The promo video was directed by Vincent Haycock and featuring Woody Harrelson and Zoe Harrelson his daughter. The seven and a half minute short film accompanies ‘Song For Someone’, the third single from Songs of Innocence.​ With cinematography by Steve Annis and produced by Pete Vitale & Park Pictures, Song for Someone features Woody Harrelson as a man being released from prison after years of incarceration and also features his daughter Zoe Harrelson.

Speaking about the film Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. said, ‘Vincent Haycock’s vision and Woody and Zoe Harrelson’s performances didn’t just complement Song For Someone — they completed it. We could never have envisioned the new dimension this beautiful story would give our song, and we thank everyone involved for their part in fully bringing Song For Someone to life.’

Woody’s character only speaks a few words. It’s his face that tells the story. Just amazing acting and an equally amazing song!

This song and the lyrics «And I’m a long way from where I was, where I need to be» are very deep in me because like many, I was once at a crossroads. I have lived with no money, no food, no family, no friends, no heat, in Dublin out of all places. A U2 fan whose dream was to work for U2, but became homeless instead. imagine that. But my life began, because I have survived, and U2 helped me. Yes, I have scars from the hunger and the abuse, but U2 has healed me. I thought the light had gone out, but it never had. U2 came back to my imagination. The conversation will be next. I am ready.

First time I have watched this and absolutely blown away by Woody Harrelson. Absolutely stellar performance, sir! I’m in awe of your talent!

I really hope Woody Harrelson win an Oscar someday he really deserve one and when he did I’m gonna listen to this song for a whole day.

I spent 40 years at a job that I did to secure the future of my 4 kids. I worked 16 hour days, was called in on weekends and holidays..but I did so because of the love I had for my children. on my last day I thought of this song. I felt like a prison sentence was served. although I was free and my daughter was there to drive me home..would she ever possibly understand all I did was for her. sigh. maybe one day.

I am blown away by two things: the high quality and the thought provoking song, and the incredible acting skills of Woody.

There are very few bands in history that have consistently produced great songs for decades, but U2 are one of them.

Song for Someone

Song for Someone was the 3rd single from Songs of Innocence.

The promo video was directed by Vincent Haycock and featuring Woody Harrelson and Zoe Harrelson his daughter. The seven and a half minute short film accompanies ‘Song For Someone’, the third single from Songs of Innocence.​ With cinematography by Steve Annis and produced by Pete Vitale & Park Pictures, Song for Someone features Woody Harrelson as a man being released from prison after years of incarceration and also features his daughter Zoe Harrelson.

Speaking about the film Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. said, ‘Vincent Haycock’s vision and Woody and Zoe Harrelson’s performances didn’t just complement Song For Someone — they completed it. We could never have envisioned the new dimension this beautiful story would give our song, and we thank everyone involved for their part in fully bringing Song For Someone to life.’

«Song for Someone» — третий сингл ирландской рок-группы U2 из альбома Songs of Innocence, выпущенный 11 мая 2015 года.

О композиции

Боно посвятил «Song for Someone» своей жене, Эли: «Прежде чем я понял, что такое „обязанности“, я был молодым парнем в руках этой молодой девушки в мире, несколько враждебном к таким понятиям как „возлюбленная детства“ и „первая любовь“». Для автора само понятие «любви» — не решение, принятое в некий пиковый момент, а устойчивое состояние, уже не зависящее от чувств, чтобы проверять его. [2]

Для продвижения сингла группа выступила в шоу The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Песня исполнялась на каждом концерте тура Innocence + Experience Tour. В качестве дополнительной раскрутки сингла на отдельных концертах европейской части турне фанаты могли зайти в специальный «Experience Bus» (рус. «Автобус Ощущений» ), оборудованный шлемами виртуальной реальности, и просмотреть специальное видео «Song for Someone», в котором показано исполнение песни с «e-сцены» тура, перемежающееся кадрами с поющими фанатами. Первый видеоклип представляет собой 9-минутный фильм с участием Вуди Харрельсона и его дочери Зои. В нём освобождённый из тюрьмы встречает свою уже позврослевшую дочь. Background Information

On September 4, 2015, U2 released a single for “Song for Someone” but not in the usual traditional manner. Instead this single was released to the music streaming service Spotify in most countries. The single, could only be listened to while streaming. A download option was not available. Spotify streams in two formats, a free subscription has the track stream in 160kbps quality, while a paid subscription let users stream in 320kbps quality.

One digital store front in the Czech Republic did carry this track for sale. The site, supraphonline.cz made the tracks available in mp3 format (320kbps) and flac (uncompressed). Other digital stores in Europe did not carry the tracks, so this may have been made available in error. The version listed at this store contained the UPC of 00602547576224, which matches the UPC for the streaming single at Spotify. It was also released here on September 4, 2015.

The single contained two songs, “Song for Someone (Radio Mix)” which had previously been heard on promotional CD releases, and a second version of “Song for Someone”, this time a live version of the song, recorded on May 18, 2015 in San Jose during U2’s Innocence and Experience tour. The single was accompanied by the artwork which had also been seen on the U2.com website for the single, and used by Interscope in promotion of the song.

The version of “Song for Someone (Radio Mix)” here is slightly shorter than the version found on the promotional CD by about one second, as some silence at the start of the track has been removed. This mix for radio was mixed by The Edge, most noticeably, the entire song is mixed hotter, with more compression, for radio. Also Edge’s backing vocals are a little louder in the overall mix. This lead to Bono joking that the mix was pretty much unchanged.

Для французов, пошедших назад по старой Смоленской дороге, конечная цель родины была слишком отдалена, и ближайшая цель, та, к которой, в огромной пропорции усиливаясь в толпе, стремились все желанья и надежды, – была Смоленск. Не потому, чтобы люди знала, что в Смоленске было много провианту и свежих войск, не потому, чтобы им говорили это (напротив, высшие чины армии и сам Наполеон знали, что там мало провианта), но потому, что это одно могло им дать силу двигаться и переносить настоящие лишения. Они, и те, которые знали, и те, которые не знали, одинаково обманывая себя, как к обетованной земле, стремились к Смоленску.
Выйдя на большую дорогу, французы с поразительной энергией, с быстротою неслыханной побежали к своей выдуманной цели. Кроме этой причины общего стремления, связывавшей в одно целое толпы французов и придававшей им некоторую энергию, была еще другая причина, связывавшая их. Причина эта состояла в их количестве. Сама огромная масса их, как в физическом законе притяжения, притягивала к себе отдельные атомы людей. Они двигались своей стотысячной массой как целым государством.
Каждый человек из них желал только одного – отдаться в плен, избавиться от всех ужасов и несчастий. Но, с одной стороны, сила общего стремления к цели Смоленска увлекала каждою в одном и том же направлении; с другой стороны – нельзя было корпусу отдаться в плен роте, и, несмотря на то, что французы пользовались всяким удобным случаем для того, чтобы отделаться друг от друга и при малейшем приличном предлоге отдаваться в плен, предлоги эти не всегда случались. Самое число их и тесное, быстрое движение лишало их этой возможности и делало для русских не только трудным, но невозможным остановить это движение, на которое направлена была вся энергия массы французов. Механическое разрывание тела не могло ускорить дальше известного предела совершавшийся процесс разложения.
