7 activities to practise pronouns with kids

Through our teaching experiences, we sometimes face some situations when it becomes quite time consuming and difficult to teach kids how to use pronouns properly. There are some cases when students do not understand them because they have not studied this topic in their mother tongue at school, for example, personal pronouns ‘he/she’. On the other hand, some other cases have proven that children just don’t find pronouns ‘interesting’ or ‘funny’ enough to deal with. Taking these facts into consideration we have come up with some ideas and fun activities that you can use to practice pronouns in primary school making the process more entertaining.

Using “he” or “she” in short phrases or sentences

I suggest we start with ‘he/she’. Here you will need flashcards with different actions. Place the flashcards in front of your students and ask them the questions, like “Who is walking?”. Get them to give answers using “he/she”. Once they have practised these short phrases, then you can go on further and ask them to describe the pictures using personal and possessive pronouns. For example: “He is riding his bike”, “She is reading her book”, etc.

Introduce yourself

Get your students to introduce themselves and speak about their families using appropriate pronouns. If necessary, you can provide them with a sample.

I am your teacher. My name is Julie. I am from London. I live with my family — my husband and my two kids. My husband’s name is Mark. He is 32 years old. My daughter’s name is Annabelle. She is 2 years old. My son’s name is Brian. He is 1 year old. I love them very much.

Drawing/making flowers with pronouns

When you are done explaining the rules and introducing personal pronouns, you can ask your students to draw or make flowers with different pronouns indicating relatives’ or friends’ names the pronouns refer to. Here are some amazing examples that will definitely come in handy.

Replace the pictures with pronouns

Distribute short stories to your students with pictures in them. Ask your kids to read the story replacing pictures with appropriate pronouns. Here is one example.

Make up a story

Choose appropriate pictures that illustrate a lot of different things and people. Get your students to describe the picture or invent a short story using as many pronouns as possible.

There are 6 people in this picture. They are in the park. A girl is sitting under the tree. She is reading a book. It is a small book. On the left side, there is a small boy. He is playing with his ball. It is yellow. Next to the boy, there are three people. They are walking in the park.

Board games with pronouns

There are so many things that can be done with board games. Since this game is played in pairs and there is always competition, children never get bored. You can either create your own board games or download from the Internet. There are plenty of different board games on Pinterest.

Pronoun dice

The last but not the least is the activity called “Pronoun dice”. You can make the dices yourself. Get your students to work in pairs and to roll the dice. They have to make one sentence with the personal pronouns they have. To expand the game, you can also ask them to make one more sentence with the corresponding object pronouns ( I — me, you — you, he — him, she — her, etc).

Introduction

Our free, printable pronoun worksheets will give your child a simple introduction to personal pronouns.

Personal pronouns are words such as “I”, “you”, “her” and “they” which are used instead of the actual names of people or things. They are an essential part of the language – for example, consider this sentence:

“Bob put away his newspaper and he and Julie then began painting their house.”

In the absence of pronouns it would have to read something like:

“Bob put away Bob’s newspaper and Bob and Julie then began painting Bob and Julie’s house.”

As you can see, pronouns are used all the time, so it is important that children learn how to use them correctly!

The advantages of using the worksheets are as follows:

1. Handwriting practice: By tracing the pronouns in worksheets 1 and 2, and filling in the blanks in worksheet 4, your child will be having a mini handwriting lesson.
2. Letter combinations and language rules: The pronouns contain examples of several important facets of English spelling and pronunciation. Some examples include, the “th” sound in “them”, the “sh” sound in “she”, the need for a capital “I” in “I”, and the different spelling of “their” when it relates to ownership.

3. Practice with “he” and “she”: Some children, (especially, but not only those learning English as a second language), have a tendency to mix up the genders in simple words. Every elementary school teacher will have stories of children saying things like, “She hit me!” when they are clearly pointing to a boy. Practice in using pronouns correctly is important to eliminate such mistakes.

4. Practice with pronouns in context: In the 4th worksheet, the answers do not necessarily need to match those of the third worksheet – some other pronouns will also work. However, some answers are not possible, even though they might match the picture, because of the sentence structure.

For example, take the second last question which features a picture of a boy and the sentence, “_______ is standing up.” If your child chooses, “You”, or “I” you will have an opportunity to discuss with them how the presence of “is” means that neither of these two words can be used.

5. Introduction to the concept of pronouns: The concept of a pronoun is harder to grasp than that of a noun or a verb, so don’t be put off if your child struggles with it. At this stage, it is simply good that they have experienced some introductory exposure to this class of words – it will stand them in good stead for grammar lessons at school in the years to come.

If your child finds these pronoun worksheets too advanced, do not fret. The most important thing for young children when it comes to reading is that they enjoy it!

So if your child is not having fun, why not play a board game with them instead. Monopoly is an all time classic and is great fun for everyone, but it also contains a wealth of learning opportunities – so is a perfect win/win!

5 Types/Kinds of Pronoun for kids

There are 5 types of Pronoun in English grammar.

1. Personal pronouns for kids

Those pronouns are used in place of the subject or object of the sentence. Personal pronoun describes the person speaking ( I, me, we, us ), the person spoken to (you), or the person or thing spoken about ( he, she, it, they, hi, her, them ).

2. Reflexive Pronouns for kids

The pronouns – myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, themselves, behave like objects to verbs, but they refer to the same person as the subjects to the verbs. These pronoun are called Reflexive Pronouns.

3. Possessive Pronouns for kids

Possessive Pronouns are those pronouns that indicate Possession or Relationship.

Pronouns

After nouns, pronouns is the next major grammatical category in the English language.

What is a pronoun? A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun. We use a pronoun so that a noun need not be repeated. For example,

Susie is a fashionable girl. She wears trendy clothes.

She in the second sentence is a pronoun. We use She so that the name of the girl, Susie, need not be repeated in the second sentence. If we did not use the pronoun, the sentences would be as follows:

Susie is a fashionable girl. Susie wears trendy clothes.

Which is better?

Of course, the first one. Using pronouns appropriately is absolutely necessary in speaking and writing grammatically correct English.

Examples of pronouns are you, I, he, she, it, we, they, anyone, everyone, himself, myself, nobody, yourself, who.

Let us do some exercises to see whether you have understood the concept of pronouns.

Identify the pronouns in the following sentences.

1. Mr. Lee bought a house after he had saved enough money.

2. Sally went back to her house.

3. The students who are taking the examination should wait here.

4. Mr. and Mrs. Kelly may not attend the party as they are on vacation right now.

5. I am angry with myself for screaming at you.

Did you identify the pronouns?

In the first sentence, he is the pronoun, since it is used in the place of Mr. Lee.

In the second sentence, her is the pronoun, since it is used in the place of Sally.

In the third sentence, who is the pronoun, since it is used to refer to the students.

In the fourth sentences, they are the pronoun, as it is used to refer to Mr. and Mrs. Kelly.

In the fifth sentence, myself is the pronoun, since it is used to refer to I.

A set of 15 different bags to play games with using possessive pronouns:

I pass out one set of cards to all of the students in the group. These I place face up and tell the students the bags that are in front of them are their bags. Then, I go through a second set asking ‘whose bag is this?’ just to make sure we’re all on the same page. (If you have a small group you can use the ‘just people cards’ as group members and assign bags to them.)

Then I place the second set face down and play bingo. I have one student draw a card and ask the rest of the group ‘Whose bag is this?’ The other students try to guess using possessive pronouns. Whoever guesses correctly gets to draw the next card.

There are a few other games you can play with the same technique of giving one set to the students and playing a game with a second or third set.
