The setting is a WWI battlefield which I don’t remember Lovecraft writing about. Also, you lose sanity every time you attack a supernatural monster, as well as lose health as you cross through areas of nerve gas. So, if the baddies don’t kill you, the gas and loss of sanity certainly will.
The game mechanic/engine has issues too. it’s often hard to click right where you want to take action. Also, some clicks on the edges of the screen to trigger character actions/activities inexplicably go through to the map that’s «below» (underneath) the user interface. I send several of my characters wandering in unhelpful directions before I learned to pay attention.
Unfortunately, searching for a solid Call of Cthulhu is a bit like unicorn hunting. This game gets parts of the atmosphere right, but the parts that are lacking override the experience for me. If you are a die-hard pen and paper person, you’ll probably want to avoid this one unless you buy it at deep discount for a «what they hey» deal. … Expand

The game is set in 1915 during World War I, on the Western Front. It follows a squad of six British soldiers and investigators sent behind German lines by the MI-47, a shadowy British Intelligence agency, in order to put an end to a German plan involving dark magics to turn the tide of the war. Soon after the beginning of the mission, they begin to encounter undead abominations and unspeakable monsters.
The starting party members note this team is complete when level 4 begins are the following:
Some eventually lose their Hero Must Survive status the further you go in the campaign. They can be replaced by other generic British soldiers hired between levels.
The game is turned-based, with an action points system (each character has his own action points amount which is drained by each action; moving spends less points than fighting; when it is too low, he can’t do anything until the next turn). The map is divided in squares (each character fits in one square). Among the RPG elements, each characters has a sanity meter, which is slowly drained when meeting monsters or casting spells; running out of SAN has interesting effects (although it can be regain onf the field).
In the end of 2012, Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land received a DLC Expansion Pack named Kaul’s Diary, which is a prequel of the game during which you play as Kaul and his German cultists.

The gameplay is smooth and the graphics look really good on retina display and iPad. Playing the tutorial is a must due the complexity of the game.
The game has a sinister and brooding feel which is enhanced by the unusual music and warped sounds. The narrative is intriguing and takes you down some unexpected paths.

The game is a turn based strategy. The aim is to finish each mission and this is done by completing all of the objectives in each. To review the objectives, press the portrait image in the top-right of the screen. You also need to keep the key Investigators alive. You have between 3 and 6 Investigators in each mission. Each Investigator can move and act as many times as they like until all of their Action Points (AP) are expended. Once you have run out of Action Points for all your Investigators or have done all you wish to do in a level, press the End Turn button (bottom-right) and this begins the enemy turn.

Help information in this game can be displayed at any point by pressing the ‘?‘ button. The game also has a tutorial we strongly recommend completing (‘Basic Training’ in the front-end) and help pages in the front-end (Game Guides > Field Manual).

This is a quick guide to the game’s HUD:
A – End Turn button. B – Swap button – when two or more units are next to each other, they can exchange items using this. C – Rotate camera buttons – use these to help you navigate the 3D game-space. D – Unit portrait – Tap/click to open objectives box. E– Character Sheet – Tap/click to open full stats inc. weapons and equipment for a unit. F – Unit weapons – Upper weapon is the one equipped. Tap/click to rotate the weapon equipped. G – Unit equipment – Upper item is the one equipped. Tap/click to rotate the item equipped. H – Unit armour – removes this amount of HP damage from each attack. I – Help toggle – in any screen, this button brings up the help information. J – Speed toggle – Tap/click to speed up the game movements and animations. K – Pause menu – Tap/click to exit the game, replay from last turn or replay from last objective. If you quit a game, it is saved from the end of the last turn.

‘Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land’ is a turn-based strategy/role-playing video game based on the award winning Call of Cthulhu RPG. The game is set in the midst of World War One and pits a team of investigators and soldiers against an ancient evil, one older than humanity itself, who is using the carnage of the great war to build an undead army deep beneath the battlefields of Europe.
Call of Cthulhu was originally the title of a novella by cult American horror writer H.P. Lovecraft (1890–1937) which has, since it was published in 1928, captured the imagination of generation after generation of fans. Lovecraft’s works also inspired a best-selling, award winning role-playing game, Call of Cthulhu. It is this RPG that forms the basis for ‘Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land’!

But yeah, what makes lovecraft work interesting is the ambiance, the investigation, to know that the dude the story is about is already doomed.
Not dudes shooting at each other.
Lovecraft’s work has never been about combat. and the Call of Cthulhu rpg was more about storytelling and investigation rather than combat (it wasn’t even that good a system but the theme was so good who cares?). This seems like x-com lite with a cthulhu theme.
The Call of Cthulhu pen and paper RPG borrowed a lot from August Derleth, that’s why.
The original stories by Lovecraft were more about cosmic terror but you can find things in other stories especially Herbert West Reanimator that informed this game and the pen and paper RPG.
But if you read Derleth Mythos writing you must have noticed that all the elements about investigations, spellcasting and guns are in there.
It’s actually Derleth who came up with the term Cthulhu Mythos.

The game is a Turned-Based RPG Game. The player must guide their character through the world and follow given objectives to advance in the story. The player can obtain Action Points to enhance statistics.
Story [ ]
It is World War I, 1915. A British Secret Organisation called MI-47 calls Professor Brightmeer to go to France. In France, British Officer Captain Hill informs Brightmeer that he is tracking down a Cult. The Cult is being lead by Docktor Kraul, who is using stolen technology created by Herbert West and Arcane Mythos magic to create an army of undead, in order to wipe out humanity and replace it with a new Hybrid Species, part Human and Part Star Spawn of Cthulhu. Brightmeer and Hill fight through the Imperial German Army and the Undead Army, and eventually find Kaul in his Underground Lab. Kaul has made a machine to create Undead Soldiers for the Central Powers. Kaul powers a ritual to summon a complete Star Spawn. However, Brightmeer and Hill defeat the Star Spawn, foiling Kaul’s plot.

Power is meaningless without will and agenda (Azathoth & most other outer gods) or if they are totally locked out of our own universe (Yog-Sothoth).
Nyarlathotep has not been exiled, and is not sleeping or dreaming.
«The only Outer God to have a true personality, Nyarlathotep possesses a malign intellect and reveals a mocking contempt for his masters.» He is cruel, deceptive and manipulative.
He also appears in more Lovecraft stories than any other god. Lovecraft says he came to him in «the most realistic and horrible [nightmare] I have experienced since the age of ten».
I’m no expert in the whole mythos either, but I think either Azathoth (the insane god of nuclear reactions at the center of the universe) or Yog-Sothoth (the embodiment of the space-time continuum that dwells outside our reality).
Azathoth isn’t specifically have anything to do with nuclear reactions, it’s just described as «nuclear» by Lovecraft because the term was widely understood to mean «centermost» at that time period.
Interestingly enough, the term itself actually predates humanities discovery and understanding of an atomic nucleus.
I’d be torn between Azathoth and Nyarlathotep. I’m also surpised that Nyarlathotep was only brought up by one person so far.
Because Nyarlathotep essentially amounts to the avatar of Azathoth, there really is no competition between them in power. Nyarlathotep is what an angel is to god in Judo-Christian mythology. That said, you’re right in stating that the one major thing that makes him notable is the simple fact that he gives a ♥♥♥♥ about what happens on Earth, which is a terrifying prospect.
As for my own opinion, I’m going solidly with Azathoth.
Yog-Sothoth is far wiser, Yog-Sothoth is far cooler, and Yog-Sothoth is a billion times more interesting; but Azathoth is the absolute primordial chaos which exists at the center of everything.
Everything in this reality and everything in the next. Everything that is, everything that was, everything that will be, and everything that could have been.
Did Lovecraft himself ever even tried to write anything about power level of those gods? There is loads of poems and couple strange descriptions but I really can’t remember him ever writing «it’s stronger than it».
Actually that would have been quite far from his stories. single most powerful thing on his stories was usually maddness and what it caused.
Sure, there are stories where humans can actually see old ones but even then they don’t either remember that so well or are way too mad to understand what they saw.
Now question becomes bit different IF we add other writers here but if we go to that we might as well say: «It’s really up to you, who do you fear most?».
Tbh thats what I like most about Lovecraft. He really is only writer who can write stories which are scary (atleast for me).
Not because there is some murderer wandering around or because there is some mythological creatures walzing here and there (I really can’t understand why everyone treats King so highly) but because Lovecrafts stories tells about ordinary peoples who wants to uncover something they shouldn’t and will fall to maddness. It’s bit similar than Poe but Lovecraft took Poes stories to his own level.
Thus any debate about: «who is strongest?» is bit against True Lovecraft literature (or one might as well say: «maddness»).
Each of the units in the game has a set of stats and skills that describe how good (or bad) they are at performing various actions. The higher a stat or skill is, the better the result will tend to be. Your skills will start off pretty average but at the end of each mission you’ll have experience points (XP) to spend on improving them and so your units will get better and better. This is the character sheet for a unit (you get this by tapping/clicking on the unit’s stats in the side bar, press ‘?’ if you are not sure where this is):
Core Stats These are the core stats that describe a unit’s strengths and weaknesses. These are used to generate some of the other stats for a unit (see below). The score is between 3 and 18, with 18 being the best.
Generated Stats These are the stats generated from combinations of the core stats above.
Skills These are used in conjunction with an object, such as a weapon. You don’t just use the skill, you equip the object. A skill is between 0% and 99%. Once equipped, your skill provides the base percentage change for that object, as defined below.

In terms of sheer power, I think Azathoath (..the great thing about the Mythos is that you don’t have to care a huge amount about getting the spelling right; they’re all equally inadequate). The problem is that the insane blind Demon Sultan is just that. Insane, Blind, and Borderline Mindless. So he cannot really apply his power in the same way I can apply-say- my knowledge of history in WWI strategy games. And that’s something that almost every other major player in the mythos even down to the relatively lowly have on him.
So my best guess in terms of creatures that both have the power and can apply it, I would say Yog-Sothoh. From what we know of the critter he is not only unspeakably powerful (albeit less so than Az and maybe a few others), but also knows (such as that term can be used) a damn and can act consciously. Both of which make him far, far more dangerous on a rational level. The fact that his name served as the centerpiece of what Lovecraft wanted to name the entire mythology sums it up.
That being said, in terms of the most dangerous that would be people lower on the totem pole who are closer to being part of this reality and able to act in it. Cthulu himself is basically a high priest to the higher «Gods», and Nyar in particular deserves special mention. Because as others mentioned, he actually knows worth a damn and actually bothers with our world.
Of course, factoring in how Nyar is an avatar of Azath, and we might go all the way back full circle to Az.
Azathoth is the most powerful, and is supposed to be the one who created time and the universe. It’s supposed to not actually be an intelligent creature like Cthulhu though, it’s almost like an elemental force.
Nyarlathotep is the only one of the gods that actually notices/cares about humanity (or rather cares about torturing people/driving people insane), so it’s kind of the worst.
That would be Azathoth, since all of creation/reality, everything that was, is and will be is all a part of his dream, every little concept that has existed, such as life, death, etc do not apply to him. All other beings of the mythos even the Outer Gods are subordinate to his power and he’s not even conscious. Even stated that should he awaken that there would be worlds and gods no longer, so several unlucky lesser deities have the unenviable task of keeping him lulled to sleep because it would be in creations best interest to keep him that way. If he were to awaken then the ‘dream’ i.e. where all of us, the outer gods like Nyarlathotep and Yog, Cthulhu, etc etc and even fictional characters exist, would become his will and that is a very ‘very’ bad thing. Best case scenario we simply stop existing, worst case scenario every awful, horrific thing that you could imagine times infinity occurs forever.
p.s.: Just because he’s labelled as a ‘Blind, Idiot God’ does not mean what you think it means. He’s simply in such a place that everything is beneath his notice, also helps that he’s asleep.
Asathoth, Yog-Sttoth and Shib-Biggurath would be the trinity of top tier entities. Asathoth argueably the most powerful. He created the multiverse itself and though he is ever dreaming in eternal sedation/slumber his power is still greate. Pretty much every entity in the universe is of the agreement that it would be a very not good thing if he actually wakes up.
Yog exists outside the time and space of the multiverse in a manner akin to azathoth. but is of a lesser power scale than the great creator. YOu will notice that he is evoked by those seeking some piece of knowledge or information.
Sub-Niggurath could be said to be the embodiment of life itself. And her power is basically over liviung things, procreation and growth.
It can be summed up like this. Beings pray to Yog when they want to know something, they prey to SHub when they want to birth, create, or control some unknown creature. They pray to Azathoth when they are outright insane.
Some interesting discussion here, I always thought of the outer gods and great old ones as scaled based on their significance and the ratio of how they define the omniverse vs how much they are defined by it. Basically the more abstract they are the less defined or limited they are.
For example, Great Old ones like Cthulhu can bend and manipulate reality to their whims, but are still subject to some degree of dimension or cosmic boundaries, they are just beyond the 3rd or 4th dimension as we understand them. They are not infinite. The outer gods are beyond all universal conditions or dimensions and are boundless and infinite. The only constraints they have are those placed upon them by their nature and the nature of more significant entities. Nyarlathotep is the most well grounded of them since it wishes to interfere the most in the multiverse, but that also makes it the most constrained. Shub Niggurath is beyond most of the other outer gods because it’s own existence created almost all of them, it in turn was created from the darkness. Yog Sothoth is beyond even further because it defines the nature of existence itself, it was made from the mist, but unlike Shub who came from the dark, Yog IS the mist. The mist did not spawn Yog, it transformed into Yog. Yog is the dream itself, it is only defined by the dreamer, Azathoth, who is everything and beyond since it is more than just it’s dream and exists outside of its dream. The dark and the mist are Azathoth’s thoughts that became its dream.

You actually can choose from these two variants:
1.) Description of Yog is true and he is everything inside Mythos. This is not only the most logical and consistent approach, but also high-end one for Lovecraft deities. This give Yog all of Azathoth’s feats in creation and sustaining of Mythos «omniverse» and make him really similar to Star Maker. In this interpretation he also exist as both creator deity who created infinitude of universes and supreme archetype who contain it all as eternal and immutable deity. Everything depending on perspective lol. In this case Yog have feats and can be more or less used in debates against others top tiers in debates.
2.) Second approach is that he exist apart of Azathoth who is Yog’s «parent» and supreme being in Mythos. This lead to several inconsistencies and contradictions in lore and leave Yog basically featless being who most likely cannot even fight against beings of the similar scope and complexity.
There aren’t enough games about the First World War and even if there were several thousand released a month, I’d probably rave about the scarcity of Lovecraftian entities shambling around on my hard drive. I’d say there’s a lack of turn-based tactical games as well but this year may be the best for a long time in that regard. Still, to deliver a game of cosmic horror set in the trenches and ruins of the Great War, with squad-based combat and action points to spend…that’s just spoiling me. But can Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land make the transition from touchscreen to your screen? Here’s wot I think.
When I run out of cosmic horror on the computer, I generally delve into a cardboard box and find a green-tinged board that is capable of transporting me to the ill-fated Arkham streets or into the creaking edifice of my nightmares, the cellar floor thick with brackish water, the things that exist in the crawlspaces slithering and rasping. Recently, I’ve been able to poke at some H.P. Horrorsauce as well, with the arrival of Elder Sign: Omens on iOS, along with the squad-based tactical tentacle ‘em up, Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land.
Dark Corners of the Earth is drinking gin in a dimly lit booth, respected by the other patrons to the extent that it’s considered bad form to point out the imperfections: his habit of repeating himself, stuttering, his tendency to lose the courage of his convictions when a conversation continues for too long. Amnesia and the Penumbra brothers visit on occasion, and although it’s an extremely pleasurable displeasure to see them, lanterns aglow, shivering and glancing over their shoulders, I always reckon they’ve got other places to be. They like to drink in the miasmal atmosphere but this isn’t their true home.
There are others, biliferous and brooding, but where does The Wasted Land sit with this motley crew of mythos imbibers? The closest game I can think of, which throbs with an equally gelatinous collection of horrors and utilises similar mechanics, is Terror From the Deep, although that is mostly due to the fact that I can’t think of a single other meeting of Lovecraft and tactical combat. There’s none of the strategic game here, no randomness except in rolls for damage and accuracy, and to compare the scope and scale of the two would be akin to forcing Cthulhu and Spongebob Squarepants into a battle of subaquatic domination. The Wasted Land has a short series of missions to play through in a specific order, with no choices during the campaign except levelling up skills, buying equipment, and recruiting soldiers to fill in the gaps left by the dead.
More limiting still, that recruitment process is only available for one or two of your squad because the majority of them can’t die, or at least the game doesn’t continue if they die. There are essential characters, essential in terms of the plot and also their skills, and if they are shot down, clawed down or devoured, it’s game over and back to the beginning of the mission. This has the unenviable effect of actually reducing the sense of mortality that should be lingering around these beleaguered soldiers and investigators, making their survival a necessity rather than a desperate possibility. Being told that you’ve failed and have to go through the half hour or more of a mission again can become a frustration and is a very different proposition to the fear of loss that permeates XCOM.
Having a couple of disposable characters, still named and capable of improvement but with no significance to the story, leads to some of the game’s finest moments. Many was the time I realised the easiest way to help vital personnel to reach safety would be to leave some brave chump out in no man’s land, drawing the cultists away, soaking up their bullets and trying to take a couple of the bastards with him.
Each mini-conflict plays out on a map several screens in size, with just enough room to manoeuvre among its trenches and gas clouds to allow for basic tactical positioning. Objectives unlock one by one, which can lead to a littlee trial and error. Position yourself in what seems like the perfect formation and complete the first object and the rules may suddenly change, forcing a rethink of plans that didn’t come with fair warning.
AS for the combat, it’s mostly about staying in cover and using action points wisely, either saving them for overwatch duties or spending them to dart to the next ditch. The use of trenches obviously fits the setting but it also allows for close range firearm exchanges in which the participants’ pitiful accuracy seems justified by the landscape, rather than being a handicap for the purpose of dragging out the playtime or allowing for dramatic experience gains.
During battle, use of a skill occasionally leads to a slight increase, which encourages specialisation. However, the majority of experience is dished out after each mission, collecting into a pool rather than to each according to their achievements. It’s certainly possible to end the game with super soldiers, although the threats increase more dramatically than your squad’s strengths, and nobody goes from cackhanded to elite marksmen with the application of a few points.
No gasts will be flabbered by The Wasted Land but it’s a stern challenge with a strong set of numbers and rules governing its combat. As is often the case with this sort of turn-based skirmishing, there’s sometimes a puzzle-like precision needed to achieve victory, but in The Wasted Land there’s usually enough leeway for triumph to feel personal and well-earned, which made every minute I spent testing my mettle satisfying at the very least. And that’s in spite of the rough interface, which insists that the mouse button is clicked and then held for the majority of actions leading to the occasional mad slide around the map in an attempt to target a large man with a machine gun.
I talked with Alec, who has touched the trenches with his finger, and we’re both of the opinion that it’s a decent game. I want to add decent little game, which sounds so back-handed, but it is a little game and there’s nothing wrong with that. In fact, it’s a little game I’d like to see grow up, either through a direct sequel or through further application of the Chaosium ruleset. Some actual investigation work to go with the bayonets and bombardment would do wonders for the atmosphere and could offer alternative routes or characters. More could be done with sanity too, which as it stands is more like an extra health bar, with slight complications, rather than a unique device.
I’ll finish with a comment on the Intel AppUp store, where the game is exclusively available. I’d never heard of it before, much less used it. Beyond the mild annoyance of having yet another gateway installed on my machine, I found it painless to use and that’s really all there is to say about that.
