Яркий и искренний: новый EP Yungblud — Hope For The Underrated Youth

В середине октября новая надежда рок-музыки и поп-панка Доминик Харрисон представил новый мини-альбом Yungblud — Hope For The Underrated Youth. Название альбом получил по одной из песен, релиз которой состоялся несколько ранее в этом году. Сама пластинка состоит из 6 треков, каждый из которых имеет собственное звучание, музыкальную стилистику и идею. Одна из песен — Original me — это совместный проект Доминика с фронтменом группы Imagine Dragons Дэном Рейнольдсом (и да, на нее совсем недавно был снят очень классный и стильный клип).

Пару лет назад Yungblud появился как что-то вроде рок-звезды 21 века. Как очень точно написал он нем журнал NME: «Он болтливый, он гиперактивный, он откровенный, он бесстрашный, он чувствует себя сексуально в платье, и он — новая порода рок-звезды». 22-летний парень из Донкастера очень быстро собрал огромное количество фолловеров в социальный сетях и стал практически голосом поколения Z, покорив армию поклонников (которых он называет «Клуб черных сердец») своей позицией «без всякой ерунды», своей искренностью, непосредственностью, яркостью, способностью открыто говорить о проблемах своего времени и своего поколения. В своем творчестве ему удается весьма органично сочетать и политичность, и обращение к социальным стереотипам и проблемам молодого поколения, и личные истории и переживания, и сильные эмоции, и протестность… И всё это завёрнуто в неординарный микс из рока и поп-панка с легкими вкраплениями инди-рока, электроники и хип-хопа, замешанный на харизматичном, ярком вокале Доминика, его непосредственном поведении и самовыражении. Как он сам о себе сказал в интервью NME: «Если бы я хотел быть нормальным и всем нравиться, я бы пошел работать в булочную». И эта многогранность находит своё отражение в новом альбоме, про который Харрисон заметил: «В этом проекте я рассказал те истории, которые слышал, о тех людях, которых встретил по всему миру, и описал те путешествия, которые совершил сам в моей голове. Все вы помогли мне рассказать эту историю, и я не могу дождаться, когда вы услышите её». Описывая смысловой посыл пластинки, Доминик сравнил её со “своеобразным опытом доверия”. «Знаете, когда вы падаете назад, а кто-то вас ловит. Я хотел, чтобы люди ощутили чувство принадлежности, как будто кто-то прикрывает их спину».

В музыкальном отношении альбом, несмотря на свой небольшой формат, получился весьма разноплановым, каждая песня непохожа на другие, каждая имеет свою музыкальную стилистику и отражает разные стороны таланта Доминика Харрисона. Так, первый трек пластинки — Braindead! — воспринимается как слегка припанкованный, энергичный инди-рок, трек — Рarents — это органичное сочетание хип-хопа и поп-панка, также, как и песня Original me, получившая ещё и элементы электроник-рока и ставшая абсолютно потрясающим гибридом оригинального звучания Yungblud и Imagine Dragons. В альбоме есть три баллады, но тоже совершенно разные: так Casual sabotage — это сильная, эмоциональная, глубоко-звучащая электронно-роковая песня. Собственно, Hope For The Underrated Youth — уже практически классическая, очень яркая и полнотелая рок-баллада с небольшими, но очень органичными включениями хип-хопа, которая так и слышится исполняемой на огромной концертной площадке, когда весь зал подпевает припеву. А заключительная Waiting on the weekend — совсем другая, акустическая, очень спокойная, личная и даже нежная история.

С точки зрения лирики альбом тоже многоплановый, касающийся как социальных, так и личных проблем. В отношении текстов своих песен Харрисон совершенно не выглядит поверхностным, или несерьезным, или поющим о чем-то мелком или развлекательном. Каждый трек является отражением взгляда его и его поколения на неоправданную ненависть, жестокость и ложь в современно обществе, на отношения детей и родителей, на психические заболевания и личное неблагополучие, на проблему поколений и неверие взрослого мира в молодых, на личные отношения, открытость и стремление быть тем, кто ты есть. Идей так много, что даже удивительно, как все они могли найти такое яркое и полноценное отражение в мини-альбоме.

В итоге можно с уверенностью сказать, что на сегодняшний день альбом Hope For The Underrated Youth — это самое сильное и глубокое творение Yungblud. Доминику Харрисону удалось создать проект, который похож на разговор между двумя друзьями, сражающимися за своё психологическое благополучие и свой путь в этом мрачном и негостеприимном мире.

Британский музыкант Yungblud анонсировал мини-альбом. Как сообщает Rock Sound, пластинка «Underrated Youth» из шести песен увидит свет 11 октября 2019 года. В EP, помимо сольных композиций, войдет дуэт с фронтменом Imagine Dragons Дэном Рейнольдсом.

На один из синглов с альбома — «Hope For The Underrated Youth» —Yungblud выпустил клип. В ролике молодежь живет в охраняемом полуразрушенном гетто. Двое героев пробуют сбежать, но попытка оборачивается провалом и массовым расстрелом.

Подкаст «Нового Радио» о звёздах и их жизни называется «НеДудь». Вот уж точно: ведущий Никита Никитин, мягко говоря, не Дудь, хотя некоторое количество острых вопросов задать всё же попытался. Вот только объект был выбран неподходящий: скромная и улыбчивая Юлия Савичева искренне недоумевала, зачем ведущий пытается копаться в грязном белье, сохраняя при этом абсолютно позитивный настрой. Если воспринимать это интервью как поединок, то гостья победила за явным преимуществом. И, между прочим, Юлия Станиславовна правильно употребляет глагол «надеть».

Савичева с очаровательной улыбкой рассказала, что на самом деле является жёстким руководителем и не терпит проявлений непрофессионализма у своих музыкантов. По её мнению, в шоу-бизнесе за двадцать лет очень многое изменилось, но роль продюсеров осталась важной: правда, теперь они чаще предпочитают оставаться за кадром. При этом Юлия прекрасно чувствует себя в статусе «сама себе продюсер»: поначалу было непросто, однако вариант возвращения под продюсерское крыло Максима Фадеева она даже не рассматривает. По словам певицы, ей приходится продвигать себя и в интернете, и на радио и телевидении, при этом у неё никогда не просили денег за ротацию песен.

«Hope For the Underrated Youth» (stylised in lowercase), released 29 July 2019, is the fifth song on YUNGBLUD’s third EP the underrated youth and the seventeenth song on the Japanese version of the second studio album weird! , as well as the EP’s second single.

Background

Leading up to the release of the song, he announced on 25 July that he had a «surprise» in London on a boat at the River Thames, and linked fans to a website to sign up to be on it. [1] On 27 July, he got his fans on the boat, performed for them and then projected the words «There’s Hope For the Underrated Youth» (stylised in upper case) onto the side of Houses of Parliament, which he later shared an image of on his social media. He announced on 28 July 2019 that the song would premiere the next day, on BBC Radio 1 during Annie Mac’s Future Sounds as Annie Mac’s Hottest Record in the World. [2] [3] On 24 September 2019, the official music video, directed by Andrew Sandler, premiered on his YouTube channel.

On Twitter, he stated the song is about freedom and hope for the youth. [4] In a press statement, he said: «It’s the first song that’s not been about me and my own experiences, it is partly but it’s about the people I’ve met and the things I hear. Every day, like, you wake up in a world that tries to put you, in a lane, it kinda tells you what to think, how to dress, how to look, how to think. The common denominator in the peple (sic) I meet, especially young people, is the constant optimism and fire and sense of equality that we want to achieve in the world and in the future, you know, and that’s what this song is about. This song is for us, sinners. The people that look at us for wanting to blur the lines of old division. This song is about the future being bright because we’re in it.» [5] He later stated in a game of Fan vs Artist with a fan that he wrote the song in Halloween 2018, however the video has since been made private. [6] [7]

Премьера нового сингла YUNGBLUD – Hope For The Underrated Youth состоялась 29 июня и оставила поклонников в томительном ожидании нового альбома. На это есть целых три причины: 11 Minutes, Parents и Loner. Теперь есть четвертая, о которой говорим сегодня.

Двадцатиоднолетний артист выпустил свой дебютный альбом 21st Century Liability год назад. Критикам понравился его надрывистый голос и хаотичный стиль, а малолетние поклонницы обеспечили неплохие продажи. Затем был роман с Холзи и совместный сингл 11 Minutes, после которого о Доминике Харрисоне заговорили даже крупные издания. В 2019 он выпустил уже четвертый трек, и это явный намек на энергичное продолжение дискографии и, вероятно, высокие места в чартах.

Сингл Parent призывал отпрысков самостоятельно принимать решения и уйти от опеки старшего поколения, кем бы они не являлись. Hope For The Underrated Youth — это альтернативный рок-гимн, посвященный свободе слова и самовыражения. Music Video and Lyrics Meaning

Dominic Harrison, or better known as Yungblud, has just released the official music video for “Hope For The Underrated Youth”, a song from his coming EP Underrated Youth, which will be released on the 11th of October.

Yungblud talked a bit about the EP saying:

i wanted this project to amplify a world consumed with unjustified hate where the common denominator of the people i have met is the constant fight, hope, unity, desire for equality and intelligence embedded inside our heads.

When it was first released over a month ago, I thought that the song itself was emotional enough, but the music video just delivered the message so perfectly, which made it even more emotional and touching.

Yungblud had this to say about the song on Twitter:

this song is about freedom of speech. this song is about freedom of expression. there is hope for this “underrated youth” and i believe the future looks bright because we are in it.

Music Video Meaning

We see Dom and a lot of young adults and teens; they’re just living their life, all looks okay; but one of them shows that he has a gun hidden in his jeans to one of his friends, which seems like a bad thing because his friend tells him to hide it back; these two guys go to an empty space and start shooting glass bottles with the gun; and Dom hears them and rushes to them starting a little fight, saying that this is wrong, he even takes the gun out of the boy’s hand and throw it away on the ground.

In the next scene, we see Dom and what appears to be his girlfriend in the music video; they’re sitting there chilling, he’s listening to music, then they just talk and chat about stuff; when all of a sudden, Dom hears a gunshot again; but this time he sees older men wearing like “forces uniform”;’ they’re holding like semi auto shotguns and rifles; and they are moving between the long grass, running towards the youngsters; so Dom and the girl ran to alert the other guys and they all look afraid and distressed.
The police or the older men get to the kids and point the guns to them; while the kids are holding their hands up and shouting that it’s okay, they’re peaceful and nothing should be a problem; except that the guy with the gun earlier, starts reaching out for his small gun; and because of that move, all hell breaks loose, the men in the uniform open fire on all of the kids; but Dom and few friends get behind cars to take shelter; he tried to calm his girlfriend down, then took a white flag, which is a sign of surrender and peace; but even then, the men shot him a few times… The End.

Yeah, so sad and sadly accurate for what goes on in the world nowadays; sometimes it only takes one man’s mistake to have the whole group punished; and of course this music video is a great representation on gun laws, and gun violence in the US; and I think it’s safe to say that a lot of the youth are not for the current gun laws; they unfortunately go through situations that can be prevented with better gun laws and whatnot. Anyway, let’s jump into the lyrics, so we can get a deeper look into the song and the message that Yungblud has.

Verse One

If I left today
Would you wait for me or would you throw us all away?
Like the magazines say

So here he’s talking to the older generation; he’s asking if they care enough for him that they’ll wait; and not discard his, the teens, and the young adults’ opinions.

Should I go right away?
Cut all of my hair off, and change my second name?
From a juvenile state

He is asking if he should get a haircut and if he should change his second name, or if he should change his appearance to look older; maybe only then the older generations would take him seriously; maybe he will finally have a voice, and the elders will hear what he has to say; and that of course is not only applicable to him personally, but it’s more about the battle between different generations; most of Gen X doesn’t take millennials and Gen Z seriously, nor do they care about their future; so maybe changing his name “from a juvenile state” would change things for him.

Dom is basically asking the older generations, parents, teachers, and people in authority, to “take his heart out”; he wants them to try and know what he really feels and believes in; he wishes that they can reach out; because our generation usually feels alone, like no one understand us; and to him it is “better late than never”; he’s wishing for this to happen, because he’s still hiding all of his true feelings and all of the struggles he goes through.

Chorus

‘Cause there’s hope for the underrated youth

This line is basically what the whole song is about; maybe even what Yungblud is about; he believes in the kids, teens, and young adults, the ones who are going to shape the future. He is saying that there is hope for us; and that we are underrated; because our generation has internet, technology, international friends and relationships, and amount of resources and information that no other generation before us had; we are underrated because we’re growing up faster and smarter; we’re skeptical, scientific, and creative.

And I’m so far from telling you the truth
‘Cause you keep on pulling me down, pulling me down, pulling me down
Yeah there’s hope for the underrated youth

Again, with the “no one understands me” theme; which is a real thing that happens usually because parents or elders don’t believe the young kids; they usually don’t think that their feelings or struggles are as real or as big of a deal, so they “pull them down” with the neglecting comments; which leads to more hiding and more separation between the generations.

Verse Two

Every day is an episode
I pick and mix with self-control
My head won’t let me go like if I died you’d never know

It’s an interesting use of the word episode; because in psychiatry, an episode is a chunk of one’s life; which could be short like hours, or long like weeks, or months; and usually it’s a time when the person is affected be a mental health problem that they have, like bipolar disorder for example. So maybe he meant that because a lot of our generation are suffering from depressive episodes, manic episodes, or something like that; or he simply means that life and history has been repeating itself a lot, and everyday just feels like the day before; there is no real change happening in the world. The phrase “my head won’t let me go” is so relatable to a lot of people who suffer from ADHD, ADD, OCD, Bipolar disorder depression, anxiety disorder, borderline personality disorder, and a lot more mental illnesses; it’s that feeling you get when you’re in your head, thinking a lot of feeling trapped; basically, it’s not a nice feeling, you know?

I made friends with the dark parts that are inside of my mind
I tie them up till they come up spiking juvenile rhymes
And my eyes are about to blow
But that’s all part of this freak show

This is what a lot of new and young artists do; they try to understand themselves, and they try to get familiar with the “dark parts” in their minds; they use the pain and the stress to make art; they write about depression and anxiety, they sing about suicide; and it’s all part of their self discovery and it’s actually therapeutic, for both the songwriter and the listener; knowing that you’re not suffering alone is really nice sometimes.

My personality got fucked up by the Adderall

Dominic has been diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder); he talks about that a lot; and one of the most famous stimulant drugs prescribed for ADHD patients is Adderall; he also mentioned Ritalin which is another medication for ADHD in one of his older songs “California”. Apparently he thinks that the medications are kind of shaping him, or they have affected him; he even made a whole song about it called “Medication”

Got called an alien for bein’ myself
I ain’t got the patience to be someone else

The big identity crisis; we, as youngsters, feel and know who we are; but our families and society sometimes think that we should grow up into these molds that they have for us, that they know and believe are the “right choice”; but Yungblud says here that he doesn’t have the patience to pretend, he’s just going to be himself.

Bridge

He’s asking a metaphorical question here; and to be completely honest, almost everyone I know have asked themselves this question before, especially if they are or have suffered from depression; “If I die, would you miss me? Would you even care?”; humans want to be remembered, want to be loved, and valued. So Yungblud is asking whether that others will remember him and if they’ll cry because of his death; maybe it’s a natural death, or maybe it represents the suicidal thoughts that he or others have sometimes; either way, will others care enough? Or are they annoyed by him (or us in general), and they would gladly “bury me alive?”; they don’t care a bit, they’d even want him gone. It is a big and kind of an emotional question, because everyone wants to feel loved and important, let alone not feel rejected and unloved.

It’s a visual metaphor for how society punishes the entirety of the “underrated youth” for the mistakes of a few.

Holy shite I cried so hard, why. you gotta do this to us. Especially with the way the world is now. I really love what you did with this song and the video. I like how the message of the whole ep was sort of the white flag and saying not to judge us all on one persons mistakes. How were all not perfect but trying and those who don’t care and don’t try are being the stereotype for us all.
