Умер Энди Флетчер – клавишник и сооснователь любимой мною группы Depeche Mode.
Узнав об этом, я вспомнил одну из лучших на мой взгляд концертных видео-записей в истории поп-музыки – Devotional. Ее поставил и снял маститый нидерландский клипмейкер Антон Корбейн. Запись была сделана во время тура Depeche Mode в поддержку альбома Songs of Faith and Devotion в 1993 году.
Для меня как для поклонника творчества DP это золотое время группы: музыка дышит неповторимой мрачной атмосферой «депешей», состав еще не покинул Алан Уайлдер (во многом ту самую атмосферу создававший), хотя при этом Дейв Гаан находится в самом центре зависимости от тяжелых препаратов, Мартин Гор увлекается алкоголем, а Энди Флетчер страдает от «психологической нестабильности». При этом коллектив находится на пике своей творческой формы, экспериментирует со звуком и создает песни, которым суждено стать культовыми в среде фанатов Depeche Mode, да и популярной музыки в целом.
Devotional это идеальный трек-лист, из которого не выкинуть ни одной песни, и отдельная, глубоко продуманная постановка съемок и декораций для каждой композиции. Все это создает уникальную атмосферу на сцене и экране – DP и Корбейн предлагают зрителям настоящий полуторочасовой видеотрип.
В 1995 году Devotional номинировали на «Грэмми» как лучший музыкальный фильм (но победил фильм Zoo TV: Live from Sydney с выступлением U2).

Depeche Mode release for the first time on DVD, their acclaimed performance film, «Devotional», recorded on the band’s 1993 sold out world tour. Directed by the innovative photographer and director and longterm Depeche Mode visual collaborator, Anton Corbijn, this hugely impressive and visually stunning film perfectly captures the essence of one of Britain’s most pioneering acts at the height of their powers. On its release in 1993, «Devotional» was nominated for a Grammy award for Best Long Form Music Video.
The «Devotional» 2 disc DVD is a compilation of the band’s live performances recorded in Frankfurt and Barcelona on the band’s «Devotional» world tour. Extras, exclusive to DVD, include a Depeche Mode rockumentary, an interview with Anton Corbijn and six remastered promo videos, including «Walking In My Shoes». The DVD also features a series of eight back projections that were used on the second half of the tour.
The performance includes renditions of Depeche Mode classics, «Personal Jesus», «Walking In My Shoes» and «Enjoy The Silence», «Never Let Me Down Again» with exclusive bonus tracks, «Halo» and «Policy of Truth.

Depeche Mode: Songs Of Faith And Devotion, Collector’s Edition (SACD+DVD)
После триумфального альбома Violator и не менее триумфального турне в поддержку пластинки от Depeche Mode ожидали чуда. При этом, силы музыкантов явно были на исходе. Ведь альбому Violator предшествовал не менее глобальный и напряженный (но и не менее триумфальный) тур в поддержку Music For The Masses! Тем не менее, своим новым альбомом Depeche Mode не только оправдали ожидания поклонников, но и даже заставили говорить музыкальный мир о смене стиля. Действительно, в саунде новой работы «депешей» было много неожиданного. Впрочем, не стоит полагать, что эксперименты Мартина Гора произвели впечатление лишь на критиков и самых преданных фэнов коллектива — пластинка имела даже больший коммерческий успех, чем Violator. Чем же так поразили современников «Песни веры и преданности»?
Давайте подробно рассмотрим трек-лист пластинки.
1. I Feel You (04:35)
Создавая первый сингл к новому альбому, Depeche Mode явно ориентировались на собственный же хит Personal Jesus. В основе обоих треков лежат очень похожие назойливо-ожесточенные гитарные риффы, строящиеся всего на двух звуках. Да и общий рок-уклон, появившийся у группы именно в Personal Jesus, превосходно ощущается в I Feel You. При этом, в новом сингле появилась какая-то особая атмосфера неистовости и в то же время одухотворенности, чего не было в номере из Violator.
2. Walking In My Shoes (05:35)
Второй сингл не уступает начальному треку в атмосферности и выразительности, но помимо уже привычных гитар в сопровождении появляются сэмплы струнных, что придает песне Depeche Mode поистине симфонический пафос. Вообще, несмотря на мелодические достоинства вокальной линии, аккомпанемент здесь играет не менее важную роль. Помимо уже упомянутых сэмплов струнных обратите внимание на вступление и роскошное гитарное соло в конце песни.
3. Condemnation (03:20)
Одна из самых любимых песен Дэйва Гаана, Condemnation воспринимается с удивлением даже в контексте довольно-таки экспериментального альбома, коим является Song Of Faith And Devotion. Третий сингл звучит действительно очень необычно. Трек явно написан под влиянием госпел-музыки. Несложная, но эффектная и хорошо запоминающаяся гармоническая последовательность идеально сочетается с великолепной вокальной мелодикой, а все это вместе создает ощущение возвышенности и одухотворенности.
4. Mercy in You (04:17)
После спокойной и просветленной Condemnation четвертый трек воспринимается как что-то мрачное и пессимистичное. Однако, эта песня не столь однозначна в плане внутренного содержания, как может показаться на первый взгляд. Номер притягивает и завораживает — во многом именно своей многогранностью, богатством эмоциональных ньюансов.
5. Judas (05:14)
В пятом треке мы слышим пение Мартина Гора — как всегда прониковенное и выразительное. Как и прежние песни, Judas великолепен и с гармонической, и мелодической точки зрения. Что же касается инструментального сопровождения, то опять обращают на себя внимания сэмплы струнных инструментов. Вот только в данном случае они создают ощущение не пафоса, но просветленной умиротворенности.
6. In Your Room (04:43)
А вот уже и по-настоящему мрачная композиция. Четвертый сингл получился депрессивным и почти готическим по звучанию. Но при этом — по-прежнему налицо совершенство всех параметров музыкальной ткани и, как результат, предельная выразительность!
7. Get Right With Me (03:32)
Для любой другой группы и в рамках любого другого альбома Get Right With Me была бы вполне удачным номером. Но соседство с настоящими шедеврами, которыми изобилует Songs Of Faith And Devotion, обнажает недостатки седьмого трека. В вокальной линии явно слышатся интонации Condemnation, да и бэк-вокал присутствует, но в мелодическом плане эти номера — небо и земля. К тому же, в Get Right With Me довольно спорное продюссирование: бойкие ритмы сопровождения не лучшим образом сочетаются со спокойной (хоть и не очень выразительной) мелодикой.
8. Rush (04:37)
К восьмому номеру Depeche Mode уже достаточно свыклись с рок-звучанием, чтобы окончательно оставить синти-поп и создать трек с изрядным уклоном в рок-альтернативу с элементами техно. И если оценивать песню в отрыве от остальных номеров альбома, то нельзя не признать, что перед нами — действительно качественная и эффектная песня, которую могли написать только настоящие мастера. Но если «вспомнить», что это творение «депешей», то сразу бросается в глаза отсутствие яркой мелодики, изысканной гармонии и — главное — неповторимой атмосферности, сполна присущей зрелым произведениям Depeche Mode.
9. One Caress (03:30)
И вот, после двух, в общем-то, проходных номеров музыканты дарят нам еще одну жемчужину. У микрофона опять Мартин Гор, а в аккомпанирующем составе снова доминируют «струнные». Самое интересное, что ударных (или драм-ритма) нет как таковых. Это создает легкий налет академизма, но удивительная композиция Гора от подобного приема только выигрывает. Песня отличается подлинной красотой и какой-то трогательной душевной «обнаженностью», доверительностью. При этом, здесь нет подчеркнутой экспрессии — музыкальная ткань буквально излучает благородную сдержанность.
10. Higher Love (05:56)
Финальный трек атмосферен и местами довольно эффектен, но, опять-таки, в мелодическом плане далек от лучших номеров альбома. Впрочем, в качестве завершения, своего рода эпиграфа к этой потрясающей пластинке, Higher Love выглядит вполне достойно.
Общие впечатления от альбома
Думаю, не будет преувеличением назвать Songs Of Faith And Devotion одной из лучших работ Depeche Mode за всю их творческую деятельность. Альбом получился очень цельным, ровным и — по-настоящему впечатляющим. Эксперименты и уже наработанные приемы, подлинное «стихийное» вдохновение и богатый опыт — все это сконцентрировано здесь в наиболее удачных пропорциях. Однако, нельзя не отметить, что Depeche Mode постепенно отходят от синти-попа и в большинстве песен тяготеют уже к року, готике и даже техно. Впрочем, стилистические «шатания» ничуть не сказываются на качестве музыкального материала — из десяти альбомных треков семь песен с полным правом могут быть включены в любой The Best Of. Поэтому пройти мимо этой пластинки нельзя ни одному настоящему меломану. Даже если вы не являетесь поклонником Depeche Mode, диск на вас произведет неизгладимое впечатление.

Переиздание альбома Songs Of Faith And Devotion включает в себя два диска: гибридный SACD и DVD. Диски упакованы в очень приятный диджипак (картонная «раскладушка»), который дополнительно вложен в полупрозрачную пластиковую упаковку.

Дизайн издания вызывает положительные эмоции — все сделано со вкусом и чувством стиля. Вот только напечатки на самих дисках выбиваются из общей цветовой гаммы, но это уже особенность всех переизданий. Интересно, почему?
В кармашек диджипака вложен 16-страничный буклет с интересной аннотацией Дэниэла Миллера (глава лейбла Mute), текстами всех песен (в том числе и бонус-треков) и фотографиями музыкантов Depeche Mode.
Диск Super Audio CD
Подробно о формате SACD мы писали в статье про альбом Depeche Mode Speak&Spell. Поэтому давайте пропустим вводную часть и сразу приступим к тестированию качества звучания на SACD.
Шестиканальный микс превосходен. Оцените переклички в припеве Rush и симфонический объем в Walking In My Shoes! К качеству звучания тоже не придраться: саунд насыщенный, эмоциональный и яркий. Именно так и должен звучать альбом Depeche Mode!
Что же касается CD-слоя (его объем — 480 Мб), то никаких защит на нем нет, поэтому скопировать треки для создания резервной копии или прослушивания в портативном mp3-плеере удастся без проблем. Радует, что информация о каждом треке (название, альбом и артист) уже есть на диске, поэтому полученные аудиофайлы можно сразу записывать на флэш-память плеера.

Меню DVD статично и неозвучено, но зато навигация по нему очень удобная и интуитивно понятная. Правда, перед выходом в меню придется просмотреть непроматываемую 22-секундную рекламу лейбла Mute. К сожалению, UOP’ы (действия, запрещенные пользователю) есть и на самих материалах. Например, если вы смотрите DVD на компьютере, то воспроизвести фильм не с начала, а откуда-нибудь с середины у вас не получится. Спасибо хоть ускоренная перемотка не заблокирована. Кроме того, на аудиотреках невозможно переключение звуковых дорожек во время прослушивания (разумеется, если не пользоваться специальными программами для снятия подобных защит).
Помимо аудиопрограммы самого альбома (в форматах PCM 24-bit, DD 5.1 и DTS 96/24) на DVD представлены следующие материалы:
Depeche Mode: 1991 — 1994 (We were going to live together, record together and it was going to be wonderful) (36:00)
Документальный фильм, представленный на DVD, четко делится на две части. Первая (около 20 минут) посвящена впечатлениям музыкантов, продюсеров и менеджеров Mute от записи альбома. А вторая часть (около 10 минут) рассказывает о Devotional Tour, а также о последствиях, к которым он привел. Завершается фильм очень красноречивым кадром:
Нельзя сказать, что фильм содержит какие-либо особо ценные видеозаписи или что-то такое, чего поклонники группы прежде не знали. В этом отношении лента заметно проигрывает документалке Антона Корбийна, представленной на делюкс-издании DVD Videos 86>98+. Там же, кстати, есть и полный клип I Feel You, чего нет в новом фильме. Однако, работа Корбийна была «взглядом изнутри» и создавалась в тот же год, что и альбом, тогда как рассматриваемая документалка состоит преимущественно из новых интервью.
К изображению на новых видеозаписях претензий нет, а качество старых материалов колеблется от среднего до хорошего.
Additional Tracks
Как и на предыдущих переизданиях, DVD-диск включает в себя би-сайды с синглов к альбому.
1. My Joy (03:57)
Мощный техно-трек сам по себе не особо интересен в плане мелодики, но зато очень показателен: это яркий пример того, в какую сторону работала мысль Depeche Mode при создании альбома. Отсюда же — саунд Rush, средний раздел In Your Room и, отчасти, I Feel You. Правда, би-сайд второго сингла еще более радикален, поэтому неудивительно, что в основной трек-лист он не был включен.
2. Condemnation (Paris Mix) (03:21)
Именно на этот микс был снят клип Condemnation. Отличия «парижской» версии от альбомного варианта заметны, но не критичны. На первый план выведено фортепиано, а звучание ударных, наоборот, смягчено.

А вот и еще один любопытный стилистический эксперимент. Как уже видно из названия, Depeche Mode заходят здесь на территорию джаза. Другое дело, что получается это у них очень своеобразно — скорее это не джаз в чистом виде, а атмосферная поп-композиция с привкусом авангардного джаза. Самое интересное, что приятная и выразительная вокальная мелодия является вполне типичной для лирических песен Depeche Mode, но вот инструментальное сопровождение (сбивчивые ритмы живой перкуссии, причудливый басовый рифф, флегматичные пассажи электрогитары…) смешивает все карты и заставляет недоуменно воскликнуть: «Как? Это действительно Depeche Mode?».
4. In Your Room (Zephyr Mix) (04:50)
Этот микс четвертого сингла интересен прежде всего разнообразными аранжировочными находками, в числе которых — гитарные риффы и даже акустические вкрапления. Но в целом этот вариант производит куда менее сильное впечатление, чем альбомная версия.
5. I Feel You (Life’s Too Short Mix) (08:35)
Клубный техно-ремикс первого сингла сам по себе очень неплох, однако от оригинала здесь остались рожки да ножки. Песню можно узнать только по доносящейся откуда-то издалека фразе I Feel You. Причем голос Гаана в ней заметно изменен, что создает ощущении потусторонности и нереальности.
6. Walking In My Shoes (Grungy Gonads Mix) (06:24)
По тому же пути идут и ремиксеры второго сингла, хотя связи с оригиналом здесь куда более явные. Однако доминирует новый материал, изобилующий электронными эффектами, многочисленными наслоениями и мелодическими вкраплениями. А утяжеленное, но все же танцевальное сопровождение делает ремикс отличным выбором для ди-джеев модных клубов… В своем жанре — образцовая работа.
7. My Joy (Slowslide Mix) (05:11)
Все сказанное про предыдущие два трека справедливо и для этого ремикса. Общее впечатление от трека — очень хорошее.
8. In Your Room (Apex Mix) (06:43)
Материала песни здесь — на две секунды, но атмосферности и эффектных аранжировочных находок даже поболее будет, чем в предыдущих ремиксах. Тем не менее, в целом номер довольно однообразен.
Качество звука на би-сайдах превосходное — повышенное разрешение (24 бита) помогает саунду раскрыться, а вот отсутствие шестиканального микса огорчает — атмосферным клубным ремиксам объемность совсем не помешала бы.
Общие впечатления от издания
За неимением достаточного количества би-сайдов на DVD решили записать ремиксы с синглов. С одной стороны это радует, так как представленные ремиксы действительно очень хороши. И тем более приятно, что все треки были записаны с повышенным разрешением. Но с другой стороны — если уж решили записать ремиксы, то почему нельзя было записать все сингловые номера, имеющие отношение к альбому Songs Of Faith And Devotion? Места на DVD для этого вполне достаточно. Кроме того, по-прежнему удручает отсутствие клипов. Но это все детали, которые вряд ли могут испортить впечатление от переиздания потрясающего альбома Depeche Mode, благо качество звука на высоте, да и новая документалка имеется в наличии.

27.07.1993 Budapest, Hungary, Hidegkuti Nándor Stadium. A memorable concert where Dave sits in the audience several times.
31.07.1993 London, Crystal Palace National Sports Centre. The final concert of the European Tour is attended by 36131 fans.
07.09.1993 Quebec, Canada, Colisée de Québec. Dave Gahan is being arrested for assault at the hotel, where there is some disagreement over the power outage.
08.10.1993 New Orleans, Lakefront Arena. Dave Gahan can’t return to the stage for an encore. He was transported to a hospital with a suspected drug overdose and heart failure. The band will perform «Death’s Door» on the second Encore.

После выхода своего самого успешного и популярного альбома Violator, фронтмен группы решается на довольно смелый эксперимент при записи нового полноформатника. Находясь под впечатлением от расцветающей в те года гранжевой сцены, Дэйв Гаан предложил своим коллегам записать нечто подобное и непохожее на предыдущие работы коллектива.
На новом альбоме полностью отсутствуют танцевальные номера, музыка стала более мрачной и роковой. На атмосферу и общее настроение альбома повлияла наркозависимость фронтмена и его постоянные проблемы с алкоголем. Однако несмотря на это, все участники коллектива полностью справились со своей задачей и записали альбом, который навсегда вошёл в историю рок музыки. Переоценить вклад группы в современную музыку невозможно, не зря их считают легендами.
Как можно понять из названия пластинки, основные темы это: любовь, вера и преданность. Каждая из песен, отдельное творение заслуживающее вашего внимания. Стоит выделить такие треки как: I Feel You, Walking In My Shoes, Condemnation, In Your Room, One Caress и конечно же Higher Love. Спасибо за внимание. Всем хорошей музыки)

Жаль что последние альбомы куда как хуже, видимо не получить уже ещё один уровня Ultra
Для меня последний нормальный их альбом это Playing the Angel. Дальше есть годные песни, но их собираться всего на 1 альбом.
Как-то с ангелом я не подружился) Буквально пара песен нравится и всё)
Когда он вышел, мне прям дико вкатил, но со временем (через годик) я к нему простыл и он для меня сейчас просто очень хороший альбом.
Мне всегда кажется, что он какой-то вымученный и искусственный) но это только моё мнение)определённо у этого альбома уйма поклонников и это очень хорошо)просто мне он не зашёл)
Не спорю, там есть хорошие песни: John the revelator, suffer well, precious, i want it all. Но вот сам альбом как-то серо воспринимается)
К сожалению это так. Для меня они закончились после Exciter. Дальше уже невозможно было слушать.
А для меня после Sounds of the universe (хотя уже он был спорный)
Вот Delta Machine и Spirit воистину неудачные альбомы, практически 1-2 песни получились хорошими

Совсем забыл про него) Звуки вселенной тоже очень годный альбом, но уже тогда начали поступать тревожные звоночки) Дельта просто мёртвый, а спирит не рыба ни мясо) Про ангела тоже не могу сказать ничего хорошего)
Пара песен там все-таки хороших есть, имхо. Heaven и Broken мне точно понравились. Особенно те записи, что без обработки.
А в спирите неплохой Going Backwards.
В дельте нравиться Alone, а в спирите You Move. Возможно мне не нравится само звучание данных альбомов. В музыке я не сильно разбираюсь, но где-то прочитал что для записи они использовали аналоговые синтезаторы. Похоже именно это мне и не нравится в альбомах. Если на звуках вселенной их влияние было ещё не таким явным, то на последующих альбомах звук стал для меня совершенно неинтересным.
Ждем следующий альбом, может еще выстрелят?.

Большое спасибо за дополнение) У группы действительно был очень тяжёлый период во время записи и дальнейших туров) Альбом можно сказать был записан «потом и кровью») Это ещё одна причина, почему я выделил именно его из всей дискографии группы. Одна только песня Mercy in You имеет, если я не ошибаюсь, около шести вариаций. Группа никак не могла решить какая из них попадёт в альбом)

Songs of Faith and Devotion (working title Songs Of Love And Devotion) is the eighth studio album by English electronic music band Depeche Mode. It was first released on 22 March 1993 in the United Kingdom by Mute Records and a day later in the United States by Sire Records and Reprise Records. The album incorporated a more aggressive, darker rock-oriented tone than its predecessor Violator (1990), largely influenced by the emerging alternative rock and grunge scenes in the United States.

Upon its release, Songs of Faith and Devotion reached number one in several countries, and became the first Depeche Mode album to debut atop the charts in both the UK and the US. To support the album, Depeche Mode embarked on the fourteen-month-long Devotional Tour, the largest tour they had ever undertaken to that date.
Recording the album and the subsequent tour exacerbated growing tensions and difficulties within the band, prompting Alan Wilder to quit, making this album the final one with him as a band member. The ordeal had exhausted their creative output following the enormous success they had enjoyed with Violator, leading to rumours and media speculation that the band would split. Depeche Mode subsequently recovered from the experience, and released Ultra in 1997.

Techniques and processes
Songs of Faith and Devotion was recorded over eight months in a rented villa in Madrid during 1992, as well as later sessions in Hamburg and London. Following his work on U2’s seventh studio album, Achtung Baby, producer Flood suggested the idea of building their own studio in a rented house where the band would live and work, the same process having yielded huge successes for U2. A studio was set up in the basement of the villa, with two drum kits using different spaces to achieve different sounds. The recordings from the kits could then be processed through synthesizers, such as the large Roland System 700 the band had installed in the studio. The band had become aware of getting caught in easy routines in the studio leading to boredom and thus wanted to change as many aspects to their approach to the recording as possible.
Wilder recalled on Violator the band had relied heavily on sequencing; though the album used a great deal more live recorded audio than previous Depeche Mode releases, the audio had been quantised to the exact beats of the bars, resulting in a slick but sequenced feel. For making Songs of Faith and Devotion, the band wanted the sound to be looser and less programmed. Tracks such as «I Feel You» included drums performed live by Wilder which were then sampled and sequenced to form drum loops using Cubase, in a different structure to how they were originally performed, keeping all the dynamics and inherent mistakes of a human performance. Embellishments like reversed cymbals were added later at the behest of Wilder, who often suggested such experimentation.
Further techniques used in recording included the reversed piano on the outro to the track «Mercy in You». The introduction of the track «Judas» has uilleann pipes recorded with reversed reverberation mixed into the sound, to achieve a haunting, atmospheric feel. «Walking in My Shoes» included a piano part which was processed through a guitar processor to add distortion. A harpsichord sample was then played and recorded over the top, giving a unique, layered sound to the riff. Early demos for «Condemnation» included all four band members performing in the same space—Andy Fletcher bashing a flight case with a pole, producer Flood and Dave Gahan clapping, Alan Wilder playing a drum and Martin Gore playing an organ. The sound produced was very embryonic; however, it gave the band a direction as to how the track should sound. Guitars were processed through devices such as Leslie tone cabinets, originally designed for organs, to achieve different sounds.

Following the success of Violator and the subsequent tour, the band had taken a long break from each other. Upon returning, they found it difficult to collaborate, with several factors contributing to the more difficult atmosphere that the band experienced recording the album. The band living and working together in the same house meant that they rarely got breaks from each other as opposed to previous albums whereby the band would go to work in a studio, and then return to their respective homes or hotels at the end of each day. Fletcher described the band living together as «claustrophobic», and the lack of a break from each other as a factor in contributing to the stress. Gore felt pressured to write tracks that could live up to the success of the previous album, Violator, despite encouragement from Fletcher that he wrote better under pressure. Gahan had moved to Los Angeles following Violator and had been spending time with up and coming alternative rock bands such as Jane’s Addiction, influencing him to present the idea of creating a rock-oriented record, leading to creative differences with the rest of the band. Since then, Gahan had also developed a heroin addiction, which slowed the recording process. The band also began to jam together, something which they had not previously done in terms of album writing, only for fun. The lack of success of coming up with musical ideas from such jams led to intense frustration.
Gahan downplayed his role on the album, stating the only thing he felt he contributed was what he considers his greatest vocal performance for «Condemnation». Conversely, Wilder praised his role, stating that on previous releases, Gahan’s studio contribution was often only vocal performance, and thus did not get in the way much; but during the recording of Songs of Faith and Devotion Dave often offered a lot of positive encouragement, and Wilder’s creative differences with Gore were actually the real source of the tension in the band. Flood recalls Wilder and Gore having a very heated argument over the mix to «Judas», and that there were constant disagreements throughout the recording process between the members of the band and Flood himself. Despite the feeling the band were realising one of their greatest works, Flood commented that the «little things» of the recording process never ran smoothly, leading to constant, largely non-constructive, arguing. Conditions improved between the band when the recording sessions moved to Hamburg, largely in part as it was a return to normal studio routine, as opposed to living together.
The album was mixed at the Olympic Studios in London by Wilder, Flood and Mark «Spike» Stent.
Artwork
Overlapping each image of the band members is a symbol representing that member, in a similar style to Led Zeppelin’s fourth studio album. The symbols first appeared on the cover of lead single «I Feel You», which did not feature the band members, and as such, each featured its member’s birthdate in the right-hand corner to identify the member.
Reception
Songs of Faith and Devotion became Depeche Mode’s first studio album to reach number one on both the UK Albums Chart and the US Billboard 200. It also topped the charts in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany and Switzerland.
The album received largely positive reviews from critics and peers of Depeche Mode. The Guardian critic Adam Sweeting dubbed Songs of Faith and Devotion an «astonishingly powerful album» and a «masterpiece». David Quantick of NME called it «a very fine record indeed», while Jon Pareles of The New York Times wrote that «the songs make desire more desperate, and more alluring, than ever». A mixed review came from Rolling Stone‘s Arion Berger, who wrote that the album «documents how Depeche Mode’s savvy justifies its worst instincts; like the band itself, it’s gloomy, pretentious and winning.» Robert Christgau of The Village Voice assigned the album a «dud» rating. In a retrospective review, Ned Raggett of AllMusic stated that «Songs of Faith and Devotion continues the Depeche Mode winning streak», and in 1999, he ranked the album at number 18 on his list of «The Top 136 or So Albums of the Nineties» for Freaky Trigger. Q later included it on their list of «In Our Lifetime: Q’s 100 Best Albums», along with Violator.
Band member Alan Wilder stated he felt «In Your Room» and «Walking in My Shoes» as some of the best works the band had ever done, a sentiment agreed upon by producer Flood, who commented that «many people» involved in the project shared such sentiments. Fellow musician Gary Numan also stated that Songs of Faith and Devotion was the album that saved his career, noting, «[after listening to this album] [my] music changed dramatically. It became much darker. At school I was excused from religious instruction because I had no faith and Songs of Faith and Devotion suddenly gave me something to write about and something to be bothered about. [. ] I love Depeche Mode, always will.»
The subsequent Devotional Tour to support the album was the largest Depeche Mode had undertaken to that point. The tour spanned fourteen months, visiting twenty-seven countries and played to over two million people over 158 dates. The tour covered 100,000 miles and required 90 tonnes of equipment. The huge scale of the tour was to cover the sponsoring costs. Anton Corbijn designed the elaborate stage design, the first time he had ever done so. The huge scale of the tour took its toll on the band members. Despite Fletcher’s comment that «Dave was loving it [the tour]. he was on a different planet», his heroin addiction had increased, Gore was drinking excessively and had several seizures, Fletcher was suffering from clinical depression to the point where he was replaced by Daryl Bamonte on all dates from April and the grueling nature of touring had taken its toll on Wilder. Gore later commented, «I don’t think anyone was ever the same after that tour», highlighting the tense nature of the tour, and Q magazine would later refer to the Devotional Tour as «the most debauched rock tour ever».
Following the tour, the experience of Songs of Faith and Devotion and the subsequent supporting tour had taken too hard a toll on Wilder, who announced his departure from the band on his 36th birthday in 1995, highlighting a highly uneven workload distribution, lack of acknowledgement from his bandmates, creative differences within the band and overall lack of cohesion. Wilder’s departure and the internal strife within the band, specifically Gahan’s growing heroin addiction led many to speculate that the band was finished. The band managed to recover from the loss of Wilder, releasing Ultra in 1997.

Devotional/Exotic Tour Diary

Daryl Bamonte, first roadie then tour manager then also keyboard player for Depeche Mode, wrote a tour diary for the Devotional and Exotic tour, which revealed some bizarre (though undoubtedly definitely not all bizarre) events throughout this mammoth tour. His diary was spread across Bong magazine issues #22 till #25, which were published between September 1994 and June 1995. Now-defunct fan-site Sacreddm.net has typed out this entire diary, and has been copied below.

«Just spent four days in ZURICH. There’s only so many cuckoo clocks you can look at in four days.»
May 27th, COPENHAGEN:
«Good show tonight. Good party afterwards. The tour is starting to hot up, as the band settle into it. Spirit of camaraderie starting to appear.»
May 28th, GOTHENBURG:
«Spiritualized have left. They didn’t like us. We went to the hotel disco after the show to think about a new support band. The resident band were playing, a dodgy Swedish ska band. Kessler asked them to support us in Stockholm the next night. The drummer came round first, and agreed on behalf of his band.»
May 29th, STOCKHOLM:
«Ska band were superb. Of all the support bands we’ve ever had, they are the most recent.»
June 1st, ROTTERDAM:
«Al’s birthday. I’m proud to say I (Dis-)Organized the most boring birthday party ever. Never mind. He’s got another birthday to come before this tour’s over.»
«Day off in MILAN. We just did two shows, which were great. I got refused entry to the cathedral in the city centre today. I didn’t have any sleeves. I argued that if I didn’t have any arms I wouldn’t have any sleeves, and they’d have to let me in then, but my Italian is surprisingly bad and when the polizia started shoving me, I thought I’d better hop it. Went to a bar instead. Much better.»

«Went to a disco in an airport at 7am. Yes. It’s getting that bad.»
June 14th, DORTMUND:
«After a great show (Westfalenhalle), we went over the road to the park hotel for a quiet drink. (The crew were staying there.) Woke up the next morning in a twin room in the park hotel. Apparently, Martin and I checked in.»
«We had ANOTHER support band tonight. Local lads. Their name was “Sonic Smell”. Yes, you heard it right: “Sonic Smell”. I’m sorry, but not even 70 years of communism can excuse a band from taking a name that basically means “Humungous stench”. PHEW!»
«Marxman joined the tour tonight. They’re pretty good. Der wickid actually, yernart amin?»
«We’ve just done two excellent sold-out shows at the Bercy. Hildia asked me “Are we doing The Bercy tonight?” and I replied “No, we’re doing Get Right With Me instead” and she just smiled. I think she’s got a cold.»

July 21st, FRANKFURT:
«It was 1978, and he was a young punk who had sneaked onto the stage and was dancing around in his bondage trousers, next to Joe Strummer. As the roadies rushed to get him, he ran full speed and as he flew into the crowd, he floated for a second, half hero, half angel. When he landed he realised it wasn’t 1978, it was 1993, and he was the singer of Depeche Mode and 12,000 Germans were trying to rip his trousers off.»
«Martin Gore’s birthday today, and guess what? We had a day off in OSTEND. A day-off-in-Ostend… I once wrote a script for a soap opera set in a pub in OSTEND. It was called “OSTENDERS”. It could have worked, but Anita Dobson sounded ridiculous with a Flemish accent. A day off in Ostend should have been as bad as it sounds, but we had a hotel on the beach, and looking across the North Sea you could almost smell the fish and chips. Three months away from Blighty; and now so close to home. We’ve got a gig in ZEEBRUGGE tomorrow and then a 2000 mile journey across the whole of Europe for a show in BUDAPEST. So near and yet so far…»
July 24th, ZEEBRUGGE:
«Headlined the huge Belga Beach festival today. The festival IS actually on the beach but Belga isn’t a coastal suburb of ZEEBRUGGE, it’s actually a brand of horrible cigarettes. The band were excellent tonight, even though the man upstairs decided to turn the shower on. The crowd stayed in good spirits all the same, and to show solidarity, Dave went right to the front of the stage, and dancing in bare feet, got absolutely soaked. He seemed to have an aversion to anything metal for some reason. We had a huge power-cut backstage tonight (about the same time Dave plugged his hairdryer in…).»
July 26th, BUDAPEST:
«It was a long trek from Belgium yesterday, and we had to drive out into the Hungarian countryside today for Anton to shoot the “CONDEMNATION” video. Dave seemed to spend most of the day being dragged around by Sam and Hildia. He wasn’t complaining though. It could have been the other way round…»
«Yet another support band today. A band called “Paralax”, whose kudos is bolstered by the fact that they were recommended by Alan Wilder (and they’re on Mute.) Most of the band entourage have gone to LONDON already to “prepare” for the Crystal Palace show. It’s amazing how calm and smooth today was…»
«Crystal Palace. Finally home after 3 months. 36,000+ people at this show, 1,000 with passes, and I know all of them, so backstage was chaos. My son had a good day. He definitely preferred DUB SYNDICATE to THE SISTERS OF MERCY. I used to think that ANDREW ELDRITCH was really cool. A god-like quasi-Darth Vader figure. He’s actually like RIGSBY.»
September 6th, QUEBEC:
«Did a rehearsal tonight and we have the opening night of the North American tour tomorrow night. The hotel sent us a memo today (in French). Kessler translated it. It basically said that all power in the hotel would be cut between midnight and 5am due to works being carried out. Couldn’t they have let us know when we booked the rooms three weeks ago? The memo also said that extra “staff” would be provided to “assist” guests to their rooms in the darkness. What this should have said was: “Several large, fat, ugly, stupid off-duty policemen will shine industrial-strength flashlights in your face while hurling obscenities at you in French, therefore implying that you have no right to be in the hotel and so giving them every right to deny you access to the rooms that you have paid a lot of money for.” Signed The Management. As you can imagine, a melee ensured, and Dave bumped into one of them. I’m sitting writing this in the waiting room of the local nick as Kessler tries to get Dave and Darrell Ives (Head of Security) out on bail. One of the band is in jail and we haven’t even done a gig yet!»
September 7th, QUEBEC:
«Went to court with Dave today. All charges were dropped. We were so happy we bought ice lollies on the way out of the courthouse and appeared on the front cover of the local newspaper eating them. You’ve gotta laugh, ain’t ya? Dave did a very good show tonight, considering he had done some bird bang to rights.»
September 8th, MONTREAL:
«Me, Alan and Joel (security) went to a bar to see England play Poland in a World Cup qualifier. England were superb and we easily won 3-0. Looks like we’re on our way to USA 94! We couldn’t drink too much as there’s a show tonight, but we’ll more than make up for it afterwards.»
September 10th, BOSTON:
«Did a show in a strange little town called WORCESTER, then drove back to BOSTON, home town of Tom Wilson, our drum technician. He was our “guide” for the night. Why do people, when on their home turf, keep apologising, and putting their arm around you, and asking if you are having a good time?»
September 13th, WASHINGTON D.C.:
«Saw an amazing sight today. Me, Martin and Darrell Ives were in a cab on our way back to the hotel from the video shop when we were held up at a stop sign for a full five minutes as a convoy of about fifty limos, police cars, armed jeeps and other vehicles, flanked by police motorcycle out-riders, rushed by, sirens blaring. The reason? Yasser Arafat, PLO leader was in town and on his way to The White House for his historic meet’n’greet with Clinton and Rabin. We tried to get a glimpse as his car went past, but saw nothing, except a red and white tea-towel…»
September 17th, PITTSBURGH:
«Don’t like it here. Decided to liven up the club we were in by taking off my clothes and putting on a girl’s dress. Martin, not to be outdone, did the same but missed out the bit about the girl’s dress. Mr. Gahan was on hand with his camera, but the film has mysteriously disappeared. Said a prayer to God tonight: “Please don’t make me come here again.”»
September 26th, NEW YORK CITY:
«Feel a bit rough today. We’ve had a few late nights recently. I was sitting in Alan’s room earlier waiting for him to have his hair cut before we went to the cinema. A Woody Allen film, “Manhattan Murder Mystery”, funnily enough. I was staring out of the window at the “Manhattan skyline”, trying to recount how many songs had that title, when I saw another of those “amazing sights”. A motorcade of black sedans stretching the whole length of Madison Avenue. Alan thought I was exaggerating, until 15 minutes later as we tried to cross the road to enter the cinema as the motorcade drove past at high speed. A full 15 minutes we stood on the kerb-side and missed the start of the film. Who was in town? The President? Almost. Hilary was giving a lecture. (Probably on how to run the country without being president.)»
September 27th, HAMPTON:
«Left New York after 8 days. Everybody seems to love it there. Flew to a place called HAMPTON, Virginia and had to land in a hurricane. This is not something that I recommend. It is not funny. It is not big and it is not clever. Our little 16-seat airplane was tossed round like a crouton in a Caesar salad. We couldn’t land in Virginia or North Carolina because of the hurricane and we didn’t have enough fuel to get to Atlanta. Martin and I initially tried to keep spirits up by singing Buddy Holly and Patsy Cline songs, but then something scary happened – the co-pilot and the stewardess started WHISPERING. What did they know that we didn’t? The thunder and lightning intensified as the engines roared louder and the jokes stopped. Then it got really scary. All of a sudden, as we passed through a cloud, everything went QUIET. The thunder stopped, the engines purred and we just seemed to drift through the air as the clouds turned into a pink mist, and for the first time in my life I really thought I was going to perish. Then BANG! The turbulence re-started, the prayers re-started (Dave clutching a crucifix!) and our pilots somehow managed to get us down in one piece. However, after spending a night in a hotel in HAMPTON, we decided that the plane had crashed, we had all died and were now in hell.»
September 28th, CHAPEL HILL:
«I keep seeing this strange name at the top of the rooming list. Grant Abramson… mmm…Grant… Abramson… No sorry, you’ve got me there.»
September 30th, ATLANTA:
«Had lunch with Grant Abramson today. I was telling him how today was the anniversary of James Dean’s death and would have been Marc Bolan’s birthday had he still been alive. He then launched into this long, complex monologue about my obvious obsession with death, coupled with a fascination with calendar dates, therefore indicating a deep-rooted childhood desire to die on my birthday. I’d still like to know what he’s actually doing on this tour.»
October 6th, NEW ORLEANS:
«Three weeks to go to my thirtieth birthday, I hope Grant Abramson was lying. Discovered a new drink in NEW ORLEANS tonight. It’s called a hurricane: a plastic 1 litre beaker filled with pink rocket fuel. I managed to break “the cat’s meow” house record by drinking seven, but I wasn’t capable of walking the three yards to collect my free T-shirt so I was disqualified. Fletch actually drank 8 hurricanes, but was also disqualified for doing it in less than an hour. “But I like to get home early,” he protested.»
October 14th, DALLAS:
«Depeche Mode do not have a manager, therefore we have a group of people on this tour called “the Committee”, who have meetings to discuss various points of the tour. “The Committee” comprises of Kessler (the manager, if you ask me), JD, Franksy, Tour Manager Ivan Kushlick, Tour accountant Derek Rauchenberger and Myself. A committee meeting occurred today in Dallas, and guess who was there? That man, Grant Abramson! I was going to tell him that this is the city where JFK was shot, but I wasn’t in the mood for his response. (It’s my birthday in THIRTEEN days remember…).»
October 15th, AUSTIN:
«We went to a good club tonight, and I witnessed two things I never thought I’d see. A man picked a fight with Darrell Ives (ouch!), and Fletch had to be carried home. Every day my eyes are opened a little wider.»
October 21st, DETROIT:
«Went to see the Detroit Red Wings beat someone else at ice hockey. A fantastic atmosphere. It’s amazing how the Americans can have a sport where the players beat the shit out of each other, and yet the crowd remain jovial and even bring their kids along. THAT’S how you maintain sell-out crowds. Premiership clubs take note.»
October 23rd, DETROIT:
«A Saturday night in Detroit, just did two great shows here (Friday and Saturday) and it’s our security company’s home town so we’ve been to the best clubs and been very well looked after etc. Then during a room party afterwards, David Gahan, the most accident-prone man in the world, did something that a bizillion people do every day – he opened a bottle of beer. Except Dave somehow managed to cut his finger off as well.»
October 26th, CLEVELAND:
«Good evening Cleveland! Travelled aftershow to Chicago. Travelled to the airport in Alan’s car and he gave me the ultimate gift – a Manchester United away shirt. On the plane at midnight I was given a huge cake, champagne etc. and Dave gave me a gift that matched Alan’s for ultimateness – The Barry Manilow box set collection! I’m in heaven. I got to my room and Ivan had decorated it with streamers and put in ANOTHER cake (and he put me in a huge suite – God bless him). Me, Martin and Denise (Kessler’s assistant) are now on our way out for a quiet drink, as a build up for the big day tomorrow.»
October 28th, CHICAGO:
«I’m gutted. I missed my birthday. Most people get presents. I get punishment. Locked up in my room for 36 hours with only “Mad Marty” as company. As usual, I made the most of it, but by the time I surfaced, it was already the 28th, and I had missed the whole day. Never mind, at least Grant Abramson got it wrong and I didn’t die (apparently I had a good go, if Flood is to be believed). Anyway, I’ve got my surprise party tonight. (Oops!)»

«Poor old Martin L. Gore. I’ve just seen him dragged out of his room dressed in nothing but a pair of silk boxer shorts and a pair of huge handcuffs. Two huge female police officers burst into his room and arrested him for “making too much noise”. The funny thing was, we had turned his stereo off, after a few complaints. The source of offending volume? Martin’s infamous loud voice. “Can I just say one more thing. …”»

«Tonight I met up with Anton Corbijn, a gentleman and a scholar. The four of us had drinks and then went out to dinner.»

«We start a run of five shows at The Forum tonight and everybody is excited. Alan is scratching himself at the moment. He claims he’s got an itchy kravitz.»
November 21st, LOS ANGELES:
«Backstage was chaos last night. Worse than Crystal Palace. Backstage co-ordinator Carol Graham and I were pulling our hair out (as opposed to each other’s, which has happened in the past).»
November 25th, LOS ANGELES:
«We had a superb party at Trader Vic’s last night, courtesy of Bamonte / Kessler Productions. It was a bigger success than our sight-seeing tour of Lisbon (or sound-hearing tour, in Jon Lemon’s case). Experienced a true American Thanksgiving tonight, courtesy of Dave and Theresa. Loads of turkey and beer and people wishing each other well. All it needed was a Bond film and I could have believed it was Christmas.»
November 26th, LOS ANGELES:
«We’ve finished our five-night run at The Forum. I’m exhausted. We should get an early-ish night tonight. Las Vegas tomorrow!»
November 27th, LAS VEGAS:
«Kessler phoned and told me the Vegas show is cancelled. Dave’s voice is shot to bits, and he’s got flu to boot. Bummer. I’ve never been there, and I was supposed to do my gig with THE THE. Life seems like one disappointment after another at the moment. Fletch just rang. He says the plane is still going to Vegas and do I want to jump in with him and Grainne. Oh superb! A night off in Vegas with a pocketful of greenbacks!»
November 28th, LOS ANGELES:
«“Oh what a night!” I forgot to go to bed last night. Las Vegas IS superb. 24 hours of sheer heaven (and I’m 400 bucks up). I’m going to buy a crucifix in Mexico with the money.»
December 3rd, MEXICO CITY:
«We have just done two amazing shows here. “The crowd were amazing, up there with the best. The shows were stunning,” so says JD Fanger. It’s a shame then that Mexico City is about a thousand miles above sea level and has the worst traffic pollution in the world. I was out of breath walking across the room, Dave had to run around on stage for two hours…»

«Four months of sheer madness touring North American and now I’m sitting in a hotel room in Dublin with my girlfriend, Alison, blowing up balloons for our son’s 1st Birthday party. She keeps asking me what planet I’m on, and I keep asking HER what planet I’m on.»

«Played Wembley tonight. A very good show, but you guessed it – backstage was chaos. We had a good party at The Regent afterwards. So what now – a long rest… NOT! I move house tomorrow, then it’s Christmas, then it’s time to start all over again…»
Exotic Tour diary
January 31st, CAPE TOWN:
«Monday morning, but I don’t have that Monday-morning-feeling. The sun is shining and Fletch and I have just flown down to glorious South Africa (or should I say Siff Ifrica). Franksy’s just taken Fletch off in an air-conditioned stretch limo, and left me to do the baggage. Still, it’s nice to have a soft comfortable suitcase to lie on after a GRUELLING TWELVE-HOUR FLIGHT.»
February 1st, CAPE TOWN:
«A day off today, so I’ve got time to think. I went and sat on a rock at the end of The Cape Of Good Hope (appropriate for this tour), and worked out that The Falklands are over there somewhere, Antarctica’s down there and Australia’s that way. If anyone wants the feeling of being at the end of the world, they should come here. (Geographically, not spiritually…)»
February 2nd, PLUMSTEAD:
«Band rehearsals. I cannot believe that somebody would have come all this way last century, and not had the initiative to name their homeland after a nicer part of south-east London. “New Greenwich” perhaps? So what if they were from Plumstead? The Zulus wouldn’t have known any different.»
February 4th, PLUMSTEAD:
«Rehearsals are going very well. “Rush” is a really powerful opener. On the way here yesterday, Alan and I saw something strange. There was this huge great stretch of motorway with no cars on it. The motorway stretches for a few miles then suddenly stops. There’s a 100 yard gap and then the motorway continues again. In the gap is a roundabout with a small pink shack on it, a roadside café. Alan and I were debating the reasons for the non-completion of a multi-million Rand motorway. I said “I bet the little man who owns the café wouldn’t give up his land.” We laughed at this preposterous idea and thought nothing more of it. On the way back to Cape Town, we decided to find out the real reason. We asked our driver what had happened and he replied: “You see that little pink shack over there…”.»
February 6th, JOHANNESBURG:
«Cape Town was beautiful. Constant sunshine, pretty scenery and a high feel-good factor. Rather like Los Angeles without the earthquakes, riots, etc. Johannesburg is none of these things. It’s rather like New York without the excitement and character.»

«The first show of the “Exotic” leg of the tour tonight, and everybody’s a bit nervous. Not just because it’s the first show of a new leg, but it’s our first gig ever on the African continent, and not many have played in South Africa. (They weren’t going to play S-S-S-Sun City, Whoa No…)»

What the stupid twat forgot to learn was that the dismantling of apartheid began in 1991, and if the people of SA are moving toward peace, staying away will not assist their cause. (I’ll come down off my soap-box now)»

«It’s great to be back in Cape Town. Everybody has election fever here. You can feel the anticipation in the air. If the ANC get in (as they will), some of the delightful extreme right-wingers are threatening to re-locate (uninvited) to New Zealand. I bet the Maoris are pleased about that…»
February 18th, CAPE TOWN:
«I’ve just been reading “A South African Political Brief”, given to me by the record company. Under the heading of “Major Social Problems” they list “extremely high levels of crime and violence, illiteracy and a high divorce rate”. Coming from Basildon, I hardly thought them worth mentioning…»
February 20th, CAPE TOWN:
«Oh dear, oh dear. Maybe this tour is jinxed. Alan, myself and Jerry Meltzer (security) went for a nice Italian dinner tonight. We had to leave the restaurant early as Alan was complaining of abdominal pains. Back at the hotel, he went to his room but refused to see a doctor as it was “only overeating”. I went to my room to get him some Alka-Seltzer and on exiting the lift on the way back, I could hear a screaming, coming from Alan’s room 30 yards away, that sounded like a dog being neutered, without anaesthetic. I dragged him out of his room and into a waiting car and by the time we reached the hospital he was foaming at the mouth and screaming phrases that sounded like out-takes from “Bohemian Rhapsody”. The doctors have examined him and confirmed that he has a kidney stone, definitely not caused by “overeating”. Alan insists that he can pass the stone naturally, through his water, (like passing a hedgehog according to Kessler) but unfortunately the doctors have insisted on inserting a laser down the eye of his manhood… (ouch!)»
February 22nd, DURBAN:
«The operation went well yesterday, but as heroic as Alan tried to be, there was no way that he was going to do a show tonight. The first show here is cancelled, not a very common thing for DM. I wish I could have got to Durban earlier. Dave and Martin spent the day swimming with dolphins, which sounds very groovy. Kessler’s gone back to America for a couple of weeks.»
February 25th, JO’BURG (again):
«Dave and I have just worked out that we’ve now been in South Africa for more days than we’ve been in England since May 13th last year. It’s starting to feel like we live here.»
February 27th, TRAVEL:
«We finally bid farewell to South Africa. It was an enjoyable stay, but after four weeks of hard work, we’re looking forward to an interesting visit to the Far East.»
February 28th, SINGAPORE:

«The traffic here is worse than Mexico City and the Blackwall Tunnel put together. On the way to the show, Fletch, Martin and I were told that we had a police motorcycle escort, but I don’t think that anybody actually told him that he was a police motorcycle escort, and he promptly disappeared into the night. I finally had to resort to lying down in front of an Austin Seven, so its driver would stop and let us drive on the pavement. Still, we got to the gig just in time to see Kessler chasing the promoter out of the building, clutching a pair of scissors. The promoter’s crime? He put up posters around the gig advertising “Smoky Joes Crisps”, against our wishes. The scissors? To cut down the posters of course!»

Devotional ist der Konzertfilm zur Devotional-Tour in den Jahren 1993 und 1994. Für den Film wurden Konzerte in Barzelona (Palau Sant Jordi), Liévin (Stade Couvert Régional) and Frankfurt (Festhalle) aufgezeichnet. Regisseur ist Anton Corbijn. Der Konzertfilm war 1995 für den Grammy für das Beste lange Musikvideo (Best Long Form Music Video) nominiert.
Devotional wurde ursprünglich als VHS veröffentlicht und erschien später (2004) in einer erweiterten Fassung auf DVD und als Universal Media Disc (UMD).

Казалось, что наступил идеальный момент для создания семьи: участники Depeche Mode договорились, что весь следующий год после тура будут отдыхать и набираться сил еще интенсивнее, чем в прошлые разы. Продюсер Флад сразу же почувствовал наметившийся разлад, когда Гор пригласил его поработать над следующим альбомом Depeche Mode. Подготовка к записи и предпродакшн стали впустую потраченным временем. Уже больше года они не чувствовали себя группой. И вот февральским вечером 1992 года они вновь встретились в одном из лондонских баров перед вылетом в Испанию.
Все они, конечно, изменились. Но самым большим сюрпризом для Гора, Флетчера и Уайлдера стали разительные метаморфозы, которые произошли с фронтменом группы Дейвом Гэаном. Он отрастил волосы, отощал и обзавелся полудюжиной новых татуировок, которые стали результатом его бесшабашных прогулок по Сансет Стрип в Западном Голливуде. В знак любви к своей новой супруге Терезе он выбил на руке аббревиатуру «TCTTM-FG», что расшифровывалось как: «Teresa Conway to the motherfucker Gahan» (Засранцу Гэану от Терезы Конвей). Уже на первой встрече после долгого расставания Гэан высыпал на головы остальных участников группы ворох жаргонных словечек, которых нахватался, общаясь с молодыми альтернативными рокерами Лос-Анджелеса. Живейший интерес в нем пробудила эзотерическая группа Jane’s Addiction, которая, выставляя напоказ свое увлечение сексуальными излишествами и расширяющими сознание препаратами, вовсе не являлась образцом сдержанности.
Дейв ожидал от нового альбома Depeche Mode пламенного рок-н-ролла, что плохо вязалось с блюзовой направленностью демо-записей Мартина. Как только все они прибыли в Мадрид, Дейв потребовал, чтобы группа испытала новые методы работы и начала писать песни, более ориентированные на отдельные инструменты. Ясно одно: в тот момент его вдохновляло еще кое-что помимо ломко-хрипловатого напева Condemnation. После окончания студийных сессий Гор категорически отверг предположение о том, что все его новые песни написаны будто бы для Дейва и о Дейве: «Неправда. Я никогда не пытался писать с позиции Дейва. Это был замкнутый круг, разорвать который помог бы один единственный откровенный разговор. Но время откровенных разговоров для Depeche Mode безвозвратно ушло. Гор молчал, и это молчание для Алана означало только одно — отсутствие заинтересованности в его участии. И он платил Мартину той же монетой, общаясь с ним односложно и через силу. На самом деле, Гор никогда не сомневался в идеях Уайлдера, намного сильнее сомневаясь в собственных идеях, и сдержанное поведение аранжировщика утверждало его в этих сомнениях. Он чувствовал, что на него давят со всех сторон. Работу над Songs Of Faith And Devotion он воспринимал, как вызов самому себе, не сомневаясь при этом, что «написал хорошие песни». Если я пишу что-то в мажоре, на мой вкус это звучит слишком попсово и совершенно не жизненно. А минор мне кажется вполне реалистичным. О жизни нужно писать в миноре. В своих песнях я хочу говорить о вещах, которые меня волнуют. И если у меня получается перенести то, что меня волнует, в мои песни, я знаю, что и других людей это не оставит равнодушными».
Вернувшись из Испании, Depeche Mode продолжили работу над альбомом Songs Of Faith And Devotion в студии Chateau du Pape в Гамбурге. Что еще раз подтвердило, что совместное проживание в Мадриде было большой ошибкой. Потому что как только окружающий мир перестал напоминать коммуну, группа начала делать успехи. Одновременно всплыла на поверхность проблема Гэана с наркотиками. Впрочем, в студии, где нужно было работать, а не развлекаться, Мартин и Алан держались по традиции отчужденно. И в последний день студийных сессий, по воспоминаниям Флада, они страшно поругались из-за структуры и особенностей аранжировки баллады Judas.
С помощью певиц госпела и музыканта, который играл на волынке, им таки удалось завершить запись Judas в лондонской студии Olympic Studios и поставить, наконец, точку в работе над альбомом Songs Of Faith And Devotion, которая длилась почти год. После изматывающих сессий Гор отправился в бессрочный отпуск вместе со своей семьей. Именно там его настигло срочное сообщение от Дэниела Миллера. Он написал Мартину, что альбом Songs Of Faith And Devotion после выхода в свет 22 марта 1993 года занял первое место в 17 странах. Журнал Melody Maker сделал правильный прогноз, оценивая первый сингл альбома I Feel You: «Эта песня, как тяжелая артиллерия, с которой Depeche Mode идут на приступ чартов. Если сейчас оглянуться назад, то кажется, что декорации Антона Корбайна стали квинтэссенцией всего того, что творилось тогда с Depeche Mode: двухэтажная сцена, дорогостоящие проекции одновременно подчеркивали возросший статус группы и разобщенность между музыкантами, которая только усилилась во время Devotional. Огромное количество концертов – 160 за 14 месяцев – объяснялось тем, что Depeche Mode хотели, прежде всего, окупить громоздкие 90-тонные сценические декорации. Гор и Уайлдер тоже все больше и больше вживались в дух песен их первой роковой пластинки. Все чаще Мартин выходил из-за синтезатора и брался за гитару, а Алан вообще занял место за ударной установкой в духе рок-н-ролльных студийных сессий. На одном из концертов в Лондоне 31 июля 1993 года, апофеозом которого стало исполнение Мартином сокрушительной по своей мощи One Caress в сопровождении струнного квартета, присутствовал репортер журнала Observer. This is Depeche Mode the way they should be seen.
Filmed by Anton Corbijn over several nights of their 1993-94 DEVOTIONAL TOUR (listed by Q Magazine as «the most debauched rock tour ever»), the final product is an almost dreamlike chronicle of Depeche Mode at the absolute peak of their influential creative talents.
Musically, the song selection is on-target, the arrangements are tight & rockin’, and frontman Dave Gahan is at his over-the-top best and surrounded by Anton Corbijn’s opulent stage set and surreal visuals. Accordingly, after this film’s VHS release, it was nominated for «Best Longform Music Video» at the 1994 Grammy Awards.
The extras on the DVD set include two previously unseen excerpts from the performance («Policy Of Truth» and «Halo»), the tracks that were (irritatingly) only released on the European versions of the film («Behind The Wheel,» «Mercy In You,» «Fly On The Windscreen» and «Everything Counts»), the music videos from SONGS OF FAITH AND DEVOTION, the original concert projections used on the tour, and two relevant documentaries.
At any rate, without bias, this video is truly one of the best live performance documentaries that are out there. It captures a band in top form, an audience in almost trance-like devotion, and, thanks to Anton Corbijn, the film is dripping with color and, at times, in hazy focus. much the way you’d remember the show if you had been there. Recommended to all.
what can i say. its a must see. I would say its DM best tour to date. compared to 101 and one night in Paris, Devotional seems to be at a much higher level of professionalism.
Although i feel DM were at the hight of their career throughout the 101 music for the masses tour. Devotional seems more in depth with the music and more in control. The music is precise and clear.
There is extreme talent among the four, with a fresh look and sound with an addition of drums to the stage, which i thought was a great change especially from the world violation tour.
Their talent exceeds that from other bands, as they are still producing music (as a three) today, with the recent touring the angel tour. I hope another DVD is released of a tour from their past as i really enjoy listening as well as watching their music being played!
This whole concert was made with the fan in mind. No other Depeche Mode show matched the production value of the Devotional tour (Except for maybe the Music for the Masses tour when the lead singer was much healthier.
Several books written about Depeche Mode talk about this tour as one of the biggest drug fuelled tours in history (hardened drug users were shocked at what they saw).
That being said, Dave is in his mode. Sure he may not be as alive and upbeat as the previous tours, however, the music on this album was darker which adds to the visuals. This was also one of the first tours to use a live drum kit. The first time us ‘Devotees’ got to hear a harder edge to Dmode.
This is also the last concert run with Alan Wilder before he left the chaos of the band. Many people credit him with helping Depeche reach the highs that they did.
All of the songs on this concert are from the Song of Faith and Devotion album. Don’t go looking for the biggest hits.
If you are looking fo an amazing sonic experience to match beautiful imagery (Anton Corbjin) then sit in with a drink or a smoke and enjoy!
«Depeche Mode Devotional» (1993 release; 94 min plus bonus materials) is a concert film that was taped during the band’s «Songs of Faith And Devotion» tour in 1993. As the movie opens, we get the opening sounds of «Higher Love» while the band remains hidden behind massive curtains, and then about halfway through the song, lead singer David Gahan jumps out in front as the crowd goes crazy. It marks the beginning of a wild and wonderful evening of music.
Couple of comments: this concert documentary is directed by Anthony Corbijn, the band’s long-time visual collaborator and maker of many of the band’s hit single videos. With almost 30 years of hindsight, we now know that this was Depeche Mode at its absolute peak, creatively and musically. The combination of the killer songs from the «Faith and Devotion» album (the band’s only album to hit No.1 on the Billboard 200 album chart) along with choice cuts from their prior output is one thing. But then there is David Gahan’s irresistible performance, truly one for the ages. It was widely rumored that Gahan had a serious heroin addiction problem during this tour, and while I have no idea whether that is true or not, one surely cannot tell from his performance. As it turns out, the «Devotional» tour was the last one for original band member Alan Wilder, who left the band after this tour. Watch him play the drums, none better than on «I Feel You» and «Rush», two of THE highlights of this concert. Martin Gore is in fine form as well, playing the electric guitar on some tunes. Yes, Depeche Mode is an all-out rock band on tracks like «I Feel You» and «Mercy In You». Last, but not least, is of course Andy Fletcher, whose shocking death earlier this week, at the mere age of 60, is why I had to watch this concert documentary again. There are no words. RIP Andy Fletcher.
I had the original VHS tape of this when it was first released in 1993, and then bought the DVD when that was released a decade later. The DVD comes with plenty of bonus materials, all worth checking out but at the end of the day it’s the original concert documentary that makes this such compelling viewing. Depeche Mode was never better, period. I had the good fortune of seeing Depeche Mode in concert several times on the «Devotional» tour, in Houston (while on business trip) and in Cincinnati (where I live). It’s as if it was just yesterday. If you are a fan of the band, be it a die-hard or just a casual (?) fan, «Devotional» is a must-see film.
I am a big Depeche Mode fan with about 120 of their songs spanning several years and albums. When I rented the «Devotional» film it was the second live performance I had ever seen, with the first being the live footage of «Everything Counts».
What I saw when I rented this was almost too much to bear. It wasn’t that there was bad audio and it wasn’t that the songs DM picked stunk. What put a damper on the whole thing was lead singer David Gahan. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such arrogance onstage. I understand that the life of a rock star goes to most of their heads and they become mini-gods, but with Dave it was pathetic. He looked like he was on coke or something, constantly running about and sweating profusely. Then he started flagrantly shaking his rear end in front of the crowd. This got real annoying after about the second time. And every five to ten minutes he would yell «oh yeah» or «uh huh» right in the middle of a great song, totally ruining it. The only good thing I can say is that at least he was REALLY into getting the fans involved and being an entertainer. Too much so to be exact. 2/10
First: I’m a great fan of DM.
And I think that «Songs Of Faith And Devotion» is a truly great recording although the critics (and fans, too) were rather divided in their opinions.
