Moment’s MagSafe accessories review: a highlight of the versatility of iPhone 12

Originally announced shortly after the release of the iPhone 12, Moment’s MagSafe-enabled line of photography-oriented mounts is finally shipping, and they are worth the wait.

There are several parts of the Moment M(Force) MagSafe system. Moment offers a wall mount, a car vent mount, a cold shoe mount, a tripod mount, a tripod cold shoe mount, a portrait/landscape tripod cold shoe mount, then a multi-threaded mount. Not to mention several different cases.

We took a look at the wall mount, the portrait/landscape tripod with a cold shoe, the cold shoe mount, and the landscape tripod.

All of Moment’s gear is similar in design to one another, just with different functionality. They all have a stainless steel disc for attaching to the iPhone, with a matte black finish.

Inside is Moment’s (M)Force magnet array that offers a strong connection behind a soft rubberized surface. All also have the Moment wordmark etched on the side.

Between the magnets’ strength and the stainless steel that aids in directing the magnetic field towards the back of your iPhone, it holds onto mounted devices very strongly. We never felt our iPhone was going anywhere when using any of these mounts.

The quality of construction is top-notch, and they mesh well with the rest of the Moment ecosystem. The steel that makes up the MagSafe mounts feels just like the metal on the company’s premium lenses.

That said, let’s look at each of them a bit closer.

Moment’s MagSafe cases

There are two different styles of Moment’s MagSafe-enabled cases. One is the standard case, made from a thicker black material with either walnut or canvas inlaid on the back.

Then there is the «thin» case which lives true to its name. The thin case is available in several different colors, such as green, blue, and yellow.

These are the same cases we took a look at back at the iPhone 12 launch, but they now have the requisite MagSafe magnets embedded in them. The inside of the cases has a soft microfiber lining and a circle to denote their MagSafe compatibility.

Our favorite feature here is that the ring that encompasses the camera module can be removed. Moment includes an alternate ring that includes the bayonet feature to mount its signature lenses to your phone.

If you don’t use their lenses, stick with the plain ring. If you do, swap in the complementary lens mount, and you’re good to go.

Car vent mount

Not long after the iPhone 12 line debuted, Belkin released its Car Vent Mount Pro, which Apple showed off on-stage. We reviewed it at launch and found it was good, but didn’t up to its self-bestowed «pro» monicker.

Moment takes an entirely different approach from Belkin, with its design coming in far smaller and with a more premium feel.

Belkin’s is all plastic and feels cheaper, whereas Moment is made from metal. Moment also has that matte black finish which is much more appealing in our car — though we did ponder whether it would get exceedingly hot in the sun-heavy summer months.

Belkin does offer an adjustable back, however, which likely makes it more versatile. Moment has a fixed vent clip, and it holds the iPhone very close to the vent.

This leaves little wiggle room for the fit. It was too tight for our Jeep in some places, but fortunately, it fit next to our driver’s seat perfectly.

The vent clip on Moment’s mount is wider than normal, and this is by design.

Moment tells us that they’ve had people break their vents with smaller clips. Expanding the clip size disperses the direct pressure more evenly and prevents any chance of breaking your vent when setting it up.

One last unique piece of functionality is an extra ring around the back. This rear-facing ring sticks out just about the width of your standard Lightning cable.

The idea is that you can wrap your cable around and it will hold it in place. It isn’t the most elegant solution for cable management, but it works.

While there may be fit issues for some cars, if it fits, this is a far better solution than Belkin’s Vent Mount Pro.

Wall mount

The wall mount is a versatile option that expands outside of photography and the car. This mount has an adhesive on the back to be attached to a cabinet, a wall, a nightstand, or your desk.

In the center is a recessed screw hole so that you can screw this into place instead of using the adhesive. It is entirely up to you which method you use to attach it to a surface.

Cold shoe mount

A «cold shoe» is a non-powered version of a «hot shoe,» a mount typically found on the top of cameras to attach a flash. On a camera, there are usually connectors that allow the device to talk directly to an attached accessory.

Moment’s «cold shoe» is the same physical mount for non-connected accessories. Mics, lights, and other accessories can be connected to your iPhone this way.

The cold shoe mount is a very versatile way to attach accessories to your iPhone when shooting handheld, such as when vlogging at night. You can hold your iPhone with a LumaCube on top, a ring light, or a mini directional mic.

The cold shoe mount itself is adjustable to allow for various sizes of phones. Just loosen the thumbscrew on the back, move it to the appropriate distance, and tighten it back down.

Many of those accessories have mounting solutions of their own, but they are complicated, bulky, and not ideal. MagSafe and Moment combined is a far more elegant solution.

Moment’s various tripod mounts

We checked out two different Moment tripod mounts — a standard landscape mount with a cold shoe mount on top and an extended one that works in both portrait and landscape orientations.

The tripod mount has the standard 1/4″-20 thread to connect to most tripods available. The model that works in portrait has a much longer tripod connector that accommodates the height of the phone.

When in portrait mode, the cold shoe needs to rotate around to the side rather than being in line with the tripod.

There’s one additional model available without the cold shoe, but you might as well pick up the cold shoe-equipped model.

A game-changer for mobile creators

There’s no other way of putting this — these mounts, combined with Moment’s cases, are a game-changer for mobile creators. They unlock so much more potential for mobile photography and videography than we’d otherwise have.

Gone are those shaky, gimmicky, cheap clips that so many accessories would include. They’d get in the way, be hard to put on or to take off, and were usually just junk.

MagSafe allows any accessory to magnetically snap directly to the back without any fuss. Now, it’s easier than ever to snap your iPhone directly to your favorite tripod.

We use the Peak Design Travel Tripod, and Moment’s adapter is now going to forever be included in our gear bag right next to it.

Our other favorite use case thus far is to connect our iPhone via MagSafe to our ShoulderPod rig. We can connect a mic pack to the right side, a LumeCube light to the top of the Moment mount, and snap our iPhone in place any time we go to shoot.

There is nothing better than tech that just works. The satisfying joy that comes with transferring files via AirDrop, the relief when a new pair of wireless earbuds automatically pop up on a phone screen and ask to be connected without opening the Bluetooth settings. These moments are still rare, but when they happen it feels like I’m actually living in the future promised to me. One of seamless connection and endless possibilities.

And the iPhone’s MagSafe (not to be confused with the old MacBook MagSafe, RIP), it just works.

Even with a metal and glass Moment lens attached, my iPhone stayed firmly attached to the mount.

Moment MagSafe accessories

Moment’s line of MagSafe accessories lets you attach your iPhone 12 or 12 Pro to a wide variety of things, including a tripod or other camera gear. They make it easy to attach or remove your phone thanks to their use of strong magnets.

Apple’s own MagSafe wallet accessory notoriously did not provide enough strength to stay attached to the back of the iPhone when taking the device out of a pocket. And if you have used the MagSafe charger, you might think these magnets are not strong enough to hold your device on a tripod out in front of you. But Moment developed its (M)Force magnet array that claims to use “custom tuned magnets” with a “grippy backer pad” for extra strength to boost the holding power of Apple’s base system.

I stored these MagSafe mounts on the side of a metal filing cabinet.

When I received these mounts, I attached them to the outside of my metal filing cabinet for safekeeping and was pleasantly surprised at just how hard it was to pull them off the side of the cabinet when I went to use them. And in my testing, my phone remained glued to the mounts no matter what they were mounted to. Pulling the phone off of these mounts was easy, too; with a bit of a twist the device disengages.

Even on gravel roads, my iPhone 12 Pro stayed firmly attached to Moment’s car vent MagSafe mount.

Moment currently offers a sticky wall mount, a car vent mount, a cold shoe mount, a cold shoe and ¼” thread mount in both portrait and landscape orientations, a ¼” thread mount, and a multi-threaded mount. The pucks themselves are stainless steel disks with a matte finish. They are just the right amount of heavy: they feel durable and ready to be put into action while maintaining an extremely strong magnetic connection to the iPhone 12 Pro I was using.

The best part about using these mounts, and MagSafe at large, is the ease in quickly being able to put your phone on and pull it off of various accessories. I’m used to using mounts that grip the sides of my phone. Mounting my phone to a tripod, for example, meant having to attach it to the mount first, which is a two-step process: first the phone goes into the mount, then you have to close the mount’s sides to hold the phone. None of this process seemed to be too much of a problem until I didn’t have to do it anymore.

Being able to seamlessly pull my phone off of any tripod, even with a light or mic attached via a cold shoe, is the time-saving, hassle-free experience I didn’t know I needed. I quite literally toss my phone on the puck and I’m ready to go. And it feels really good knowing I could answer the phone mid-take without putting a whole rig up to my ear with it.

Moment is best known for its line of lenses designed for iPhones, but the company also makes all kinds of other accessories that are designed to improve the iPhone experience. With the launch of MagSafe, Moment designed ‌MagSafe‌ friendly cases and accessories that are useful for those who want to use Moment lenses or photography equipment like tripods with their iPhones.

Moment’s MagSafe-Compatible iPhone 13 Cases

As a standard ‌MagSafe‌ case, Moment’s cases are not my favorite. There is a texture to the case, but it is not as grippy and easy to hold as Apple’s own silicone cases and I’m continually worried that it might slip out of my hand.

There is a nice microfiber lining inside, along with protection for the camera area, bottom ports, and a lip for keeping the display safe. Moment says the cases offer six-foot drop protection, and while I’m not going to toss my ‌iPhone‌ on the ground to test it out, that seems about right given the protective features and the case thickness.

Volume and power buttons are covered but are still easy to press, and the mute button and all ports remain accessible. I didn’t have a problem using this case with wireless chargers, both Qi and ‌MagSafe‌. There are wrist strap attachment points at the bottom if you want to add a wrist strap for an extra grip when taking photos.

If you have the case and the lens mount, you basically just need to pop out the standard lens bracket that comes with the case and the pop in the lens mount version. All of the built-in cameras work fine with the lens mount in place, and you can screw in Moment’s lenses.

Moment makes a fisheye lens, a wide-angle lens, a telephoto lens, a macro lens, and an anamorphic lens, and all of the M-series lenses work with the case and the mount. It’s worth noting that Moment lenses are designed to be used with the wide-angle camera and will block the telephoto lens and the ultra wide lens. This is my first choice case if you have Moment lenses, but I still prefer other ‌MagSafe‌ cases like Apple’s if you don’t.

Car Vent Mount

In my experience, it worked fine, and the mount stayed attached to my ‌iPhone‌ during multiple car rides, even going over bumps and with sudden stops. I’ve tried a few other magnetic mounts, and I think that Moment’s version has one of the strongest magnets that I’ve encountered to date. There is no charging, though, so this is strictly for mounting for maps usage and other in-car purposes.

Wall Mount

It’s designed to allow you to attach your ‌iPhone‌ to any surface where the mount is stuck, so you can attach it to a wall in the kitchen for viewing recipes, or in an office for FaceTime and other purposes. Using the mount is as simple as peeling off the 3M adhesive and sticking it against a flat surface and then attaching your ‌iPhone‌ to the magnet, which is super strong.

I didn’t have an issue with the adhesive in the month that I tested these accessories, but I am concerned about its long term viability. Adhesive can sometimes fail and this mount is relatively heavy, so I am concerned that it could just slip off the wall at some point.

To be clear, that hasn’t happened to me, but I’d definitely recommend using the wall mount with a case so should it come unattached from the wall, your ‌iPhone‌ won’t suffer damage from a high fall. If you need to reposition the mount, you can do so with the extra adhesive pad that’s included. I didn’t have wall damage removing it, but it’s going to vary based on wall material.

Multi-Threaded Mount

I tested it with a tripod, and it screwed right in. On the side opposite the threads, there’s a magnetic plate that attaches to a ‌MagSafe‌ ‌iPhone‌. As with ‌MagSafe‌’s other mounts, the magnet is surprisingly strong and I feel confident that my iPhone 13 Pro Max is going to stay secured in place even with a decent amount of movement.

All of the attachment points for this accessory are at the back, and I would have preferred to have one or two connection points on the side, which would make this Multi-Threaded Mount even more versatile.

This is definitely one of Moment’s most versatile ‌MagSafe‌ accessories and it’s a solid choice if you have a tripod you want to use your ‌iPhone‌ with or another similar accessory that uses one of the standard mount sizes.

Tripod Mount

There’s basically a round magnetic pad that attaches to the ‌iPhone‌ and an arm that can be screwed on to any tripod or handle that you already have, making it a useful way to add ‌MagSafe‌ compatibility to your photography accessories. You can use the Tripod Mount in either portrait or landscape mode, and make subtle adjustments to the angle by just rotating the ‌iPhone‌ on the magnetic attachment. It’s simple and effective.

Prior to ‌MagSafe‌ I used a clamp mount accessory to attach my ‌iPhone‌ to a tripod, but Moment’s ‌MagSafe‌ tripod mount is much quicker and easier to use in comparison for portrait shots, long exposure shots, and other situations where a tripod is useful.

Cold Shoe Mount

The magnetic pad attaches to the ‌iPhone‌ and then there’s an adjustable cold shoe mount at the back. A thumbscrew can be used to lock the cold shoe arm in the position that you want for attaching accessories. This is a great option if you want to add a light or microphone while using your ‌iPhone‌ in handheld mode.

Bottom Line

Having tested quite a few ‌MagSafe‌ accessories, I was impressed with the magnet strength that Moment has achieved. For all of these mounts, my ‌iPhone 13 Pro‌ Max felt well-secured and I was not worried about it detaching or coming loose when mounted in the car, on a tripod, or on the wall.

I think most people looking for MagSafe-compatible accessories are going to be satisfied with Moment’s lineup given the magnetic strength and the affordable price points. As for the cases, I’d recommend them if you need something to use with the Moment lenses that you own.

All of these accessories work with Moment lenses when used with Moment’s cases and case mounts, but I do want to point out that you won’t want to pick up these accessories if you have Moment lenses and intend to use them with an iPhone 12 mini or iPhone 13 mini. You can’t use these accessories and a Moment Lens at the same time on one of Apple’s smallest iPhones because of space constraints.

Review: Belkin’s Car Vent Mount PRO Offers Easy MagSafe Mounting

Belkin, known for the accessories that it makes for Apple’s devices, recently announced its first MagSafe products, the Boost Charge Pro MagSafe 3-in-1 Wireless Charger and the Car Vent PRO. The wireless charger isn’t out just yet, but the Belkin Car Vent Mount PRO with MagSafe has launched.

The accessory is a simple magnet-based mount that attaches to MagSafe devices that include the iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max, adhering to the MagSafe magnet built into those devices. It also works with MagSafe cases attached to iPhone 12 models.

I’m not entirely sure why the Car Vent PRO has «Pro» attached to its name because it’s a fairly simple mount. It’s made from a lightweight plastic material that’s designed to look like aluminum with a softer material on the mount portion of the accessory to ensure an attached iPhone isn’t scratched or otherwise damaged.

The lightweight design is nice because it’s not putting unnecessary weight on the car’s vents. There’s a silicone prong on the back of the Car Vent PRO that grabs right into a car’s vents, with about an inch and a half space between the vents and the front of the mount. The grip is tight enough that I’m confident it’s not going to come loose from the vent.

I’m not often in the car these days so I haven’t been able to do extensive terrain testing on how well the magnetic connection works. With my iPhone attached, if I give the mount a good shake I can dislodge my iPhone, but I do have to put a decent amount of effort into it.

I suspect that there are situations where a huge bump could dislodge the iPhone from the mount, but for day to day smoother driving, it feels well-adhered. I took several trips on a fairly bumpy road and had no problems with the magnetic connection with an iPhone 12 or a heavier iPhone 12 Pro Max even at fast speeds and during turns.

While there’s no built-in charging, you can attach the Vent PRO to an in-car Lightning cable if you already have that setup, which makes it more useful. There is a spot for routing a cable around the back if you do want to use it with a charger. My car’s charging ports are located in the center console under a lid, so it’s not a convenient setup for my situation and I wasn’t able to test it with a cable attached.

The Car Vent PRO can be used in either portrait or landscape mode with an attached iPhone, so depending on your in-car setup and how you prefer Maps to look, you can get it working the way that you like. To facilitate use in either orientation, the Car Vent PRO itself rotates thanks to an adjustable ball joint that can also change the angle of the phone as needed.

Compared to other mounting options, it’s simple because it requires no extra hardware or magnets, and it’s basically the only MagSafe mounting option at the moment. If you need a mount for the car and have an iPhone 12, Belkin’s option is worth checking out.

Belkin’s new car mount is the first official third-party MagSafe mount to start shipping, but with limited functionality, it isn’t quite as «pro» as we were hoping it was.

Apple’s new MagSafe technology has opened up the floodgates to a whole new ecosystem of accessories that connect to or charge iPhone 12. As the accessory world was largely surprised by MagSafe, no accessories were ready to go with the launch of iPhone 12, sans a few select Apple partners.

Otterbox debuted a line of MagSafe-enabled cases, Scosche launched a few adapters for Apple’s MagSafe charger, and Belkin debuted the Car Vent Mount Pro as well as a docking station.

Belkin’s MagSafe docking station is still not shipping quite yet, but its car mount has finally started shipping to customers after Apple took the wraps off on stage at the Steve Jobs Theater.

Finally something new for the car

Car vent mounts are a pretty boring accessory category. You’ve got the typical clips that hold the phone on the sides, and you have ones that are magnetic but require you to add a shim or a sticker to the back of your device.

Thanks to MagSafe, we now have a new option that is better than anything we’ve had before. The magnetic ones we had before always required the shims, and the clips could be a pain to hold your phone or were bulky.

When relying on MagSafe, no additional shim or sticker is required, and it couldn’t be easier to place or remove your phone.

It is finally something new that is simple and reliable. We’d still say it is a fairly unexciting accessory, but one we use frequently enough to care about.

Belkin’s MagSafe car mount

A car mount only has to do a few things well, and Belkin’s offering is functionally solid, but there are a few ways it falls short.

When we first saw Belkin’s MagSafe mount, we thought it was made of metal. It has a matte silver finish that looked just like anodized aluminum.

That’s absolutely by design, but does leave us disappointed when we pick it up and feel the light and warm plastic.

The magnetic front panel of the mount attaches to the back on a ball head to rotate to different angles and clips onto the vent of your car. Unlike small magnetic car mounts, the large size of the mount blocks your phone from getting overheated when your car’s heating is on.

Belkin’s MagSafe mount is quite large, which is due purely to the design of MagSafe itself. MagSafe mounts use two parts — a circular array of magnets in the center of the phone and a vertical line of magnets towards the bottom, which is used for alignment.

If the mount only used the circle, it would be possible for your phone to rotate inadvertently.

Between the circle and the alignment magnet, it makes the whole ordeal on the large size, but it is still hidden entirely when your phone is connected.

The grip is strong and held in place well on our Jeep’s driver-side air vents. The front is covered in silicone, which adds a bit of passive grip to your phone. Inset in the silicone is a circle and line to represent where the MagSafe magnets are located.

Should you buy Belkin’s Car Vent Mount Pro?

If you want a MagSafe car mount, Belkin is currently your only true option. Over time, that will change as other manufacturers release their designs.

While Belkin’s mount does what it says it will do, we were unimpressed with the quality. The plastic body feels rather cheap to the touch, despite the sleek metal-like appearance.

There’s also something funky going on with the internal magnets. As we bring our phone towards the charger, there is a distinctive clicking that sounds like a piece of thin plastic flexing back and forth, as if the magnets are starting to engage.

Functionally there is nothing wrong with that, but it kills the «pro» moniker.

Unlike a tablet or computer, it is hard to infer what would make a car mount rated for «pros,» but based on our time testing it, this doesn’t quite make the mark.

The Car Vet Mount Pro works for now, but we are very much looking forward to a nicer model that could also include support for charging.

I’m looking at the Spigen 13 Mag Armor, because it looks sleek as hell, but I read that the magnets for that case is very weak.

I am VERY interested in your query too. I live in Rome where we have more bumps and potholes than flat surfaces

Also would be interested in undressing which power source would be recommended from the cigarette lighter socket to get a good/fast charge.

Belkin Car Mount. I have driven through potholes, over mountains and hills. Never dropped iPhone 12 pro max once.

yes. it slides into the car vent (and at this point it’s already pretty sturdy) and then you have the additional option of clamping it down.

here’s the clamping down mechanism i’m taking about (you twist it to clamp it down). very sturdy

there’s also a dashboard/windshield version if you prefer that.

I got this case by Pitaka. The magnetic is so strong I can leave it on the fridge with my 13 PM in it. Now that’s with the camera on the edge as it’ll lift the case off the fridge too much. I use with the Apple’s magsafe charger and a mount and car charger from Amazon.

ProClip is great, I have this one installed in my car but you can enter your car to find a specific mount that would fit yours on the website.

I bought a magnetic mount that I glued on top of the ProClip, ProClip sells phone holders too though. Will have to replace the magnetic mount for the iPhone 13 but this setup has been rock solid for me for years.

Crash testing popular MagSafe car vent mounts for iPhone 12 and iPhone 13

Now that both the iPhone 12 lineup and the newly-released iPhone 13 lineup support MagSafe, in-car mounts using the technology have risen in popularity. We took four of the most popular ones and subjected them to an impact test to see which ones held our phones safe.

When editor Mike Wuerthele was in a relatively low-speed crash, his iPhone 11 in a MagSafe case designed to add the feature to the older device sprung free. Given that failure, we decided to test the feature with iPhones that have full MagSafe support, with a series of dashboard MagSafe adapters that clip onto a vent.

For this test, we simulated a low-speed car crash to demonstrate how securely the mounts magnetically hold our iPhone over bumps, hard stops, and minor impacts.

Our testing setup

To run our test, we needed two components.

We had to first create a rig that would hold our car vent mounts that we could run down a ramp at controlled speeds. To accomplish this, we attached a replacement car air vent to two pieces of wood that we mounted to a miniature skateboard. It needed to be strong itself to withstand the expected impacts.

Our ramp was made from a sheet of metal roofing. Its ridges provided a straight track for our rig so that it would roll down the ramp without veering over an edge or swerving too much side-to-side. It was elevated into the air for a final height of around three feet, giving it an incline of roughly 16 degrees.

The crash stop was a piece of reinforced plywood. It was set perpendicular to the ramp and held in place by sand.

Combining all the information about the assembly, including height, ramp length, ramp angle, and the rig’s weight, an approximation of the final velocity at the point of impact can be calculated.

Given the existing setup, the iPhone 13 Pro Max on each of the MagSafe-compatible mounts came to a sudden stop at just under 10 miles per hour.

Our iPhone 13 Pro Max was ensconced in a MagSafe case and had a glass screen protector applied. We also covered the rough grip tape of the skateboard with softer gaff tape.

Participants

Entering our testing arena are four of the most popular MagSafe-compatible car mounts out there. All connect to the vents in your vehicle and offer similar magnetic connections.

Belkin’s Vent Mount Pro is the only Apple-certified MagSafe car mount. It uses Apple’s own MagSafe component, unlike others that had to clone their own magnetic attachment point.

The ESR HaloLock car mount was included in the roundup. This one has an additional arm under it that helps steady the entire mount, clipped to the air vent. It also has a built-in Qi wireless charger to power your phone up while you are driving and running wireless CarPlay.

Mophie’s Snap vent mount was tested which works not only with MagSafe phones but any phone using the company’s Snap Adapter as well.

Finally, there is the latest iOttie Velox air vent mount. This one too can charge your phone via the non-removable USB-C cable.

Results

After we ran our tests, we found that three of the four held strong upon impact. Belkin, ESR, and iOttie all refused to let go of our iPhone 13 Pro Max. We tested each of them multiple times and these always kept our phone mounted.

Only the Mophie Snap mount let our iPhone fly. You can see it for yourself in our video above as the impact shook our phone free, sending it into the air. Good thing we had that case and screen protector applied.

Evaluating these results is a different matter. Many variables go into whether these same mounts will hold up for you. It depends on your vents, if the mounts had been starting to wiggle free from frequent use, how hard your impact is, what case (if any) that you’re using, and more.

With the same phone, same vent, and same impact, we can conclusively say that iOttie, ESR, and Belkin all were stronger and more supportive.

That said, if you look just at crash-free daily use, all four of these will perform nearly identically. Conversely, in a high-speed impact, they will all surely let your phone fall.

They’re still just relatively low-strength magnets after all.

Secondly, this is super slow. 9.5 MPH whereas most car crashes occur at 25 MPH. So even if this has a «higher g value» at 10 MPH, it would show it could withstand higher speeds in an actual accident.

Really, the point here is which one is strongest. We put them through the same test to see which one(s) would hold on. It isn’t a perfect recreation of a car accident but we can conclusively say which ones are stronger than which other ones.

Belkin’s MagSafe Car Vent Mount for iPhone 12 Models Now Available to Order From Apple

The mount has a built-in clip that attaches to a vent in a vehicle, and MagSafe allows an iPhone 12 model to be magnetically attached with ease. An integrated ball joint allows the iPhone to be flipped from portrait to landscape with one hand. The mount has a slim profile with cable management on the back for storing a Lightning cable, but note that the mount itself does not function as a charging pad.

The Car Vent Mount PRO is not yet available to order through Belkin’s own website, and we’re still waiting on its BOOST↑CHARGE PRO 3-in-1 Wireless Charger with MagSafe, which is expected to be available in «winter 2020.»

MagSafe is a new feature on all iPhone 12 models that allows for magnetic accessories to be attached to the back of the devices.

So finally received my third-party knockoff of MagSafe Charger ordered from Aliexpress. My setup is a magnet mount which I had placed the Apple MagSafe charger on (see photo) and then mounted my 12 ProMax with leather case to it. This worked well and was very secure when driving.

Wanted to try a knockoff and if worked planned to snip the cord and just leave the charging puck on the magnet. The knockoff I received looked good initially including the packaging (see collage photo). The charger itself did not have the quality feel of the original Apple. The back housing on the Apple had a quality metallic feel while the knockoff was more of a plasticky feel. Putting it on the magnet mount the knockoff did not have the snap to the mount like the original Apple charger. Mounting the phone with leather case onto the charger did not have a solid lock like the Apple did. It did hold the phone but did not snap in place solidly. On the road it did hold up the phone through normal traffic and mild to moderate bumps. Pulling the phone off the charger however most of the time would pull the knockoff charger off the magnet mount as well. This was remedied by putting one of the steel plates on the back of the charger and it was not pulled off the magnet mount after that. Overall I probably won’t be using this for what I intended to do with it.

As for the charging, will have to update this later as I just realized I don’t have a USB C charger to connect it to lol.

***EDIT*** tried the knockoff connected to a USB C charger and indeed it gives the charging animation.

I bought one of the «rounded rectangle» charger mounts from an eBay seller in California to avoid the delay of shipping from China, though a bit of a shipping issue pretty much cancelled that out. https://www.ebay.com/itm/402570561910 is the exact auction, for reference.

The box is printed with the images that you see all over the product pages. It shows it in silver/white and black/black, just as the product pages do. The other images that you see on every product page are on the other sides of the box as well.

Once you open it, you can see that it’s actually black/gray, as others have found. It also includes a USB-A to USB-C cable, telescoping suction mount, and vent clip mount. I’ve never used a vent clip, but this one seems decent. It has a hook on the back of the clip, and a pretty strong spring, so I would expect it to hold fairly well. It has rubber/silicone on the back side to provide some friction/protection against the dash surface too. I’m currently using the suction mount on my work desk. I’d probably sum it up as «works as described» but I’ll admit that the cantilever-ish design works much better than the suction mount included with my iBolt ChargeDock. The pieces connect via a standard 17mm «Garmin» ball mount, so there are infinite ways you could mount this in your car.

As for the actual charger/mount. The magnets hold my 12 Pro in the Apple leather case quite well. It does have the orientation magnets below the ring also, though it’s still fairly easy to rotate the phone. I popped it open and it uses fairly thick magnets (probably at least 5mm thick), not super-thin ones like the stickers used to MagSafe-ify existing cases. It gives a satisfying thunk when my phone snaps onto it. I held the charger by the ball mount and shook it around and my iPhone wouldn’t fall off. If I swung my arm down into the palm of my other hand, the shock of the impact would cause the iPhone to come off. I wouldn’t trust this as the only method of securing the phone on my motorcycle, but I’d expect it to stay put even over some pretty rough roads in my car.

I tested the charging with a RAVPower 45W USB-C PD charger, a couple different USB-A QC 3.0 chargers, and an old-fashioned 5V 2.4A USB power block. I bought one of those cross-shaped USB ammeters a couple years ago, rated up to 15V and 30W per the description. With that tester, I never saw it go above 9V or

10W. Wireless chargers are usually around 75% efficient, which matches up with this only charging at the old 7.5W, not the new MagSafe 15W.

EDIT: The 1-3W fluctuation might be an issue with the charger trying to negotiate the higher charge rate with the iPhone (or something like that). I held my XS up to the charger and it went to 7.5W right away. I put it down and put the 12 on the charger, and it went back to the 1-3W bouncing. I could switch back and forth between the phones as much as I wanted and it would go to those charge rates like clockwork.

This charger does show the «ring» charging animation. It seems to show at any charger voltage above the standard 5V, regardless of the actual wattage. It showed even with the bouncing 1-3W output, but not with the 5V/5W charging. None of my old Qi chargers, even the one that I added a magnet ring to, show the animation, so I’m not entirely sure what triggers the display. I don’t yet have an official Apple MagSafe charger for comparison.

In posting these pics here, I noticed that the mount’s spec sheet only lists 12V input/output as hitting 15W output. All of the chargers I tested are rated for 12V and high enough amperage, but it doesn’t seem to actually work at 15W (at least not through my USB meters).

Summary: This is a decent magnetic mount with wireless charging built in. I wouldn’t expect it to actually do 15W charging, and you may even have trouble getting 7.5W out of it.

After some more testing, I believe the 1-3W power fluctuation is due to the charger trying to negotiate the higher charge rate with the iPhone 12.

There are two LEDs on the charger board, though the housing doesn’t really expose them. You can see the light leaking out from around the USB-C port though. The red LED is on in standby mode, and the blue LED comes on when it’s in (fast?) charge mode. When I put my 12 on the charger, the blue LED comes on and the power seems to go up from

3W. 5 seconds after it starts, the blue LED turns off and the power drops. It immediately turns back on and repeats, indefinitely. It seems like something is resetting after a few seconds, every time.

When I put my XS on the charger, it builds up to 7.5W and stays there, as expected. It doesn’t seem to be a general failure with the charger, just between the charger and the 12.

If the charging worked properly on this, I would be very happy with it. The gloss plastic seems a little cheap, but it’s acceptable. I’m rather happy with the suction-arm mount, and the physical aspect of the magnetic mount. I noticed that the bottom of the ball socket is rubberized, to help hold it in place, which might be the missing link from other mounts that people have found to droop over time.

I’ve got the similar TIMESS unit being delivered tomorrow. I’m hoping that will end up being a more functional, but otherwise «identical», charging mount.

I also got the RAVPower «black MagSafe» charger for Christmas. It doesn’t trigger the charging animation and I haven’t been able to get more than 7.5W out of it. It seems to be a plain old Qi charger with magnets. The included power brick also doesn’t seem to power my Apple MagSafe puck to the full 15W either. I tried the RAVPower puck with my 45W PD charger (which properly powers my official MagSafe to 15W) as well and still got the low output. The brick and the puck both seem to be lacking. I prefer its looks over the Apple one, but it simply doesn’t work like the Apple one, so I’m returning it.
