Unable to install Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processor
I am unable to install Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processor.
It is to be noted that virtualization is enabled.
Emulator Process for AVD was killed shown while running the code in Visual Studio while trying to install the Hypervisor Driver in Android Studio.
Error is also shown in Android Studio while installing the Hypervisor Driver:
What to do now? Thanks.

First you should try to see if you have Hyper-V enabled. In most cases, the newer computers use it for hardware acceleration but it doesn’t share with other virtualization apps, so to run this on an AMD or Intel VT-x first check if you have Hyper-V installed (go to your control panel, then in Programs and Features window, click “Turn Windows features on or off.” then look for Hyper-V and clear the checkbox then click OK.
If that doesn’t work check your BIOS permissions, you can go to advanced CPU configuration or chipset and find the «Intel Virtualization Technology», enable this option, then Save and Exit.
This method by Tamer works for me but you have to restart your computer for it to be effective.

Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processors
Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processors is a hypervisor to accelerate Android Emulator. It is made by porting KVM to Windows (Windows 7 or later, 64bit).
Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processors runs as a Windows driver. User space support for Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processors is available from Android Emulator.
Download and Install
Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processors is released through android-studio. However, only Android Studio with version 4.0 canary 5 or above can both download and install/update the driver. Otherwise, the Android Studio will only download the driver package without performing installation. In the latter case, users are required to install the driver manually.
Use an administrator command console to execute «silent_install.bat» inside the driver package. Make sure you see the desired output from the installer: STATE: 4 RUNNING
For Windows 7 users
According to Microsoft, SHA1 driver signing is deprecated (Read more here ). Version 1.8 (or above) cannot be loaded on Windows 7 by default. Please use version 1.7 instead. Users may disable driver signature enforcement in order to use version 1.8 or above.
If you would like to contribute a patch to the code base, please read these guidelines.

Looks like android-studio 3.2.1 will only download the driver.
Google
Call to WHvSetupPartition failed: ERROR_SUCCESS (Last=0xc000000d/87) (VERR_NEM_VM_CREATE_FAILED).
2.Устанавливает обновление Android Emulator. File->Settings, потом Appearance & Behavior > System Settings > Android SDK.
Тут я показал установленный пакет Эмулятор Гипервизор для AMD(в ролике видел, если не интел значит этот пакет качаем, так говорилось)

Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processor Installation failed
I am attempting to install the Android Emulator for android studio and every time i attempt it it asks to install another add on in order to install it. Immediately after it fails. I have enable virtualisation in the BIOS, i have disabled hyper-V, hypervisor platform, virtual machine and device guard. The error message is:

Some anti-virus programs have a feature that blocks some virtualization functionality to protect against malware that uses said functionality. All you need to do is disable the feature and restart your PC. For me, it was Avast that created the Problem. I hope I could help you, although this thread is a month old.
AMD (x64)/ Windows7
Android Emulator Hypervision Driver for AMD processing
Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processors installation failed. To install Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processors follow the instructions found at: https://github.com/google/android-emulator-hypervisor-driver-for-amd-processors
Intel HAXM is required to run this AVD. Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processors is not installed.
Install Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processors for better emulation performance.

Android Emulator HV for AMD.
найдите там AMD HyperVision(что то в этом роде) и включите его.

Hello! I think I’ve followed the steps you detailed and at the point where I need to run the «emulator-check.exe hyper-v» command, it’s not recognized. Where did I mess up? The «bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off» command doesn’t work either.
I have more screenshots of information on this thread:

You’re running the command from the wrong location. emulator-check.exe is located in . \Android\Sdk\emulator.
The «bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off» command doesn’t work either.
You need to run the command prompt as administrator. That’s why it’s telling you that «Access is denied.»

INTRODUCTION
First of all, I know that there are some posts out there. But there not up to date or incomplete. I want to point that my intention with this post is to make a nearly 100% working knowledge base for this issue. Serving as a step by step tutorial for fixing that problem properly.
Don’t panic, we will fix that now 🙂
CHECK-1:
Check your BIOS Settings first. Virtualization Technology needs to be enabled in BIOS. Gigabyte, Asus Rog or MSI for example call that SVM Mode («Secure Virtual Machine») other may call that as mentioned: «Virtualization»
As BIOS options are different among vendors, please refer to your system manufacturer’s manual.
CHECK-2:
Type in your Windows searchbar (Lower left corner) » Windows Features «. Make sure Hyper-V and Windows Hypervisor Platform are disabled. All Windows features enabling Hyper-V either explicitly or silently must be turned off. Restart your computer after. See the screenshots below for what you need to uncheck:
Note that in a future Studio 4.0 release, these instructions will be automatically run as part of the SDK Manager update and become obsolete.
CHECK-3:
SETUP ANDROID STUDIO
RUN THE INSTALLER
Now you downloaded the package of the driver you need to find it’s location. In the image below you see the path of your Android SDK’s.
Copy that path into your Explorer and navigate through like in image below to your silent_install.bat
Copy the complete path of your explorer and run Powershell as Administrator (how to open, explained above). In Powershell type:
Afterwards execute your installer by typing:
You will probably get an error, but that isn’t important, because the installer worked. We will see it later. The service only couldn’t start because one of our 3 CHECKS above are not done properly. Then it will look something like that:
We use this «worst case» to proof that the installer operated sucessfully even with the following errors.
[SC] DeleteService succeed. Fail of [SC] StartService error 4294967201
They may lead you to a github directory. To download a code there, but it isn’t necessary at all. It worked already. Let’s try it out.
PS: If everything went as it should it will look like that (Best case):
CREATING EMULATOR DEVICE
Let’s create an android device and test it. I made it step by step as shown in the screenshots:
After you selected a device you are finally able to download the android version of the device:
Make your unique settings:
FINAL & CONCLUSION
Now you are able to work with the android studio emulator and an AMD Processor. Congratz! 🙂 I know it was a long tutorial, but you made it trough. If you face any issues, comment below, I try to help you! That was it once again from my side. I keep this post updated.
Run Android studio emulator on AMD processor
Android newbie. My processor is AMD, not Intel, so I can’t open the emulator in Android studio.
This answer has the comment: ‘You can run the ARM (non Intel) emulator image. From your list, just choose a non Intel emulation.’ They don’t explain where this can be found. Any ideas? Thanks

Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processors
Then click Apply to download then use it for your emulator.
I am using microsoft’s Android emulator with Android Studio. I have an AMD FX8350. The ARM one in android studio is terribly slow.
The only issue is that it requires Hyper-V which is not available on windows 10 Home.
Its a really quick emulator and it is free. The best emulator I have used.
I have a Ryzen 2600X and I am able to run the emulator without problems. Here are the tweaks I made:
*NOTE: You don’t need the beta version of Android Studio or Android Emulator.
**Note: I have selected x86_64 and plain x86 images(both API 28) from the x86 Images tab and they work just fine.
***Note: Might also check for Android Licenses if errors pop up, I had an issue because of this while using Flutter, maybe it’s related to that.

ANDROID STUDIO
Android SDK.
Android:

The error code is misleading because it is a Linux one (a negative integer is interpreted as a very big unsigned value).
It means that either virtualization is not enabled in BIOS or other hypervisors are blocking (typically Hyper-V).
Can you verify 1> virtualization is enabled in BIOS; and 2> Hyper-V is NOT enabled?

I verified both and I still get the error :/ anything else I could try?

Fixed it after attempting a few things. I think what fixed it was updating Android SKD Build-Tools 30-rc4 under SDK tools, it needed an update and I didnt notice. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

The driver has no relation to Android SDK Build Tools. I do wonder why this can be the cause.

This is a very simple CPUID program I used to detect Hyper-V. You can disassemble it and see if this is safe enough for you to run (Sometime antivirus program will block). Its size is bigger than what one would expect for binaries from a few lines of codes because I choose to statically link the c runtime.

I personally have a Gigabyte motherboard (the Gigabyte GA-AB350M-Gaming 3), so I’ll showcase the places I had to find the options for these motherboard settings.
Once on this page, you should see «SVM Mode» as the fourth option from the bottom. Toggle that to «Enabled» , then move onto enabling IOMMU
Once changed, tab over to «Save & Exit» and select «Exit and save changes».
Windows Features Setup
Now that we have our BIOS (UEFI, really) configured correctly, we can enable the Windows features we need for the Android Emulator.
Once that’s run, you’ll see a «Turn Windows features on or off» window.
You’ll want to turn on the following options:
After these three settings are selected, press «OK» and allow the features to install. After your features are installed, your machine will need a reboot. Go ahead and restart your computer before proceeding to install Android Studio.
Setup Android Studio
Once you get Android Studio installed, go ahead and open the SDK Manager settings screen from the «Configure» dropdown.
Once you’ve selected it, press «Apply» to download the installer. Because the «Apply» button only downloads the installer, we’ll need to run it manually.
The hypervisor installer is located under the following subpath of that path:
If you like having this macOS-like preview pane of files, you can find it in the OneCommander application. We covered this app in our «Ultimate Windows Development Environment Guide» article
You should see the message «DeleteService SUCCESS» if everything ran as expected.
To run the emulator, you need to set up a device itself. You do this through the «AVD Manager» in the «configure» menu.
You’ll then see a list of the devices that you currently have setup. I, for example, have three different devices already setup as you can see here:
You can create a new one by pressing «Create Virtual Device» .
Upon the dialog creation, you’ll see a list of devices that you can use as a baseline for your emulator. This sets the hardware information (screen size and such). Even if you pick a device, it does not restrict the versions of Android you can use with it. I picked Pixel 2 and KitKat for my KK testing device, despite the Pixel 2 being released well after that OS release.
Once you’ve selected a device, you can pick the version of Android to run. You’ll want to select an x86 or x86_64 build of Android you’re looking for. I’ve noticed better performance from x86_64 emulators myself, so I went with an x86_64 build of Android Pie.
Afterward, you’ll want to name your emulator. I try to keep them without strings and not too long, so if I need to run the emulator manually in the CLI, I can do so with the name of the emulator easily.
I’ve had incredible success with my Ryzen powered desktop during my Android development. Not only is it cost-efficient for my usage compared to the Intel option, but it’s able to run the emulator quickly. Hopefully, this article has been able to help you set up your machine as well.

Configure hardware acceleration for the Android Emulator
The emulator runs best if it can use your machine’s hardware, such as the CPU, GPU, and modem, rather than run as pure software. This ability to use your machine’s hardware to improve performance is called hardware acceleration. The emulator can use hardware acceleration to improve your experience in two main ways: graphics acceleration, for improved screen rendering, and virtual machine (VM) acceleration, for improved execution speed. Hardware acceleration is enabled by default on most machines, but if it isn’t enabled on your machine, this page describes how you can configure graphics and virtual machine (VM) acceleration to get higher performance from the emulator.
Configure graphics acceleration
Graphics acceleration uses your computer’s hardware (typically the GPU) to make screen rendering faster. Android devices use OpenGL for Embedded Systems (OpenGL ES or GLES) for rendering both 2D and 3D graphics on the screen.
When you create an Android Virtual Device (AVD) in the AVD Manager, you can specify whether the emulator should use hardware or software to emulate the GPU of the AVD. Hardware acceleration is recommended and is typically faster. However, you might need to use software acceleration if your computer uses graphics drivers that aren’t compatible with the emulator.
By default, the emulator decides whether to use hardware or software graphics acceleration based on your computer setup. If your GPU hardware and drivers are compatible, the emulator uses the GPU. Otherwise, the emulator uses software acceleration (using your computer’s CPU) to simulate GPU processing.
If you start the emulator from the command line, you can also override the graphics acceleration setting in the AVD for that virtual device instance.
Requirements
To use graphics acceleration, your development environment must meet the following requirements:
Configure graphics acceleration in the AVD Manager
To configure graphics acceleration for an AVD, follow these steps:
Configure graphics acceleration from the command line
The value of mode can be set to one of the following options:
The following mode options are deprecated:
Enable Skia rendering for Android UI
When using images for API level 27 or higher, the emulator can render the Android UI with Skia. Skia helps the emulator render graphics more smoothly and efficiently.
To enable Skia rendering, use the following commands in adb shell:
Configuring VM acceleration
VM acceleration uses your computer’s processor to significantly improve the execution speed of the emulator. A tool called a hypervisor manages this interaction using virtualization extensions that your computer’s processor provides. This section outlines the requirements for using VM acceleration and describes how to set up VM acceleration on each operating system.
General requirements
To use VM acceleration with the emulator, your computer must meet the general requirements in this section. Your computer also needs to meet other requirements that are specific to your operating system.
Development environment requirements
To use VM acceleration, your development environment must meet the following requirements:
Virtualization extension requirements
In addition to the development environment requirements, your computer’s processor must support one of the following virtualization extensions technologies:
Most modern processors support these virtualization extensions. If you’re not sure whether your processor supports these extensions, check the specifications for your processor on the manufacturer’s site. If your processor doesn’t support one of these extensions, then you can’t use VM acceleration.
Restrictions
VM acceleration has the following restrictions:
About hypervisors
VM acceleration requires a hypervisor.
Without a hypervisor and VM acceleration, the emulator must translate the machine code from the VM block by block to conform to the architecture of the host computer. This process can be quite slow. With a hypervisor, the VM and the architecture of the host computer match, so the emulator can run code directly on the host processor using the hypervisor. This improvement drastically increases both the speed and performance of the emulator.
The hypervisor that will work best for you depends on your computer’s operating system and configuration. For more information, see one of the following sections:
Check if a hypervisor is installed
The following examples show how to use the emulator accel-check option. In each example, Sdk is the location of the Android SDK:
Configure VM acceleration on Windows
VM acceleration on Windows can use one of three hypervisors: the Intel Hardware Accelerated Execution Manager (HAXM), the Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processors or the Windows Hypervisor Platform (WHPX).
Choose a hypervisor on Windows
Use the following criteria to determine which hypervisor you should use:
Criteria | Hypervisor |
---|---|
You have an Intel processor and do not need to run Hyper-V at the same time as the Android Emulator. | Use Intel HAXM. |
You have an Intel processor and do need to run Hyper-V at the same time as the Android Emulator. | Use WHPX. |
You have an AMD processor and do not need to run Hyper-V at the same time as the Android Emulator. | Use Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processors. |
You have an AMD processor and do need to run Hyper-V at the same time as the Android Emulator. | Use WHPX. |
Double-check when disabling Hyper-V
Hyper-V must be disabled to use Intel HAXM or the Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processors. However, unchecking «Hyper-V» in Windows Features Dialog might not guarantee that Hyper-V is disabled. Quite a few features in Windows 10 will enable Hyper-V implicitly. Users may not even know Hyper-V is activated when they enable one of these features.
To our best knowledge, these includes Virtual Machine Platform, Windows Hypervisor Platform, Windows Sandbox, Core Isolation, Credential Guard. Additionally, Windows Subsystem for Linux version 2 requires Virtual Machine Platform, meaning that it implicitly requires Hyper-V. This list is not exhaustive, please notify us on our bug tracker if you find an item that should be included here.
Double-check that the features listed above are also disabled when disabling Hyper-V. Reference Microsoft documentation and the examples below to find out how each individual feature can be disabled.
Some platforms fail to immediately disable Hyper-V when it is switched off. When this occurs, there is no error returned by the Windows OS and Hyper-V appears disabled in the Windows Features Dialog. Please file a bug on Microsoft’s issue tracker when this occurs.
Configure VM acceleration using Intel HAXM on Windows
Before you can install and use Intel HAXM, your computer must meet the following requirements:
To install the Intel HAXM driver, follow these steps:
After installing Intel HAXM, confirm that the virtualization driver is operating correctly by entering the following command in a Command Prompt window:
You should see a status message that includes the following information:
You can adjust the amount of memory available to the Intel HAXM kernel extension by running the installer again.
You can uninstall Intel HAXM using either the installer or the Windows Control Panel. Before you uninstall Intel HAXM, shut down any x86 emulators that are currently running.
Configure VM acceleration using Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processors on Windows
Before you can install and use the Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processors, your computer must meet the following requirements:
The Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processors can be installed via the SDK Manager in Android Studio 4.0 Canary 5 or later, or from Github (see below). To install from the SDK Manager, follow these steps:
After installation, confirm that the driver is operating correctly by entering the following command in a Command Prompt window:
You should see a status message that includes the following information:
The following error message means either that SVM is not enabled in your BIOS or that Hyper-V is not disabled (Refer to Disable Hyper-V).
The Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processors can also be downloaded and installed from github. After unpacking the driver package, run «silent_install.bat» in a Command Prompt with Administrator privileges. Successfully completing a new installation would have the following output:
Upgrading an installation would result in the following output, which includes messages regarding the old driver’s uninstallation:
You can uninstall Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processors using the following commands in a Command Prompt with Administrator privileges.
Note: Shut down any x86 emulators before uninstalling the Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processors.
Configure VM acceleration using Windows Hypervisor Platform
Before you can enable WHPX, your computer must meet the following requirements:
To install WHPX on Windows, follow these steps:
Select Windows Hypervisor Platform
Click OK.
Once the installation has finished, restart your computer.
Configure VM acceleration on macOS
On Mac OS X v10.10 Yosemite and higher, the Android Emulator uses the built-in Hypervisor.Framework by default, and falls back to using Intel HAXM if Hypervisor.Framework fails to initialize.
To use VM acceleration on macOS when the Hypervisor.Framework is not available, you must install the Intel HAXM kernel extension.
To install the Intel HAXM kernel extension, follow these steps:
After installation finishes, confirm that the new kernel extension is operating correctly by opening a terminal window and running the following command:
You should see a status message containing the following extension name, indicating that the kernel extension is loaded:
You can adjust the amount of memory available to the Intel HAXM kernel extension by running the installer again.
You can stop using the Intel HAXM kernel extension by uninstalling it. Before you uninstall it, shut down any x86 emulators that are currently running, then run the following command in a terminal window:
Configure VM acceleration on Linux
Linux-based systems support VM acceleration through the KVM software package. Follow the instructions for installing KVM on your Linux system, and verify that KVM is enabled. For Ubuntu systems, see Ubuntu KVM Installation.
Requirements
Running KVM requires specific user permissions. Make sure that you have sufficient permissions as specified in the KVM installation instructions.
To use VM acceleration on Linux, your computer must also meet these requirements:
Check whether KVM is currently installed on Linux
The following example shows how to use the kvm-ok command.
Install the cpu-checker package:
An output of 1 or greater means that virtualization is supported. An output of 0 means that your CPU doesn’t support hardware virtualization.
Run the kvm-ok command:
Expected output: INFO: /dev/kvm exists KVM acceleration can be used
If you get the following error, it means that you can still run virtual machines. Your virtual machine will be slower without the KVM extensions. INFO: Your CPU does not support KVM extensions KVM acceleration can NOT be used
Install KVM on Linux
Use the following command to install KVM:
Cosmic (18.10) or later
Lucid (10.04) or later
Karmic (9.10) or earlier

TLDR: AMD is now supported on both Windows and Linux via WHPX and yes, Genymotion is faster as it is using x86 architecture virtualization.
From the Android docs (January 2019):
Though we recommend using HAXM on Windows, it is possible to use Windows Hypervisor Platform (WHPX) with the emulator. You should use WHPX with the emulator if you are using an AMD CPU or if you need to use Hyper-V at the same time.
To use WHPX acceleration on Windows, you must enable the Windows Hypervisor Platform option in the Turn Windows features on or off dialog box. For changes to this option to take effect, restart your computer.
Additionally, the following changes must be made in the BIOS settings:
Intel CPU: VT-x must be enabled. AMD CPU: Virtualization or SVM must be enabled.
Virtualization extension requirements
Before attempting to use acceleration, you should first determine if your CPU supports one of the following virtualization extensions technologies:
Most modern computers do. If you use an older computer and you’re not sure, consult the specifications from the manufacturer of your CPU to determine if it supports virtualization extensions. If your CPU doesn’t support one of these virtualization technologies, then you can’t use VM acceleration.
Virtualization extensions are typically enabled through your computer BIOS and are frequently turned off by default. Check the documentation for your motherboard to find out how to enable virtualization extensions.

android-emulator-hypervisor-driver-for-amd-processors’s Introduction
Reporting an Issue
You are welcome to file an issue at Issuetracker. Please remember to supply your OS information, CPU model in addition to details on the issue.
A patched QEMU can be found here at github. However, there is no support for it. Use at your own risk.
As its name suggests, Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processors is developed and tested on AMD platform. We only make our best effort in keeping Intel Processor support.

Nested virtualisation support
Hi, since this is based on KVM ( which has nested virtualisation implemented ), it would pretty much allow a Windows 10 Guest running on a KVM host to run the emulator.
I’m not sure how much work this would involve. But i sure could use it.
If this is not on the table i would love to get some pointers as to what needs to get implemented for this to work, maybe me or someone else gives it a shot.

at installation, I disable the Hyper-V (which also disable wsl2).
after installed, I turn on Virtual Machine Platform to enable docker wsl2.
My concern is how to check if the drive is working properly after I re-enable the feature.
if it is not working do I only left with the choice of the patched QEMU? or Is there any convenient way of toggling this.

OK. I just realized that you are not using Android Emulator.
Thanks for bug report. I myself only tried Ubuntu 18.04 when using gvm as a generic solution. I tried to install Windows 10 but guest hangs. Using this as a generic hypervisor is possible but I did not have much time working on that. It is not on the project plan yet.
I will still try to see if I can fix this. However, please do not set any expectation on when. 🙂

Windows 7 and Windows 10 don’t work with SeaBIOS. I have to use OVMF UEFI.
Your GVM hypervisor works better than WHPX on qemu, because I am not able to boot Windows 7 at all with WHPX.

Any special operations that can triggered the BSOD?
Boot Windows 7 VM and trigger BSOD on guest (kill csrss.exe process for example). Your host will also get a BSOD.
Taogle2018 commented Jun 8, 2020
I tried but I could not reproduce. When I triggered a crash using NotMyFault from sysinternals, the guest got a crashdump and rebooted. The host is not impacted. It is weird that the BSOD screen does not show inside the guest so it will look like a hang.
I am wondering if there is a way to share your crahdump with me?
thesword53 commented Jun 8, 2020

You need to wait a bit and the host will crash.

Nested virtualisation support #20
Comments
mickys commented Jun 15, 2020
Hi, since this is based on KVM ( which has nested virtualisation implemented ), it would pretty much allow a Windows 10 Guest running on a KVM host to run the emulator.
I’m not sure how much work this would involve. But i sure could use it.
If this is not on the table i would love to get some pointers as to what needs to get implemented for this to work, maybe me or someone else gives it a shot.
The text was updated successfully, but these errors were encountered:
Taogle2018 commented Jun 16, 2020
Running nested virtualization (my understanding) is typically the responsibility of L1 hypervisor (KVM in your case). A L2 hypervisor should work if it can already run well on bare metal.
I did run a few tests in nested. However, I did not get any work for AMD. Tested with KVM, VirtualBox and VMWare workstation.
For Intel, it is another story. I can run nested with KVM and Hyper-V. With VMWare Workstation, I can run the emulator but it got stuck at boot animation. You can set env variable GVM_ENABLE_INTEL=1 if you would like to try this on Intel.
I do not have any data but I tend to believe nested support in KVM for AMD should be good but may have a few bugs. But there is no much work here.
mickys commented Jun 16, 2020
Pardon my ignorance as i mostly work with orchestrators ( Libvirt ) and kernel drivers for AMD SEV but would love to learn more and get involved higher up in the chain.
So in my case where KVM is L1 and GVM is L2
The emulator ( qemu ) reports
I do understand there’s a big difference between a KVM linux guest where the translation happens inside the kernel in comparison to Fully virtualised guest like windows.
Taogle2018 commented Jun 16, 2020
That error message is benign. Android Emulator has its defined CPU model. For whatever reason I don’t know, the defined model requires setting this SVM but actually Android Emulator does not need it. Setting this bit is not about allowing GVM to run on top of KVM but allowing GVM to act as a L1 hypervisor.
The error message is saying «Hey, this bit [SVM] defined by your cpu model is not supported by GVM, as GVM does not support nested virtualization.»
Android Emulator does support running directly with KVM. If your host does not have a GPU, you should try «-gpu swiftshader_indirect» and «-gpu swiftshader». They are using software accelerations. The difference is that the former runs swiftshader in host while the latter inside guests.
mickys commented Jun 16, 2020
Thanks for explaining 🙂
In the end i got a lineageos VM setup on the host, with VNC and using adb remote with reverse. Seems to do the job just fine for what my students are doing.
I would definitely love to run the Google provided AVD images thou for that i suppose i need to setup the android emulator on the host then create a custom domain xml that passes the correct parameters to the «android qemu emulator» binary, then figure out the video client with acceleration support.
Thank you again for your time 🙂

I’m trying to run the android emulator on ubuntu 20.04 guest on ubuntu 20.04 host. When I launch, it warns me that it will be slow because of nested virtualization, but it’s much slower than I predicted. It takes 10 minutes to boot a x86_64 image. Is something wrong?
I tried this on my i7 11th gen notebook and as well as on my Ryzen 7 2700x with 16 cores to the VM, and in both it’s much slower than it should be.
I thought this had to do with graphics but on the Ryzen I did a GPU passtrhough and still things were slow. On the i7 I activated OpenGL virtualization acceleration through virtio and still very very slow.
Hardware acceleration for emulator performance (Hyper-V & HAXM)
This article explains how to use your computer’s hardware acceleration features to maximize Android Emulator performance.
Visual Studio makes it easier for developers to test and debug their Xamarin.Android applications by using the Android emulator in situations where an Android device is unavailable or impractical. However, the Android emulator runs too slowly if hardware acceleration is not available on the computer that runs it. You can drastically improve the performance of the Android emulator by using special x86 virtual device images in conjunction with the virtualization features of your computer.
Scenario | HAXM | WHPX | Hypervisor.Framework |
---|---|---|---|
You have an Intel Processor | X | X | X |
You have an AMD Processor | X | ||
You want to support Hyper-V | X | ||
You want to support nested Virtualization | Limited | ||
You want to use technologies like Docker | (with WSL2) | X | X |
Accelerating Android emulators on Windows
The following virtualization technologies are available for accelerating the Android emulator:
Microsoft’s Hyper-V and the Windows Hypervisor Platform (WHPX). Hyper-V is a virtualization feature of Windows that makes it possible to run virtualized computer systems on a physical host computer.
Intel’s Hardware Accelerated Execution Manager (HAXM). HAXM is a virtualization engine for computers running Intel CPUs.
For the best experience on Windows, it is recommended that you use WHPX to accelerate the Android emulator. If WHPX is not available on your computer, then HAXM can be used. The Android emulator will automatically make use of hardware acceleration if the following criteria are met:
Hardware acceleration is available and enabled on your development computer.
The emulator is running a system image created for an x86-based virtual device.
You can’t run a VM-accelerated emulator inside another VM, such as a VM hosted by VirtualBox, VMware, or Docker (unless using WSL2). You must run the Android emulator directly on your system hardware.
For information about launching and debugging with the Android emulator, see Debugging on the Android Emulator.
Accelerating with Hyper-V
Before enabling Hyper-V, read the following section to verify that your computer supports Hyper-V.
Verifying support for Hyper-V
Hyper-V runs on the Windows Hypervisor Platform. To use the Android emulator with Hyper-V, your computer must meet the following criteria to support the Windows Hypervisor Platform:
Your computer hardware must meet the following requirements:
In your computer’s BIOS, the following items must be enabled:
Your computer must be updated to Windows 10 April 2018 update (build 1803) or later. You can verify that your Windows version is up-to-date by using the following steps:
Enter About in the Windows search box.
Select About your PC in the search results.
Scroll down in the About dialog to the Windows specifications section.
Verify that the Version is at least 1803:
To verify that your computer hardware and software is compatible with Hyper-V, open a command prompt and type the following command:
If all listed Hyper-V requirements have a value of Yes, then your computer can support Hyper-V. For example:
Enabling Hyper-V acceleration
If your computer meets the above criteria, use the following steps to accelerate the Android emulator with Hyper-V:
Enter windows features in the Windows search box and select Turn Windows features on or off in the search results. In the Windows Features dialog, enable both Hyper-V and Windows Hypervisor Platform:
After making these changes, reboot your computer.
On Windows 10 October 2018 Update (RS5) and higher, you only need to enable Hyper-V, as it will use Windows Hypervisor Platform (WHPX) automatically.
Install Visual Studio 15.8 or later (this version of Visual Studio provides IDE support for running the Android emulator with Hyper-V).
Install the Android Emulator package 27.2.7 or later. To install this package, navigate to Tools > Android > Android SDK Manager in Visual Studio. Select the Tools tab and ensure that the Android emulator version is at least 27.2.7. Also ensure that the Android SDK Tools version is 26.1.1 or later:
When you create a virtual device (see Managing Virtual Devices with the Android Device Manager), be sure to select an x86-based system image. If you use an ARM-based system image, the virtual device will not be accelerated and will run slowly.
Hyper-V should now be enabled and you can run your accelerated Android emulator.
Accelerating with HAXM
If your computer does not support Hyper-V, you may use HAXM to accelerate the Android emulator. You must disable Device Guard if you want to use HAXM.
Verifying HAXM support
To determine if your hardware supports HAXM, follow the steps in Does My Processor Support Intel Virtualization Technology?. If your hardware supports HAXM, you can check to see if HAXM is already installed by using the following steps:
Open a command prompt window and enter the following command:
If your computer can support HAXM but HAXM is not installed, use the steps in the next section to install HAXM.
Installing HAXM
HAXM install packages for Windows are available from the Intel Hardware Accelerated Execution Manager GitHub releases page. Use the following steps to download and install HAXM:
From the Intel website, download the latest HAXM virtualization engine installer for Windows. The advantage of downloading the HAXM installer directly from the Intel website is that you can be assured of using the latest version.
Run haxm-N.N.N-setup.exe (where N.N.N is the version number) to start the HAXM installer. Accept the default values in the installer dialogs:
When you create a virtual device (see Managing Virtual Devices with the Android Device Manager), be sure to select an x86-based system image. If you use an ARM-based system image, the virtual device will not be accelerated and will run slowly.
Troubleshooting
For help with troubleshooting hardware acceleration issues, see the Android emulator Troubleshooting guide.
Accelerating Android emulators on macOS
The following virtualization technologies are available for accelerating the Android emulator:
Apple’s Hypervisor Framework. Hypervisor is a feature of macOS 10.10 and later that makes it possible to run virtual machines on a Mac.
Intel’s Hardware Accelerated Execution Manager (HAXM). HAXM is a virtualization engine for computers running Intel CPUs.
It is recommended that you use the Hypervisor Framework to accelerate the Android emulator. If the Hypervisor Framework is not available on your Mac, then HAXM can be used. The Android emulator will automatically make use of hardware acceleration if the following criteria are met:
Hardware acceleration is available and enabled on the development computer.
The emulator is running a system image created for an x86-based virtual device.
You can’t run a VM-accelerated emulator inside another VM, such as a VM hosted by VirtualBox, VMware, or Docker. You must run the Android emulator directly on your system hardware.
For information about launching and debugging with the Android emulator, see Debugging on the Android Emulator.
Accelerating with the Hypervisor Framework
To use the Android emulator with the Hypervisor Framework, your Mac must meet the following criteria:
Your Mac must be running macOS 10.10 or later.
Your Mac’s CPU must be able to support the Hypervisor Framework.
If your Mac meets these criteria, the Android emulator will automatically use the Hypervisor Framework for acceleration. If you are not sure if Hypervisor Framework is supported on your Mac, see the Troubleshooting guide for ways to verify that your Mac supports Hypervisor.
If the Hypervisor Framework is not supported by your Mac, you can use HAXM to accelerate the Android emulator (described next).
Accelerating with HAXM
If your Mac does not support the Hypervisor framework (or you are using a version of macOS earlier than 10.10), you can use Intel’s Hardware Accelerated Execution Manager (HAXM) to speed up the Android emulator.
Before using the Android emulator with HAXM for the first time, it’s a good idea to verify that HAXM is installed and available for the Android emulator to use.
Verifying HAXM support
You can check to see if HAXM is already installed by using the following steps:
Open a Terminal and enter the following command:
This command assumes that the Android SDK is installed at the default location of
/Library/Developer/Xamarin/android-sdk-macosx; if not, modify the above path for the location of the Android SDK on your Mac.
If HAXM is installed, the above command will return a message similar to the following result:
If HAXM is not installed, a message similar to the following output is returned:
If HAXM is not installed, use the steps in the next section to install HAXM.
Installing HAXM
HAXM installation packages for macOS are available from the Intel Hardware Accelerated Execution Manager page. Use the following steps to download and install HAXM:
From the Intel website, download the latest HAXM virtualization engine installer for macOS.
Run the HAXM installer. Accept the default values in the installer dialogs:

Just can’t get a virtual device set up
Specifically: in Android Studio when setting up a virtual device I get the warning «Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processors is not installed.»
Okay, here’s what I’ve tried:
Clicked the link «Install Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processors» and got the following:
So I go to Github. It advises 2 things:
Went through my entire BIOS, couldn’t find any mention of virtualization anywhere. I’m running an AMD Ryzen 7 2700 Eight-Core Processor if that matters.
From that page I double-check my current Features, no problem there: https://imgur.com/GaVRPj8
And under Windows Security they show a screenshot of a section called «Core Isolation». which I don’t appear to have. My page looks pretty different: https://imgur.com/0QU5sAB
As a last-ditch they advise a little CPUID utility, which I ran from a CMD window with Administrator privileges. The results are. good? I guess? https://imgur.com/LkFrLzm
Someone mentioned somewhere that Windows Update can help and hurt this so, whatever, I ran update a few times. It’s as updated as it can be. Rebooted, repeated the above. Still no dice.
Oh and no, I’m not running AVG.
Also, following up on advice from other threads:
Someone else gave a command for making sure the emulator never uses hardware acceleration but. okay that part, full disclosure, I didn’t understand the instructions.

How to solve Android Emulator Hypervisor Error: Driver for AMD Processors installation failed
Carlos Delgado
Learn how to easily solve this problem when trying to install the Android Emulator on your AMD-based computer.
I’ve been working with Android Studio for a couple of years and there’s always a new bug, error or something that happens when I start working with the same technologies over and over again. This time, the exception was related to the Android Emulator that seems to have a problem with AMD processors. I have a AMD Ryzen 9 3950X running under an Aorus x570 board.
As the problem mentions, it’s something related to the processor type, so as always with virtualization, you need to have it enabled in your BIOS. I wrote an article about how to enable virtualization on this type of board through the BIOS a year ago. Curiously, the virtualization (Secure Virtual Machine Mode) was already enabled in the BIOS and Hyper-V seemed to be disabled as well:
However, the problem with the installation of the emulator persisted. Even if you try to install the driver manually, it will fail no matter what:
After some research, I followed some possible solutions mentioned in the official repository of Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processor until one of them worked. I will share them with you in this short article.
I will list in the first step a couple of solutions that worked for some of the developers with this problem, follow only one of them at time and continue with the step #2. If the service still fails, try another solution from the step #1.
1.A. Solution #1 (this one worked for me)
Launch a new Windows PowerShell instance and run the following command as administrator:
After running the command, it will output that the instruction has been completed succesfully. Then launch a new command prompt and run the following command as administrator:
Restart the computer and proceed with the step #2.
1.B. Solution #2
The persistence of this problem indicated that Hyper-V is somehow turned. The feature checkbox in the «Turn on and off Windows features» seems to be unreliable as it may be implicitly required by other features in the computer. These possible features are:
For some users, disabling Virtual Machine Platform and Windows Hypervisor Platform did the trick:
Restart the computer and follow step #2.
2. Install Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver Manually
After using any of the possible solutions mentioned in this article and restarting the computer, launch a new command prompt in administrator mode and switch to the SDK extras directory (in the Sdk installation directory):
And start the silent installer:
If the solution that you decided to try worked succesfully, the output of the silent installed should now look something like this:
If the output still looks the same as the initially mentioned (StartService failed with Error), try with another solution and repeat the steps. It seems that the problem is caused by a previous installation of the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).
Тут я показал установленный пакет Эмулятор Гипервизор для AMD(в ролике видел, если не интел значит этот пакет качаем, так говорилось)

Android Emulator.
HAXM | WHPX | Hypervisor.Framework |
---|---|---|---|
Intel | X | X | X |
У вас процессор AMD | X | ||

Ускорение эмуляторов Android в Windows
Android:
Android Emulator.
Windows.
Android.
Android:
Android Emulator.

Same error. Recommended things like to disable Hyper-V, enable SVM in bios, etc. already applied. I have WSL enabled, but that shouldn’t be the issue

I have WSL enabled, but that shouldn’t be the issue
That might actually be the problem because WSL 2 seems to use Hyper-V (in the form of «Virtual Machine Platform»), see also #25 and the wiki:
Hyper-V must be disabled to use the Android Emulator Hypervisor Driver for AMD Processors.
[. ]
Additionally, Windows Subsystem for Linux version 2 requires Virtual Machine Platform, meaning that it implicitly requires Hyper-V.

I too have this rn. Hyper-V is already disabled

If you would like to contribute a patch to the code base, please read these guidelines.

Unable to Install Android Emulator for AMD
I have Windows 10 Pro and AMD Ryzen 5 processor. I am following the official tutorial to enable android emulator for AMD found here:
My problem lies when trying to install the emulator from the SDK tools screen on Android Studios.
I have checked for solutions here, Github and Youtube but none of the solutions resolve my problem.
Steps I have taken:
I have seen suggestions that my antivirus may be the culprit. I use AVG Free and have looked for a ‘Disable Virtualization’ option but there does not seem to be one.
Also would the fact that the folder where the Silent_Install.bat is located insists to be called «Android_Emulator_Hypervisor_Driver-2» despite there not being a «Android_Emulator_Hypervisor_Driver» folder have any effect?
Any feedback or advice that anyone can give me would be much appreciated. I spent far too long trying to fix this already and I just want to start with the Android Studio Beginners course.
Android Studio not launching Android emulator on AMD Ryzen
[AMD Ryzen 3600 CPU, Win10 Professional, MSI B450 Gaming Plus]
So, hello people. This problem is seemingly a known one but it came with a twist here. I’ll try to keep it as simple as possible:
emulator: ERROR: x86 emulation currently requires hardware acceleration! Please ensure Windows Hypervisor Platform (WHPX) is properly installed and usable. CPU acceleration status: GVM is not installed on this machine More info on configuring VM acceleration on Windows: https://developer.android.com/studio/run/emulator-acceleration#vm-windows If you are using an Intel CPU: please check that virtualization is enabled in the BIOS and that HAXM is installed and usable. Note: if Hyper-V or Credential Guard is enabled, the emulator will not work with HAXM. See https://github.com/intel/haxm/issues/105#issuecomment-470927735 for info on how to disable Credential Guard. If you are using an AMD CPU or need to run alongside Hyper-V-based apps such as Docker, we recommend using Windows Hypervisor Platform.General information on acceleration: https://developer.android.com/studio/run/emulator-acceleration.
HAXM installation failed. To install HAXM follow the instructions found at: https://software.intel.com/android/articles/installation-instructions-for-intel-hardware-accelerated-execution-manager-windows Installer log is located at C:\Users\JaySON\AppData\Local\Temp\haxm_log7.txt Installer log contents:
This computer does not support Intel Virtualization Technology (VT-x) or it is being exclusively used by Hyper-V. HAXM cannot be installed. Please ensure Hyper-V is disabled in Windows Features, or refer to the Intel HAXM documentation for more information.
Now I have no idea what to do. Some people sugggest I should turn ON Hyper-V, some suggest I should turn on Hyper-V AND the platform, some suggest I should turn both OFF, some suggest I should turn both off AND that’s only possible through various CLI commands etc. Help. ;-;

Make sure you have installed HAXM installer on your SDK Manager.
After you download it and make sure you run the setup located in:
Note: in Android Studio, the command «intelhaxm.exe» has been changed to «intelhaxm-android.exe»
Open SDK Manager and download Intel x86 Emulator Accelerator (HAXM installer) if you haven’t.
Now go to your SDK directory (C:\users\username\AppData\Local\Android\sdk, generally). In this directory, go to extras → Intel → Hardware_Accelerated_Execution_Manager and run the file named «intelhaxm-android.exe«.
In case you get an error like «Intel virtualization technology (vt,vt-x) is not enabled», go to your BIOS settings and enable hardware virtualization.
Restart Android Studio and then try to start the AVD again.
It might take a minute or 2 to show the emulator window.
If you’re running Mac, as @pedro mentions ensure you have the HAXM installer dowloaded via the Android SDK Manager.
Next install it! In finder navigate to /YOUR_SDK_PATH/extras/intel/Hardware_Accelerated_Execution_Manager/
First, you must enable Intel virtualization technology from the BIOS:
Then install intelhaxm-android.exe.
Note that if you can’t find this file in the directory, make sure you install the package from your SDK manager:
This resolves it for me:
Go to (C:\users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Android\sdk, generally).
In case you get an error like «Intel virtualization technology (vt,vt-x) is not enabled«, go to your BIOS settings and enable Hardware Virtualization.
Restart your studio
For AMD processors:
You don’t need Genymotion, just create a new Virtual Device and while selecting the system Image select the ABI as armeabi instead of the default x86 one.
I faced the same problem recently.
I installed the HAXM installer on your SDK Manager:
And then installed the latest Intel HAXM driver:
And voila. The emulator works like a charm 🙂
For AMD processors:
Go to AVD manager and create a new virtual device as an ARM system image.
So I am having this issue and it seems that unless you are on Linux you will not be able to use HAXM. [EDIT: this is if you have an AMD chip (non intel) of course as that is the issue]
As stated on the Android Site;
Many modern CPUs provide extensions for running virtual machines (VMs) more efficiently. Taking advantage of these extensions with the Android emulator requires some additional configuration of your development system, but can significantly improve the execution speed. Before attempting to use this type of acceleration, you should first determine if your development system’s CPU supports one of the following virtualization extensions technologies:
> AMD Virtualization (AMD-V, SVM) extensions (only supported for Linux)
As others have mentioned Genymotion may be a solution.

Green screen system crash every time on emulator boot on latest windows insider build
On windows 10 insider build 20206.rs_prerelease.200828-1431 starting the emulator causes a hard green screen system crash and instant reboot. The error message is «driver_overran_stack_buffer».
Hopefully this can get patched up quickly, the emulator is unusable for me now!

IRQL_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL by gvm.sys when resuming from hibernation
I put the computer to sleep with an AVD running last night. Then the computer probably went into hibernation. When I turned the computer on today, the computer showed blue screen of error after passing the POST screen. The error message was IRQL_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL and the driver was «gvm.sys». gvm.sys seems to be the file from AMD hypervisor. I installed 1.4 that came with Android Studio 3.6.1.

BSOD: gvm.sys failing when 2 emulator are opened at once
I was developing a react native app using one emulator and never encountered this issue. After I added another emulator to my AVD manager and run my app on that emulator as well, I am getting BSOD.
Any help would be appreciated.

Homony Installation with Docker and WSL2, turn Virtual Machine Platform back on after instalation
I wonder that this is possible or not. but for me, it is essential to have docker with wsl2.
https://www.facebook.com/NutchanonNinyawee/posts/3359383280841835
at installation, I disable the Hyper-V (which also disable wsl2).
after installed, I turn on Virtual Machine Platform to enable docker wsl2.
My concern is how to check if the drive is working properly after I re-enable the feature.
if it is not working do I only left with the choice of the patched QEMU? or Is there any convenient way of toggling this.
Emulator crashes after boot
Hi,
When I start an emulator, it boots, and after a few seconds process gets killed. I saw a few issues mention about avast and I don’t have it. I can provide any extra info needed.
Thanks.
blue screen always happens while running gvm on intel for a long time
Except this issue, we also encoutered the issue that the android app crashed due to tsc_adjust cpu feature. After removed tsc_adjust, the app can work correctly. But host blue screen still happens.
Do you know the reason? or have any tips?
Unable to locate ‘silent_install.bat’
Android Studio gives me an error directing me to this repo for a manual install. I have downloaded this and it is in the correct directory but I cannot locate a ‘silent_install.bat’ to install it and I also cannot see one here in the repo.
Any help would be appreciated
does «Timed out after 300seconds» issue relate to this driver?
I tried many virtual device settings but all comes to the same ending: device wont start.
qemu uses about 25% CPU during all that time but but there is nothing coming up. Then it simply says it fails to start after 300s.
So, is this a virtualization problem caused by this driver? or else where do you think should I go then?
below are my system values.
emulator-check.exe gives following results. It also says «Warning: Quick Boot / Snapshots not supported on this machine. A CPU with EPT + UG features is currently needed. We will address this in a future release.» but I take it using Cold Boot should work.
Error during installation with silent_install.bat
When I launch in Admin mode the bat file an error occured:
Can not be used in conjunction with VirtualBox
When starting the Android Emulator. I noticed my VirtualBox crashing. The virtual machines get into a «Guru meditation» state. The cause seems to be that the Android Emulator is locking the AMD hypervisor at which point VirtualBox has no access anymore. The following line appears in the VirtualBox virtual machine logs.

Is this cpu supported, can support be added if not? How to run android virtual device with this?

WARNING: Host CPU is missing the following feature(s) required for x86 emulation: SSSE3
I’m really confused about the SSSE3 warning because I’m running Windows and, according to the user guide Run apps on the Android Emulator, SSSE3 is only required for Linux users:
The use of hardware acceleration has additional requirements on Windows and Linux:
I followed the directions in the user guide Configure hardware acceleration for the Android Emulator and made sure my PC met all the requirements stated there as well:
So, is SSSE3 required for Windows users after all? Is the user guide just incorrect or am I missing something? 🤔 This is getting really frustrating. 😞
Please help me get the emulator up and running. Thank you!
PC Configuration:
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1090t (which has SVM but not SSSE3)
OS: Windows 10 Education 64-bit, version 1909

I have uninstalled Hyper-V and SVM mode is activated in my BIOS.

No «gvm» Service after Android Emulator Hypervisor for AMD Processor installation
I’m desperately trying to install the Android Emulator Hypervisor for AMD Processor but something seems to fail, as the command sc query gvm tells me there is no such service.
I think I have disabled all the Hpyer-V Windows features. I’ve also seen this article https://github.com/google/android-emulator-hypervisor-driver-for-amd-processors/wiki/Is-Hyper-V-really-disabled%3F from which I got the cpuid tool. The Output is:
