Ghost Debut New Song ‘Call Me Little Sunshine’ + Announce ‘Impera’ Album

Ghost have just announced their fifth album, Impera. The record bears 12 new songs, including the previously released single «Hunter’s Moon» and the latest offering, «Call Me Little Sunshine,» for which the ghastly group conjured up another captivating animated music video.

The announcement comes nearly two years after the band unveiled its latest frontman, Papa Emeritus IV, at a festival show in Mexico in March of 2020. It was the final concert in support of 2018’s Prequelle and firmly set in motion the next chapter of Ghost’s dark legacy, which we now know will continue through Impera.

«Call Me Little Sunshine» counters the bombast of «Hunter’s Moon» with a reliable mid-paced hook riff that opens the track and carries forward through the verse and even the chorus. If there’s one thing Ghost mastermind Tobias Forge has exhibited over the years, it’s how to maximize a simple and wickedly effective motif, and he does exactly that on this second Impera single.

In the fall of last year, Forge told KLAQ about the inspiration behind Ghost’s successor to Prequelle, and said, «The album that I have been working on, I came up with that concept years ago. We played in Seattle in 2013, 2014 — something like that — we played at Showbox At The Market. I remember that day I came up with the idea for this record, this upcoming record. Because I got a book called The Rule of Empires. So, basically, I wanted to make a record about the rise and ultimately the unescapable fails and falls of empires.»

He continued, «An idea like that can take — at least me — quite far. So once you get that idea of, like, ‘Oh, now I know what the pile is gonna look like. I know now what not to put in there.’ And it was the same thing with Prequelle; it was gonna be about the great death, a medieval, primordial threat of annihilation which was, I guess I wouldn’t say carnal but maybe a tiny tad more spiritual and philosophical death, with the ever presence of actual termination, whereas this record about the empires was gonna be a little bit more practical, I guess; a little bit more, I don’t wanna say political. So it wasn’t really hard to be inspired by the last couple of years.»

“Call Me Little Sunshine” by Ghost

On “Call Me Little Sunshine”, the singer portrays the role of Mephistopheles. Mephistopheles is generally understood as an incarnation of Satan (with the moniker “Little Sunshine” being a reference to such a being).

And more specifically based on European folklore, Mephisto is a character who sold his soul to the devil and in the process became an agent of darkness. Likewise, all things considered, it can be said the vocalist is trying to tempt the addressee to the dark side.

Well, that is at least one credible way of interpreting the first verse leading into the chorus. The vocalist also presents himself as someone who is readily available to the addressee “in the middle of the night”. And listeners who are familiar with Luciferian doctrine get a glimpse that such may actually be what he is alluding to when, despite touting himself as some sort of a savior, the narrator also lets the addressee know that the onus is on him to save himself.

Or said differently, it’s obvious that the lyrics have a spiritual quality. Yet at the same time what they are speaking to is a concept like humanism.

The Narrator is the Devil

Well regardless of how one may interpret the early goings, it doesn’t take long for the vocalist to reveal that he is in fact the devil. And whereas the second verse isn’t as generally understandable as the first, it is also apparent that his goal is to advertise his companionship as one in which, if accepted, the addressee will “never ever walk alone”.

In other words, the narrator is advertising himself as a reliable friend. Furthermore, he is advertising the idea that his friendship is filled to the brim with other benefits. One such benefit is an ‘indefinite transformation’ for those who accept it, as put forth in the second verse.

Takeaway

The simplest way of describing this piece is as an enticement, if you will, for the listener him or herself to make a contract with the devil. Or viewed more practically, Ghost is a band that believes in and practices such a philosophy. And as with adherents of any religion, so to speak, part of their responsibility is to convince others to adopt a similar belief system.

“Call Me Little Sunshine” was released via Loma Vista Records on 20 January 2022. It is the second single from “Impera”, the 2022 Ghost LP. The first single from this project is a song titled “Hunter’s Moon“.

Fat Max Gsus wrote this song alongside A Ghoul Writer. The latter is reportedly a pseudonym for Tobias Forge, the frontman of Ghoul. And the producer of the track is Klas Åhlund.

I had assumed it was just in reference to the fact that Lucifer translates to the morning star or light bringer, and from our perspective stars are just little suns.

And the Morning star is the smaller light before the Sunshine comes for real. Hence why it is called the Morning Star.

Not sure why but I get off work at midnight and everytime I start my car to go home right after I pull out of the parking lot this song plays. It never fails!

I think this is a song of support to his daughter.

This excellent song has powerful alusions to the enticement and ultimate downfalls of drug addiction. The line “light up in the middle of the day…” Is pretty direct. There are clues in the video as well. I believe that Mephisto is the dealer, with Satan representing a powerful drug like opiates. Just a thought.

Well made song, catchy hooks and simple. However, its simplicity grants the undeniable interpretation of Satan, Lucifer, liar, murderer, seducing listeners with promises similar to that of the Holy Spirit. Personally, the lyrics prevent me from enjoying the song as well as the music demands.

I think regardless of what their intent is, there’s a different perspective for everyone. They’re a great band and there’s a message in this song that most of us can take away, given the life situation ur in. This is coming from someone who believes Satan is real but does Not follow him. It’s my 10 yr old favorite song as well. Y’all gotta stop getting so damn emotional
