great love, there are always miracles. No matter where you are, no matter what you are doing, love is the thing that can sustain you and keep you going. It can give you hope and fill you with so much optimism for the future ahead.
The love that [bride] and [groom] have for each other is something that is truly magical and miraculous and I for one am grateful to be able to witness it.
26. You all know that I am [bride’s] sister. We were brought up in a home full of love and laughter by two amazing parents who are sitting right there. If you haven’t already guessed it, we are a very closely knit family. Even as adults, we all still maintain a close relationship with our parents and with each other.
So how exactly did [groom] manage to infiltrate our family? He was a great listener, always fun to talk to, and he has a great sense of humor. He is also pretty generous and thoughtful.
But none of that would not have mattered if he did not love [bride] with all of his soul. When we all saw how much he loved her, we knew that he belonged in our family. And when we see how much she loves you, it is something that is so beautiful to witness.
So, [groom], welcome to the family. We might be wacky and even crazy at times, but you are one of us now!
27. As [bride’s] sister I am pretty used to having her all to myself. We always played together as children and sometimes we did fight. And as we grew older, we continued to hang out all the time. I got so used to having her all to myself.
When [groom] came into the picture, it took some getting used to. I never had to really share my sister before. And [groom] was someone new, I didn’t know him that well at the time.
Time passed and as I got to know [groom,] I learned that he was a pretty cool guy. I even think of him as a friend now, though now that he is married to my sister, he is my brother now too.
Over time I realized that [groom and bride] share a really special bond. I’ve seen the way they look at each other, as the rest of you have, and when I see how real their love is, it makes me hope that one day I find someone like that. I am glad that [groom] is in my life, and more importantly, I am thrilled that he and [bride] found each other.
I like to think of it this way: I have not lost a sister. Instead, I have gained a brother, and an amazing one at that. Welcome to the family, [groom.] Let us all raise a glass to the happy newlyweds.
28. As most of you know, I am [bride’s] younger sister. Growing up, I was the baby of the family. I always had a lot to learn and [bride] was my biggest example of how to be. I have to admit, being the baby sister can be really annoying. A lot of the time, you find yourself wanting to break out of your shell. At the same time, [bride] set a lot of great examples for me as an older sister.
As a sister, [bride] taught me how to share. She taught me how to be a caring sister and friend and she taught me what it means to be a good person. As much as I tried to resist it, I found myself often following in her footsteps? How could I not want to be the smart, sensitive, and successful person that she is?
Even now, [bride] has set a huge example for me by finding someone who is worthy of her love. She has found a person who is her soul mate, her better half, and her equal. I hope to one day find someone who is right for me the way that these two have found each other. I am equally lucky to have both bride and groom in my life, and I am so happy that they found each other.
29. Hi, everyone. I am [bride’s] sister. Since we are so close in age, we would play together all the time. We had our dolls to play with and we would pretend to be princesses.
She was always looking for her Prince Charming. Prince Charming was handsome, thoughtful, generous, loving, and kind. Of course we got older and we grew up. We realized that fairytales aren’t real and yet, one day, she met [groom.]
Now, many of you know [groom.] He’s a modern man and I don’t think he would exactly describe himself as a Prince Charming. But in a way, that’s what he is to [bride.] He is thoughtful, kind, generous, loving, and he isn’t ugly to look at either.
And while he doesn’t have a coat of arms or a valiant horse to ride on, he sure swept [bride] off her feet. And no one has ever been able to do that before, not even when we were playing pretend as little girls.
Sure, we’re in the 21 st century now. But what these two have is a modern fairytale, a true romance that is one for the books. Let’s raise a glass to these two storybook lovers who have finally tied the knot.
Maid Of Honor Speech For Best Friend
30. Hello, everyone. For those who do not know me, I am a good friend of [bride.] We have known each other for [number of years] years. After all this time, I feel like I know [bride] inside and out. And after knowing [groom] for [number of years] years, I am proud to say that I can call him a good friend as well.
To be a part of this close circle of friends that has gotten to know bride and groom individually, is a blessing. But to be a part of the group that has gotten to watch them grow as a couple and become man and wife is a truly wonderful experience that has given me hope and brought tears to my eyes.
I cannot think of another couple that is more perfectly matched in their own unique way and like the rest of the people in this room, I look forward to the next chapter in their lives.

Be Prepared & Take It Seriously
Speaking in front of a crowd is not easy and can be quite terrifying. However, you never know your reaction until you are there — so you should be 100% ready. Write a rough draft, read it aloud, get feedback, rewrite. Moreover, the more prepared and practiced you are, the less chance of panicking and getting tongue-tied when the time comes.
Of course, you want your maid of honor speech to be something she’ll remember forever. If you are extremely worried, it might be best to write the main points on small cards and keep them by your side at any time. Even if you won’t need a reminder, it will make you feel more relaxed about the situation.
Know The Maid Of Honor Speech DOs And DON’Ts
If you pay attention to the all the best maid of honor speeches examples, they all have organized simple points into several easy do and don’ts. Overall, it will give you some ideas on how to do your best and leave everyone swooning.
Do: Open your speech with a self-introduction and your relationship to the bride. There are guests at the wedding who might not know you very well. Let them know how much you mean to each other.
Don’t: Feel the need to be comical. A sweet, emotional story means so much more than a bunch of silly, inside jokes that everyone might not get. There will be time and place for your special BFF humor, but leave it for the afterparty.
Do: Tell everyone what an amazing person she is, how she is ALWAYS there for you, whenever, wherever! Also, it would be a nice opportunity to thank the rest of your girls for being a big part of the special day.
Don’t: Make her look bad by saying things like “We thought this day would NEVER come.” That might sound funny at the hen party, but the wedding reception is not the place.
Do: Share her love story and how she met the groom and maybe an amusing (but not humiliating) anecdote or two about their courtship. The newlyweds would love to hear such tribute to their love.
Don’t: Compare the groom to her former boyfriends. That might bring up some bad feelings and memories and it is definitely not the time.
Do: Describe what you love about the groom, his greatest attributes and how much he means to the bride. You may want to include how the bride has changed since she met the groom. Speak from your heart and mention how she became happier etc. It’s time to get emotional!
Don’t: Be trite and say things to the groom along with the lines of “Call me when you get divorced.” You don’t want people throwing objects at you or booing you.
Do: Make the toast about BOTH the bride & groom, not just amusing stories of the bride. Usually, it’s a good idea to start the speech by talking about your bride and finish the speech by talking about her and the groom as a couple.
Don’t: Get sidetracked and make the speech all about you. It’s HER day, not yours!
Do: Wish them a happy future, filled with love, a lifetime of joy, and so forth.
Don’t: End your speech with phrases like “Cheers” and “Drink up!” You want to end on a sentimental note, not a cheesy one!
Do: Wrap it up with an inspirational or sentimental quote. Let everyone know that the speech is over: give a toast to the couple or congratulate them on their wedding.
Don’t: Forget to prepare a great closing line. Do NOT end your maid of honor speech abruptly and awkwardly.

If you think you might be too nervous and need some inspiration for the speech, take a look at these maid of honor speech sister sample ideas!
As you may know, I am the bride’s younger sister. As we were growing up, I always wanted to be like my big sis. Do the things she did, have the things she had — probably I was a bit annoying little sister, I always wanted to tag along. She was an amazing example for me: she taught me how to care, how to share and how to try to reach for the stars. And as I grew up I wanted to be just as beautiful, caring, smart and successful as her.
(Bride) has always set an example for me to follow. Over the years she has shown me how to love and care. Today she shows me how to find a best friend, a partner and a true love all in one person. I hope that I am just as lucky someday. It is a great happiness to find someone who loves you as much as (Groom) loves my sister. Today I want to thank both of you for being a part of my life, and to celebrate the love they share.
As many sisters, we weren’t always best friends. I remember quarrels, screaming, door-slamming, but I couldn’t have picked a better sister and a friend.
As we grew, we were as close as two peas in a pod. We were always in trouble and I remember wondering if there will be a guy brave enough for such a wild ride as my sister is. Well, you know — my sis has just tied the knot. And I do believe that (Groom) is her perfect match. And today I realize that all she needs is a guy who will love her just the way she is, with all her craziness. Their commitment to each other inspires all of us because that’s what we call true love. So let’s raise a glass to this amazing couple!
I want you to know that it took me 3 weeks to write this speech over and over again. I couldn’t think of anything perfect enough to describe just how much I love you. I just cannot find words to define the kind of sister you are to me. This is your big day and I don’t know how to say everything I wanted to say… but I will say this.
Anna Lewis, from “To the Bride”
Love, be true to her; Life, be dear to her;
Health, stay close to her; Joy, draw near to her;
Fortune, find what you can do for her,
Search your treasure house through and through for her,
Follow her footsteps the wide world over –
And keep her husband always her lover.

***
If you haven’t had the chance to meet me yet, my name is X. (Bride) and I have been best friends for around the last 10 years. We first met at high school one day, and we just couldn’t stand each other at the very first sight. As you see, things have changed a bit eventually.
Hi, my name is X and I am a Maid of Honor today. When (Bride) first asked me to be her Maid of Honor I felt flattered. But as the big day approached, she also told me to give a speech and a toast. I am quite shy usually, so I tried to think of ways to get out of it. But have you ever tried saying no to (Bride) and succeed?
I wanted to tell you both how absolutely spectacular you look today. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a better-looking couple (except for maybe myself and my boyfriend).
I never had a sister, but (Bride) has been like a sister to me for all these years. You could say we are even closer than sisters. We have similar tastes, we like similar clothes… I knew (Bride) had found the one when (Groom) walked into her life. Well, I’m fine with that — she saw him first!
Actually, you could see that it was love at first, second and third sight. He is her Prince Charming and it seems to me he gives her all she needs — a strong arm, a sympathetic ear and his credit card.
I met (Bride) 6 years ago, as we tried to survive in the concrete jungle of NY. To thrive there, your tribe is essential. We are quite protective of each other, so I was a bit skeptical of (Groom) when he first came into the picture. But as the time goes by, I can’t imagine anyone else, but him, to be her one and only. They say that anyone can be passionate, but it takes a real pair of lovers to be silly. Well, together, (Bride) and (Groom) are two of the goofiest people I know.
Hello everyone, my name is X, and by my dress you can tell that I am a Maid of Honor today. For many years, we have been through thick and thin, and we have shared many memories. Today is another great day to add to our collection of sweet memories, so I’m really looking forward to the cake!
I know you will have challenges as all relationships do. But you know what’s great about love and relationships and marriage? it is learning to grow together.

Here’s to love, laughter
and happily ever after.
As (Groom) and (Bride) start their new life,
Let’s toast the new husband and wife!
Here’s to the husband
And here’s to the wife;
May they remain
Lovers for life.
Here’s to the bride and the groom!
May you have a happy honeymoon,
May you lead a happy life,
May you have a bunch of money soon,
And live without all strife
Let us toast the health of the bride;
Let us toast the health of the groom;
Let us toast the person that tied;
Let us toast every guest in the room
Here’s to the health of the happy pair; may good luck follow them everywhere;
And may each day of wedded bliss be always as sweet and joyous as this.
May you grow old on one pillow.
May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
The sunshine warm upon your face,
The rain fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again
May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.
May their joys be as bright as the morning, and their sorrows but shadows that fade in the sunlight of love.
Let’s drink to love, which is nothing — unless it’s divided by two.
May your joys be as sweet as spring flowers that grow.
As bright as a fire when winter winds blow,
As countless as leaves that float down in the fall,
As serene as the love that keeps watching over us all.

5 Tough Truths for Any Maid of Honor
Let us start by saying that being chosen by your bestie to be her maid of honor is just what the title implies, an honor. However, with every role we play in life there comes a number of unexpected obligations and unforeseen frustrations, this being no exception.
That’s why we here at Modern MOH feel it’s our duty to not only focus on the positive and exciting, but the difficult and demanding aspects of this unique assignment. To give you a bit of a heads up on what you can expect, and how to handle these situations best, we’ve put together a list of the five most common challenges faced by maids and matrons of honor.
1. The term “bridezilla” is very much a real thing
No matter how long or close of a relationship you have with the bride, you can never anticipate the effect that planning a wedding will have on a future Mrs. The stress leading up to the big day can turn even the most calm and collected into nervous wrecks and temper tantrum-throwing divas.
Unfortunately for you, it’s common for brides to take this stress out on the people they’re closest to, even when they’re undeserving of such treatment. Whether your bride blames you for something that you have no control over or she snaps at you for something you did or didn’t do, you should certainly be prepared for a few meltdowns along the way.
Now as you read this you may think to yourself, “no way will this happen to me” or “she would never treat me that way”, and perhaps for some of you that will prove to be true. But trust us when we say that the term bridezilla is a very accurate and real description, so it’s better to be aware and able to handle your beauty when she turns beast.
Our advice is simple- stay as calm, rational, and unaffected as you possibly can. Allow your bestie to express her feelings and exhaust her emotions without interfering or arguing. Yes, we know it’s no fun having to hold your tongue from defending yourself, but remaining neutral will guarantee the situation does not escalate into a friendship-threatening blowout (Dramatic? Yes. Totally possible? Hell yes).
Most importantly, continue to constantly remind your BFF that this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for her and that all her hard work will be worth the emotional roller coaster she’s been strapped into.
2. Being the head bridesmaid is no piece of cake
As we mentioned in our list of maid of honor roles and responsibilities, it’s your duty to be the H.B.I.C. Translation: you’re in charge of a group of girls, all with different personalities and opinions, and will be held accountable for keeping each one in check throughout the entire planning process.
While that might seem a bit exaggerated and excessive, do not underestimate the level of skill it takes to keep an entire bridal party amicable and drama-free. Let’s just say it’s damn near impossible. No matter how well you may know each of the bridesmaids, or how close their relationships are with one another, there’s bound to be a few heads butting along the way.
To keep the tension and the catfights to a minimum, it’s up to you to make it very clear who’s in charge and how important it is to the bride for her gals to be pals. Think of yourself as a mediator of sorts, always ready to settle any arguments with proper conflict resolution.
If you happen to find yourself caught up in any bridal party drama, take our earlier advice and remain neutral. Yes, we know it’s easier said than done, but for the sake of your bride, you must take the high road. Always, we mean always, remember that you are doing this for her and her special day, so any bumps along the way will be well worth it.
And if you can’t keep your big mouth shut and happen to let a few harsh words slip out? Say you’re sorry and squash it. Nothing will ruin a wedding day more than a group of bridesmaids with unresolved issues.
3. This is a full-time job from the moment you say “yes”
In theory, it sounds simple- host a boozy bridal shower, throw a ballin’ bachelorette, deliver an award-winning speech and you’ve done your job, right? We’re here to tell you just how mistaken you are. If you want to be a mediocre MOH then you’ve come to the wrong place. Our goal is to help you be the absolute best maid to your Mrs. and to do that takes lots of hard work and a ton of dedication.
No, we aren’t saying you’ll have to quit your day job. We’re just preparing you for the extra hours you’ll have to put in as your bestie’s right-hand woman. From answering countless texts about color schemes and flowers to attending bridal gown shopping and subsequent fittings, you’ll be a busy bee leading up to and during wedding day.
If you find that being a maid of honor interferes with your professional or personal life in any way, we have a few suggestions for you. One, be honest with your bride. Let her know that you feel overwhelmed with how full your plate is and that you need to take a step back.
Two, ask for help from the rest of the bridal party. Just because you’re the maid of honor does not mean you need to do everything on your own. And three, make time with your bestie outside of wedding planning. While a lot of your get-togethers may be wedding-related, make sure to slip a few wedding-free girls’ nights in there.
4. There may be times when you feel unappreciated or ignored
As we’ve mentioned time and time again, the planning process is an extremely busy time for any bride-to-be. Most of their free time leading up to wedding day will be spent meeting with vendors, deciding on decorations, and coordinating every last detail. In the midst of this controlled chaos, it’s common for brides to get caught up in their own problems, often causing the maid of honor to feel overlooked or undervalued.
Before we go any further, let us make one thing clear: By no means is your BFF intentionally out to upset you, her hectic schedule is simply an unfortunate consequence of planning such an extraordinary celebration. Nevertheless, the thought of being taken for granted can eventually lead to feelings of resentment and hurt on your end.
To keep these emotions from escalating, it is up to you as maid of honor to be honest about the feelings you are experiencing. While this conversation might prove a bit awkward or uncomfortable for you both, we guarantee your bestie will be glad that you brought it to her attention. Remember- her want for you to enjoy your time as maid of honor is just as great as your want to be the best bridesmaid you can be.
On a final note, we have one last piece of advice: Make sure you snag a moment or two alone with your bride during the reception, whether it be a bathroom break or a dance to your favorite song. Trust us when we say your bestie will be bouncing in between guests all night, she is the center of attention after all, so having a shared moment is something you will cherish forever.
5. Being a maid of honor is expensive
Sorry to burst your bubble, but we’re here to tell it to you straight. No matter how well you plan, save and attempt to cut costs, we guarantee you’ll spend more money as a maid of honor than you ever imagined.
Between buying and altering your bridesmaid dress, hosting the bridal shower, planning the bachelorette, and purchasing wedding gifts, your bank account is sure to take a hit. Not to mention the potential time off from work you may have to take to attend these pre-wedding festivities.
Before you start to panic over all of these unavoidable maid of honor expenses, let us assure you that there are always ways to save yourself some money. To help you do so, here are a few simple tips we’ve learned along the way:
If at any point you feel overwhelmed with how expensive it’s all becoming, it’s imperative that you be honest with your bride. Lastly, and most importantly, remember that every dollar you spend is paying for the experience of a lifetime and these memories you’ll make along the way are truly priceless.
Matron of Honor vs. Maid of Honor: Can I Have Both?
Jaimie Mackey was the real weddings editor at Brides from 2013 to 2015. She also worked as a luxury wedding planner and produced over 100 high-end weddings and events in Colorado
Once you’ve figured out who you’ll invite to join your wedding party, it’s time to narrow down the nominees for your maid of honor. But how is a bride to choose amongst all those close friends and family members? If you have more than one person in mind who fits all of your MOH needs, you may find yourself wondering if it’s okay to double up. The answer is: Yes!
«You do you!» says Phoebe Chen, owner and lead planner of Brooklyn-based wedding planning company B’burg Events. «If you have two people in your life that you want to be MOHs, go for it. If it’s what’s right for your wedding, it’s for you.»
Meet the Expert
Phoebe Chen is the founding owner and lead event planner of B’burg Events, a wedding planning company in Brooklyn.
In fact, one solution is to choose both a maid of honor and a matron of honor to stand by your side on the big day. But what are the key differences between a maid of honor and a matron of honor, anyway? And how can you include them in your wedding so they both stand out? Below, we have the answers.
» data-caption=»» data-expand=»300″ data-tracking-container=»true» />
Maid of Honor vs. Matron of Honor
First thing’s first: What’s the difference between a maid of honor and a matron of honor? «Traditionally, the difference between a maid of honor and matron of honor is based on relationship status,» says Chen. A maid of honor is unmarried, while a matron of honor has already had a wedding of their own. Their roles are the same; the difference is purely in semantics. Simple, right?
Can You Have Both?
While either version of a MOH is definitely, well, an honor, that doesn’t mean you have to restrict yourself to just one. Especially in a large bridal party, having two MOHs, married or not, can be incredibly useful when it comes to keeping the rest of the gang in line. And think about it: Your 18-year-old sibling will be a fabulous maid of honor (no one tells it like it is the way a sibling does), but having your already married best friend serve as matron of honor will give you access to all of the tips and tricks they picked up while they were planning their own wedding.
If your maid of honor is underage and your matron of honor is over 21, ask the younger of the two to focus on your bridal shower while the other helps with the bachelorette festivities.
Your two MOHs can either work together on all of their responsibilities, such as planning your bachelorette party or bridal shower and helping with DIY projects, or you can chat with them to divide the tasks into ones that fit each person best. A long-distance maid/matron of honor may be helpful for your bachelorette party, but won’t be able to help stuff envelopes or assemble favors—which would be a great task if one of your MOHs lives close by.
Most importantly, says Chen, «Rely on your MOHs to delegate tasks to your wedding party. Delegation when it comes to your wedding plans is crucial. Your squad is there to help, so let them!»
How To Include Both in Your Wedding
If you’ve elected two people to the role, regardless of marital status, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind. First, instead of one outfit that stands out from the crowd, you’ll need two. You could opt to have your MOHs both wear the same differentiating detail, or have them distinguished from the bridesmaids and from one another. That could mean having both MOHs wear the same bejeweled belt or carry matching, slightly different bouquets with unique pops of color. Chen also suggests incorporating a special headpiece or hair clip that gives them that extra shine.
If you’re going for something a little more eye-catching, like bridesmaids in solid colors and your MOH in a print, have both MOHs wear the same print in different silhouettes, or ask them to choose two coordinating (but not matching) prints that fit your palette.
Two MOHs also means two important walks down the aisle—well, important until you make your grand entrance, that is. Typically, the maid of honor walks down the aisle with the best man. If you have two MOHs but only one best man, you could either have him escort both MOHs down the aisle or tap another VIP (such as one of your brothers) to serve as a second escort.
Or, says Chen, «Go solo! The maid of honor, matron of honor, and best man can each walk down the aisle separately. Plus, it’s an extra nod to their special role in your wedding party.»
Whether you are having your bridesmaids and groomsmen walk separately or together, there’s no protocol as to whether the matron or maid of honor stands closer to the bride at the altar (and therefore walks last). If one is a sibling and the other is a friend, most brides will opt to have their sibling stand closest, even if they aren’t yet married. To help them stand out, Chen suggests having the MOHs stand by your side while the rest of your bride squad takes a seat by the altar.
Traditionally, the role is held by whoever holds the closest and most significant relationship to the bride, like a best friend or sister. Consider the responsibilities of the role to help narrow down candidates. The MOH should be dependable enough to complete her duties and be able to afford the financial requirements, as well.
Yes, if both are a part of your wedding party then both should be speaking (unless one personally prefers not to). They can each deliver their own individual speech or choose to combine their efforts on one grand toast.
No! The honor is not confined to any gender and we’ve seen many a man or person of honor assume the title. Some brides even opt to have both a MOH and a man or person of honor stand by their side.
A First Timer’s Guide to Being a Maid of Honor
So, you’ve been asked to be the MOH in your bestie’s wedding—exciting! This guide to being a maid of honor will help you figure out this important role.
If your bestie just popped the big question—”Will you be my maid of honor?”—and you’ve never been an MOH before, you’re probably feeling quite a diverse mix of emotions and like you need a newbie’s guide to being a maid of honor. You’re probably feeling excitement because you get to be there for your friend on her wedding day in a big way, nervousness because you want to do your best and don’t quite know what to expect, maybe even a little overwhelmed imagining the cost of the whole thing.
This first-timer’s guide to being a maid of honor will give you an idea of what’s to come, so you can spend more time on “excited” and less time freaking out.
Your ultimate job is to be the bride’s sounding board.
Whether you’ve planned a wedding of your own or not, your main mode as MOH will be hearing your bride out on her good days and her bad. She’ll be asking you your opinion, sounding off on things that are stressing her out, and basically treating you as a part-time co-planner throughout her wedding journey. We tend to think of maids of honor as the girl who holds the bride’s bouquet at the end of the aisle, but there’s a lot more in the way of emotional support that happens behind the scenes. To be a great MOH, all you have to do is listen to your friend and support her through her ups and downs. And be REALLY into her wedding, even if you’re not that into weddings. That’s it! Don’t be intimidated: She chose you because you’re so good at that already.
But you’ll also do some legwork.
Listening and giving support to your friend might be your primary job, but, depending on what your bride envisions for her pre-wedding events and her wedding weekend, you’ll definitely have some work to do, too! Typically, a maid of honor’s duties include charge of planning the engagement party (if the couple’s parents aren’t doing it), plus the bachelorette and bridal shower. Along with party planning, you’ll also likely be the one helping to corral the other bridesmaids for pre-wedding tasks like dress shopping. And if the bride needs any hands-on help with things like DIYing decor or wedding day set-up, expect to be among the first people she calls. It sounds like a lot, but your bride and her spouse will have a ton of input on all of these events, along with the rest of the wedding party and her family, so don’t feel overwhelmed. You won’t be on your own!
You’ll probably have to make a speech.
The part of this guide to being a maid of honor that usually caused the most anxiety is writing and delivering a top-notch speech during the reception. That’s a huge responsibility and since not many of us are born writers or public speakers (in fact, for most of us, this will be our first and last time ever doing anything like this in our lives!) it can totally throw you for a loop. There are tons of resources out there to help you write a great MOH speech, but the most important thing to remember is don’t overthink it. Write from the heart, tell true stories, and you’ll do just fine delivering your speech. If you’re super-nervous, ask your bride if you can partner with some of your fellow bridesmaids to give the speech to take the pressure off of you. You’ll be doing so much more for your friend as she plans her wedding, the speech should not make or break your worth as a maid of honor!
You’ll definitely spend some money.
What you’ve heard is true—being maid of honor (usually) isn’t cheap. Of course, this all depends on your bride, but the general rule of thumb is you’ll spend more than the average bridesmaid, and probably even more than you expected. You’ll be in charge of covering everything a bridesmaid is (likely your own outfit, maybe your own makeup and hair) plus some extras like bachelorette party invites, decor and bookings, engagement party necessities, and some other odds and ends throughout the bride’s wedding planning process—and that’s not to mention picking out an awesome maid of honor gift to the bride for the engagement party, shower, and wedding. You’ll likely also be in charge of collecting group funds from the rest of the bridal party, and you may have to cover other girl’s in the meantime while they get you their money. So, to be on the safe side, it wouldn’t hurt if you saved up a little bit after you accept the MOH position—you’ll be glad to have the reserves. At the same time, don’t be afraid to draw a line if the costs become too outrageous. You shouldn’t go broke being an MOH—if you have to decline certain expenses, offer to be there for your bride in ways that don’t cost anything (like helping her craft decor or source vendors).
You’re allowed to have a life.
When it comes to this guide to being a maid of honor, you should expect to be there for your friend more than you ever have before, yes. But if your job as an MOH is getting in the way of your day-to-day life, or impacting your job, or making you put your own relationships on the back burner, something isn’t right. Remember, the wedding belongs to your bride, and her future spouse—you’re not there to take the place of the partner who’s “not that into planning” and you’re certainly not a wedding planner. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your responsibilities, it’s important to be honest and reset expectations with your bride. The sooner, the better, because most Bride-MOH conflict comes from a lack of communication over duties. You can be a drama-free MOH, have a great time doing it, and not turn into a bridezilla-by-proxy in the process. It’s all about balance! It’s such a media stereotype to think of being maid of honor as if it will be a chore, but ultimately, this should primarily be a fun and bonding experience between you and your bride.
