I think «good» here is more US than UK (although you do hear it here too). To my mind «good» is wrong because it is an adjective, and you don’t really mean «I am good» eg «I am a good person» but rather «I am well» or «I am fine», so you need an adverb.

I think that this US usage is really extending the adjective «good» and making it into an adverb (since I´m sure that everyone is not walking around suggesting that they are little angels )

The grammatically correct word is «well». The most common word is «good».
Antonio has given some good examples of how we answer informally. I’m not sure what he means by «lots». I have no idea where that came from. Maybe he meant that there are lots of ways to say it.

Some more informal answers could be:

I’m A-okay.
I’m peachy.
I’m hangin’.
I’m doin’ good, (fine).

In very formal situations I would only say:
Fine, thank you. And you?
I’m just fine. How are you?
You say this even if you feel terrible, because this is not an exchange of information, it is just a polite exchange of pleasant words.

In business relationships any positive response is usually expected.
I usually say
Great, how about you?»
Super, how about you?»

With friends you can give a truthful response if you want to start a conversation:
Terrible, nothing’s going right.
Couldn’t get any better. I just got a new job.
So, so. I’m still trying to get Jim to go out with me.
Then ask, «What’s up with you?» or «How about you?»

«Good» is not wrong because it is an adjective. What is needed to complete «I am ____» is indeed an adjective (which would then function as a «predicate adjective»), and to put an adverb there would be incorrect. If «good» is incorrect, it is incorrect not because it is an adjective, but because it is the wrong adjective.

«Well», which can be used here, is not an adverb, but instead is an adjective meaning «in good health». It is the oldest and most formal word to use in this context.

«Fine» (which is also an adjective) is here used as a contracted form of «in fine health» or «in fine spirits». Considered literally from their standard and traditional meanings, «fine» and «good» are equally correct (or incorrect) here. One may find «fine» accepted and «good» rejected not because of the literal meanings of the words, but because one hears «fine» mroe often.

Fine is both an adjective and an adverb, and that is why it is accepted as correct, not because fine is heard more often than good and is hence accepted. I used to think it was just an adjective as well, but then I checked the dictionary!

I have always been taught never to say ‘I am good’. In fact, about a month ago a girl in my Latin class had responded ‘I am good, thank you’ when our wonderfully pedantic teacher asked her how she was. When I came into the class, he asked me the same question to which I replied ‘I am fine, thank you’. He then said to me «Oh, I am so glad that you did not use that word ‘good'» to which I said in total horror «Sir, what do you take me for?!»

Quite simply, I would think good is unaccepted by pedants on both sides of the Atlantic, but it is perhaps more widely accepted in the US simply because it is more frequently used (although that is a bit of a guess )

I don’t necessarily disagree with the above but it is simply a different, and abstract (as is mine), way of analysing the grammar.

In my analysis above «to be» can take an adjective or an adverb. In «to be well» «to be» is not being used as a copular verb (as it is in most instances) but has a stronger force of meaning of «to exist». Adverbs are suitable in this case because they show manner. «Quickly», for example, could be rephrased «in a quick way». If you are well you are «in a good way» or «well» (being the irregular adverb instead of «goodly»). You can’t compare this to the copular usage which equates states where you would say «I am red» instead of «I am redly» because you are red you are not «in a red way».

In my analysis of «I am good» «good» is being used as an adverb. There are a restricted number of adjectives that can do this (he runs fast for example) but in my usage «good» isn’t one of these.

One thing I would take issue with my two-year-younger self would be my phrasing of that post. It sounds quite prescriptive, and I doubt that’s what I meant. Instead of To my mind «good» is wrong because it is an adjective
today I would say In my usage «good» is wrong because it only acts as an adjective for me. I don’t think there is anything wrong per se in using «good» as one of those adjectives which can function as an adverb just that I don’t do it.

Difference between «I’m fine» and «I’m good»

When my coworker in the US asks me «How are you?» I usually answer «I’m fine», but the last time I told him «I’m good» and he replied «I’m glad to hear that».

It looks like «I’m fine» means «I’m OK» but not quite good as «I’m good».

What is the difference between them and if the score of happy is 10, what is the score of «I’m fine» and «I’m good»? (higher score means happier)

In common usage, «I’m fine» is a generally positive way of saying «There’s nothing particularly wrong»; yet it also means that there isn’t anything superlatively right, well, or good.

«I’m good», however, is a positive assertion that your personal situation and the events surrounding it are supererogatory compared to your usual state of being. That is, by describing your state of being as «good», you suggest that your personal situation is definitively satisfactory, in all respects.

Basically, «I’m fine» means «I’m OK», «I’m getting by with no problems», and so on, while «I’m good» suggests «I’m happy», «I am currently aware of how well I am, and how well my life is going», «I’m satisfied, content, and am quite enjoying myself», etc.

You can think of it this way:

«Are you sick? You look pale, and weak.»

«No, I’m fine! Please, stop worrying about me!»

«Are you sick? You look pale, and weak.»

«No, I’m good! I’ve actually been working out indoors, recently, and I may be pale, but I’m certainly not weak. I feel great!»

Although the OP specifically mentions the US, it’s worth mentioning that this also has a bit of US/British variation. «I’m good» to my (Brit) ears sounds a bit American, although its use is becoming increasingly common on this side of the pond. I think it’s related to the increasing use of «good» instead of «well» in some informal contexts e.g. «How did you get on at the interview? I did good, thanks».

«I’m fine» means the same as «I’m well». I.e. I’m not ill.

«I’m good» means that I am morally sound: for instance, I do good deeds, I think good thoughts.

This latter meaning is being used more and more to mean «I am well».

In UK English, «I’m fine» is the standard reply to «How are you?»

«I’m good,» means I am well behaved. A child is likely to say this.

In the context of a greeting such as «How are you?», which is typically asked in a ritual manner and the asker is not usually interested in the answer, any positive response is equivalent.

«I’m fine», «I’m good», «Fine, thanks», «Fine», «Good», «Good, thanks», etc etc

When your coworker then said «I’m glad to hear that» it probably also carried no significant meaning. I’m pretty sure your coworker did not decide that you were better than any other day, and instead said something positive as a response.

These greeting type situations are very formulaic and you can confuse people if you take the words on face value instead of as a greeting.

Now, if your coworker is specifically asking about your health or the state of your project/business/life, etc, and actually wants a legitimate status update, he may make a distinction between «fine» and «good», but to many people these words will be so similarly shaded that you’d do better to pay attention to the manner in which the word is said than to the word itself.

«I’m fine» is more common here in the UK. «I’m good» might actually sound a little Americanised in the UK, and a little strange to some people, but you shouldn’t have many problems with it. «I’m fine» seems to work in America as well. You might want to say something like:

«No, I’m alright thanks.»
«No thank you, I’m fine.»

I personally dislike it very much, but «I’m good» has become very common in Australia.

It is used to mean «I don’t need any help», and it also used as a reply to «How are you?»

In the past, the reply to «How are you?» would have been «I’m well».

The nasty pedant in me wants to respond «I was asking about your health, not your morals.»

As a response to the question «How are you (doing)?», I think the first two mean the same, taraa.

They mean «All is well with me». It isn’t specifically about health.

«I’m (very) well, (thank you)» informs us that you are in good health.

Of course these replies are often simply a matter of form. The speaker may be seriously ill or going bankrupt, but it may not be appropriate to bring that up.

I don’t mean to extend this already-too-long thread, but I would not interpret «I’m well» as a response to «how are you?» as meaning «I’m in good health».

If you inquire about someone’s health, the person is more likely to answer along the lines of «I’m doing much better now, thanks».

«I’m well» and «I’m good» are the most common set answers to «how are you?», which itself is a perfunctory salutation. As you can see above, people can argue about the grammar involved, particularly those who like to cite that «good» is a predicate adjective in «I am good» and therefore is the correct form.

If someone has had an accident or had a serious illness and perhaps been in the hospital, then the context of «how are you doing/recovering?» is a bit different. I would not expect the previously-sick person to say, «I’m well», but rather, «I’m much better thanks» or «I’m still in pain, but out of the woods» or something to that effect.

I don’t mean to extend this already-too-long thread, but I would not interpret «I’m well» as a response to «how are you?» as meaning «I’m in good health».

If you inquire about someone’s health, the person is more likely to answer along the lines of «I’m doing much better now, thanks».

Regarding the extent to which «I’m good» is used in the UK, age and social background of the speakers must be taken into account.

Lots of younger Brits are very familiar with «I’m good» and many choose to use it. Anecdotally, a younger person that self-identifies with metropolitan middle class people is far more likely than typically backward looking older Brits.

It is nevertheless seen as somehow indicative of something, a desire to eschew the more familiar «I’m fine».

Far more importantly, I think many such questions or answers about whether an expression is common or not must take into account social factors such as age, SES (social class), education and area of residence or upbringing.

The -ly suffix can either make an adjective into an adverb or soften the meaning of the adjective, depending on context and depending on the root word. Poorly and badly as adjectives are like asleep or alive in that they never come in front of a noun (unlike goodly or elderly).

«I feel poorly» can mean «I feel sort of ill» or «I don’t feel as healthy as I would like», and that makes it an adjective, like «healthy», and «I feel badly» can mean «I feel sort of bad» in various senses («I feel sort of ill», «I feel sort of guilty», «I feel sort of sad», etc.), and that makes it an adjective too.

«I feel in a bad way» can mean «I feel kind of ill» too.

Also, poorly and badly can be adverbs and «in a bad way» can also modify a verb and have different meanings (e.g. «I swim poorly», «I miss her badly», «He touched her in a bad way»).

So «I feel poorly» and «I feel badly» can mean something about health, something about emotions or sense of morality, something about sense of touch, something about skill, or something about manner, and «I feel in a bad way» can have something to do with health, emotions, sense of touch, manner, or intent.

I can’t imagine the sentence «I feel well» meaning ‘I have an excellent sense of touch’. It is so unlikely, un-idiomatic, that it’s not worth introducing to this discussion, which is already very complicated. Part of the complication is that (some) Americans have difference usages from British English speakers.

Talking only about BrE speakers, some differ in usage from others. Take the word ‘poorly’, which in some BrE regional varieties is used to mean ‘unwell’, physically ill, possibly in the north.
-«How’s Ann these days?»
-«She’s very poorly.»
It just happens that I never ever use this word when I’m talking about health status. I understand it and I’m from the north, but for whatever reasons it was not used like this in my family or social circles.
‘Poorly’ can be an adjective or an adverb. Despite its apparent adverbial form ending in ‘-ly’, it is adjectival in ‘I feel poorly’.

I have no idea of the status of ‘I feel badly’ in educated American English, but I have the expression it’s very common. In my variety of BrE it sounds wrong and ignorant. I would be amazed to hear it, regardless of variety.
With the verbs of perception, the exact meaning and usage has to be carefully studied.

For “I’m well”, there is well (adjective) 1b: being in satisfactory condition or circumstances

For “I’m good”, there is good (adjective) 2e: free from infirmity or sorrow

For “I’m doing good”, there is good (adverb) 1: WELL

So they all seem fine to me.

I think this question is harmful and offensive, as thesunneversets said.

The answers to the question «How are you?» that the questioner says are wrong are in fact all perfectly good English.

The questioner is grossly misinterpreting the dictionary by extracting one area of meaning and ignoring the rest. He simply doesn’t understand the real meanings of the words «good» and «well».

The Wordsmyth dictionary gives this:

definition 1: having qualities that are desired, enjoyed, or beneficial; desirable.
synonyms: beneficial, desirable, positive, well

Other dictionaries give something similar. «Good» is a broad term meaning what is desirable, well, healthy, positive, etc.

To the question «how are you?» the following are all fine and grammatical:

I just hope learners are not led astray by this question.

I’m really not so sure the first is incorrect. To say that you are well is, to my understanding, a correct way of describing your health.

I’ve never seen the use of «well» in that context formally corrected. Is it really wrong?

That said, I think many people simply exchange «well» with «good», whatever the situation.

If you want to take this narrow interpretation, then the question is wrong. It should be:

How are you doing? / I’m doing well.

You are, apparently, not interested in how a person is, because evidently all the common answers are not acceptable to you, but in how a person is doing.

In practice, no one really cares about the difference, but there is a fault in your question.

Why do they get it wrong? Perhaps sometimes because they’re not really listening to the question. It seems to me that these sorts of pleasantries are often responded to by rote, which means the individual response is one of habit.

While I’ll agree that the «incorrect» versions grate on the ears, the «correct» version is perhaps a little too prescriptive for my tastes.

Since you’re probably the asker in these exchanges, perhaps a workaround would be to ask a question that is less likely to elicit a rote response. «How is your day going» or «How was your weekend» or something that would nudge the respondent to respond to the question you asked instead of just spitting out a generic response.

People get these «wrong» for a few reasons:

For the last one, it may sound cynical, but it has more to do with the problem than anything else. It’s not that «it doesn’t matter» how you respond, it’s that no one is really paying attention to the response, so the «wrong» replies are never corrected, and thus perpetuate.

But also, since I am cynical, it really doesn’t matter and there is no wrong reply since the response is really just a symbolic gesture intended to return another meaningless social gesture. When you think about it, «How are you doing?» is asking for the state of something that is being done. «How am I doing what?» But since it’s a gesture, as is the response, as long as both parties understand the symbolic response, the literal connotation is nearly insignificant.

Having said all that, my pet peeve is the classic «I’m feeling poorly» instead of «I’m feeling bad». Again, another case of learned word-classism, both favoring «poor» to «bad» and thinking that adverbs are better than adjectives, but with the literal connotation being «My ability to feel is poor.» I always want to say «Do you feel as poorly as you speak?»

Hi i’m a bit confused about all this! could someone say to me the difference? is there any other important way to say how you are that I am missing? Is «i’m very well» correct as well?
And what about I’m very good or pretty good?

I’m very good = soy muy bueno
I’m very well/fine = estoy muy bien (de salud)

Piensa que good es adjetivo (bueno), y well es adverbio (bien).

Por otro lado, «pretty» como adverbio es bastante (como «rather» o «quite»)
I’m pretty good at maths = soy bastante bueno en matemáticas.

En inglés es «incorrecto» decir I’m good como respuesta a How are you? Sin embargo, casi todo el mundo lo dice así.

Es aceptable decir I’m good/fine/well si quieres decir Estoy bien.
I’m OK es como decir más o menos o así así.

Panj is content that he can do nothing for Amy right now, so he moves on to someone else.

Speaking only for myself, I wouldn’t use that as an answer to this particular question. However, I would use the contracted form (I’m good) as a response to «Is there anything I can help you with?»
That is, in a context like this, I take «I’m good» as a response to an offer of help. You might also say «No thanks. I’m good.»

It means something else in conversations about health, or as a reply to a general question like «How are you?»

Ha, that’s funny. In my mind, though, the usage here is a little different from the original question.

I use «I’m good» frequently in response to the sort of questions that the OP asked. A synonymous phrase would be «All set.» E.g:

«Anything else I can help you with today?»

«Nah, I’m good. Thanks.» or «Nope, I’m all set. Thank you.»

It doesn’t really have anything to do with how I’m doing or feeling (I would say that even if I’ve got a cold.) It just means that this transaction is finished and the person has helped in all the ways they can that are relevant to it.

The situation the OP mentioned «Do you have any other problems?» sounded to me like the end of some sort of dialogue with someone trying to help you. Therefore, when everything is taken care of you can signal the end of it with «I’m good». (not «I am good», by the way.)

It’s a shorter answer to the question: «how are you?»
Instead of saying «I’m good, and you?»
Some people may answer «Good, you?»

This is usually a response to «how are you? or «how are you doing?».

The myth — that you should really say «I’m well» — relies on the idea that modifying a verb requires an adverb. The verb «am,» however, involves special circumstances that make «I’m good» a perfectly acceptable answer.

It’s true that adverbs, not adjectives, are used to modify most verbs. For example, «We danced well,» not «We danced good.» Adjectives are only used to describe nouns, as in «We performed a good dance.»

But different rules govern the verb «to be,» of which «am» is a form. This verb connects the second part of the sentence, called the predicate, back to the first, the subject.

The circumstances then require either an adjective or noun in the predicate, instead of an adverb. For example, we say «I’m sleepy» or «I’m hungry» — not «I’m sleepily» or «I’m hungrily.»

Therefore, «I’m good,» is a proper response.
