Main content

A lot has been written and said about IELTS. As this is still one of the most popular exams to take, preparation tips and strategies are always in big demand. Being a teacher or a student, you can opt for various preparation modes. Some people prefer to get familiar with the exam format and work with tests only, expanding their vocabulary. Others like lessons based on coursebooks. Another option is to work with online resources which are widely available, especially due to the lockdown.
Whatever approach you choose, you will definitely need some trustworthy resources, either digital or paper-based. This article will provide you with some ideas.
Cambridge Official Guide to IELTS
This book is published by the Cambridge University to help IELTS students to prepare for the exam. It contains the materials for those who are aiming at band 7 – 8. The books deal with both General and Academic preparation.
You will get acquainted with the format and have a complete idea of each section of the exam. In the book there are four sections dealing with the four skills tested: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. A separate unit is dedicated to each skill, with all possible types of tasks, tips and tricks. Also, the guide includes practical exercises and 8 tests: 6 academic and 2 general ones. The answer key and the listening scripts are present too.
This one is great if:
Cambridge English Authentic Examination Papers
These are the well-known IELTS test packs. For now, there are 14 books, the next one is about to be released in summer 2020. The older test packs combine general and academic tests in each book. Starting from book 11, they come in 2 parts: Book 11 General and Book 11 Academic, for instance. Older editions do not fully correspond to the current exam tasks, so it’s better to use them for listening and speaking extra practice and vocabulary extension only.
The books can come in handy to supplement a preparation course or to have an intensive practice before an exam. I personally wouldn’t recommend to address the writing answer samples much. The examiners’ comments look too brief and the model answers given as ‘an example of a very good answer’ might lack cohesion or contain some punctuation issues.
Vocabulary and Grammar for IELTS
The vocabulary guides consist of units built around some topics: Health, Technology, Environment, Relationships etc. Each unit provides you with a number of practical tasks in the exam format and the Test Practice section where you will find a full exam task or two. The Advanced book cover says that it is for candidates aiming at Band 6,5+ and it is probably true. Weaker students might struggle with the range of vocabulary and sophisticated texts.
The grammar book works really well with students who keep making occasional grammar mistakes or struggle to get the difference between Present Perfect Simple or Present Perfect Continuous. It is also good for those coming to class with ‘I’d like to brush up my grammar!’ kind of request. Each unit is focused on a certain grammar topic: Present Tenses, Modals, Adjectives and Adverbs etc. After quite a detailed overview of the topic, supported by numerous examples, you will find practical exercises in the exam format. A unit will be followed by the Test Practice section where the tasks are selected so that students could practise target grammar structures one more time.
Mindset for IELTS
The Mindset for IELTS series is relatively new. It consists of 4 books, from Foundation to Book 3, and is supposed to cover levels from A2 to C1. Each unit of the books provides extra online practice in Speaking, Writing, Reading, Listening and Grammar and Vocabulary to work on weaker areas. The digital component includes online modules and testbank with authentic online practice tests. Topic-based units cover each of the four skills in turn. The Mindset focuses mainly on the Academic module. The Teacher’s Book seems very friendly to those who are just starting to teach for IELTS. From my personal experience, students opinions on this course are very different. Some didn’t like the combination of challenging analytical tasks and brightly coloured pictures and page design saying it was distractive. Also, there was a complaint about some lack of vocabulary.
In my opinion, this set will suit candidates who don’t have IELTS as their short-term goal. It’s good in terms of content, useful tips and up-to-date materials, but if the exam is, say, in half a year, you can’t do much with Mindset and have to develop another preparation strategy.
Websites
There are tons of websites and online resources available nowadays. My favourites are:
IELTS Liz is a gold mine for basically everyone. It’s a great starting point if you have never heard of IELTS. If you have been working with it or preparing for a while, it is still extremely useful. he website provides the information about the format, detailed analysis of various tasks, an overview of all 4 skills, practical exercises, speaking and essay questions and whatnot. The bad news is that you cannot select and copy the piece of information you’d like to save as the site is protected. But you can still download pdf versions of some exercises and materials.
IELTS Buddy is good for practising the Writing part. It will provide you with a variety of writing tasks both for general and academic modules, sometimes accompanied by question analysis. There are also sample answers and downloadable pdfs to print for the lesson.
ielts-simon might be difficult to use if you are a student as it implies that you already know something about the exam and preparation strategies. It can be useful for teachers, however, as it is run by an ex-IELTS examiner who shares some insider kind of information at times.
It is virtually impossible to list all IELTS materials in one text. However, this article marks the beginning. If you have any personal favourite IELTS resource or an anti-recommendation, please, share below.
При подготовке к IELTS вы можете столкнуться с огромным количеством различной информации — учебники, сайты, пособия, YouTuBe каналы. Я советую основной упор делать на учебники и пособия. Но как не запутаться в книжном разнообразии и выбрать книги, которые действительно помогут?
Эту статью для вас подготовила Кристина Зараковская — старший методист PROGRESS English School. В ней вы найдете подборку полезных пособий по IELTS. Они помогут вам в успешной подготовке к экзамену.
Progress English School создали 2 бесплатных площадки для изучения английского языка.

Past Papers IELTS
Изучение прошлых тестов по IELTS — это прекрасный способ подготовки к экзамену. Важно знать, что владельцами экзамена являются Cambridge Assessment, British Council и IDP Australia, именно их учебники являются официальными и точными.
Все пособия можно условно поделить на несколько видов:
Прошлые тесты Cambridge IELTS Past Papers
In the IELTS test, Grammar is awarded a separate band score in both the Speaking and Writing modules. You are assessed on your ability to use correct and appropriate grammar and on the range of sentence types that you produce. Even simple sentences need to be written accurately but in order to raise your score above Band 4, you also need to be able to show that you can use some complex sentence types and have an understanding of the relevant tenses and structures.
This section offers concise yet comprehensive coverage of the grammar necessary in order to be successful in the IELTS test. It is designed for students with a limited amount of time to prepare for the IELTS test or for students who have already completed an IELTS course and would like a last-minute guide to the test.

Are you feeling nervous and anxious about your upcoming IELTS exam? Do you think you have enough grammar skills for your IELTS test to get the band score you aim for? Please don’t be worried; this article will help you improve and enhance your grammar skills to prepare you for IELTS and ace it effortlessly.
Although there is no Grammar section in IELTS, having an excellent command of the language and enough grammar skills play a significant role in getting a high band score.
Good grammar for IELTS will help you perform well in the four sections: Speaking, Reading, Listening, and Writing. More importantly, it will improve your speaking and writing. It is in these two sections where your grammar for IELTS skills will come in handy.
10 General English Grammar rules
Most people think of grammar as simply a list of rules that you must follow when formulating sentences. However, grammar goes beyond that. Grammar is the system of language. It helps us understand more about a language and express our ideas more effectively.
Rules in grammar change over time. Hence, language can change over time too. There is more about grammar that enables us to understand each other than just being a set of rules to be followed.
Grammar makes up 25 percent of your IELTS Speaking and Writing scores. While it is not directly assessed in the Reading and Listening sections, having good grammar for IELTS knowledge and skills will also help you obtain the band score you are aiming for in these two sections.
It is recommended that you study and pay attention to every single rule. By doing so, you will have the confidence and skills you need to achieve your desired IELTS band score and make that dream of studying, working, or living abroad a reality.
Below is the list of basic grammar rules that will help you prepare before taking the IELTS exam. Note that these are universal grammar rules in the English language. Understanding and mastering these will aid you not just in your IELTS but in your entire journey of becoming proficient in English.
1. Subject-Verb Agreement
The basic rule states that a singular subject takes a singular verb and a plural subject takes a plural verb.
Examples:
2. Adjectives and Degree of Comparison Rules
Adjectives are words that describe the qualities or states of nouns.
They may be in the form of quality, number, shape, size, value, and color.
They may be in positive, comparative, and superlative forms.
The positive form of an adjective is used to describe nouns without comparing them to anything.
Examples:
The comparative form of adjectives is used to describe nouns by comparing them to other nouns.
Examples:
The superlative form of an adjective is used to describe nouns by comparing them to two or more other nouns.
Examples:
3. Nouns
Nouns represent a person, place, or thing (objects, animals, and ideas).
Nouns are categorized into two: common and proper nouns.
Common nouns are generic names for a person, place, or thing. They don’t start with a capital letter unless they are the beginning word of a sentence.
Proper nouns are specific names for a person, place, or thing. Unlike common nouns, proper nouns should start with a capital letter.
Examples:
Common Nouns
Proper Nouns
country
Canada Germany Qatar
car
Ferrari Honda Rolls Royce
smartphone
Sony Samsung Nokia
handbag
Chanel Prada Goyard
city
Tokyo Paris New York
4. Pronouns
Pronouns are words that replace a noun.
Pronouns are categorized into four: subject, object, possessive and reflexive pronouns.
Subject pronouns take the place of the noun as the subject of a sentence.
Examples:
Object pronouns take the place of the receiver of the action in a sentence.
Examples:
Possessive pronouns demonstrate ownership.
Examples:
Reflexive pronouns are used when the subject and the object of the sentence are the same.
Examples:
5. Verb Tenses
Tenses are a verb-based method used to indicate the time when an action is done.
Tenses are categorized into three: present, past, and future tenses.
The present tense expresses action in the present time, habitual actions, and general truths.
Examples:
The past tense denotes action that either began or finished in the past.
Verbs in past tense usually end with ‘-d’ or ‘-ed’ for regular verbs. However, for irregular verbs, their spelling changes completely.
Examples:
The future tense talks about something that has not happened yet or will be true in the future.
Examples:
6. Modals
Modals are auxiliary verbs that indicate likelihood, ability, permission, request, capacity, order, or suggestions.
They are also called helping verbs because of how they function.
Examples:
7. Articles
Articles are used before nouns or pronouns and are considered adjectives.
They state whether a noun or pronoun is specific or unspecific.
There are three articles in grammar: ‘a’, ‘an’ and ‘the’.
The article ‘a’ refers to nouns that start with a consonant sound and are not specific.
Examples:
The article’ an” refers to nouns that start with a vowel sound and are not specific.
Examples:
The article’‘th” however, refers to specific nouns.
Examples:
8. Prepositions
Prepositions are words or groups of words used before a noun or pronoun to indicate direction, location, place, time, and spatial relationships.
Examples:
9. Simile
A simile is a figure of speech that uses words like “a” or ”like” to compare something to another.
Examples:
10. Paraphrasing
Paraphrasing is presenting ideas and information using your own words.
It uses synonyms, collocations, and reformulation without changing the context of a sentence or a paragraph.

Does Grammar Matter in IELTS Speaking?
The purpose of the IELTS Speaking section is to put your speaking abilities to the test. In this section, your grammar will seriously be examined, and you have to prove to the interviewer that you have enough grammar for IELTS skills to ace this part. You will be evaluated on factors like confidence, fluency, and pronunciation, all of which rely heavily on grammar.
While you might be tempted to brag and use big, sophisticated, and complicated words and sentences, it is probably better that you limit yourself to primarily short but accurate sentences. Leave those longer and more complex sentences only when needed. Bear in mind that effective language is all about communicating clearly. Your goal is for the interviewer to comprehend whatever it is that you want to convey.
In this section, you will be asked questions ranging from personal to universal and are specified to get you talking about a specific issue. This is where you need to apply the grammar rules that you have learned.
Examples:
Pro Tip: Be mindful of the subject-verb agreement rule. Use pronouns to avoid repetition of words. Use the article”a/a” when referring to nouns that are not specific. Use the article ”th” when referring to specific nouns.
Pro tip: Be mindful of how to use modals correctly.Use simile and other figures of speech to make your responses sound more interesting.
Does Grammar Matter in IELTS Speaking?
There are two tasks in the IELTS Writing sectionf. In the first task, you will be presented a graph, a diagram, or a map that you need to describe, give information on and draw conclusions. In the second task, a topic will be given to you, and you need to write an essay about it. Your essay should be able to meet and exceed the standards set by the evaluators.
Grammar is undoubtedly the most significant aspect of the IELTS Writing section. Evaluators will grade your writing ability based on your understanding of grammar.
In this section, grammar is crucial. Tenses, verbs, prepositions, modals, and articles must all be carefully considered. So, no matter how advanced your vocabulary is, if your grammar is poor, you will not create meaningful and entertaining material.

Does Grammar Matter in IELTS Listening?
Grammar does not play a significant role in the Listening section. Nevertheless, you must have enough grammar skills to be able to select the correct answers. Your answer choices are heavily influenced by your grammar, which can affect your band score.
Although there are only one-word or three-word answers in the listening module, there may be instances where articles, modals, or prepositions are used; thus, you must be cautious when choosing your answers. This is where grammar plays a significant role.
Listening also necessitates concentration, memory, and a decent command of the English language. If you are well-versed and prepared in all of these areas, you can deduce half of the meaning in one sitting.
The audio does not play again in the Listening section, and there is no rewind option, so you must be alert from the start.

Pro Tip: Pay attention to the correct use of prepositions.

Grammar is not directly evaluated in IELTS, and there is no particular section for it. Nevertheless, it is essential to remember that having good grammar for IELTS skills is vital when answering questions and achieving a high band score. Grammar plays a significant role in all four sections of IELTS: Speaking, Reading, Listening, and Writing.
It is also noted that grammar is more than how well you employ tenses, sentence structures, modals, articles, and adverbs. It is also about the range of grammatical points you are supposed to use and their variety and intricacy.
Some IELTS test-takers mistake using grammar that they are unfamiliar with and do not understand how to use correctly. This will significantly affect your band score. We advise keeping it simple, clear, and concise until such a point when you are confident enough to make use of more advanced grammar.
If you wish to avoid making grammar mistakes and stick to simple structures and tenses, you might not be able to get a band score higher than 6.0 in either Speaking or Writing.
With this, we would like to give you a list of tips and tricks for improving your grammar for IELTS.
How is Grammar for IELTS Writing Marked?
Grammar makes up 25 percent of your score in IELTS Writing. The other three areas in your writing that will be marked are task achievement/response, coherence and cohesion, and lexical resource.
Hence, it is evident that you improve your IELTS grammar, as this is often the area where examinees struggle the most and where their score suffers the most. It is beneficial that you understand how grammar is graded to concentrate on improving it.
The two parts on lexis and grammar are shown in the table below. These have been derived from the public band descriptions and demonstrate what the examiner is searching for.
For the marking criteria, please see the table below for their full descriptions:

Additional FAQs on IELTS Grammar
Are There Particular Grammar Topics I Have to Concentrate on for the IELTS?
There are no particular topics in grammar that you have to concentrate more on. Every topic is just as important as the others. You will never know the grammar rules you will be applying until you take the exam itself.
However, verb tenses, modals, prepositions, articles, and sentence structures are the most common areas where most candidates commit mistakes. These are also the areas where evaluators are very keen and particular. Therefore, you are encouraged to focus and study more on these topics.
What Grammar is Needed for IELTS?
In IELTS, there are two modules: Academic and General Training.
The Speaking and Listening tests are the same in both modules. In the Speaking and Writing sections, candidates taking the IELTS Academic module should use standard English.
Standard English uses correct grammatical rules. It is considered to be formal and polite. On the other hand, those taking the General Training module may use non-standard English, which is informal and where slang is acceptable.
How Can I Learn IELTS Grammar?
There are a lot of ways on how you can learn and improve your grammar for IELTS. Choosing which one to employ depending on what you deem the most convenient will be up to you.
You can either enroll in a review center that offers training for IELTS, buy a book published explicitly for those who are taking IELTS, or visit websites that will help you improve your grammar. Just make sure to remember all the grammar rules you have learned, and you’ll be good to go.
How Can I Enrich My Vocabulary for IELTS?
Vocabulary plays a significant role in all four sections of IELTS. A quarter of your score in the Speaking and Writing sections is based on vocabulary.
Moreover, having a wide range of vocabulary will give you a better chance of understanding the texts and audio in the Reading and Listening sections. There are various ways in how you can enrich your vocabulary.
You can read books, novels, and articles. Watching videos and listening to audiobooks is also an excellent way to learn new words. Just make sure to look up the meaning of the words you don’t know and use these words whenever applicable. This way, you will have the confidence you need before you finally take IELTS.
Just make sure to choose your words accordingly. Do not use highly sophisticated words you don’t know the meaning of and aren’t familiar with, as this will significantly affect your IELTS test score.

In the future we won’t have to worry about what we eat. We’ll just take a tablet to give us all that our body needs and cooking will become a thing of the past.
In our modern world we often look for quick solutions to our problems. We expect to be able to achieve a great deal with little effort. But I don’t believe we can apply this notion to our diet and still remain healthy. Preparing a healthy meal can take a lot of time. First you need to have fresh ingredients. Pre-packaged foods can contain a lot of unhealthy additives and so they are not as good for your body as fresh food. You also need to make sure to include a lot of different foods to make sure that you receive all of the vitamins and minerals that are very, very important to a healthy diet. It is not surprising then that some people want to find a simple solution to this in the form of a pill.
Fast foods are very high in fat, sugar and salt and so we should eat them in small amounts. For some people, however, these foods have become their staple diet and as a result they are fat. If we want to stop this from becoming an even bigger problem in the future then we need to address this situation now. While vitamin tablets may be of some benefit, they are unlikely to be effective in the fight against people getting too fat.
Health authorities need to increase public awareness of these issues, but we also need to be realistic. Fast food is popular not only because it is convenient but also because it is tasty. Perhaps we should strongly advise that people who eat fast food every day should at least swap fast food with fresh food on every second day. Finally, we eat for pleasure as well as nutrition and for this reason I believe that pills will never replace well-cooked food.

Grammar for IELTS: 7 Key English Grammar Rules You Should Know
Good grammar is essential for taking the IELTS exam.
Grammar is not tested directly in this exam, so you might be surprised to hear this.
But it is true: Proper English grammar is very important for getting a high IELTS score!
Even though there is no part of the IELTS that focuses only on grammar, you will need to study grammar to get on the path to exam success.
Grammar helps you make progress in all the four skills, reading, writing, listening and speaking.
You’ll be able to feel your progress in speaking and writing mainly, because this is where you will actively use grammar structures to express your ideas. However, knowing grammar will also help you understand language, both in reading and in listening, because you’ll become more familiar with grammar structures and will understand what others want to say right away.
The best way to improve your grammar is to study each rule one by one, read some examples, make your own examples and then practice each rule by doing exercises.
We selected some important grammar rules for you to learn so that you feel more confident in the IELTS exam. Each rule is followed by examples and a short exercise. Once you’ve done the exercises, you can check with the answer key at the end of the post.

7 English Grammar Rules You Need to Get a Higher IELTS Score
Try FluentU for FREE!
1. The Simple Aspect
We use the simple aspect to talk about general, permanent or repeated actions.
Here, the present simple is used to refer to a general, habitual action:
I often readbusiness magazines online.
In the above example, it is implied that you read these magazines online all the time. This is something you do regularly.
We use the continuous aspect to focus on progressive actions that usually happen around the moment of speaking.
Here, the present continuous is used to refer to an action that is happening at the moment of speaking:
I am reading an interesting book.
The same rule applies to all the verb tenses, past, present and future. If you want to focus on the continuity of the action, use the continuous aspect. If you are more interested in the result of the action, then use the simple aspect.
Why is this useful for IELTS?
In IELTS Speaking Part 1 you have to answer questions about yourself.
You will need to make sure you use the right verb tense and the right aspect—simple or continuous—depending on what you want to say. If you want to talk about general things that you do regularly, then you need the present simple. If, however, you want to refer to actions that are temporary and happen around the moment of speaking, then you need the present continuous.
You may also need this grammar rule in Writing Part 1 when describing trends shown in graphs or charts. You are probably going to use the past simple quite a lot because in this part you report on situations that happened in the past.
Between January and March, the profit roseby 10%.
They producedtwice the amount of cars in June.
Hungary accounted for 10% of the students involved in the competition.
Let’s practice this rule by putting the verbs in the right tense and aspect:
1. I ___(exercise) every other day, but I ___(not like) going to sports competitions.
2. The graphs ___(show) how the total number of students ___(change) in the past 5 years.
3. I ___(do) an internship this spring, so I ___(not want) to take another job just yet.
4. Alan ___(watch) a movie when I ___(arrive).
2. The Simple Past and Present Perfect Verb Tenses
When using the past tense, we see these past actions as having no connection with the present. They belong to the past, so we use the past tense to express them.
I ate my breakfast with Tony and then we saw a movie.
The action above happened in the past. There is no connection with the present, so we use the simple past.
If, however, the action happened in the past but it has some kind of impact on the present, or if it continues into the present, we need to use the present perfect.
I haven’t eaten breakfast yet, I’m starving.
The above is present perfect because it is a past action but it has an obvious impact on the present, the speaker is now hungry.
I have been waitinghere since 10 a.m.
The above is present perfect because the action started in the past but is continuing into the present, when the speaker is still waiting.
Why is this useful for IELTS?
In the IELTS speaking test you may have to talk about different events from the past, either about yourself or about other matters. Decide if the actions are still relevant in the present, if they still have an impact or not.
You have more time to make this decision when you are writing than when speaking, but if you practice this rule you’ll be able to think faster.
Have a look at the following sentences and decide whether to use the past or the present perfect:
5. I ___(start) studying for the IELTS exam two months ago but I still ___(not decide) whether to move to Australia.
6. According to the bar chart, more women than men ___(take) the course last year.
7. Entertainment ___(change) a lot since people ___(start) using the Internet every day.
3. The Passive Voice
The passive voice can be used whenever you want to sound more formal and impersonal.
You form the passive voice by using the verb “to be” in the tense you want, plus the past participle (the third form of the verb; for example, for the verb “write” you would use “written”).
Almost 50% more courses were chosen in the second semester as compared to the first one. (the passive voice is used here, with the past tense of the verb “to be” and the past participle of the verb “choose”).
More research needs to be done before choosing a certain supplier. (“do” is used in the passive voice in the infinitive, with the verb “be” used in the infinitive and the past participle of the verb “do”).
Why is this useful for IELTS?
You can use the passive voice in both writing tasks in the IELTS exam, particularly in reports where a more formal tone is needed.
Now try using the verbs in parentheses in the right passive voice form. These are examples you could use in your own formal reports!
8. As can ___(see) from the figures, the number of first year students decreased dramatically in the last five years.
9. As ___(show) in the diagram, there was a marked increase in the number of students driving their own cars to school.
10. More language courses ___(choose) by students in the second semester.
4. Modal Verbs
You can use modal verbs when you want to express different nuances like degrees of certainty.
We could be late if we stop for drinks now.
I may want to spend my holiday in Europe, but everything depends on my partner.
We might want to move to a different class if the problem persists.
They could have left hours ago.
It’s almost midnight in Spain, the plane might have landed by now.
I may have mentioned your name to my colleague.
My boss can be very demanding at times.
Students can be difficult to motivate in evening classes.
My boss could be very demanding when I first got hired.
Students could be difficult to motivate when I was an inexperienced teacher.
These conclusionscan’t be right.
There must be a better explanation for why they haven’t arrived yet.
They must have changed their marketing strategy to afford such good prices.
Why is this useful for IELTS?
In the IELTS exam, you may find modal verbs in reading and in listening and if you get their meaning right you stand a better chance of getting that part of the test right.
In speaking you may want to use them in Part 3 when extending the discussion from yourself to other aspects the examiner might ask you about. Modal verbs can be used to express probability when making generalizations and talking more abstractly.
Now try practicing them by filling in the gaps with the right modal verbs studied above:
11. This ___(not be) your phone, I know you had a different ringtone.
12. It ___(be) Donna at the door, she called to say she is sick.
13. They ___(change) their plans, but they haven’t said anything to me.
5. The Definite Article
The definite article (the), as the name suggests, is used for talking about people or things that are known to the speaker, already mentioned earlier, described in some detail or unique.
Can you turn the TV on? (The speaker knows which TV they are talking about.)
We are not going by car. The car is not big enough for all of us. (The car has already been mentioned, so we know what car the speaker is referring to.)
The gift they brought was a bit inappropriate. (We know what gift the speaker is talking about.)
I can’t open the door, as I don’t have the key. (The key is unique.)
This is the best movie I’ve seen in a while. (superlative)
This is the second time I’ve met him today. (ordinal number)
The Czech Republic is one of my favorite country in Europe. (country that includes the word “republic”)
Why is this useful for IELTS?
In the IELTS Writing exam, leave a few minutes at the end to proofread for grammar mistakes. If you’re still having doubts whether you are using the correctly, try practicing in writing first and then in speaking, as you have more thinking time to decide if you should use the or not. It’s easy to erase it in case you decide that the person or thing is in fact undefined, new or not specified.
To practice making this decision, use the or nothing in the following gaps:
14. I don’t like ___ romantic comedies, I prefer ___ thrillers, but I like ___ one you suggested last week.
15. Moving to ___ United States was a big decision, but not ___ best they took.
16. ___ employees don’t like it when their bonuses are being cut.
6. Comparing Adjectives
You should use adjectives as often as you can to describe people or things because they prove you have a wide range of vocabulary in speaking and writing. You may need to compare them using comparatives or superlatives, depending on what you are trying to say. There are a few rules you need to keep in mind:
My plan is safer than yours.
This is the safest plan of them all.
This is a simpler version of what I’ve just said.
I’ve never lifted a heavier bag.
This is the narrowest path I’ve ever walked on.
His was the most complete answer I got.
I’ve never heard a more beautiful song.
This is the most interesting story I’ve ever read.
Pay special attention to irregular adjectives that don’t follow the rules above:
good ⇒ better ⇒ the best
bad ⇒ worse ⇒ the worst
far ⇒ farther ⇒ the farthest
little ⇒ less ⇒ least
In the IELTS exam you may want to use adjectives to prove your wide range of vocabulary, but pay attention to spelling while taking the writing test.
Shiny ⇒ shinier ⇒ shiniest
Icy ⇒ icier ⇒ iciest
Polite ⇒ politer ⇒ politest
Gentle ⇒ gentler ⇒ gentlest
Big ⇒ bigger ⇒ biggest
Red ⇒ redder ⇒ reddest
Sad ⇒ sadder ⇒ saddest
Have a look at the following sentences and fill in the gaps with the correct comparative or superlative form:
17. This is the ___(fast) route to our destination.
18. The salad your mom makes is ___(delicious) than this one.
19. His report is ___(comprehensive) than I expected it to be.
7. Watch Out for Frequent Spelling Mistakes
Here’s a list of frequent spelling mistakes students make. Make sure you understand the rule behind each mistake so that in the IELTS Writing exam you don’t make these mistakes!
Beautiful ⇒ beautifully
Live ⇒ living ⇒ lived
Fake ⇒ faking ⇒ faked
Plan ⇒ planning ⇒ planned
Stop ⇒ stopping ⇒ stopped
Now have a look at the following sentences and correct the spelling mistakes if you find any. Some sentences are correct.
20. I have never studyied Geography and I regret it.
21. They’ve been planing to visit, but never got the chance to do it.
22. The clock stopped working hours ago.
23. I’ve been listenning to this lecture for one hour and I still don’t get the point of it.
24. The little girl is tying her shoelaces.
25. He was fixing his bike when I got there.
These are just a few basic grammar rules you need to know to get a higher IELTS score. Remember that just doing IELTS tests is usually not enough. You need to improve your general level of English to notice progress.
The best part about learning grammar is that you feel more confident in all the four skills—reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Cambridge, Vocabulary for IELTS, With answers, Cullen P., 2008.
It aims to extend and improve the accuracy of your vocabulary and help you prepare for the IELTS test. Learning new words in context can help you to remember them and also helps you to understand their meaning. This book also gives you opportunities to practise new words so that they can become part of your active vocabulary.
Families and early learning. Study links early friendships with high-quality sibling relationships. Children who experience a rewarding friendship before the birth of a sibling are likely to have a better relationship with that brother or sister that endures throughout their childhood, said Laurie Kramer in a University of Illinois study published in Decembers Journal of Family Psychology.
‘When early friendships are successful, young children get the chance to master sophisticated social and emotional skills, even more than they do with a parent. When parents relate to a child, they do a lot of the work, figuring out what the child needs and then accommodating those needs,’ says Kramer. However, this is not usually the case when two children are interacting.
The research showed that the benefits of early friends are long-lasting. Children who had a positive relationship with a best friend before the birth of a sibling ultimately had a good relationship with their sibling that lasted throughout adolescence, Kramer said. And children who as preschoolers were able to coordinate play with a friend, manage conflicts, and keep an interaction positive in tone were most likely as teenagers to avoid the negative sibling interaction that can sometimes launch children on a path of anti-social behavior, she added. ‘From birth, parents can nurture and help develop these social competencies (or skills) by making eye contact with their babies, offering toys and playing with them,’ she said.

Cambridge Grammar for IELTS with Answers [PDF + Audio]
Cambridge Grammar for IELTS is for anyone preparing for IELTS. Although the IELTS test does not include a specific grammar module, it is important to be able to recognize and use grammar appropriately. This book covers the grammar you will need to be successful in the test. You can use it to support an IELTS coursebook, with a general English language course for extra grammar practice, or with practice tests as part of a revision program. You can use it in class or for self-study.
This book also offers concise yet comprehensive coverage of the grammar necessary in order to be successful in the IELTS test. It can be used for self-study or with a class. It will be particularly useful for a class where all the students are preparing for IELTS. It will also be useful for revision, and for candidates in classes where some students are not entered for the test, as sections A, and Band Care are designed to be useful for all students.
Cambridge Grammar for IELTS contains 25 units. Each unit is in four parts:
A: Context listening: This introduces the grammar of the unit in a context that is relevant to the IELTS test. This will help you to understand the grammar more easily when you study section B. It also gives you useful listening practice. Listen to the recording and answer the questions. Then check your answers in the Key before you read the Grammar section.
B: Grammar: Read through this section before you do the grammar exercises. For each grammar point, there are explanations with examples. You can refer back to this section when you are doing the exercises.
C: Grammar exercises: Write your answers to each exercise and then check them in the Key.
D: Test practice: Each unit has a test task. These help you practice the different parts of the test. The test task is followed by a grammar focus task, which gives you extra practice in the grammar from the unit.
The Key contains:
Recording scripts: There are recording scripts for the Context listenings in each unit and for the Test practice listening tasks. Do not look at the script until after you have answered the questions. It is a good idea to listen to the recording again while you read the script.
The Entry test: You can do this test before using the book to help you choose what to study. Answer the questions and then check your answers in the Key. The Key tells you which units are most important for you.
These pages are here to help you with yourВ IELTS grammar, mainly for writing.
However, it can obviously help with your speaking and also with your reading as it is easy to misunderstand what you have read if you are confused by different sentence structures.
All grammar for IELTS is important, but there are some specific things that are directly related to IELTS.
The explanations and exercises will highlight these so you can see how they are relevant.

Why is grammar important?
There is no actual grammar test section in the IELTS test, but you are still graded on this by the examiner in the speaking test and writing test.
These are specifically what you are graded on in each test:
Speaking:
So as you can see, grammar makes up 25% of each test.
However, it is also important for the ‘lexical resource‘ part. This is your use of such things as your vocabulary, idiomatic vocabulary, and collocations.
You will be marked down on this if you are making mistakes with such things as word forms (e.g. using a noun form instead of a verb form) so this is also grammar related.
This is not to suggest that you should focus only on grammar as the other elements such as fluency in your speaking and your ability to answer the question and organise your response in the writing are a major part of the marking.
But it is clearly important to work on improving your IELTS grammar, and this is often the part candidates have the most problems with and the thing that brings their score down.
Worried about your grammar for IELTS Writing?
This grammar eBook is packed full of grammar explanations and practice exercises.В
It focuses on advanced grammar as you need to use complex grammar to get a higher score.
How is the grammar for IELTS writing marked exactly?
In order to work on improving your IELTS grammar, it is useful to understand how it is marked.
For each of the parts of the exam highlighed above, you are given a band score (so you get four scores) and these are then averaged to get your overall score for your writing.
В В В В В Overall score = 5.5
The table below shows the two sections on lexis and grammar. These are adapted from the public band descriptors and show you what the examiner is looking for.
The column on ‘grammatical range and accuracy‘ is exactly as from the public band descriptors, but the ‘lexical resource‘ column just picks out the parts related to grammar.
Writing Band Descriptors for Grammar
Understanding the descriptors
If you study the table you will notice phrases near the top such as ‘rare‘, ‘occasional‘ and ‘few‘ in reference to word form and grammatical errors.
Near the band 6 range are phrases such as ‘some‘, and then ‘noticeable‘ and ‘causing difficulty‘ as you go down lower.
You can also see that it is important to be:

The Senate House car stunt
On 8 June 1958, Peter Davey and 11 other students at Gonville & Cauis college hoisted a derelict Austin 7 van onto the roof of the Cambridge University Senate House, in the most ingenious of student pranks.
Although the students had taken three hours under the cover of darkness to hoist the van onto the roof, it took the Civil Defence force, helped by the Police and Fire Brigade four days to remove it!
The then Dean of Gonville & Caius, the late Rev. Hugh Montefiore, having an inkling of who was responsible sent a case of champagne to “O” Staircase (the halls of residence at Gonville & Caius where Peter Davey’s room was located).

Tips for IELTS is packed with all the information you need for the IELTS exam.
Cambridge IELTS Past Papers
The Official Cambridge Guide to IELTS
Немного особняком стоит сборник The Official Cambridge Guide to IELTS. Это пособие включает в себя не только целых 8 тестов, но и советы, рекомендации и упражнения по каждой части экзамена (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking).

Учебные курсы рассчитаны на несколько месяцев и похожи на обычные учебники по английскому. То есть они включают в себя грамматику, лексику, произношение и развитие всех навыков, тестируемых в IELTS (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking).
Objective IELTS Intermediate:
Такие курсы хороши, если ваш уровень английского Pre-Intermediate или Intermediate и у вас есть время на неспешную и вдумчивую подготовку к IELTS.
Пособия по навыкам (listening, reading, writing, speaking)
Эти пособия построены вокруг навыков, тестируемых в IELTS. Здесь нет или очень мало грамматики и лексики, зато даются полезные стратегии аудирования, чтения, письма и устной речи.
Например, такие пособия по навыкам listening, reading, writing и speaking:
Для примера содержание New Insight into IELTS:
Грамматика и лексика
Grammar for IELTS представляет собой, в общем-то, типичный справочник по грамматике, но с уклоном в специфику IELTS.
То есть в Grammar for IELTS, например, рассказывается, что такое Present Perfect и как он может понадобиться в описании графиков IELTS. А упражнения имитируют экзаменационные задания. Дополнительный бонус в том, что к учебнику есть аудио.
Содержание Grammar for IELTS:
Учебник Vocabulary for IELTS разделен по темам и дает хорошие, продвинутые слова и выражения по каждой из них. Содержание:

This book, Collins grammar for IELTS, is divided into 20 units.
The Grammar for IELTS book and CD cover grammar and skills which are relevant to all four exam papers:
begins with a grammar section presenting the key grammar for the unit with example sentences and explanations.
This grammar section is followed by exercises that help you develop the grammatical knowledge and skills needed for the exam.
At the end of each unit, there is an exam practice section which is modelled on the actual IELTS exam.
Tips throughout the book highlight essential grammar-related learning strategies and exam techniques.
Grammar for IELTS will help improve your grammatical knowledge for all four papers of the IELTS exam.
As you know, grammatical accuracy and range are part of the marking criteria for the IELTS Writing and Speaking papers.
Also, grammatical accuracy is important in the IELTS Listening and Reading papers.
The book can be used for self-study or as supplementary material for IELTS preparation classes.
It is suitable for learners at level 5.0-5.5 aiming for band 6.0 or higher.
Each unit is divided into three parts.
The exercises are a combination of traditional grammar exercises and exercises based on the IELTS exam.
This section focuses on a particular exam paper and is highlighted in grey for easy reference.
A comprehensive answer key is provided for all sections of the book including model answers for more open-ended writing and speaking tasks.
There is a detailed grammar reference section at the back of the book where the forms of the grammar points presented in the units are provided for your reference.
There is a note in the unit telling you which page to refer to in the Grammar reference section.

How to use Collins Grammar For IELTS Book as a self study material?
The book is divided into 20 units.
Each unit is self-contained so that you can study the units in any order.
You can choose the unit you want to study either by selecting the grammar you want to study or selecting which exam papers you want to practise.
A sub-skill is also practised in each unit.
As a result, only the units with practice on Speaking and Listening papers contain audio.
The contents pages at the beginning of the book provide an overview of what is in each unit so you can use this to choose which units you would like to study first.
These pages also give you information on which units contain audio.
You w ill probably find it helpful to begin each unit by reading the grammar section in the first part, then working through the exercises in preparation for the exam practice exercise at the end.
Try to do the exam exercises within the time limit to give yourself realistic exam practice.
Getting well-informed feedback on your writing and speaking exam practice exercises would also be an advantage.
However, if this is not possible, it is still important to do the exercises in full.
Studying model answers can help you develop the ability to assess your own work.
If possible, record yourself when speaking and listen carefully to your performance. Avoid memorizing model answers for the Writing and Speaking papers.
Remember that in the actual exam, it is important to answer the question and not just speak or write about the topic.
As part of your final preparation before the exam, you could re-read the exam tips in the boxes.
This will remind you of the strategies for success in the exam.
