Best Laid Plans is the ninth episode of the fifth season of the television series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..

Synopsis

Mack, Yo-Yo, and Flint fight to keep everyone alive by starting a revolution against the Kree.

Alphonso Mackenzie and Yo-Yo Rodriguez successfully initiate a rebellion against Kasius and the Kree Watch, killing eight Kree guards after gathering the Lighthouse’s inhabitants like Gunner. Upon learning that the Humans survived the Vrellnexians and are rebelling, Kasius decides to send a messenger: Tess, who was revived through Kree technology. Tess informs Mackenzie, Rodriguez and Flint that Kasius intends to blow up the entire Lighthouse if the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, Flint as well as all the children older than ten are not delivered to him. While Flint and Yo-Yo advocate for a frontal assault, Mackenzie and Tess advise caution.

Mackenzie figures out that Kasius rigged the Lighthouse with bombs scattered all over the place, enabling him to incinerate all the Humans by pushing a single button. Together, the Humans devise a plan to counter Kasius and send Tess back to him, asking for a meeting. Kasius reluctantly agrees and Mackenzie and Rodriguez threaten to destroy all his scientific equipment for breeding Inhumans if he does not hand over the bombs controller. When Rodriguez fails to take it by force, Kasius pushes the button. However, the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents reveal that they were only stalling so that the other Lighthouse inhabitants could take all the bombs to the same place and hide far from the detonation. After Tess escapes from the Kree Watch, Mackenzie blows up Kasius’ equipment and Kasius screams out of rage.

On the surface of the Earth, S.H.I.E.L.D. prepares to face a gravity storm by repairing the Zephyr One to make it fly again, much to Enoch’s surprise who thinks that it will lead to their deaths. Meanwhile, Deke Shaw confronts Samuel Voss about the death of his father and intends to kill him, but Voss advises him against it and tries to convince him to turn on the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. Shaw chooses to spare Voss and leaves, uncertain about what to do.

As the gravity storm approaches, Quake tells Coulson that she should probably remain deprived of her powers for everyone’s safety. Elsewhere on the plane, Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons discover that the Zephyr One has been upgraded with Fitz’s old designs for a new plane, including artificial gravity generators using Gravitonium. To Fitz, Gravitonium could explain what happened to the Earth, but it also means that they are facing a causal paradox and that they will fail to save the Earth, reconnecting with his theory that the future cannot be changed, although Simmons disagrees.

The phrase the best-laid plans is a translation of a Scottish proverb that was first published in 1786. A proverb is a short, pithy, common saying or phrase that particularly gives advice or shares a universal truth. A proverb is an aphorism. Many English proverbs are wise sayings or truths that are taken as quotations from Hebrew biblical scripture, including the Book of Psalms and the Book of Proverbs in the Old Testament, and the Gospel in the New Testament. Other proverbs, or inspirational or wisdom teachings, are taken from the other great religious books, or from a parable told by Aesop, as well as other literature. For instance, the proverb birds of a feather flock together is taken from literature; the phrase early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise is taken from an almanac. We will examine the meaning of the phrase best-laid plans, where it came from and some examples of its use in sentences.

The best-laid plans refers to something that has gone awry, something that has not turned out as well as one had hoped. The expression the best-laid plans carries the connotation that one should not expect for things to always turn out to plan. Like many proverbs, the best-laid plans is usually quoted by itself, though it is not the full proverb. The full proverb is, the best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry. This is a passage from the poem To a Mouse, written by the Scottish poet Robert Burns in 1786. The verse was translated into English, the original Scottish quotation is: The best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men / Gang aft a-gley, / An’ lea’e us nought but grief an’ pain, / For promised joy. Note that best-laid plans is spelled with a hyphen, as best-laid functions as an adjective before a noun. Laid is sometimes misspelled as layed, though layed is not a word. Laid is is the past tense and past participle tense of lay.

The UN rapporteur heard an hour of often moving testimonies from local people describing their stories of being pitched into hardship and despair through what Alston called the “human condition”: best-laid plans derailed by unexpected life-changing events such as serious illness, job loss or marriage breakdown. Major West and Lord Marshall Burr stand before Lord Governor Meed, the ranking nobleman in Angland. Burr dresses down the Governor for committing his men to the field against the orders of the King. Meed’s response is self-absorbed, only able to lament the loss of his sons. Burr ends the conversation by taking command in Angland, and setting the Governor to provide for refugees.

At a meeting of the command staff, Major West briefs them on Angland’s geography. The Generals and their flunkies seem far more concerned with petty rivalries than with the war to come. Burr follows West’s briefing with a detailed strategy that will split the army into three commands, two to flush Bethod into a decisive battle where the Union’s five-to-one advantage can win the day, and one to guard their retreat led by Prince Ladisla. 1 Burr, fearing Ladisla’s incompetence, assigns West to the Crown Prince’s staff. To soften the blow, he promotes West to Colonel. 2

With the meeting concluded, Burr takes West with him to inspect the regiment. Indulging in memories of his youth, the Lord Marshall puts the spurs to his horse and takes off through the fields, with West in pursuit. Suddenly, a rope pulled taut across the road rips both men from their horses and into the muck. The ambushers are Rudd Threetrees and his crew. To their surprise and relief, they offer an alliance. Grateful to be alive, the Lord Marshall Burr agrees and assigns the crew of Northmen to Colonel West. 3

At the church, Playa and Johnny Gat prepare for an assault on the Abandoned Police Station which is being used as a hideout for Tanya Winters. Gat selects a VICE 9, Tombstone and a switchblade to take and he and Playa make their way to meet the 3rd Street Saints outside the old station. [1]

The Vice Kings try to defend the station but are quickly overwhelmed by the Saints, and Tanya is forced to withdraw further and further into the building. Johnny and Playa seemingly corner and confront Tanya, only to be ambushed by Anthony Green, who strikes Playa in the back of the head and shoots Gat in the leg with a shotgun. Gat retaliates by stabbing Green in the leg with a switchblade, giving Playa time to escape by diving out of a nearby window. Green calls Benjamin King to say they’ve caught Johnny Gat. Warren Williams wants to gather a crew and attack Saint’s Row but is sternly talked down by King, who states that his time will come eventually, but right now the Vice Kings have the 3rd Street Saints exactly where they want them. Upon completion of the Mission, this description is available on the ‘Story’ page, accessed from the ‘INFO’ tab of the pause menu.

Gameplay [ ]

The route to the Abandoned Police Station is automatically marked on the GPS. Johnny’s Venom is parked outside the church, although any vehicle can be used.

After arriving at the police station with Johnny Gat, there are several Saints outside with Hammerheads, facing off against 4 Vice Kings on the steps of the building.

When the Vice Kings see Playa, 1 level of Vice Kings Notoriety is added, but this can be avoid by staying in the car and not approaching.

Police Notoriety can be gained, but cannot go above 2.

Catch Tanya and kill her. What are you standing around for? Kill ’em! — Tanya Winters, when Playa enters the building

When the door to the police station is opened, Tanya tells her men to kill the Saints and flees further into the building. If Notoriety has not already been acquired, it is raised to level 1.

The real objective is simply «follow Tanya». Tanya herself cannot be damaged, so it’s futile to shoot her.

Inside is a series of rooms containing at least 2 Vice Kings in each room, mostly armed with VICE 9s. There are 12 Vice Kings on the ground floor. Tanya is waiting inside the stairwell, and flees upwards, but there are also stair down to the holding cells in the basement, where there is a Tombstone in the office. There are 3 Vice Kings downstairs, 7 upstairs, and one who appears from behind.

If more than one follower has been unlocked, the 3rd Street Saints outside the station make for excellent Homies along with Gat. None of the Vice Kings are required kills, so it’s possible to sprint through the building following Tanya; the cutscene immediately plays after reaching the room on the second floor of the building, even if Tanya hasn’t reached it yet.

The gameplay portion after the cutscene is named «Pulling Out», but this name is not displayed in game.

Vice Kings Notoriety is locked at 2.5 and Stilwater Police Department Notoriety is raised to 3.5, but is not locked and can drop normally. Police Notoriety can now go up to 5.

Any other Homies that were recruited before the cutscene are still present.

There is a incoming phone call from Julius Little, and the objective does not change until it is answered.

Get back to the Church . Hey playa. One of Johnny’s crew got out of there in time and told me what went down. If the cops are workin’ for the Kings, you gotta get off the streets fast. Hurry up and get back to the church. We’ll figure out a way to get Johnny back home. — Julius Little

A beater Slingshot is parked at the side of the building next to Playa, and the Hammerheads are still out the front, along with whichever vehicle was driven to the police station.

A petty criminal, Danny (Stephen Graham), cares for a giant of a man with learning difficulties, Joseph (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje). When Danny gets in trouble with a local crime boss he persuades Joseph to take part in a series of illegal cage fights in order to pay off his debt. OK, so far it sounds like a gangster/fighting flick, I grant you, but what has been left out of the trailer is the sub plot about Joseph falling in love with a young woman, also with learning difficulties, played by Maxine Peake.

I say ‘learning difficulties’ as I have no idea what the acceptable terminology is these days. Special needs? Luckily the film is down-to-earth and honest and doesn’t pussyfoot around like I am. The characters speak as they would in real life, which does result in one very funny line which everyone in the audience laughed at but wouldn’t dare repeat outside of the cinema*.

The subplot is handled with skill and care. The actors all turn in fine performances, especially Stephen Graham as the quick-witted but ultimately self-destructive central character and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as the simple giant, Joseph. Their relationship, as you discover more and more about it, it utterly believable and is the central spine of the whole film. It’s not a life changer but it is fine piece of work and well worth checking out if you get the chance.

Not sure what film Dodgy-Milk was watching, but it wasn’t the same film as me. Maybe something like «War Horse» would be more to their taste.

This is a gritty character study about hopes & dreams, manipulation, deceipt, selfishness, betrayal but ultimately love, albeit it a little unorthodox. It is «loosely» (and I mean very loosely) based on Stienbeck’s «Of Mice and Men» and if you’re familiar with the book you’ll get it but it’s used more as an idea for the film, rather than a screenplay.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, I thought the main performances from Steven Graham, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Maxine Peake were excellent with strong support performances from the other members of the cast particularly David O’Hara who is in menacing form. Throughout the film, it’s funny, uncomfortable, tender and shocking in equal measure.

It is a very «British» film and if you’re expecting a «Hollywood» blockbuster because you’ve seen Graham as Al Capone in the brilliant Boardwalk Empire, this might not be the film for you.

It’s a good 8/10 from me and I would definitely recommend to anyone who likes «proper» films.

«Best Laid Plans» is a gripping film loosely based on the Steinbeck novel «Of Mice and Men». Don’t worry, the story differs considerably enough that nothing is spoiled if you’re up on your Steinbeck. The story is woven around an odd pair: the mentally challenged gentle giant «Joseph» (phenomenally played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, whom you may remember as the very different Mr. Eko in «Lost») and his guardian, the small-time crook «Danny» (Stephen Graham).

The two seem to have a modestly idyllic life, pulling off small capers to make a living and fishing at the local canal. But due to Danny’s involvement with the wrong crowd, he gets into a jam where the only way out is for him to submit his buddy Joseph to a very brutal criminal occupation.

The character development and evolution of each man is what makes this interesting to watch. Danny is plagued by guilt for what he is doing to his friend and slowly descending into drug abuse (coke, not meth like in my title—but hey, clever wordplays don’t come easy). Kind-hearted Joseph is profoundly altered by the violence he is subjected to. At the same time, each man finds his own love interest, each woman mirroring the harshness and innocence of the 2 men.

«Best Laid Plans» runs the full spectrum of bleakness, brightness, darkness and charm. It begins with a mildly comedic scene but quickly turns heavy when we realize what is at stake. From then on, the film gets heavier and darker, but it remains peppered with some charming & heartwarming scenes involving Joseph. The extreme contrast makes the film unpredictable, suspenseful and sometimes beautifully disturbing. It’s the director’s ability to mix the two extremes—beauty & brutality—that makes this a poetic experience. If you like character-driven stories set in a tense, gritty environment, then check this one out.

By the way, if you happen to be a pitbull lover (the dog, not the rapper), definitely check this out because it makes a great metaphor for those gentle, lovable mutts who, simply due to their physique and eagerness to please, are subjected to human brutality just like Joseph. I’m sure the metaphor can apply to many things as well. This film will keep you thinking for a long time.

This is film making, not movie making and if you don’t understand the difference you might struggle to understand the film.

There are no bombs, flames or explosions but there is plenty of grit, pathos and some tidy cinematography.

The opening shot of Stephen Graham is worth the price of admission alone and from that shot you know what you’re supposed to be going to get.

Sadly and all too often, such promise quickly fades but not here. The cast keep it tight enough to hold your interest and loose enough for the dialogue to be relaxed and natural, right through to the inevitable end.

This is in no short measure down to the talented cast, held together by Stephen Graham, another British actor from over here, who’s doing rather well over there.

MORE like this, please, film makers.

Loosely based on ‘Of Mice And Men’, the film brings us into Notingham and into lives of two men, one with a mental age of seven.

Graham gets into trouble with the local gangster, and owes him £10,000, but has no means of paying. The gangster decides that Agbaje should be introduced into the world of underground fighting, in order to pay off Grahams debt.

It’s a marvellous little film, which is harrowing and heart warming at the same time, thanks to the two central performances. They really have great chemistry, and make the film as good as it should be.

The film does suffer from the old cliché of the gangster, and O’Hara, despite being very god, is your by the numbers gangster, down to the fancy apartment and the endless supply of henchmen.

It’s a shame that this film will attract the wrong audience, thanks to the awful cover that will attract the Danny Dyer fan, and thus end up with negative feedback.

Ignore the cover, it’s a wonderful movie, with a sense of unease from the moment Agbaje steals a washing machine, but also very funny in places too.

Danny (Stephen Graham) is a scally low life in debt to big time gangster Curtis (David O’ Hara) who is threatening to hurt his mentally impaired friend Joseph (Adowayle Agogoboyo Agabala) if he doesn’t repay the debt soon. Danny sees no other way out, but to get Josepth to fight in illegal underground cage matches, which he does. But as he delivers more and more, the stakes get raised higher and higher, until Danny is forced to try and find a way out.

Best Laid Plans is a curious effort, that starts by setting itself up one way and from the way it opens, seems to employ a different style to what you were expecting. But, while it ultimately manages to be an effective drama thriller, it remains a film that is unsure of it’s tone and style and where it wants to go with itself.

One theme it does settle on and seems to want to stick with through out, is the theme of disability and people with mental impairment problems, which leads to some uneasy and challenging viewing through out, as Joseph develops a romance with a fellow impaired person called Isabel (Maxine Peake), coming up against various trials and tribulations because of it. It’s a surprising and daring theme to want to stick in a tale like this, and it doesn’t help how morally reprehensible the lead character emerges, using his so called friend to fight in cage matches so he can pay off his grubby little debt to some gangster, while developing a relationship with call girl Lisa (Emma Stansfield) that takes an unconvincing turn at the end.

The film aims to be a simple ‘down on his luck ne’er do well trying to get out of bother’ tale, that ends up being a dark look in to how callous and predatory human instincts can be. For all this, it remains a fairly well written, ambitious film with some reliably steely lead performances from the two lead stars. It’s dogged determination to make the viewer feel a bit uncomfortable really is a blessing and a curse for it, though. ***

It kept me at least 99% through the whole movie.

I was very impressed with this film. The actor playing Joseph was nothing short of brilliant and tender. I found myself wishing that no matter how it ended, Joseph would be taken care of.

I must give props to the director for putting it all together in such a soft and yet gripping way. Someone had a vision with this piece and I hope they got what they were after.

I hope the actor playing Joseph gets the respect he deserves and I feel honored to have stumbled upon this gem.

I would highly recommend this movie to anyone old enough to take the emotional pounding.

First of all, let me say that there is a certain statement of fact to be made about ‘Best Laid Plans’ and it is this.

If you have any appreciation or respect at all for the medium of British Independent film, then the sleeve credits alone will ensure that you simply cannot pass this one by. I say «will ensure» because «should ensure» in this context would quite simply be a redundant phrase.

Credits do not of course guarantee that any film will live up to its promise, but realistically speaking, anybody who loves and understands this genre and appreciates the luminaries within it would be a fool to bet against the credibility of the acting and directional talent gathered here.

Which is why it is interesting and refreshing to hear the views of a couple of American critics on this platform, and equally why one British critic, puzzling though his observations are, is probably better ignored.

Not that I wish to dwell too much on the critique of other critiques, it’s just that this film delivers so much bang for what was probably its buck, and does it on so many levels that it is difficult to imagine where such scathing detraction could possibly come from. The leveller here is a simple one, if you don’t like this movie. then you just don’t get it.

First and foremost, what we have here is a damned good story. Start with a big black guy carrying a washing machine and wonder where on earth this could possibly be going. What you get is an intriguing premise, with even more intriguing sub-plots woven into it, no spoilers coming here by the way. see the movie.

An often unavoidable truth with independent cinema is that in return for that elusive damned good story, it is never by any means certain (given the absence of Hollywood’s millions) that you are going to get any icing on your cake.

Yet in this regard «Best Laid Plans» exacts itself as a true David to Hollywood’s flabby Goliath. Take some Ken Loach style social realism, throw in some Nick Love style menace, some convincingly stylised violence, and not one but two touching love stories. Then start dealing with some deep themes,like isolation, greed, relationships, and while you’re at it why not be audacious enough to examine the concept of love, with stark honesty and through a slightly skewed lens?

Why not indeed? This is a brave piece of storytelling and you really don’t get away with this kind of stuff without a pretty slick script and a bunch of stellar performances from a gifted cast. Chris Green is definitely one to watch in terms of the former.

I would equally have to concede some understatement in comparing David Blair with any other director. Since he has clearly taken both script and cast and made the whole thing fly.

So there must be a downside. perhaps the shooting?

Nope, it’s all dark and brooding when it needs to be and bright and evocative when it doesn’t.

Hell of a lot of icing there. but not much in the way of cake.

And then see this gem and be thankful. because Hollywood would simply have ruined it.

I believe “love” is a spark, your “spirit” connects with another. YOU do not lay plans to fall in love “song Your Beautiful”, but I promise if you ever experience “Your Beautiful” YOU will realize he is not that. “Your greatest blessing was the dinner” and the following.

GET IN THE WAY: I think YOU will not get “hurt” if YOU face “truth”, and learn to let go of “lies” YOU put up with for ten years. The “truth” many are “looking for love ‘in’ the wrong places” because they do not know themselves, so they do not know what to look for to get the spark.

It shocked me how little I knew of myself until I looked at myself. That did not happen until I did volunteer work in a juvenile jail ministry [knee-to-knee with drug bosses, murderers, rapists and runaways]. After eight year, I had developed a series of hard “questions” to ask them, one of which almost got me punched out. The consequence, every question I asked them was turned on me at 2 AM.

Pray YOU see that spark in your daughter’s eyes, then you will know what to look for when you see IT in a partner. I see IT almost every day, even in your comments.

I turned a woman singing it instead of a man.

She is saying he is hiding from himself. He doesn’t know that he deserves someone that truly loves him because he has been hurt so many times he has built a solid wall around himself. He’s very guarded. She is determined to tell him that she will be there for him through anything. He can’t bear to believe it because it’s never happened to him before. Everything has always fallen apart for him. He won’t or can’t realize that she is the one for him or there may be someone else that will crack his shell and break down the wall that surrounds him. She has always had good intentions. She really tries to make him see that he shouldn’t grow older and be alone. She knows she can be the one but he won’t allow it and she understands at this point that he will never share himself completely with her or someone else. Her voice is pleading for him to listen but he can’t. It’s not because he can’t hear her, it’s because he is not secure with himself and believes that he does not deserve her.

I once dated a girl who had borderline personality disorder. The way that he describes the situation is exactly the way mine was.

I sense so much pain in his voice. He can’t make her see, make her realize that he is willing to give her everything and willing to do anything to make her happy, but she just won’t let him.

Much like my situation.

I Interpret this as someone who doesn’t like where they are, Who they are, but they won’t let anyone get close, won’t let anyone help them.

This is a person who can’t allow to be helped, because they’re scared. What they know is much safer than what they don’t. So they hold on to what they know and let go of anything that might resemble change or is different and unknown.

This part brought me to tears. He is essentially giving up on the idea that he’s the one who can break her walls. The one who can help her break her fears, the one she will trust and open up to. He’s, at this point, just trying to make her understand that she needs to give someone, anyone, a chance to show her love, trust, even if it isn’t him because he loves her that much.

The rest goes to describe what essentially happened to me, step by step.

Nothing I did was ever good enough. Whatever I did to show her I loved her never convinced her that I did. Anything that I did, as loving and caring and as much devotion as it showed, was always taken for something else. It was never what I meant. It was never what I hoped it would be in her eyes.

I love you. I hope you find a way to love and let someone love you. I wish it was me. But I love you none the less and wish you love and happiness even if it isn’t with me.

I wish you could see I would have done anything for you and given you everything I offered. I miss you with all my heart. I hope you’ll find happiness where you are.
