Я предлагала ученикам по очереди рассказывать, во что одет мишка, меняя некоторые детали одежды перед ответом каждого ученика. Ребята очень веселились, так как одежда менялась случайным образом и для каждого становилось сюрпризом, в каком наряде будет его мишка. В эту здорово играть и на онлайн-уроке.

Ученикам нужно выбрать жанр истории (сказка, фантастическая или страшная история), ее героев и ответить на несколько вопросов по сюжету. После этого они смогут прочитать и даже распечатать свою историю.

There are many games to choose from, but I have made the final selection based on utility, responsiveness, ease of use, and considering any props that you may need to prepare before the class.

1. Charades

Charades’s objective is that it is a guessing game in which players give clues with actions and gestures. It’s a great game for all level students, who are not yet confident or skilled enough to product descriptions. The focus of these games for teaching English is simply on recognition and learning vocabulary. It is an exercise you can include during the main class to impress the knowledge.

Many of us will have played Charades in many a party, but the version played in ESL class slightly simplified. Instead of acting out different syllables, students just make the action that gives a clue to the word or phrase. As such, the game can be designed to practice particular types of vocabulary, e.g., sports and hobbies, emotions and feelings, health problems, etc.

In Charades, one student stands up and acts in front of the class and enacts the word or phrase. The class is divided into two or four teams, which might be fine with students, and each team sends different representatives in each turn. There will be a time limit set for the answer. The team that guesses maximum correct in minimum team wins based on points assigned.

2. Countdown

TV game shows can be a brilliant place for ideas for Games for teaching English to adults. One of the easiest games that can be adapted is the classic British program called Countdown. The Players either play individually or can make teams, and then they take turns selecting a consonant or a vowel to select nine random letters. Then using these letters, they have to make the longest word they can. It can be an interesting challenge, so it’s best enjoyed with higher levels, but students often get into the spirit of the game, and the competition can get heated. Thus it is an ideal game for more reserved students.

This game lends itself particularly well as a starter activity for a class with maybe a few late students. Though you are not aiming to encourage this because students work on their own and there can be several short rounds people can join in as they arrive with minimum disturbance to the class. You can up the ante with stipulating the word to a specific part of speech, e.g., noun, adjective, etc.!

3. Liar, Liar

Telling tales has been part of all cultures since time immemorial. I grew up with fairy tales first from my country, then around the world, once I could read. Now, but telling tales is another matter altogether.

Who does not enjoy making up all sorts of tales? It allows students to practice their speaking, grammar, and listening skills while having a laugh riot in the class and could be one of the best games for teaching English. So here is how it goes….. this is a fast-paced game of quick wit and ideal for a smaller class size otherwise, it would take up the entire class time!

So, the students form a team in pairs and are tasked with introducing the other team member. They should present the other person with their name, try to talk about their likes and dislikes, hobbies, and family information, etc. But the catch to this is that they can make up any story about their partner. IT can be entirely made up or can have a mix-up truth and false. The other student must pay close attention to the description (mid you this is meant to be their details), then listen carefully and say, “Liar!” whenever they find a lie. That student now will correct the other person.

For example, “This is John. John is from Las Vegas.”

John (not really) then shouts, “Liar! My name is Jack, and I am from London.”

Students then switch places once the introduction is complete. This can be a lot of fun and the students get to know each other better. The game can be used as an ice breaker or for a practice session.

4. Concentration

Concentration is competitive and tests the memory of your students. It is a variation of the memory game very commonly played by children. Did you play a similar game when you were young or teenager or maybe as an adult?

There will be motivated to learn new vocabulary and a competitive spirit to use memory skills to win the game. This game can be played individually or in pairs or small teams. And you will be sneaking in a lesson on spelling and vocabulary for your students.

This game is quick to play and can be adapted to suit a small class as well as a big class. Another advantage is that you can control how long you want to play the game for a few minutes or a few rounds. It can be adapted from vocabulary to phrases, idioms, or grammar practice. This came has a wide audience from high school students to advanced learners.

Start by writing for your class a group of 15-20 words on the blackboard. And ask them to memorize the words within a set amount of time, i.e. one minute or so. Then, cover the board and now ask the students to write down as many words as they can remember. You can even offer a small prize for the winner. This will be suitable for a single or team game. Again, it is well-suited for either beginning of class or having a few minutes to spare at the end of the class.

5. Crowdsource the Monster

Let us play with the monster. I am sure everyone was fascinated with monsters at some stage while growing up. Get a student come up to the board and ready to draw. You can also make two groups, in the class, and then have two students at the board.

Now, your job will be to ask the seated learners questions about this monster. You can ask things like:

– What is the shape of its head?

– How big is the head?

– How many teeth does it have?

The seated students provide answers. The person at the board should draw as per the monster is being described to the best of their ability. This can get pretty noisy, so you may assign one person at a time to answer your questions. When all the questions are done, you will have a truly unique monster for everyone to laugh with. Maybe the monster will become the class mascot.

Another way is, get the students to draw their monsters and hang these in the classroom. This is a great filler game to spend those extra few minutes as well as practice English skills.

6. Dictogloss

This activity focuses on the listening skills of your students and challenges them at the same time. This can be used as a classroom as well as an online game. It is better suited for advanced learners.

The idea is to test their listening and writing skills. So, you must choose a passage or a paragraph. Then, read it aloud at a slightly quicker pace than your class is used to. They all have to take notes while you are reading about what they hear. Read it twice, and then ask the students to recreate what they have been hearing.

The person who has provides the closest answer is the winner. This game also tests the concentration, paraphrasing skills, writing, and grammar skills of the student. Hence, a comprehensive exercise.

7. ESL Role Plays

Some students decide to study English for a specific purpose such as settlement abroad, career abroad even marriage in a new country. Role-plays are a good idea to look at typical circumstances and use related vocabulary while enhancing speaking skills.

You divide the class into two or three teams. Each team picks on a real-life situation i.e. doctor, shopping at the upper market, immigration officer, etc. You become the customer for each group in turn. Ix things up and provide different responses and problems for your student to answer.

The other teams can observe and take notes. The goal here is to help the students to gain confidence in real-life situations. And then, you can discuss feedback at the end of the session.

8. Call My Bluff / Two Truths And a Lie

Let your students get to know you or each other better. Call My Bluff is an enjoyable game to teach English. It will be perfect to start that first session and getting the students involved. IT is a brilliant ice breaker and can be played with all ages. But this is best played with a small class size. The Call my Bluff is one of the games for teaching English that is excellent for practicing speaking skills,

You must allow time to comment on any mistakes made, usually after the end of the game. Especially with older groups, you will be able to have some real fun and may even be surprised by what you will learn about some of your students when.

First, Write three statements about yourself on the board, two of which should be bluffs and only one should be true. Ask your students to enquire about each statement from you. And they should figure out which statement is correct and the other ones which are lies. You should practice your poker face first, though! They win if the guesses are correct.

You can extend the game by dividing the class into pairs or fours and trying out this activity with each other. Give students time to write their own two truths and one lie. Later bring the class together and discover new facts that the students have learned about each other.

9. Hangman

This is a classic game and was a childhood favorite. Did you play it as well? But it can get boring quickly enough, so use this to finish or start your lesson. The ideal duration should be five minutes or so. It works flawlessly, no matter the number of students.

First, think of a phrase or letter and write it on the board marking dashes for the consonants. Fill in the vowels. Ask students to choose a letter. If it appears in the word, fill it in one/more of the correct spaces. If it does not appear in the word, write it off to a side on the board (students will remember not to repeat it) and begin drawing the image of a hanging man. You will continue the process till the students guess the word correctly, so they win Hangman alternatively is complete and you are the winner.

10. Board Race

Board Race is a fun game to teach English. That is a good way to revise the on-going vocabulary practice that is an essential part of ESL. It will keep the brains and students active, so they participate in the lesson. This game for teaching English is also a lovely way to test the students’ knowledge about the subject you want to introduce…

The minimum number should be six students or more. The first step is to split the class into two groups and give each of them a coloured marker. If your class is large, then divide the students into teams of 3 or 4. Draw a line dividing the board and write a topic on top.

The students have to think and write as many words as they can think about the topic. You can extend it to sentences instead of words. Each team wins points for correct words, and the team with maximum points wins.

11. Taboo Words

One of the few games to teach English which can help in practicing synonyms and descriptions. Taboo Words is a fantastic game for teaching English, especially for advanced or adult learners. Use it as part of the lesson, or at the beginning or end of class, the charm persists.

So, let us divide the class into two halves and send them to the opposite end of the room but facing each other. Nominate one person to sit in front of their team, and you stand behind the students to hold out a piece of paper with a word written on it.

The timer then gives those three minutes to get their teammate sitting in front to say the word on paper. The others can not directly say the word but use synonyms and descriptions. So be ready for some fun with this!

12. Categories

Another game to either warm up the class in the morning or fill the last few minutes of the class. This will be useful for learners at all levels and all ages. So, let’s see how we go about it.

The students should take a sheet of paper and draw six columns (can be less) on it. You can choose six (less if you so wish) categories based on the topic of learning in the class, e.g. names, cities or countries, furniture, verbs, adjectives, clothing, etc.

Then, give your class a random letter and write it on the board. Ask them to write down a word for each of the categories that begin with that letter. Again, a way of practicing vocabulary, meanings, and spellings.

13. Chain Spelling

Let your pupils have some fun. Playing Chain Spelling as one of the games for teaching English is a good way to teach vocabulary, spelling, and pronunciation. You give the word to a student and ask them to spell it. Once the student completes this step correctly, then a second student will say a word beginning with the last letter and spell it.

The game continues in this fashion till someone makes a mistake, i.e., pronouncing the word incorrectly or misspelling it or says a word that has already been said, then that person is out of the game. The last one remaining in the game is the winner. You can further increase the difficulty level by introducing categories e.g. adjectives, nouns, adverbs, food, travel, etc. the winner may even be given a token prize for the achievement!

14. Sentence Race

A good game to teach English and revise or introduce vocabulary and sentence structure. This game for teaching English is suitable for all levels of pupils. Do you remember making sentences with new words learned in class? I do, and this gave is based upon that exercise.

Look and prepare a list of vocabulary words that you want to review. Then write each word on two small pieces of paper and fold them, creating two sets of each word. Make sure to keep the identical bundles separate, though!

When in class, divide your pupils into two groups and distribute the folded papers to each team. Ensure that both the teams have a set of identical words. Each student in each team should have at least one paper. Then, get two students with the same words to come to the board and write a sentence with the word. The race is to finish the sentence correctly first. So, of course, the winner will be the one with a correct and written sentence. For your adult and advanced learners, use tougher words.

15. What’s the Meaning?

Did you use a dictionary? Those thick tomes that I am sure all students dread to find the meanings of words. Now there are digital versions available, much quicker and easier to play one of these games for teaching English.

You can either use the old fashioned dictionary if there is no internet in class or refer to the online versions depending on circumstances. This is one of the games to teach English that introduces new words and pronunciations for your students.

Find a word that may be long, difficult, and unknown and maybe even confusing to the students. Now, without using a dictionary, instruct the students to write the definition as they see fit. (There can be teams if your class size is large). Give them a few minutes to complete. Collect their word and read each definition out to the class.

Get all the students to select which one seems the closest match to the meaning (it may even be incorrect). IF any of the groups guessed correctly, then they win, alternatively use the dictionary to read the correct definition. The game aims to develop an understanding of language and practice writing skills.

A list of English games for kids which are perfect for children who are beginner English speakers and still learning the basics of the language. Find 10 ESL games below:

1: Warm up games with Total Physical Response (get up and move)

The best way to start your ESL class is with a warm up game. Warm up games in can come in all shapes and sizes. A lot of these games should include total physical response, that way children are interacting and using language with physical movement. This is a great way to have all the children involved with learning while warming up their brains for the upcoming lesson.

Warm up games can be tailored to whatever lesson you are teaching your class at that time and can expand depending on learning level.

How to play

Playing warm up games using total physical response can be played in many ways but the main game I like to play is get up and move. All the students will stand in front of their desks or form a circle. The teacher will call out a vocabulary word and the students will have to act it out. You can also play the reverse side of this the teacher can act out a vocabulary word and the students have to say what the teacher is acting out.

Examples:

Using basic knowledge in language:
The teacher will call out words such as:
Stand up
Sit down
Open your book
Close your book
Pencil
Crayon
Rubber

The students will act out actions to these words or will hold up their objects of what vocabulary word the teacher is using.

Using routine in language:
The teacher will call out words such as:
Good morning
Good night
Yawn
Shower
Brush your teeth
Brush your hair
Wash your hands

The students will act out actions to these words or say the words to the vocabulary card the teacher is using.

How this ESL classroom game teaches English

Get up and move is a great way to teach English because it is using total physical response and getting the students not only moving but thinking. Students are using both the left and right side of their brains and the more fun they are having the easier it is to remember vocabulary words.

2. Musical Chairs

Musical Chairs is one of my favourite ESL classroom games that can be tailored to whatever topic or lesson is being taught.

How to play

The teacher will make a circle of chairs in the middle of the room, I often like to use 5-7 chairs at a time. Stick vocabulary cards on the back of each chair. This can be words or pictures. Play music, when the music stops all the children have to find a chair, the last student to sit has to say what is on the back of their char.

Pick an English song your class has been practicing and use that to stop and play the music, this is reinforcement of what you have already been learning in the classroom. You can also find a list of recommended nursery rhymes and songs for beginners here.

If you have a large English class, have the students alternate by changing kids when the last one to sit in their chair has answered their question.

Example

Use the alphabet or numbers and have the students say what is on the back of their chair. Those who are advanced learners or if you want to make the game more challenging, you can have the students tell you what letter or number comes before and after.

Use animals or colors and have the students say what is on the back of their chair. Those who are advanced learners or if you want to make the game more challenging you can have the students make animal noises, act out the animal and find the color that’s on the back of their chair in the room.

Musical chairs is a great way to reinforce vocabulary words the classroom is working on. It also makes English more fun and is used as a memory game for students. The background music is an excellent way to use classroom language in a subconscious way for the student as well.

3. Passing the ball

How to play

The teacher will put the students in a circle or place them all around the room. The teacher will start by throwing the ball to a student and asking them a question or showing them a picture of a word that the classroom is learning. Then the students have to throw the ball to each other and ask questions, repeat words, show flashcards or act out actions for the next student to answer.

Examples

Asking questions:
Using basic questions such as:
How old are you?
How are you?
What is your name?
What letter is this?
What number is this?

The students will go around answering and asking each other questions.

Using Categories:
The teacher will pick a topic (clothes) the students will throw the ball and say an item of clothing, that student that caught the ball has to find, point and say the item of clothing that the other student said.

Passing the ball teaches students to pronounce and use language they have been practicing in class. Learning how to ask and answer questions as well as being able find objects or items in the classroom and repeat them. It helps students interact with each other instead of only focusing on the teacher. Every student wants to throw or catch the ball, so it is also keeping them awake and ready for the next throw.

4. Bingo

Bingo can be tailored to whatever topic or lesson is being taught.

How to play
To play bingo, you will need bingo boards with at least 16 squares. The object of the game is to have a student shout out bingo once they have gotten the correct number of squares in a row. If you are using a board of 16 then students need 4 squares in a row, if you are using a board with 25 squares, then the students will need 5 squares in a row.

You can give the students little piece of paper, beads, candy or anything exciting to cover their bingo boards with. The teacher will call out topic words and the students have to find the word or picture on their board and cover it. The first student to have the correct number in a row wins and will then have to repeat all the words or pictures back to you for a prize.

Making bingo boards can be challenging and time consuming. Using My Free Bingo Cards is a great resource to make your bingo boards. You can pick the number of squares, write out the words, or copy the pictures to the design and the website will generate a number of bingo boards for you in all different orders.

Example
For beginners using the alphabet and numbers is perfect. With the alphabet, since there are 26 letters and only 25 squares it is a fun way to have the students find which letter their bingo board is missing. Have the students read back each letter or number that is covered up once they have called out bingo.

How this ESL classroom game teaches English
Bingo helps students with memory because they are constantly looking for the vocabulary word or picture the teacher is saying. When it is in front of them and they have to look for it, their brain is picking up on the words quicker. Having to repeat the words will also help with repetition and memory.

5. Flash Card Memory

Flash card memory can be tailored to whatever topic or lesson is being taught.

How to play
The teacher puts up flashcards on the board for the topic that week. The students study it for 1 minute. The students then have to “go to sleep” and turn away from the board. The teacher takes away a card and yells “wake up”! Then the students have to find and say which card is missing.

Examples
I use this game for almost every topic for my beginner classes because they love it so much. You can use it for animals, clothing, basic language, colors, letters, numbers and so much more.

To make the game more fun you can have one of the students play the role of the teacher and they are the one that says, “go to sleep”, pulls the card away and then says, “wake up”.

How this ESL classroom game teaches English
Flash card memory helps students learn English by using repetition in memory through finding words or pictures over and over again. Like most ESL games it creates an interactive learning environment where students are competing against one another and trying to find the missing card at a quick pace.

6. Warm Up Games (hands on head)

Just like for ESL beginner level classes, using warm up games is the perfect way to get the class moving. I like to use total physical response warm up games for intermediate level classes to help stimulate their brains.

How to play
The teacher breaks the class up into two groups and gives them each a category. The teacher then says a word or sentence from the category and the students correlating with that category have to put their hands on their heads.

Example
Give one team a category of household items and the other a category of food. Shout out words from each category. To make it more challenging use sentences involving the selected category.

How this ESL classroom game teaches English
Hands on head is awesome for using listening skills while learning English. Students will also have to think about current and past words they have learned in order to know when to put their hands on their heads.

7. Secret Box

Secret Box can be tailored to whatever topic or lesson is being taught.

How to play
The teacher will have a box full of objects or items relating to the current lesson. Each student will come up and put their hand into the box, they have to try and guess what’s inside by using describing words. After they have done this, the student then pulls the object out of the box and have to say what it is, shape, color, sound ect.

Examples
I often times like to use this game for my food lesson. I will categorize the box using fruits for one game and vegetables for another. The students love to feel the foods and guess what’s in the box. I have the students guess which food is inside and tell me what color they think it is then after they pull the food out, they have to tell me what the food is, what category it belongs to, the color, shape and if they like it.

Secret box helps students practice current, past and new language. Having to use describing words as well as practicing how to categorize words. Students are also learning by using their 5 senses as it relates to English.

8. Telephone

Telephone can be tailored to whatever topic or lesson is being taught.

How to play
The teacher puts the students into a line or circle and says a sentence to the first student in the line. The students have to whisper the sentence to the next student until it gets to the final student at the end of the line.

The final student then tells the class what they think the teacher’s sentence was. You can switch up the line so the students all have a turn being at the beginning and the end of the telephone.

Example
Telephone is a great game to use when practicing sentence structure and pronunciation. If the topic is, I like/I don’t like, then I will use phrases or sentences using those words. To make it harder I will add in and/or/but to challenge the students. “I like apples, but I don’t like pears ect.”

How this ESL classroom game teaches English
Telephone is a great game for pronunciation of current words as well as new words. If the sentences are funny or the students mess up it makes the words more memorable because it is being learned in a fun and interactive way. It is also a great time for the teacher to ask follow up questions to the phrase or sentence that was being used in the game, this helps with student interaction as a class.

9. Board Race

Board race can be tailored to whatever topic or lesson is being taught.

How to play
Students are put into two groups. The teacher says a category and the students have to run up to the board and write as many things belonging to the category as they can think of. Students have to use correct spelling and work as a team to come up with the most words before the timer runs out.

Example
I like to use this game for many topics. Animals, colors, shapes ect. You can make the game more challenging by having the students use sentences. For example, the teacher would say “Use Blue in a sentence”, then the student would have to create a small sentence using the word blue.

How this ESL classroom game teaches English
Students love this game because they get to race against one another and have to win. They are practicing grammar and often times will repeat the words in the categories to look back to see which words are missing. When they use it to write sentences they are again focusing on grammar and sentence structure as well as reading and writing.

10. Hot Seat

Hot seat can be tailored to whatever topic or lesson is being taught, but is one of my favourite ESL classroom games.

How to play
The teacher will put the students into two groups and a chair in front of the board. The teacher holds up a flashcard behind the hot seat, this can be a picture or a word. The students have to try and get their teammate to guess what’s behind the hot seat using describing words. This can also be played in reverse by using actions without being able to speak.

Example
I use this game as a warm up game a lot of times because it gets the students brain moving. You can use any category of flashcards, I like to use this game for foods and animals. The students will have to use describing words about both categories and it is fun to switch it up and have them act it out with no sound.

How this ESL classroom game teaches English
Hot seat is perfect for students to have to use their words and think quickly on the spot. They are practicing memory of vocabulary words as well as pronunciation and having to think back to the English vocabulary they already know in order to get their classmate to guess what is behind them.

ESL/EFL Games for Teaching English to Young Children

Young children can be enthusiastic and active learners. Here are some ESL games for kids that are fun and engaging yet not too complex for young learners.

The What’s Missing Game

In this memory game, the teacher puts about 10-15 target vocabulary words on the board. This can be done by taping flashcards to the board or simply by writing the words or drawing pictures.

The students line up in front of the board and are given about a minute to try to memorize all the vocabulary words they see. Then, the students must turn around so they can’t see the board (no peeking!) and the teacher removes one of the words. Students turn back around and must guess what’s missing. The first student to say the correct word gets a point! (If you use flashcards, you can hand the student the card as an easy way to keep score.)

H-A-N-G-M-A-N

This is a great ESL kids game to have your students practice vocabulary and spelling skills.

The goal of the game is to guess the word before a full stick figure is drawn, “hanging” the man.

Categories

This is another fun game for practicing vocabulary. Brainstorm with your students to come up with a list of categories (maybe from new vocabulary you have recently taught), and write each category on a flashcard. Examples could be colors, jobs, or verbs. Choose two students to stand up. Call out a category and a letter of the alphabet (for example, “colors” and “b”). The first student to come up with something from within that category that begins with the letter is the winner and remains standing. Chose another student to go against the winner, and repeat with a new category and letter.

Bingo

For this classic game adapted for young learners, you can either create bingo cards and a call sheet or print them out from a website such as this one: https://bingobaker.com/. For your call sheet, you can use the usual numbers and letters or get more creative with vocabulary you have recently taught. For very young students, use pictures instead of words.

Cut up the call sheet and put the squares into a hat. Give each student a bingo card as well as something to mark their card with. Allow each student a turn to be the “caller.” Have the caller pick one square at a time from the hat and call out what is on the square. The other students listen for what is called and mark the called word or image on their card. The first student to mark their entire bingo card calls out “Bingo!” and is the winner.

Alphabet Relay

To play this ESL game for children, divide your students into two groups. Have each group write the letters of the alphabet on pieces of paper you give them to make flashcards. Shuffle each group of flashcards and place them in two piles on one side of the room. Have each group line up on the opposite side of the room. On the word “Go,” the first student in each line has to run across the room, find the letter A, and bring it back to their group. The next student finds the letter B, and so on. The first group to get to Z wins!

Memory

Pick five small objects and hide them under a piece of cloth. Show the objects to your students for a minute or two and then cover up the objects again. See how many of the objects your students can remember. Add more objects to make the game more challenging.

Telephone

Students form a circle and one student starts by whispering a sentence into the ear of the student next to them. Have students incorporate at least one new vocabulary word or the newly-learned grammar structure in their sentence. The second student then whispers the same sentence in the next student’s ear, and so on. At the end of the circle, have the last student say the sentence out loud and see how close (or hilariously far) it is from the original sentence!

Ball Toss

Keep an inflatable ball in your classroom (or use something else, like a balled-up piece of paper, in a pinch!). Choose a question/instruction based on the lesson/level you just taught, e.g., “Name a fruit!” The student must answer and then toss the ball to another student to answer. Change the question mid-game. The random nature of the ball toss keeps students on their toes.

EFL/ESL Games for Teaching English to Teenagers

Teenagers and students with more experience with English are typically better able to use it in a more productive and communicative fashion. These ESL games can be a great way to get your teenage or intermediate learners involved in the classroom and prompt them to use their knowledge of English.

English Only!

Turn it into a competition to speak only English during the whole period. Keep a tally on the whiteboard for each time a student speaks in their native tongue. This keeps them focusing on English, and fellow students even turn into “English police.” To turn it into a reward/consequences game that everyone can enjoy, have the student with the most tallies bring a treat for the whole class next time. Cookies for everyone!

Balloon Sentence Race

This high-energy game (from the Bridge Specialized TEFL/TESOL Certification Course in Teaching Teenagers) incorporates balloon popping and cell phones, so it’s perfect for teens or young adults. It can also be adapted to a variety of language levels and target grammar.

Students play the game in the following way:

Around the World

Have one student stand next to a seated student. The standing student must make it around the world (around the class) by correctly answering the question before each of the seated students does. An example of a question might be “What is the correct past tense ending of [insert an infinitive verb]?” Change the verb with each turn. If the standing student can answer correctly enough times to make it around the class, they have won! If a standing student is defeated by the seated student, they switch places and it is the new student’s turn to try to make it around the world.

Hot Potato

Pass a ball or other object around the room and when the music stops, the student with the ball has to answer a question, make a question, or draw a prompt out of a bag — you decide, though it is best to stick to one format for the duration of the game!

Roll the Dice, Make a Question

Write the numbers one through six on the board and a different question word (who, what, why, where, when, how) next to each one. When a student rolls the dice, he or she needs to make a question with the corresponding question word. Then, the student will call on a classmate to answer it.

Minimal Pairs

Use minimal pairs (words that sound similar and are often mispronounced by EFL learners) to make a list on the board. Examples: 1. very 2. berry 3. kitchen 4. chicken 5. three 6. tree 7. sixty 8. sixteen 9. sit 10. six. Students must write a number five or six digits long and then say their number using only the corresponding words. For example, if the student’s number is 23354, they’d have to say “berry, kitchen, kitchen, three, chicken.” Students take turns listening and trying to guess the other student’s number.

Never-Ending Story

Students form a circle (this can be as a whole class or in small groups). Write a sentence that could start a story, ideally incorporating vocabulary or grammar from the day’s lesson. Give the sentence to the first student, who continues the story by writing the second sentence before she passes it to the next student, who continues. At the end of the circle, have a student read the completed story. It is sure to get a laugh!

Your Day in Emojis

Using your phone, make a pictorial representation of any day in your recent past using only emojis. Take a screenshot, and then share it with your students (either give them handouts or display it on your screen if teaching online). Individually, with partners, or in groups, have students make simple past sentences about your emojis.

For example, using the photo above, which represents a Saturday, they could say something like, “She slept in. She woke up and ate breakfast. She watched some TV. Then, she went to the park for a run. Next, she went home and read while she listened to music. Later, she got a coffee with her friends. Finally, she went home and slept.” It’s funny to see what your students come up with! Whichever student/pair/team is closest to correct wins.

Afterward, have students make an emoji pictorial of their own weekends (or any day in the near past) on their phones. Then, see if the other students can figure out what they did from the emojis.

Teaching English is an awesome way to travel more while doing meaningful work. With most teaching positions, there’s a good chance that lesson planning will be part of your job description, and integrating games for English class into your day will be a must.

Interesting and fun classroom games for teaching English are an essential part of your teacher tool kit and can make a regular lesson memorable for your students.

In this post, I’ll share some of my top fun games to play in English class after more than six years in the teaching profession.

I started teaching in a traditional classroom and later transitioned to teaching English online. After working with over a thousand kiddos around the world in different settings, one thing is always the same: students love playing games!

I loved playing games with my students — it’s the best way to engage with them and help them learn

Whether you’re an online instructor or a traditional TEFL classroom teacher, you can use these English teaching activities to add some fun to your lessons.

These activities can be adjusted up or down depending on the age of your students. Most can be played either individually or in groups, depending on the class size you’re working with.

Here are my 5 recommend games for English class, plus some teaching tips below.

1. The Categories Game

For this game, students will try to identify as many words in a category as they can. The teacher will give the students a specific topic and the students must quickly list words related to that topic.

This activity can be played individually or in small groups. So if you’re teaching online one-on-one it will work, and if you’re teaching a small group of about 5 or 6 students, this game will work as well.

First, choose a category that is related to the material the students have been learning. For example, if you’ve been teaching a lesson about different foods, you could make the category fruits, vegetables, junk food, breakfast foods, etc.

Start a timer for two minutes and tell the students they can begin. Their goal is to see who can write down the most words that fit in that category in the time allowed. The student/team that gets the most words in their category wins.

It’s helpful to do a demonstration round before allowing students to play independently.

Choose a different category and write it on your whiteboard (or piece of paper). Then brainstorm with students to come up with a list of correct responses so students see what kinds of answers you’re looking for.

For example, if you decide the practice category is “Fruit,” you could work with students to write out a list of fruits on the board together — apple, orange, banana, etc.

Leave the list on the board while playing with different categories so that students can see the example responses for reference.

This game makes a great review exercise before a quiz or test, as well as a good warm-up activity.

Sample Categories

Desired Student Output: Vocabulary. Quick recall of target vocabulary words

Grouping: Students can either work individually or in small groups, depending on your class size.

Level: Intermediate-Advanced depending on the category

2. Sentence Scramble Race

For this activity, students will be putting the words of a sentence in the correct order. This is one of the best games for English class online (or in-person) to build grammar awareness and sentence construction skills.

This game can be played individually or in small groups.

First, choose a sentence you would like your students to unscramble. Write each word of the sentence on an index card. Shuffle the cards around and give them to the student face down and out of order.

When you say “Go,” the student must make a logical sentence with the correct subject-verb-object structure.

The first student to make a correct sentence wins!

If you’re playing this ESL game online, you simply write the words on your whiteboard or on a piece of paper and students write them in the correct order on their end, or you can have them verbally say the correct order.

Having a whiteboard is a must for playing games in a classroom

If your student is more advanced, you can extend this activity by asking them to identify the parts of the sentence like adjectives, nouns, and verbs.

You can also give students multiple sentences and punctuation marks and have them do this activity for a paragraph.

Sample Sentences And Paragraphs

Desired Student Output: Grammar. The student will be able to put the words in the sentence in the correct order, following correct grammar rules.

Grouping: Students can either work individually or in small groups, depending on your class size.

Level: Beginner-Advanced depending on the complexity of the sentence/paragraph

3. All About Me Presentation (one of the best English class games)

A great way to break the ice with a new group of students (or an individual student) is to assign an “All About Me” activity.

In this fun classroom activity, students will learn some basic sentence frames they can use to talk about themselves. They will learn more about their classmates at the same time.

In the “All About Me” presentation, each student will draw a self-portrait. Under their picture, they will answer questions using complete sentences.

Sample “About Me” Questions

This project is most effective if each student presents their answers to practice their speaking skills. Depending on the comfort level of your students, they can either present to the full class or present to a partner or small group.

Allow students to practice together beforehand so they feel confident reading their sentences. For ESL games online, you would have your students draw the self-portrait on a whiteboard or chalkboard, or even a piece of paper to show the camera.

Desired Student Output: Speaking. The students will be able to speak about themselves in complete sentences.

Grouping: Individual presentation, can practice in partners or groups

Level: Beginner

4. Two Truths And A Lie

This is one of the better English games for students who are more advanced (maybe at high school class) and it can be a fun “Get to know you” activity as well.

Ask students to write three sentences about themselves, two that are true and one that is a lie.

Tell students that each person will read the three sentences and the class will guess which one is the lie — for one-on-one classes, this still works between you and your student.

Demonstrate this activity by doing it yourself on the board. Some students might be more visual than auditory and writing your facts on the board while explaining the game can help different types of learners understand the activity.

Ask students to guess which statement is not true. You can put a large checkmark next to the true sentences and an x through the false sentence to reinforce this.

Two truths and a lie is one of the fun activities for English class online (high school students)

Give students time to think of their own sentences and write them down. Then allow students to present one at a time while their classmates guess which sentence is the lie.

This is one of the better ESL games online (and in-classroom) for intermediate-advanced students.

Sample Sentences

Desired Student Output: Listening. The student will use listening comprehension skills to determine if statements are true or false.

Grouping: Students will create sentences about themselves independently. The presentations can be with the full class or in small groups.

Level: Intermediate-Advanced

5. Show And Tell

I love playing this game in my in-person and online English classrooms because it gives the students a chance to talk about something they’re passionate about.

For show and tell, each student is instructed to bring one of their favorite items to class. They will show the class the item and talk about it.

To introduce this activity, I demonstrate first by bringing in an item from my own home (a special scarf, a photo of my family, a bracelet I got while traveling, a piece of fruit, etc). I tell them what the item is and describe how it looks using the five senses.

“This is a scarf. It is yellow and it feels soft. I cannot taste it. I cannot hear it. It smells like perfume.”

If the students are more advanced, I tell them where it is from, how I got it, and why it is special. Then I allow them to ask questions about the object.

“I got this scarf from my grandmother. I got it for Christmas last year. It is special because it reminds me of her. Do you have any questions about this scarf?”

By demonstrating the show and tell first, students see exactly what the expected output is.

Students should write the answers to these questions in full sentences before they present. You can also allow students to practice presenting their items with a partner before sharing with the class.

If your student is unable to bring an item, you can also allow them to look up a picture of their item on the internet and present that, or take a photo of their item and bring it in.

Desired Student Output: Speaking. The student will be able to describe an object using their 5 senses, using full-sentence speaking skills.

Grouping: Individual assignment, presented to either small groups or the full class.

English Teaching Terminology

For both in-person and English games for online classes, here is some terminology you’ll need to know.

Modeling

When you model an activity, you demonstrate exactly what you want the student to do. This shows students what the activity is rather than telling them.

Whenever you teach a new game, it’s helpful to model the exercise to completion with your students to show them what you’re looking for.

For example, if I wanted my students to make paper airplanes, I would show them exactly how to fold the paper while making my own airplane rather than just verbally explaining how to do it.

Student Output

This is the desired outcome that you want the student to produce by the end of the activity. For English activities, sample student outputs might be:

Scaffold Up and Down

There’s a chance you’ll have students with different ability levels in your classroom at the same time.

I like to prepare a slightly less difficult and a slightly more difficult version of the same activity so I can adjust on the fly. If I notice a student is struggling or not being challenged enough, I can alter their activity to better suit their needs.

For example, if I’m doing the sentence scramble activity, I might give a more advanced learner a complex sentence and an emerging learner a simpler sentence.

Utilize these tips to ensure a fun and engaging class with your students.

Accommodate Different Learning Styles

The main learning styles are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic, or “seeing,” “hearing,” and “doing.” When giving instructions, try to address as many learning styles as you can.

Write things down and say them so that students receive the information in multiple ways. There’s a better chance your students will understand what is expected of them if you explain it visually and verbally.

Bonus points if you leave the instructions written on the board during class so that students can re-read them if they forget what they’re supposed to do.

Use Anchor Charts

If you discover a particular activity that your students like, use one of those giant sticky note pads to make an anchor chart with directions for the activity.

An anchor chart is a poster you can permanently hang in your classroom and reference often. If a game has three steps, write the steps out on the anchor chart with a simple illustration for each step.

This way you can start the game quickly in the future.

Ask Follow Up Questions

When you play the games above, encourage your students to dig deeper by asking follow-up questions.

For example, if you play the Categories Game and your student names six different fruits, ask them which fruit is their favorite.

If you play Two Truths And A Lie and one of your students “Truths” is that they went snorkelling, ask them where they went and what animals they saw.

Always Have An Extra Activity On Standby

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned as a teacher is that you never know how long lessons will take with each group of students.

Some groups may fly through a game and others may take longer. A project that you thought would last one day might last three. And a game that was supposed to take thirty minutes might only take ten.

As a teacher, it’s better to be over-prepared than underprepared. Always have an extra lesson ready to go in your teacher toolbox so you’ll be covered if the unexpected happens.

Games for kids for english lessons

Running out of tricks? Here are some quick vocabulary games for kids that every ESL/EFL teacher can rely on anytime of the day. They require little to no preparation and some can be given to kids and adult learners by adjusting the level of difficulty.

Vocabulary Games for Kids

1. Anagrams

The teacher writes preferably an 8-letter word or longer on the board and students make as many new words as they can using all the original letters from the given word exactly once. The team that produces the most number of words after the time runs out wins the game.

Variation: When checking the answers, cross out common words that appear in at least two of the teams. The team with most number of unique words wins the game. You may also vary the point scale with higher point goes to difficult or longer words.

2. Jumbled Word

The teacher writes a scrambled word on the board that students need to un-jumble in their teams, e.g LEJMUB –> JUMBLE. The first team that guesses and spells the word correctly gets the points.

Variation: For more advanced students, you may give 3 or more jumbled words at once which they need to solve in 1 minute. Points earned per correct answer. You may also try giving scrambled sentence which will test both vocabulary and grammar.

3. Message Relay

The participants are divided into groups and each group forms a line. The person in front will be given a message and must pass it correctly to the next person by whispering until the student in front of the line writes it down. The goal is to get the message relayed to the last person intact and without any changes. If the sentence is perfect they get a point.

4. Back Spell

A kind of relay game where teams of equal size sit down in a neat line. The first student of each row should have a board and marker (but a pen and paper will do). Teacher gives a word to the last students at the end of each line. They need to pass the word along by drawing the word, letter by letter onto the back of the person in front of them until it reaches the first person at the front of the line who need to write the word on their board or paper. The first team to spell the word correctly wins the game.

Variation: You may give different words with the same amount of letters to the last student of each row to prevent cheating. You might also want to teach them some actions or signs before playing the game such as tapping or shaking their head to signify “repeat the drawing”.

5. Simple Simon Says

One of the classic vocabulary games for kids for teaching imperatives, parts of the body or simply as a classroom management. The teacher gives a command by saying “Simon says ___” and students obey, e.g “Simon says… put your hands on your head.” Players are eliminated from the game by following a command that is not immediately preceded by the phrase “Simon says”, or by failing to follow an instruction which does include the phrase.

Variation: You may ask one of the students to act as “Simon” and give commands to the whole class. The object for the player acting as Simon is to get all the other players out as quickly as possible; the winner of the game is usually the last player who has successfully followed all of the given commands.

6. Hangman

The teacher draws a row of dashes on the board representing each letter of the word that he wants the students to guess. If the guessing player suggests a letter which occurs in the word, the teacher writes it in all its correct positions. If the suggested letter or number does not occur in the word, the teacher draws one element of a hanged man stick figure as a tally mark.

Variation: Split the class into two teams to compete against each other and associate each team with a different marker color, e.g black v blue. Play hangman regularly except now each team gets one guess per round. When the class solves the mystery word, the point goes to the team that guesses more letters. You may also give each team points equal to the number of letters they have guessed.

7. Rock, Paper, Scissors!

Form two teams with equal number students who will line up and compete against each other. The first person from each line will meet at the center and play Rock, Paper, Scissors. The winner can ask the other player to give a word from a category or to answer trick questions. If the player answers incorrectly, they are out and the first team to get all the players from the other team out is the winner.

8. Pass the Ball

Students make a big circle and pass a ball in one direction (clockwise or the other way around) while the teacher is playing a music. The student who is holding the ball when the music is paused will give a word from a given category, i.e. countries, animals, verbs, etc. If the player repeats a word that has already been said or fails to give a word after 5 seconds, he is out of the game. My students love this game specially when I play an upbeat pop song that they know!

Variation: Without the music, start by tossing the ball at a student who will give a word related to the category. He/she will then throw the ball to another student.

9. Linking Words

This is a word association game where the teacher gives 2 words (example: “house and soda”) and students have to link the words by inserting other related/relevant words in between, i.e “house – kitchen – refirgerator – soda”. You may decide the number of words the player can use to link.

10. Guessing Games

Divide the class into two or three teams and in turns, ask one student from each team to come to the front. The student picks a word and conveys the word to his team. This game can be done using actions (charades) or drawings (pictionary) where student pantomimes or draws the word, respectively. I usually tell my students to choose whichever they feel more comfortable using to convey their ideas across. The team must guess the word correctly before the time runs out. If not, other teams may have the chance to “steal” and gets the points if their answer is correct.

11. Slap the Board

This game works best with beginner students. The teacher writes words arranged randomly on the board and calls one player from each team to stand equidistantly from the board. The teacher will say one of the words and students should run up to the board and slaps the word when they find it.

Variation: A variant of this game is called “Swat It!” where students use fly swatters to swat the word instead of slapping the board.

12. Word Association

In this game, students may stay in their seats or make a circle. The aim is to say a word that are associated together. Start by saying a word related to your lesson or topic. The first student will say aloud any word that they associate with your given word. The next player will then do the same with the previous word, and so on, i.e “tomato –> red –> Mars…” The student who gives an unrelated/dissociated word is out. Make the game more challenging by making the exchanges fast (maybe only 5 seconds to think?!).

13. Bingo

The teacher gives students a list of 20 words, phrases or sentences and ask them to copy 7 words they want on their notebook. The teacher then gives the definition of a random word from the list but does not say the word itself. If students think they have the word the teacher defines, they tick it. The student who ticks all 7 words they had chosen shouts BINGO and wins the game.

14. Rhyme Charades

This is a good way to teach students rhyming words. The teacher gives and example by saying, “I’m thinking of a word that rhymes with ‘Light’” Teacher then calls a student who thinks he knows the answer. But instead of saying the word, the student goes to the front and pantomime his guess. (For example, the student might act like he is becoming taller if he is thinking of the word ‘Height’). The rest of the class will then guess what the student is miming. If one of the students mentions the correct answer even if it isn’t what the actor is doing, it won’t be counted as a correct guess.

To get the students involved, I usually split the class into two teams. I give each team a whiteboard where they can write their chosen word to prevent them from changing it once the other team has correctly mimed the answer.

15. What’s on the List

I don’t know what to call this game so I’m just calling it this way. Divide the class into two teams and give each team a mini-whiteboard or a paper. Let the team leaders pick a topic written on strips of paper. Give them 2-4 minutes (depending on their level) to shortlist 12 items related to the topic they’ve got. When the time is over, tell whoever goes first the topic of the other team. They have 30 seconds to guess what’s on the list and will get a point for each item they guess correctly. Play as many rounds as you want with different topics. The team with the highest points wins the game!

16. Human Tic-Tac-Toe

This is a usual tic-tac-toe game, but with a twist! First, divide the class in two teams, X and O. Arrange 9 chairs in three rows and three columns or draw the grid on the floor using a chalk or dry erase marker. Now start asking questions from your lesson or topic. The group that gets the answer correctly gets to sit on the chair or take a spot on the grid. When using the latter, I tell the Xs to sit down and the Os to stand up to avoid confusion. Whichever group forms 3 first, either diagonally, horizontally or vertically, wins the game.

17. Dice Game

Choose 6 categories and assign 1 category to each number on the dice. Give each group a die. Students take turns rolling the dice and give words under each corresponding category.

18. Oral Spelling

Teacher has a list of new vocab words handy. Groups of students form single-file lines. Teacher says a vocabulary word. Each student down the line says 1 letter until the word is spelled. If a mistake is made, spelling starts over with the next person in line.

Board Games in the Lessons

Today we are living in the era of gamification. Not a single English lesson seems to go without a game. We all know how important and useful various board games are. Today’s article is going to be on how we can use them in our lessons.

Roll and Move Games

In this game, we usually have dice or a coin to flip. The dice/coins show the number of steps we have to take. The idea is to get to the finish square as fast as we can. This game is perfect for pairs and small groups. Otherwise, students are likely to get bored while waiting for their turn.
The best way to use these games is to download a template and complete it with the grammar/vocab/structures we want our students to practice.

Blocks

Children’s building blocks are perfect when teaching them word order in sentences. It is as simple as that – stick words on the blocks (one block – one word). Ask your students to make positive/negative sentences or questions. If possible, use one colour for one part of speech. His will add visuals to your grammar.

Checkers

Use a template and add the tasks to the board or prepare a task (gap-fill, multiple choice, etc.) before a student has a go. The element of gamification adds emotion to dull tasks, so students become more careful and motivated in coping with them.

Scrabble

This one would be nice for higher level students (intermediate+) who have a nice range of vocabulary. The rules are simple: make a word using letters and get as many points as you can. Each turn a player takes seven tiles from the bag and tries to make a word. If they cannot, they can exchange tiles or pass. Different tiles have a different value. The game is suitable for 2 to 4 players.

This one can be used from the very first lesson with your beginner students. The idea of the game is to get rid of all your cards as fast as possible. The deck is put on the desk and one card is flipped over. Each student has seven cards. A student must put a card on the flipped one. It should have the same colour or number. So it means that we can practice colours and numbers here. What is more, we can add any lexis we need to revise: say a word from the topic “Environment” and off you go. When you have one card left, you shout “UNO!” or “ONE CARD!” There are some nasty surprises in this game so it is not so easy to win, anyway.

Dixit

Nice game for 3 to 6 players. You have to deal with associations here. A presenter puts a card on the desk face down. He or she gives an association to what is on their card. The other players put a card with their association to what the presenter has said. The cards are all face down. They are shuffled. Then students vote for the best card which matches the association of the presenter. Everyone gets points. That is where the speaking practice is required. Students can be asked to explain their association or choose a better card.

Apples to Apples

A game similar to Dixit, but deals with sentences, not pictures. Students have to choose a noun card to an adjective card. It is designed for native speakers, so your student should be at least upper-intermediate to succeed in it. You can watch this video to get the idea of how to play it.

Jenga

The game which dares you to pull a block out of a built tower. There is nothing linguistic in it unless you add some linguistic elements to it. There are hundreds of variations:

Spoons

This game is fantastic for practising spelling and revising words. However, it needs some preparation. Prepare 20-25 cards for each letter of the alphabet (on the whole you will have 520-650 cards). The cards shouldn’t be big, 5*5 cm is enough. To last longer, it is a good idea to laminate your cards.

Put all the cards on the table face up. Put some plastic spoons on the table. The number of spoons should be one spoon fewer than the number of students playing (if you have 4 students, you prepare 3 spoons). Put a word or a set of words on the board.

Students have to spell the word by looking for the corresponding letters in the pile. When the first student finishes spelling, he or she grabs a spoon. The other students do the same. The last student writes S on a piece of paper. Whoever spells the word “spoon” first losses.

Red Rover

We can’t think of a better classic outdoor activity for kids than a game of red rover. Bring your group of kids together and separate them into 2 teams. The first team decides who from the other team they want on their side. The team calls out “red rover, red rover, let (name) come on over”!

The chosen player then runs towards the other team (who have their hands joined together in a line) and tries to breakthrough. If they can’t get between the two players they ran through, then they have to join that team.

Jump rope

Jumping rope is fun for one or all! You can have kids take turns jumping and counting each other’s jumps or have them join in with 2 jump ropes with their friends jumping in between.

This classic activity is always fun for everyone involved and can be done alone or in a group.

Chinese Jump rope

Chinese jump rope is a bit different than the original style of jump rope we are all used to, but it is still a classic.

This activity resembles hopscotch and uses various moves combined to create patterns while singing rhyming chants. It is truly a classic and so much fun! Two players meke a string around their ankles so that it is taut. The other player should jump to accomplish a series of difficult moves. There are some chants to say while playing:

Hopscotch

Hopscotch may have been the very first outside game we all learned as a child. It is very easy to play. First, you number rectangles that are in a pattern. The player tosses an object like a bean bag onto the pattern. Wherever it lands, the player must then hop or jump through all the spaces to retrieve the bean bag.

Hopscotch can be played alone or in groups. It is a very physical game that sharpens up cognitive skills.

Four Square

Four square is a game that is played on a square court. The court is divided into 4 equal quadrants. You need 4 players for this competitive outdoor activity.

The object of the game is to eliminate other players until you have reached the highest rank by bouncing a ball back and forth between the squares.

Spikeball is a net sport. This game involves 2 teams. A player serves the ball down onto the net to spike it up at their opponents. The returning team has up to 3 hits to return the ball back to the net. This action is repeated until a team can’t get the ball back to the net.

Frisbee

A frisbee is a plastic disc that skims through the air and creates a fun-filled outside activity for teens. Tossing it back and forth in a yard, a park, the beach, or anywhere can be one of the most fun outdoor activities.

Bike Riding

One of the most classic ways for teens to get together and stay active is to go for a simple bike ride. This outdoor activity can be as fast-paced or as laid back as you want it to be. Go ahead and get a group of friends together and go bike riding, you won’t be disappointed.

KanJam

KanJam is a sporty flying disc game. Each side is made up of two players who take turns tossing the disc between 2 plastic cans. A point is scored if the disc hits or is deflected into one of the cans.

The game is over when one side reaches the target score of 21. KanJam is so fun and interactive. Your kids and teens will love playing this outside activity.

Flashcard games are perfect when teaching English online to kids. All you need is some flashcards and some flashcard game ideas. You can download hundreds of FREE flashcards, large and small, from our flashcard page. Read on for some flashcard game ideas to use when teaching English online.

Flashcard Guessing Games

Flashcard guessing games are very effective when teaching English to kids online. There are many ways to play guessing games with flashcards. For example, after practicing the keywords with the flashcards, choose one and don’t show the students. Then, ask them to guess what it is. You can even introduce points to make it more fun. If there are 8 flashcards, then if the student guesses correctly with just one guess then they get 8 points. If it takes them 2 guesses, then they get 7 points. And so on.

Then it’s the teacher’s turn. Choose a card without looking and hold it up to the webcam so the student can see what it is. Then start guessing what it is. Simple guessing games with flashcards like this are very effective with young learners when teaching English online.

Memory Games

Flashcards can also be used for many types of memory games when teaching English online. For example, print out 2 sets of the same flashcards and attach them to a board with the picture hidden. Then ask students to choose 2 flashcards. If the flashcards match, the student gets a point. If they don’t match, turn them back over to hide the picture again.

Of course, you may not have a board to attach the flashcards to while teaching online from home. In that case, there are other memory games you can try. For example, you could show students the flashcards in a particular order and ask them to remember the order in which you showed them. Then ask them to recite the flashcards in the same order.

If they can do it easily, introduce more flashcards. Alternatively, you could remove one or two flashcards and then ask the student to guess ‘What’s missing?’. Memory games like these are simple online teaching games which kids really enjoy. All you need is some flashcards.

Find Something…

‘Find Something’ is a very simple but effective game that you can use while teaching English online to kids. Simply tell your student to find something which you are focusing on in your lesson. For example, if you are teaching colors, you might tell your student to find something red. Give the student ten seconds to find something in his/her house that is red. Then ask them ‘What is it?’ and they can answer ‘It’s a red (pencil.)’

This concept can be applied to many different lessons. You can even ask your student to find something that begins with a certain letter (e.g. find something beginning with the letter b) as a fun warm-up activity. To make this game even more fun, you could ask your student to challenge you to find something too.

I spy Game

The ‘I Spy’ game is another kind of guessing game. The game is very simple. Choose something you can see in the room, or in the student’s room, and don’t tell the student what it is. Then, give the student a clue like this: ‘I spy with my little eye something beginning with (b).‘ The student must then guess what object you are thinking of that they can see which starts with the letter b. Once the student guesses correctly, then it’s his/her turn to look around the room and choose something.

Drawing Game

Drawing games can be a really fun way to practice listening skills with students while teaching English online. For example, you could describe a picture that you have drawn, or describe an object/flashcards and ask the student to listen to your description and try to draw what you are describing.

For example, if you are practicing describing people, you might say ‘He has big blue eyes. He has short hair. He has a big nose.‘, etc. Then, once the student has finished his/her drawing, show the student the original picture/object and compare. Kids find this game really fun and often make some hilarious drawings. Check out more drawing games online.
