5 Activities to help teach telling time

Worksheets are just one of many ways to teach telling time in an engaging way. Below, we have more activities to help you teach telling time in a way your class will remember!

1. What time is it?

Find a template for a blank watch and print off enough for your entire class. Next, make a custom time on each watch and record the time it says on a master sheet.В

In class, hand out each watch to your students and let them decorate them how they want. Then cut out the watches and tape them to your students’ wrists.В

Students then go around the class asking each other, “What time is it?”

Then they record the time on each of their classmate’s watches. At the end of class, go over the times with your students or mark them on your own.

2. The human clock game

Prepare two piles of paper, each with numbers 1-12 printed on a different sheet along with an additional two blank pieces of paper.

Next, split your class into two groups. Line each group by a pile of paper near an empty space and then give them a time and a countdown. On go, students grab a sheet of paper. If they get a number they become that number on the clock and if they get a blank sheet they become one of the clock hands.

The first group to correctly make a clock with the correct time wins the round!

3. I have [blank], who has [blank]?

For this activity, make a flashcard for each student in your class and one for yourself to begin the game. Each card will have a time written on it followed by a question that asks who has another time.В

The trick is, the question at the end of the flashcard will only give hints to the next time, but won’t specify what the time is. Students will have to think critically before reading out their card.

An example of a card is, “I have 3:34, who has 18 minutes after 6?”

4. Rock around the clock

Give students a sheet of paper with a blank digital and analog clock on it. Then play some music and have them dance around the class, similar to musical chairs.

When the music stops, students go to the nearest desk and write a random time in the digital clock. Then start playing the music again.В

When the music stops this time, students go to the nearest desk and must draw hands on the analog clock to match the time on the digital clock.В

Then erase the sheets and start over again!

5. Kinesthetic learning activity

For this activity, get a hula hoop and put sticky notes around it.ach note is labeled with a number from 1-12 to make it look like a clock.

Then get a student to hold the hula hoop and tell them a time you would like them to show you. Your student then uses their arms as the clock hands to demonstrate the time. This activity is perfect for kinesthetic learners.

Welcome to the time worksheets page at Math-Drills.com where taking your time is encouraged! On this page you will find Time math worksheets including elapsed time, telling time on analog clocks, calendars and converting time worksheets.

The calendars come in two different formats: yearly (all on one page) and monthly when you need extra space or a larger layout. The calendars are very useful in conjunction with the elapsed time worksheets with days, weeks, months, and years. Students who have difficulty visualizing a calendar may need the actual calendars to use as a reference. Telling time on analog clocks is still an important skill despite the number of digital clocks around; many people still choose the analog clock design for aesthetic purposes.

Calendars

The calendars in this section are simple everyday calendars that can easily be used in math activities such as the elapsed time worksheets (days, weeks, months, years) also on this page. Although they are on a math worksheets website, our calendars may be used for many other purposes including for personal schedules, classroom planning, holiday calendars or any other use you see fit. One simple activity that can be done on the monthly calendars is to ask students to place a bingo chip (or similar item) on specific spots on the calendar (e.g. «Place a chip on a Tuesday in March»). After students become familiar with how a calendar is laid out and works, you can create more challenging activities like finding elapsed time, discovering the number of days in each month, scheduling activities, etc.

Yearly Calendars

Yearly calendars are a great way to see an entire year on one page. Although not easy to write on all your appointments and anniversaries, they are a quick reference and can be very useful when completing math activities to familiarize students with calendars or more advanced activities with calendars.

For any other year, use the calendars that start on a specific day of the week. There are 14 possible calendars: seven for leap years and seven for non-leap years each starting on a different day of the week.

Monthly Calendars

A great number of math activities can be accomplished with monthly calendars. Familiarization activities include finding specific dates, determining which day of the week it is, marking important events on the calendar, and determining the number of days in each month, week or year. Further activities mainly include elapsed time activities where students find the number of days, weeks and/or months between two dates or find a date a certain number of months, weeks and/or days in the future or the past. Of course, these calendars can also be used as normal reference calendars by anyone.

The calendars that are included here should cover the birth years and graduation years of any student currently in school. If you need additional years, let us know.

Monthly Calendars Starting on Monday

There are many people in the world who use calendars starting on Mondays. A good argument can be made by thinking of the word, «weekend.» The end of the week or week end is Saturday and Sunday, so why would you put Sunday at the beginning of the week?

Reading Time on Analog Clocks

Reading time on analog clocks worksheets including various clock options for second hands and minute intervals.

Even though the time is displayed digitally in so many places these days—on cell phones, on computers, on microwaves—there are still quite a few analog clocks around. Besides being able to tell time on an analog clock, this is probably one of the first places that students encounter a number system other than base ten. Thanks to the Babylonians et. al. we have 60 seconds in a minute and 60 minutes in an hour. Once your students master the intricacies of the time system, they can start learning about other useful number systems like hexadecimal and binary, both of which are heavily used in computers.

Suns and moons are included with each clock to indicate the time of day. Think of the moon as midnight and the sun as noon. If the clock has a moon (midnight) on the left and a sun (noon) on the right, then the time is between midnight and noon (AM in North America). The reverse means that the time is between noon and midnight (PM in North America).

These clock worksheets include hour and minute hands, so students who are starting to learn reading time on analog clocks only have to worry about two arms. There are a variety of intervals available depending on the level of the student. The goal is to get students to be able to tell time to the minute. There are versions with twelve clocks and versions with four large clocks.

These worksheets also include second hands in various intervals. These are best to use after students have mastered reading time to the minute. The addition of a third hand challenges them more and helps them understand how many seconds are in a minute.

Students encounter 24 hour time in various places such as on plane tickets, in computer programming and in literature. These worksheets are similar to reading 12 hour clocks, but include a second set of numbers on the inside of the minute ticks.

These 24 hour clocks also include second hands, so students can read time represented on clocks to the nearest second.

Sketching time on analog clocks worksheets including various clock options for second hands and minute intervals.

So your students know how to read time? Can they represent it on a clock by sketching in the hands? This might seem easy, but clocks tend to have a small quirk in that the hands don’t always point to the exact number. For example, if it is 6:30, the hour hand will be half way between the 6 and the 7. Taking time to point this out to students will ensure they succeed on these worksheets.

Once students have mastered sketching in the hour and minute hands, it is time to add the second hands. As with the hour hand, the minute hand doesn’t always point exactly to the minute. For example, if it is 6:30:45, the minute hand will be about 3/4 of the way to the :31 mark. If they have learned this about the hour hand already, it shouldn’t be too much of a leap to get them to understand this about the minute hand.

It is a very useful skill to be able to convert between 12 and 24 hour time in a more global world. Even in places, like the U.S., where 12 hour time is used a lot, students still see time formatted in 24 hour time in an increasingly larger number of places.

Converting time units

Converting between time units worksheets are useful to test students understanding of time measurement and to give them more practice.

Elapsed Time Worksheets (Seconds, Minutes, Hours)

Elapsed time refers to the amount of time that has passed between a start time and a finish time. This can be challenging to students if they are not completely familiar with the base 60 system used for second, minutes and hours, and the fact that there are 24 hours a day sometimes split into morning and afternoon times.

Elapsed Time Worksheets (Days, Weeks, Months, Years)

Elapsed time worksheets in years, months, weeks and days.

All of the time worksheets below are based on a three column table with 10 rows. Each different version of the elapsed time table will challenge students in different ways. The worksheets that ask students to find the end date are given a start date and an elapsed time. These worksheets work well for starting at a specific point and counting up. The worksheets that ask students to find the start date, elapsed time or the end date will have random blanks in the table, so students may have to figure out the elapsed time forwards or backwards. Below you will find various challenges including elapsed time with days only, then we progressively add weeks, months, and years to the worksheets.

Please note that when finding future dates, it is important to start with the largest unit first and progress to the smaller units. For example, if the start date is February 8, 2000 and the elapsed time is 3 years, 2 months, 3 weeks and 6 days, you would add the three years first to get February 8, 2003. Next, add the months to get April 8, 2003. Finally, add the weeks and days to get May 5, 2003. You can add the weeks and days together as they are both exact lengths whereas years and months vary in size.

Children start learning about clock and time when they are very young. Some children even learn to tell time before they start school. In kindergarten or 1st grade, children usually learn to tell time to the whole hour and half hours. Then in 2nd grade, they learn to tell time to the five-minute intervals and lastly in 3rd grade, tell time to the minute.

Telling Time Activities, Games & Worksheets for ESL Students

Telling time can be a little bit tricky for English learners. First of all, there are digital as well as analog clocks, and there’s also the 24-hour time clock which can be tricky for native English speakers.

Then, your students will have to memorize things like “at night” and “in the morning.” There is no rule for why one of them uses at, but the other ones uses in.

Add into the mix things like quarter after, quarter to and half past, and it’s clear that telling time is a unit worth teach, and then reviewing, and then reviewing again!

#1: Daily Schedule Speaking Activity

Telling time and daily schedules or routines are often combined in a unit for good reason. They’re a natural fit! If you want to spice things up a little bit and break free from the normal stuff you see in most ESL/EFL textbooks, then you’ll want to consider this daily routines speaking activity to use with daily schedules.

#2: Telling Time Videos

I’m ALL about using videos in my classes for a variety of purposes. I find that they make a nice warm-up and can help students activate their prior knowledge. Or, they’re ideal for the end of a lesson when you want to do a quick review. You could even base an entire lesson plan around one as well.

Finally, maybe your students are tired of hearing you talk? I know that mine often are! You could consider showing them an instructional video that explains how to tell time, instead of you telling them. Simple, effective, and it’s a nice way to mix things up a little bit in your classes.

#4 Telling Time Activity for Kindergarten or Preschool: What Time is It Mr. Wolf?

One of the best telling time activities for kindergarten or preschool kids is What Time is it Mr. Wolf? It’s ideal because it gets young kids up out of their seats and moving around the classroom. Choose one student to be the wolf and the rest of the students stand lining up against one wall.

The students on the wall ask, “What time is it Mr. Wolf?” If he says, “Four O’clock,” the students take 4 steps towards him. At any point in time he can say, “It’s lunchtime” and then try to catch one of the students who will take his place as the wolf.

#5 Telling Time ESL: Flashcard Activities

In my opinion, one of the most under-utilized ESL teaching tools are flashcards. They can be used for a ton of activities, but in the case of telling time, here are a few ideas.

#6 Telling Time ESL Adults: Dictogloss Speaking and Listening Activity

If you’re looking for some 4-skills ESL teaching awesome, then Dictogloss should be at the top of your list. It’s ideal for helping students notice, and take note of the big ideas of something they’re listening to.

The way it works is that you prepare a reading passage in advance. In this case, you’d want to includes lots of times in it. Then, you read it slowly to the students who take notes. After that, they try to recreate what they’re heard either by writing or speaking. You can read it again if necessary, but this depends on the level of the students.

#7: Information Gap Activities

An information gap is where one person has one set of information and the other person has another set. They have to work together to build the complete picture. In terms of telling time, it works well if one student has some information related to a person’s daily schedule, while the other student has other details.

#8 Activities for Teaching Time: Concentration

If you’re teaching beginners how to tell time, then you may want to consider using this concentration memory game. The way it works is that you make a set of cards for every 4-6 students. One card has the time (7:45) while the other has it written out in English (quarter to eight, or seven forty-five). You’ll want to make 8 pairs, or 16 cards in total.

Then, in groups of 4-6, students lay the cards face down in an organized fashion. The first student chooses two of them and reveals what’s on them. If it’s a match, they keep the cards and go again. If not, they place them back in the same spot and the next student goes. It’s essentially a memory matching game.

Telling the Time Worksheets

We have created some free printable Adobe PDF format Telling The Time Worksheets to help schools and parents to teach children the important skill of telling the time from a traditional clock face with a minute hand and an hour hand. Our blank sheet (with nine clock-faces) is particularly suitable for teachers constructing a personalised ‘learning to tell the time’ lesson plan or maybe a quiz …. whether you decide to draw in the hands and challenge the pupils to write down the time, or vice versa. They’re all useful additions to time workbooks or class study packs that you may be creating.

This A4 handout simply contains 9 clockfaces without an hour hand or minute hand; the numbers are digits and not roman numerals which can be rather confusing to children taking their first steps in telling the time.

This blank sheet can be used for all skill levels from absolute beginners to more advanced. Teachers can decide exactly how much information they will provide in advance and how much the pupil is expected to provide. It’s useful for a quick ‘telling the time quiz’ too.

Children usually start learning to tell the time by familiarising themselves with simple ‘whole hour’ times or ‘o clock’ times like 1 o’clock, 2 o’clock, 3 o’clock, etc., which provides them with a valuable solid foundation in reading a clock face and understanding the significance of the position of the hour hand and the minute hand.

This free worksheet provides 9 examples of ‘whole hour’ times with plenty of space to write down the answer.

A good step forward from whole hour times is half hours, so this printable page shows the clock faces 30 minutes after those times shown on the previous sheet.

It’s possible to vary the complexity of these questions by (for example) asking children to write down the answer in a ‘digital clock’ format or in a 24hr clock format after telling them whether the time shown on the clock face is in the morning (a.m.) or in the afternoon (p.m.).

Another 15 minutes has passed since the times shown on the sheet above which gives us the opportunity to learn about ‘Quarter to’ times, ’15 minutes to’ times, or the concept of being 45 minutes past a whole hour such as “three forty five” as shown on the first clock face.

Hey! Kids, let’s take a look at the analogue clock. I bet you, it’s very simple to read and write its time. Just take a look at the two arrow pointed hands on the clock. Hope you’ll see that one is short, while the other one is long. For an easy understanding, just follow the tips below;

From the exercise in each case, read and write the correct time, we’ll simply follow the tips above.

In the second clock, the short hand is at 3, while the long hand is at 12. We will name only the hour “3” and NOT 12. So the time can be read 3 o’clock, and written 3:00.

These telling time worksheets include 12 and 24 hour time worksheets.

Teaching kids how to read the time can be a hard task, especially the 24 hour clock. The concepts are totally different but equally important. Once they can read the time on a 12-hour clock, they can move onto learning to read 24-hour time. These activities were created to help children understand the basic concepts of each 12 hour and 24-hour on both types of clocks as well. These activities will also help children understand the hour as well as minutes.

Here are some items that pair well with these activities. You will use each of these items over and over during all my printable preschool activity packs.

24 Hour Clock Worksheets

At the beginning of the telling time worksheets pack is an analogue clock that would be great printed out on white card stock and then laminated. I did the same with the hands as well before attaching them to the centre of the clock with a brad. This is a great tool for helping children learn to read the time on an analogue clock.

Also included is a digital clock. I printed this on white cardstock and laminated it as well. To go with this are three pages of time cards. I printed these cards on white cardstock and laminated them as well. To use, place the cards on the digital clock to make the correct times.

The worksheets pages include activities for o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. In these time activities, kids will read the time on an analogue clock, before writing it under the clock.

The next set of telling time worksheets include reading the time on a digital clock and then adding the hands on an analogue clock to make the correct time. These activities are also in o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to.

Lastly, there are a few activities where children will learn to change 12-hour time to 24 hour time.

Once your children have mastered these, you can move on to the elapsed time worksheets and the elapsed time cards.

Make Telling Time Easy For Kids

You’ll find a printable clock worksheet for several levels: digital, analog, and Roman numeral clocks.

Once your student can count and add well, and knows the 5 times table; telling time is easy to learn. Practice telling time with these time worksheets.

Telling time worksheets are handy for teaching little ones to count to twelve as a preschool activity. Eleven and twelve are tricky numbers to remember and the clock keeps them in linear order around the circle like a number line does, yet this «line» can be seen wherever there is a clock.

After your students have learned skip counting by five or some of their multiplication tables, especially the fives table, they are ready to learn to tell time on an analog clock. (Our logo is not on these PDF downloads.)

1. Color The Clock Worksheet

You can print and use this cut and color clock to teach your children how to move the hands to the correct places for the hours and minutes.

If you’re teaching the fives tables in multiplication, it is a great time to teach reading a clock.

Have the children color the clock and hands first.

Also, I think it’s very helpful to have an old analog clock to show how the clock works. As long as the hands still work they will «set» where you want the hour and minute hands.

Another option is to use a toy clock for this purpose. I really like the 12 hour Learning Resources Big Time Learning Clock.

Learning To Tell Time On A Clock

The best way to do it is simply to do it. Repeating the clock numbers and the fives table often will make learning to tell time much easier and even automatic, especially if you show the numbers as you move your hand around the analog clock.

Time is often easy for kids to learn, yet some have a real difficult time with the analog face and do not see the time «at a glance».

I think that practice skip counting by five around the clock is very helpful so that they can figure it if they cannot see it, at least I’ve had several times where this simple exercise lit the light bulb for students who hadn’t made the connection.

One of my brightest children had the hardest time of all our children learning to tell time, so it varies with children how easy it is to learn time.

Learning the numbers of the clock face is handy for those children who use the Orton or Spalding Phonics courses since the round letters use the clock vocabulary. They’re already half trained. C lock faced letters begin at 2 on the clock as this is the very trick that helps form the roundness of the letters.

MEASUREMENT OF TIME

Lets make time to learn TIME from these worksheets. Here are a number of worksheets to work on reading and finding time. Time worksheets are most important for elememtary kids as they would start to schedule their activity with reference to time. Most of the clocks hanging on the walls are analog. Reading time from analog clocks are quiet challenging for kids.

The below shown clocks are 12 hours and 24 hours analog clocks.

A day has 24 hours. That is exactly what a 24 hour clock reads. In a 12 hour clock, 24 hours in a day is divided into two periods. Its AM and PM. AM stands for Ante meridiem and PM stands for Post Meridiem. AM means before noon and PM is after noon. Thus 8 AM means 8′ o clock in the morning and 6 PM means 6′ o clock in the evening.

A clock has 3 hands, an hour hand, a minute hand, and a second hand.

Knowing 5 times table at this time would be very helpful for kids to read time.

Time is read from analog clocks where different time frames like hours, half hours, quarter and minutes are used. Knowing to add and subtract time accurately is greatly important.
