Def Jam: Fight for NY: The Takeover Review
The newest Def Jam fighter may be an update of a nearly two-year-old game, but this PSP brawler still packs a punch.

The trend of old games getting new life on the PlayStation Portable rolls on unabated with Def Jam: Fight for NY: The Takeover, an updated version of 2004’s Def Jam: Fight for NY. A weird mixture of wrestling, fighting, and hip-hop, Fight for NY was one of the big surprises of that year, providing a brutally enjoyable combat system and an oddly engaging character-customization system to go along with some great presentational components. Ultimately, it’s because that original game was so great that The Takeover manages to fly. It’s certainly not because of new or original content, because this port is decidedly lacking in that area. But if you never got around to playing Fight for NY on consoles, you’ll find that The Takeover is a great way to experience what you missed out on.
Think of Def Jam like Battle of the Network Stars, but with rappers instead of low-rent TV celebrities, and actual battling instead of lame track and field events.
For those uninitiated into Def Jam’s urban world, the basic premise of the series is that New York’s underground is run by a series of street-fighting crews. Money is made and respect is earned by these various brawlers by duking it out in arenas across the five boroughs. Also, many of the brawlers are played by real-life hip-hop personalities, ranging from East Coasters like Busta Rhymes and Method Man to West Coast stars like Snoop Dogg and Xzibit to dirty South crew members like Ludacris and David Banner. There’s even a few celebrities from outside the confines of the hip-hop world, with actors like Omar Epps (House, Dracula 2000), Danny Trejo (Heat, Con Air), and Henry Rollins (Heat, Jack Frost) all making appearances as playable fighters. All told, there are 68 fighters available in the game, with a significant portion of those being real-life people.
The clashes of these various personalities and characters occur primarily within the game’s story mode. Though The Takeover’s storyline deviates from the original game’s (it’s actually supposed to be a prequel to the older Def Jam games, despite its liberal recycling of characters and situations from Fight for NY), you’ll still play a nameless up-and-coming thug brought into the world of underground street fighting after rescuing one of the game’s personalities from certain doom (in this case, Manny, the tattoo artist and fighter, rather than D-Mob, the gang boss from Fight for NY). Once you’re in, you’re given the opportunity to sculpt your character using the same type of sketch-artist system as the first game. There aren’t a ton of options available from the get-go, but you can make a suitable character of varying races, builds, and facial constructions. When that’s over with, it’s on to battle.
After you’ve claimed one of the five boroughs as your hood, you get to work almost immediately, jumping into battle against the various brawlers of this fair city. You’ll be doing a lot of fighting, too, so it’s good that the fighting engine is so strong. Like the Def Jam games before it, The Takeover uses a version of the old AKI wrestling game engine, though this isn’t just a wrestling game. Each character is given a choice of up to five fighting styles, including wrestling, submissions, kickboxing, martial arts, and street fighting. When you start out, you can only choose one basic style, but over time, you’ll earn training points that can be used to buy both new moves and new styles. In all, you’ll be able to add up to three different styles to your arsenal. Combining new styles fundamentally changes the dynamic of how your character plays, as well as what moves he uses. A wrestler will start out relying heavily on grapples, but if you toss in submission moves and eventually kickboxing, you’ll find yourself shifting more toward kicking combos that set up for a grapple and lead into a submission hold. And if you prefer to focus your efforts, you can learn the same style three times to up your skill at it and gain new maneuvers.
Many of hip-hop’s best and brightest are on hand here, though the roster is pretty much the same as it was back in 2004.
In the ring, or the arena, or the warehouse, or the bar, or whatever other seedy place you’re fighting in, your goal is to knock your opponent out or make them submit. Most times you’ll just be KOing them, however, and apart from your typical moves and special attacks, you can use the environment to your advantage. Throw opponents up against the wall, grapple them, and then use one of several different ways to smash their face into the aforementioned wall, for example. Or, you can toss an opponent toward the crowd, and they’ll hold the fighter while you walk up and smash a beer bottle over the person’s face. You can even toss clouds of dust into an opponent’s eye if you happen to be on a particularly dirty floor.
With so many different ways to bust down an opponent, and the relative ease of the controls and combos, The Takeover is not an overly tough game. If you find the normal difficulty too breezy, there is a harder difficulty mode. But the satisfaction derived from the combat is more about the sheer brutality of the action than it is the difficulty of it. Every single hit in The Takeover looks like it hurts badly. From the way the camera shudders when you lay in a particularly brutal strike, to the cringe-inducing cracks and smashes of people’s faces, bodies and limbs being broken into pieces, to the sheer ludicrousness of the game’s various finishing maneuvers (playing jump rope with your opponent’s body, anyone?), The Takeover is raucously entertaining in its depiction of street combat.
Beyond the beating and bludgeoning of people, you’ll also spend a great deal of time throughout the story mode upping your rep and customizing your character. Apart from upgrading his fighting skills, you can buy a variety of licensed clothing items, get tattooed to the hilt, acquire new hairstyles, and even buy some bling from hip-hop’s favorite jeweler, Jacob the Jeweler. Though most of these customizations seem purely cosmetic, they play into your fighter’s charisma rating, which determines how quickly you fill up your finishing-attack meter.
Mounted attacks are the one big new gameplay addition, and they fit well into the fighting scheme.
Between the combat and the character upgrades, there’s a lot to like about The Takeover’s story mode. Unfortunately, this storyline isn’t as compelling as its console predecessor. There’s not an awful lot of actual story to this mode, and it comes exclusively from text messages sent to your in-game cell phone and random bits of text-based talking-head dialogue before fights. One of the best things about Fight for NY on consoles was the voice acting from the fighters throughout the story mode, and there’s very little of that here. On the same wavelength, pretty much all the story cutscenes from the console game are gone too, and there aren’t any new ones in their place. The progression also has a meandering feel to it for a while. You spend a lot of time going out and fighting guys for tacked-on reasons described in text messages. Some guy just tagged up some crew member’s new car or someone kidnapped someone’s girl for no explained reason, to give a few examples.
Eventually, you get to the part in the story where the added subtitle of The Takeover starts to make sense, as you will be competing to take control of all five boroughs. But it takes a while to get there, and the ultimate payoff isn’t quite as satisfying as it was in the last game. It’s all well and good that EA didn’t recycle the same storyline from a two-year-old game, but the new story, while reasonably enjoyable, isn’t quite as good.
There’s also not a lot of new content in this game. Outside of the story mode, there’s a basic battle mode where you can fight in any of the available arenas against the computer, and there’s a two-player ad hoc multiplayer mode, but that’s about it. One new fight mechanic has been added to this game in the form of mounted grapples. When an opponent is on the ground, you can perform a grapple that will mount you on top and let you rain down blows on the foe’s helpless skull. If you’re adept at submissions, you can also transition into a hold. This mechanic isn’t exactly game changing, but it does give you more ways to pummel someone silly, and that’s always bonus.
The gritty atmosphere and smooth fighting animations make this one of the best looking PSP games out there.
Another area where The Takeover hasn’t changed much is in the realm of graphics, but in this case, that’s less a criticism and more a laudable feature. The Takeover looks practically as good as the PlayStation 2 version of Fight for NY. You can see a few key areas where the developer skimped on texture quality for the sake of getting the game to run smoothly (specifically, in clothing textures and crowd graphics), but these little sacrifices help immensely. The models for the fighters look absolutely top notch, and the fighting animations are smooth as smooth can be. The frame rate almost never drops, and the action moves at an incredibly quick clip. Even the environmental designs still look excellent. From packed nightclubs featuring a cage to fight in to back alleys with cardboard laid out on the ground to soak up the blood, the game gets the gritty atmosphere right. The lack of voice acting hinders this atmosphere a bit, given the lack of foul-mouthed smack talk between fighters, save for prematch scenarios. However, there’s still plenty of text-based cursing (that’s perhaps a bit overdone) and plenty of uncensored hip-hop making up the soundtrack, all of which is more than appropriate for the theme of the game.
What it boils down to with Def Jam: Fight for NY: The Takeover is that if you already took the plunge with the original Fight for NY back in 2004, there’s nothing particularly pressing about this PSP update to require a purchase. However, if you did happen to miss out on such a quality game back in the day, The Takeover proves to be a great way to get acquainted with what you missed out on and is easily one of the best brawlers available for the PSP system.

Def Jam Fight For NY: The Takeover is a fighting game for the PlayStation Portable. The game is a port of Def Jam: Fight for NY. In addition to nearly all of the features seen in the original game, The Takeover includes new dirty moves, four new venues, and 68 playable characters.
Contents
Story
The game’s story is a prequel to the events of Def Jam Vendetta. However, the game uses many of the same situations and characters from Fight for NY, which is the third game in the series, chronologically. You still play a nameless up-and-coming gangsta brought into the world of underground street fighting after rescuing one of the game’s personalities from trouble with the police. However, instead of D-Mob being freed from police custody, like in Fight for NY, it is tattoo artist Manny who is saved from corrupt police officers. Manny takes you to O.G., your «mentor», who instructs you in how to fight to gain control of (take over) the five boroughs of New York City. Eventually, O.G. is murdered by the hands of Crow, leaving D-Mob to step in and use you as his number one fighter. Ultimately, it is revealed that D-Mob was using you to take over the five boroughs, controlling New York City’s underground, and that he was going to leave you to take the fall, leading police to your exact whereabouts. After defeating D-Mob in the story’s final battle, a one-on-one fight at the 125th Street Station, you decide to leave the underground fight scene for good. D-Mob, eventually recovers from the fight and, with nobody in New York to stop him, builds his empire that is seen in Vendetta.
Character creation is still the same as Fight for NY. Just like in the original, only male characters can be created. You still create your character using the same type of police sketch-artist system. A new addition is choosing your character’s home town from one of the five boroughs of New York City. From there, the game flows similarly to Fight for NY, featuring many of the same fighting arenas and shops with which to upgrade your character’s clothing, jewelry, hair, and fighting moves.
The story is no longer told through fully voiced cutscenes. For The Takeover, certain events are narrated by Manny. The story also progresses through text and messages received on your character’s sidekick communicator.
Also, since the game uses many of the graphical assets seen in 2004’s Fight for NY, it does not reflect physical changes seen in some of the celebrities featured in the game. For example, Busta Rhymes, in the role of Magic, still has his dreadlock hairstyle, which he cut in late 2005. Also, Ludacris still has his cornrow hairstyle, which he would cut in the summer of 2006.
Gameplay
Gameplay remains largely similar to Fight for NY. You still base your character’s fighting style from among a pool of five different fighting styles:

The game’s new features also allows it to make other fighting styles depending on the ones that are chosen such as Capoeira, Jeet Kune Do and Drunken Kung Fu.

«Все то, через что ты проходишь, делает тебя тем, что ты есть»
К сегодняшнему дню на PSP уже понавыходило достаточное количество файтингов – этим жанром наша портативная консоль явно не обделена. Достаточно вспомнить именитых представителей вроде Mortal Kombat или Tekken. Сегодня я хотел бы остановиться на незаслуженно менее популярном их собрате – замечательной игрушке под названием Def Jam Fight For NY: The Takeover.

Aki’s last ever licensed game before retiring from the gaming industry.
A really impressive spinoff of a beloved game and port for the PSP. Aki’s last ever licensed game before retiring from the gaming industry.
A really impressive spinoff of a beloved game and port for the PSP. I love this game. I beat it three times.
The graphics are exactly the same as the other ports of Fight For New York just watered down. The soundtrack is THE best rap soundtrack in a licensed fighting game ever. The sound and sound design like the other ports are superb, brutal and satisfying to listen to. The voice acting is fantastic too.
The gameplay is essentially the same as Fight For New York but with new additions such as pre match beatdowns, pre danger knockouts with blazin move, environment reversals, new fighting styles, a mount mechanic, mount reversal, dazed clinch punches and throwing sand and dirt into the opponents face.
Another mechanic added to the game is the Crew Wars in Story Mode in which you can recruit up to 15 fighters and select one fighter to attack a property in any of the five territories and earn rewards.
The story is a prequel to Fight For New York, it’s non-linear and is presented by text messages and only 4 comic book styled cutscenes which play at specific points unlike Fight For New York in which you follow a path to defeat Crow and become King of New York and is presented with movie styled cutscenes.
The customization system is amazing.
We also get four new arenas: Terminal Overload, Dead End, Barge and Bunker and they are fun to brawl in. Jervis and Starks now have Blazin yells.
The Inferno Match, Free for All Match and Tag Team match types were removed. Suspect, Blaze, D-Mob and Sticky Fingaz costumes, DJ Enuff and DJ Felli Fell commentary, Blazin themes and loading screen music were also removed because of memory limitations.
There are also many mistakes in the game such as Redman having Blaze’s Blazin yell, Magic having Nyne’s Blazing yell and Santos using the Let’s Dance Blazin’ instead of the Filipino Pride. These mistakes could have easily been fixed.
A thing I found disappointing is that the Free for All and Tag Team matches were not included as they probably weren’t able to implement these matches because of the PSP’s capabilities.
The only things that held the game back was that story mode was too short and match types were removed. The game is still so flawless that you can easily ignore this.
Overall a perfect game from Aki Corporation and a great way to retire. … Full Review »

Biography
As the surreal and prime leader of the 1990s gangsta rap era, Snoop Dogg crossed the line between reality and fiction. Introduced to the world through Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, Snoop quickly became a famous star on the rap scene. His rhyming coupled with the violence his lyrics implied created an eerie sense of reality. His debut album, 1993’s Doggystyle, become the first debut album to enter the charts at No. 1. The Doggfather, his second album, was released in November 1996. It featured the single «Murder was the Case.» The solo «Da Game Is to Be Sold Not to Be Told», Snoop’s first effort for No Limit, followed in 1998; No Limit Top Dogg appeared a year later and Dead Man Walkin’ the year after that. Tha Last Meal followed in December of that same year. Late in 2002, Snoop released his first album for Capitol, Paid tha Cost to Be da Bo$$. Snoop has become a cultural phenomenon, appearing in movies such as Training Day, Starsky & Hutch, and Soul Plane.
Role in Def Jam Fight For NY
Snoop Dogg plays the crew boss Crow in Def Jam Fight For NY. Crow started out as a gang-banger on the West Coast before making his way to New York and hooking up with D-Mob’s crew. Formerly D-Mob’s advisor, Crow was dismissed from the crew a few years back after the two failed to see eye-to-eye on business strategies. Since then Crow has been biding his time, looking for an opportunity for payback against his old boss. His operations are based out of Club Murder, up in Washington Heights, and he maintains control of all of Harlem.
Crow makes his first appearance in the storyline after Hero defeats Ice-T in Club 357. After failing to claim the club, he confronts D-Mob and his men claiming that the club will be his eventually angering D-Mob further. Before he leaves, he makes an announcement that those who want to make some real money would join up with his crew before it’s too late. Later on, after losing more clubs, he offers D-Mob a «Winner Takes All» match between both crews best fighters. After Crack’s defeat, he’s seen angrily leaving Club Murder as D-Mob mockingly tells him to send a postcard from New Jersey. He replies by sending three of his men to assassinate D-Mob, which results the loss of Trejo. He later sends Magic to Gun Hill Garage to deliver a message to Hero.
After many failed attempts, Crow confronts Hero at The Limit and offers to double what D-Mob is paying him if he works for him. After Hero refuses, he ambushes Hero in his home with Magic and Sticky and tells him that he kidnapped his girlfriend and if he wants her back, he’ll have to earn back all of his clubs (hiding the fact that they were never going to let her live). After Doc’s defeat, Hero demands Crow to tell him where he’s hiding her. He responds by telling him that he’s got one last job for him, that was to finish off Blaze. Hero manages to betray Crow at the last moment and saves Blaze, then defeats Sticky and saves his girlfriend from the burning tire factory, although she is in a coma as a result of the fire.
Crow is later confronted at his headquarters along with the rest of his men. After he orders his men to take out all of D-Mob’s soldiers, he goes into his office and ambushes Hero with Magic aiming a gun at his head, but was shocked when Magic gave Hero the gun instead. When Hero turned his back on him, when he decided that he wasn’t worth it, Crow stabs him in the back and the attacks, resulting in a tussle that ends with Crow being thrown out the window. With Crow’s, and most of his lieutenants either deceased or defected to D-Mob’s Crew, it’s possible that Crow’s Crew is now disbanded and defunct thanks to the remaining members.

PS:Tekken все равно the best)))

ContentsDef Jam Fight For NYHero first appears saving D-Mob from being arrested. Soon after, he joins D-Mob’s crew after defeating House. At first, many of D-Mob’s lieutenants and top fighters will doubt or be disdainful of Hero’s skills and abilities, most notably Sticky Fingaz, who begins as D-Mob’s top fighter until Hero begins to replace him, and slightly less vocally by others like Ludacris. Fortunately, Hero is quickly befriended by and taken under the wing of Blaze, who is not only one of D-Mob’s top lieutenants but also a major advisor to the underground boss. Soon after, D-Mob arranges a match against the legendary Ice-T for Hero to prove himself to the rest of his crew, in which Hero defeats Ice-T. Afterwards, Crow himself crashes the party, and insults Hero’s looks before making his big announcement. Later, in The Limit, Hero can choose and gain a girlfriend (Cindy J, Kimora Lee, Lil’ Kim or Shawnna) after fighting against Nyne for her; he can get the girlfriend he wanted, or if he loses, Shaniqua, an uglier one, and later, she ends up in a catfight with Carmen Electra over him. The player can then choose to keep his current girl, or switch to Electra. After this, the war heats up, but even though the odds seem to be against D-Mob’s group, the rise of Hero through the ranks, and his ability not only to capture clubs from Crow but also from third party groups, such as the Triad-run Dragon House (unique home of Ring Out Match battles), or the Babylon, run by a Jamaican mob in Brooklyn, begins to offset Crow’s advantages in cash and fighters. Eventually, Crow proposes a winner-take-all Cage Match between Crack, one of Crow’s best and most feared fighters, and D-Mob’s «best man.» D-Mob, with encouragement from Sticky, accepts this deal, only to infuriate Sticky when he picks Hero as his representative. Sticky storms off angrily, but D-Mob encourages Hero not to worry about it and keep his mind on the fight. Hero wins the cage match against Crack right in the heart of Crow’s territory, but as he, Blaze, and D-Mob are celebrating in their limo, a car drives alongside, and gunfire erupts from the window resulting in an accident. D-Mob and Blaze are injured, and Sticky, who participated in the attack, is revealed to have defected to Crow’s crew. Sticky, Magic, and Trejo escape into the subway with Hero in pursuit. Sticky and Magic escape on a subway, but Trejo remains behind to attempt to kill Hero, but his Uzi was empty. After a Subway Match against Trejo, where it is implied that Trejo is killed (because the player has the option to throw Trejo in the path of an oncoming subway train), Hero returns to the limo, where a wounded D-Mob orders him and Blaze to escape from the rapidly approaching police. D-Mob is arrested, and Blaze takes over in his stead, using Hero and Blaze’s friend Doc as his only reputable fighters to take all of Crow’s clubs in retaliation. During this time, Hero fights in a team tournament being held at The Chopshop, sponsored by The Source, where the winning team wins a large amount of money and a customized Cadillac Escalade. Upon entering the tournament, Hero must choose between two fighters whose respect he earned early in his career: Ice-T and O.E.. Hero chooses one of them, and upon reaching the final round, eventually fights the team of the other person not chosen and Magic, where they defeat them to win the tournament. Hero and his girlfriend drive off in the Escalade, where he drives by Magic and the other person not chosen, mocking them and giving them the finger. As Hero continues to rack up victories and chips away at Crow’s empire, Crow continually tries to get Hero to join his side, but fails (with one of the first attempts being Magic threatening Hero in a parking garage after a cage fight with Lil’ Flip, which results in the story’s only Demolition Match, which Hero winning). Finally, as a last resort, Crow resorts to kidnapping Hero’s girlfriend and having Sticky ambushing him in his hideout, where he is struck down by Sticky with a baseball bat and is kicked in the stomach afterwards. Crow forces Hero to retake all the clubs he has earned for D-Mob’s side, one by one, an apparent betrayal that angers the rest of D-Mob’s crew. Crow warns Hero that if he tells anyone the real reason for his change of sides, his girlfriend will be killed. Hero systematically defeats every member of D-Mob’s crew with no remorse, retaking all of the clubs for Crow, and Hero is labeled as a traitor by D-Mob’s crew. Disgusted by Hero’s betrayal and that his actions have cost D-Mob’s crew control of all the clubs, Blaze sends Hero a message that he can’t let him undo what they’ve worked so hard for. So, he messages him that he has arranged a fight between him and a heavy hitter from Baltimore, Teck, at Hunt’s Point Scrapyard, in a last ditch effort to stop him from retaking all of the clubs for Crow. However, Hero defeats Teck, who proceeds to move onto the final club to retake for Crow, Club 357. Prior to the match, a distraught Blaze angrily yanks and takes D-Mob’s pendant away from Hero for his «betrayal». Hero then faces Doc, defeating him. With the last club won, Hero angrily confronts Crow, demanding him to return his girlfriend to him, having done the deed in retaking all of the clubs for him. However, Crow claims to have one final task for Hero. (After you defeat Doc, you must wait until you beat Story Mode to improve your player.) The scene is moved to an empty scrapyard, where Hero finds Blaze being brutally beaten by Magic with a baseball bat, with the final task being to finish him off. Hero refuses, and knocks out WC. Hero and Blaze then battle Crack and Magic, defeating them. After winning the fight, Hero angrily demands Magic to tell him where his girlfriend is being held. Magic tells him that she’s being held at an abandoned tire factory and that Crow never planned on letting her live. He and Blaze rush over to the place, where he confronts Sticky, who is about to set the entire building on fire. Hero engages Sticky in an Inferno Match and defeats him, leaving him to die in the burning building. After he wins the fight, he can be seen taking his girlfriend out of the burning building before it collapses. She remains unconscious as Hero tries to shake her awake (leaving her true fate undetermined), and enrages Hero enough to confront Crow. Hero and Blaze confront Crow at his headquarters, backed up by a defecting Crack and WC, whose respect they’ve earned, and the remainder of D-Mob’s crew, whom Blaze had cleared Hero’s good name with. As a rumble breaks out with Crow’s gang, Hero rushes to face Crow in a final showdown in his office. After a brief stand-off involving a gun, given to Hero by a repentant Magic, Hero decides that Crow is not worth killing. However, an enraged Crow attacks him with a knife hidden in his cane, stabbing him in the back. Crow’s attack proved D-Mob’s warning correct, «A beaten dog may fear you, but the second you turn your back he’s gonna strike». Hero then fights Crow in a climactic Window Match. Hero defeats Crow, where he defenestrates him through a window, sending him plummeting to his death. Blaze then arrives in the office after Crow’s death at Hero’s hand. Hero thanks Blaze for backing him up, who hands him back D-Mob’s pendant. The cops, with loud sirens, arrive on the scene, to which Blaze tells Hero to hurry and leave the area. Having cleared his reputation and overthrown Crow, Hero then takes a minute to reflect. Def Jam: Fight for NY: The TakeoverReview this gamePlease sign in or create an account before writing a review.

Busta Rhymes, Carmen Electra, Lil’ Kim, Ludacris, Method Man, Redman, Snoop Dogg You don’t often find a videogame that’s so unapologetic in its intention. Def Jam Fight For NY: The Takeover is simply about smacking stupid people in the face. Taking its cue from the rude, ignorant, macho and downright nasty world of mainstream US hip-hop, it rolls around in its own stupid crap like a grinning pig. It shags your mum and tells your mates she lays there like a sack of spuds. And if you complain about it, it’ll smash your head into a brick wall, you little bitch. It’s refreshing to play a game that makes no apologies for being so ignorant. It’s authentic and it clearly doesn’t give a flying one whether you’re offended by it or not. Just like the console versions of the series, players take part in the dirtiest fights, where anything goes and nothing is out of bounds. There’s a range of fighting disciplines, from street brawling to wresting and martial arts, and a fat sack of brutal weapons to swing at your opponent’s dome. Players can also slam each other into walls, cars, fences and other environmental objects, and if you step too close to the crowd they might fancy cracking you one on the back of the skull or getting you in a vice grip while someone else smacks the wax from your ears. Learning the basics of counter moves, throws and big ol’ punches to the face is easy enough, but Def Jam constantly swings a challenge at the player. Some fights are easy, some are downright cruel in their unfairness, but it never feels like there’s an easily discernible pattern to beating an opponent. That’s not to say you can’t figure out the best method to taking down Method Man, but anyone expecting one fighter to be the same as the next is going to be end up crippled on the floor. Def Jam is a hip-hop fighting game, but it’s not just the hardcore beats that pummel the ears. Where the game excels is in its use of sound to convey a truly brutal beatdown. The hollow thud of steel to the face, the crack of a knee in a spine, or the simple foot stomp on the back of someone’s head is so prominent you don’t need to see what’s happening on screen to realise homeboy has got bruises that’ll leave him stuttering for the rest of his life and walking with a limp. Still, it ain’t ugly in the looks department, apart from when it’s rendering the anti-heroes of rap with bleeding sockets and lumpy faces. The biggest disappointment is the lack of new features for the PSP version. Two years after the game was released on Xbox and PS2, it’s pretty shameful to not get more with the package. There’s the same dressing up toy box and customisation nonsense from before, but a few extra features would have been welcome. Reducing the story cut-scenes may have helped the loading times (which aren’t great, by the way) but I don’t really want to read a text-abuse interchange at the start of the bout. I didn’t buy a fighting game to read. What do you think I am, some sort of ‘reader’? The music selection has been reduced too, and with no new tunes don’t expect any chopped and screwed tracks or hyphy joints. EA, usually as good as Rockstar at picking up on a trend, has gone tight when it comes to new material. But what hasn’t changed still makes a great game. The Takeover is a wild and slightly insane take on fighting, with truly original characters hurling abuse and fists at each other like a scrap at a special school. Where else can you see bit-part actor Danny Trejo take on Slick Rick the Ruler, a rapper sporting an eye-patch? Or BoneCrusher, the Atlanta rocker who holds the record for the most weight lost on Celebrity Fit Club, going toe-to-toe with punk poet Henry Rollins? Compare that roster to the usual fighting game collection of kickboxers and giggling school girls and you see the genius and madness of Def Jam in all its glory. Some will sneer at Def Jam Fight For NY: The Takeover and dismiss its aggressive hip-hop, nasty fighting and obnoxious characters. I doubt anyone involved in the game would care, and nor should players interested in picking the game up. After Tekken: Dark Resurrection, it’s the best fighting game on the PSP.
