Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty (known as Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty in Europe and Australia) is a 2008 platformer video game developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 3. The game is the second installment in the Ratchet & Clank Future series. It was released on PlayStation Network in North America and Europe on August 21, 2008 [1] and on Blu-ray Disc in Europe on September 12, 2008 [2] and in Asia on September 25, 2008. [4] The game continues from where Tools of Destruction left off, where Clank was kidnapped by the Zoni, and follows Ratchet’s quest to find him. Due to its length of approximately three to four hours of playtime, it was released at a lower price point than most standard retail games. [5]

Gameplay [ ]
Ratchet uses a «Helio-Grub» in the new light/dark gameplay.
Gameplay was first shown at E3 2008. This game features more puzzle solving and platforming than previous games in the series and introduces new features, such as the ability to pick things up with the Omniwrench Millennium 12. There are also sections where Ratchet must pick up creatures called Heliogrubs in order to light up a dark area. The Omniwrench Millennium 12 also has a tether ability, which can be used to manipulate objects and move obstacles. The Combuster, Fusion Grenade, Nano Swarmers, Predator Launcher, Tornado Launcher, Shock Ravager and Alpha Disrupter make their return from Tools of Destruction.
A year after defeating Emperor Tachyon at the end of Tools of Destruction, Ratchet and his partner Talwyn Apogee learn from the IRIS Supercomputer that Captain Angstrom Darkwater, a legendary space pirate, is the only individual with knowledge of how to contact the Zoni. Traveling to his home planet of Merdegraw in the Drogol Sector, the duo slip aboard a pirate fleet above the Azorean Sea, but are soon discovered and captured by Sprocket, Darkwater’s first mate, who reveals that Darkwater has been dead for years. Seconds before the two are to be executed, Rusty Pete shows up disguised as Captain Romulus Slag (who Ratchet defeated in Tools of Destruction) and instead orders them to be marooned on Hoolefar Island.
After experiencing a brief vision of Clank surrounded by glowing energy, Ratchet reunites with Talwyn and meets the local leader, Mayor Barnabas Worley. He dispatches Ratchet to restore the island’s power supply by restarting several wind turbines and then directs him to the town’s radio operator, who asks Ratchet to purchase a Versabolt from the Smuggler so he can make badly needed repairs. As a reward for providing assistance, Worley reveals the existence of the Obsidian Eye, a powerful lorentzian telescope Darkwater built to maintain a link to the Zoni’s home dimension. Unfortunately, the Eye’s power source, an artifact known as the Fulcrum Star, was hidden by Darkwater shortly before he was killed in a mutiny organized by Slag.
Rusty Pete arrives and, with the help of Slag’s still-functioning head, guides Ratchet and Talwyn to Darkwater’s tomb in Morrow Caverns. After Talwyn is separated from the group by a cave-in, Ratchet and Pete travel on and reach Darkwater’s ship. Pete then connects Slag’s head to Darkwater’s body, revealing that his only loyalty is to his former captain. Resurrected, Slag, sharing his new body with the vengeful spirit of Darkwater, takes control of Darkwater’s ghost crew and fleet and sets out to pillage Hoolefar Island. After a pitched battle on the beach, the pirates are defeated and retreat.
With the Smuggler’s help, Ratchet locates Darkwater Cove, where the Star is said to be hidden. After passing a series of tests set up by Darkwater, Ratchet accesses the treasure vault, only to fall into a cavern. The pirates arrive, confiscate the Star, and take Talwyn captive, leaving Sprocket to keep Ratchet from following them. Upon defeating him, Ratchet and the Smuggler pursue the enemy fleet.

Quest for Booty was announced as one of the free games given by Sony as part of their ‘Welcome Back’ package as a result of the PlayStation intrusion, which left users offline for over 3 weeks. (Europe and Australia only, replacing the game Super Stardust HD being offered in North America). [6]

It was announced as A Crack in Time in March 2009. A Crack in Time was released for the PlayStation 3 in North America on October 27, 2009, [7] in Europe on November 4, 2009, [8] Australia on November 5, 2009 [9] and in the United Kingdom on November 6, 2009. [8]

1UP.com’s Nick Suttner described the game as «a rollicking few hours, polished to a sheen and even better-paced than its full-length predecessors, although Booty tromps off with its own side story, ending on the same cliffhanger with little more resolved.» Suttner also expressed that the game looks slightly better than Tools of Destruction due to improved lighting and better textures. IGN reviewer Jeremy Dunham says «Quest for Booty has been designed as a quick four-hour experience and it feels shortchanged because of it. Though its shooting and platforming sequences are fun and of high production, it still seems like there’s something missing,» but said that «there are some really cool puzzles and new gameplay elements.» [13]

Вот и получается. Если в Tools of Destruction проносился по планетам, словно торнадо, в вихре обломков и пламени, то в Quest for Booty сражаешься с редкими противниками, прыгаешь по платформам, отгадываешь простенькие загадки. Это совсем не плохо. Это действительно интересно — тем более, разработчики подняли планку сложности и не забыли про фирменное разнообразие. Но как-то пресно. Quest for Booty создана на движке прошлогодней Tools of Destruction, которая была и до сих пор остается одной из красивейших игр в этом поколении. Графика с тех пор не претерпела значительных изменений, только пиксельные эффекты стали использовать активнее, да улучшили динамическое освещение, что позволило разработчикам делать такие хитрые вещи, как, например, головоломка с использованием теней, и пещерные, темные уровни, где единственным источником света становится светящийся слизень над головой Ратчета. Субъективно кажется, что чуть-чуть подняли разрешение текстур. Но этот показатель «аршином общим не измерить».
Действие дополнения разворачивается всего на одной планете, разбитой на несколько небольших локаций. В поисках сокровищ убиенного предводителя пиратов Ратчету придется излазить пару островков и пещер, а также сразиться с роботами, прыгая с одного флибустьерского корабля на другой. Сюжетная линия все также насыщена диалогами и больными на голову персонажами, вовремя возникающими на сцене, чтобы отмочить очередную шутку или каверзу.
Поскольку Кланк пребывает в плену у странных пришельцев Зони, Ратчет потерял его способности к плаванию под водой и полетам в воздухе. Остались только прыжки, да разводным ключом научился цепляться за дальние объекты, чтобы энергетическим лучом их к себе подтягивать. Благодаря этой особенности появилась периодическая необходимость поворачивать, подтаскивать и составлять платформы, прокладывая себе путь к цели, что неплохо освежило типичные скачки по уступам.

Diagnosis
Возможно, именно поэтому после прохождения возникает такой неприятные осадок. Вместо «того же самого», только «больше и лучше», мы получили просто хороший, одноразовый, красивый платформер. Пройти, получить удовольствие и удалить с жесткого диска. Если купите — вряд ли пожалеете. Ребята из Insomniac Games уверенно держат планку качества. Но и пропустить можно безболезненно, поскольку никаких свежих впечатлений получить не удасться. Только принять участие в небольшом приключении, где Ратчет находит координаты местонахождения Кланка.

Sure it’s one of the best PSN games around, but as a Ratchet game, it’s too short.
True, you can purchase the game from PlayStation Network. either that or you can buy it dirt cheap from your local retailer for around the same price. Either way while it’s a great game, it’s feels like a great MINI-. Read Full Review

Without question the worst-ever installment of the series. Beyond the astonishing brevity of the game, large sections of the game are played almost completely in the dark, where you can’t see anything at all.
The story is pointless, the weapons are utterly boilerplate for a Ratchet game (and almost completely generic even for any other game), it has almost no humor or charm, and Without question the worst-ever installment of the series. The story is pointless, the weapons are utterly boilerplate for a Ratchet game (and almost completely generic even for any other game), it has almost no humor or charm, and again, the object manipulation and «light/dark» gameplay is so tedious and awful, it ruins the game. The last level prior to the final battle is one of the worst levels I’ve ever seen, in more than 25 years of gaming.

Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty is a platform game by Insomniac Games for the PlayStation 3. It is the second game in the Ratchet & Clank Future saga.
The game is also known as Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty in PAL regions, and Ratchet & Clank Future Gaiden: Kaizoku Dark Water no Hihou in Japan.
It was released primarily through the PlayStation Network with a physical copy of the game also being released in the PAL region. A download code for the game was later included in physical copies of Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus. It was also was one of games offered to players for free as part of the PSN’s Welcome Back package.
Story
The story takes place one year after the events of Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. Ratchet and Talwyn are looking for Captain Darkwater, who is said to be an expert on the Zoni. However, it is revealed that Darkwater is dead and the two are captured. They are put into a cannon by two pirates named Rusty Pete and Slag, who banish them to Hoolefar Island.
Upon reaching the island and the main settlement, it is revealed that the supply beacon has been deactivated. Ratchet once again runs into the Smuggler and buys a Versabolt from him. This Versabolt allows Ratchet to repair the supply beacon and in return, the island’s leader shows Ratchet the Obsidian Eye. The Obsidian Eye is the device that Darkwater used to make contact with the Zoni.
However, Darkwater also removed the Eye’s power source, the Fulcrum Star. Rusty Pete returns and says that Darkwater had a map that leads to the hiding place of the Star. When the group comes upon Darkwater’s body, Ratchet and Talwyn are separated. Ratchet is forced to go to Darkwater’s ship with Pete, who then turns on him.
Pete resurrects Darkwater using Slag’s head and a curse is unleashed that resurrects Darkwater’s crew as well. Ratchet escapes back to the island he defends it from the pirate attack. Talwyn returns and they head to Darkwater’s treasure cove with the help of the Smuggler. At the main vault, Ratchet falls into a trap and Slagwater and Pete appear. They capture both Talwyn and the Star before leaving Ratchet there.
Escaping, Ratchet and the Smuggler head to the Azorean Sea. Ratchet manages to free Talwyn and the duo fight Slagwater. When he is defeated, they take the Star from him. Once they get back to the island, Ratchet activates the Eye. It is revealed that the Zoni have taken Clank to an alternate dimension, where he is malfunctioning and stuck in suspended animation. The Zoni have hired a doctor to fix him and it is revealed that the doctor in question is Doctor Nefarious. Upon seeing this, Ratchet and Talwyn set off the save Clank. At the end of the game, Pete is shown complaining to Slag’s head.

Вот и сотрудники Insomniac не полезли в бутылку с очередным продолжением Ratchet & Clank, на этот раз отделавшись от поклонников коротенькой Quest for Booty – то ли дополнением к прошлогодней Tools
of Destruction, то ли вступительной главой к новым приключениям лопоухого Рэтчета и его временно похищенного помощника. Несколько (правда, довольно обширных) уровней, кое-какие улучшения по мелочам, плюс внушительная порция традиционных шуток – вот и все, что уместилось в три с лишним гигабайта. И да – вновь не обошлось без инсталляции, причем, учитывая размеры игры, на удивление продолжительной.

Собственно игровой процесс, вполне предсказуемо, остался прежним – и удачно сочетает шутер от третьего лица с платформенными элементами. Первого теперь несколько поубавилось, а второго, наоборот, стало заметно больше – хорошо это или плохо, зависит от ваших личных предпочтений. Кроме того, Quest for Booty куда чаще, чем прежде, заставляет пользователей решать простенькие головоломки: их здесь на глаз примерно столько же, сколько наберется во всей Tools of Destruction. Сохранится ли
эта тенденция впредь, сказать пока трудно, но возможность слегка пошевелить мозгами Ratchet & Clank совершенно точно не повредит, по крайней мере, в нынешних пропорциях.
Наконец, нельзя не отметить и положительные изменения, замеченные нами в графике. На первый взгляд картинка за год практически не изменилась, но со временем начинаешь замечать похорошевшие текстуры, явно возросшую детализацию в отдельных сценах и кое-какие новые спецэффекты.
To disc or not to disc?
Как и в случае с некоторыми другими PSN-проектами, Sony не рискнула ограничивать Quest for Booty рамками сетевой службы – менее чем через месяц после появления игры в Сети она вышла во многих странах (в том числе и в России) и на Blu-ray. К счастью, у издателя хватило здравого смысла выставить на новинку ценник, вполне отвечающий ее «промежуточному» статусу – за 699 рублей вы наверняка не откажетесь поучаствовать в спасении Клэнка.

Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty Review
The Lombax got shorter.
Now, «less than impressed» doesn’t mean that Quest for Booty is a bad game. That’s actually not the case. In fact, there are some really cool puzzles and new gameplay elements that I’d like to see expanded upon when we get to the next title (and it extends the Captain Slag storyline from Tools, and Slag was one of that game’s most interesting characters). No, what’s truly behind Ratchet’s lack of punch is the decision to follow an «episodic» method of design rather than the series’ usual epic approach. Though the episodic format may have worked well for Siren when it was released on the PlayStation Network last month, it doesn’t fit the Ratchet & Clank universe nearly as comfortably (even with its huge helping of pirate-themed silliness).
The Kinetic Tether offers some interesting gameplay opportunities.
The reason being, as any Ratchet fan will tell you, is that the basis of the franchise’s success has always been its mix of excellent pacing and gameplay progression supported by a deep arsenal of weapons and humor. Here, the three- to four-hour adventure doesn’t allow you to enjoy the finer points of the series. The weapon upgrades are the shallowest they’ve been in years and, other than the «Kinetic Tether» ability given to your wrench, the munitions stash is just a do-over from the last game minus a few. Obviously, this means that there’s a much smaller incentive for fans and veterans to experiment with weapons because they’ve already seen them in more powerful incarnations or had more of them to play with. Likewise, the shorter gaming time also means that there are fewer opportunities for the story to set things up and the jokes aren’t as amusing as they normally are in the full-sized efforts.
Despite these issues and concerns, though, Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty still has enough of a pedigree to make it worth checking out anyway. The previously-mentioned Kinetic Tether, for example, adds heavier puzzle and platforming elements to the series and, in that sense, makes it a bit harder than the retail game before it. If you haven’t seen it yourself, the tether is essentially a prehensile control-laser that can be used to activate spring-jumps that lift Ratchet into the air (usually towards jumping challenges of some kind) or to pull out bridges and lower or manipulate platforms that solve several «deep chasm» problems.
One my favorite ways to employ the tether comes near the end of the game. In this scenario, you’re tasked with using the feature to move different environmental objects around so that, when positioned in front of a spotlight, they cast multiple shadows that can be pieced together like a jigsaw to form a recognizable image. It’s creativity like that that keeps Quest for Booty fun even in its highly-downsized form, and it keeps me intrigued about how Insomniac will continue to explore the use of the tether in its next project.
Also, familiar and scaled-back as they may be, the weapons are still quite a joy to blow stuff up with. The Tornado Launcher is back, as is the Fusion Grenade, Lightning Ravager and Predator Launcher, and the control scheme (particularly lock-strafe mode) is as responsive as ever. So, while the types of enemies you’ll face are more limited than before (expect to fight robot pirates and ghost pirates almost exclusively, with the occasional boss or creature-thing thrown in here and there), at least you can still light them up in a number of different ways. However, It would have been nice to see a better mix of foes that have weaknesses against certain gun types, or just a better mix of enemies in general. Even so, there’s no denying the basic «twitch» appeal that the Ratchet franchise continues to maintain even when condensed.

Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty is a decent diversion for the price, but will make you long for the next full installment in the series.
Man, I really hope you like pirates and robots, because Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty is, if nothing else, a vehicle for as much campy robot-pirate humor as a downloadable title can hold. Much like your Ikea bookshelf, you’ll find that Quest for Booty looks great for the price, but doesn’t really contain the love and craftsmanship of its higher-priced counterparts.
While this sounds all well and good, the story in Quest for Booty does little to flesh out the universe. Players that didn’t make it through Tools of Destruction will be dropped into a world full of undeveloped characters and a plot that seems to revolve more around setting up campy pirate jokes than continuing the story arc from the previous game. As someone who thoroughly enjoyed Tools of Destruction, I found much of the charm to be missing and the whole experience to be a little hollow.

With subtitles like Up Your Arsenal, Going Commando and Tools of Destruction, the Ratchet series has a pretty well-established reputation for delivering the goods when it comes to weaponry. Quest for Booty eschews the gun collecting and instead, in true abilitease fashion, starts you off with a set number of guns that you subsequently lose and then recover throughout the course of the game. This strips away an essential layer of the gameplay, leaving only the sticky residue of a half-hearted weapon powering-up mechanic. With enough use, each weapon will increase in power, up to a maximum level of five. Considering that each gun already starts on level three, the gun leveling doesn’t require much effort. On top of that, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a real need to use more than two or three items from your limited arsenal. Finally, as if to make the entire process even less meaningful, you’ll keep the weapon’s earned experience when you die. This is standard for the series, but the new levels come so quickly that you don’t really get a sense of accomplishment when you’ve finally maxed out your weapons.

The presentation is amazing for a downloadable title. The graphics, voice acting and animation are all comparable to its big-budget brother. You won’t be overwhelmed with the variety in the enemies and environments, but what you do encounter looks great and seems to fit very nicely into the universe. The music is probably the only thing about the package that seems to not measure up, and it can get somewhat repetitive. Imagine taking a road trip with a guy who can only remember the first five bars to the Pirates of the Caribbean theme song. I was also hoping for a few more cutscenes, but considering the abbreviated length of the game, I can’t really find fault in their absence.
I guess Quest for Booty just feels like the Aladdin 2 of Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. It has all the same elements as the original, but it just doesn’t deliver the charm and appeal. Of course, it is an intentionally shorter game at a markedly lower price, so it’s not unexpected that some compromises would have to be made. In the end, Ratchet and Clank Future: Quest for Booty delivers a quarter of a game at a quarter of the price, and ultimately, you’re only getting a quarter of the entertainment.

I am deeply disappointed in Quest for Booty.
The only reason why Quest for Booty was so short is because Insomniac made it as a downloadable game on the PSN in North America, which therefore, many gamers wanted to purchase the game from the PSN. I assume you are from Europe and got the game on a disc instead, which I could understand why you would be disappointed in purchasing a game that’s has approximately 3 hours of gameplay for an expensive price (according to what I’ve heard from those who are outside of Canada and the States).
I think it would of been a wise choice to have Quest the Booty to come with A Crack in Time for those who have bad internet connection to access the Playstation Network (such as myself) or just put more gameplay and story value to the game. After all, A Crack in Time is one game you cannot jump right away to if you are not aware with Quest for Booty and Tools of Destruction, especially Tools of Destruction.
But yeah, it is only a miniadventure though, for the gap between ToD and CiT… as Tipsy said

Before I played the game I watch one of the trailers and heard Insomniac mention it wasn’t as long as the other titles. I also noticed how you just stay on ONE planet.

I think, if they had not had the piratey thing in ToD, then had a longer game for QfB (proper length for a Ratchet title) and had a generally fuller game with replay value and so on, it would probably be my favourite Ratchet game, but alas, it’s a short, hastily thought out game

The Insomniac Engine 2.0 was used in Tools of Destruction and in Quest for booty, so nothing was even changed around. The only difference was that in A Crack In Time, A new 4.0 engine was used along with All 4 one.
Those numbers are inaccurate Insomniac have never named or numbered their engines before.
But you are right in that QFB was not much different from ToD, it cost them less to make (a lot less) and they got quite a good profit out of it. Which is great, because the more money they have the better the games!

Captain Slag: Twas a cheap shot, I tell ye! Somebody unplugged me controller.
Ratchet: This is it, Talwyn. Darkwater has to be here somewhere.
Talwyn: Be careful, Ratchet. Merdegraw’s an unregulated planet. Unwanted visitors have a bad habit of dissapearing from here.
Rusty Pete: Alas, poor Cap’n! No one misses you but. but me.
Rusty Pete (Mimicking Captain Slag): I miss you too, Rusty Pete. You may not have me body, but you’ll always have me heart.
Rusty Pete: The crew hates me, Cap’n!
Rusty Pete: (screams)

Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty
Visually too it’s very fetching, matching Tools of Destruction for bright, massive environments and a solid frame-rate, and managing a few sexy new effects like the wind-swept ocean background to the levels on or around the pirate fleet.
That said, it’s with some displeasure that we have to report that around half the game is dark and dingy! This isn’t entirely shocking, since we’re chasing pirates into treasure caves and doing battle against choppy old seas in the background, but Hoolefar’s the prettiest area mostly by dint of being outside in the sunshine. If the next Ratchet & Clank game, due out in «fall 2009» according to the end sequence, goes all Warrior Within, there will be trouble.
That isn’t a long time to wait, considering Tools of Destruction came out last year, but when you’re done with the end credits and booted back to the title screen, it may feel that way. As the game wraps up, Ratchet receives coordinates for a new planet, and we hoped in vain that meant somewhere new to visit, more bolts to collect and new platforms to jump on, because the game overall feels more like the opening act of a standard Ratchet & Clank. We were ready to switch off the console for the evening and pick it up again the next day, but we weren’t ready for the end.
Which doesn’t leave a lot to be enthusiastic about, as we can only mention the wrench abilities so many times. Quest for Booty is a solid, funny little platform game with good camerawork and controls so long established that their pristine execution scarcely warrants mention, but it feels so much like a regular Ratchet & Clank game that it’s jarring to discover it ends so quickly, leaving us to damn it over and over again with faint praise. At GBP 9.99 it’s probably worth it for a couple of evenings of entertainment, but for all the respawning swashbucklers and the catchy Pirates of the Caribbean style theme tune, it could really do with another significant hook.
Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty is out now on PSN and will be released on Blu-ray on 12th September. It costs ten quid.

The third entry in the Ratchet & Clank Future saga on the PlayStation 3, after Tools of Destruction and Quest for Booty, and the seventh mainline game in the Ratchet & Clank series overall.
Dr. Nefarious returns to take control of the Great Clock, a «marvel of science and sorcery» that regulates time throughout the universe, and is located in the exact center of the universe. give or take fifty feet. As in Secret Agent Clank, the duo spend most of the game separated, trying to reunite and stop Nefarious, while they both learn the truth about their respective pasts. Ratchet discovers that he isnt the last Lombax standing like he once thought when he meets a rebel named Alister Azimuth, who wants to reset time to prevent the purge of his species; meanwhile, Clank discovers that the Zoni are related to Orvus, his true creator and caretaker of the Great Clock.

The presentation is amazing for a downloadable title. The graphics, voice acting and animation are all comparable to its big-budget brother. You won’t be overwhelmed with the variety in the enemies and environments, but what you do encounter looks great and seems to fit very nicely into the universe. The music is probably the only thing about the package that seems to not measure up, and it can get somewhat repetitive. Imagine taking a road trip with a guy who can only remember the first five bars to the Pirates of the Caribbean theme song. I was also hoping for a few more cutscenes, but considering the abbreviated length of the game, I can’t really find fault in their absence.
I guess Quest for Booty just feels like the Aladdin 2 of Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. It has all the same elements as the original, but it just doesn’t deliver the charm and appeal. Of course, it is an intentionally shorter game at a markedly lower price, so it’s not unexpected that some compromises would have to be made. In the end, Ratchet and Clank Future: Quest for Booty delivers a quarter of a game at a quarter of the price, and ultimately, you’re only getting a quarter of the entertainment.

Xbox Live Arcade may have been romping the headlines recently with Braid, Geometry Wars 2 and now Galaga Legions, but let’s not forget that PlayStation Network is enjoying a renaissance as well, with Siren: Blood Curse, PixelJunk Eden and now the heavyweight Ratchet & Clank establishing fierce competition for the contents of your PSN wallet.
You can also use the wrench to pick up specific objects. Some of these are explosive, and can be tossed with the circle button, but more frequently you’re called upon to pick up a glow-in-the-dark grub to light the way across narrow walkways and fend off crazed bats that only attack in the dark, like cute and cuddly versions of Gears of War’s Kryll. We’re not exactly in portal gun territory with either of the new functions, but the new wrench techniques are put to increasingly good use over the game’s handful of stages, culminating in an excellent puzzle involving shadows.
Those of you who follow Ratchet for the laughs as well as the level design are well-served, too. Ratchet’s not flying between planets now, so away from the in-engine cut-scenes comical dimwit Rusty Pete is sensibly employed as narrator over friendly storybook visuals, and joined by Cap’n Slag to deliver a few good jokes along the way (Slag complains he only died in Tools of Destruction because someone unplugged his controller, incidentally). Whether or not Ratchet finds Clank we’ll leave you to discover, but you can expect to bump into a few old friends.

Tools of Destruction is a return to the third-person action adventure gameplay from the original three entries on the PlayStation 2, with elements of shooting, role-playing, platforming, puzzle-solving and on-rails space combat. Ratchet can collect all-new weapons which can be upgraded through use and now through Raritanium, as well as gadgets to overcome obstacles. The game introduces devices, which are rarer, non-upgradable support weapons. Clank has his own gameplay sections that allow him to command the Zoni to complete stages. Tools of Destruction also introduces a few gameplay elements controlled by the PlayStation 3 SIXAXIS tilt functionality.

Gameplay
Overview
The duo travel between the planets of the Polaris Galaxy using the Aphelion, a sentient lombax ship, completing a set of objectives on a planet before obtaining coordinates for the next planet to progress through the story. Objectives normally require the player to control Ratchet and traverse through a linear section on a planet, fighting enemies on the way and using gadgets to complete puzzles.
Other objectives are varied. For some missions, the player controls Clank as he commands Zoni to complete a set of puzzles to traverse through a section. At other times, the player flies the Aphelion through an on-rails section to defeat enemies (normally Space Pirates), by either flying the ship or controlling the turret on the back as Clank, before defeating a boss at the end of the section and then progressing onward. Ratchet can also participate in the Imperial Fight Festival on planet Mukow, a set of gladiator battles from which bolts can be earned. Ratchet can additionally collect Leviathan Souls from various planets, traversing open areas to fight Leviathans to obtain and sell their souls to the Smuggler.
The player can collect bolts to purchase weapons, Raritanium to purchase weapon upgrades, holo-plans to construct the RYNO IV weapon when traded with the Smuggler, and gold bolts to buy skins. After completing the game, the player can choose either to warp back before defeating the final boss or replay the game in challenge mode, the latter of which allows the player to keep all of the weapons, devices, and armor they have collected so far and fight more powerful enemies. In this mode, Ratchet can purchase the Omega version of his weapons to upgrade them beyond their original maximum level. As these weapons are much more expensive, challenge mode has a bolt multiplier, which increases as Ratchet defeats enemies without taking a hit.
Equipment
Ratchet begins with ten units of nanotech, representing his health. This is can be increased by earning experience points from defeating enemies, up to 999. Ratchet can also purchase armor from a GrummelNet armor vendor which can reduce the amount of damage taken.
Tools of Destruction features fifteen completely new weapons. The Combuster and the Fusion Bomb are immediately available for free, while others are either purchased from vendors with bolts, discovered on planets, or in the case of the RYNO IV, obtained from the Smuggler once all holo-plans are acquired. Weapons can be upgraded from V1 up to V5, at which point its functionality changes, and in challenge mode, an Omega version of the weapon can be purchased, allowing it to be upgraded five more times to VX. Each weapon can also be upgraded using Raritanium from weapon vendors to improve it in areas such as rate of fire, ammunition, and damage, with each also including a special upgrade that, once unlocked, change the weapon significantly.
The game also features eight devices, which provide support in battle. These include the Groovitron, Mr. Zurkon, Transmorpher and Visi-Copter. Devices cannot be upgraded (with the exception of the Groovitron, which can be upgraded to the Gold Groovitron when purchased), and ammunition is scarce, meaning they are mostly used in emergencies.
Fourteen gadgets are featured in the game, of which five are original. The Heli-Pack, Hydro-Pack and Thruster-Pack are automatically owned by Clank, while the Grind Boots and Swingshot are automatically owned by Ratchet. Other gadgets are earned by completing objectives and are required to progress further through the game. Two gadgets, Clank’s Geo-Laser and Ratchet’s Decryptor, are controlled using the SIXAXIS tilt controller (though this can be changed in the options menu).
Clank gameplay
In some sections, the player controls Clank, who can command the Zoni to complete puzzles and traverse areas. Zoni control is similar to Gadgebot control from previous games, with some differences. The Zoni automatically fire at nearby enemies and allow Clank to slow down time on his own, allowing him to bypass quickly-moving obstacles. They can be commanded to use Levitate, allowing Clank to hover for a certain amount of time; to use Manipulate, allowing them to fix objects (provided he controls enough at a time); or to use Charge Up, energizing an object allowing Clank to proceed (using up the Zoni in the process).
Space combat
The player sometimes flies the Aphelion through on-rails sections. The Aphelion can move and aim its weapons anywhere on the screen, but is confined to the set path on-rails. The player is tasked to survive through this section and defeat the boss at the end before proceeding. Along the path, the player should destroy several ships to earn bolts, with larger ships arriving with exposed weak points that can be destroyed to take down the ships. Asteroids can also be destroyed to earn bolts. During these sections, the player sometimes is given control of Clank, who pilots the turret on the back of the ship, and the player must destroy incoming enemies and projectiles to survive. Once the boss is reached, the player must destroy the boss’ weak points to defeat the boss and move on.
Synopsis
Setting
Tools of Destruction takes place in the Polaris Galaxy, which is ruled by the cragmite Emperor Tachyon. After leaving planet Kerwan, Ratchet explores several sectors of the galaxy, as well as a few locations in space. The Polaris Galaxy was once home to the lombaxes after they had defeated the cragmites during the Great War, but Tachyon had since drove the lombaxes to near extinction. Abandoned Lombax technology can be found on many planets in the galaxy, such as Fastoon, Sargasso and Rykan V. Much of it has been found by Max Apogee, a lombax explorer who kept his findings in Apogee Space Station, now home to his daughter Talwyn. Much of the knowledge of the galaxy is contained within the IRIS supercomputer.
Emperor Tachyon controls much of the galaxy, with his drophyd armies defending his own territory and searching the galaxy for lombax technology. There are several planets not ruled by Tachyon, with Igliak as the capital. The galaxy is also home to Space Pirates led by Captain Slag, who attack and loot ships around the galaxy from their hideouts such as Ardolis. Several planets are also controlled by the kerchu, some of the galaxy’s greatest architects but also fierce defenders of their territory and hostile to outsiders.
At the start of the game, Ratchet and Clank were on planet Kerwan trying to complete one of Ratchet’s new vehicles, the nuclear-powered rocket sled. While Ratchet was assuring him that the vehicle would work fine, Clank received a distress call from Qwark, who was stationed at the Planetary Defense Center. Before Ratchet and Clank arrived at the Defense Center, Metropolis was attacked by an alien race known as the Drophyds, who worked for a villain named Emperor Percival Tachyon, the last of the Cragmites. The Cragmite Emperor was hunting down Ratchet, who was thought to be the last Lombax in the known universe and the greatest threat to Tachyon’s empire. Tachyon tried to make a deal with the duo, stating that if they both surrendered, the Drophyds would leave Metropolis unharmed. Ratchet and Clank tricked Tachyon; however, and fled into his warship. Having escaped from Kerwan in the warship, Ratchet and Clank were forced into Cryosleep by the ship’s autopilot system.
Some time later, they crash-landed on planet Cobalia in the Polaris Galaxy. While unconscious, Clank had a vision where he was flying in a strange city with a group of mysterious robots surrounding him saying, «His past is inside.» The vision ended when Ratchet woke him up. The duo made their way to a spaceport, where they met the Smuggler. The Smuggler told them that he would take them off Cobalia if they got the nearby Gelatonium Plant working again. After they agreed, he gave Ratchet the Gelanator. Ratchet and Clank were able to get the plant running again. The Smuggler gave the ride as promised, but only took them as far as Stratus City on planet Kortog.

The Smuggler ejected Ratchet and Clank onto the surface of Stratus City after a lifeform scan detected a Lombax signature on his ship. After fighting through the city, the Zoni upgraded Clank with the Robo-Wings. Using this new gadget, Ratchet and Clank flew to the Hall of Knowledge (with a Zoni’s guidance). There they had to flee the planet via an escape pod to the nearest planet, Fastoon, revealed to be a Lombax planet.
When the two landed on the devastated planet, Ratchet wondered where all the Lombaxes were. Clank explained that the planet was deserted years ago. They found an old, destroyed ship named Aphelion. After finding five Lombax Flight Components scattered around the area, Clank made his way through a Raritanium Mine with the help of the Zoni, and obtained the sixth and final one. The duo repaired Aphelion, who told them what happened on Fastoon. Upon Ratchet’s request, Aphelion played a Holo-Vite that they had received, which told him about the Imperial Fight Festival on planet Mukow.

They found after fighting in a tournament that Qwark had sworn loyalty to Tachyon. Qwark gave Ratchet a video as a prize for winning the tournament. The video revealed that Tachyon was plotting to search the entire Polaris Galaxy to find the «Lombax Secret.» Tachyon thought the secret was hidden in the Apogee Space Station in the Nundac Asteroid Ring.
Upon arriving at the Nundac Asteroid Ring, they found the Smuggler, who gave them the launch code to a pod that would take them to the Apogee Space Station. Ratchet and Clank rode the pod to the station’s Maintenance Hub and traversed it to reach the station’s interior. There they fought through the security system and almost made it to the final room’s entrance to find the door locked. The Zoni upgraded Clank with the Geo-Laser, allowing them to cut the wall open. Two old robots, Cronk and Zephyr, tried to attack Ratchet, but ended up running into each other. Talwyn then appeared and threatened to send Ratchet through the airlock. Upon realizing that Ratchet was a Lombax, she told Cronk and Zephyr to lower their guard. Talwyn then told Ratchet of her father, Max Apogee, and how space pirates had raided the station and stolen a pyramid-shaped artifact. Ratchet recalled the Smuggler mentioning space pirates that inhabited planet Ardolis, and on a hunch the duo flew to the Pirate Base.
Ratchet and Clank made their way to the base’s treasure room and recovered the artifact, but were forced to hide when Captain Slag and Rusty Pete flew to the room on a sail barge. Slag’s sense of smell helped him determine that there was a Lombax in the room. Talwyn then appeared and threw a smoke bomb when Ratchet and Clank dropped down a hole and made their way to the Skull Radio Tower. Outside the tower, they met up with Talwyn, Cronk and Zephyr. Talwyn couldn’t make the artifact work, and when she handed it to Ratchet, it hovered over his hands. When pressed one of the sides, a 3D map of a planet appeared, which Talwyn recognized as Rykan V. They then flew to the planet, but were forced to first fight through a fleet of Slag’s ships in the Rakar Star Cluster.
Ratchet, Clank, Cronk and Zephyr performed a HALO jump and fought through Tachyon’s forces, arriving and separating at a spaceport. At the spaceport, Ratchet and Clank bought a modified Gyro-Cycle from the Smuggler. They then made their way to a room with the Gyro-Cycle, where they met up with Talwyn, Cronk and Zephyr. Ratchet unlocked the door to the room, which was filled with nothing useful, except an ancient HoloVid projector. The projector played a video that revealed to them that the Lombax Secret was a helmet called the Dimensionator and gave them their next lead on the Dimensionator’s location.
They then traveled to planet Sargasso, where they tried to find the testing facility mentioned in the video. The Smuggler pointed out a destroyed launch pad for the Robo-Wings and sold them a Decrypter to fix it. Ratchet successfully got the pad working with the Decrypter and the duo flew to the facility with the Zoni’s guidance. Once at the testing facility, Ratchet and Clank encountered The Plumber once again. The Plumber gave them a 3 ¾ Centicubit Hexagonal Washer, and then left by flushing himself down a large toilet. Qwark contacted the heroes on their way back to Aphelion claiming that he may have found a clue.
After battling through another tournament on Mukow, Qwark showed them a video displaying the IRIS supercomputer, the largest supercomputer in the Polaris galaxy, which he believed would know the Dimensionator’s location. After downloading the coordinates to IRIS’s location, Clank went inside the computer to repair it. The Zoni appeared yet again and Clank had a vision of Talwyn being locked away in an unknown prison. Ratchet learned about Tachyon’s origins. Tachyon was frozen as an egg and eventually found by Lombax Trillium miners on the Kreeli Comet who then raised him on Fastoon. However, once he learned of his Cragmite heritage and origins, he waged war against the Lombaxes.
The duo traveled to Zordoom and freed Talwyn from her cell. Once Ratchet and Clank got back to Aphelion, Talwyn contacted them and said she had found Cronk and Zephyr in the scrap compressor. They continued on towards planet Jasindu, first having to fight through Slag’s fleet near the Verdigris Black Hole.
After dealing with the pirate fleet, Ratchet and Clank landed on Jasindu. They made their way to a grind rail and traversed it while a giant robot controlled by a Kerchu tried to kill them. Upon destroying the robot in an arena, Ratchet found the Dimensionator. However, Captain Slag and his pirate fleet arrived, stole the Dimensionator and threatened to kill Ratchet and destroy Clank if they followed him. Aphelion tracked Slag’s fleet to the Ublik Passage.
The heroes willfully followed the pirates and defeated Captain Slag. Ratchet was then given the «honor» of becoming the new captain of the space pirates by Rusty Pete. Ratchet refused, though, and said he just wanted the Dimensionator. Qwark popped out of a pirate crate, took the Dimensionator and vowed to throw it into a black hole while fleeing in an escape pod. Rusty Pete, still claiming Ratchet to be the captain, revealed that the escape pod would land on the Cragmite homeworld on Reepor.

Ratchet, Clank, Cronk and Zephyr performed a HALO jump and fought through Tachyon’s forces. With Cronk and Zephyr in control of two large cannons, Ratchet, Clank and Talwyn tried to find a way inside the stronghold. After splitting up, Ratchet and Clank made their way to a raised platform and found Tachyon wearing the Dimensionator with Qwark under his walking throne’s leg. Tachyon summoned the Cragmites from exile, knocking Ratchet unconscious and separating him from Clank. Clank found his way back to Aphelion with the help of the Zoni, who showed him another vision of Ratchet standing in front of a portal on Fastoon before a muffled scream was heard. Meanwhile, Ratchet traversed his way back to Aphelion and found Talwyn and Zephyr repairing a broken Cronk. Ratchet was devastated when he began thinking that Clank had perished. Clank flew down with the Robo-Wings and the duo was reunited. Aphelion said that her sensors had picked up a Cragmite armada rapidly approaching Meridian City on planet Igliak. Talwyn told Ratchet that Meridian City was the capital of the Polaris Galaxy and that they needed to hurry while she and Zephyr repaired Cronk.
Ratchet and Clank then traveled to Meridian City, fought off Tachyon’s forces, Gyro-Cycled through the Sector-3 Construction Zone, flew through a tunnel and finally found Qwark cowering in a closet. Clank then believed that Tachyon may be headed for Fastoon, based on his vision from the Zoni. Ratchet willingly agreed to go there, finally seeming to believe Clank about the Zoni.
Ratchet is left speechless
Back on Apogee Space Station, Rusty Pete tried to teach Qwark how to become a pirate, and Cronk and Zephyr reenacted the battle between Ratchet and Tachyon. Ratchet wondered if Tachyon told the truth about his purpose and father. Clank told Ratchet that Tachyon was telling the truth and that Ratchet had filled his purpose by vanquishing Tachyon. The Zoni appeared once more, this time visible to everyone. They trapped Clank in a psychic field and took him through into a dimensional portal. Ratchet tried to stop the Zoni, but the a defensive field pushed him to the ground. As Clank disappeared in a burst of light, all Ratchet could do was stare helplessly at the last spot he saw his friend.
Development
Background
Beginning development, a visualization for what a PlayStation 3 Ratchet & Clank game would look like was made by recreating a diorama of Metropolis in the Resistance: Fall of Man engine, adding vehicles and sending a camera through it as well as audio effects. This was shown at the 2006 Game Developers Conference as Ratchet & Clank Future, with a blimp showing the logo. [1] [2] Every asset, from Ratchet’s model to a basic crate, had to be remade for the game. The shapes of the characters were also refined to match the PlayStation 3’s polygon count and higher resolution. [3] [4] This also led to more details in character models and animation, as while the skeleton for Ratchet’s model had 110 bones in the PlayStation 2 games, for Tools of Destruction it used 120 for his face alone. [5] T.J. Fixman was hired by Insomniac and worked on Tools of Destruction as his first project in the series, working with Insomniac CEO Ted Price and game director Brian Allgeier to develop a franchise bible to link together the lore of the games, tying up the previously loose mythology and giving the characters more backstory and depth. [6] [7]
The team then established the goal of creating one fully-realized and playable level by preproduction, to give them an understanding of what was needed to run the game and a set of benchmarks to plan content for the rest. [1] This level was Kerchu City on Jasindu, and though the level was functional, it was unstable. [8] When designing weapons for the game, the team established three criteria: «Comedic», «Strategic» and «Spectacle». [7]
After pre-production, no work was ever discarded or cut during actual production. [8]
Technology
A team of 70+ full-time employees worked on the game with numerous more shared resources between Ratchet & Clank and Resistance, developing things within eight-week block cycles of various teams creating components for the game and showcasing them, with over 150 developer kits in the studio. [1] Despite this, the team was understaffed and extra work needed to be done by other employees, leading to the game being rushed near the end of production. [9] Despite planning for 25 planets, five space combat missions, an hour of cutscenes and both a co-operative and online mode, the game finished with sixteen planets, three space combat missions, 45 minutes of cutscenes and single-player only. [8] Difficulties working with the hardware and a new engine meant a smaller scope, fewer scenes (though with higher fidelity), no multiplayer or co-op, no spherical worlds, and no racing or similar special modes. [3] Insomniac had also aimed to include procedurally generated planets and open space exploration, which were also cut, [7] although open space exploration was later included in A Crack in Time.
A new form of texture streaming was introduced, allowing them more variety and lushness to surfaces. [10] The team were able to stabilize their development techniques, and in a postmortem of the development for Game Developer, Insomniac employee John Fiorito concluded that while a lot of things did not work out for the team, a lot more of them did. [9] Additionally, the larger polygon counts for the PlayStation 3 allowed weapon designs to become more elaborate, making the art style more complex. [11]
When marketing the game, it was shown on the TV show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, with a unique character named «Captain James» made to tie-in with the episode. This used up a week’s time. A demo had also been made to showcase at E3, though it only ran at 30 frames per second and was therefore scrapped until a later one could be made. [9]
In September 27, 2007, Insomniac announced that the game had gone gold, meaning it had completed development, and that a demo would be released on PlayStation Store, with the game’s full release coming the following month. [12] Due to quickness in the factory, some retailers obtained and sold copies earlier than the official October 30 release date. [13] Due to the difficulty translating «Future» in some languages, the game was released in Europe simply as Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction. The game had ultimately been localized for thirteen languages. [10]
The game was made in memory of Dan Johnson, a former Insomniac employee who tragically died before release, with the credits dedicated to his memory.
Cut content
A pickup known as the Plasma Shield was intended to be included, and would be used by breaking shield crate. It would have function similarly to the Shield Charger from previous games and protect Ratchet from damage.

Tools of Destruction received positive reviews from critics. Reviews praised the lush visuals and gameplay, and compared the game to previous entries in the series. [16] [18] [20]
Reviewers mostly praised the story, with Eurogamer calling the storyling «excellent» [16] while IGN praised the story for having Insomniac’s «most intriguing and diverse universe yet». [20] However, GameSpot was more critical, saying that the story «falls flat» and «isn’t very interesting». [18]
Critics praised the gameplay and the variety of weapons, but criticized the easy difficulty. IGN concluded that the gameplay of previous games had been «refined to award winning levels», but says that gamers «may be disappointed in Future‘s difficulty». [20] Eurogamer noted that the enjoyment players will have depends on «if you got on with the previous Ratchet & Clank games», but claimed that it «isn’t ever an especially challenging game» and that the developers did «little to innovate the gameplay in any meaningful sense». [16] GameSpot called the game «extremely easy» and claimed it gets «remotely difficult only in the last hour or so», and praised the shooting and platforming gameplay while criticizing the variety of mechanics in the game, claiming that it «takes too much of the focus off the tight platforming and and fun combat». IGN claimed that the game had «surpassed Going Commando as the best game in the series», and was the «best game of any series on the PlayStation 3 thus far». [20]

The Ratchet & Clank series is a video game franchise created by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was developed as a Sony intellectual property exclusively for PlayStation hardware, having begun on the PlayStation 2 and since being developed for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation Portable. Many releases are also playable on the PS Vita hardware and PlayStation Now online service. Outside of video games, the series has been featured in many forms of media such as comic books and film.
The games feature a science fiction setting and span a variety of genres, mostly focused on third-person action-adventure and shooting, with elements of platforming, racing, and puzzle solving. They are primarily known for their weaponry, featuring a wide variety of often comically outlandish, yet strategically valuable, weapons. The plot arc focuses on Ratchet, a lombax mechanic with a lifelong desire to explore space, and Clank, a Zoni robot created in a robot factory, as they go on adventures to save the universe from various threats.

Gameplay

In the main series, gameplay focuses on Ratchet, who carries Clank as a backpack, as he explores different planets to complete objectives before unlocking and moving onto another. Ratchet can jump and double jump, aided by Clank through built-in gadgets such as the Heli-Pack, plus he wields a wide variety of weapons and gadgets. Ratchet’s most common device is the OmniWrench, which appears in many varieties and is used as a melee weapon in combat, for turning bolt cranks, and picking up and throwing items (in later installments). His other weapons and gadgets can be cycled through using pause menus or the Quick Select. Bolts, which serve as the main form of currency in the series, can be obtained by defeating enemies and smashing crates, and they are required for purchasing weapons, armor, and other items the player may need. The player character is provided with health, in the form of nanotech, which is displayed (after the first two installments) as a numeric value. It can have its maximum capacity upgraded by defeating enemies (after the first installment) and can be replenished from nanotech crates. When depleted, the player will respawn at the most recent checkpoint (with no other negative consequences).

Gadgets are normally earned through story objectives, and they help Ratchet progress through otherwise inaccessible areas. These gadgets come in the form of items that can be manually controlled in place of weapons (with the most common being the Swingshot) or equipped items that, once acquired, will activate when needed (with the most common being Grind Boots and various hacking devices used to solve puzzles to unlock a room). Weapons are normally purchased at vendors with bolts or obtained for free by completing side or main story objectives. They can be upgraded and, in some cases, customized by the player in some form. In addition to this, Ratchet can purchase armor to help resist damage.

Many objectives also allow the player to control Clank exclusively, whose objectives involve puzzle-solving to complete them. Clank has a basic moveset, with the ability to double jump and use melee attacks, and like Ratchet, he can collect bolts and nanotech by breaking crates (though his maximum nanotech cannot be upgraded). Aside from this, Clank features different abilities (depending on the game) to allow him to resolve puzzles and move onto the next objective. Most commonly, Clank can command different Gadge-Bots (or Microbots in the second installment) through an environment to direct them to enter into terminals, allowing him to proceed.
Ratchet and Clank sometimes pilot vehicles to complete story and side missions. As they fly various spaceships on their adventures, they can often fly them in battle, dogfighting against enemies in space, or the skies of several planets. Additionally, they are often able to operate vehicles used in galactic racing events, such as hoverboards and hoverbikes.
Synopsis
Setting
The series is set in a science-fiction universe, in which Ratchet and Clank visit many planets within the Solana Galaxy, Bogon Galaxy, and Polaris Galaxy. The timeline begins with the first game in the year 5354, with time kept in a calendar similar to Earth’s calendar. [1] The universe is populated by many alien species and sentient robots, of which most are humanoid, though no humans exist in the universe. [2] The universe shares a common language, and a common currency in the form of bolts.
Aesthetically, many planets in the universe feature metropolises which are similar to 1950s and 1960s science fiction, [3] and feature a collision between nature and architecture, with signature rivets, cables, and tension wires holding things together. [4] Civilization is largely similar to 21st century Earth, leading to many popular culture references. Each galaxy is typically dominated by a megacorporation — Gadgetron Corporation in Solana, Megacorp in Bogon, and Grummel Net Industries in Polaris — whose vendors feature around the world, from which Ratchet purchases all his weaponry.
The universe was once home to the lombaxes, a race of expert engineers, who developed some of the most advanced technology and fastest spaceships in the universe. However, the lombaxes were mostly defeated by Percival Tachyon, a cragmite who sought revenge for his species after the lombaxes had defeated the cragmites during the Great War. While Ratchet is the last known lombax in the universe, he encounters two other lombaxes during the series: Angela Cross and Alister Azimuth.
The space-time continuum in the universe is kept in balance by the Great Clock, a space construct located roughly in the center of the universe operated by the Zoni, an invisible hive mind species who can manipulate time. It was constructed by Orvus to repair the space-time continuum after it was torn apart by the overuse of time travel by the fongoids.
The plot began with the first Ratchet & Clank. Ratchet lived on Veldin, a backwater planet in the Solana Galaxy, and longed for a life of adventure. He met a robot, Clank, who crash-landed on the planet. Shortly after meeting, the two embarked on a mission to save the galaxy from Chairman Drek, who was destroying planets to construct a new home for the blarg. While trying to save the galaxy, he sought the help of his idol, celebrity superhero Captain Qwark.
In Going Commando, Ratchet and Clank were abducted by Megacorp CEO Abercrombie Fizzwidget, who recruited Ratchet as a commando to retrieve a biological «experiment», which was stolen by a mysterious thief. In Up Your Arsenal, Ratchet and Clank returned to Solana, which has come under attack by the evil Dr. Nefarious, a robotic mad scientist who aimed to exterminate all organic life forms and replace the population with robots. They teamed up with the Galactic Rangers, and Captain Qwark’s team, the Q-Force, to defeat Nefarious. In Deadlocked, Ratchet and Clank were abducted by Gleeman Vox and forced to participate in the illegal combat sport DreadZone, in which they were among many heroes featuring in a dangerous combat sport that has killed many heroes, and had to work to eliminate it.
After the original series, the main plot continued in the Future series. In Tools of Destruction, Kerwan was attacked by Emperor Tachyon, a cragmite who wished to assassinate Ratchet, the last lombax. This forced Ratchet to follow him back to Polaris in which, on his mission to defeat Tachyon, he learned more about his race, the lombaxes, while Clank was encountered by the Zoni, and the two explored the story of their origin. In Quest for Booty, Ratchet searched for Clank, who was abducted by the Zoni, and searched for a device known as the Obsidian Eye on Merdegraw. In A Crack in Time, Ratchet continued his search for Clank in the Breegus System, while Clank woke up aboard the Great Clock to repair it after Nefarious attempted to take over the Clock for himself to control time. Finally, in Into the Nexus, Ratchet and Clank worked to stop Vendra Prog from bringing the nethers into the universe, while Ratchet had to decide whether or not to find his race, and bring them home.

Compilations
The only compilation released for the series has been the Ratchet & Clank Collection, released for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. Idol Minds ported it to the PS3, while Mass Media Inc. ported it to PS Vita.
Other media
A manga written by Shinbo Nomura was released in 2005. A comic book series written by series writer TJ Fixman was released with six issues, both digitally, in select stores, and as a book containing all issues. A movie was produced by Rainmaker Entertainment and released in 2016, and though it was made in collaboration with Insomniac Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment, it was released by subsidiaries of Comcast and not by Sony Pictures Entertainment. In 2021 a short movie was released on Crave, produced by Mainframe Studios, formerly known as Rainmaker Entertainment.
Development
The Ratchet & Clank series has been directed by Brian Allgeier, the director of level design for the original series, since Tools of Destruction. Soundtracks were composed by David Bergeaud up to A Crack in Time.
Early concepts

Insomniac Games began planning their first PlayStation 2 project before completing Spyro: Year of the Dragon, and had decided against developing more Spyro games, instead opting to move away from brighter colors, cartoony characters, and platforming mechanics in favor of a much deeper story. [5]
Initially, they began developing an adventure-role playing game that took influences from Tomb Raider and The Legend of Zelda, internally titled both I5 (Insomniac’s fifth game) and Girl With a Stick (as the game featured a female protagonist who wielded a stick as her weapon), though both the team’s lack of enthusiasm for the project and Sony Computer Entertainment America’s executive producer Connie Booth’s advice against it led to the team ceasing production. Another idea that Insomniac had was a game titled Monster Knight, featuring a knight named Madi who would catch, grow, and wield intelligent monsters with unique personalities as weapons, armor, gear, and vehicles. These monsters would grow throughout the course of the game, and formed the basis for the weapons, gadgets, and role-playing game-like progression systems seen in Ratchet & Clank. [9]
PlayStation 2 era
Following this, Insomniac brainstormed ideas for a new project, with Brian Hastings proposing the idea of a reptilian alien traveling through planets and collecting weapons. [6] [10] This took several influences, including The Little Prince, Marvin the Martian, Star Wars, Conker’s Bad Fur Day, Banjo-Kazooie, Super Metroid, The Iron Giant, Super Mario 64, and The Legend of Zelda. [11] The original idea morphed into a fuzzy caveman, led to space by a robot on a mission to save the galaxy, before the caveman’s club was replaced with the OmniWrench 8000, and the caveman became a mechanic. [6]
With the concept in place, Insomniac shared some technology developed by Naughty Dog for Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy after being offered, taking a keen interest in the background rendering engine, [12] and the team continued to use and optimize the technology in between development of their PS2 titles, including adding code such as more efficient polygon occlusion technology that Naughty Dog would use in their own games. [13] [14]
Insomniac took inspiration from The Legend of Zelda, The Little Prince, Marvin the Martian from Looney Tunes, The Iron Giant, and Super Mario 64, with the intent to make an experience deeper than Spyro. [15] Almost every concept found its way into the game, as the team developed games in the series at a rapid pace. [16] Insomniac avoided referring to the new project as a platformer, wishing to distance the game from «collectathon» platformers of the time, though the video game press referred to it as a platformer nonetheless. [17] The story was thought of as a «Lethal Weapon meets Saturday morning cartoons» type of narrative. [18] [15] The first Ratchet & Clank had begun production in November 2001, and was released in November 2002.
Work began on a sequel before Ratchet & Clank was launched, as a sequel was approved five months before its release due to Sony’s confidence in its success. [13] The team felt they could further push the genre, and believed weapons in the original were too optional and that role-playing mechanics did not go deep enough. [19] They therefore focused on the ability to upgrade weapons and equipment, introducing even more role-playing elements to the game. Captain Qwark was added late into development due to the team missing his presence from the first game, allowing Qwark to become a staple of the series, appearing in all entries. [13]
After Going Commando was completed, the team conceptualized a new galactic calamity to be averted, in which they created Dr. Nefarious, [13] whose popularity led to him becoming a recurring character in the series. The third title used an adapted control scheme more similar to a third-person shooter, a strategic move to keep the series relevant, as the team had been surprised by how platformers and mascot-style games had become a tougher sell; this led to the game series evolving from a «platformer with shooting» to a «shooter with platforming» to remain relevant. [15] [18] With their final PS2 title, the team opted to deviate further from their roots with a grimmer story for Deadlocked, [20] and took inspirations from Halo. [15] [18]
PlayStation 3 era
Following this, Insomniac pursued its ambition of developing a launch title for a PlayStation console in the form of a drastically different title with Resistance: Fall of Man, a first-person shooter which took a few elements of the weaponry from Ratchet & Clank. [20] However, several titles were developed for other platforms by other developers. Going Mobile was a simplified but traditional Ratchet & Clank experience published by Sony Pictures Mobile for mobile phones. Sony Computer Entertainment also requested High Impact Games, a studio with ex-Ratchet developers, to develop Ratchet & Clank titles for the PlayStation Portable, beginning with Size Matters, which the team developed to take much of the experience to portable consoles and develop a narrative that conflict with future plans by Insomniac Games for the duo. [20]
After completing Resistance: Fall of Man, Insomniac Games had a greater grasp on development for the PlayStation 3 hardware, and began work on a more ambitious title in the form of the Future series, which would explore the duo’s past, beginning with Tools of Destruction. [21] The focus was now on creating a playable CGI film, maintaining the humor and heart of previous stories while going more in-depth. The new hardware brought the potential for greater graphical fidelity, but that also led to new challenges and required the team to remake every asset from scratch. [22] While creating a CGI movie, Insomniac also wanted to include procedurally generated planets, open space exploration (later included in A Crack in Time), and include a co-operative and online mode, but their ambitions had to be dialed back, and while twenty-five planets had been planned at first, the final product included only sixteen. [15] [23] Insomniac hired T.J. Fixman to write for the games at the start of this period. Fixman, Insomniac CEO Ted Price, and director Brian Allgeier worked on a franchise bible to tie together the previously loose lore and mythology from the games, as well as adding more depth to the characters and their backstories. [15] [18]
Tools of Destruction, the first in the new Future series, was released in October 2007. The next title in the series would be a short digital download title, in the form of Quest for Booty, released in 2008, and teasing the next release with «The Quest Continues in Fall 2009» upon completion. A Crack in Time was released the following year, expanding on the storytelling, rounding out the Future saga. Insomniac thought that A Crack in Time would be the final game in the series, though it sold well enough for that Sony requested Insomniac to continue the series. [15] [18]
Following this, Insomniac’s new studio in Durham, North Carolina was staffed with Ratchet & Clank veterans, and the team wished to be more experimental, making three very new and different Ratchet & Clank games. [24] All 4 One was developed as a co-operative multiplayer game, while Full Frontal Assault focused on competitive multiplayer. Into the Nexus returned to the series’ core gameplay and rounded off the Future series story, with the game featuring a more spooky atmosphere than previously. The bold new steps taken in the games were a strategic decision by Insomniac to adapt the series and embrace possible change. [18]
PlayStation 4 era
For their first PlayStation 4 title, Insomniac Games developed a re-imagining of Ratchet & Clank, seeing the animated film by Comcast as a great opportunity to return to the first game, making several updates to the visuals, gameplay, and narrative. [25] It was developed collaboratively with the film studios, with many assets reused by both from the PS3 titles. [25] It was also developed between both Insomniac’s North Carolina and Burbank, California studios. [26] The plot of the film had been changed largely by Hollywood writers, meaning it no longer fit within series’ lore, leading Insomniac to include Captain Qwark in the game as an unreliable narrator to resolve inconsistencies. [15]

The Ratchet & Clank series has generally been met with positive reviews, with its core series receiving higher praise than its spinoff titles. Its highest rated game has been Up Your Arsenal, with a 91.54% average review score on GameRankings, [31] and a 91% average review score on Metacritic, [32] while its lowest rated release on the original console of release is Full Frontal Assault at an average score of 64.63% on GameRankings, [55] and 64 on Metacritic. [57] Up Your Arsenal has also frequently been heralded as one of the best games of the PlayStation 2. IGN listed Up Your Arsenal as the 18th best PlayStation 2 game released, [64] while GamesRader listed it as 9th best, [65] Complex listed it as 12th best, [66] and Destructoid referred to it as a «pinnacle of the 3D platformer for its generation.» [67]
The series has been received positively for its varied gameplay, its satisfying weapons, its animated-style graphics, and its broad appeal to all ages. [25] [68] [69] [70] Speaking of the first three titles, IGN commented that their «focus on combat and creative weaponry was a great gameplay foundation, but their gadgets, puzzles, platforming, minigames, exotic locations, art direction, and sense of humor» helped make them special. However, the series has received criticism in some aspects. Among its positively received titles, many critics have admitted that many who become tired of the series’ formula may find its titles repetitive. Но он же стал причиной появления «паршивой овцы» серии – Ratchet: Deadlocked для PS2. Помимо отказа от Кланка из-за его слишком детского вида, в Deadlocked на смену платформингу и приключениям пришли суровые перестрелки и похожий на космодесантника Рэтчет.
Несмотря на великолепный кооператив и неплохое в целом качество игры, Deadlocked и ее более мрачная атмосфера оттолкнули многих давних фанатов из-за отказа от забавной индивидуальности серии в угоду избитым трендам видеоигр. Часть этих фанатов считает, что серия не оправилась до сих пор, но на наш взгляд они преувеличивают.
Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters (2007)
В играх для PSP есть нечто очаровательное. Это просто волшебная система! На этой консоли вышла Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, которая после во многом уникальной Ratchet: Deadlocked стала своего рода возвращением к истокам. К сожалению, это, пожалуй, зашло слишком далеко.
Название игры утверждает, что «размер имеет значение», но игра довольно короткая. Хотя с какой-то стороны это плюс – может быть, вам не успеют надоесть банальный сюжет и неинтересный геймплей. Но если вы любите Ratchet & Clank, этой игре тоже можно дать шанс.
Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction (2007)
После сложного периода взросления в лице Deadlocked Insomniac решили сосредоточиться на создании игры, которая объединяла бы классический безумный тон серии с более взрослой атмосферой и сюжетом, который воспринимался бы чуть серьезнее.
Tools of Destruction для PS3 значительно развивает сеттинг и лор серии Ratchet & Clank, а также гораздо более цельная, чем Deadlocked. Разработчикам удалось создать ощущение того, что для персонажей игры все происходит всерьез, облегчая формирование эмоциональной привязанности. Вместе с действительно достойной графикой это позволяет назвать данную часть идеальной для знакомства новичков с серией.
Secret Agent Clank (2008)
Secret Agent Clank основана на одноименном внутриигровом шоу из R&C: Up Your Arsenal. Фанатам понравилась концепция, но исполнение оставляло желать лучшего.
Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty (2008)
После подхода c «возвращением к истокам» в R&C: Tools of Destruction команда разработки никак не могла определиться с дальнейшим направлением развития серии. Результатом этой неопределенности стала экспериментальная игра, которая получилась своего рода попыткой понять, чего фанаты ждали от серии, чтобы сделать следующую часть лучше. И по какой-то причине она тоже основана на пиратской тематике.
Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time (2009)
Именно последняя часть трилогии «Будущего» заслужила право называться лучшей на данный момент игрой серии Ratchet & Clank. Для многих относительно недавних фанатов франшизы именно Crack in Time стала первой игрой, где графика позволила в полной мере оценить красоту дизайна уровней и персонажей. Все здесь блистает эстетическим лоском, которого предыдущим частям недостает.
Геймплей является развитием Tools of Destruction, но заимствует и ряд инноваций из Quest for Booty, например, телекинез Kinetic Tether, остающийся важным элементом снаряжения Рэтчета. А появления Кланка здесь, пожалуй, одни из наиболее креативных в серии. Вместе с возможностью летать и сражаться в космосе, а также слушать межгалактическое радио это создает ощущение новизны и наполненности контентом. Если вы хотите выбрать для себя лишь одну игру серии, то играть определенно стоит именно в A Crack in Time.
Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One (2011)
Локальный кооператив — именно в нем главная прелесть R&C: All 4 One. В этом командном шутере от третьего лица управляемые вами и вашими друзьями четверо главных персонажей серии – Рэтчет, Кланк, Капитан Кварк и Доктор Нефариус – путешествуют по красивым уровням с элементами платформинга.
Но особенность этого эксклюзива PS3 в том, что разработчики слишком сильно пытались сделать его похожим на мультик Pixar. Игра получилась красивой, но персонажи потеряли изрядную долю индивидуальности. Кварк остался без своего фирменного подбородка! Хорошая игра, но недостаточно ориентированная на целевую аудиторию серии, поэтому совершенно не запоминающаяся.
Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault (2012)
Full Frontal Assault для PS3 – еще одна игра серии Ratchet & Clank для тех, кому нравится играть с друзьями. Она объединяет типичный для большинства игр серии геймплей с жанром Tower Defense. Нечто подобное здорово удалось в Dungeon Defenders, но здесь получилось не так хорошо.
Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus (2013)
После бездушных и посредственных All 4 One и Full Frontal Assault серии требовался серьезный успех, чтобы сохранить свою актуальность. Несмотря на меньшие ресурсы и влияние в корпоративной структуре Sony, ребятам из Insomniac Games удалось сделать великолепную, пусть и небольшую игру для PS3.
Ее геймплей – типичный для серии R&C, но игроки получили гораздо больше свободы в перемещении по уровням благодаря джетпаку и антигравитационным ботинкам. Что неизбежно привело к появлению крутых сражений в воздухе.
Один из самых милых моментов в этой игре – наличие внутриигрового музея, посвященного серии и ее нескольким частям, вышедшим на тот момент. Предполагалось, что эта игра будет в серии последней, поэтому вся любовь, вложенная разработчиками в это приключение, буквально осязаема.
Ratchet & Clank: Before the Nexus (2013)
Возможно, этот бесконечный раннер и не лучше Going Mobile в плане креативности или сложности, но для современной аудитории он явно будет более привычным. По крайней мере вам не придется раскапывать свою старую Nokia, чтобы в него поиграть.
Он вышел в довесок к R&C: Into the Nexus, предоставляя игрокам возможность получить игровую валюту Раритан и перевести ее в консольную игру. Это было более чем достаточным оправданием провести здесь несколько часов, несмотря на наличие всего одной трассы.
Ratchet & Clank (2016)
После трехлетнего отдыха ломбакса и робота команда разработчиков была вновь призвана для создания игры в дополнение к новому анимационному фильму Ratchet & Clank. Такая ситуация – прямой путь к катастрофе. Но разработчикам чудом удалось сделать достойную игру.
Это ремейк первой части серии, адаптирующий ее сюжет для большего соответствия мультфильму и придающий геймплею такую кинематографичность, что временами вы вообще можете забыть, что играете в игру. Но хотя было очень здорово вновь увидеть места и события из самой первой части игры с прекрасной графикой PS4, из-за короткой кампании и серьезного недостатка инноваций эта игра не смогла стать великой.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart (2021)
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart – один из ключевых эксклюзивов для PlayStation 5, призванный продемонстрировать все особенности новой консоли, от сверхбыстрого SSD и мощного графического чипа до продвинутого контроллера с обратной тактильной связью.
Что касается содержания игры, то это привычный для серии 3D-платформер, в котором Рэтчет и Кланк, а также примкнувшая к ним девушка-ломбакс Ривет (на самом деле это версия Рэтчета из альтернативной вселенной) пытаются исправить катастрофу, вызванную доктором Нефариусом. Это очаровательное восьмичасовое приключение, полное шуток, перестрелок и зрелищных событий.
