Using data from Top 100 DJs voters and house/techno Beatport purchases, we present the Alternative Top 100 DJs 2020
This is the third year we’ve presented the Alternative Top 100 DJs list in association with Beatport. The list is compiled by combining votes in the Top 100 DJs poll with house and techno sales data from Beatport, in order to give us a list of the top house/techno DJs in the world.
The main Top 100 DJs poll is still dominated by EDM and trance DJs, so the alternative poll gives us a chance to shine a light on the DJs playing sounds on the periphery of the global poll in recent years, despite commanding huge audiences worldwide.
The result, as we saw last year, is a vastly different chart. Last year, techno icon Carl Cox topped the list. Read below for 2020’s standings.

Who is your number one rising DJ of 2020: “Alignment. He’s an Italian guy living in Germany, he makes very fast-paced techno with very strong trance influences.”
In September 2017, Charlotte de Witte featured on the front of DJ Mag’s flagship UK magazine with the tagline “techno’s next-gen superstar”. Just three years on, she has come out on top of the Alternative Top 100 DJs poll, as well as claiming the Highest Techno and Highest Climber awards in the original Top 100 DJs poll. The Belgian techno star shot up from the No.7 spot in the Alternative Top 100 DJs to dethrone Carl Cox, who has claimed the No.1 title each year since the poll launched in 2018.
“It’s probably the strangest year to become No.1 DJ since no one has really been DJing,” she says of her win. “But yeah, it does mean a lot. It’s a big, big, big milestone.”
De Witte’s built herself up over the past five years, after first appearing under her real name on Tiga’s Turbo label in 2015. She launched her own KNTXT clubnight, which ran at Brussels institution Fuse, and this January celebrated its fifth anniversary at Kompass club in her hometown of Ghent. Last year, KNTXT became a label; so far it’s put out seven releases, including two by de Witte this year: the stripped-back ‘Return To Nowhere’ EP in June and four- track thumper ‘Rave On Time’ in September. She’s also launched a new solo stream series on YouTube that saw her play at a medieval castle in Ghent and a fortress in Montenegro.
While much of the music she has released this year was produced at the tail end of 2019, de Witte has been using the extra time during lockdown to get back in the studio too. “I have some ideas for future [techno] EPs, but also besides that I’m leaning a bit more towards other electronic music, like more ambient or just something more experimental,” she says, “because we cannot go clubbing [so] I don’t fully experience this techno vibe anymore. It’s a nice experimental phase.”
These days, de Witte’s most pressing worry is the club scene getting the financial support it needs to make it through the COVID-19 crisis. She’s appalled in particular by the labelling of the sector as ‘unviable’ by the UK government. “So many clubs are gonna go bankrupt, and these are very difficult times for all of us, not only DJs and artists but stage builders, everyone involved,” she says.
For now, she finds hope where she can. With her Alternative Top 100 DJs win, de Witte is at least heading into 2021 on a relative high. “I hope going into spring 2021, times will change,” she tells DJ Mag. “And if they do, I’m sure that it will be crazy, people will be so happy.”
What lessons should the industry learn from this crisis?
“I think that we should be given a voice, we should be heard in general. We are way too important to be neglected like this. We should really talk about the importance of nightlife and about the fact that people need a place where they can be free to express themselves. It’s incredibly important and too easily forgotten.”
What steps need to be taken to address racism in the dance music scene?
“This entire scene, and music culture, should be a place where you should be free to express yourself, to be whoever you want to be no matter what your gender, your age, your sexual preference, your race, it really shouldn’t matter, and I think that’s something that we should continuously put out there and continuously repeat to everyone. It’s a thing that should not be forgotten. And we should keep on educating ourselves, and work on establishing a better scene for everyone. It’s important to not leave anyone out, everyone’s included.”
What industry changes are you personally pushing for to make the dance music scene more inclusive?
«Well, just repeating the fact that there should be more equality and everyone should feel more included. I think it’s also important to keep an open mind and to be able to have an open conversation and discussion about how to improve our scene. I would like to underline the importance of having the possibilities to talk about how this crisis has been affecting us and our mental health. We’re all in this together. Everyone. Artists, stagehands, DJs, suppliers, managers, tourmanager, booking agents, VJs, club and festival owners. We’re all struggling. It pains me to see how people so easily jump to conclusions and start judging others on incomplete information and prejudices. There’s a serious lack of support, coming from the government but also coming from peers. Talk about it, keep your mind open and be understanding and respectful towards others or I’m afraid that the long-term mental effects of this crisis will be visible even after we’ve somehow restrained this virus.

MIXED•NEWS изучил основной рейтинг DJ Mag Top 100 DJs 2020 и альтернативный (да, есть и такой, он гораздо интереснее) и по ежегодной традиции делится наблюдениями и выводами.
2020-й — далеко не лучший год для диджеев и танцевальной индустрии. Однако рейтинги никто не отменял, и DJ Mag Top 100 DJs 2020 опубликован по плану, как это бывает каждой осенью. На результаты интересно посмотреть хотя бы из-за того факта, что гастрольная и фестивальная активность диджеев за последние месяцы стремилась к нулю, но люди со всего мира всё равно голосовали за любимых артистов. Посмотрим, сильно ли изменилась расстановка сил по сравнению с предыдущими годами, и насколько пандемия повлияла на топ.
Что касается критики, то она не нова: многие отзываются о рейтинге как о простом голосовании большой массы людей, где нет места репрезентативности. Некоторые даже призывают бойкотировать DJ Mag Top 100. Однако это по-прежнему маркетинговый инструмент, который серьезно влияет на гонорары артистов и лайнапы вечеринок и фестивалей — особенно в Китае или в Латинской Америке.

Она же удерживает самое высокое место в жанре техно. Angerfist на 36 позиции — это высшее место для хардкор-музыки. 41 место за Claptone — высшее место для хауса. Swedish House Mafia потеряли 42 позиции — крупнейшее падение в этом году.
Из новичков в топе можно отметить Rezz (57 место), Амели Ленс (59), Джейми Джонса (68), Nora En Pure (73), Mr. Pig (79), Pink Panda (82), Plastik Funk (85), Green Velvet (86), Aryue (88), Burak Yeter (89), Tungevaag (92), Deborah De Luca (93), Mike Perry (94), ANNA (95), Dimitri Vangelis & Wyman (96), Blastoyz (97), 22Bullets (98) — возможно, за этими артистами стоит следить внимательнее в ближайшем будущем. • Участников из России и Украины по-прежнему крайне мало. Это Нина Кравиц (66 место) и Miss K8 (54 место).
• В этом году 18 новичков — это довольно много.
• Армин Ван Бюрен отметил аж 20-летие постоянного нахождения в списке DJ Mag. Хорошо это или плохо, каждый для себя решит сам.
Саму церемонию провели в прямом эфире с небольшими диджей-сетами от Don Diablo, Afrojack, Nicky Romero и других завсегдатаев рейтинга, которые перемежались прямыми включениями и интервью. Нельзя сказать, что эфир оказался сверхпопулярным и привлек много зрителей, но за несколько дней его посмотрели больше 150 000 человек.
Что касается реакции в твиттере, то помимо очевидных поздравлений было много шуток на тему подсчета голосов, сравнений с выборами президента США и вопросов в стиле «кому-то еще интересен рейтинг DJ Mag?».

Авторитетный британский журнал DJ Magazine в конце каждого года публикует топ лучших диджеев мира. 2020 не был годом музыки, но мировые звёзды электронной музыки использовали время по-максимуму и выпустили кучу хитов. Кто вошёл в top-10 в 2020?
10 место — Timmy Trumpet
Наконец-то Тимми добрался до первой десятки рейтинга. Австралийский диджей, продюсер и трубач начал восхождение с 75-го места в 2016 году и с тех пор постоянно поднимался выше и выше. За это время он стал известен благодаря своим энергичным выступлениям, взрывным трекам, и, конечно, живой игре на трубе. Мало кто знает, но в 13 лет он получил премию, как лучший молодой музыкант Австралии.

9 место — Steve Aoki

8 место — Оливер Хелденс
Нидерландский диджей и музыкальный продюсер стал известен еще в 19 лет, когда песня Gecko так прокачала авторитетного DJ Tiesto, что тот подписал его на свой лейбл. Позже артист выпустил новую версию трека, но уже с известной певицей Бекки Хилл и под названием Overdrive. Песня заняла первую строчку британского чарта, а Оливер начал исполнять музыку в лучших клубах мира.
За следующие шесть лет Хелденс вырос в звезду мирового масштаба: записал кучу танцевальных песен, запустил собственный лейбл Heldeep, захватил сцены фестивалей по всему миру, а еще удвоил успех под псевдонимом HI-LO, под которым он выпускает треки в стиле техно-хаус.
В 2020 диджей выпустил трек GOAT совместно с Mesto в январе, Ting Ting Ting с кей-поп группой Itzy в марте, Details с Boy Matthews, ремикс на песню SZA и Джастина Тимберлейка в апреле, Rave Machine с легендой британской группы Happy Mondays Роветтой Сатчелл в мае, трек Zeus под псевдонимом HI-LO в июле, танцевальный хит Break This Habit с Кико Бун в августе и, наконец, Somebody с Funkin Matt и Bright Sparks в сентябре. 7 место — Afrojack
Один из самых стабильных диджеев и продюсеров Afrojack с 2011 регулярно попадает в топ-10 рейтинга DJ Magazine. Только в 2014 он выпал из первой десятки, но и тогда был близко — занял 12-е место.
Еще до пандемии исполнитель стал экспериментировать со стилем и начал выходить за рамки стандартного EDM. И это принесло свои плоды — последний раз так высоко в рейтинге он поднимался аж в 2011.
2020 стал одним из самых продуктивных в карьере диджея. В начале года он выпустил альбом Sad в сотрудничестве с талантом Chico Rose, а потом стал выкладывать новые песни чуть ли не каждый месяц. Всё началось с успешной совместки All Night с американской певицей Элли Брук. Дальше был трек «1234» с Федде Ле Грандом. Ну и настоящими танцевальными хитами стали Cloud 9 с Jeremih и Hot с SAYMYNAME.
6 место — Don Diablo
Когда он родился, врачи сказали, что он не доживет до 10. Мальчик подрос и решил построить карьеру в музыке, даже подписал контракт с лейблом в 15 лет, но несколько раз его обманом пытались лишить заработанных денег. Позже у него умер отец. Молодой исполнитель был готов всё бросить, но слова ободрения, которые он услышал от отца в последнем разговоре с ним, придавали сил. 5 место — Alok
2020 стал самым успешным годом в карьере известного диджея и продюсера: он впервые попал в десятку лучших исполнителей EDM, стал вторым по популярности диджеем в инстаграме, в честь него сделали героя в онлайн-игре Garena Free Fire и у него родился сын.
Алок Петрилло познакомился с электронной музыкой еще в детстве — его родители были диджеями. Неудивительно, что свою карьеру он начал уже в 12 лет. Чуть повзрослев, он стал играть собственные сеты в клубах Бразилии.
В 2016 Alok выпустил свою самую известную песню Hear Me Now, а потом и клип на неё. Видео посмотрели больше 350-ти миллионов раз.
4 место — Armin Van Buuren
Музыкальный продюсер и диджей Армин Ван Бюрен начал делать электронную музыку еще в 1995 году. Мировую известность артист получил после выхода собственного музыкального шоу A State of Trance в 2001, которое до сих пор слушает около 38 миллионов человек.

16. Deadmau5
Joel Zimmerman, aka Deadmau5, one of the top DJs in the world, and also he is a Musician and one of the greatest electronic music producers.

In the 1980s, Carl is the only disc jockey who performed at numerous events around the world with three-deck mixing.
In 1998, he started his record labels Intec Digital, and some of the greatest Superhit Disc Jockey tunes by Carl are “I Want You,” “Dr. Funk,” “Ohh Baby,” “Dark Alleys,” etc.
According to the current report, Carl Cox won seven times Best Techno & three times Best International, and two times Best Ibiza night Awards.
From 1996 to 2020, DJ Mag voted him in the top 100 list, and all these achievements prove that he is one of the Best DJs in the world.
14. Diplo
Thomas Wesley Pentz, aka Diplo, is a Disc Jockey, record producer, and songwriter from the United States and his genres are EDM, Dancehall, Electro House, Hip Hop, Trap.
Diplo got international exposure when he works with M.I.A and after that, he associates with many international artists like LSD, Major Lazer, Madonna, DJ Snake, Justin Bieber, Jack U, Silk City, etc.
Later, Diplo started his record label called Mad Decent and associates with many international artists like Snoop Dog, Bruno Mars, Shakira, etc.
Also, DJ Magazine voted Diplo in the list of Top 100 DJs, and Personally, as a fan of him, I think his name should be in the list of best DJs of the world in 2021.

Anton Zaslavski, widely known as Zedd, is a Singer, Song Writer, record producer, and disc jockey, and his genres and Musical style are EDM, Electro House, Hardbass, Progressive House, and Complextro.
In 2012, Zedd got his international exposure when he released his song “Clarity”(featuring Foxes), and after this, he performed and associates with great artists like Lady Gaga, Grey, Matthew Koma.
Clarity song earned him the 8th position on the Billboard Hot 100 and also won a Grammy for Best Dance Recording song at the fifty-six Grammy Awards in 2014.

Nick Van De Wall is his birth name but, people around the world know him as Afrojack, and his occupations are Record Producer, Remixer, Song Writer, and Disc Jockey.
In 2007, he founded his record label “Wall Recordings” and associates with Artists such as D-Wayne, D.O.D, Karim Mika, and others.
Afrojack earned his international success with the Song “Take over Control” featuring Eva Simons.

9. Calvin Harris
Adam Richard Wiles is his birth name, people around the world Know him as Calvin Harris, is a singer, songwriter, record producer, and Disc Jockey and he is also famous for his EDM genres.
Calvin debut studio album “I Created Disco” was a big hit and earned the top spot on the UK Singles Chart, and later, he associates with many artists such as Dizzee Rascal, Rihanna, Kylie Minogue, Ellie Goulding, etc.
