It’s Easy to Use Our Preschool Phonics Printables

We want daycare providers, parents, teachers, and everyone else involved with early childhood education to have an easy time printing our phonics worksheets. This is why we created two different printing options. The first way is to download the PDF of the phonics worksheet and then print it using free software like Acrobat Reader. What is Phonics?

Phonics is knowing what letter (or letter combination) makes what sound and in what context. When a child attempts to work out an unknown word, s/he will need to be able to identify the letters’ corresponding sounds.

1) Letter-Sound Knowledge

To begin, children need to learn individual letter sounds. For vowels, that is their short sound (‘a’ as in apple, ‘e’ as in egg, ‘i’ as in insect, ‘o’ as in orange, ‘u’ as in up). For your child’s reference, print and display this Alphabet Chart.

2) Blends and Digraphs

Certain consonants blend together and recognising the sounds these make is the next step in phonics once basic letter-sound knowledge has been learnt. Head over to our blends and digraphs page for more Phonics for Kids resources.

Blends are two letters that go together to make two distinct sounds. ‘tr’ is a blend. You can hear both the ‘t’ and the ‘r’ sound. There are also three letter blends such as ‘str’ and again, all three sounds can be heard.

Digraphs are two letters that combine to make a different, single sound, such as ‘sh’. Neither the sound ‘s’ nor ‘h’ can be heard. Other digraphs are ‘ch’, ‘th’ (hard as in ‘that’ and soft as in ‘thumb’), ‘ph’, ‘nk’ and ‘ng’.

3) Long Vowel Patterns and Diphthongs

Long vowel patterns (or diphthongs) are two vowels joined together to form one sound. This is the next step in phonics instruction once your child has a solid understanding of blends and digraphs. Head over to long vowel pattern page for more information and Phonics for Kids resources.

Long vowel patterns– vowel can be combined to make different sounds (also known as diphthongs). In the table below, you can see the sounds that common vowel patterns make.

There are children who can read by the time that they are five years old when they are taught using Orton methods.

Older children often «catch on» and «catch up» within a few weeks, simply because they already know many of the sounds on this page.

1. Basic Phonogram Worksheets: Phonics Practice

Phonics practice helps kids remember their work. The more they practice phonics the faster they will have writing and reading fluency. Review is key.

Practice these sounds often at the beginning, yet every single word they read or write from now on will automatically offer practice. Generally, there’s no need to beleaguer the point.

Each practice session should be quick, painless and rewarding: not prizes and treats; but, Aha! I get it. 🙂

Practice the new phonic sounds at the beginning of the day, once before lunch, once after lunch and again before you’re finished with the day.

Practice each sound three times each and circle back once or twice. Then leave it. Most children appreciate the short study, and most children learn well this way.

Small Font Line Spacing?

Why do these phonics worksheets have such small lines? Give it a try. You may not ever use the giant ruled lines for your students again.

A large rule in K-3 makes it so hard for kids to be able to write smaller in third or fourth grade. They find it extra hard to make capital letters taller than the the other letters in a word.

You’ll find that it is so much easier for your kids to write smaller from the start and they can skip the transition grief in later years.

2. Printable Phonics Worksheets With Words To Practice

The first set of Phonics worksheets has 11 pages that teach the first sounds of each letter and the short vowel sounds and is great for Preschool and Kindergarten.

So many times, especially with older children, it is good to teach the sound and have them review by going to the board to think their way through the words and their sounds. Then the worksheets are an excellent review of what they have just learned.

The treasure here is that the words are already written so that there’s not so much danger of misspelling when practicing the sounds or handwriting. Watch that they think to spell though. Thinking what the sounds say will make remembering them so much easier and faster.

The rest of these worksheets have 2 to 6 pages for practicing the different multi-letter phonograms. They are in alphabetical order so that you will find the worksheets you need easily. Use them with these videos depending on the level of your children.

Hard Consonant GH Words v. Silent Consonant GH Words

Words that start with GH: ghast, gherkin, ghetto, ghost.

GH words have fallen out of mainstream vocabulary as terms like Holy Ghost are not used as often as in days past.

Silent consonant GH worksheets: Teach phonograms augh, igh, and ough.

NG is a phonogram, NK is two letters that retain their original sounds.

ED and ING endings or suffixes are guided by grammar rules for past and continuous tense verbs.

3. Phonics VIDEOS With Phonogram Sounds

The thing with phonics videos is that you can hear the sounds with the correct letters. There’s no dropping the cards, forgetting the right sound, or inadvertently teaching the wrong sound.

This being said, we all know that it can also be hard to find the time necessary to be able to dictate the repeat practice and drill that is necessary for mastery of phonic sounds.

Videos are handy for easy audio-visual reinforcement.

On these phonics videos the flash cards have the phonic sounds together with the right letters. No more saying the wrong sound with the right card! This is SO important. Also, the cards will always be right-side up. 🙂

4. Use Printable Phonics Worksheets With The Sounds: Say it. Write it. Repeat it.

4.A. Phonics Practice: Review, Review, Review

Most of our worksheets have two to four pages for extended and varied practice, so this can be way too much for little children. Assign only one page in the beginning.

Also, it’s important to help them have the habit of saying the sounds as they write the words. Some kids simply need you to do it with them and that’s often the quickest most efficient way for them to learn. Give them your time. It may save you time. Both of you. 🙂

Be encouraged to teach Phonics at any stage of learning to read or write. When there’s a reading or spelling fault, remind them of the correct way, and review the rule or the correct sounds briefly. Then move on.

Once you teach the basic phonics sounds; any spelling, vocabulary, writing, or reading comprehension worksheet becomes practice phonics worksheets as well. Practice writing the letters and words is one of the main benefits of these phonics blend worksheets.

4.B. Printable Phonics Flashcards

Use our printable phonics flashcards for teaching the Phonics sounds. These have all three lines printed (top line, mid-point, and base line) so your children can see where letters of the alphabet sit.

So many times kids do not know where the descenders descend below the base line as with the g, j, and p on the phonogram cards if there are no lines. Hopefully using the lines is helpful to you, it was a huge help to my students.

Try putting the lines on the board to see if your students «get» the base line way much better. Mine did.

I learned to read at a very young age because my mother read to me daily. I loved books. I would read my favorites over and over until I had them memorized. And honestly, that served me well until about 2nd or 3rd grade.

At that point, we started learning phonics, and I was so confused. I would get so frustrated trying to figure out the digraphs, blends, and even some letter sounds, not because I didn’t understand them, but because I already knew them. But for whatever reason, they confused me.

If your kid needs phonics help, these free printable phonics books and worksheets are very helpful teaching aids to master tough phonetic concepts, even alongside a phonics program.

The Importance of Teaching Phonics

When we started homeschooling our children and teaching them to read, I knew it was important to teach phonics and word families. They needed to know how the letters and sounds worked not only separately, but also together to make sense of the words they were reading.

Now I will be the first to admit we are not strict with our homeschooling in the early years, but we are diligent to help them learn to read. We like using simple phonics worksheets and printable books for beginning readers to help them learn and progress with phonics to improve reading skills.

Emergent readers are a great place to start for teaching phonics skills. There are different ways to teach your child phonics, but the first step is learning the alphabet letters. You can do this through hands-on play, using word searches for letters recognition, and more.

Consonant Digraph Worksheets

This is a collection of free, printable worksheets for teaching ESL students consonant digraph phonics.

Consonant Digraph Worksheets and Teaching Resources

Consonant digraphs are phonemes that are represented by two graphemes, or if you like, one sound that is represented by two consonant letters such as the SH in ship, the CH in chop, the TH in math, the NG in king, the CK in duck, and the LL in hill.

I generally teach consonant digraphs right after teaching CVC words since this allows me to review the short vowel sounds before going on to the more complicated long vowels and vowel digraphs. As such, the consonant digraph resources found here are mostly of the CVC variety where one of the consonants has been replaced by a consonant digraph.

Consonant Digraph Spelling Worksheets

These spelling sheets contain words with the consonant digraphs and short vowels. I generally introduce two or three new words every day to highlight or reinforce a particular pattern.

These cards can be used to play memory and fish while at the same time reinforcing consonant digraph patterns. The words are mostly taken from the spelling sheets above.

CVC Words Phonics Worksheets and Teaching Resources

This is a collection of free, printable worksheets for teaching ESL students CVC words.

CVC Words Worksheets and Teaching Resources

CVC words are words that follow the pattern consonant-vowel-consonant. These are considered the simplest words and the starting point of many phonics programs (after some work on initial sounds). These words highlight the short vowels such as the a in cat, the e in bed, the i in fin, the o in top, and the u in sub.

CVC Words Spelling Worksheets

These spelling sheets contain words with the CVC and short vowels. I generally introduce two or three new words every day to highlight or reinforce a particular pattern.

CVC Words Card Games

These cards can be used to play memory and fish while at the same time reinforcing short vowel and CVC patterns. The words are mostly taken from the spelling sheets above.

This is a collection of free, printable worksheets for teaching ESL students long vowel words like bike and cake.

Long Vowel Bossy E Worksheets and Teaching Resources

Long vowel words are words that have the silent E at the end such as cake, hike, note, and flute. For simplification, resources for teaching other long vowels formed without the ‘bossy E’ (such as boat) are in the vowel digraph sections. Though other arrangements are possible, the long vowel resources here are probably best taught after CVC words and consonant digraphs but before vowel digraphs. However, it is by no means essential that teachers cover the material in that order.

When treating the silent E, one common explanation that teachers use is that the E ‘bosses’ the vowel and changes it from a short to a long vowel (this of course assumes that short vowels have already been taught). Hence, the silent E is often called the ‘bossy’ E or ‘magic’ E by teachers. This is an explanation that I have used time and time again with great success.
